Search

Maintaining the coherence in quantum systems is interesting in both fundamental physics and quantum information processing. In particular, suppressing the dephasing caused by thermal fluctuations in quantum systems can potentially enable functional quantum devices. Techniques to reduce motional dephasing of quantum superpositions include spin echo and bang-bang. In this paper, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel protocol on a collective quantum superposition state known as a Rydberg polariton. These collective states are potentially important in the context of single photon sources, optical transistor, all-optical quantum gates and fast read-out of quantum information. However progress in Rydberg polariton quantum technology has been hindered by fast motional dephasing on which no effective methods exist for undoing it. Atoms excited to electronically high-lying Rydberg states decay to low-energy states through spontaneous emission processes. We investigate the impact of a static electric field on the superradiant emission process between Rydberg $|60D_{5/2}\rangle$ and $|61P_{3/2}\rangle$ states in an ultracold Cesium Rydberg atom ensemble. We report experimental observations of a significant slowdown in superradiance upon applying an electric field. To understand the slowing down dynamics, we employ a discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) method to solve the corresponding master equation numerically. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that superradiance decoherence is caused by the Stark shifts of the Rydberg level. Our theoretical simulations qualitatively match the experimental observations. Our work provides new insights into controlling quantum critical behaviors, with implications for quantum many-body dynamics, and the study of quantum phase transitions.

Physical systems that display competitive non-linear dynamics have played a key role in the development of mathematical models of Nature. Important examples include predator-prey models in ecology, biology, consumer-resource models in economics, and reaction-diffusion equations in chemical reactions. However, as real world systems are embedded in complex environments, where it is difficult or even impossible to control external parameters, quantitative comparison between measurements and simple models remains challenging. This motivates the search for competitive dynamics in isolated physical systems, with precise control. An ideal candidate is laser excitation in dilute atomic ensembles. For example, atoms in highly-excited Rydberg states display rich many-body dynamics including ergodicity breaking, synchronisation and time crystals. Here, we demonstrate predator-prey dynamics by laser excitation and ionisation of Rydberg atoms in a room temperature vapour cell. Ionisation of excited atoms produce electric fields that suppress further excitation. This starves the ionisation process of resource, giving rise to predator-prey dynamics. By comparing our results to the Lotka-Volterra model, we demonstrate that as well applications in non-linear dynamics, our experiment has applications in metrology, and remote sensing of localised plasmas., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Recent years have witnessed the use of pervasive wireless signals (e.g., Wi-Fi, RFID, and mmWave) for sensing purposes. Due to its non-intrusive characteristic, wireless sensing plays an important role in various intelligent sensing applications. However, limited by the inherent thermal noise of RF transceivers, the sensing granularity of existing wireless sensing systems are still coarse, limiting their adoption for fine-grained sensing applications. In this paper, we introduce the quantum receiver, which does not contain traditional electronic components such as mixers, amplifiers, and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to wireless sensing systems, significantly reducing the source of thermal noise. By taking non-intrusive liquid recognition as an application example, we show the superior performance of quantum wireless sensing. By leveraging the unique property of quantum receiver, we propose a novel double-ratio method to address several well-known challenges in liquid recognition, eliminating the effect of liquid volume, device-target distance and container. We implement the quantum sensing prototype and evaluate the liquid recognition performance comprehensively. The results show that our system is able to recognize 17 commonly seen liquids, including very similar ones~(e.g., Pepsi and Coke) at an accuracy higher than 99.9\%. For milk expiration monitoring, our system is able to achieve an accuracy of 99.0\% for pH value measurements at a granularity of 0.1, which is much finer than that required for expiration monitoring., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate the continuous broadband microwave receivers based on AC Stark shifts and Floquet States of Rydberg levels in a cesium atomic vapor cell. The resonant transition frequency of two adjacent Rydberg states 78$S_{1/2}$ and 78$P_{1/2}$ is tuned based on AC Stark effect of 70~MHz Radio frequency (RF) field that is applied outside the vapor cell. Meanwhile, the Rydberg states also exhibit Floquet even-order sidebands that are used to extend the bandwidths further. We achieve microwave electric field measurements over 1.172~GHz of continuous frequency range. The sensitivity of the Rydberg receiver with heterodyne technique in the absence of RF field is 280.2~nVcm$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1/2}$, while it is dramatically decreased with tuning the resonant transition frequency in the presence of RF field. Surprisingly, the sensitivity can be greatly improved if the microwave field couples the Floquet sideband transition. The achieving of continuous frequency and high sensitivity microwave detection will promote the application of Rydberg receiver in the radar technique and wireless communication., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Time crystals, as temporal analogs of space crystals, manifest as stable and periodic behavior that breaks time translation symmetry. In an open quantum system, many-body interaction subjected to dissipation allows one to develop the time crystalline order in an unprecedented way, as refer to dissipative time crystal. Here we report the observation of a time crystal comb in the continuously driven-dissipative and strongly interacting Rydberg thermal gas, in which continuous time crystal and sub-harmonics of limit cycles as well as the high-order harmonic oscillation phases are observed in the same system by manipulating the Rydberg excitation. Our work provides new ways to explore the nonequilibrium phases of matter in open systems. Such time crystals with persistent oscillation rooted in emergent quantum correlations, may emerge as a ubiquitous tool in quantum metrology, for instance, continuous sensing and parameter estimation surpassing the standard quantum limit., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Microwave electric field sensing is of importance for a wide range of applications in areas of remote sensing, radar astronomy and communications. Over the past decade, Rydberg atoms, owing to their exaggerated response to microwave electric fields, plentiful optional energy levels and integratable preparation methods, have been used in ultra-sensitive, wide broadband, traceable, stealthy microwave electric field sensing. This review first introduces the basic concept of quantum sensing, properties of Rydberg atoms and principles of quantum sensing of microwave electric fields with Rydberg atoms. Then an overview of this very active research direction is gradually expanded, covering progresses of sensitivity and bandwidth in Rydberg atoms based icrowavesensing,uperheterodyne quantum sensing with microwave-dressed Rydberg atoms, quantum-enhanced sensing of microwave electric field, recent advanced quantum measurement systems and approaches to further improve the performance of microwave electric field sensing. Finally, a brief outlook on future development directions is discussed.

We investigate the response bandwidth of a superheterodyne Rydberg receiver at a room-temperature vapor cell, and present an architecture of multi-channel lasers excitation to increase the response bandwidth and keep sensitivity, simultaneously. Two microwave fields, denoted as a local oscillator (LO) $E_{LO}$ and a signal field $E_{Sig}$, couple two Rydberg states transition of $|52D_{5/2}\rangle\to |53P_{3/2}\rangle$. In the presence of the LO field, the frequency difference between two fields can be read out as an intermediate frequency (IF) signal using Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectroscopy. The bandwidth of the Rydberg receiver is obtained by measuring the output power of IF signal versus the frequency difference between two fields. The bandwidth dependence on the Rabi frequency of excitation lasers is presented, which shows the bandwidth decrease with the probe Rabi frequency, while it is quadratic dependence on the coupling Rabi frequency. Meanwhile, we investigate the effect of probe laser waist on the bandwidth, showing that the bandwidth is inversely proportional to the laser waist. We achieve a maximum response bandwidth of the receiver about 6.8~MHz. Finally, we design an architecture of multi-channel lasers excitation for increasing the response and keeping the sensitivity, simultaneously. Our work has the potential to extend the applications of Rydberg atoms in communications.

Long-range $(n+2)D_{5/2} \, nF_J$ Rydberg macro-dimers are observed in an ultracold cesium Rydberg gas for $39\leq n\leq48$. Strong dipolar "flip" ($\langle D_{5/2} F_{5/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{5/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$, $\langle D_{5/2} F_{7/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{7/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$) and "cross" ($\langle D_{5/2} F_{7/2} \vert \hat{V}_{dd} \vert F_{5/2} D_{5/2} \rangle$) couplings lead to bound, fine-structure-mixed $(n+2)D_{5/2}nF_J$ macro-dimers at energies between the $F_J$ fine-structure levels. The $DF$ macro-dimers are measured by microwave photo-association from optically prepared $[(n+2)D_{5/2}]_2$ Rydberg pair states. Calculated adiabatic potential curves are used to elucidate the underlying physics and to model the $DF$ macro-dimer spectra, with good overall agreement. Microwave photo-association allows Franck-Condon tuning, which we have studied by varying the detuning of a Rydberg-atom excitation laser. Further, in Stark spectroscopy we have measured molecular DC electric polarizabilities that are considerably larger than those of the atomic states. The large molecular polarizabilities may be caused by high-$\ell$ mixing. The observed linewidths of the Stark-shifted molecular lines provide initial evidence for intra-molecular induced-dipole-dipole interaction.

We report on high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of cesium Rydberg $(n+2)D_{5/2}\rightarrow nF_{J}$ transitions in a cold atomic gas. Atoms laser-cooled and trapped in a magnetic-optical trap are prepared in the $D$ Rydberg state using a two-photon laser excitation scheme. A microwave field transmitted into the chamber with a microwave horn drives the Rydberg transitions, which are probed via state selective field ionization. Varying duration and power of the microwave pulse, we observe Fourier side-band spectra as well as damped, on-resonant Rabi oscillations with pulse areas up to $\gtrsim 3 \pi$. Furthermore, we investigate the Zeeman effect of the clearly resolved $nF_J$ fine-structure levels in fields up to 120~mG, where the transition into $nF_{7/2}$ displays a thee-peak Zeeman pattern, while $nF_{5/2}$ shows a two-peak pattern. Our theoretical models explain all observed spectral characteristics, showing good agreement with the experiment. Our measurements provide a pathway for the study of high-angular-momentum Rydberg states, initialization and coherent manipulation of such states, Rydberg-atom macrodimers, and other Rydberg-atom interactions. Furthermore, the presented methods are suitable for calibration of microwave radiation as well as for nulling and calibration of DC magnetic fields in experimental chambers for cold atoms.

We present precise measurements of the quantum defects of cesium $n$F$_J$ Rydberg levels. We employ high-precision microwave spectroscopy of $(n+2)\mathrm{D}_{5/2}\rightarrow n\mathrm{F}_{5/2,7/2}$ transitions for $n=45$ to 50 in a cold-atom setup. Cold cesium $(n+2)$D$_{5/2}$ atoms, prepared via two-photon laser excitation, are probed by scanning weak microwave fields interacting with the atoms across the $n\mathrm{F}_{5/2,7/2}$ resonances. Transition spectra are acquired using state-selective electric-field ionization and time-gated ion detection. Transition-frequency intervals are obtained by Lorentzian fits to the measured spectral lines, which have linewidths ranging between 70~kHz and 190~kHz, corresponding to about one to three times the Fourier limit. A comprehensive analysis of relevant line-shift uncertainties and line-broadening effects is conducted. We find quantum defect parameters $\delta_{0}(\mathrm{F}_{5/2})=0.03341537(70)$ and $\delta_{2}(\mathrm{F}_{5/2})=-0.2014(16)$, as well as $\delta_{0}(\mathrm{F}_{7/2})=0.0335646(13)$ and $\delta_{2}(\mathrm{F}_{7/2})=-0.2052(29)$, for $J=5/2$ and $J=7/2$, respectively. Fine structure parameters $A_{FS}$ and $B_{FS}$ for Cs $n{\rm{F}}_J$ are also obtained. Results are discussed in context with previous works, and the significance of the results is discussed.

We study Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a cascade three-level atom involving 80$D_{5/2}$ state in a strong interaction regime employing a cesium ultracold cloud. In our experiment, a strong coupling laser couples 6$P_{3/2}$ to 80$D_{5/2}$ transition, while a weak probe, driving 6$S_{1/2}$ to 6$P_{3/2}$ transition, probes the coupling induced EIT signal. At the two-photon resonance, we observe that the EIT transmission decreases slowly with time, which is a signature of interaction induced metastability. The dephasing rate $\gamma_{\rm OD}$ is extracted with optical depth OD = $\gamma_{\rm OD}t$. We find that the optical depth linearly increases with time at onset for a fixed probe incident photon number $R_{\rm in}$ before saturation. The dephasing rate shows a nonlinear dependence on $R_{\rm in}$. The dephasing mechanism is mainly attributed to the strong dipole-dipole interactions, which leads to state transfer from $nD_{5/2}$ to other Rydberg states. We demonstrate that the typical transfer time $\tau_{0(80D)}$ obtained by the state selective field ionization technique is comparable with the decay time of EIT transmission $\tau_{0({\rm EIT})}$. We study steady state phases of a one-dimensional array of Rydberg atoms coupled by a microwave (MW) field where the higher energy Rydberg state decays to the lower energy one via single-body and collective (superradiant) decay. Using mean-field approaches, we examine the interplay among the MW coupling, intra-state van der Waals (vdW) interaction, and single-body and collective dissipation between Rydberg states. A linear stability analysis reveals that a series of phases, including uniform, antiferromagnetic, oscillatory, and bistable and multistable phases can be obtained. Without the vdW interaction, only uniform phases are found. In the presence of the vdW interaction, multistable solutions are enhanced when increasing the strength of the superradiant decay rate. Our numerical simulations show that the bistable and multistable phases are stabilized by superradiance in a long chain. The critical point between the uniform and multistable phases and its scaling with the atom number is obtained. Through numerically solving the master equation of a finite chain, we show that the mean-field multistable phase could be characterized by expectation values of Rydberg populations and two-body correlations between Rydberg atoms in different sites.

We demonstrate a continuous frequency electric field measurement based on the far off-resonant AC stark effect in a Rydberg atomic vapor cell. In this configuration, a strong far off-resonant field, denoted as a local oscillator (LO) field, acts as a gain shifting the Rydberg level to a high sensitivity region. An incident weak signal field with a few hundreds of kHz difference from the LO field is mixed with the LO field in Rydberg system to generate an intermediate frequency (IF) signal, which is read out by the Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (Rydberg-EIT) spectroscopy. Not like resonant EIT-AT spectra, we realize the electric field measurement of the signal frequency from 2 GHz to 5 GHz using a single Rydberg state. A minimum detectable filed strength is down to 2.31~$\mu$V/cm and a linear dynamic range is over 65~dB. The minimum detectable filed is comparable with a resonant microwave-dressed Rydberg heterodyne receiver using the same system, which is 1.45~$\mu$V/cm. We also show the system has an inherent polarization selectivity feature. Realization and manipulation of parity-time (PT) symmetry in multidimensional systems are highly desirable for exploring nontrivial physics and uncovering exotic phenomena in non-Hermitian systems. Here, we report the first experimental observation of partial PT (pPT) symmetry in a cesium atomic gas coupled with laser fields, where a two-dimensional pPT-symmetric optical potential for probe laser beam is created. A transition of the pPT symmetry from an unbroken phase to a broken one is observed through changing the beam-waist ratio of the control and probe laser beams, and the domains of unbroken, broken, and non-pPT phases are also discriminated unambiguously. Moreover, we develop a technique to precisely determine the location of the exceptional point of the pPT symmetry breaking by measuring the asymmetry degree of the probe-beam intensity distribution. The findings reported here pave the way for controlling multidimensional laser beams in non-Hermitian systems via laser-induced atomic coherence, and have potential applications for designing new types of light amplifiers and attenuators, Comment: 6 pages (including references), 4 figures

We demonstrate a collectively-encoded qubit based on a single Rydberg excitation stored in an ensemble of $N$ entangled atoms. Qubit rotations are performed by applying microwave fields that drive excitations between Rydberg states. Coherent read-out is performed by mapping the excitation into a single photon. Ramsey interferometry is used to probe the coherence of the qubit, and to test the robustness to external perturbations. We show that qubit coherence is preserved even as we lose atoms from the polariton mode, preserving Ramsey fringe visibility. We show that dephasing due to electric field noise scales as the fourth power of field amplitude. These results show that robust quantum information processing can be achieved via collective encoding using Rydberg polaritons, and hence this system could provide an attractive alternative coding strategy for quantum computation and networking., Comment: Main Paper: 6 pages, 4 figures Supplementary Material: 8 pages, 3 figures

An ensemble of excited atoms can synchronize emission of light collectively in a process known as superradiance when its characteristic size is smaller than the wavelength of emitted photons. The underlying superradiance depends strongly on electromagnetic (photon) fields surrounding the atomic ensemble. High mode densities of microwave photons from $300\,$K blackbody radiation (BBR) significantly enhance decay rates of Rydberg states to neighbouring states, enabling superradiance that is not possible with bare vacuum induced spontaneous decay. Here we report observations of the superradiance of ultracold Rydberg atoms embedded in a bath of room-temperature photons. The temporal evolution of the Rydberg $|nD\rangle$ to $|(n+1)P\rangle$ superradiant decay of Cs atoms ($n$ the principal quantum number) is measured directly in free space. Theoretical simulations confirm the BBR enhanced superradiance in large Rydberg ensembles. We demonstrate that the van der Waals interactions between Rydberg atoms change the superradiant dynamics and modify the scaling of the superradiance. In the presence of static electric fields, we find that the superradiance becomes slow, potentially due to many-body interaction induced dephasing. Our study provides insights into many-body dynamics of interacting atoms coupled to thermal BBR, and might open a route to the design of blackbody thermometry at microwave frequencies via collective, dissipative photon-atom interactions.

We demonstrate a single-photon stored-light interferometer, where a photon is stored in a laser-cooled atomic ensemble in the form of a Rydberg polariton with a spatial extent of $10 \times1\times1\mu m^3$. The photon is subject to a Ramsey sequence, i.e. `split' into a superposition of two paths. After a delay of up to 450 ns, the two paths are recombined to give an output dependent on their relative phase. The superposition time of 450 ns is equivalent to a free-space propagation distance of 135 m. We show that the interferometer fringes are sensitive to external fields, and suggest that stored-light interferometry could be useful for localized sensing applications., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; Small changes to figure locations

Cs$_2$ Rydberg-ground molecules consisting of a Rydberg, $nD_{J}$ (33 $\leq$ $n$ $\leq$ 39), and a ground state atom, 6$S_{1/2} (F=$3 or 4$)$, are investigated by photo-association spectroscopy in a cold atomic gas. We observe vibrational spectra that correspond to triplet $^T\Sigma$ and mixed $^{S,T}\Sigma$ molecular states. We establish scaling laws for the energies of the lowest vibrational states vs principal quantum number and obtain zero-energy singlet and triplet $s$-wave scattering lengths from experimental data and a Fermi model. Line broadening in electric fields reveals the permanent molecular electric-dipole moments; measured values agree well with calculations. We discuss the negative polarity of the dipole moments, which differs from previously reported cases., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The non-linear and non-local effects in atomic Rydberg media under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) make it a versatile platform for fundamental studies and applications in quantum information. In this paper, we study the dynamics of a Rydberg-EIT system in an ensemble that allows for more than one Rydberg excitation in the propagation direction. The density of two-level atoms is such that transient superradiant effects occur. We experimentally observe a cross-over between coherent collective emission (`flash') of two-level atoms to a Rydberg dressed regime ('dressed flash') under EIT condition. The complex dynamics are characterised using both intensity and time correlation measurements. We show that while steady-state EIT gives a second order correlation $g^{(2)}=0.79\pm 0.04$, the Rydberg-dressed flash exhibits anti-bunching down to $0.2\pm0.04$.

We investigate a long-range interaction between $64D_{5/2}$ Rydberg-atom pairs and antiblockade effect employing a two-color excitation scheme. The first color (pulse A) is set to resonantly excite the Rydberg transition and prepare a few seed atoms, which establish a blockade region due to strong long-range interaction between Rydberg-atom pairs. The second color (pulse B) is blue detuned relative to Rydberg transition and enables further Rydberg excitation of atoms by counteracting the blockade effect. It is found that a few seed atoms lead to a huge difference of the Rydberg excitation with pulse B. The dynamic evolution of antiblockade excitation by varying the pulse-B duration at 30-MHz blue detuning is also investigated. The evolution result reveals that a small amount of seed atoms can trigger an avalanche Rydberg excitation. A modified superatom model is used to simulate the antiblockade effect and relevant dynamic evolution. The simulations are consistent with the experimental measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Active frequency stabilization of a laser to an atomic or molecular resonance underpins many modern-day AMO physics experiments. With a flat background and high signal-to-noise ratio, modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) offers an accurate and stable method for laser locking. Despite its benefits, however, the four-wave mixing process that is inherent to the MTS technique entails that the strongest modulation transfer signals are only observed for closed transitions, excluding MTS from numerous applications. Here, we report for the first time the observation of a magnetically tunable MTS error signal. Using a simple two-magnet arrangement, we show that the error signal for the $^{87}$Rb $F=2 \rightarrow F'=3$ cooling transition can be Zeeman-shifted over a range of $>$15 GHz to any arbitrary point on the rubidium $\text{D}_2$ spectrum. Modulation transfer signals for locking to the $^{87}$Rb $F=1 \rightarrow F'=2$ repumping transition as well as 1 GHz red-detuned to the cooling transition are presented to demonstrate the versatility of this technique, which can readily be extended to the locking of Raman and lattice lasers., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Electrostatic multipole interactions generate long-range Rydberg-Rydberg macrodimer. We calculate the adiabatic potentials of cesium $(nD_{J})_2$ Rydberg macrodimers for principal quantum numbers $n$ ranging from 56 to 62, for $J=3/2$ and $5/2$, and for the allowed values of the conserved sum of the atomic angular-momentum components along the internuclear axis, $M$. For most combinations $(n, M, J)$ exactly one binding potential exists, which should give rise to Rydberg macrodimer states. We study the dependence of the adiabatic potentials on the size of the two-body basis sets used in the calculation, and on the maximal order, $q_{max}$, of the multipole terms included in the calculation. We determine the binding energies and lengths of the binding adiabatic potentials, and investigate their scaling behaviors as a function of the effective principal quantum number; these parameters are relevant to experimental preparation of Rydberg-atom macrodimers. Avoided crossings between adiabatic potentials affect the well shapes and the scaling behaviors differently in two distinct domains in $n$. An optical probe of cesium Rydberg atoms generated in a thermal vapor cell is used to retrieve a baseband signal modulated onto a 16.98-GHz carrier wave in real-time, demonstrating an atom-based quantum receiver suitable for microwave communication. The 60$S_{1/2}$ Rydberg level of cesium atoms in the cell is tracked via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), an established laser-spectroscopic method. The microwave carrier is resonant with the 60$S_{1/2}$ $\rightarrow$ 60$P_{1/2}$ Rydberg transition, resulting in an Autler-Townes (AT) splitting of the EIT signal. Amplitude modulation of the carrier wave results in a corresponding modulation in the optically retrieved AT splitting. Frequency modulation causes a change in relative height of the two AT peaks, which can be optically detected and processed to retrieve the modulation signal. The optical retrieval of the baseband signal does not require electronic demodulation. The method is suitable for carrier frequencies within a range from $\sim 1$~GHz to hundreds of GHz. The baseband bandwidth, which is $\sim$~20~Hz in the present demonstration, can be increased by faster spectroscopic sampling., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Aulter-Townes splitting (ATS) are two similar yet distinct phenomena that modify the transmission of a weak probe field through an absorption medium in the presence of a coupling field, featured in a variety of three-level atomic systems. In many applications it is important to distinguish EIT from ATS splitting. We present EIT and ATS spectra in a cold-atom three-level cascade system, involving the 35$S_{1/2}$ Rydberg state of cesium. The EIT linewidth, $\gamma_{EIT}$, defined as the full width at half maximum (FWHM), and the ATS splitting, $\gamma_{ATS}$, defined as the peak-to-peak distance between AT peak pairs, are used to delineate the EIT and ATS regimes and to characterize the transition between the regimes. In the cold-atom medium, in the weak-coupler (EIT) regime $\gamma_{EIT}$ $\approx$ A + B($\Omega_{c}^2$ + $\Omega_{p}^2)/\Gamma_{eg}$, where $\Omega_{c}$ and $\Omega_{p}$ are the coupler and probe Rabi frequencies, $\Gamma_{eg}$ is the spontaneous decay rate of the intermediate 6P$_{3/2}$ level, and parameters $A$ and $B$ that depend on the laser linewidth. We explore the transition into the strong-coupler (ATS) regime, which is characterized by the linear relation $\gamma_{ATS}$ $\approx$ $\Omega_{c}$. Long-range macrodimers formed by D-state cesium Rydberg atoms are studied in experiments and in calculations. Cesium 62DJ-62DJ Rydberg-atom macrodimers, bonded via long-range multipole interaction, are prepared by two-color photo-association in a cesium atom trap. The first color (pulse A) resonantly excites seed Rydberg atoms, while the second (pulse B, detuned by the molecular binding energy) resonantly excites the Rydberg-atom macrodimer states below the 62DJ pair asymptotes. The Rydberg-atom molecules are measured by extraction of auto-ionization products and Rydberg-atom electric-field ionization, and ion detection. Molecular spectra are compared with calculations of adiabatic molecular potentials. The lifetime of the molecules is obtained from exponential fits to the dependence of the molecular signal on the detection delay time; lifetimes of about 6 us are found.

We investigate atom-based electric-field calibration and polarization measurement of a 100-MHz linearly polarized radio-frequency (RF) field using cesium Rydberg-atom electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a room-temperature vapor cell. The calibration method is based on matching experimental data with the results of a theoretical Floquet model. The utilized 60$D_J$ fine structure Floquet levels exhibit $J$- and $m_j$-dependent AC Stark shifts and splittings, and develop even-order RF-modulation sidebands. The Floquet map of cesium 60$D_J$ fine structure states exhibits a series of exact crossings between states of different $m_j$, which are not RF-coupled. These exact level crossings are employed to perform a rapid and precise ($\pm 0.5\%$) calibration of the RF electric field. We also map out three series of narrow avoided crossings between fine structure Floquet levels of equal $m_j$ and different $J$, which are weakly coupled by the RF field via a Raman process. The coupling leads to narrow avoided crossings that can also be applied as spectroscopic markers for RF field calibration. We further find that the line-strength ratio of intersecting Floquet levels with different $m_j$ provides a fast and robust measurement of the RF field's polarization., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We study Rydberg atoms modulated by strong radio-frequency (RF) fields with a frequency of 70 MHz. The Rydberg atoms are prepared in a room temperature cesium cell, and their level structure is probed using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). As the RF field increases from the weak- into the strong-field regime, the range of observed RF-induced phenomena progresses from AC level shifts through increasingly pronounced and numerous RF-modulation sidebands to complex state-mixing and level-crossings with high-l hydrogen-like states. Weak anharmonic admixtures in the RF field generate clearly visible modifications in the Rydberg-EIT spectra. A Floquet analysis is employed to model the Rydberg spectra, and good agreement with the experimental observations is found. Our results show that all-optical spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms in vapor cells can serve as an antenna-free, atom-based and calibration-free technique to measure and map RF electric fields and to analyze their higher-harmonic contents., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures
