Abstract Aim To provide an overview of the various influencing factors related to the positive aspects of caring for dementia patients by family caregivers. Design A systematic mixed studies review. Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guided this protocol as reported. Peer-reviewed studies published in English from 1997 to the present will be searched via information sources, gray literature, and the following databases: Web of Science, PsycINFO, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Eligible trials will also be retrieved from ClinicalTrials.gov and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. This will be a mixed studies review. The Mixed Method Appraisal Tool will be used for the mixed-method studies. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale for case–control and cohort studies and the JBI quality scale for cross-sectional and interventional (i.e., randomized or quasi-experimental) studies will be consulted. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research will be used for the qualitative studies. All the data will be extricated with JBI data extraction tools. The convergent synthesis method will be used in the review. Discussion This systematic review will synthesize and analyze the factors that influence the positive aspects of caring for dementia patients by family caregivers. Conclusion The findings will help decision-makers to adopt more appropriate and effective interventions for caregivers of people with dementia. Patient or public contributions This review protocol will ascertain the factors affecting the mediation of and path to improved caregiving, explore the factors’ action mechanisms, and examine the controlling factors to design a more targeted intervention program to improve caregiving, thus improving dementia patients’ outcomes and care. Contributions of the findings will include evidence of strategies that address ongoing dementia caregiving issues and the identification of areas for future research.

Abstract Background Studies have shown that Chinese Clinicians and nurses have positive attitudes toward ACP, but no local tools exist to assess their need for ACP knowledge and skills training. resulting in their inability to initiate ACP conversations as well as poor end-of-life care for patients. Therefore, this study aims to assess the needs of Chinese Clinicians and nurses for ACP knowledge and skills training and assess the validity and reliability of a questionnaire on the Training Needs for Advance Care Planning (TNACP) scale. Methods From October to November 2021, 170 clinicians and nurses were pre-surveyed using a preliminary draft of the questionnaire. The responses were screened using item analysis, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to describe the internal consistency and stability of the questionnaire. The Content validity index (CVI), Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to test the validity of the questionnaire. Results After independent samples t-test analysis, Except for the entry “A2”, the critical ratio between the two groups of the remaining 23 items was statistically significant (p 0.40). The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that the Training Needs for Advance Care Planning (TNACP) scale model fit well(X2/df = 2.504, RMSEA = 0.092, GFI = 0.809, AGFI = 0.745, CFI = 0.931, IFI = 0.932, TLI = 0.916); the Cronbach’s α = 0.888 for the total questionnaire, and the three dimensions of Cronbach’s α were 0.729 to 0.959; and the ICC for the overall scores between the test-retest evaluations was 0.884 (p

IntroductionIn arid areas, exploring new "dry sowing wet emergence (DSWE)" water-saving irrigation techniques may become one of the most important ways to reduce agricultural irrigation water use and improve economic efficiency.MethodsThe study was conducted in a two-year field trial in 2021 and 2022, setting up three seedling emergence rates (W1: 6 mm, W2: 10.5 mm, W3: 15 mm) and two drip frequencies (D1: 2 times, D2: 4 times) for a total of six irrigation combinations.Results and discussionThe results indicate that under the "DSWE" irrigation pattern, in contrast to the low frequency treatment, the photosynthetic efficiency of cotton leaves in the high-frequency treatment is significantly higher. The stomatal conductance of cotton leaves has increased by 6.67% within two years, and the net photosynthetic rate has risen by 12.22%. Compared with the CK treatment, there is no remarkable difference in the photosynthetic indicators of the W3D2 treatment, while the net photosynthetic rate has increased by 1.68%. The population physiological indicators of each treatment group exhibit a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing as the growth period prolongs. The differences in the group population physiological indicators of cotton at the seedling stage among different seedling water treatments are relatively minor. The high frequency treatment maintains a relatively high level throughout the growth period. Compared with the low-frequency treatment, the yields of lint cotton and seed cotton in the high-frequency treatment have increased by 14.77% and 20.89%, respectively. Compared with the winter irrigation technology, there are no significant differences in the cotton yield and quality indicators of the "DSWE" high-frequency and high-seedling water treatment (W3D2). Over two years, the average unit yields of lint and seed cotton have decreased by 1.95% and 3.01%, respectively. Nevertheless, irrigation water during the growth period declined by 38.46%. The appropriate "DSWE" irrigation technology (W3D2) can significantly enhance the physiological indicators of cotton, ensuring crop yield and quality while significantly reducing the amount of agricultural irrigation water.

Abstract Renal cell cancer is associated with the coagulation system. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression is closely associated with the development of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The aim of this study was to build a novel lncRNA model to predict the prognosis and immunological state of ccRCC. The transcriptomic data and clinical data of ccRCC were retrieved from TCGA database, subsequently, the lasso regression and lambda spectra were used to filter prognostic lncRNAs. ROC curves and the C-index were used to confirm the predictive effectiveness of this model. We also explored the difference in immune infiltration, immune checkpoints, tumor mutation burden (TMB) and drug sensitivity between the high- and low-risk groups. We created an 8 lncRNA model for predicting the outcome of ccRCC. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age, tumor grade, and risk score are independent prognostic factors for ccRCC patients. ROC curve and C-index revealed the model had a good performance in predicting prognosis of ccRCC. GO and KEGG analysis showed that coagulation related genes were related to immune response. In addition, high risk group had greater TMB level and higher immune checkpoints expression. Sorafenib, Imatinib, Pazopanib, and etoposide had higher half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) in the high risk group whereas Sunitinib and Bosutinib had lower IC50. This novel coagulation-related long noncoding RNAs model could predict the prognosis of patients with ccRCC, and coagulation-related lncRNA may be connected to the tumor microenvironment and gene mutation of ccRCC.

The lack of trace element iron has become a key factor restricting vegetable yield and quality improvement. To address the low production efficiency of water–fertilizer coupling in agricultural production, we used a combination of experimental research, theoretical analysis, and mathematical modeling to systematically determine the effects of magneto-electric water irrigation with iron application on spinach growth and physiology, its yield and quality, and soil water transport characteristics. Compared with conventional water irrigation, under magneto-electric water irrigation, the water volume and applied iron concentration average increased the total accumulation of nitrogen, carbon, and iron in the aboveground part of spinach by 3.71%, 10.16%, and 14.14%, respectively, and the aboveground part of spinach had the highest total accumulation of nitrogen and carbon when irrigation water was 3300 m3 ha−1 and iron fertilizer application at 0.15%. Additionally, magneto-electric water irrigation increased spinach aboveground fresh weight and soluble sugar and protein content by an average of 13.34, 18.26, and 11.61%, respectively. Based on a comprehensive quantitative evaluation and analysis of aboveground nutrient accumulation in spinach, aboveground fresh weight, water use efficiency, and soluble sugar and protein content, we determined the optimal irrigation water and iron fertilizer application for spinach growth.

The problem of poor water and fertilizer retention in sandy soils can lead to physiological growth restriction and yield and quality decline in apples. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) formula can improve the soil structure and increase the water- and fertilizer-holding capacity of the soil, and Biogenic Stimulant (BS) can improve the drought stress resistance of crops and promote the physiological growth of crops. Considering that CMC and BS may improve the physiological characteristics of sandy soil apples, in this study, CMC was coupled with BS in sandy apples, and the effects on the physiological characteristics, yield, and quality of apples were systematically investigated. The results showed that CMC and BS could increase leaf N, P, and K content, with the greatest increases seen in the Y2C2 treatment (9.28, 0.61, and 0.56 g kg−1, respectively) compared with the CK treatment. The SPAD values of leaves following the coupled CMC and BS treatment compared to the CK treatment were elevated in the range of 4.47–24.29% at the flowering and fruiting stage, 2.84–26.50% at fruit expansion stage, and 6.64–19.41% at maturation stage. In the light response data of different treatments, the maximum net photosynthetic rate occurred in the Y2C2 treatment, and the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance were all the highest in the Y2C2 treatment during the fruit expansion stage, with the net photosynthetic rate being higher than that of the CK treatment by 5.09 µmol m−2 s−1. The combination treatments of CMC and BS increased apple yield by 10.69 to 27.62% as compared to the CK treatment, and also increased soluble reducing sugar, soluble solids, and VC and reduced the titratable acid content. There was no correlation between the SPAD value during fruit expansion (p > 0.05) and the other physiological indexes (p < 0.05). Through the established functional relationship between the application rate of CMC and BS and apple yield, the recommended BS application rate of 27 kg ha−1 and CMC application rate of 20.625 kg ha−1 could yield up to 43,357.8 kg ha−1.

Abstract Background Existing evidence shows that there is an independent correlation between nephrolithiasis and gout, and hyperuricemia is the most important risk factor for gout. However, hyperuricemia was often used as an accompanying symptom of gout to explore its association with nephrolithiasis, there were few studies to explore whether hyperuricemia itself or serum uric acid (SUA) is related to the risk of nephrolithiasis. Evidence on the relationship between hyperuricemia and nephrolithiasis is still insufficient. Methods A total of 22,303 participants aged 30 to 79 years who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study in Yunnan Province from May 2018 to September 2019 were included in the study. All participants received standardized face-to-face interviews, medical examinations, and biochemical examinations. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between hyperuricemia and nephrolithiasis, and a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model was used to explore the dose–response relationship between SUA and the risk of nephrolithiasis. Results 14.5% of all participants were diagnosed with hyperuricemia, and 12.1% were diagnosed with nephrolithiasis. Bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the brain has sparked interest in exploring the link between mobile phone addiction (MPA) and sleep disorders (SD) in microbiome research. However, investigating the role of gut microbiota in this relationship using animal models presents challenges due to the unique nature of MPA, and human research in this area is scarce. We recruited 99 healthy college students to evaluate the gut microbiome using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and assess MPA and SD at baseline and after a two-month follow-up. Multiple covariate-adjusted statistical models, including linear regression, permutational multivariate analysis of variance and so on, were employed to determine microbiome associations with MPA at baseline and changes in SD at follow-up. Our findings revealed negative associations between MPA and three alpha diversity metrics, along with alterations in bacterial composition. MPA showed negative associations with the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, while displaying positive associations with Actinobacteria and Bifidobacteriales. Conversely, Actinobacteria exhibited a negative association with increased SD. This study has established a significant link between MPA and a decrease in the alpha diversity of the gut microbiota. Actinobacteria was associated with MPA and SD, respectively. Additional investigation is needed to fully comprehend the relationship between comorbid behavioral disorders and the gut microbiota.

Objective Sedentary behaviour is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes, including obesity, oestrogen metabolism and chronic inflammation, all of which are related to the pathogenesis of uterine fibroids (UFs). This study aimed to explore the relationship between leisure sedentary time (LST) and UFs.Design Cross-sectional.Setting We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from patients from the Yunnan region in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort Study.Participants A total of 6623 non-menopausal women aged 30–55 years old were recruited. Menstrual status was self-reported. Participants who lacked a unique national identity card, suffered from serious mental illness, did not have a clear diagnosis of UFs, or provided incomplete information were excluded.Primary and secondary outcome UFs were diagnosed by abdominal B-ultrasound. Leisure sedentary behaviour was assessed by using a face-to-face questionnaire interview. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were employed to explore the relationship between LST and UFs.Results A total of 562 participants had UFs, with a prevalence rate of 8.5% (7.8%, 9.2%). Multivariate adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of UFs in women with LST≥6 hour/day was 2.008 times that in women with LST0.05). According to the results of the stratified analysis for menstrual status and body mass index (BMI), there was a correlation between LST and the prevalence of UFs only in women with a BMI

Soil amendments such as humic acid (HA), a biochar-based microbial agent (M), and vermicompost (V) can improve soil quality and promote crop growth. However, it remains unclear whether the co-application of the three soil amendments (HMV) has a synergistic effect on alleviating soil quality deterioration obstacles caused by dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields. A three-year field experiment was conducted in saline–alkali soils using plastic-film-mulched drip irrigation in Xinjiang, China. Through the orthogonal experiment method, the application amounts of HA, M and V were 75 kg ha−1, 75 kg ha−1 and 225 kg ha−1 respectively in 2021. In 2022, three application amount gradients were used for HA, M and V: 60 kg ha−1, 90 kg ha−1 and 120 kg ha−1 respectively. In 2023, the application amounts of HA, M, and V were 60 kg ha−1, 120 kg ha−1, and 120 kg ha−1. It should be pointed out that V contains HA in the range of 20–35%. This study aimed to explore the improvement effect of a single or combined application of HA, M, and V on soil quality and cotton emergence rate using dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields. The results showed that the single and combined applications of HA, M, and V improved the soil quality and water–heat–salt environment of the cultivated layer. In the combined application, the cotton seedling emergence rate and yield increased by 1.9–22.8% and 7.0–54.1%. Therefore, it is recommended to jointly apply HA, M, and V to promote cotton seedling emergence and increase yield using dry sowing and wet emergence technology in Xinjiang cotton fields.

Determining a suitable “dry sowing and wet emergence” water control program for cotton fields in the arid regions of Northwest China is of great significance in saving water resources, improving economic efficiency, and promoting sustainable development of agriculture. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of different “dry sowing and wet emergence” water control treatments on dry matter accumulation, chlorophyll fluorescence, yield quality, and water productivity of cotton, and to determine the optimal “dry sowing and wet emergence” water control program for cotton growth in arid areas. A two-year experiment was carried out in 2021 and 2022 in mulched drip-irrigated cotton fields, with a total of 13 treatments of different seedling water quantities (2021: 67.5 mm, 90 mm, 112.5 mm; 2022: 6 mm, 10.5 mm, 15 mm) and different drip frequencies (frequencies means number of drops at seedling stage) (2021: one, two, three times; 2022: two times, four times) in the “dry sowing and wet emergence”. Results indicated a positive correlation between increased seedling water quantity and growth indexes. High seedling water quantity treatment demonstrated a 14.33% higher cotton yield than the low seedling water quantity treatment. In comparison with low-frequency treatment, the high-frequency treatment exhibited significantly larger cotton plant height, dry matter accumulation, and yield. Over two years, the average values increased by 8.69%, 16.4%, and 15.91%, respectively, with a 14.55% increase in the coefficient of photochemical quenching of the leaf blade (qP). The high frequency and larger amount of seedling water quantity treatments showed significantly higher irrigation water productivity, with increases of 39.2% and 70.2% compared to the winter irrigation control treatment. In summary, the appropriate “dry sowing wet emergence” water regulation mode (the first drip: 15 mm, the second drip: 4.5 mm, the third drip: 22.5 mm, the fourth drip: 15 mm) can ensure crop yield quality under the premise of significantly reducing the agricultural irrigation water, which can provide certain theoretical support for the green, efficient, and sustainable development of the local cotton industry.

Objectives This study aims to investigate whether PD-1 expressions are abnormal in patients with TAK. Methods PD-1 expression was analyzed by flow cytometry. Serum cytokines IL-10, IL-7, IL-2, IL-15, CCL2, CCL3, and CXCL10 were detected using a cytokine cytometric bead array. Immunohistochemistry staining analysis was used to test PD-1 and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in the aorta of three patients with TAK and three patients with atherosclerosis as controls. Results The mean fluorescence intensity of PD-1 in CD4 + PD-1 + cells was decreased in patients with TAK and the frequency of CD4 + Foxp3 − PD-1 + cells among CD4 + T cells was also decreased in peripheral blood relative to healthy controls ( P .05). ABSTRACT Clay soil results in higher crop yield and quality than sandy soil. However, irrigation causes clay soil to slump easily, increasing compactness and decreasing soil oxygen content. This study investigated the effects of dry seeding and wet emergence on the soil microenvironment and cotton growth promotion in Xinjiang silt loam fields. The experimental design included three aerated and three non-aerated treatments. The results showed that aerated irrigation decreased dry density of the 0–20 cm soil layer to different degrees, the field capacity increased to different degrees, and the dry density and field capacity of the 20-30 cm soil layer did not change among the different treatments. The dry density and field capacity of WP2 treatment changed the most, the dry density of 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm soil layer were respectively 1.28 g cm-3 and 1.27 g cm-3, and the field capacity were respectively 35.23% and 35.7%. Under the same irrigation quota, the soil water content of the aerated treatments was lower than that of the non-aerated treatments. Aerated irrigation inhibited the horizontal diffusion of water and facilitated downward water transport. The WP2 treatment had the highest peak soil temperature at depths of 10 and 20 cm, and the WP2 treatment had the highest numbers of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, urease, and catalase activities, seedling emergence, primary root length, plant height, and stem thickness.

BackgroundSmartphone addiction (SA) is associated with adverse consequences, especially for freshmen. Evidence indicates that SA is associated with depression, and it is necessary to conduct a longitudinal study to explore the association further.MethodsSA (measured by the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version) and depression (measured by the Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale) among 1,186 freshmen were surveyed at baseline and a respective 12-month follow-up for each participant. The application of a cross-lagged panel model approach (CLPM) revealed an association between SA and depression after adjusting for demographic variables.ResultsThe CLPM results showed a significant path from baseline SA to follow-up depression (β = 0.08, P < 0.001) and a significant path from baseline depression to follow-up SA (β = 0.08, P < 0.001). Compared with the overall cross-lagged model, the cross-lagged coefficient of the path from baseline SA to follow-up depression increased in the female group (β = 0.10, P = 0.015), and the cross-lagged coefficient of the path from baseline depression to follow-up SA also increased significantly (β = 0.15, P < 0.001). In contrast, the cross-lagged model in the male group showed no predictive effect between SA and depression (P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe current study showed a significant bidirectional association between smartphone addiction and depression among freshmen, but only in the female population.

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and fluoride are among the most common environmental pollutants affecting human health, and both co-exist in areas predominantly consuming coal. It is vital to analyse the combined toxicity of SO2 and fluoride, and their effects on health and the underlying mechanisms of their co-exposure have not yet been adequately assessed. In the present study, we used ICR mice and LS8 cells to investigate the toxicity of SO2 and fluoride exposure to the enamel, alone or in combination. Factorial design analysis was used to reveal the combined toxicity in vitro and in vivo. Co-exposure to SO2 and fluoride exacerbated enamel injury, resulting in more severe hypomineralization of incisor, and enamel structure disorders in mice, and could induce the accumulation of protein residue in the matrix of the enamel. Amelogenin expression was increased upon exposure to SO2 and fluoride, but enamel matrix proteases were not affected. Consistent with our in vivo results, co-exposure of SO2 and fluoride aggravated amelogenin expression in LS8 cells, and increased the YAP and RUNX2 levels. Co-exposure to SO2 and fluoride resulted in greater toxicity than individual exposure, both in vitro and in vivo, indicating that residents of areas exposed to SO2 and fluoride may have an increased risk of developing enamel damage.

ObjectiveTo evaluate whether social capital played a mediating role in the relationship between negative life events (NLE) and quality of life (QoL) among adults in China after proposed a conceptual model based on stress buffering theory.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted based on baseline survey from the Chinese Multi-ethnic Cohort (CMEC) in Yunnan province. A total of 22,866 adults were recruited by multistage stratified cluster sampling. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the general demographic characteristics and the occurrence of NLE. A self-developed brief social capital scale was utilized to assess the social capital and the EQ-5D-5L scale was used to measure the QoL. The relationships among NLE, social capital and QoL were analyzed using multiple linear regression analyses. Structural equation models were used to evaluate whether social capital had a mediating effect on the relationship between NLE and QoL. The standardize coefficient (β) and it's 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated in this process.ResultsThe mean age of participants was 52.70 years old. The mean of EQ-5D index value was 0.92 (SD = 0.12) and the mean of EQ-VAS score was 71.77 (SD = 13.80). NLE not only directly affected EQ-5D index value [β = −0.127, 95% CI (−0.144, −0.110)] but also indirectly negatively affected EQ-5D index value through social capital [β = −0.019, 95% CI (−0.023, −0.015)]. Social capital had a direct positive effect on EQ-5D index value [β = 0.114, 95% CI (0.097, 0.133)]. A similar pattern was identified for the association between NLE and EQ-VAS score. The direct effect of NLE on EQ-VAS score was negatively significant [β = −0.132, 95% CI (−0.146, −0.118)]. Moreover, the indirect effect through social capital was also negatively significant [β = −0.022, 95% CI (−0.026, −0.019)]. There was a positive direct effect of social capital on EQ-VAS score [β = 0.135, 95% CI (0.117, 0.151)].ConclusionSocial capital played an important mediating role in the relationship between NLE and QoL, and it alleviated the negative effects of NLE on the QoL of the community residents in China. Providing reliable social capital for community residents experiencing NLE could effectively improve their quality of life.

Interlayer soil is common in southern Xinjiang, because interlayer can reduce the infiltration rate of soil water. To simulate the interlayer soil in heavy saline–alkali cotton fields, this paper adopted a vertical one-dimensional infiltration test. T1 (315 mm), T2 (270 mm), and T3 (225 mm) and different interlayer positions (T5, 315 mm) and thicknesses of the interlayer (T6, 315 mm) with the same irrigation volume, as well as one perforation and sand filling treatment (T4, 315 mm), were set. The influence of different irrigation amounts, locations, and thicknesses of the interlayer and sand injection on water infiltration was analyzed. The analysis results showed that with the increase in irrigation amount, the water infiltration rate and the migration distance of the wet front increased, but did not penetrate to the bottom soil (90 cm). Under the same irrigation volume, the increase in interlayer thickness (T6) compared with the increase in interlayer position (T5), the change in soil moisture content in the upper and lower layers of the interlayer was greater, and the advance time of wetting front migration and cumulative infiltration were slightly higher. After tunneling and sand filling (T4), the infiltration rate of water was increased, the migration time of the wet front was reduced, and the profile water content of each soil layer was improved. The Kostiakov model could better simulate the water infiltration characteristics of interlayer soil with different profile configurations in heavily saline–alkali land. The results showed that in all of the treatments, only the wet front of the soil moisture reached 100 cm in the T4 treatment, and the maximum was only 87.8 cm in the other treatments, indicating that too little irrigation water or the upward movement and thickening of the interlayer were not conducive to water infiltration. For the interlayer soil area in the heavy saline–alkali land in southern Xinjiang, the appropriate irrigation water should be more than 315 mm. The treatment of drilling first and then filling sand can be used as a simple but effective measure to increase the water infiltration rate of the interlayer soil, and can thus be applied to the layered soil structure in the interlayer position of 60–80 cm.

ABSTRACT In grape, high temperatures and low humidity prolong midday depression of foliar photosynthesis and dramatically reduce fruit yield. In this study, we explored the effects of various mist micro-spray treatments on grape photosynthesis at a test site in Shanshan County (N, 42.91°; E, 90.30°), Turpan, Xinjiang, China. We tested four different mist micro-spray durations including 1 h (WP1), 2 h (WP2), 3 h (WP3), and 0 h (CK). WP1, WP2, and WP3 affected canopy air temperature and humidity for 5 h, 7 h, and 9 h, respectively. At 12:30, WP1, WP2, and WP3 had the strongest cooling effect and altered temperature by −5.12 °C, −5.09 °C, and −5.17 °C respectively. The relative chlorophyll content was higher in the upper than the lower canopy leaves. There were no differences in the same leaf layers across treatments. The net photosynthesis and transpiration rates and stomatal conductance were higher for the upper than the lower canopy leaves. Compared with CK, the mist micro-spray treatments mitigated “midday depression” in the upper leaves and eliminated it altogether in the lower leaves. Mist micro-spray for 1 h d-1 most effectively improved grape leaf photosynthesis. The findings of the present study lay an empirical foundation for improving grape leaf photosynthesis and fruit yield.

The imbalance of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants is considered to be an important factor in the cellular injury of the inner ear. At present, great attention has been placed on oxidative stress. However, little is known about fighting oxidative stress. In the current study, we evaluated antioxidant-induced cochlear damage by applying several different additional antioxidants. To determine whether excessive antioxidants can cause damage to cochlear cells, we treated cochlear explants with 50 μM M40403, a superoxide dismutase mimetic, 50 μM coenzyme Q-10, a vitamin-like antioxidant, or 50 μM d-methionine, an essential amino acid and the important antioxidant glutathione for 48 h. Control cochlear explants without the antioxidant treatment maintained their normal structures after incubation in the standard serum-free medium for 48 h, indicating the maintenance of the inherent oxidative and antioxidant balance in these cochlear explants. In contrast, M40403 and coenzyme Q-10-treated cochlear explants displayed significant hair cell damage together with slight damage to the auditory nerve fibers. Moreover, d-methiodine-treated explants exhibited severe damage to the surface structure of hair cells and the complete loss of the spiral ganglion neurons and their peripheral fibers. These results indicate that excessive antioxidants are detrimental to cochlear cells, suggesting that inappropriate dosages of antioxidant treatments can interrupt the balance of the inherent oxidative and antioxidant capacity in the cell. Several experimental studies have suggested that individual essential metal(loid)s (EMs) could regulate the gut microbiota. However, human studies assessing the associations between EMs and gut microbiota are limited. This study aimed to examine the associations of individual and multiple EMs with the compositions of the gut microbiota in older adults. A total of 270 Chinese community-dwelling people over 60 years old were included in this study. Urinary concentrations of selected EMs, including vanadium (V), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and molybdenum (Mo), were examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The gut microbiome was assessed using the 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. The zero-inflated probabilistic principal components analysis PCA (ZIPPCA) model was performed to denoise substantial noise in microbiome data. Linear regression and the Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) models were utilized to determine the associations between urine EMs and gut microbiota. No significant association between urine EMs and gut microbiota was found in the total sample, whereas some significant associations were found in subgroup analyses: Co was negatively associated with the microbial Shannon (β = −0.072, p < 0.05) and the inverse-Simpson (β = −0.045, p < 0.05) indices among urban older adults; Ca (R2 = 0.035) and Sr (R2 = 0.023) exhibited significant associations with the altercations of beta diversity in females, while V (R2 = 0.095) showed a significant association with altercations of beta diversity in those who often drank. Furthermore, the associations between partial EMs and specific bacterial taxa were also found: the negative and linear associations of Mo with Tenericutes, Sr with Bacteroidales, and Ca with Enterobacteriaceae and Lachnospiraceae, and a positive and linear association of Sr with Bifidobacteriales were found. Our findings suggested that EMs may play an important role in maintaining the steady status of gut microbiota. Prospective studies are needed to replicate these findings.

In order to further explore the influence of the outer fin structure on flow boiling heat transfer, the refrigerant R410A was used to conduct flow boiling heat transfer experiments outside three kinds of enhanced tubes with different outer fin structures (including micro-porous, integral-fin, and independent small bosses structures). The outer diameter of the tubes is 19.05 mm with a mass flux range of 50 kg/m2 s–80 kg/m2 s, and the inlet and outlet vapor quality is maintained at 0.2 and 0.8, respectively. The micro-porous tube showed the best heat transfer performance in the test conditions (the heat transfer coefficient is about 2.52–2.64 times of that of the smooth tube), and the next is the integral-fin tube. Due to local evaporation to dryness, the performance of the independent small bosses tube is inferior to that of the smooth tube. In addition, the heat transfer characteristics of the micro-porous tube under different average vapor qualities were tested and analyzed. Finally, the heat transfer coefficient of the tested tubes can be accurately predicted by modified correlations in the deviation of ±10%.

The surface area (SA) of organs and cells may vary with temperature, which changes the SA exchange limitation on metabolic flows as well as the influence of temperature on metabolic scaling. The effect of SA change can intensify (when the effect is the same as that of temperature) or compensate for (when the effect is the opposite of that of temperature) the negative effects of temperature on metabolic scaling, which can result in multiple patterns of metabolic scaling with temperature among species. The present study aimed to examine whether metabolic scaling in black carp changes with temperature and to identify the link between metabolic scaling and SA at the organ and cellular levels at different temperatures. The resting metabolic rate (RMR), gill surface area (GSA) and red blood cell (RBC) size of black carp with different body masses were measured at 10 °C and 25 °C, and the scaling exponents of these parameters were compared. The results showed that both body mass and temperature independently affected the RMR, GSA and RBC size of black carp. A consistent scaling exponent of RMR (0.764, 95% CI [0.718–0.809]) was obtained for both temperatures. The RMR at 25 °C was 2.7 times higher than that at 10 °C. At both temperatures, the GSA scaled consistently with body mass by an exponent of 0.802 (95% CI [0.759–0.846]), while RBC size scaled consistently with body mass by an exponent of 0.042 (95% CI [0.010–0.075]). The constant GSA scaling can explain the constant metabolic scaling as temperature increases, as metabolism may be constrained by fluxes across surfaces. The GSA at 10 °C was 1.2 times higher than that at 25 °C, which suggests that the constraints of GSA on the metabolism of black carp is induced by the higher temperature. The RBC size at 10 °C was 1.1 times higher than that at 25 °C. The smaller RBC size (a larger surface-to-volume ratio) at higher temperature suggests an enhanced oxygen supply and a reduced surface boundary limit on bR, which offset the negative effect of temperature on bR.

The metabolic rate could be one of the factors affecting the salinity tolerance capacity of fish. Experiment I tested whether metabolic rates correlate with the upper salinity tolerance limit among individual grass carp by daily increasing salinity (1 g kg−1 day−1). The feeding dropped sharply as the salinity reached 10 g kg−1 and ceased when salinities exceeded 11 g kg−1. The ventilation frequency decreased weakly as salinity increased from 0 to 12 g kg−1 and then increased rapidly as salinity reached 14 g kg−1. The fish survived at salinities lower than 14 g kg−1, and all fish died when salinity reached 17 g kg−1. The upper salinity tolerance limit was not correlated with metabolic rates. Therefore, a lower metabolic rate may not necessarily allow for better salinity tolerance capacity. Experiment II tested how different salinities (0, 0.375, 0.75, 1.5, 3, and 6 g kg−1 for 2 weeks) affect the metabolic parameters of grass carp. The changes in the resting metabolic rate with increasing salinity could be explained by the relative changes in interlamellar cell mass and protruding lamellae. The maximum metabolic rate remained constant, suggesting that the salinity-induced changes in the gill surface had a minor effect on oxygen uptake capacity.

Bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the brain has sparked interest in exploring the link between mobile phone addiction (MPA) and sleep disorders (SD) in microbiome research. However, investigating the role of gut microbiota in this relationship using animal models presents challenges due to the unique nature of MPA, and human research in this area is scarce. We recruited 99 healthy college students to evaluate the gut microbiome using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and assess MPA and SD at baseline and after a two-month follow-up. Multiple covariate-adjusted statistical models, including linear regression, permutational multivariate analysis of variance and so on, were employed to determine microbiome associations with MPA at baseline and changes in SD at follow-up. Our findings revealed negative associations between MPA and three alpha diversity metrics, along with alterations in bacterial composition. MPA showed negative associations with the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, while displaying positive associations with Actinobacteria and Bifidobacteriales. Conversely, Actinobacteria exhibited a negative association with increased SD. This study has established a significant link between MPA and a decrease in the alpha diversity of the gut microbiota. Actinobacteria was associated with MPA and SD, respectively. Additional investigation is needed to fully comprehend the relationship between comorbid behavioral disorders and the gut microbiota.
