Abstract Anthropogenic climate warming is predicted to increase the intensity of global tropical cyclones (TCs) on decadal timescales, known as the ‘temperature-TC intensity’ paradigm. However, no proxy is currently available to directly quantify TC intensity in the northwestern Pacific region over centennial to millennial timescales. Here, we reconstruct the intensity of past TCs inferred from event-beds detected in two sedimentary systems in eastern China spanning approximately 1910 to 645 yr BP using an instrumental-calibrated technique, thereby encompassing a sufficiently wide range of temperatures to test the paradigm in the time domain. Intriguingly, our two intensity indices, based on flooding depth and wind speed, provide the initial quantitative evidence that TC intensity in eastern China has been anomalously weak since around 1485 ± 45 yr BP, with a reduction of approximately 30 ± 8% in intensity, despite no concurrent temperature shift. This reduction appears to have been pre-conditioned by a combined influence of a weaker El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a stronger Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, and an increased level of Saharan dust. We suggest that the magnitudes of these factors may have crossed a tipping point and have not reverted to their pre-shift levels since that time, resulting in their impact on TC intensity exceeding that of temperature by triggering changes in the oceanic and atmospheric state within the tropical Pacific region where TCs originate.

Abstract Hurricane Ike, which struck the United States in September 2008, was the ninth most expensive hurricane in terms of damages. It caused nearly USD 30 billion in damage after making landfall on the Bolivar Peninsula, Texas. We used the Delft3d-FM/SWAN hydrodynamic and spectral wave model to simulate the storm surge inundation around Galveston Bay during Hurricane Ike. Damage curves were established through the relationship between eight hydrodynamic parameters (water depth, flow velocity, unit discharge, flow momentum flux, significant wave height, wave energy flux, total water depth (flow depth plus wave height), and total (flow plus wave) force) simulated by the model and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance damage data. The NFIP insurance database contains a large amount of building damage data, building stories, and elevation, as well as other information from the Ike event. We found that the damage curves are sensitive to the model grid resolution, building elevation, and the number of stories. We also found that the resulting damage functions are steeper than those developed for residential structures in many other locations.

The main focus of studying sediment sources in marine areas is to determine the properties of clastic minerals originating from different rivers. Variations in the characteristics of clastic minerals occur due to differences in the types of source rocks within the watershed. Determining the source rock of clastic minerals in the marine area can improve the accuracy of provenance analysis. Electron probe microanalysis of 258 amphibole grains from six surface stations in the South Yellow Sea (SYS) was conducted to calculate the numerical and characteristic values of cations in the crystal structure. The results showed that amphibole in the SYS is mainly magnesiohornblende (52.2% ~ 81.4%) in the calcic amphibole subgroup, followed by tschermakite. The source rock types of amphibole are mainly different types of magmatic (ultrabasic, basic, and intermediate acidic) and metamorphic rocks. Amphibole derived from intermediate-acid intrusive rocks accounts for a large proportion (>40%). The genetic analysis of clastic amphibole in the SYS showed that most of the medium-acid invading amphibole belong to crust-mantle type, followed by mantle type. Most of the amphibole from metamorphic origins are of medium-low pressure type (± 80%). Combined with electron probe analysis of amphibole from the Huanghe River (the Yellow River, HH) and Changjiang River (the Yangtze River, CJ), the amphibole in the SYS exhibits characteristics inherited from these two rivers. The northern sea area has a strong resemblance to the sediments from the HH, while the southern area is more influenced by sediments supply from the CJ. The central area represents a mixed zone with a higher sediment supply from the HH. The clastic amphibole deduces the type of source rock in different watersheds, serving as a crucial link between the source rock, watershed, and marine area, providing a basis for provenance analysis.

Typhoon-induced storms surges and river flooding events represent two types of natural disasters that affect a wide range, occurring with high frequency and causing serious societal losses. Due to the limited duration of instrumental records, there is an inadequate understanding of the patterns and mechanisms underlying the variations in typhoons and floods. The interpretation of sedimentary records aptly compensates for these deficiencies in terms of the temporal scale, becoming a crucial medium for extending the temporal span of typhoon and flood records. Previous studies in this field have primarily focused on the identification of single types of extreme events. The Changjiang Estuary, particularly Chongming Island, is significantly affected by both typhoons and river floods, making it an excellent area for synchronous comparative studies of these two types of extreme events. Based on the analysis of a core sample, ZP02, collected from Chongming Island, in terms of chronological, sedimentological, and geochemical characteristics, specific tracing fingerprints for event deposits from typhoon and flood events are established. Sediments from typhoon events generally exhibit erosive contact surfaces, coarser grain sizes, and a tendency to become finer upwards, often featuring layers mixed with coarse sand and shell fragments. In contrast, flood event deposits vary in grain size, either coarser or finer, with abrupt contact surfaces compared to normal sediment layers, and are predominantly brownish-yellow in color. The fingerprint tracing results indicate that the typhoon event layers are characterized by high values in principal component 2 (PC2) of the elements, Zr/Fe and Sr/Fe ratios, with low values in principal component 1 (PC1) the elements and Ti/Ca ratio. Flood event deposits are marked by high values in PC1 and Ti/Ca ratio, low values in PC2 and Sr/Fe ratio, and an increase in Zr/Fe ratio in coarser flood layers but no significant change in finer layers. Based on these fingerprints, 19 layers of typhoon and the same number of flood events were identified in core ZP02, which correspond well with documentary records. The establishment of tracing fingerprints for typhoon and flood event deposits provides methodological support for the identification and interpretation of various extreme event deposits.

With sea level rise (SLR), tidal nuisance flooding has become a growing threat, especially around estuaries with large tidal amplitudes. This study investigated how sea level change affects tides in Hangzhou Bay, a macro-tidal estuary with high SLR rate. By downscaling climate projections to a regional hydrodynamic model, the amplitude of primary tidal constituent (M2) was predicted to increase by 0.25 m in the upper bay, where the amplitude of major diurnal tide (K1) was also predicted to increase by 15%. In addition, the sensitivity of tidal amplitude to mean sea level was examined by a set of numerical simulations with different SLR. It was found that the increase of tidal amplitude is nonlinear to SLR, and the tidal amplitudes almost cease to increase when SLR is over 1.5 m. Although predictions show less amplitude changes in the lower bay, Zhoushan Archipelago around the bay mouth strongly modulates the incoming tidal energy, thus affecting the tidal amplitude in the upper bay. Energy budget analysis revealed that the complex topography, such as narrow channels, in the archipelago area leads to strong horizontal shear, which dissipates approximately 25% of total tidal energy in the bay. On the other hand, around 60% of the energy is dissipated in the bottom boundary layer. However, the bottom dissipation decreases by 4% due to reduced friction, while horizontal dissipation increases by 10% due to enhanced horizontal shear with SLR. This suggests that the strong horizontal shear in the Zhoushan archipelago region can play a more important role in the tidal energy budget in the future.

By extending synthetic aperture technology from the microwave band to the laser wavelength, Synthetic Aperture Ladar (SAL) has long-distance imaging and extremely high spatial resolution independent of the target distance. Presently, the small field of view is the key constraint in SAL ground observation because of the laser diffraction limitation. In this paper, an array SAL technology is proposed. With high-power array transmission, array-balanced detection, and pulse-wise dynamic internal calibration, a multichannel coherent laser transceiver is realized. Meanwhile, the field of view has multiplied. The results of turntable experiments show that the imaging resolution is better than 3 cm (distance) × 1 cm (azimuth). This technology provides a scientific and technical approach to SAL with wider swath imaging in ground observation.

The Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity is the essential component of an ultra-stable laser (USL) for gravitational wave detection, which couples multiple physics fields (optical/thermal/mechanical) and requires ultra-high precision. Aiming at the deficiency of the current single physical field optimization, a multi-physics and multi-objective optimization method for fixing the cubic FP cavity based on data learning is proposed in this paper. A multi-physics coupling model for the cubic FP cavity is established and the performance is obtained via finite element analysis. The key performance indices (V, wF, wF) and key design variables (d, l, F) are determined considering the features of the FP cavity. Different data learning models (NN, RSF, KRG) are established and compared based on 49 sets of data acquired by orthogonal experiments, with the results showing that the neural network has the best performance. NSGA-II is adopted as the optimization algorithm, the Pareto optimal front is obtained, and the optimal combination of design variables is finally determined as {5,32,250}. The performance after optimization proves to be greatly improved, with the displacement under the fixing force and vibration test both decreased by more than 60%. The proposed optimization strategy can help in the design of the FP cavity, and could enlighten other optimization fields as well.

In space gravitational wave detection, the inter-satellite link-building process requires a type of steering mirror to achieve point-ahead angle pointing. To verify that the background noise does not drown out the gravitational wave signal, this paper designed a laser heterodyne interferometer specifically designed to measure the optical path difference of the steering mirror. Theoretically, the impact of angle and position jitter is analyzed, which is called tilt-to-length (TTL) coupling. This interferometer is based on the design concept of equal-arm length. In a vacuum (10−3 Pa), vibration isolation (up to 1 Hz), and temperature-controlled (approximately 10 mK) experimental environment, the accuracy is increased by about four orders of magnitude through a common-mode suppression approach and can reach 390 pm/Hz when the frequency is between 1 mHz and 1 HZ. By analogy, the optical path difference caused by the steering mirror reaches 5 pm/Hz in the 1 mHz to 1 Hz frequency band. The proposed TTL noise model is subsequently verified.

Future GRACE-like geodesy missions could benefit from adopting accelerometer technology akin to that of the LISA Pathfinder, which employed laser interferometric readout at the sub-picometer level in addition to the conventional capacitive sensing, which is at best at the level of 100 pm. Improving accelerometer performance holds great potential to enhance the scientific output of forthcoming missions, carrying invaluable implications for research in climate, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction. To reach sub-picometer displacement sensing precision in the millihertz range, laser interferometers rely on suppression of laser-frequency noise by several orders of magnitude. Many optical frequency stabilization methods are available with varying levels of complexity, size, and performance. In this paper, we describe the performance of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer based on a compact monolithic optic. The setup consists of a commercial fiber injector, a custom-designed pentaprism used to split and recombine the laser beam, and two photoreceivers placed at the complementary output ports of the interferometer. The structural stability of the prism is transferred to the laser frequency via amplification, integration, and feedback of the balanced-detection signal, achieving a fractional frequency instability better than 6 parts in 1013, corresponding to an interferometer pathlength stability better than 1pm/Hz. The prism was designed to host a second interferometer to interrogate the position of a test mass. This optical scheme has been dubbed “single-element dual-interferometer” or SEDI.

Here, the authors show that enhanced tropical cyclone activity was synchronized with increased Asian dust emissions during the Little Ice Age, implying a mechanism linking tropical cyclone climatology to Asian dust levels, at 100 to 1000 year scales.

A new off-axis optical design alternative to that of the GRACE Follow-on mission for future NGGM missions is considered. In place of the triple-mirror assembly of the GRACE Follow-on mission, a laser retro-reflector is instead generated by means of lens systems. The receiving (RX) beam and transmitting (TX) beam are enforced to be anti-parallel by a control loop with differential wavefront sensing (DWS) signals as readout, and a fast-steering mirror is employed to actuate the pointing of the local beam. The tilt-to-length (TTL) coupling noise of the new off-axis optical bench layout is carefully studied in the present work. Local TTL originated from piston noise as well as assembly and alignment errors of optical components are studied. Effort is also made to have an in depth understanding of global TTL due to relative attitude jitter between spacecraft. The margin of TTL noise in the position noise budget for laser ranging is examined. With an open loop control of the offset between the reference point of the optical bench and the centre of mass of a satellite, the TTL noise of the new off-axis optical bench design may be suppressed efficiently.

The stream sediment (SS) records evolution information of the water system structure and sedimentary environment in specific regions during different geological periods, which is of great significance for studying the ancient planetary environment and the law of water system changes. Based on the SS of different geographical environments on Earth, remote laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (remote-LIBS) technology combined with the multidimensional scaling-back propagation neural network (MDS-BPNN) algorithm was used to conduct an in-depth analysis of remote qualitative and quantitative detection of the elemental composition and content of SS. The results show that the detection system based on remote LIBS combined with an artificial neural network algorithm can achieve an ideal quantitative analysis of major and trace elements. The coefficients of determination (R2) of the test set for major elements is greater than 0.9996, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is less than 0.7325. The coefficients of determination (R2) of the test set for trace elements is greater than 0.9837, and the root mean square error is less than 42.21. In addition, for the application scenario of exploring extraterrestrial life, biominerals represented by stromatolite phosphorite (SP) are easy to form sand and enter into SS under weathering. Therefore, this paper discusses the feasibility of using remote-LIBS technology to detect and identify such minerals under the disappearance of SPs’ macro- and micro-characteristics. From our research, we can find that remote-LIBS technology is the preferred candidate for discovering dust-covered biominerals. In geological environments rich in water system sedimentary rocks, such as Mars’ ancient riverbeds, LIBS technology is crucial for deciphering the “life signals” hidden in the Martian sand.

This paper evaluates the potential application of Raman baselines in characterizing organic deposition. Taking the layered sediments (Stromatolite) formed by the growth of early life on the Earth as the research object, Raman spectroscopy is an essential means to detect deep-space extraterrestrial life. Fluorescence is the main factor that interferes with Raman spectroscopy detection, which will cause the enhancement of the Raman baseline and annihilate Raman information. The paper aims to evaluate fluorescence contained in the Raman baseline and characterize organic sedimentary structure using the Raman baseline. This study achieves spectral image fusion combined with mapping technology to obtain high spatial and spectral resolution fusion images. To clarify that the fluorescence of organic matter deposition is the main factor causing Raman baseline enhancement, 5041 Raman spectra were obtained in the scanning area of 710 μm × 710 μm, and the correlation mechanism between the gray level of the light-dark layer of the detection point and the Raman baseline was compared. The spatial distribution of carbonate minerals and organic precipitations was detected by combining mapping technology. In addition, based on the BI-IHS algorithm, the spectral image fusion of Raman fluorescence mapping and reflection micrograph, polarization micrograph, and orthogonal polarization micrograph are realized, respectively. A fusion image with high spectral resolution and high spatial resolution is obtained. The results show that the Raman baseline can be used as helpful information to characterize stromatolite organic sedimentary structure.

The search for biominerals is one of the core targets in the deep space exploration mission. Stromatolite phosphorite is a typical biomineral that preserves early life on Earth. The enrichment of phosphate is closely related to microorganisms and their secretions. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become an essential payload in deep space exploration with the ability to analyze chemical elements remotely, rapidly, and in situ. This paper aims to evaluate the rapid identification of biological and non-biological minerals through a remote LIBS payload. LIBS is used for element analysis and mineral classification determination, and molecular laser-induced fluorescence (MLIF) is used to detect halogenated element F to support the existence of fluorapatite. This paper analyzes the LIBS-MLIF spectral characteristics of stromatolites and preliminarily evaluates the feasibility of P element quantification. The results show that LIBS technology can recognize biological and non-biological signals. This discovery is significant because it is not limited to detecting and analyzing element composition. It can also realize the detection of molecular spectrum based on selective extraction of CaF molecule. Therefore, the LIBS payload still has the potential to search for biomineral under the condition of adjusting the detection strategy.

Abstract Background New therapies are urgently needed for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Sodium oligomannate (GV-971) is a marine-derived oligosaccharide with a novel proposed mechanism of action. The first phase 3 clinical trial of GV-971 has been completed in China. Methods We conducted a phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in participants with mild-to-moderate AD to assess GV-971 efficacy and safety. Participants were randomized to placebo or GV-971 (900 mg) for 36 weeks. The primary outcome was the drug-placebo difference in change from baseline on the 12-item cognitive subscale of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-cog12). Secondary endpoints were drug-placebo differences on the Clinician’s Interview-Based Impression of Change with caregiver input (CIBIC+), Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL) scale, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Safety and tolerability were monitored. Results A total of 818 participants were randomized: 408 to GV-971 and 410 to placebo. A significant drug-placebo difference on the ADAS-Cog12 favoring GV-971 was present at each measurement time point, measurable at the week 4 visit and continuing throughout the trial. Natural processes and anthropogenic activities are vital in dictating the amount and character of organic carbon (OC) input into large river deltas and adjacent shelves. Previous studies have indicated that sediment from the Huanghe River (HR) has significantly affected the formation of the northern Yangtze River subaqueous delta (YRD) over the past several hundred years. However, whether this process has changed sedimentary OC burial in the YRD remains unclear. A sediment core was collected from the YRD in 2018 CE for optically stimulated luminescence and 210Pb dating as well as grain size, total OC, total nitrogen, and stable-isotope analyses to investigate temporal changes in sedimentary OC over the past 2000 years. The results indicate that changes in terrestrial OC inputs to the YRD have been controlled mainly by the East Asian summer monsoon and anthropogenic influences in the past 2000 years. However, the decreased terrestrial OC inputs after 1385 CE, have been significantly affected by increased contribution of HR sediment to the YRD when the HR lower courses shifted to enter the southern Yellow Sea. This study demonstrates that sediment source changes should not be neglected in analyses of mechanisms and variations in OC burial in estuarine and coastal areas.

Abstract Sensing of pathogenic nucleic acids by pattern recognition receptors (PRR) not only initiates anti-microbe defense but causes inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. E3 ubiquitin ligase(s) critical in innate response need to be further identified. Here we report that the tripartite motif-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase TRIM41 is required to innate antiviral response through facilitating pathogenic nucleic acids-triggered signaling pathway. TRIM41 deficiency impairs the production of inflammatory cytokines and type I interferons in macrophages after transfection with nucleic acid-mimics and infection with both DNA and RNA viruses. In vivo, TRIM41 deficiency leads to impaired innate response against viruses. Mechanistically, TRIM41 directly interacts with BCL10 (B cell lymphoma 10), a core component of CARD proteins−BCL10 − MALT1 (CBM) complex, and modifies the Lys63-linked polyubiquitylation of BCL10, which, in turn, hubs NEMO for activation of NF-κB and TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) − interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) pathways. Our study suggests that TRIM41 is the potential universal E3 ubiquitin ligase responsible for Lys63 linkage of BCL10 during innate antiviral response, adding new insight into the molecular mechanism for the control of innate antiviral response.

A spaceborne mounting method for fixing a 100 × 100 × 100 mm cubic Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity is presented. The method constrains the FP cavity in eight directions with a titanium bracket, PEEK gaskets, and vacuum glue. Three criteria were proposed for judging whether the FP cavity is offset or not during aerospace vibration tests. Results indicate that the proposed method is a reliable, robust, and stable way to fix a cubic FP cavity in ultra-stable lasers (USLs). This approach paves the way for the use of USLs in space.

The optical reference cavity in an ultrastable laser is sensitive to vibrations; the microvibrations in a space platform affect the accuracy and stability of such lasers. In this study, an active vibration isolation controller is proposed to reduce the effect of vibrations on variations in the cavity length and improve the frequency stability of ultrastable lasers. Based on the decentralized control strategy, we designed a state-differential feedback controller with a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and added a disturbance observer (DOB) to estimate the source noise. Experiments were conducted using an active vibration isolation system; the results verified the feasibility and performance of the designed controller. The accelerations along the axis (Z-, X-, Y-) directions were suppressed in the low-frequency band within 200 Hz, and the root-cumulative power spectral densities (PSDs) declined to 1.17 × 10−5, 7.16 × 10−6, and 8.76 × 10−6 g. This comprehensive vibration met the requirements of an ultrastable laser.

Abstract Background Approximately 80% of adolescent scoliosis cases are idiopathic, and some non-idiopathic scoliosis cases caused by spinal cord abnormalities are misdiagnosed as idiopathic scoliosis. This study examined the risk factors for non-idiopathic scoliosis with intramedullary abnormalities, explored the feasibility of whole-spine MRI, and provided a theoretical basis for the routine diagnosis and treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Method The clinical data of adolescent scoliosis patients who were admitted to Shanghai Tongren Hospital and Shanghai Changhai Hospital between July 1, 2013, and December 31, 2018, were reviewed. According to the whole-spine MRI results, the patients were divided into either the idiopathic group or the intramedullary abnormality group. Sex, age, main curvature angle, main curvature direction, kyphosis angle, scoliosis type, coronal plane balance, sagittal plane balance, abdominal wall reflex, sensory abnormality, ankle clonus and tendon reflexes were compared between the two groups. Student’s t test was used to evaluate the differences in the continuous variables, and the chi-square test was used to evaluate the differences in the categorical variables. Fisher’s exact test was applied to detect the difference in the rate of intraspinal anomalies between the groups. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the correlation between the multivariate risk factors and intramedullary abnormalities. Result A total of 714 adolescent scoliosis patients with a mean age of 13.5 (10–18 years) were included in the study, and intramedullary abnormalities were found in 68 (9.5%) patients. There were statistically significant differences in the incidence rates of intramedullary abnormalities between males and females, left and right thoracic curvatures, angular scoliosis and smooth scoliosis, and abnormal abdominal wall reflex and ankle clonus (P

The southern coast of Hainan Island, China, is one of the most frequently hit areas of tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific regions. Although some of the extreme typhoon events were known in historical times, quantitative information on the timing and magnitude of paleo-typhoon events in this coastal area remains rare. In the present study, a large number of coral reef boulders were found on the Xiaodonghai reef platform, on the south coast of Hainan Island. Morphometric analysis of the boulders shows an exponentially fining landward trend, indicating a storm origin; a wave-induced current velocity of 2.41–5.71 m/s during the storm events is required to transport the boulders that were originally situated outside the reef edge. Based on the U/Th and 14C dating for the age-indicating samples taken from the boulders, seven major periods with intense typhoon activities were identified for the last 4,000 years, i.e., 1800–1500 BCE, 1200–900 BCE, 50–120 CE, 550–800 CE, 900–1000 CE, 1350–1900 CE, and 1910–2000 CE. A comparison with the regional typhoon records in terms of climatic parameters in the northwestern Pacific and the South China Sea regions indicates that the longitudinal variations of intense typhoon frequency were mainly controlled by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), dominantly modulated by the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Because of the future warming climate, there will be a trend of enhanced typhoon risk for the southern Hainan Island coasts.

Humans have been sailing across seas and oceans for thousands of years. However, the story of large ships capable of affecting coastal ecology and shelf sedimentary processes is only about 100 years old. Modern large seagoing vessels with a draft of 10–20 m can cause resuspension of seabed sediment, erosion of the channel slope and shoal, enhancement of seafloor sediment activity and thickening of the active layer, thereby having a significant impact on seabed topography and sedimentation processes. However, little is known about the effects of this anthropogenic agent on shelf sedimentation due to limited observational data. Here, two sediment cores were collected from a shipping lane used by vessels of 5,000- to 50,000-ton off the coast of China to analyze their sedimentary properties, with focus on both the grain size and elements. It was found that ship disturbance selectively modified the sedimentary record, with the fine-grained sediment becoming increasingly unstable. In addition, there was a reduction in grain size of sediment finer than 6.25 Φ, which decreased by 11% after the disturbance by ship. Biogenic elements that were closely related to the ecological environment were significantly altered, with Br/Cl, Si/Ti, and Ca/Ti ratios all becoming significantly smaller. This indicated that frequent disturbance caused by ships had reduced the productivity in the waters near the shipping lane. In terms of sensitivity to the effects of ship navigation, the sedimentation response was relatively rapid and began to emerge from the commencement of ship navigation, whereas the ecological response became evident later than the sedimentation response and only appeared after a significant growth in the maritime transportation of China. Following the comparison of the two sediment cores, we propose that the constant rate of supply (CRS- with ship disturbance)–constant initial concentration (CIC- without ship disturbance) dual dating model be used to establish a dating framework in waters frequently disturbed by ship. This type of anthropogenic sedimentary dynamic process and its sedimentary–ecological effects deserve attention on this era where there is a surge in shipping globally. Shipping lanes present an excellent area for quantitative studies on the impacts of human activity and defining the Anthropocene in the context of shipping.

In this study, an active microvibration isolation system is developed for precision space payload. Vibrational environment affects the performance and reliability of measuring instruments. To improve the measurement accuracy of the precision space payload, an active vibration isolation system based on eight vibration isolation modules, which are applied for microvibration isolation on the satellite, is designed. A vibration suppression control strategy for multiple degrees of freedom is studied. A hybrid control method involving a feedback and a feedforward controller based on a nonlinear tracking differentiator and an nth-order weak integrator, respectively, was adopted to optimize the suppression effect of microvibration. As a result, the microvibration of the order of mg can be reduced to the order of μg through the active control of modules. Research experiment results show that the root cumulative power spectral density of the systemic sensitive frequency band in the range of 0.5–200 Hz, i.e., microvibration frequency band in the optical reference cavity, has been reduced to in the order of μg in three directions, which satisfied the requirements of aerospace engineering.

The laser ranging interferometer onboard the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On mission proved the feasibility of an interferometric sensor for inter-satellite length tracking with sub-nanometer precision, establishing an important milestone for space laser interferometry and the general expectation that future gravity missions will employ heterodyne laser interferometry for satellite-to-satellite ranging. In this paper, we present the design of an on-axis optical bench for next-generation laser ranging which enhances the received optical power and the transmit beam divergence, enabling longer interferometer arms and relaxing the optical power requirement of the laser assembly. All design functionalities and requirements are verified by means of computer simulations. A thermal analysis is carried out to investigate the robustness of the proposed optical bench to the temperature fluctuations found in orbit.

To guarantee a smooth in-orbit space gravitational wave detection for the Taiji mission, a semi-physical simulation test of inter-satellite laser interference is carried out. The semi-physical simulation test consists of three aspects: the establishment of the inter-satellite laser link, interferometry of the inter-satellite ranging, and simulation of the space environment. With the designed specifications for the semi-physical simulation platform, the test results for the inter-satellite laser interference can be obtained. Based on the semi-physical simulation test, the risks of inter-satellite laser interference technology can be mitigated, laying a solid foundation for the successful detection of in-orbit gravitational waves.

Tracking moving masses in several degrees of freedom with high precision and large dynamic range is a central aspect in many current and future gravitational physics experiments. Laser interferometers have been established as one of the tools of choice for such measurement schemes. Using sinusoidal phase modulation homodyne interferometry allows a drastic reduction of the complexity of the optical setup, a key limitation of multi-channel interferometry. By shifting the complexity of the setup to the signal processing stage, these methods enable devices with a size and weight not feasible using conventional techniques. In this paper we present the design of a novel sensor topology based on deep frequency modulation interferometry: the self-referenced single-element dual-interferometer (SEDI) inertial sensor, which takes simplification one step further by accommodating two interferometers in one optic. Using a combination of computer models and analytical methods we show that an inertial sensor with sub-picometer precision for frequencies above 10 mHz, in a package of a few cubic inches, seems feasible with our approach. Moreover we show that by combining two of these devices it is possible to reach sub-picometer precision down to 2 mHz. In combination with the given compactness, this makes the SEDI sensor a promising approach for applications in high precision inertial sensing for both next-generation space-based gravity missions employing drag-free control, and ground-based experiments employing inertial isolation systems with optical readout.

Object-location memory is particularly fragile and specifically impaired in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was utilized to objectively measure memory impairment for memory formation correlates of EEG oscillatory activities. We aimed to construct an object-location memory paradigm and explore EEG signs of it. Two groups of 20 probable mild AD patients and 19 healthy older adults were included in a cross-sectional analysis. All subjects took an object-location memory task. EEG recordings performed during object-location memory tasks were compared between the two groups in the two EEG parameters (spectral parameters and phase synchronization). The memory performance of AD patients was worse than that of healthy elderly adults The power of object-location memory of the AD group was significantly higher than the NC group (healthy elderly adults) in the alpha band in the encoding session, and alpha and theta bands in the retrieval session. The channels-pairs the phase lag index value of object-location memory in the AD group was clearly higher than the NC group in the delta, theta, and alpha bands in encoding sessions and delta and theta bands in retrieval sessions. The results provide support for the hypothesis that the AD patients may use compensation mechanisms to remember the items and episode.

Objective. To investigate the utility of AD8 for cognitive impairment in a Chinese physical examination population. Methods. Military cadres who took routine physical examination in Chinese PLA General Hospital from Jan 1, 2013, to Dec 31, 2013, were subjected to AD8 scale. Individual information such as age, gender, and education was also collected. All data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0. Results. 1544 subjects were enrolled in this study with mean age 75.4 ± 10.6 years. The subjects who scored 0 to 8 of AD8 scale were 1015, 269, 120, 60, 30, 14, 19, 8, and 9, respectively. Corresponding proportions were 65.7%, 17.4%, 7.8%, 3.9%, 2.0%, 0.9%, 1.2%, 0.5%, and 0.6%, respectively. The gravitational wave spacecraft is a complex multi-input multi-output dynamic system. The gravitational wave detection mission requires the spacecraft to achieve single spacecraft with two laser links and high-precision control. Establishing one spacecraftwith two laser links, compared to one spacecraft with a single laser link, requires an upgraded decoupling algorithmfor the link establishment. The decoupling algorithmwe designed reassigns the degrees of freedomand forces in the control loop to ensure sufficient degrees of freedomfor optical axis control. In addressing the distinct dynamic characteristics of different degrees of freedom, a transfer function compensation method is used in the decoupling process to furtherminimizemotion coupling. The open-loop frequency response of the systemis obtained through simulation. The upgraded decoupling algorithms effectively reduce the open-loop frequency response by 30 dB. To achieve the standardization and normalization of its clinical practice and generate individualized intervention, the National Core Cognitive Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, the Cognitive Disorders Branch of Chinese Geriatic Society, the Dementia Group of Neurology Branch of Guangdong Medical Association and specialists from Hong Kong and Macao developed guidelines based on China's actual conditions and efficiency, economic cost and accuracy.
