To reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants, the development of low-carbon or carbon-free fuel combustion technologies has become urgent. As a new zero-carbon fuel, ammonia (NH3) can be used to address the storage and transportation issues of hydrogen energy. Since it is not feasible to completely replace coal with ammonia in the short term, the development of ammonia–coal co-combustion technology at the current stage is a fast and feasible approach to reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. This study focuses on modifying the boiler and installing two layers of eight pure-ammonia burners in a 300-MW coal-fired power plant to achieve ammonia–coal co-combustion at proportions ranging from 20% to 10% (by heat ratio) at loads of 180- to 300-MW, respectively. The results show that, during ammonia–coal co-combustion in a 300-MW coal-fired power plant, there was a more significant change in NOx emissions at the furnace outlet compared with that under pure-coal combustion as the boiler oxygen levels varied. Moreover, ammonia burners located in the middle part of the main combustion zone exhibited a better high-temperature reduction performance than those located in the upper part of the main combustion zone. Under all ammonia co-combustion conditions, the NH3 concentration at the furnace outlet remained below 1 parts per million (ppm). Compared with that under pure-coal conditions, the thermal efficiency of the boiler slightly decreased (by 0.12%–0.38%) under different loads when ammonia co-combustion reached 15 t·h−1. Ammonia co-combustion in coal-fired power plants is a potentially feasible technology route for carbon reduction.

Rapid and accurate acquisition of soil organic matter (SOM) information in cultivated land is important for sustainable agricultural development and carbon balance management. This study proposed a novel approach to predict SOM with high accuracy using multiyear synthetic remote sensing variables on a monthly scale. We obtained 12 monthly synthetic Sentinel-2 images covering the study area from 2016 to 2021 through the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, and reflectance bands and vegetation indices were extracted from these composite images. Then the random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) models were tested to investigate the difference in SOM prediction accuracy under different combinations of monthly synthetic variables. In order to optimize the operational safety and reliability of the upper launcher for the CFETR ECRH system, a design of the launcher based on the remote steering concept is currently being carried out for comparison with the front steering equivalent. This paper presents the remote steering system's conceptual design and simulation analysis. A Square Corrugated Waveguide (SCW) of 65 × 65 mm has been designed with an optimized length of 9.35 m. By changing the relative length of the waveguide, the transmission efficiency of the SCW is optimized within the range of steering angles ±12°. Different error factors are investigated in detail, and corresponding acceptable error ranges are provided. Considering these error factors and ignoring ohmic losses and thermal effects, the relative transmission efficiency of the SCW is estimated to be >98 % within the steering angle range. A matching steering unit for the SCW is designed, which consists of an ellipsoidal focusing mirror and a steerable flat mirror. The detailed design of the steerable mirror motion trajectory is presented. Also, the influence of the possible beam incident errors caused by the steering unit on the transmission efficiency is analyzed in detail.

The increasingly improved transportation infrastructure network is the prerequisite and foundation for driving regional development. Scientifically investigating the mechanisms by which the transport superiority degree (TSD) in arid regions affects the health of ecosystems holds significant practical value and importance for ecosystem protection and regional sustainable development. This study investigates the impact of the TSD on the Ecosystem Health Levels (EHL) in Southern Xinjiang, China, an area characterized by its arid climate and ecological vulnerability. Arid regions, such as Southern Xinjiang, often face unique ecological challenges, including water scarcity, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss, which can be exacerbated by human activities including transportation infrastructure development. By leveraging multi-source remote sensing data, this research aims to uncover the intricate dynamics between TSD and EHL in such a fragile ecological context. The findings of this study are critical for understanding the balance between infrastructural development and environmental conservation in arid regions and provide valuable insights for sustainable planning and policy-making in similar ecological settings. The research results show the following: (1) Over the study period, county-scale TSD in southern Xinjiang generally increased, while the conditions of EHL deteriorated, with higher EHL in the eastern counties than in the western counties. (2) Bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis reveals a significant spatial dependency between county-scale TSD and EHL, with primary relationship types being LH (Low TSD − High EHL) and HL (High TSD − Low EHL). (3) Spatial regression model results indicate that an increase in TSD leads to the deterioration of county-scale EHL, and during the study period, it was observed that the interference of TSD on EHL gradually weakened.

The modified N50 (N50H) cable-in-conduit conductor CICC jacket developed by China will be applied in China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR). Building upon the N50H material, China has developed a corresponding welding material and conducted R&D work on N50H jacket welding. We simulated the N50H jacket welded joint to replicate the entire process of CICC preparation, which includes extrusion, bending, straightening and aging. The magnetic properties of welded joints were evaluated at various temperatures using a physical property measurement system. In addition, the microstructure of the welded joint was studied by various microscopic analysis techniques, and the welded joint showed a stable austenitic structure. Furthermore, mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated at different temperatures with particular emphasis on their behavior at 4.2 K. The circle-in-square ReBCO conductor jackets welding joint showed a yield strength greater than 1500 MPa, a fracture toughness KIC better than 260 MPa m1/2 and the elongation at break is more than 30 % at 4.2 K. However, a decrease in strength, ductility, and fracture toughness is observed within the welded joints of Nb3Sn conductor jackets after undergoing an aging process. This study will present experimental data on welding joints and discuss the feasibility of N50H as a high-magnetic field jacket material for next-generation fusion reactors.

Abstract In order to study the influence of structural parameters of porous gas bearing and operating parameters of linear compressor on the static and dynamic performance of porous gas bearing, based on gas lubrication theory, Darcy's law and Reynolds equation, the mathematical model and simulation model of porous gas bearing of linear compressor are derived and established. The static and dynamic characteristics of the porous gas bearing of the linear compressor are studied by using Fluent software simulation. According to the simulation results, the effects of inlet pressure, porous material thickness and gas gap on the gas consumption and bearing capacity of the porous gas bearing under different eccentricities are analyzed. The results show that the higher the inlet pressure is, the larger the gas consumption and bearing capacity; the thicker the porous material is, the smaller the gas consumption and the larger the bearing capacity, the thicker the gas gap is, the larger the gas consumption and the smaller the bearing capacity. On the basis of simulation research, considering the difficulties of processing and assembly, multi-objective optimization of porous gas bearings is carried out based on response surface methodology. Taking the bearing capacity and gas consumption as the objective functions, the intake pressure is set between 0.3 and 0.5 MPa, the thickness of porous materials is set between 3 and 5 mm, and the thickness of gas gaps is set between 10 and 20 μm. While ensuring the stable operation of the linear compressor, the optimal combination of design parameters is provided for the optimal design of gas bearings used in linear compressors.

In order to deepen the knowledge of the seasonal variation in total cloud cover (TCC) in Xinjiang, China (XJ), a typical arid region, and to broaden the understanding of the seasonal variation in cloud type (CLT) in the region, we used TCC and CLT datasets from the latest generation of the geostationary satellite Fengyun 4A (FY-4A) from 2018 to 2022 to investigate the seasonal variation characteristics of TCC and CLT in XJ. Meanwhile, to verify the accuracy of TCC from FY-4A, ground observation (GROB) TCC datasets from 105 national meteorological stations (NMSs) in XJ and TCC datasets from ERA5 during the same period were used. In addition, the correlation between TCC from FY-4A and meteorological factors from ERA5 was also analyzed in this study. The TCC from FY-4A, GROB, and ERA5 can all well reflect the significant seasonal variation in TCC in XJ, with the highest (lowest) mean TCC and a distribution pattern of high in the southwest (northwest) and low in the northeast (southeast) in spring (fall) in XJ. Although the mean TCC from FY-4A in all four seasons was lower than that from GROB, the two were comparable in spring (44.09% and 47.32%) and summer (42.88% and 43.17%), while there was a significant difference between the two in fall (27.86% and 40.19%) and winter (30.58% and 46.93%) for 105 NMSs in XJ. The TCC from FY-4A was lower (higher) than that from GROB in spring and summer at most NMSs in northern (southern) XJ, while the TCC from FY-4A was lower than that from GROB for the vast majority of NMSs in fall and winter, especially in northern XJ. The seasonal variation in the spatial distribution of different CLTs (clear, water-type, supercooled-type, mixed-type, ice-type, cirrus-type, and overlap-type) from FY-4A exhibited diverse variation characteristics. Water-type (supercooled-water-type) had a high-frequency center of over 30% in the Tarim Basin (Kunlun Mountains) during summer. Mixed-type (ice-type and cirrus-type) had the highest frequency in winter (spring), while overlap-type had the highest frequency in summer. The correlation between TCC and water vapor conditions (total column vertically integrated water vapor, specific humidity at 250 hPa, 500 hPa, and 700 hPa) was positive in XJ.

Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7/C (NFPP) is a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, but its electrochemical performance is heavily impeded by its low electronic conductivity. To address this, pure-phase Mo6+-doped Na4Fe3−xMox(PO4)2P2O7/C (Mox-NFPP, x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) with the Pn21a space group is successfully synthesized through spray drying and annealing methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mo6+ doping facilitates the transition of electrons from the valence to the conduction band, thus enhancing the intrinsic electron conductivity of Mox-NFPP. With an optimal Mo6+ doping level of x = 0.10, Mo0.10-NFPP exhibits lower charge transfer resistance, higher sodium-ion diffusion coefficients, and superior rate performance. As a result, the Mo0.10-NFPP cathode offers an initial discharge capacity of up to 123.9 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, nearly reaching its theoretical capacity. Even at a high rate of 10 C, it delivers a high discharge capacity of 86.09 mAh g−1, maintaining 96.18% of its capacity after 500 cycles. This research presents a new and straightforward strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of NFPP cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract LiNiPO4 (working at ~5.1 V) shows potential advantages in the competition of cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) because of high energy density. However, the high‐voltage electrolyte developed can only remain relatively stable in the range of less than 4.8 V, so the operating voltage of LiNiPO4 needs to be adjusted to smaller to better exploit its high‐voltage advantages. To regulate the operating voltage of LiNiPO4 while ensuring the relative stability of its electrochemical properties, in this work, all the 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals (TMs) are, respectively, doped into the Ni site of LiNiPO4 to screen out the doped models with excellent electrochemical performance. In particular, the changes in lattice structure, electronic properties, formation energy, mechanical properties, anisotropy, and working voltage were used as screening criteria. By considering the above screening criteria, the Cr‐ and Fe‐doped LiNiPO4 with open circuit voltage ~4.7 and ~4.8 V are considered to have leading performance and can be used for applicable high‐voltage LIBs. The screening results of this work can provide an overall understanding of the doping of LiNiPO4 by TMs and have advanced a theoretical idea for the design of new high‐voltage LIBs cathode materials.

The diurnal variation characteristics of raindrop size distribution (RSD) in the Ili River Valley are investigated in this study, using the RSD data from May to September during 2020-2021 collected by a Parsivel2 disdrometer in Zhaosu. Significant diurnal variations (02–07, 08–13, 14–19, and 20-01 local standard time (LST)) of precipitation and RSD in Zhaosu are revealed during the rainy seasons. Precipitation mainly occurs in the late afternoon and early evening. A higher concentration of small raindrops is observed in the morning, whereas more mid-size and large raindrops are observed in the afternoon. The RSD exhibits diurnal differences between different rainfall rate classes; the diurnal difference of RSD is more pronounced in the case of high rainfall rates. Stratiform precipitation can occur at any time of the day, yet convective precipitation mainly occurs during the late afternoon and early evening. The RSD of stratiform rainfall shows a similar distribution over the four time periods. For convective rainfall, the concentration of small raindrops is the highest (lowest) over 02–07 (14–19) LST, while the highest (lowest) concentration of medium and large drops is observed over 14–19 (02–07) LST. Convective rain in the Ili River Valley over 14–19 LST can be characterized as the continental convective cluster, while in the rest time of the day, it is neither in the maritime cluster nor in the continental cluster. The empirical relationships between the radar reflectivity factor and rainfall rate (Z-R) for stratiform and convective rain types are also derived. The purpose of this study is to advance our understanding of precipitation microphysics in arid mountainous region.

The DC mechanical switch is connected in series with the superconducting magnet in the quench protection system. As the main switch that carries the magnet current for a long time, the temperature of its conductive unit, especially the contact part, inevitably increases significantly during operation. It is necessary to design a water-cooled structure to control the temperature rise. This article introduces the structural design of the conductive unit of the DC mechanical switch for the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology quench protection system and uses a combination of theoretical calculation, thermal-electrical coupling simulation, and Fluent simulation to analyze the thermal stability characteristics at a current level of 100 kA. By comparing and studying the temperature rise characteristics of switches under different cooling paths, diameters of water-cooling pipe, and water flow rates, a design basis is provided for determining a 15 mm diameter “∏” shaped cooling water path structure for the mechanical switch. The DC mechanical switch water-cooled structure designed in this article is expected to effectively control the temperature rise level of the contact.

The DC vacuum circuit breaker plays an important role in the quench protection system of the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) project. The study of the operating characteristics of vacuum circuit breakers can effectively improve breaking reliability. This article introduces the design and basis of the series double break DC vacuum circuit breaker for the CRAFT quench protection system. It adopts the electromagnetic repulsion driving method to ensure rapid action and the operating mechanism design to ensure the synchronization of the double break action. A magnetic shielding setting is proposed through simulation calculations to solve the uniformity of magnetic induction strength between breaks. Combining the test data of action characteristics with the theory of optimal opening distance for current zero crossing, a DC breaking platform for the vacuum circuit breaker was designed, and control strategies were determined, thus completing the 100 kA DC breaking experiment. The vacuum circuit breaker studied in this article meets the technical requirements of the CRAFT quench protection system and provides experience and experimental data for the design of high-current vacuum circuit breakers.

Abstract Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) was built to demonstrate high-power, long-pulse operations under fusion-relevant conditions, with major radius R = 1.9 m, minor radius a = 0.5 m, and design pulse length up to 1000s. It has an ITER-like D-shaped cross-section with two symmetric divertors at the top and bottom, accommodating both single null and double null divertor configurations. EAST construction was started in 2000, and its first plasma was successfully obtained in 2006. In the past 15 years, plasma-facing components, plasma heating, diagnostics, and other systems have been upgraded step by step to meet its mission on exploring of the scientific and technological bases for fusion reactors and studying the physics and engineering technology issues with long pulse steady-state operation. An advanced steady-state plasma operation scenario has been developed, and plasma parameters were greatly improved. Meanwhile, front physics on the magnetic confinement plasmas have been systemically investigated and lots of fruitful results were realized, covering transport and confinement, MHD stabilities, pedestal physics, divertor and scrap-off layer (SOL) physics, and energetic particle physics. This brief review of EAST on engineering upgrading, stand-steady operation scenario development, and plasma physics investigation would be useful for the reference on construction and operation of a superconducting tokamak, such as ITER and future fusion reactor.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials exhibiting stimuli responsive reversible changes in optical properties show great potential in diverse optoelectronic fields but a lack of mechanistic understanding limits their development. Here, the authors prepare a series of RTP polymers by incorporating phosphorescent rotors into polymer backbones and demonstrate colortunable persistent luminescence upon excitation at different wavelengths

For the sake of deriving the signature frequencies of the composite malfunctions of broken and worn teeth of gearbox, the essay raised a method on account of local mean decomposition and Hilbert demodulation to diagnose gearbox composite fault. The local mean decomposition translates a complicated multi-component AM-FM signal into several PF elements with certain physical significance. Every PF component can be approximately regarded as a simplex component AM-FM signal. Using correlation coefficient method, the Hilbert envelope demodulation spectrum is analyzed by selecting the PF component which is strongly relevant to the incipient composite malfunction signal, and the malfunction signature frequency is identified from the demodulation spectrum. Through analyzing the emulation signal and the vibration signal of the actual gear box broken-wear complex fault, and compared with EMD, it is shown that the means can effectually discern the malfunction characteristic frequency in the composite fault signal.

Developing cryogenic structural materials with high strength and toughness is a challenge for the high-field superconducting magnet of the future fusion reactor. 0.2% proof stress should be over 1500 MPa and the fracture toughness KIC should be better than 130 MPa·m1/2 at 4.2 K for future cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) jackets. Thus the cryogenic structural materials of modified 316LN, JK2LB, Incoloy 908, and JJ1 developed by ITER do not meet the requirements. Based on Nitronic 50 (N50) super-austenitic stainless steel material, the modified N50 (N50H) developed in China shows excellent low-temperature mechanical properties by completely eliminating δ ferrite and strictly controlling the carbon content of the alloy. Meanwhile, the jackets of CICC were prepared with N50H material for the first time, and some R&D work has been done. The N50H jackets have been compacted to final dimensions, bent to a radius of r = 2000 mm, straightened, and aging treated. The yield strength of N50H circle-in-square jackets is greater than 1550 MPa, and the fracture toughness KIC is better than 150 MPa·m1/2 at 4.2 K. The fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) of the N50H jacket is lower than that of the modified 316LN, JK2LB and close to Incoloy 908. This study will present experimental data of modified 316LN, JK2LB, Incoloy 908, JJ1, and N50H. Moreover, this paper discusses the feasibility of N50H as a high-magnetic field cryogenic structural material for next-generation fusion reactors.

A severe convective weather event occurred in the Arksu area of Xinjiang on 7 June 2017. In this event, two α-mesoscale convection systems (MCS) and their merging and development caused gale, hailstorm, and short-time heavy precipitation at several stations. The objective of this study is to determine the distribution characteristics of cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning and its relationship with cloud top brightness temperature (TBB) and the development of radar echo and convective system in this event, and to deepen the understanding of the characteristics of CG lightning activity. Using the lightning locating data over Xinjiang, the TBB data from FY-4A, the Doppler weather radar data, and other data, we conducted an analysis of the characteristics of CG lightning activity during this event. The results show that (1) the CG lightning activity concentrates on the warm advection side of the low-level shear line due to the obviously wetter lower and middle troposphere and the stability and continuance of the mesoscale shear line in the lower troposphere. (2) During the event, the CG lightning is mainly negative CG lightning, and its intensity is higher in the east and lower in the west of the Arksu area. There is a certain negative correlation between the CG lightning intensity and the CG lighting density. The large-scale strong wind near the ground has a strong linear correlation with the leap of CG lightning frequency and the decreasing of positive CG lightning proportion. (3) Most of CG lightning distributes in the areas where TBB is less than or equal to -40℃. The frequency of CG has positive and negative correlations with the cloud cluster areas with TBB ≤ -40℃ and the TBB minimum value, respectively. (4) During the period affected by MCS, most of the negative and positive CG lightning occur in the echo areas of 6-20 dBz and 11-15 dBz, respectively. Both the generation and development and the mature stages of convection, the peak value of vertical integrated liquid water content (VIL) appears 12-20 min earlier than the sharp increasing of CG lightning frequency. There are positive and negative correlations between CG lightning frequency and echo top height at the generation and development and the mature stages of convection, respectively.

The Central Asian vortex is a cut-off vortex system with regional characteristics formed under the background of arid climate and unique geographical structure in Central Asia. It has an important impact on the weather and climate in Xinjiang, and even the weather and climate in the Middle East of China. Since 1960s, Chinese meteorologists have conducted preliminary research on its synoptic characteristics. Until 2000, with the continuous enrichment of observation data and the development of meteorological theory, Chinese meteorologists have conducted in-depth research on its definition, classification, activity characteristics, formation mechanism and its impacts on heavy precipitation in Xinjiang. This study reviews and summarizes the research on the Central Asian vortex system and its influence mechanism on precipitation in Xinjiang in recent 20 years. This study also reviews the synoptic condition and water vapor characteristics of typical rainstorm weather, the mesoscale system related to rainstorm and short-term heavy rainfall, and the synergy of rainstorm multi-scale weather system under the background of the Central Asian vortex, and puts forward the scientific problems that need to be further studied in the end.

Plasma electron density is a crucial parameter in plasma studies. Accurately inverting the plasma electron density profile is vital for plasma control experiments and the investigation of plasma physical mechanisms. This paper proposes an integrated data analysis (IDA) method based on Bayesian inference, which integrates polarimetric interferometry, hydrogen cyanide laser interferometer, and microwave reflectometer diagnostics for inverting the plasma electron density profile. To enhance inversion accuracy, a Gaussian prior probability of the non-stationary hyperparameter is used. This prior probability effectively simulates situations where there is a large plasma electron density gradient in the pedestal, especially under the condition of high-confinement mode discharge. Compared to the use of Gaussian prior probability for the stationary hyperparameter, the proposed IDA method based on the non-stationary hyperparameter prior probability achieves higher inversion accuracy.

One of the main challenges in developing effective control strategies for the magnetic control system in tokamaks has been the difficulty in obtaining the last closed-flux surface (LCFS) evolution results from control commands. We have developed a data-driven model that combines a predictive model and a surrogate model for physics simulation programs. This model is capable of predicting the LCFS without relying on physical simulation codes. Addressing the data characteristics of LCFS, we have proposed a specialized discretization approach to achieve dimensionality reduction. Furthermore, we have excluding the control references, the model can be seamlessly integrated into the control system, providing real-time LCFS prediction. Following comprehensive testing and multifaceted evaluation, our model has demonstrated highly satisfactory results of 95% or above, meeting practical requirements.

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β _P has been significantly extended ( H _98y2 > 1.3, β _P ∼ 4.0, β _N ∼ 2.4 and n _e / n _GW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q _95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. The Sanmenxia Basin, located on the southeastern margin of the Shanxi rift and filled with Cretaceous-Paleogene fluvial and lacustrine sediments, is a faulted basin bounded by a series of normal strike-slip faults. This provides a valuable opportunity to investigate the early tectonic deformation in the Fenwei graben. In this study, we report an integrated rock magnetism and AMS analysis of two sections from the Sanmenxia Basin spanning an interval from the Late Cretaceous to the Eocene. The rock magnetic results demonstrate that magnetite and hematite are the main magnetic carriers of remanence, and paramagnetic minerals and hematite are major contributors to the AMS in both sections of the Sanmenxia Basin. Together with the relatively low-corrected anisotropy values, the tightly grouped minimum principal axes are almost perpendicular to the bedding plane, and the well-defined magnetic lineation is generally parallel to the bedding trend, indicating that the primary sedimentary fabrics in the Sanmenxia Basin were overprinted by the initial deformation. The NW–SE magnetic lineation denotes the NW–SE stretching during the Late Cretaceous-Eocene. The stretching process may have been controlled by the Indian-Eurasian convergence and/or the subduction of the western Pacific plate.

Plant-associated microorganisms are believed to be part of the so-called extended plant phenotypes, affecting plant growth and health. Understanding how plant-associated microorganisms respond to pathogen invasion is crucial to controlling plant diseases through microbiome manipulation. In this study, healthy and diseased (bacterial wilt disease, BWD) tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants were harvested, and variations in the rhizosphere and root endosphere microbial communities were subsequently investigated using amplicon and shotgun metagenome sequencing. BWD led to a significant increase in rhizosphere bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere but reduced bacterial diversity in the root endosphere. The ecological null model indicated that BWD enhanced the bacterial deterministic processes in both the rhizosphere and root endosphere. Network analysis showed that microbial co-occurrence complexity was increased in BWD-infected plants. Moreover, higher universal ecological dynamics of microbial communities were observed in the diseased rhizosphere. Metagenomic analysis revealed the enrichment of more functional gene pathways in the infected rhizosphere. More importantly, when tomato plants were infected with BWD, some plant-harmful pathways such as quorum sensing were significantly enriched, while some plant-beneficial pathways such as streptomycin biosynthesis were depleted. These findings broaden the understanding of plant–microbiome interactions and provide new clues to the underlying mechanism behind the interaction between the plant microbiome and BWD.

To excite stronger magnetic fields, high temperature superconducting (HTS) insert coils are planned for the next generation central solenoid magnet for China fusion engineering test reactor (CFETR). The development of high strength and high toughness jacket has become one of the challenges in the application of high-field cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC). 0.2 % proof stress of jacket should be over 1500 MPa at 4.2 K for HTS conductors, thus 316LN and JK2LB jackets developed by ITER do not meet the requirements. Nitronic 50 (N50) super-austenitic stainless steel material has great optimization potential for the development of jacket. Based on the modified N50 material, China prepared the CICC jacket and has done some R&D work on the N50 jacket. The entire process of ReBCO CICC preparation, including extrusion, bending and straightening, was simulated using the N50 stainless steel jacket. The N50 circle-in-square jackets prepared in China showed a yield strength greater than 1600 MPa and a fracture toughness KIC better than 110 MPa·m1/2 after cold work at 4.2 K. This paper will focus on the preparation, cold work processing and performance test of the N50 jacket. This study will present experimental data and discuss the feasibility of modified N50 as a high-magnetic field jacket material for next-generation fusion reactors.

The diurnal variation characteristics and basic statistical features of summer precipitation (from June to August) in the Ili region from 2015 to 2019 were investigated based on 4 km resolution Weather Research and Forecasting model simulation data from Nanjing University (WRF_NJU). The results show that the overall diurnal variation characteristics of precipitation (DVCP) reflected by the WRF_NJU data were consistent with respect to the observations and reanalysis data. The total precipitation pattern exhibited high (low) values on the east (west), with higher (lower) values over the mountainous (valley) area. Hourly precipitation amount (PA), precipitation frequency (PF), and precipitation intensity (PI) show similar diurnal variation characteristics, with peaks occurring at around 1700 LST in the mountainous area and around 2000 LST in valleys. Furthermore, moderate to intense precipitation contributes up to 87.88% of the total precipitation. The peaks in the mountainous area occur earlier than the valleys, while the peaks in western part of the valleys occur earlier than the eastern part. The PA peaks over the valleys and slopes occurred from the evening to early morning and from the afternoon to evening, respectively. In addition, the rotated empirical orthogonal function (REOF) analysis implied that the DVCP exhibits distinct differences between mountainous and valleys, and peak precipitation occurs during the evening in basin– and wedge–shaped areas, while the mountain peaks and foothill regions exhibit semi–diurnal variation characteristics. Among several basic meteorological factors, the vertical velocity (VV) and water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) provided major contributions to the DVCP in both areas with high and low coefficients of variation, and the WVMR (VV) probably played a more significant role in mountainous (valleys) areas.

The Laser interferometer plays an important role in the field of geometrics for large-size measuring applications. Its linear displacement error can be traced from indoor large-scale standard devices. However, the measuring range of the indoor large-scale standard device is too limited to meet the full range measurement of the laser interferometer. So, the lack of accuracy of the results is one of the key issues of laser interferometers. To solve this problem, the corner reflector is used to extend the range of indoor large-scale standard devices, which meet the indication errors in the effective measuring range of the laser interferometer. The range-extension method not only doubles the effective measuring range, but also provides a way to trace the source of other large-size measuring instruments. This work proposes a significant solution to the field of length measurement.

Micro-layer evaporation is one of the main phase change mechanisms in nucleate pool boiling. However, the influence of pressure on micro-layer evaporation remains unclarified. The objective of this study is to establish an approach to calculate micro-layer evaporation at high pressure. Here, an analytical solution of the governing equations is applied to derive a semi-empirical correlation for the initial micro-layer thickness δ0. After the calibration with measurement under atmospheric pressure, δ0 becomes a function of fluid properties. A nucleation sites tracking method is then implanted in the micro-layer evaporation system for multi-bubble cases. In this study, two single bubble growing cases are employed to validate our initial micro-layer thickness model at high pressure (1.91 MPa, 4.47 MPa). The simulated bubble radius profiles show similar trends with experimental data. Furthermore, the entire multi-bubble evaporation system is also validated against a pool boiling experiment at high pressure (0.51 MPa). The simulated wall superheat is consistent with reported data, with the minimum deviation of about 20%. The contribution of evaporation during nucleate boiling from both the macro and micro region is demonstrated at various operating conditions. Micro-layer supplies about 70% vapor in nucleate pool boiling at 0.51 MPa.

The extreme precipitation threshold is fundamental to extreme precipitation research, directly affecting the cognition of extreme characteristics. Based on the daily precipitation data of 62 meteorological stations from 1985 to 2005, this study uses parametric and non-parametric approaches to determine the extreme precipitation threshold in Central Asia, analyzes the statistics and spatial distribution of different threshold criteria, and discusses the trend of extreme precipitation. The capability of the grid dataset of APHRODITE and GPCC in the extreme precipitation analysis in Central Asia is evaluated from the threshold perspective. The results are as follows: 1) Contrary to the parametric approach, the threshold determined by the percentile indices in the warm season is slightly higher than in the cold season. The mean threshold of the warm (cold) season in Central Asia is defined by the 95th percentile index and the 10-year return period, which are 14.0 mm (13.5 mm) and 24.2 mm (25.7 mm), respectively. 2) The spatial distribution of extreme precipitation threshold in Central Asia is higher in the southeast and lower in the north during the cold season; In the warm season, it is high in the north and southwest and low in the center. 3) Although both APHRODITE and GPCC datasets can basically reproduce the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation threshold, they underestimate the magnitude of the threshold, especially APHRODITE. 4) There is no obvious extreme precipitation trend in Central Asia during the study period. Furthermore, the trend in characteristics of extreme precipitation based on different thresholds shows a consistent trend in time but not spatially. We suggest that the threshold selection should adjust the balance between sufficient samples and extreme values according to actual conditions. The results of this study can provide a reference for extreme precipitation threshold criteria under specific application conditions in Central Asia.

In order to improve the understanding of the microphysical characteristics of raindrop size distribution (DSD) under different rainfall rates (R) classes, and broaden the knowledge of the impact of radar wavelengths and R classes on the QPE of dual-polarization radars in the Tianshan Mountains, a typical arid area in China, we investigated the microphysical characteristics of DSD across R classes and dual-polarimetric radar QPE relationships across radar wavelengths and R classes, based on the DSD data from a PARSIVEL2 disdrometer at Zhaosu in the Tianshan Mountains during the summers of 2020 and 2021. As the R class increased, the DSD became wider and flatter. The mean value of the mass-weighted mean diameters (Dm) increased, while the mean value of logarithm normalized intercept parameters (log10 Nw) decreased after increasing from C1 to C3, as the R class increased. The largest contributions to R and the radar reflectivity factor from large raindrops (diameter > 3 mm) accounted for approximately 50% and 97%, respectively, while 84% of the total raindrops were small raindrops (diameter < 1 mm). Dual-polarization radars—horizontal polarization reflectivity (Zh), differential reflectivity (Zdr), and specific differential phase (Kdp)—were retrieved based on the DSD data using the T-matrix scattering method. The DSD-based polarimetric radar QPE relations of a single-parameter (R(Zh), R(Kdp)), and double-parameters (R(Zh,Zdr), R(Kdp,Zdr)) on the S-, C-, and X-bands were derived and evaluated. Overall, the performance of the R(Kdp) (R(Kdp,Zdr)) scheme was better than that of R(Zh) (R(Zh,Zdr)) for the QPE in the three bands. Furthermore, we have for the first time confirmed and quantified the performance differences in the QPE relationship of dual-polarization radars under different schemes, radar wavelengths, and R classes in typical arid areas of China. Therefore, selecting an appropriate dual-polarization radar band and QPE scheme for different R classes is necessary to improve the QPE ability compared with an independent scheme under all R classes.

Abstract The microphysical processes of cloud and precipitation in the Tianshan Mountains still remain unclear due to the complex terrain and the lack of ground‐based observational data. In this study, the characteristics of summer raindrop size distribution (RSD) in the western and central Tianshan Mountains of China were investigated in 2020 and 2021. According to the average raindrop spectra, the RSD characteristics exhibit significant differences that the concentration of medium and large particles is relatively higher at Zhaosu than that at Tianchi. Weak precipitation prevails in the Tianshan Mountains most of the time, yet moderate rainfall and heavy rainfall have a great impact on the accumulated rainfall amount. For each rainfall rate class, raindrops of diameter less than 0.75mm have a lower concentration and raindrops of diameter greater than 3 mm have a higher concentration at Zhaosu as compared to those at Tianchi. Compared with Tianchi, Zhaosu has a larger mass‐weighted mean diameter (Dm) and a lower normalized intercept parameter (log10Nw). Compared with the classical convective spectrum, the RSDs at both Zhaosu and Tianchi are similar to the continental convective cluster. The relationships between the shape and slope (μ–Λ), and radar reflectivity and rainfall rate (Z–R) exhibit a significant difference in the western and central Tianshan Mountains of China.

Iris recognition has been considered as one of the most accurate and reliable biometric technologies, and it is widely used in security applications. Iris segmentation and iris localization, as important preprocessing tasks for iris biometrics, jointly determine the valid iris part of the input eye image; however, iris images that have been captured in user non-cooperative and visible illumination environments often suffer from adverse noise (e.g., light reflection, blurring, and glasses occlusion), which challenges many existing segmentation-based parameter-fitting localization methods. To address this problem, we propose a novel double-center-based end-to-end iris localization and segmentation network. Different from many previous iris localization methods, which use massive post-process methods (e.g., integro-differential operator-based or circular Hough transforms-based) on iris or contour mask to fit the inner and outer circles, our method directly predicts the inner and outer circles of the iris on the feature map. In our method, an anchor-free center-based double-circle iris-localization network and an iris mask segmentation module are designed to directly detect the circle boundary of the pupil and iris, and segment the iris region in an end-to-end framework. To facilitate efficient training, we propose a concentric sampling strategy according to the center distribution of the inner and outer iris circles. Extensive experiments on the four challenging iris data sets show that our method achieves excellent iris-localization performance; in particular, it achieves 84.02% box IoU and 89.15% mask IoU on NICE-II. On the three sub-datasets of MICHE, our method achieves 74.06% average box IoU, surpassing the existing methods by 4.64%.

As urbanization increases, the city continues to interfere with an already-fragile oasis eco-environment in arid areas. This paper proposes a synthesised evaluation index system regarding the urbanization level from the perspectives of demographic, economic, spatial, and social urbanization. The eco-environment was characterised in terms of its level, endowment, pressure and response. Moreover, a coupling coordination degree model was established with respect to the coordination degree of urbanization and the eco-environment based on panel data of three county-level cities and 14 counties in the Kashgar metropolitan area from 1999 to 2016. The findings show the following: (i) Economic urbanization and the eco-environmental response contributed the most to the urbanization and eco-environmental systems of the Kashgar metropolitan area. (ii) The coordination effects of the urbanization and eco-environmental system in most counties and cities of the Kashgar metropolitan area were classified as the balanced development II 2 subcategory of intermediate uncoordinated development. This overall spatial pattern shows that county-level cities had significantly higher levels of urbanization and eco-environments than did counties. (iii) The double exponential curve between urbanization and the eco-environment was an inverted U-shaped curve. Urbanization had a stress effect on the eco-environment, whereas the eco-environment had a binding effect on urbanization. This study provides a reference for researching the evolutionary relationship between urbanization and the eco-environment in arid areas and provides decisional support for the more harmonious development of humans and nature in the Kashgar metropolitan area.

Abstract Lithium (Li) metal is a promising anode for high-performance secondary lithium batteries with high energy density due to its highest theoretical specific capacity and lowest electrochemical potential among anode materials. However, the dendritic growth and detrimental reactions with electrolyte during Li plating raise safety concerns and lead to premature failure. Herein, we report that a homogeneous nanocomposite protective layer, prepared by uniformly dispersing AlPO4 nanoparticles into the vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene matrix, can effectively prevent dendrite growth and lead to superior cycling performance due to synergistic influence of homogeneous Li plating and electronic insulation of polymeric layer. The results reveal that the protected Li anode is able to sustain repeated Li plating/stripping for > 750 cycles under a high current density of 3 mA cm−2 and a renders a practical specific capacity of 2 mAh cm−2. Moreover, full-cell Li-ion battery is constructed by using LiFePO4 and protected Li as a cathode and anode, respectively, rendering a stable capacity after 400 charge/discharge cycles. The current work presents a promising approach to stabilize Li metal anodes for next-generation Li secondary batteries.

During excitation and demagnetization phase for the superconducting magnet, in dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter based power supply, a dc bias may occur in high-frequency transformer and thus lead to the faults. In this paper, an improved transient extend-phase-shift (TEPS) control strategy is proposed to suppress the dc bias without any additional hardware. Unlike the traditional extend-phase-shift (EPS) strategy, the voltages of the transformer are asymmetrical for half a period after changing phase-shift and then remain symmetrical. This makes it take half a switching period for the current of transformer to reach the steady state, and then eliminates the dc bias. The experiment verifies the performance on dc bias suppression. This method provides a good theoretical and experimental basis for the EPS DAB DC-DC converter to realize the optimal control for excitation and demagnetization system in high-field superconducting magnet power supply (SMPS).

In the published paper titled ‘EAST discharge prediction without integrating simulation results’ (2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 126060), figure 5 used the wrong plot, and is not matched with table 3. We used the plot discussed with referees, the case when we do not use IC 1 as a proxy. This corrigendum provides the correct plot for figure 5 .

Tokamaks allow to confine fusion plasma with magnetic fields. The prediction/reconstruction of the last closed-flux surface (LCFS) is one of the primary challenges in the control of the magnetic configuration. The evolution in time of the LCFS is determined by the interaction between the actuator coils and the internal tokamak plasma. This task requires real-time capable tools to deal with high-dimensional data and high resolution at same time, where the interaction between a wide range of input actuator coils with internal plasma state responses adds an additional layer of complexity. In this work, we present the application of a novel state-of-the-art machine learning model to LCFS reconstruction in an experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) that learns automatically from the experimental data of EAST. This architecture allows not only offline simulation and testing of a particular control strategy but can also be embedded in a real-time control system for online magnetic equilibrium reconstruction and prediction. In real-time modeling tests, our approach achieves very high accuracies, with an average similarity of over 99% in the LCFS reconstruction of the entire discharge process.

To understand the triggering conditions of snowmelt floods in northern Xinjiang, China, the diurnal evolution and altitude dependence characteristics of spring temperature and relative humidity (RH) are investigated, particularly placing emphasis on continuous warming process, mainly based on the data collected from the densely sounding experiment at Altay Station in spring 2021. The results show that the mean maximum and minimum temperature respectively occur at nightfall and sunrise, the mean RH below 2,000 m is the highest at sunrise and the lowest at nightfall, and the mean RH above 5,000 m is the highest at sunrise and the lowest at midday. The mean RH value climbs up first but goes down later, and the largest mean RH is within the height range of 2,500–5,000 m. The radiation inversion with the depth of 660 m tends to occur frequently at midnight and around sunrise, and it does not exist when the continuous warming process sets out but gradually develops with the advancing process. During the continuous warming processes, there exists an unsynchronized warming from the ground to the upper air. The upper-air warming lags behind that on the ground for 2–5 d, and then it continues the trend. Below 2,000 m, accompany with the advance of the warming processes, the RH keeps at relatively low level and changes small along height after the first 2–3 days, when the max RH drop swiftly from 80%–98% to less than 25% and tend to be consistent at the four observation times. The trough and ridge systems responsible for the continuous warming processes in early and middle spring are mainly the deep long-wave system, but in the middle and late spring, the adjustment speed of the trough and ridge systems are accelerated and more short-wave activities fuel the continuous warming.

Improving contour accuracy is one of the significant goals of industrial machining. This paper proposes a contour error estimation and compensation algorithm for five-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools based on modified numerical control (NC) codes. The expected path analyzed by NC data and the actual trajectory collected by sensors are spatially mapped by the hidden Markov model (HMM). Next, an evaluation function that hybrids the tool tip position and tool orientation change trend is proposed as the index of contour error estimation. Finally, spatial iterative learning control (ILC) is used to compensate the contour error, and high-precision machining instructions are obtained after multiple iterations. Experiments with different trajectories are performed on a five-axis platform to verify the proposed algorithm’s effectiveness. The results show that the proposed algorithm without using planned trajectories, has the same good control effect as traditional methods, which must know the planning trajectory for simple trajectories. At the same time, the method proposed in this paper has better performance than existing algorithms based on tool tip position nearest principle at sharp corners. In conclusion, on the basis of not depending on the planning trajectories, this method has a better compensation effect for the overall accuracy of trajectories and is easier to implement in industrial applications.

Understanding the precipitation variability and extreme precipitation over arid Central Asia (CA) has largely been hampered by the lack of daily precipitation observations. The gridded precipitation datasets over CA are large discrepancies. Here, three gauge-based gridded daily precipitation products from Asian Precipitation Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation (APHRODITE), Global Precipitation Climatology Center (GPCC), and Climate Prediction Center Based Analysis of Global Daily Precipitation (CPC_global) were assessed and compared with 49 rain gauge daily observations precipitation (OBS) from January 1985 to December 2015 using different time-scales over CA and different climate regimes, specifically Northern CA with temperate continental climate (NCA), Southwestern CA with dry arid desert climate (SWCA), and Southeastern CA with Mediterranean continental climate (SECA). Four accuracy indices [correlation coefficient (R), Bias, root mean square error (RMSE), and relative bias (RBias)] were employed to evaluate the performance of the three products in depicting the spatiotemporal features of precipitation variation over CA at multiple time scales (including daily, monthly, seasonal, and yearly). The mean annual and daily precipitation of OBS and three gridded products exhibit the trend of a gradual precipitation decreased from SECA to NCA and SWCA. The best overall performance was obtained for APHRODITE and GPCC for daily and annual time-scale, whereas CPC shows noticeable underestimation precipitation in SECA. The monthly precipitation depicted distinct features with a bimodal pattern with a peak in March and another in December, include the SECA and SWCA regions. In contrast, precipitation was concentrated in summer with the peak in July over the NCA region. At monthly scale terms, APHRODITE was more accurate in the wet seasons (winter and spring months) in SWCA and SECA. Additionally, GPCC has fairly better capability in summer months in NCA. Considering the spatial distribution, the bias variability was largerly in mountainous areas than in the plains. Temporally, the bias largerly in the dry seasons than in the wet seasons. At the interannual variability scale, GPCC was capable of qualitatively increasing the CA (NCA and SECA) precipitation during the last 21 years, while APHRODITE underestimated the trends. The CPC overestimated the precipitation trends over all regions. This study can serve as a reference for selecting daily precipitation products with low densities of stations, complex topographies, and similar climatic regions.

The Bogda Range (hereafter referred to as the Bogda) is located in the Eastern Tianshan. Interpreting its tectono-thermal history is critical to understanding the intra-continental evolution of the Tianshan. In this study, we report new apatite fission track data from the late Paleozoic–Mesozoic sedimentary rocks in the northern Bogda and the Late Paleozoic granites in the southern Bogda to investigate the exhumation history of the Bogda. Apatite fission track ages dominantly range from the Jurassic to earliest Cenozoic (~143–61 Ma), except for one siliciclastic sample from the Early Permian strata with an older age of ~251 Ma. Thermal history modeling, together with detrital apatite fission track age peaks, reveal that the Bogda underwent three episodes of cooling during the Late Triassic, the Late Cretaceous, and the Late Miocene. The Late Triassic rapid cooling may represent the initial building of the Bogda, which is probably related to the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. During the Late Cretaceous, the Bogda may have experienced a moderate exhumation, which was possibly triggered by the extensive tectonic extension in the central–eastern Asian regime during the Cretaceous. The Late Miocene rapid cooling may be a response to the rapid uplift of the whole Tianshan, due to the far-field effect of the continuous India–Eurasia collision since the beginning of the Cenozoic.

As more complex curves are used in current productions, curve speed planning has become a key technique to overcome the bottleneck of high-speed and high-precision computerized numerical control (CNC) systems. This paper first establishes the model of particle velocity, acceleration, and jerks in the Cartesian coordinate system, and then improves the uniaxial performance limit algorithm. We set up a real-time speed planning process of spline curves, design an S-model look-ahead algorithm, simplify the S-model speed planning algorithm, and achieve real-time non-uniform rational B-splines (NUBRS) curve S-model speed planning based on uniaxial performance limitation. The simulation results show that all the actual interpolation velocity, acceleration, and jerk under the proposed method meet the preset single-axis limit. The experimental results show that the tracking performance under the proposed method has been significantly improved compared with that under the small line segments method. Compared with the NUBRS curve trapezoidal model speed planning, the vibration spikes during machining can be eliminated.

Taking metropolitan areas as space carriers has become the engine of the Chinese government in its promotion of high-quality development, and this has also become an important measure by which to balance regional development. We used Zipf’s law and the gravity model to study the urban scale distribution characteristics of the Kashgar Metropolitan Area (KMA) in this paper. We also constructed a spatial structure judgment vector for the KMA and put forward the development objectives of different circles. The findings show the following: (1) large cities have a high primacy of development, while small and medium-sized cities are underdeveloped. At present, the KMA is a concentrated monocentric-pattern metropolitan area, with Kashgar City as its core city. (2) The urban built-up area of Kashgar City is expanding to the east and south, where it has broken through the administrative boundary and become integrated with the urban built-up area of Shule County. The spatial structure characteristics of the KMA have been further clarified. The KMA forms three circles: core, middle, and outer. (3) Tumxuk City, Bachu County, Yecheng County, Shache County, and other counties are far from the core city and cannot be connected with Kashgar, but they are closely related to the surrounding cities, forming the Bachu–Tumxuk Urban Group and the Shache–Zepu–Yecheng Urban Group. This study contributes to the understanding of the characteristics of urban scale distribution and the spatial structure of metropolitan areas in arid regions, as well as providing guidance for the formulation of policies for the development of different circles in the KMA.

In order to identify the nonlinear nonstationary pitting-wear fault signal of gears in gearbox, a new method of composite fault diagnosis for gearbox is proposed, which combines empirical mode decomposition with improved variational mode decomposition. Aiming at the problem of false modes in the results of empirical mode decomposition when processing signals, the energy method is used to eliminate and update the mode components, and the correlation coefficient method is used to calculate the correlation between the updated mode components and the original signal. The components with strong correlation are selected to form the combined mode components to weaken the noise and improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Aiming at the problem that variational mode decomposition method needs to manually determine the number of mode components k and the penalty factor α during signal decomposition, a combination of envelope spectral entropy and waveform method is proposed to determine the optimal parameter combination. By analyzing the pitting-wear composite fault vibration signals of gears in the gearbox and the normal signals of the gearbox, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified, and a comparative analysis with the empirical mode decomposition method is performed to highlight the superiority of the proposed method.

Raindrop size distribution (DSD) is of great significance for understanding the microphysical process of rainfall and the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). However, in the past, there was a lack of relevant research on Xinjiang in the arid region of northwest China. In this study, the rainy season data collected by the disdrometer in the Yining area of Xinjiang were used for more than two years, and the characteristics of DSDs for all samples, for two rain types (convective and stratiform), and for six different rain rates were studied. The results showed that nearly 70% of the total samples had a rainfall rate of less than 1 mm·h−1, the convective rain was neither continental nor maritime, and there was a clear boundary between convective rain and stratiform rain in terms of the scattergram of the standardized intercept parameter (log10Nw) versus the mass-weighted average diameter (Dm). When the raindrop diameter was less than 0.7 mm, DSDs of the two rainfalls basically coincided, while when the raindrop diameter was greater than 0.7 mm, DSDs of convective rainfall were located above the stratiform rain. As the rainfall rate increased, Dm increased, while log10Nw first increased and then decreased. In addition, we deduced the Z−R (radar reflectivity-rain rate) relationship and μ−Λ relationship (shape parameter-slope parameter of the gamma DSDs) suitable for the Yining area. These conclusions are conducive to strengthening the understanding of rainfall microphysical processes in arid regions and improving the ability of QPE in arid regions.

Soil microbial communities are closely associated with ecosystem functions. However, unravelling the complex nature of the microbial world and successfully utilizing all positive interactions for multipurpose environmental benefits is still a major challenge. Here, we describe the soil bacterial communities in different niches of healthy and diseased tomatoes under natural conditions. A higher abundance of the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum and lower bacterial diversity were observed in the disease samples. The healthy tomato rhizosphere harbored more plant-beneficial microbes, including Bacillus and Streptomyces. Also, the co-occurrence network in the healthy rhizosphere samples was more complicated, so as to better adapt to the soil-borne pathogen invasion. Both the beta nearest-taxon-index (βNTI) and normalized stochasticity ratio (NST) analyses demonstrated that healthy rhizosphere communities were less phylogenetically clustered and mainly dominated by dispersal limitation, while homogeneous selection was the major assembly process driving the rhizosphere community of diseased samples. The results obtained with community assembly methods and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that healthy rhizosphere bacterial communities possessed potentially broader environmental stress (soil-borne pathogen stress) adaptability compared with diseased rhizosphere bacterial communities. In conclusion, this study contributed to widening our understanding of the potential mechanisms of soil bacterial community composition and assembly responding to soil-borne pathogen invasion.

Plants are inhabited by millions of parasitic, commensal, and mutualistic microorganisms that coexist in complex ecological communities, and profoundly affect the plant’s productivity, health, and capacity to cope with environmental stress. Therefore, a better understanding of the rhizosphere microbiome may open a yet untapped avenue for the rational exploitation of beneficial plant–microbe interactions in modern agriculture. Blueberries encompass several wild and cultivated species of shrubs of the genus Vaccinium that are native to North America. They are grown commercially for the production of fruits, which are considered a health food due to the rich content of minerals, trace elements, and phenolic compounds with antioxidant, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite a long history of breeding and extensive commercial use, remarkably little is known about the composition and function of the blueberry root microbiome. To address this gap, we employed molecular approaches to characterize and compare microbial communities inhabiting the roots of rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium virgatum), Darrow’s blueberry (Vaccinium darrowii), and southern highbush blueberry (SHB; an interspecific hybrid of Vaccinium corymbosum and V. darrowii). Our results revealed that these plant species share a common core rhizobiome, but at the same time differ significantly in the diversity, relative abundance, richness, and evenness of multiple groups of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. Although the host signature effects were especially pronounced at the plant species level, we also observed genotype-level variations in the distribution of specific microbial taxa, which suggests that the assembly of the blueberry microbiome is shaped by the plant genotype and modifications associated with the domestication and breeding of members of the Vaccinium genus. We also demonstrated that the studied Vaccinium species differ in the abundance of beneficial rhizobacteria and ericoid mycorrhizal fungi, which play a vital role in their adaptation to soils with low pH and slow turnover of organic matter.
