Abstract Purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) like Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) from OpenAI and LLaMA (Large Language Model Meta AI) from Meta AI are increasingly recognized for their potential in the field of cheminformatics, particularly in understanding Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System (SMILES), a standard method for representing chemical structures. These LLMs also have the ability to decode SMILES strings into vector representations. Method We investigate the performance of GPT and LLaMA compared to pre-trained models on SMILES in embedding SMILES strings on downstream tasks, focusing on two key applications: molecular property prediction and drug-drug interaction prediction. Results We find that SMILES embeddings generated using LLaMA outperform those from GPT in both molecular property and DDI prediction tasks. Notably, LLaMA-based SMILES embeddings show results comparable to pre-trained models on SMILES in molecular prediction tasks and outperform the pre-trained models for the DDI prediction tasks. Conclusion The performance of LLMs in generating SMILES embeddings shows great potential for further investigation of these models for molecular embedding. We hope our study bridges the gap between LLMs and molecular embedding, motivating additional research into the potential of LLMs in the molecular representation field. Abstract Conductive‐bridge random access memory (CBRAM) emerges as a promising candidate for next‐generation memory and storage device. However, CBRAMs are prone to degenerate and fail during electrochemical metallization processes. To address this issue, herein we propose a self‐repairability strategy for CBRAMs. Amorphous NbSe2 was designed as the resistive switching layer, with Cu and Au as the top and bottom electrodes, respectively. The NbSe2 CBRAMs demonstrate exceptional cycle‐to‐cycle and device‐to‐device uniformity, with forming‐free and compliance current‐free resistive switching characteristics, low‐operation voltage, and competitive endurance and retention performance. Most importantly, the self‐repairable behavior is discovered for the first time in CBRAM. The device after failure can recover its performance to the initially normal state by operating with a slightly large reset voltage. The existence of Cu conductive filament and excellent controllability of Cu migration in the NbSe2 switching layer has been revealed by a designed broken‐down point approach, which is responsible for the self‐repairable behavior of NbSe2 CBRAMs. Our self‐repairable and high‐uniform amorphous NbSe2 CBRAM may open the door to the development of memory and storage devices in the future.

Abstract Li–CO2/O2 batteries, a promising energy storage technology, not only provide ultrahigh discharge capacity but also capture CO2 and turn it into renewable energy. Their electrochemical reaction pathways' ambiguity, however, creates a hurdle for their practical application. This study used copper selenide (CuSe) nanosheets as the air cathode medium in an environmental transmission electron microscope to in situ study Li–CO2/O2 (mix CO2 as well as O2 at a volume ratio of 1:1) and Li–O2 batteries as well as Li–CO2 batteries. Primary discharge reactions take place successively in the Li–CO2/O2–CuSe nanobattery: (I) 4Li+ + O2 + 4e− → 2Li2O; (II) Li2O + CO2 → Li2CO3. The charge reaction proceeded via (III) 2Li2CO3 → 4Li+ + 2CO2 + O2 + 4e−. However, Li–O2 and Li–CO2 nanobatteries showed poor cycling stability, suggesting the difficulty in the direct decomposition of the discharge product. The fluctuations of the Li–CO2/O2 battery's electrochemistry were also shown to depend heavily on O2. The CuSe‐based Li–CO2/O2 battery showed exceptional electrochemical performance. The Li–CO2/O2 battery offered a discharge capacity apex of 15,492 mAh g−1 and stable cycling 60 times at 100 mA g−1. Our research offers crucial insight into the electrochemical behavior of Li–CO2/O2, Li–O2, and Li–CO2 nanobatteries, which may help the creation of high‐performance Li–CO2/O2 batteries for energy storage applications.

As a special heterogeneous geological material, soil-rock mixtures are widely distributed in nature and used in civil engineering. Heat flow is one of the most significant factors affecting the development of water balance and redistribution, ground temperature evolution, and heat transport processes in cold regions. This study explores the heat flow characteristics and generalized thermal resistance model for soil-rock mixtures during freezing-thawing processes. A series of freezing-thawing experiments for soil-rock mixtures with different rock contents (i.e., 10%, 25%, and 40%) were conducted. The effects of rock content and water–ice phase transition on heat flux during the freezing-thawing processes were analyzed, and the damping properties of heat flow for soil-rock mixtures during freeze–thaw cycles were found and illustrated. Subsequently, a generalized thermal resistance model for soil-rock mixtures was proposed and discussed. The results show that the freezing-thawing processes and rock content significantly influence the heat flux and soil temperature of the soil-rock mixtures. Regardless of rock content, the sums of heat flux in freezing and thawing stages all firstly decreased, and then gradually tends to be stable with freeze–thaw cycles. Besides, the reduction of volumetric unfrozen water content increases with the freeze–thaw cycles, and the amplitude of unfrozen water reduction for sample with high rock content is larger than that with low rock content. Additionally, owing to the effect of the latent heat released by water/ice phase transition and thermal sensitive property of rock, the variation of heat flow for soil-rock mixtures presents damping property in the stages without completely freezing, and the variation of heat flow exhibits reversed damping property in the post-freezing stages due to the denser structure and ice crystal growth. Furthermore, based on the thermal resistance in series, characteristics of water–ice phase transition, and thermal sensitive property of rocks, a new generalized thermal resistance model of soil-rock mixtures during freezing-thawing processes is proposed.

Abstract Amorphous NbS2 was proposed as the resistive switching (RS) layer for conductive‐bridge random access memory (CBRAM) for the first time, with Cu and Au as the top and bottom electrodes, respectively. NbS2 films were prepared at room temperature, which exhibited an amorphous structure and did not crystalize even annealed at 500°C, showing good thermal stability. The amorphous NbS2 CBRAM devices present stable bipolar non‐volatile RS characteristics. Repetitive RS behavior is demonstrated in amorphous NbS2 CBRAMs. The operating voltage during all RS cycles is less than 1 V, demonstrating that the NbS2 CBRAM is a low‐operation voltage memory device. The distribution of the high and low resistive state resistance is relatively concentrated, and the on‐off ratio has been kept above 100, offering a sufficient data read/write window. The formation and fracture of the Cu metal conductive filament is considered to be the RS mechanism by analyzing the dependence of current and voltage in logarithmic coordinates. Our study demonstrated that amorphous NbS2 is a promising material for low‐operation voltage CBRAM.

Abstract Objective The purpose of our study was to perform a meta-analysis and systematic review to compare differences in clinical manifestations and chest computed tomography (CT) findings between immunocompetent and immunocompromised pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) patients. Methods An extensive search for relevant studies was performed using the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Sciences databases from inception to September 30, 2021. We included studies that compared the clinical manifestations and chest CT findings between immunocompetent and immunocompromised PC patients. Study bias and quality assessment were performed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results Nine studies involving 248 immunocompromised and 276 immunocompetent PC patients were included in our analysis. The NOS score of each eligible study was above 5, indicating moderate bias. The proportion of elderly patients (> = 60 years old) in the immunosuppressed group was significantly higher than that in the immunocompetent group (OR = 2.90, 95% CI (1.31–6.43), Z = 2.63, p = 0.01). To explore the natural resources as sustainable precursors offers a family of green materials. The use of bio-waste precursors especially the remaining from food processing is a scalable, highly abundant, and cost-effective strategy. Exploring waste materials is highly important especially for new materials discovery in emerging energy storage technologies such as lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, waste milk powder is carbonized and constructed as the sulfur host with the hollow micro-/mesoporous framework, and the resulting carbonized milk powder and sulfur (CMP/S) composites are employed as cathodes for LSBs. It is revealed that the hollow micro-/mesoporous CMP/S framework can not only accommodate the volume expansion but also endow smooth pathways for the fast diffusion of electrons and Li-ions, leading to both high capacity and long cycling stability. The CMP/S composite electrode with 56 wt% loaded sulfur exhibits a remarkable initial capacity of 1596 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, corresponding to 95% of the theoretical capacity. Even at a rate of 1 C, it maintains a high capacity of 730 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 72.6% after 500 cycles, demonstrating a very low capacity fading of only 0.05% per cycle. Importantly, the Coulombic efficiency is always higher than 96% during all the cycles. The only used source material is expired waste milk powders in our proposal. We believe that this “trash to treasure” approach will open up a new way for the utilization of waste material as environmentally safe and high performance electrodes for advanced LSBs.

Abstract Background The yellow catfish, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, is a commercially important fish species. It is widely distributed in the fresh water areas of China, including rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Like many other aquaculture fish species, people have observed significant size dimorphism between male and female yellow catfish and it shows a growth advantage in males. Results Here, at the first time, the time-course transcriptome was used to explore the various expression profiles of genes in different gonad developmental stages and genders. A total of 2696 different expression genes (DEGs) were identified from different stages. Based on these DEGs, 13 gonad development related genes were identified which showed time-specific or sex biased expression patterns. Conclusion This study will provide the crucial information on the molecular mechanism of gonad development of female and male yellow catfish. Especially, during the different gonad development stages, these 13 gonad development related genes exhibit various expression patterns in female and male individual respectively. These results could inspire and facilitate us to understanding the various roles of these genes play in different gonad development stages and genders.

BackgroundAlthough hepatectomy plus splenectomy is not regularly recommended for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal hypertension related hypersplenism due to the high risk accompanied with surgical procedures for now. Many researchers still believe that hypersplenism is a controversial adverse prognostic factor for HCC patients. Thus, the primary objective of the study was to determine the effects of hypersplenism on the prognosis of these patients during and after hepatectomy.MethodsA total of 335 patients with HBV-related HCC who underwent surgical resection as primary intervention were included in this study and categorized into three groups. Group A consisted of 226 patients without hypersplenism, Group B included 77 patients with mild hypersplenism, and Group C contained 32 patients with severe hypersplenism. The influence of hypersplenism on the outcome during the perioperative and long-term follow-up periods was analyzed. The independent factors were identified using the Cox proportional hazards regression model.ResultsThe presence of hypersplenism is associated with longer hospital stays, more postoperative blood transfusions, and higher complication rates. The overall survival (OS, P = 0.020) and disease-free survival (DFS, P = 0.005) were significantly decreased in Group B compared to those in Group A. Additionally, the OS (P = 0.014) and DFS (P = 0.005) were reduced in Group C compared to those in Group B. Severe hypersplenism was a significant independent prognostic variable for both OS and DFS.ConclusionSevere hypersplenism prolonged the hospital stay, increased the rate of postoperative blood transfusion, and elevated the incidence of complications. Furthermore, hypersplenism predicted lower overall and disease-free survivals.

Abstract Background Deep-sea mussels living in the cold seeps with enormous biomass act as the primary consumers. They are well adapted to the extreme environment where light is absent, and hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluid seepage occur. Despite previous studies on diversity, role, evolution, and symbiosis, the changing adaptation patterns during different developmental stages of the deep-sea mussels remain largely unknown. Results The deep-sea mussels (Bathymodiolus platifrons) of two developmental stages were collected from the cold seep during the ocean voyage. The gills, mantles, and adductor muscles of these mussels were used for the Illumina sequencing. A total of 135 Gb data were obtained, and subsequently, 46,376 unigenes were generated using de-novo assembly strategy. According to the gene expression analysis, amounts of genes were most actively expressed in the gills, especially genes involved in environmental information processing. Genes encoding Toll-like receptors and sulfate transporters were up-regulated in gills, indicating that the gill acts as both intermedium and protective screen in the deep-sea mussel. Lysosomal enzymes and solute carrier responsible for nutrients absorption were up-regulated in the older mussel, while genes related to toxin resistance and autophagy were up-regulated in the younger one, suggesting that the older mussel might be in a vigorous stage while the younger mussel was still paying efforts in survival and adaptation. Conclusions In general, our study suggested that the adaptation capacity might be formed gradually during the development of deep-sea mussels, in which the gill and the symbionts play essential roles.

The exploration of the hydro-thermal characteristics and deformation behaviors of cement-stabilized soils is important for the prevention and control of freeze–thaw damage in cold region engineering. This study used six groups of cement-stabilized soil samples with different cement contents (i.e., 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, 15%, and 18%) to investigate the variations in soil temperature, volumetric unfrozen water content, deformation, freezing temperature, and dry density. The results showed that the temperatures of the cement-stabilized soil samples during the freezing and thawing processes can be categorized into three stages and that the freezing temperature decreased with increasing cement content. Moreover, the cement content and ambient temperature significantly affected the volumetric unfrozen water content of the cement-stabilized soil samples during the freeze–thaw cycles, and the soil temperatures corresponding to the peak hysteresis degree were relatively consistent with the freezing temperature. The residual volumetric unfrozen water content primarily depended not only on the cement content but also on the freezing condition. Although the variations in volumetric unfrozen water contents during the freezing and thawing processes were similar, the ranges in temperature change differed significantly, particularly in the drastic phase transition zone. Additionally, adding cement into soils effectively inhibited deformation, mainly due to the dual positive effects of the liquid water reduction owing to hydration reaction and structure compaction owing to the filling of hydration products.

Abstract Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) can work at high temperatures, but they suffer from poor cycle life stability due to the “shuttle effect” of polysulfides. In this study, pollen‐derived porous carbon/cuprous phosphide (PC/Cu3P) hybrids were rationally synthesized using a one‐step carbonization method using pollen as the source material, acting as the sulfur host for LSBs. In the hybrid, polar Cu3P can markedly inhibit the “shuttle effect” by regulating the adsorption ability toward polysulfides, as confirmed by theoretical calculations and experimental tests. As an example, the camellia pollen porous carbon (CPC)/Cu3P/S electrode shows a high capacity of 1205.6 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, an ultralow capacity decay rate of 0.038% per cycle after 1000 cycles at 1 C, and a rather high initial Coulombic efficiency of 98.5%. The CPC/Cu3P LSBs can work well at high temperatures, having a high capacity of 545.9 mAh g−1 at 1 C even at 150°C. The strategy of the PC/Cu3P hybrid proposed in this study is expected to be an ideal cathode for ultrastable high‐temperature LSBs. We believe that this strategy is universal and worthy of in‐depth development for the next generation energy storage devices.

The swelling deformation of expansive soil after immersion often lead to engineering disasters. In this paper, the experiments on the swelling properties of expansive soil in Hefei after microwave heating have been carried out. The results show that, the soil samples change from fine particles to coarse particles after microwave heating. With the increase of microwave heating time, the specific gravity of soil samples first increases and then decreases, while the liquid and plastic limit continue to decrease. In addition, microwave heating significantly affects the swelling behaviors of soil samples. With the increase of microwave heating time, both the free swelling ratio and vertical free swelling strain decrease. In the process of microwave heating, there are a series of physical and chemical changes in expansive soil, such as the water escaping from the interlayer structure of clay minerals, the transformation and decomposition of material components, which significantly changes the physical and mechanical properties of expansive soil.

Drug repurposing is the process of discovering new indications (i.e., diseases or conditions) for already approved drugs. Many computational methods have been proposed for predicting new associations between drugs and diseases. In this article, we proposed a new method, called DR-HGNN, an integrative heterogeneous graph neural network-based method for multi-labeled drug repurposing, to discover new indications for existing drugs. For this purpose, we first used the DTINet dataset to construct a heterogeneous drug–protein–disease (DPD) network, which is a graph composed of four types of nodes (drugs, proteins, diseases, and drug side effects) and eight types of edges. Second, we labeled each drug–protein edge, dpi,j = (di, pj), of the DPD network with a set of diseases, {δi,j,1, … , δi,j,k} associated with both di and pj and then devised multi-label ranking approaches which incorporate neural network architecture that operates on the heterogeneous graph-structured data and which leverages both the interaction patterns and the features of drug and protein nodes. We used a derivative of the GraphSAGE algorithm, HinSAGE, on the heterogeneous DPD network to learn low-dimensional vector representation of features of drugs and proteins. Finally, we used the drug–protein network to learn the embeddings of the drug–protein edges and then predict the disease labels that act as bridges between drugs and proteins. The proposed method shows better results than existing methods applied to the DTINet dataset, with an AUC of 0.964.

Abstract Background To evaluate the efficacy and safety of recombinant human serum albumin /granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rHSA/G-CSF) in breast cancer following receipt of cytotoxic agents. Methods The phase 1b trial assessed the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety of dose-escalation, ranging from rHSA/G-CSF 1800 μg, 2100 μg, and 2400 μg. Randomized controlled phase 2b trial was further conducted to ensure the comparative efficacy and safety of rHSA/G-CSF 2400 μg and rhG-CSF 5 μg/kg. In multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel, phase 2 study, participants treated with anthracycline-containing chemotherapy were assigned in a ratio 1:1:1 to receive double delivery of rHSA/G-CSF 1200 μg, 1500 μg, and continuous rhG-CSF 5 μg/kg. Results Between December 16, 2014, to July 23, 2018, a total of 320 patients were enrolled, including 25 individuals in phase 1b trial, 80 patients in phase 2b trial, and 215 participants in phase 2 study. The mean duration of agranulocytosis during the first chemotherapeutic intermission was observed as 1.14 ± 1.35 days in rHSA/G-CSF 1500 μg, which was comparable with that of 1.07 ± 0.97 days obtained in rhG-CSF control (P = 0.71). Safety profiles were assessed to be acceptable ranging from rHSA/G-CSF 1800 μg to 2400 μg, while the double delivery of HSA/G-CSF 2400 μg failed to meet the noninferiority in comparison with rhG-CSF. Conclusion The prospective randomized controlled trials demonstrated that rHSA/G-CSF was efficacious and well-tolerated with an approachable frequency and expense of application for prophylactic management of agranulocytosis. The double delivery of rHSA/G-CSF 1500 μg in comparisons with paralleling G-CSF preparations is warranted in the phase 3 trial. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a crucial role in the progression of liver fibrosis, which can be considered as the specific therapeutic target of anti-fibrotic treatment. Targeted induction of HSCs to hepatocytes via delivery of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (dCas9) system holds promise for hepatic fibrosis treatment. Our study here revealed that CRISPR/dCas9-VP64 system encapsulated in AML12 cell-derived exosomes could efficiently and successfully be delivered into the HSCs. In turn, the CRISPR/dCas9-VP64 system loaded in the exosomes can be efficiently released into the HSCs. As a proof-of-concept study, gRNA against hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α) together with the delivery of CRISPR/dCas9-VP64 system induced the HSCs to hepatocyte-like phenotype. In conclusion, our study here revealed that CRISPR/dCas9-VP64 system encapsulated in AML12 cell-derived exosomes could be functional in HSCs, emerging as a gene therapy strategy for hepatic fibrosis.

Material defects and external environmental factors increase the engineering safety risks of buried PE pipelines in service. This paper mainly reviews the failure mode and the prevention and control technology of buried PE pipelines in service, as well as comparative failure characteristics between the buried PE and steel pipelines. The main failure factors of buried PE pipelines can be divided into four levels: the first level is third-party damage; the second level includes three failure factors, i.e., surface subsidence, joint failure, and aging failure; the third level consists of pipe piercing, crack development, and pipeline defect; the fourth level is a corrosion failure. Besides, steel and PE pipelines have various physical and mechanical properties, which lead to a significant difference in the service performance and degradation mechanism in practice. For instance, corrosion and welded joint leakage are the two common problems in steel pipelines during the service period, while PE pipelines have excellent corrosion resistance. Additionally, in order to ensure and maintain the long-term operations of PE pipelines, it is of great significance to develop and promote nonexcavation technologies of construction, renewal, and repair for natural gas-buried PE pipelines. Furthermore, based on the above studies, some further research studies on buried PE pipelines in service are suggested and discussed, e.g., (a) the service performance and degradation mechanism of buried PE pipelines in complicated environmental conditions, (b) the interaction mechanism among the engineering structure, PE pipelines, and geological environment, as well as PE pipeline geological soils coupled in multiple physical fields, and (c) the combinations of the traditional engineering risk assessment method and the numerical analysis method considering the interaction between the PE pipeline and geological environment. The results could be helpful for a better understanding of the operation conditions of buried PE pipelines, and it is also hoped that this study could provide guidance for the safe operation, maintenance, and integrity management of buried PE pipelines.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been investigated as a promising methodology to harvest mechanical energy into electricity. The matching impedance and the transient property of TENGs are important for their practical application. In this work, we proposed novel paper-based methodology for investigation of TENGs. First, we propose a novel method for triggering transience of pencil-on-paper (POP)-TENGs using household microwave oven and commercial graphite pencil. Moreover, a fast, simple and cost-effective approach for measuring the matching impedance of TENG based on paper variable resistor is proposed. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a gram-positive, nonpathogenic, endospore-forming, member of a group of free-living soil bacteria with a variety of traits including plant growth promotion, production of antifungal and antibacterial metabolites, and production of industrially important enzymes. We have attempted to reconstruct the biogeographical structure according to functional traits and the evolutionary lineage of B. amyloliquefaciens using comparative genomics analysis. All the available 96 genomes of B. amyloliquefaciens strains were curated from the NCBI genome database, having a variety of important functionalities in all sectors keeping a high focus on agricultural aspects. In-depth analysis was carried out to deduce the orthologous gene groups and whole-genome similarity. Pan genome analysis revealed that shell genes, soft core genes, core genes, and cloud genes comprise 17.09, 5.48, 8.96, and 68.47%, respectively, which demonstrates that genomes are very different in the gene content. It also indicates that the strains may have flexible environmental adaptability or versatile functions. Phylogenetic analysis showed that B. amyloliquefaciens is divided into two clades, and clade 2 is further dived into two different clusters. This reflects the difference in the sequence similarity and diversification that happened in the B. amyloliquefaciens genome. The majority of plant-associated strains of B. amyloliquefaciens were grouped in clade 2 (73 strains), while food-associated strains were in clade 1 (23 strains). Genome mining has been adopted to deduce antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes and their prevalence among all strains. The genes tmrB and yuaB codes for tunicamycin resistance protein and hydrophobic coat forming protein only exist in clade 2, while clpP, which codes for serine proteases, is only in clade 1. Genome plasticity of all strains of B. amyloliquefaciens reflects their adaption to different niches.

The exploration of the deep-sea sedimentary microbial communities could reveal the diversity, composition, as well as biogeochemical relationships. The West Philippine Basin, the world’s largest marginal basin plate which surrounded by subduction boundaries, has special location and geological significance, while few studies investigated deep-sea sedimentary microbial community especially functional groups and genes involved in N transformation in this area till now. Here, the combination of microbial community composition through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, N transformation functional genes quantification, and geochemical analysis were jointly employed, aiming to explore the vertical distributions of microbial community and N-transforming microorganisms in an intact sediment core (400 cm depth) from the West Philippine Basin (15.32 °N, 133.23 °E, water depth 4941.9 m). The results showed that phyla Proteobacteria and Thaumarchaeota had higher relative abundances in the surface sediments (0–5 cm), while the relative abundance of phylum Firmicutes increased with depth and became dominant in the deeper sediments (350–400 cm). Based on the sequencing and quantification results, the overall abundances of inferred N-cycling taxa and functional genes decreased with depth, and the archaeal ammonia oxidation and denitrification were the dominant N transformation processes in the surface and below the surface (5–400 cm) sediments, respectively. Depth and organic matter were the key environmental variables driving the microbial community structure and N transformation processes in deep-sea sediments. This study could potentially improve the consensus that N-cycling processes in deep-sea sediments are linked and complicated, which could aid to illuminate the understanding of the role of deep-sea microbes in N cycles.

Abstract An integrated system has been provided with a-Si/H solar cells as energy conversion device, NiCo2O4 battery-supercapacitor hybrid (BSH) as energy storage device, and light emitting diodes (LEDs) as energy utilization device. By designing three-dimensional hierarchical NiCo2O4 arrays as faradic electrode, with capacitive electrode of active carbon (AC), BSHs were assembled with energy density of 16.6 Wh kg–1, power density of 7285 W kg–1, long-term stability with 100% retention after 15,000 cycles, and rather low self-discharge. The NiCo2O4//AC BSH was charged to 1.6 V in 1 s by solar cells and acted as reliable sources for powering LEDs. The integrated system is rational for operation, having an overall efficiency of 8.1% with storage efficiency of 74.24%. The integrated system demonstrates a stable solar power conversion, outstanding energy storage behavior, and reliable light emitting. Our study offers a precious strategy to design a self-driven integrated system for highly efficient energy utilization.

The aim of Medical Knowledge Graph Completion is to automatically predict one of three parts (head entity, relationship, and tail entity) in RDF triples from medical data, mainly text data. Following their introduction, the use of pretrained language models, such as Word2vec, BERT, and XLNET, to complete Medical Knowledge Graphs has become a popular research topic. The existing work focuses mainly on relationship completion and has rarely solved entities and related triples. In this paper, a framework to predict RDF triples for Medical Knowledge Graphs based on word embeddings (named PTMKG-WE) is proposed, for the specific use for the completion of entities and triples. The framework first formalizes existing samples for a given relationship from the Medical Knowledge Graph as prior knowledge. Second, it trains word embeddings from big medical data according to prior knowledge through Word2vec. Third, it can acquire candidate triples from word embeddings based on analogies from existing samples. In this framework, the paper proposes two strategies to improve the relation features. One is used to refine the relational semantics by clustering existing triple samples. Another is used to accurately embed the expression of the relationship through means of existing samples. These two strategies can be used separately (called PTMKG-WE-C and PTMKG-WE-M, respectively), and can also be superimposed (called PTMKG-WE-C-M) in the framework. Finally, in the current study, PubMed data and the National Drug File-Reference Terminology (NDF-RT) were collected, and a series of experiments was conducted. The experimental results show that the framework proposed in this paper and the two improvement strategies can be used to predict new triples for Medical Knowledge Graphs, when medical data are sufficiently abundant and the Knowledge Graph has appropriate prior knowledge. The two strategies designed to improve the relation features have a significant effect on the lifting precision, and the superposition effect becomes more obvious. Another conclusion is that, under the same parameter setting, the semantic precision of word embedding can be improved by extending the breadth and depth of data, and the precision of the prediction framework in this paper can be further improved in most cases. Thus, collecting and training big medical data is a viable method to learn more useful knowledge.

Yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus), a protandrous hermaphroditic fish, is a good model for studying the mechanism of sex reversal. However, limited knowledge is known about the genetic information related to reproduction and sex differentiation in this species. Here, we performed de novo transcriptome sequencing analysis of the testis, ovotestis, and ovary to identify sex-related genes in yellowfin seabream. The results assembled 71,765 unigenes in which 16,126 and 17,560 unigenes were differentially expressed in the ovotestis and ovary compared to the testis, respectively. The most differentially expressed gene (DEG)-enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and GO pathways were closely associated with the synthesis of sex steroid hormones. Functional analyses identified 55 important sex-related DEGs, including 32 testis-biased DEGs (dmrt1, amh, and sox9, etc.), 20 ovary-biased DEGs (cyp19a, foxl2, and wnt4, etc.), and 3 ovotestis-biased DEGs (lhb, dmrt2, and foxh1). Furthermore, the testis-specific expression of dmrt1 and the brain-pituitary-ovary axis expression of foxl2 were characterized, suggesting that they might play important roles in sex differentiation in yellowfin seabream. Our present work provided an important molecular basis for elucidating the mechanisms underlying sexual transition and reproductional regulation in yellowfin seabream.

Primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (PHO) is a rare familial disorder with reduced penetrance for females. The genetic mutations associated with PHO have been identified in HPGD and SLCO2A1, which involved in prostaglandin E2 metabolism. Here, we report 5 PHO patients from four non-consanguineous families. Two heterozygous mutations in solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 2A1 (SLCO2A1) were identified in two brothers by whole-exome sequencing. Three heterozygous mutations and one homozygous mutation were identified in other three PHO families by Sanger sequencing. However, there was no mutation in HPGD. These findings confirmed that homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations of SLCO2A1 were the pathogenic cause of PHO. A female individual shared the same mutations in SLCO2A1 with her PHO brother but did not have any typical PHO symptoms. The influence of sex hormones on the pathogenesis of PHO and its implication were discussed.

Abstract Increasing utilization of stabilized iron sulfides (FeS) nanoparticles implies an elevated release of the materials into the environment. To understand potential impacts and underlying mechanisms of nanoparticle-induced stress, we used the transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) technique to characterize the transcriptomes from adult zebrafish exposed to 10 mg/L carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) stabilized FeS nanoparticles for 96 h, demonstrating striking differences in the gene expression profiles in liver. The exposure caused significant expression alterations in genes related to immune and inflammatory responses, detoxification, oxidative stress and DNA damage/repair. The complement and coagulation cascades Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway was found significantly up-regulated under nanoparticle exposure. The quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction using twelve genes confirmed the RNA-seq results. We identified several candidate genes commonly regulated in liver, which may serve as gene indicators when exposed to the nanoparticles. Hepatic inflammation was further confirmed by histological observation of pyknotic nuclei, and vacuole formation upon exposure. Tissue accumulation tests showed a 2.2 times higher iron concentration in the fish tissue upon exposure. This study provides preliminary mechanistic insights into potential toxic effects of organic matter stabilized FeS nanoparticles, which will improve our understanding of the genotoxicity caused by stabilized nanoparticles.

Catfish represent 6.3% of all vertebrate species, and occupy a phylogenetic position close to the common ancestor of bony fish. Liu et al. present a reference genome of the channel catfish, and reveal a genomic basis for the evolutionary loss of scales in these species.

Yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) is a commercially important fish in Asian coastal waters. Although natural sex reversal has been described in yellowfin seabream, the mechanisms underlying sexual differentiation and gonadal development in this species remain unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to play crucial roles in gametogenesis and gonadal development. Here, two libraries of small RNAs, constructed from the testes and ovaries of yellowfin seabream, were sequenced. Across both gonads, we identified 324 conserved miRNAs and 92 novel miRNAs: 67 ovary-biased miRNAs, including the miR-200 families, the miR-29 families, miR-21, and miR-725; and 88 testis-biased miRNAs, including the let-7 families, the miR-10 families, miR-7, miR-9, and miR-202-3p. GO (Gene Ontology) annotations and KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enrichment analyses of putative target genes indicated that many target genes were significantly enriched in the steroid biosynthesis pathway and in the reproductive process. Our integrated miRNA-mRNA analysis demonstrated a putative negatively correlated expression pattern in yellowfin seabream gonads. This study profiled the expression patterns of sex-biased miRNAs in yellowfin seabream gonads, and provided important molecular resources that will help to clarify the miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation of sexual differentiation and gonadal development in this species.

ZnO/Ni3ZnC0.7/x% CNT (x = 0, 2, 5, 10) urchin-like structures have been synthesized using a facile method based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and applied as the electromagnetic absorber. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the content of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) has a great influence on the absorbing performance of the hybrid material. Conduction loss, interfacial polarization and ferromagnetic resonance all contribute to the electromagnetic absorption. The urchin-like ZnO/Ni3ZnC0.7/5% CNT composite presents excellent absorbing properties. When the filler loading of ZnO/Ni3ZnC0.7/5% CNT composite in paraffin matrix is only 10 wt.%, a minimum reflection loss of −33.2 dB is achieved at a layer thickness of 4.9 mm.

In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome of one- and two-year-old male and female brains of Cynoglossus semilaevis by high-throughput Illumina sequencing. A total of 77,066 transcripts, corresponding to 21,475 unigenes, were obtained with a N50 value of 4349 bp. Of these unigenes, 33 genes were found to have significant differential expression and potentially associated with growth, from which 18 genes were down-regulated and 12 genes were up-regulated in two-year-old males, most of these genes had no significant differences in expression among one-year-old males and females and two-year-old females. A similar analysis was conducted to look for genes associated with reproduction; 25 genes were identified, among them, five genes were found to be down regulated and 20 genes up regulated in two-year-old males, again, most of the genes had no significant expression differences among the other three. The performance of up regulated genes in Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis was significantly different between two-year-old males and females. Males had a high gene expression in genetic information processing, while female’s highly expressed genes were mainly enriched on organismal systems. Our work identified a set of sex-biased genes potentially associated with growth and reproduction that might be the candidate factors affecting sexual dimorphism of tongue sole, laying the foundation to understand the complex process of sex determination of this economic valuable species.

As the global market for fisheries and aquaculture products expands, mislabeling of these products has become a growing concern in the food safety arena. Molecular species identification techniques hold the potential for rapid, accurate assessment of proper labeling. Here we developed and evaluated DNA barcodes for use in differentiating United States domestic and imported catfish species. First, we sequenced 651 base-pair barcodes from the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene from individuals of 9 species (and an Ictalurid hybrid) of domestic and imported catfish in accordance with standard DNA barcoding protocols. These included domestic Ictalurid catfish, and representative imported species from the families of Clariidae and Pangasiidae. Alignment of individual sequences from within a given species revealed highly consistent barcodes (98% similarity on average). These alignments allowed the development and analyses of consensus barcode sequences for each species and comparison with limited sequences in public databases (GenBank and Barcode of Life Data Systems). Validation tests carried out in blinded studies and with commercially purchased catfish samples (both frozen and fresh) revealed the reliability of DNA barcoding for differentiating between these catfish species. The developed protocols and consensus barcodes are valuable resources as increasing market and governmental scrutiny is placed on catfish and other fisheries and aquaculture products labeling in the United States.

Oil leakages cause environmental pollution, economic losses, and even engineering safety accidents. In cold regions, researchers urgently investigate the movement of oil spill in soils exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. In this study, a series of laboratory model experiments were carried out on the migration of oil leakage under freeze-thaw action, and the distributions of the soil temperature, unfrozen water content, and displacement were analyzed. The results showed that under freeze-thaw action, liquid water in soils migrated to the freezing front and accumulated. After the pipe cracked, oil pollutants first gathered at one side of the leak hole, and then moved around. The pipe wall temperature affected the soil temperature field, and the thermal influence range below and transverse the pipe wall (35-40 cm) was larger than that above the pipe wall (8 cm) owing to the soil surface temperature. The leaked oil's temperature would make the temperature of the surrounding soil rise. Oil would inhibit the cooling of the soils. Besides, oil migration was significantly affected by the gravity and water flow patterns. The freeze-thaw action would affect the migration of the oil, which was mainly manifested as inhibiting the diffusion and movement of oil when soils were frozen. Unfrozen water transport caused by freeze-thaw cycles would also inhibit oil migration. The research results would provide a scientific reference for understanding the relationship between the movement of oil pollutants, water, and soil temperature, and for establishing a waterheat-mass transport model in frozen soils. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the use of microwave irradiation to improve the characteristics of expansive soils. The expansive soil samples were subjected to microwave heating in an industrial microwave oven, and were followed by analysis of the soil characteristics such as the specific gravity, liquid and plastic limit, free swelling ratio, vertical free swelling strain and swelling pressure. X-ray diffraction was also used to determine the mineral composition of the samples. Experimental results showed that the microwave irradiation induces both a rapid increase in the soil temperature and a significant change in the soil mineral content. With the increase in the power level, we observed first an increase in the specific gravity up to a peak, which was followed by a decrease. For the other characteristics such as the liquid and plastic limit, the free swelling ratio, the vertical free swelling strain and the swelling pressure, their values were observed a decrease with the increase in the power level. The change in the soils characteristics could be attributed to the impact of the irradiation on the expulsion of the interlayer structure water and on the change of soil mineral content or structure.
