In this study, D-mannose-modified nanoliposomes (MLipo@OVA) were developed to facilitate the targeted delivery of ovalbumin (OVA) to macrophages. The subsequent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and macrophage-polarizing effects of OVA were investigated. The nanoliposomes were designed with DSPE-PEG and DPPC to enhance the bioavailability and stability of OVA. In vitro analysis showed that MLipo@OVA significantly increased macrophage uptake, with D-mannose further enhancing this effect. MLipo@OVA reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β) and increased anti-inflammatory IL-10 levels in LPS-induced macrophages, primarily via the inhibition of the TLR4/NF-κB pathway. Furthermore, ROS levels were decreased, SOD and GSH activity was enhanced, the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway was activated, and the compound exhibited strong antioxidant activity. MLipo@OVA also promoted M2 macrophage polarization by upregulating CD206 and Arg-1 and downregulating iNOS. Overall, these results indicate that MLipo@OVA could be used as a nanomedicine to facilitate targeted anti-inflammatory and antioxidant therapies.

Pathogenic missense mutation of the FGF12 gene is responsible for a variable disease phenotypic spectrum. Disease-specific therapies require precise dissection of the relationship between different mutations and phenotypes. The lack of a proper animal model hinders the investigation of related diseases, such as early-onset epileptic encephalopathy. Here, an FGF12AV52H mouse model was generated using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which altered the A isoform without affecting the B isoform. The FGF12AV52H mice exhibited seizure susceptibility, while no spontaneous seizures were observed. The increased excitability in dorsal hippocampal CA3 neurons was confirmed by patch-clamp recordings. Furthermore, immunostaining showed that the balance of excitatory/inhibitory neurons in the hippocampus of the FGF12AV52H mice was perturbed. The increases in inhibitory SOM+ neurons and excitatory CaMKII+ neurons were heterogeneous. Moreover, the locomotion, anxiety levels, risk assessment behavior, social behavior, and cognition of the FGF12AV52H mice were investigated by elevated plus maze, open field, three-chamber sociability, and novel object tests, respectively. Cognition deficit, impaired risk assessment, and social behavior with normal social indexes were observed, implying complex consequences of V52H FGF12A in mice. Together, these data suggest that the function of FGF12A in neurons can be immediate or long-term and involves modulation of ion channels and the differentiation and maturation of neurons. The FGF12AV52H mouse model increases the understanding of the function of FGF12A, and it is of great importance for revealing the complex network of the FGF12 gene in physiological and pathological processes.

Abstract Though plenty of research has been conducted to improve the low intrinsic electronic conductivity of NASICON‐structured NaTi2(PO4)3 (NTP), realizing sodium‐ion batteries with high areal/volumetric capacity still remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a multiscale design from anode material to electrode structure is proposed to obtain a gadolinium‐ion‐doped and carbon‐coated NTP composite electrode (NTP‐Gd‐C), in which gadolinium ion doping, oxygen vacancy, optimized structure, N‐doped carbon coating, and bridging on the three‐dimensional network are simultaneously achieved. In the whole electrode, the excellent hierarchical electronic/ionic conductivity and structural stability are simultaneously improved via the synergistic optimization of NTP‐Gd‐C. As a result, excellent electrochemical performances of NTP‐Gd‐C electrode with a high areal/volumetric capacity of 1.0 mAh cm−2/142.8 mAh cm−3, high rate capability (58.3 mAh g−1 at 200 C), long cycle life (ultralow capacity fading of 0.004% per cycle under 10,000 cycles), and wide‐temperature electrochemical performances (97.0 mAh g−1 at 2 C under −20°C) are achieved. Moreover, the NTP‐Gd‐C//Na3V2(PO4)3/C full cell also delivers an excellent rate capacity of 42.0 mAh g−1 at 200 C and long‐term high‐capacity retention of 66.2% after 4000 cycles at 20 C.

The Crowned Porcupine Optimization (CPO) algorithm exhibits certain deficiencies in initialization efficiency, convergence speed, and adaptability. To address these issues, this paper proposes an enhanced Crowned Porcupine Optimization algorithm (ICPO) based on multiple improvement strategies. ICPO optimizes the initialization process by introducing Logistic chaotic mapping, thereby expanding the search space. It accelerates convergence through an elite retention strategy and enhances global search capability by integrating stochastic operations, mutation-like operations, and crossover-like operations to increase population diversity. Additionally, adaptive step tuning based on fitness values is employed to comprehensively improve the algorithm’s performance. To verify the effectiveness of ICPO, 23 standard functions were used for a comprehensive evaluation, and its practicality was further validated through optimization of actual engineering design problems. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in convergence speed, solution quality, and adaptability with ICPO.

Abstract High mortality due to hygrothermal stress during heat waves is mostly linked to cardiovascular malfunction, the most serious of which are malignant arrhythmias. However, the mechanism associated with hygrothermal stress leading to malignant arrhythmias remains unclear. The energy metabolism regulated by liver kinase B1 (LKB1) and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the electrical signaling based on gap junction protein, connexin43 (Cx43), plays important roles in the development of cardiac arrhythmias. In order to investigate whether hygrothermal stress induces arrhythmias via the LKB1-AMPK-Cx43 pathway, Sprague–Dawley rats were exposed to high temperature and humidity for constructing the hygrothermal stress model. A final choice of 40 °C and 85% humidity was made by pre-exploration based on different gradient environmental conditions with reference to arrhythmia event-inducing stability and risk of sudden death. Then, the incidence of arrhythmic events, as well as the expression, phosphorylation at Ser368, and distribution of Cx43 in the myocardium, were examined. Meanwhile, the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase activator, Acadesine, was also administered to investigate the role played by AMPK in the process. Our results showed that hygrothermal stress induced malignant arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, and severe atrioventricular block. Besides, hygrothermal stress decreased the phosphorylation of Cx43 at Ser368, induced proarrhythmic redistribution of Cx43 from polar to lateral sides of the cardiomyocytes, and also caused LKB1 and phosphorylated-AMPK expression to be less abundant. While, pretreatment with Acadesine significantly actived the LKB1-AMPK-Cx43 pathway and thus ameliorated malignant arrhythmias, indicating that the hygrothermal stress-induced arrhythmias is associated with the redistribution of gap junctions in cardiomyocytes and the organism's energy metabolism.

Abstract Identification of active sites in catalytic materials is important and helps establish approaches to the precise design of catalysts for achieving high reactivity. Generally, active sites of conventional heterogeneous catalysts can be single atom, nanoparticle or a metal/oxide interface. Herein, we report that metal/oxide reverse interfaces can also be active sites which are created from the coordinated migration of metal and oxide atoms. As an example, a Pd1/CeO2 single-atom catalyst prepared via atom trapping, which is otherwise inactive at 30 °C, is able to completely oxidize formaldehyde after steam treatment. The enhanced reactivity is due to the formation of a Ce2O3-Pd nanoparticle domain interface, which is generated by the migration of both Ce and Pd atoms on the atom-trapped Pd1/CeO2 catalyst during steam treatment. We show that the generation of metal oxide-metal interfaces can be achieved in other heterogeneous catalysts due to the coordinated mobility of metal and oxide atoms, demonstrating the formation of a new active interface when using metal single-atom material as catalyst precursor.

Highlights The LiNO3-implanted electroactive β phase polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene was built as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase layer for dendrite suppression. The electronegatively charged polymer layer can capture Li ion on its surface to form Li-ion charged channels and recompense the ionic flux of electrolytes via continuous supply of Li ion. The modified Li anode achieved a long cycle life over 2000 h under ultrahigh Li utilization of 50% in symmetric cell and worked in full cell for 100 cycles at harsh condition of extremely low N/P of 0.83.

Scorpions, an ancient group of venomous invertebrates, have existed for over 430 million years. Their toxins, important for predation and defense, exhibit a variety of biological and pharmacological activities. Research on scorpion toxins has spanned decades. Notably, the toxin genes of Mesobuthus martensii (Scorpiones: Buthidae), a well-known Chinese herbal medicine, have been described at genomic and proteomic levels. However, previous studies primarily focused on the toxin genes expressed in the venom glands, overlooking their expression in multiple tissues. This study analyzed transcriptomes from 14 tissues of M. martensii. Gene annotation revealed 83 toxin and toxin-like genes, including those affecting sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride ion channels. Approximately 70% of toxin genes were highly expressed in the vesicle; additionally, some exhibited low or no expression in the vesicle while showing high expression in other tissues. Beyond the vesicle, high expression levels of toxin genes were observed in metasoma segments II-V, blood, lateral eyes, chelicerae, legs, pedipalp chelae, femurs, and patellae. This expression pattern suggests that toxin genes are recruited from multiple tissues and may help prevent intraspecific harm during courtship and competition for prey. These findings inspire further research into the evolutionary recruitment process of scorpion toxins.

Transition metal supported N-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are viewed as the promising candidate to replace Pt-group metal (PGM) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the stability of M-N-C is extremely challenging due to the demetalation, H2O2 attack, etc. in the strongly oxidative conditions of PEMFCs. In this study, we demonstrate the universal effect of Zn on promoting the stability of atomically dispersed M-Nx/C (M = Co, Fe, Mn) catalysts and the enhancement mechanism is unveiled for the first time. The best-performing dual-metal-site Zn-Co-N-C catalyst exhibits a high half-wave potential (E1/2) value of 0.81 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in acid and outstanding durability with no activity decay after 15,000 accelerated degradation test (ADT) cycles at 60 °C, surpassing most reported Co-based PGM-free catalysts in acid media. For comparison, the Co-N-C in the absence of Zn suffers from a rapid degradation after ADT due to the demetalation and higher H2O2 yield. X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest the more negative formation energy (by 1.2 eV) and increased charge transfer of Zn-Co dual-site structure compared to Co-N-C could strength the Co-N bonds against the demetalation and the optimized d-band center accounts for the improved ORR kinetics.

Abstract The direct oxidation of methane to methanol (MTM) remains a significant challenge in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high dissociation energy of the C-H bond in methane and the high desorption energy of methanol. In this work, we demonstrate a breakthrough in selective MTM by achieving a high methanol space-time yield of 2678 mmol molCu−1 h−1 with 93% selectivity in a continuous methane-steam reaction at 400 °C. The superior performance is attributed to the confinement effect of 6-membered ring (6MR) voids in SSZ-13 zeolite, which host isolated Cu-OH single sites. Our results provide a deeper understanding of the role of Cu-zeolites in continuous methane-steam to methanol conversion and pave the way for further improvement.

The use of ocean bottom seismometers provides an effective means of studying the process and the dynamic of cold seeps by continuously recording micro-events produced by sub-seafloor fluid migration. We deployed a four-component Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) at an active site of the Haima cold seep from 6 November to 19 November in 2021. Here, we present the results of this short-term OBS monitoring. We first examine the OBS record manually to distinguish (by their distinctive seismographic signatures) four types of events: shipping noises, vibrations from our remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations, local earthquakes, and short duration events (SDEs). Only the SDEs are further discussed in this work. Such SDEs are similar to those observed in other sea areas and are interpreted to be correlated with sub-seafloor fluid migration. In the OBS data collected during the 14-day monitoring period. We identify five SDEs. Compared to the SDE occurrence rate observed in other cold seep regions, five events is rather low, from which it could be inferred that fluid migration, and subsequent gas seepage, is not very active at the Haima site. This conclusion agrees with multi-beam and chemical observations at that site. Our observations thus provide further constraint on the seepage activity in this location. This is the first time that cold seep-related SDEs have been identified in the South China Sea, expanding the list of sea areas where SDEs are now linked to cold seep fluid migration.

BackgroundThe long-term prognosis of patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) combined with orthostatic hypotension (OH) has rarely been reported. This research was designed to examine whether OH increases the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death among patients with stable CAD.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed retired military personnel over 65 years of age who were hospitalized at the General Hospital of Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army between March and July 2010. A total of 924 patients with stable CAD were included, among whom 263 had OH. The risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular death in OH and non-OH groups were analyzed with the Cox proportional hazards models, and restricted cubic spline plots were utilized for subgroup analyses. Furthermore, competing risk models were applied for sensitivity analyses.ResultsThe median age of the patients was 82.00 (80.00–85.00) years. Over 159 months of follow-up, the loss to follow-up rate was 2.27%, and all-cause mortality was observed in 574 (63.57%) patients, including 184 with OH. Moreover, cardiovascular death occurred in 127 patients (13.73%), with 58 cases associated with OH. Abstract Background The prognostic value of in-hospital hemoglobin drop in non-overt bleeding patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) remains insufficiently investigated. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed based on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-IV database. 2,334 ICU-admitted non-overt bleeders diagnosed with AMI were included. In-hospital hemoglobin values (baseline value on admission and nadir value during hospitalization) were available. Hemoglobin drop was defined as a positive difference between admission and in-hospital nadir hemoglobin. The primary endpoint was 180-day all-cause mortality. The time-dependent Cox proportional hazard models were structured to analyze the connection between hemoglobin drop and mortality. Results 2,063 patients (88.39%) experienced hemoglobin drop during hospitalization. IntroductionAnti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is a common autoimmune encephalitis, and it is associated with psychosis, dyskinesia, and seizures. Anti-NMDAR encephalitis (NMDARE) in juveniles and adults presents different clinical charactreistics. However, the pathogenesis of juvenile anti-NMDAR encephalitis remains unclear, partly because of a lack of suitable animal models.MethodsWe developed a model of juvenile anti-NMDAR encephalitis using active immunization with an amino terminal domain peptide from the GluN1 subunit (GluN1356 − 385) against NMDARs in 3-week-old female C57BL/6J mice.ResultsImmunofluorescence staining suggested that autoantibody levels in the hippocampus increased, and HEK-293T cells staining identified the target of the autoantibodies as GluN1, suggesting that GluN1-specific immunoglobulin G was successfully induced. Behavior assessment showed that the mice suffered significant cognition impairment and sociability reduction, which is similar to what is observed in patients affected by anti-NMDAR encephalitis. The mice also exhibited impaired long-term potentiation in hippocampal CA1. Pilocarpine-induced epilepsy was more severe and had a longer duration, while no spontaneous seizures were observed.ConclusionThe juvenile mouse model for anti-NMDAR encephalitis is of great importance to investigate the pathological mechanism and therapeutic strategies for the disease, and could accelerate the study of autoimmune encephalitis.

Abstract Manufacturing abrasion‐resistant superhydrophobic matters is challenging due to the fragile feature of the introduced micro‐/nanoscale surface roughness. Besides the long‐term durability, large scale at meter level, and 3D complex structures are of great importance for the superhydrophobic objects used across diverse industries. Here it is shown that abrasion‐resistant, half‐a‐meter scaled superhydrophobic objects can be one‐step realized by the selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing technology using hydrophobic‐fumed‐silica (HFS)/polymer composite grains. The HFS grains serve as the hydrophobic guests while the sintered polymeric network provides the mechanical strength, leading to low‐adhesion, intrinsic superhydrophobic objects with desired 3D structures. It is found that as‐printed structures remained anti‐wetting capabilities even after undergoing different abrasion tests, including knife cutting test, rude file grinding test, 1000 cycles of sandpaper friction test, tape test and quicksand impacting test, illustrating their abrasion‐resistant superhydrophobic stability. This strategy is applied to manufacture a shell of the unmanned aerial vehicle and an abrasion‐resistant superhydrophobic shoe, showing the industrial customization of large‐scale superhydrophobic objects. The findings thus provide insight for designing intrinsic superhydrophobic objects via the SLS 3D printing strategy that might find use in drag‐reduce, anti‐fouling, or other industrial fields in harsh operating environments.

Lithium–indium (Li-In) alloys are important anode materials for sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), but how different Li concentrations in the alloy anodes impact the electrochemical performance of ASSBs remains unexplored. This paper systematically investigates the impact that different Li concentrations in Li-In anodes have on the performance of ASSBs. We show that In with 1 ​wt% Li (LiIn-1) exhibits the best performance for ASSBs among all the tested Li-In anodes. In essence, LiIn-1 not only provides sufficient Li to compensate for first-cycle capacity loss in the anode but also facilitates the formation of a LiIn alloy phase that has the best charge transfer kinetics among all the LixIn alloy phases. The ASSB with a LiIn-1 anode and a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode reached 3400 cycles at an initial capacity of 125 mAh/g. Remarkably, ASSBs with a high cathode active material (CAM) loading of 36 ​mg/cm2 delivered a high areal capacity of 4.05 mAh/cm2 at high current density (4.8 ​mA/cm2), with a capacity retention of 92% after 740 cycles. At an ultra-high CAM loading of 55.3 ​mg/cm2, the ASSB achieved a stable areal capacity of 8.4 mAh/cm2 at current density of 1.7 ​mA/cm2. These results bring us one step closer to the practical application of ASSBs.

BackgroundPatients with non-ST-segment coronary artery syndrome (NSTE-ACS) have significant heterogeneity in their coronary arteries. A better assessment of significant coronary artery stenosis (SCAS) in low-to-intermediate risk NSTE-ACS patients would help identify who might benefit from invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Our study aimed to develop a multivariable-based model for pretesting SCAS in suspected NSTE-ACS with low-to-intermediate risk.MethodsThis prediction nomogram was constructed retrospectively in 469 suspected NSTE-ACS patients with low-to-intermediate risk. Patients were divided into a development group (n = 331, patients admitted to hospital before 1 May 2021) and a temporal validation group (n = 138, patients admitted to hospital since 1 May 2021). The outcome was existing SCAS, including left main artery stenosis ≥50% or any subepicardial coronary artery stenosis ≥70%, all confirmed by invasive coronary angiography. Pretest predictors were selected using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and stepwise logistic regression.ResultsDerivation analyses from the development group (n = 331, admitted before 1 May 2021) generated the 7 strongest predictors out of 25 candidate variables comprising smoker, diabetes, heart rate, cardiac troponin T, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and left atrial diameter. This nomogram model showed excellent discrimination ability with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.83 in the development set and 0.79 in the validation dataset. Good calibration was generally displayed, although it slightly overestimated patients’ SCAS risk in the validation group. Decision curve analysis demonstrated the clinical benefit of this model, indicating its value in clinical practice. Furthermore, an optimal cut-off of prediction probability was assigned as 0.61 according to the Youden index.ConclusionA prediction nomogram consisting of seven readily available clinical parameters was established to pretest the probability of SCAS in suspected NSTE-ACS patients with low-to-intermediate risk, which may serve as a cost-effective risk stratification tool and thus assist in initial decision making.

Abstract Background Although electrical stimulation of the peripheral and central nervous systems has attracted much attention owing to its potential therapeutic effects on neuropsychiatric diseases, its non-cell-type-specific activation characteristics may hinder its wide clinical application. Unlike electrical methodologies, optogenetics has more recently been applied as a cell-specific approach for precise modulation of neural functions in vivo, for instance on the vagus nerve. The commonly used implantable optical waveguides are silica optical fibers, which for brain optogenetic stimulation (BOS) are usually fixed on the skull bone. However, due to the huge mismatch of mechanical properties between the stiff optical implants and deformable vagal tissues, vagus nerve optogenetic stimulation (VNOS) in free-behaving animals continues to be a great challenge. Results To resolve this issue, we developed a simplified method for the fabrication of flexible and stretchable polymer optical fibers (POFs), which show significantly improved characteristics for in vivo optogenetic applications, specifically a low Young’s modulus, high stretchability, improved biocompatibility, and long-term stability. We implanted the POFs into the primary motor cortex of C57 mice after the expression of CaMKIIα-ChR2-mCherry detected frequency-dependent neuronal activity and the behavioral changes during light delivery. The viability of POFs as implantable waveguides for VNOS was verified by the increased firing rate of the fast-spiking GABAergic interneurons recorded in the left vagus nerve of VGAT-ChR2 transgenic mice. Furthermore, VNOS was carried out in free-moving rodents via chronically implanted POFs, and an inhibitory influence on the cardiac system and an anxiolytic effect on behaviors was shown. Conclusion Our results demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of the use of POFs in chronic optogenetic modulations in both of the central and peripheral nervous systems, providing new information for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract Background and aims Atherosclerosis is a vital cause of cardiovascular diseases. The correlation between proteinuria and atherosclerosis, however, has not been confirmed. This study aimed to assess whether there is a relationship between proteinuria and atherosclerosis. Methods From January 2016 to September 2020, 13,545 asymptomatic subjects from four centres in southern China underwent dipstick proteinuria testing and carotid atherosclerosis examination. Data on demography and past medical history were collected, and laboratory examinations were performed. The samples consisted of 7405 subjects (4875 males and 2530 females), excluding subjects failing to reach predefined standards and containing enough information. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to adjust the influence of traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis on the results. Results Compared with proteinuria-negative subjects, proteinuria-positive subjects had a higher prevalence rate of carotid atherosclerosis. The differences were statistically significant (22.6% vs. 26.7%, χ2 = 10.03, p = 0.002). After adjusting for common risk factors for atherosclerosis, age, sex, BMI, blood lipids, blood pressure, renal function, hypertensive disease, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidaemia, proteinuria was an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (OR = 1.191, 95% CI 1.015–1.398, p = 0.033). The Hosmer–Lemeshow test was used to test the risk prediction model of atherosclerosis, and the results showed that the model has high goodness of fit and strong independent variable prediction ability. Conclusions Proteinuria is independently related to carotid atherosclerosis. With the increase in proteinuria level, the risk of carotid atherosclerotic plaque increases. For patients with positive proteinuria, further examination of atherosclerosis should not be ignored.

Abstract Background Pneumocystis jirovecii and Aspergillus fumigatus, are opportunistic pathogenic fungus that has a major impact on mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. With the potential to invade multiple organs, early and accurate diagnosis is essential to the survival of SLE patients, establishing an early diagnosis of the infection, especially coinfection by Pneumocystis jirovecii and Aspergillus fumigatus, still remains a great challenge. Case presentation In this case, we reported that the application of next -generation sequencing in diagnosing Pneumocystis jirovecii and Aspergillus fumigatus coinfection in a Chinese girl with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Voriconazole was used to treat pulmonary aspergillosis, besides sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP), and caspofungin acetate to treat Pneumocystis jirovecii infection for 6 days. On Day 10 of admission, her chest radiograph displayed obvious absorption of bilateral lung inflammation though the circumstance of repeated fever had not improved. Unfortunately, the patient discharged from the hospital since the financial burden, and during the follow-up, it was documented the patient died within one week after discharge. Conclusions This successful application of the next generation sequencing assisting the rapid diagnosis of Pneumocystis jirovecii and Aspergillus fumigatus coinfection provides a new perspective in the clinical approach against the systematic fungi infections and highlights the potential of this technique in rapid etiological diagnosis.

The ferromanganese nodules (FMNs) developing in soils of karst regions are naturally characterized by high heavy metal(loid)s contents due to several geological factors. Soil FMNs can considerably influence the geochemical behaviors of soil heavy metal(loid)s. However, the mechanisms of the FMN effects in soils of karst areas soils remain unclear, resulting in less understanding of the development process of karst soils. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate 21 individual FMNs collected in soils derived from carbonate rocks in Guangxi province, China, to reveal the mechanisms of heavy metal(loid)s enrichment in FMNs. The studied soil FMNs were mainly composed of Fe2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, MnO2, and TiO2, with proportions of 25.95, 20.8, 19.07, 3.98, and 1.23%, respectively. Compared to the background soils of Guangxi, the soil FMNs exhibited great enrichment in heavy metal(loid)s. The enrichment factors followed the order of Cd (243.33), Cr (49.67), Cu (5.46), Ni (8.37), Pb (23.68), Zn (15.4), and As (20.11). The heavy metal(loid)s contents in the soil FMNs of the karst areas were much higher than those observed in non-karst areas worldwide. According to the principal component analysis (PCA) results, the first three principal components contributed to about 88.81% of the total variance of the FMN compositions. PC1 (50.90%) suggested the presence of quartz, feldspar, and clay minerals-related elements in the soil FMNs, whereas PC2 (27.10%) and PC3 (10.81%) indicated the presence of Mn(oxyhydr)oxides and Fe(oxyhydr)oxides-related elements in the soil FMNs, respectively. The obtained selective extraction results demonstrated that up to 93% of the total contents of heavy metal(loid)s, namely, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, and Zn, were bound to Mn(oxyhydr)oxides. In contrast, oxyanionic species (As and Cr) were predominantly sequestered in Fe(oxyhydr)oxides.

Abstract Metals fluorides (MFs) are potential conversion cathodes to replace commercial intercalation cathodes. However, the application of MFs is impeded by their poor electronic/ionic conductivity and severe decomposition of electrolyte. Here, a composite cathode of FeF2 and polymer‐derived carbon (FeF2@PDC) with excellent cycling performance is reported. The composite cathode is composed of nanorod‐shaped FeF2 embedded in PDC matrix with excellent mechanical strength and electronic/ionic conductivity. The FeF2@PDC enables a reversible capacity of 500 mAh g–1 with a record long cycle lifetime of 1900 cycles. Remarkably, the FeF2@PDC can be cycled at a record rate of 60 C with a reversible capacity of 107 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles. Advanced electron microscopy reveals that the in situ formation of stable Fe3O4 layers on the surface of FeF2 prevents the electrolyte decomposition and leaching of iron (Fe), thus enhancing the cyclability. The results provide a new understanding to FeF2 electrochemistry, and a strategy to radically improve the electrochemical performance of FeF2 cathode for lithium‐ion battery applications.

Abstract Background Streptomyces cacaoi, Gram-positive, branched, filamentous bacillus forms without fragmentation, are saprophytic soil organisms rarely known to cause invasive infections other than mycetoma. Here we describe a case of chronic suppurative otitis media caused by Streptomyces cacaoi in a patient with hyperlipidemia in China. Case presentation A 62-year-old female patient with hyperlipidemia suffered chronic suppurative otitis media caused by Streptomyces cacaoi. She had a favorable outcome with a 4-week course of ofloxacin ear drops. Conclusions Streptomyces cacaoi is rarely reported to cause human infection. The introduction of molecular techniques improves the ability to identify rare species such as Streptomyces considerably. We report the case improve our ability to identify this pathogen and expand the range of known bacterial causes of human infection.

Abstract All‐solid‐state (ASS) Na–S batteries are promising for a large‐scale energy‐storage system owing to numerous merits. However, the high conversion reaction barrier impedes their practical application. In this work, the basic mechanism on how Se catalyzes the conversion reaction in the Na–S batteries is unraveled. The sodiation/desodiation of Na–SeS2 nanobatteries are systematically evaluated via in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) with a microheating device. The real‐time analyses reveal an amorphous Na–SexSy intermediate phase appears during the direct conversion from SeS2 to Na2S, and a reverse reaction succeeds at 100 °C with a prior formation of Se. The absence of polysulfides and a much lower desodiation temperature in contrast to Na–S nanobatteries demonstrate that the Se incorporation significantly lowers the conversion reaction barrier. According to these findings, the ASS SeS2 batteries using a Na3SbS4 solid electrolyte (SE) are assembled using various SE:C ratios in the composite cathodes to investigate the effect of the ion and electron transport on the electrochemical properties, including the effective transport properties, MacMullin number, and the tortuosity factor. The obtained results in turn confirm the findings from the in situ TEM. These findings are applicable to optimize other S‐based active materials and improve their utilization.

Temporal lobe epilepsy, a chronic disease of the brain characterized by degeneration of the hippocampus, has impaired risk assessment. Risk assessment is vital for survival in complex environments with potential threats. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. The intricate balance of gene regulation and expression across different brain regions is related to the structure and function of specific neuron subtypes. In particular, excitation/inhibition imbalance caused by hyperexcitability of glutamatergic neurons and/or dysfunction of GABAergic neurons, have been implicated in epilepsy. First, we estimated the risk assessment (RA) by evaluating the behavior of mice in the center of the elevated plus maze, and found that the kainic acid-induced temporal lobe epilepsy mice were specifically impaired their RA. This experiment evaluated approach-RA, with a forthcoming approach to the open arm, and avoid-RA, with forthcoming avoidance of the open arm. Next, results from free-moving electrophysiological recordings showed that in the hippocampus, ∼7% of putative glutamatergic neurons and ∼15% of putative GABAergic neurons were preferentially responsive to either approach-risk assessment or avoid-risk assessment, respectively. In addition, ∼12% and ∼8% of dorsal lateral septum GABAergic neurons were preferentially responsive to approach-risk assessment and avoid-risk assessment, respectively. Notably, during the impaired approach-risk assessment, the favorably activated dorsal dentate gyrus and CA3 glutamatergic neurons increased (∼9%) and dorsal dentate gyrus and CA3 GABAergic neurons decreased (∼7%) in the temporal lobe epilepsy mice. Then, we used RNA sequencing and immunohistochemical staining to investigate which subtype of GABAergic neuron loss may contribute to excitation/inhibition imbalance. The results show that temporal lobe epilepsy mice exhibit significant neuronal loss and reorganization of neural networks. In particular, the dorsal dentate gyrus and CA3 somatostatin-positive neurons and dorsal lateral septum cholecystokinin-positive neurons are selectively vulnerable to damage after temporal lobe epilepsy. Optogenetic activation of the hippocampal glutamatergic neurons or chemogenetic inhibition of the hippocampal somatostatin neurons directly disrupts RA, suggesting that an excitation/inhibition imbalance in the dHPC dorsal lateral septum circuit results in the impairment of RA behavior. Taken together, this study provides insight into epilepsy and its comorbidity at different levels, including molecular, cell, neural circuit, and behavior, which are expected to decrease injury and premature mortality in patients with epilepsy.

Due to the double disturbance effect of dredging and filling, there will be a problem with weir slope stability after the formation of a fill type saturated clay weir. In order to study the influence of water-level fluctuation on the instability and seepage failure of the dump-fill cofferdam, the saturated-unsaturated seepage theory and strength reduction method are embedded into the finite element system such that the fluid-solid coupling stability of the dump-fill cofferdam is analyzed. The results show that the influence of water-level fluctuation on the instability and seepage failure of the dump-fill cofferdam can be revealed by the coupling analysis excellently. The variation of the saturation line of the cofferdam is consistent with the variation of water-level rising, but the change response of the saturation line of the cofferdam has a lag property during the water-level decline process in that the water level changes faster. The maximum displacement of the cofferdam can be approximated as two stages, namely, the stable growth stage and the accelerated growth stage (slip initiation), in which the influence of the water-level fluctuation on the displacement of stable growth stage is more obvious. Based on the fluid-solid coupling analysis, the most dangerous sliding surface of the cofferdam is located at the position of the horse path, with a critical strength reduction coefficient of approximately 1.475. The possibility of seepage failure of the cofferdam will be increased if the water level exceeds the height of the impermeable wall.

Summary: Controllable IR-reflection systems can be applied to displays, adaptive military camouflages, thermal managements, and many other fields. However, current reported controllable IR-reflection systems suffer from utilizing rigid materials, complicated devices, or high working temperature/voltage, which are not suitable for their widespread applications toward soft systems. Herein, inspired by cephalopods, we demonstrate a facile and scalable method for adaptive IR reflection based on a Janus rubber film, which is composed of aluminum-coated microsheets (AMSs)/rubber composite top and a rubber only bottom. Expansion of the Janus rubber film causes random arrangement of AMSs to stay planar, resulting in the change from IR scattering to concentrated IR reflection. By fixing the Janus rubber films upon the arranged tubes, as-prepared arrays could display complex and changeable patterns by selectively pumping tubes. Being facile and of general validity, our strategies broaden the scope of future controllable IR reflecting applications for environmental IR camouflages and displays.

Weaker ferritic/matensitic steels rather than stronger austenitic steels are usually candidates for nuclear reactors since they do not easily swell under irradiation. Here, the authors make an ultrastrong lanthanum-doped nanocrystalline austenitic steel that is thermally stable and radiation-tolerant.
