Abstract Blue carbon is the carbon storage in vegetated coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass. It is gaining global attention as its role in climate change mitigation and local welfare growth. However, a global assessment on the long-term spatiotemporal sustainable development status of blue carbon has not been conducted, and the relations among blue carbon ecosystems, driving forces for climate change mitigation, and socioeconomic interventions for development capacity on a global scale are still unclear. Here, we constructed a blue carbon development index (BCDI), comprising three subsystems: driving force, resource endowment, and development capacity, to assess the sustainable development level of 136 coastal countries’ blue carbon over 24 consecutive years and explore the relationship among subsystems. We further propose a cooperation model to explore the feasibility of global blue carbon cooperation and quantify benefit allocation to specific countries. The results showed an upward trend in BCDI scores with variations in regional performance over the past two decades, and we found a positive correlation between development capacity and blue carbon resource endowment. Based on the scenario simulations of global cooperation, we found that coastal countries could improve the global average BCDI score, add 2.96 Mt of annual carbon sequestration, and generate $136.34 million in 2030 under Global Deep Cooperation scenario compared with the Business-As-Usual scenario.

The structure of macrobenthic communities in island intertidal zones serves as an important indicator for assessing the health status of ecosystems. In recent years, the unregulated and extensive development and utilization of island resources in China, coupled with the continuous deterioration of the ecological environment in the surrounding marine areas of islands, have significantly impacted the health and stability of island ecosystems. Four investigations during spring (2018, 2021) and autumn (2017, 2020) of the Niushan Island intertidal zones and surrounding waters, located off the coast of Taizhou, Zhejiang, were conducted in this study. The purpose was to explore the external factors influencing the structure of intertidal macrobenthic communities and to assess the ecological status of the island. There was a clear vertical zonation observed in the distribution of the macrobenthic communities. During this survey, the eutrophication index improved, and the temperature, salinity, and suspended particulate matter exhibited seasonal fluctuations. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus and nitrate were the environmental factors that required special attention in coastal ecological monitoring, which significantly affected the distribution of the macrobenthic communities and was strongly correlated with the biotic indices and different ecological group biomasses. Most of the islands were classified as having a moderate status based on the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'). The AZTI Biotic Index (AMBI) and Multivariate AMBI (MAMBI) indicated that almost all islands were in good status, and the evaluation results demonstrated that the AMBI and MAMBI tended to overestimate the ecological status of the rocky intertidal zone. There was a significant correlation between the MAMBI and several traditional biological indices, suggesting that the MAMBI could be introduced as an evaluation indicator for the ecological status of rocky reefs. Nevertheless, it is important to consider the boundaries of different assessment levels.

Warming and eutrophication are universal threats to bay ecosystems. However, the response of zooplankton varies due to diverse environmental settings and species composition. As a long and narrow semi-enclosed bay with low salinity (18–27) in the East China Sea, Xiangshan Bay (XSB) is jointly affected by global warming and the thermal drainage, which makes it an appropriate region for ascertaining the response of zooplankton to warming under low-salinity background. We examined the long-term changes in the abundance, biomass and dominant species of large mesozooplankton (LMZ; >505 μm) over four decades in XSB, and found downward trends in the annual abundance and biomass, and the biomass peak shifting from summer to spring since 2010. In addition, the relative abundance of cold-temperate species decreased, while that of warm-temperate/warm-water species and small-sized zooplankton increased. The decreased LMZ abundance and biomass in XSB were supposed to be related to low gelatinization compared with the other semi-enclosed bays in China, Jiaozhou Bay (JZB) in the Yellow Sea and Daya Bay (DYB) in the South China Sea, where the LMZ biomass and abundance increased or fluctuated mainly linked to the increase in gelatinous zooplankton. Salinity, temperature, and nutrient concentration are important factors affecting gelatinization. By comparing the background salinity and magnitudes of temperature and nutrient increases among the three bays, we speculated that the lower salinity (XSB: 18–27, JZB: 30–32, DYB: 30–34) influenced by freshwater input of the Changjiang River might be a potential factor causing the low gelatinization in XSB, as the similar upward trends in both nutrient concentration and temperature were observed in the three bays. This study suggests that miniaturization with low gelatinization and a decrease in cold-temperate species were the main responses of zooplankton to warming in the low-salinity bay in the East China Sea, which may lead to a specific pelagic ecosystem evolution.

Recent evidence has shown active N2 fixation in coastal eutrophic waters, yet the rate and controlling factors remain poorly understood, particularly in large estuaries. The Changjiang Estuary (CE) and adjacent shelf are characterized by fresh, nitrogen-replete Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and saline, nitrogen-depletion intruded Kuroshio water (Taiwan Warm Current and nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current), where N2 fixation may be contributed by different groups (i.e., Trichodesmium and heterotrophic diazotrophs). Here, for the first time, we provide direct measurement of size-fractionated N2 fixation rates (NFRs) off the CE during summer 2014 using the 15N2 bubble tracer method. The results demonstrated considerable spatial variations (southern > northern; offshore > inshore) in surface and depth-integrated NFRs, averaging 0.83 nmol N L−1 d−1 and 24.3 μmol N m−2 d−1, respectively. The highest bulk NFR (99.9 μmol N m−2 d−1; mostly contributed by >10 μm fraction) occurred in the southeastern East China Sea, where suffered from strong intrusion of the Kuroshio water characterized by low N/P ratio (100) were high and Trichodesmium abundance was low. The >10 μm fraction accounted for 60% of depth-integrated bulk NFR over the CE and adjacent shelf. We speculated that the present NFR of >10 μm fraction was mostly supported by Trichodesmium. Spearman rank correlation indicated that the NFR was significantly positively correlated with Trichodesmium abundance, salinity, temperature and Secchi depth, but was negatively with turbidity, N/P ratio, NOx, and chlorophyll a concentration. Our study suggests that distribution and size structure of N2 fixation off the CE are largely regulated by water mass (intruded Kuroshio water and CDW) movement and associated diazotrophs (particularly Trichodesmium) and nutrient conditions.

To build a maritime power, the implementation of the strategy of sustainable marine development and revitalization of islands is one of the major issues in China. Now, the advancement of China’s "The Belt and Road initiative" construction and the strategic deployment of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Hainan Free Trade Port have brought great opportunities for the development of large-scale island regions. Zhoushan archipelago is the largest archipelago in China, located in the Yangtze River Estuary. It is the intersection of the national strategy for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and the international archipelago new area, which has great space for development and significance of exploration to construct a global marine center city. This paper was aiming at the national strategic positioning, discussing its existing problems, and putting forward countermeasures and suggestions to promote the comprehensive development of Zhoushan Islands in combination with the successful development experience of foreign islands, based on the analysis of Zhoushan Islands' geographical location, resources and environment, ecosystem, cultural and historical status. And suggestions on the research direction of priority attention to marine ecological civilization, integrated development of watersheds with sea and land, and smart green port construction from the perspective of interdisciplinary were also put forward, so as to enrich the scientific and technical connotation of important windows and to provide reference for the implementation of the plan during the fourteenth five-year plan for Zhoushan Islands.

Flood events significantly increase water discharges and terrigenous material inputs to coastal waters. Riverine nutrients in the Changjiang Estuary are transported by the dispersion of Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) plumes and detached low-salinity water patches. However, the effects of flooding on nutrient offshore transports have not been well explored. Here, we present the nutrient conditions in the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent East China Sea in the historical flooding year 2020. Comparisons of nutrient distributions between flooding years, drought year and non-flooding years were also made. Our results showed that nitrate flux from the Changjiang River in August 2020 was 1.5 times that of the multi-year averaged flux in non-flooding years. Enormous riverine nutrient input resulted in much higher nutrient concentrations in the outer estuary than those in non-flooding years. In addition, a detached low-salinity water patch was observed, which made the salinity of the northern estuary even lower than that in the historical flooding year 1998. Surface dissolved inorganic nitrate (DIN) level in the low-salinity water patch was even ~16 times of that at nearby station in the drought year 2006. While phosphate (PO43−) concentrations were less than 0.1 μmol L−1 east of 123°E, which was probably caused by intensive biological uptake, as indicated by a high Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (29.08 μg L−1). The depleted PO43− and high N/P of the low-salinity water patch suggested PO43− limitation even under flood conditions. A three end-member mixing model was adopted to identify the contributions of the CDW end-member (CDWend-member) and biological process to nutrient distributions. Our model results showed that the nutrient contribution of the CDWend-member to the estuary (122–124°E, 31–32.5°N) in flooding year 2020 was over double that in drought year 2006. Model-derived biological DIN uptake was as high as 24.65 μmol L−1 at the low-salinity water patch. Accordingly, the estimated net community production was 566–1131 mg C m−2 d−1 within the euphotic zone. The offshore transport of a low-salinity, high-DIN water patch during flooding could probably have a significant influence on biogeochemical cycles in the broad shelf, and even the adjacent Japan Sea.

Seawater temperatures have increased with global climate change. Coolant water discharged from coastal nuclear power-generating and coal-powered plants, coupled with already increasing seawater temperatures, can adversely affect local fish communities. A sudden drop in temperature caused by the winter shutdown of power plants can also affect fish health and behavior. To assess the effects of temperature change on fish populations, we subjected early life stages of the once commercially important large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) to various water temperature experiments. Fertilized eggs showed the highest hatching rate at 23.4°C and the lowest rate of deformity in hatched larvae at 23.0°C. We determined the incipient lethal temperature for each life stages using derivation models. Ranges between the upper and lower incipient lethal temperatures increased during development from yolk-sac larvae to juveniles, especially in response to cold shock, indicating that later developmental stages in this species are more tolerant of temperature fluctuations. However, thermal tolerance is not solely determined by life stage. Our results suggest that rapid changes in seawater temperature caused by power plant coolant water discharges may significantly affect early developmental stages of fish. Critical thermal maximum tests indicate that the seawater heating rate is significantly negatively correlated with survival time and affects the critical thermal maximum value of L. crocea. On the basis of our determination of incipient lethal temperatures, emergency measures could be taken to avoid adverse economic and ecological impacts due to changes in seawater temperature caused by coolant water discharges.

The bay area is a crucial land–sea junction zone containing essential urban clusters while receiving extremely complex internal and external disturbances that challenge more on its resilience management. However, a sound management tool based on the bay area’s resilience is widely lacking due to the difficulty of unifying resilience indicators and quantifying resilience relationships between regions. This paper tries to establish a comprehensive resilience index for coastal bays from four major resilience-related dimensions, namely, physical structure, social development, ecological environment, and hazards, and applies it into the three major developed bay areas in China. A coupling coordination degree model was used to further reveal the resilience development and its internal coordination by temporal and spatial differences. The results show that the index could clearly reveal the resilience changes from the year 2000 to 2020 of the three bays with the common key drivers of socioeconomic development. It also explains the resilience changes among three bay areas through analyzing synergistic and conflict relationships between the four sub-resilience systems.

Water quality in Hangzhou Bay is inferior (grade 5) because of discharged from Yangtze River and Qiantang River, and from factories around the bay. This study analyzed relationships between the environment and macrobenthic communities at 44 stations throughout Hangzhou Bay, based on samples collected in 2006, from 2016–2018, and in 2021. Long-term spatial and temporal changed in macrobenthos, and the influence of secondary water fronts on community composition, were discussed. Macrobenthos in Qiantang River Estuary was numerically, primarily dominated by crustaceans, and elsewhere by polychaetes. Species that differ most in abundance between four identified regions in the bay were the amphipod Corophium sinensis, clam Potamocorbula laevis, and polychaete Amaeana occidentalis. The abundance and biomass of macrobenthos in different regions differs significantly. Taxa were allocated to six feeding guilds: filter feeders and omnivores predominate in Qiantang River Estuary and south of Hangzhou Bay, while surface and subsurface deposit feeders predominate in sediments north of Hangzhou Bay and in the bay mouth area. Negative correlations were apparent between the abundances of polychaetes Nephtys polybranchia, Magelona japonica, Heterospio sinica, Sabella sp. and A. occidentalis and salinity and pH, while positive correlations were apparent between those of Sternaspis chinensis and Capitellidae indet. Fine-grained fraction (silt and clay) and mid-salinity were more suitable for macrobenthos. The numbers and biomasses of macrobenthic species in the Hangzhou Bay frontal area increased significantly relative to values in adjacent areas. The difference of each area near the front was more than 94%, and the main difference species were polychaetes and mollusks. Our baseline data for this region might ultimately contribute towards improved conservation of regional macrobenthos, and a better understanding of ecosystem health in this highly polluted bay.

Coastline changes have significant impacts on coastal hydrodynamics. Xiangshan Bay is a semi-closed and long-narrow bay located in Zhejiang Province, China. Its coastline has changed dramatically in recent decades; however, the variations in the small-scale hydrodynamics in the changed coastline areas have not been carefully studied. This study uses the Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) to design a set of control experiments and five sets of compared experiments targeting the areas with significant coastline changes in Xiangshan Bay over the past 21 years. It was found that the coastline changes at the mouth of the bay, such as areas near Meishan Island and Dasong, have a significant impact on both residual currents and tidal currents, changing the amplitudes and phase distributions of the tides. Coastline changes in the inner bay have lesser impacts on hydrodynamics, mainly affecting the small-scale areas in the vicinity.

China’s coastal areas face serious environmental degradation as a consequence of large-scale economic development. To balance environmental sustainability with economic development, China is currently implementing a strategy of ‘eco-civilization’, with marine protected areas (MPAs) expected to be one approach to achieving sustainable marine ecosystems. Since the 1990s, China has established over 270 MPAs, but their effectiveness remains unknown, particularly in the Yangtze River Delta. This study modified pre-existing frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of three national MPAs in the Yangtze River Delta. The modified framework includes conservation outcomes and their potential drivers. Drivers consist of – attributes species or ecosystems within the MPA, attributes of the MPA, institutional design principles, and participation. Five scenarios were proposed based on score combinations of the four drivers: proactive, well designed, well governed, interactive, and learning. All three MPAs achieved a satisfactory level of outcomes and most of the drivers for all three MPAs achieved a satisfactory level. Two of the MPAs were categorized into the learning scenario, and the third into the well-designed scenario, indicating that there is still room to improve institutional design principles and public participation. We suggest developing cost and benefit indicators to more deeply understand proportionality among stakeholders. In addition, the role of participation should be clarified and promoted. We recommend regular environmental performance monitoring and assessment to identify problems and optimize management.

Noctiluca scintillans feeds on a large number of phytoplankton, including diatoms and dinoflagellates, and frequently forms a red tide in the East China Sea (ECS) and southern Yellow Sea (SYS). However, the spatiotemporal distribution pattern, controlling factors, and long-term change of N. scintillans in the ECS and SYS remain unclear. In the present study, we collected N. scintillans samples from the ECS and SYS throughout the four seasons of 2011. We sampled phytoplankton and environmental parameters simultaneously. The depth-integrated abundance (DIA) of N. scintillans was the highest and lowest in summer and winter, respectively. N. scintillans is distributed abundantly in eutrophic coastal waters and the Changjiang Estuary, which are characterized by high concentrations of phytoplankton and chlorophyll-a. A Spearman correlation test demonstrated that its DIA in the upper 30-m water column was generally more significantly associated with phytoplankton abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration than with temperature and salinity. The results of the generalized additive models revealed that chlorophyll-a concentration explained more of the variation in N. scintillans abundance than temperature and salinity throughout the year, particularly in warm seasons. These findings indicate that the seasonal and spatial changes of N. scintillans are largely regulated by phytoplankton biomass. Compared with the historical data from 1959 and 2002, the abundance of N. scintillans in the Changjiang Estuary increased considerably in 2011 with increasing phytoplankton abundance resulting from accelerated eutrophication and warming. These results clarify the controlling factors, red-tide formation mechanism, and changing trends associated with the N. scintillans in the ECS and SYS.

The comparison of trophic structure and energy flow between natural and artificial reefs is imperative to evaluate whether these man-made structures work similarly to comparable natural reefs. Here, to characterize the potential difference in functioning between two types of reef ecosystems, two trophic models (Ecopath) at an artificial reef and an adjacent natural reef on the coast of the north Yellow Sea, China, were established. Both Ecopath models were divided into 18 functional groups from primary producers (algae and phytoplankton) and detritus to predatory species (e.g., Sebastes schlegelii). Model outputs showed that the ecosystem scale was smaller in the artificial reef (total system throughput (TPP) = 6,455.47 t·km−2·year−1) relative to its natural counterpart (TPP = 9,490.48 t·km−2·year−1). At both reef types, a large proportion of energy occurred at trophic levels I and II, and most of the primary production was utilized through a detritus pathway. This result implies a bottom-up energy flow control for both cases. However, two types of reef systems were behaving in a reasonable manner, as mean transfer efficiencies were similar to the Lindeman efficiency (10%). The ecosystem maturity of the artificial reef is not comparable to that of the natural reef for its inferior value of total primary production/total respiration (TPP/TR). Moreover, both the connectance index (CI) and system omnivory index (SOI) were slightly higher at the artificial reef relative to the natural reef as well as other coastal systems with parallel latitudes, suggesting that the current artificial system has formed complicated interspecies relations and high-level stability. This work updates our knowledge about the functioning evolvement of established artificial reefs and provides a baseline for the efficient management of coastal zones and further investigations.

Details of the development of coastal hypoxia in response to the passage of Typhoon Bavi (2020) in the East China Sea were reconstructed by numerical modeling using a three-dimensional coupled physical–biogeochemical model. The model was validated via repeated surveys along a transect across a submerged river valley off the Changjiang Estuary before and after the passage of Typhoon Bavi. Before Bavi’s arrival, survey data indicated that the coastal hypoxia had formed off the Changjiang Estuary. However, the hypoxia was not eliminated but instead migrated and aggravated along the observed transect after the typhoon passage. This phenomenon cannot be attributed to the typhoon-induced mixing. Simulation results reveal that the observed development and spatial migration of hypoxia was mainly controlled by typhoon-induced oceanic advection. Results show that Bavi stimulated a regional quasi-barotropic cyclonic loop circulation and coastal downwelling reversing general summer circulation patterns. The onshore transport of the warmer shelf water and subsequent downwelling resulted in a warming of coastal water. The southward coastal current and downwelling induced by the typhoon also led to a migration of the hypoxic zone. Meanwhile, a massive transport of resuspended planktonic detritus from the steep inner shelf and the shallow Changjiang bank toward the submerged river valley occurred. This study reveals that the typhoon-driven currents can play an important role in the development of hypoxia and redistribution of deposited organic matter in coastal shelf seas, which may have both short- and long-term effects on the regional marine biogeochemical environment.

Fast repetition rate fluorometry (FRRf) allows for rapid non-destructive assessment of phytoplankton photophysiology in situ yet has rarely been applied to Trichodesmium. This gap reflects long-standing concerns that Trichodesmium (and other cyanobacteria) contain pigments that are less effective at absorbing blue light which is often used as the sole excitation source in FRR fluorometers—potentially leading to underestimation of key fluorescence parameters. In this study, we use a multi-excitation FRR fluorometer (equipped with blue, green, and orange LEDs) to investigate photophysiological variability in Trichodesmium assemblages from two sites. Using a multi-LED measurement protocol (447+519+634 nm combined), we assessed maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), functional absorption cross section of PSII (σPSII), and electron transport rates (ETRs) for Trichodesmium assemblages in both the Northwest Pacific (NWP) and North Indian Ocean in the vicinity of Sri Lanka (NIO-SL). Evaluating fluorometer performance, we showed that use of a multi-LED measuring protocol yields a significant increase of Fv/Fm for Trichodesmium compared to blue-only excitation. We found distinct photophysiological differences for Trichodesmium at both locations with higher average Fv/Fm as well as lower σPSII and non-photochemical quenching (NPQNSV) observed in the NWP compared to the NIO-SL (Kruskal–Wallis t-test df = 1, p < 0.05). Fluorescence light response curves (FLCs) further revealed differences in ETR response with a lower initial slope (αETR) and higher maximum electron turnover rate (ETRPSIImax) observed for Trichodesmium in the NWP compared to the NIO-SL, translating to a higher averaged light saturation EK (= ETRPSIImax/αETR) for cells at this location. Spatial variations in physiological parameters were both observed between and within regions, likely linked to nutrient supply and physiological stress. Finally, we applied an algorithm to estimate primary productivity of Trichodesmium using FRRf-derived fluorescence parameters, yielding an estimated carbon-fixation rate ranging from 7.8 to 21.1 mgC mg Chl-a–1 h–1 across this dataset. Overall, our findings demonstrate that capacity of multi-excitation FRRf to advance the application of Chl-a fluorescence techniques in phytoplankton assemblages dominated by cyanobacteria and reveals novel insight into environmental regulation of photoacclimation in natural Trichodesmium populations.

The coast of the East China Sea (ECS) is one of the regions most frequently affected by harmful algal blooms in China. Remote sensing monitoring could assist in understanding the mechanism of blooms and their associated environmental changes. Based on imagery from the Second-Generation Global Imager (SGLI) conducted by Global Change Observation Mission-Climate (GCOM-C) (Japan), the accuracy of satellite measurements was initially validated using matched pairs of satellite and ground data relating to the ECS. Additionally, using SGLI data from the coast of the ECS, we compared the applicability of three bloom extraction methods: spectral shape, red tide index, and algal bloom ratio. With an RMSE of less than 25%, satellite data at 490 nm, 565 nm, and 670 nm showed good consistency with locally measured remote sensing reflectance data. However, there was unexpected overestimation at 443 nm of SGLI data. By using a linear correction method, the RMSE at 443 nm was decreased from 27% to 17%. Based on the linear corrected SGLI data, the spectral shape at 490 nm was found to provide the most satisfactory results in separating bloom and non-bloom waters among the three bloom detection methods. In addition, the capability in harmful algae distinguished using SGLI data was discussed. Both of the Bloom Index method and the green-red Spectral Slope method were found to be applicable for phytoplankton classification using SGLI data. Overall, the SGLI data provided by GCOM-C are consistent with local data and can be used to identify bloom water bodies in the ECS, thereby providing new satellite data to support monitoring of bloom changes in the ECS.

Early life stages of marine organisms are the most sensitive stages to environment stressors including pollutants. In order to understand the toxicological effects induced by MeHg exposure on juveniles of large yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena crocea), a toxicity test was performed wherein fish were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of MeHg under laboratory conditions (18 ± 1°C; 26 ± 1 in salinity). After 30 days of 0–4.0 μg L-1 MeHg exposure, SOD activity was significantly decreased in the 0.25, 1.0, and 4.0 μg L-1 treatments; while CAT activity was significantly increased in the 4.0 μg L-1 treatments; GSH level, GPx activity were significantly elevated in the 4.0 μg L-1 treatments, respectively. Meanwhile, malondialdehyde content was also significantly increased in the 1.0 and 4.0 μg L-1 treatments with respect to the control. Acetylcholinesterase activity was significantly decreased by 18.3, 25.2, and 21.7% in the 0.25, 1.0, and 4.0 μg L-1 treatments, respectively. The expression of TCTP, GST3, Hsp70, Hsp27 mRNA were all up-regulated in juveniles with a dose-dependent manner exposed to MeHg. These results suggest that large yellow croaker juveniles have the potential to regulate the levels of antioxidant enzymes and initiate immune response in order to protect fish to some extent from oxidative stress induced by MeHg.

Continuous chemical pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in the Jiaojiang Estuary of the East Sea (China). This chemical pollution has significantly changed the estuarine environmental conditions and may have profoundly influenced the distribution of anammox bacterial communities in this estuary. Here, we investigated the influence of chemical pollution on the community composition, diversity and abundance of anammox bacteria in Jiaojiang estuarine sediments. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes showed that the majority of anammox bacterial sequences retrieved from the estuarine intertidal sediments were associated with Kuenenia. In contrast, different anammox communities composed of Brocadia, Kuenenia, Scalindua and Jettenia were found in the estuarine subtidal sediments. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the sediment nitrobenzene and organic content had significant impacts on the distribution of anammox communities in the intertidal sediments. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the diversity of anammox bacteria in the intertidal sediments was positively correlated with the organic content. In contrast, RDA results showed that the nitrobenzene content, NO(3)(-) concentration and salinity significantly influenced the distribution of anammox communities in the subtidal sediments. The diversity and relative abundance of anammox bacteria in the subtidal sediments were positively correlated with NO(3)(-) concentration.

Recent evidence has shown active N2 fixation in coastal eutrophic waters, yet the rate and controlling factors remain poorly understood, particularly in large estuaries. The Changjiang Estuary (CE) and adjacent shelf are characterized by fresh, nitrogen-replete Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and saline, nitrogendepletion intruded Kuroshio water (Taiwan Warm Current and nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current), where N2 fixation may be contributed by different groups (i.e., Trichodesmium and heterotrophic diazotrophs). Here, for the first time, we provide direct measurement of size-fractionated N2 fixation rates (NFRs) off the CE during summer 2014 using the 15N2 bubble tracer method. The results demonstrated considerable spatial variations (southern > northern; offshore > inshore) in surface and depth-integrated NFRs, averaging 0.83 nmol N L-1 d-1 and 24.3 µmol N m-2 d-1, respectively. The highest bulk NFR (99.9 µmol N m-2 d-1; mostly contributed by >10 µm fraction) occurred in the southeastern East China Sea, where suffered from strong intrusion of the Kuroshio water characterized by low N/P ratio (<10) and abundant Trichodesmium (up to 10.23 × 106 trichomes m-2). However, low NFR (mostly contributed by <10 µm fraction) was detected in the CE controlled by the CDW, where NOx concentration (up to 80 µmol L-1) and N/P ratio (>100) were high and Trichodesmium abundance was low. The >10 µm fraction accounted for 60% of depth-integrated bulk NFR over the CE and adjacent shelf. We speculated that the present NFR of >10 µm fraction was mostly supported by Trichodesmium. Spearman rank correlation indicated that the NFR was significantly positively correlated with Trichodesmium abundance, salinity, temperature and Secchi depth, but was negatively with turbidity, N/P ratio, NOx, and chlorophyll a concentration. Our study suggests that distribution and size structure of N2 fixation off the CE are largely regulated by water mass (intruded Kuroshio water and CDW) movement and associated diazotrophs (particularly Trichodesmium) and nutrient conditions.
