Introduction: Fine-wool sheep are the most common breed used by the wool industry worldwide. Fine-wool sheep have over a three-fold higher follicle density and a 50% smaller fiber diameter than coarse-wool sheep. Objectives: This study aims to clarify the underlying genetic basis for the denser and finer wool phenotype in fine-wool breeds. Method: Whole-genome sequences of 140 samples, Ovine HD630K SNP array data of 385 samples, including fine, semi-fine, and coarse wool sheep, as well as skin transcriptomes of nine samples were integrated for genomic selection signature analysis. Results: Two loci at keratin 74 (KRT74) and ectodysplasin receptor (EDAR) were revealed. Fine-scale analysis in 250 fine/semi-fine and 198 coarse wool sheep narrowed this association to one C/A missense variant of KRT74 (OAR3:133,486,008, P = 1.02E-67) and one T/C SNP in the regulatory region upstream of EDAR (OAR3:61,927,840, P = 2.50E-43). Hormesis in soil enzymes is well-established, yet the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this novel study, we investigated the effects of low-dose Cd exposure (0, 0.03, 0.3, 3, and 30 mg·kg−1) in farmland soil within a typical constructed wetland environment. We assessed the activities of four soil enzymes (urease (URE), denitrification enzyme (DEA), dehydrogenase (DHA), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)) at varying exposure durations (0 h, 24 h, and 48 h), evaluating hormetic characteristics across these time intervals. Additionally, we determined kinetic parameters, specifically the Michaelis constant (Km) and maximum reaction velocity (Vmax), for these enzymes while examining potential alterations in microbial community structure. Our findings revealed hormesis in all four soil enzymes at 24 h of exposure, with varying stimulus width and maximum hormesis rates. Interestingly, heavy metals did not significantly influence the diversity of soil microbial communities, but they did inhibit the ability of soil microbial communities to secrete extracellular enzymes. This resulted in a reduction in the soil enzyme pool and a consequential shift in overall soil enzyme activities. The conclusion of this study is that low-dose Cd primarily reduced extracellular enzyme secretion by soil microorganisms, leading to a reduction in the size of the soil enzyme pool and thereby inducing hormesis in soil enzyme activities.

The narrow pH application range and lower utilization of ferrous ions (Fe(II)) restrict the application of Fe(II)/persulfate (PS) technology. In this paper, simulated sunlight and citric acid (Cit) as a chelator were introduced in an Fe(II)/PS system to overcome the drawbacks and enhance the degradation of typical antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in secondary wastewater. The degradation kinetics, mechanism, and influence factors of SMX in a sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit/PS system and a sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit system as a comparable system were investigated. The removal efficiency of SMX can reach 71.15% and 85.25% in the sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit system and sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit/PS system with 0.1 mM Fe(II), 0.6 mM Cit, and 1 mM PS. The increase of Fe(II) concentration in both systems proved that sunlight promoted the regeneration of Fe(II) from the ferric ion chelates. However, the Fe(II) concentration decreased after 30 min in the sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit/PS system because of the decomposition of Cit. Radical quencher experiments indicated that SO4·−, ·OH, and O2·− contributed 2.48%, 88.43%, and 6.91% to the removal of SMX, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra also proved the formation of ·OH and O2·−. The degradation of SMX was proposed to proceed via isomerization, cleavage of S–N bond, and hydroxylation. Overall, the sunlight/Fe(II)/Cit/PS process can be used as an advanced treatment technology for antibiotics in municipal wastewater.

Water N-NO3− (mg L−1) pollution is attracting global concern in the face of combating climate change and human health risks. However, there have been comparatively few comprehensively researched studies on water N-NO3− pollution with respect to N-NO3− deposition, soil nitrogen, and land-use changes. We collected a total of 7707 published sampling points on N-NO3− surface and groundwater during flooding and non-flooding seasons during 2000–2020 in China. The types of water N-NO3− pollution (>20) can be categorized as point pollution (ΔTN ≤ 0 or > 1.5) and non-point pollution (0 < ΔTN ≤ 1.5), which were then assessed with respect to soil nitrogen (ΔTN g kg−1) and water N-NO3− changes in this study. We found non-point pollution was concentrated in the Huaihe River Basin and Haihe River Basin with higher urbanization (+6%, +4%), cropland (72%, 45%), nitrogen fertilization (g m−2 yr−1) (>10), and increased wet N-NO3− deposition (WND) (kg ha−1 yr−1) (+4.6, +3). The Haihe River Basin was found to have the highest N-NO3− on its surface (306) and in its groundwater (868) and nitrogen fertilization (32). Point pollution was concentrated in the Songhua and Liaohe River Basin with the highest WND (+7.9) but slow urbanization (+1%). N-NO3− increased during the flooding season compared with the no-flooding season in serious pollution areas. N-NO3− increased in the Liaohe River and middle and low Yangtze River but was reduced in the Weihe River. Therefore, stringent criteria and management, especially during the flooding season are urgently required to mitigate the degree of N-NO3− water pollution that occurs due to intensive agriculture and urbanization with increased N-NO3− deposition.

The unreasonable use of fertilizers is a significant cause of cultivated soil cadmium (Cd) accumulation. Although there is research about the effect of fertilizers on soil cadmium (Cd) accumulation under different crops, soils, and cultivation durations locally and specifically, its relative and determinant factors are seldom comprehensively and comparatively researched and evaluated. We used meta-analysis to analyze the effects of fertilizers (mineral fertilizer N, P, K (NPK) with manure (NPKM), NPK with straw (NPKS), and the mineral fertilizer N (N), NK (NK)), crops, duration, climate, and soil texture on the Chinese soil total and available Cd change during 1987–2022. The results showed that the order of the increased soil total and available Cd change was NPKM (total: 62%–104%, available: 61%–143%) > NPKS (50%–86%, 48%–116%) > NPK (25%–50%, 35%–75%) > NK (5%–19%, 19%–33%) > N (2%–6%, 7%–31%). NPKM and NPKS significantly increased the total Cd under maize (104%, 86%) and available Cd under rice (136%, 116%). Cd changed the fastest with the NPKM cultivation duration for total Cd under maize (slope: 5.9) and available Cd under rice (6.6). The change of the soil total and available Cd had the higher value in the semiarid region, clay soils, lower pH, and long cultivations. The change of the soil total and available Cd were highest (398%, 375%) in the semiarid region for clay loam after 20–25 years of NPKM fertilization, when the pH decreased to the lowest (−1.9). According to the aggregated boosted tree analysis, the fertilizers and duration were the best explanatory variable (>53%) for the soil total and available Cd. In conclusion, the soil Cd could be mitigated through reducing the long–term manure, straw, and P fertilizer content with Cd, and field managements such as liming, wetting, and drying according to the crops, climate, and soil texture.

Highlights Biochar affected phenanthrene mineralization by reducing bioavailability and altering soil bacterial communities. Biochar had different effects on mineralization of phenanthrene with different concentrations in soil. Bioavailability dominated mineralization over bacterial activity in biochar-amended soil with low phenanthrene concentration. Bacterial proliferation rather than bioavailability reduction by biochar regulated high-concentration phenanthrene mineralization.

In the context of intensified global climate change, Taxodium distichum has been attracting attention as an essential wetland plant. Through the literature visualization analysis software CiteSpace, the Spatial Distribution, Journal Distribution, Research Power, research status, and trends of T. distichum. The main conclusions are as follows. 1) The United States and China are the major countries for T. distichum research. The major institutions are Louisiana State University and the US Geological Survey. 2) The popular research areas mainly include growth, response, wetland, forest, climate change, adventitious root, and soil. 3) The research trends are soil and Florida (1992–98), survival (1999–2005), T. distichum (2006–12), salinity (2018–22), and sea-level rise (2020–22). These findings offer the current research status of T. distichum and could provide reference information for scholars in related fields to determine research directions and refine issues.

The ecological effects of antibiotics in surface water have attracted increasing research attention. In this study, we investigated the combined ecotoxicity of erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX) on the microalgae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, and the removal of ERY and ROX during the exposure. The calculated 96-h median effect concentration (EC50) values of ERY, ROX, and their mixture (2:1 w/w) were 7.37, 3.54, and 7.91 mg∙L-1, respectively. However, the predicted EC50 values of ERY+ROX mixture were 5.42 and 1.51 mg∙L-1, based on the concentration addition and independent action models, respectively. This demonstrated the combined toxicity of ERY+ ROX mixture showed an antagonistic effect on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. During the 14-d culture, low-concentration (EC10) treatments with ERY, ROX, and their mixture caused the growth inhibition rate to decrease during the first 12 d and increase slightly at 14 d. Photocatalytic carbon dioxide conversion is a promising method for generating carbon fuels, in which the most important thing is to adjust the catalyst material to improve the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity to conversion products, but it is still very challenging. In order to enhance the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction, it is important to develop an appropriate photocatalyst. The present study focuses on developing a simple and effective hydrothermal reaction treatment to improve the catalytic efficiency of transition metal cobalt (Co) and organophosphonates. Photoexcited charge carriers are separated and transferred efficiently during this treatment, which enhances CO2 chemisorption. Under visible light exposure, the best performing catalyst, CoP-4, showed 2.4 times higher activity than Co3O4 (19.90 μmol h−1 g−1) for reducing CO2 into CO, with rates up to 47.16 μmol h−1 g−1. This approach provides a viable route to enhancing the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction.

Highlights Wood pulp cellulose biochar (WPBC) improved the catalytic performance of g-C3N4 via both radical and nonradical mechanisms. The photoelectrical properties and PMS activation capability were improved by WPBC. WPBC/g-C3N4 presented high stability for multiple runs.

Phosphorus (Pi) and cadmium (Cd) contamination in water sources pose significant health risks and environmental concerns. Periphytic biofilms have been recognized for their ability to effectively remove these contaminants from aquatic environments. This study aimed to investigate the impact of photon and electron treatments on Pi and Cd removal by periphytic biofilms. The experiments spanned a monthly timeframe, focusing on how photon and electron treatments affected the contaminant removal efficiency of periphytic biofilms. The results revealed that while the introduction of electrons had a minimal impact on contaminant accumulation, the enhancement of photon exposure significantly improved the absorption capacity of periphytic biofilms. This, in turn, led to enhanced removal of Pi and Cd from the water. One possible explanation for this phenomenon is that photons played a crucial role in inducing nitrate and ammonium conversion, thereby facilitating the accumulation of 4.70 mg kg−1 Pi and 2.40 mg kg−1 Cd in periphytic biofilms. In contrast, electron treatment had limited effects on nitrate conversion. These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying the removal of water contaminants by periphytic biofilms under the influence of electron and photon treatments. Furthermore, they have practical implications for improving pollutant removal capabilities in aquatic ecosystems using periphytic biofilms.

Over-fertilization has a significant impact on soil microbial properties and its ecological environment. However, the effects of long-term fertilization on microbial properties on a large scale are still vague. This meta-analysis collected 6211 data points from 109 long-term experimental sites in China to evaluate the effects of fertilizer type and fertilization duration, as well as soil and climate conditions, on the effect sizes on various microbial properties and indices. The organic fertilizers combined with straw (NPKS) and manure (NPKM) had the highest effect sizes, while the chemical fertilizers N (sole N fertilizer) and NPK (NPK fertilizer) had the lowest. When compared with the control, NPKM treatment had the highest effect size, while N treatment had the lowest effect size on MBN (111% vs. 19%), PLFA (110% vs. −7%), fungi (88% vs. 43%), Actinomycetes (97% vs. 44%), urease (77% vs. 25%), catalase (15% vs. −11%), and phosphatase (58% vs. 4%). NPKM treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on bacteria (123% vs. 33%). NPKS treatment had the highest while N treatment had the lowest effect sizes on MBC (77% vs. 8%) and invertase (59% vs. 0.2%). NPKS treatment had the highest while NPK treatment had the lowest effect size on the Shannon index (5% vs. 1%). The effect sizes of NPKM treatment were the highest predominantly in arid regions because of the naturally low organic carbon in soils of these regions. The effect sizes on various microbial properties were also highly dependent on soil texture. In coarse-textured soils the effect sizes on MBC and MBN peaked sooner compared with those of clayey or silty soils, although various enzymes were most active in silty soils during the first 10 years of fertilization. Effect sizes on microbial properties were generally higher under NPKM and NPKS treatments than under NPK or N treatments, with considerable effects due to climate conditions. The optimal field fertilizer regime could be determined based on the effects of fertilizer type on soil microorganisms under various climate conditions and soil textures. This will contribute to the microbial biodiversity and soil health of agricultural land. Such controls should be used for adaptation of fertilization strategies to global changes.

Abstract Background Fat tail is a unique trait in sheep acquired during domestication. Several genomic analyses have been conducted in sheep breeds from limited geographic origins to identify the genetic factors underlying this trait. Nevertheless, these studies obtained different candidates. The results of these regional studies were easily biased by the breed structures. Results To minimize the bias and distinguish the true candidates, we used an extended data set of 968 sheep representing 18 fat-tailed breeds and 14 thin-tailed breeds from around the world, and integrated two statistical tests to detect selection signatures, including Genetic Fixation Index (F ST ) and difference of derived allele frequency (ΔDAF). The results showed that platelet derived growth factor D (PDGFD) exhibited the highest genetic differentiation between fat- and thin-tailed sheep breeds. Analysis of sequence variation identified that a 6.8-kb region within the first intron of PDGFD is likely the target of positive selection and contains regulatory mutation(s) in fat-tailed sheep. Histological and gene expression analyses demonstrated that PDGFD expression is associated with maturation and hemostasis of adipocytes. Further retrospective analysis of public transcriptomic datasets revealed that PDGFD expression is down-regulated during adipogenesis in both human and mouse, and is higher in fat tissues of obese individuals than that in lean individuals. Conclusions These results reveal that PDGFD is the predominant factor for the fat tail phenotype in sheep by contributing to adiopogenesis and maintaining the hemostasis of mature adipocytes. This study provides insights into the selection of fat-tailed sheep and has important application to animal breeding, as well as obesity-related human diseases.

Fat-tail sheep exhibit a unique trait whereby substantial adipose tissue accumulates in the tail, a phenotype that is advantageous in many agroecological environments. In this study, we conducted histological assays, transcriptome analysis and functional assays to examine morphogenesis, characterize gene expression, and elucidate mechanisms that regulate fat tail development. We obtained the microstructure of tail before and after fat deposition, and demonstrated that measurable fat deposition occurred by the 80-day embryo (E80) stage, earlier than other tissues. Transcriptome profiling revealed 1,058 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with six markedly different expression trends. GSEA enrichment and other downstream analyses showed important roles for genes and pathways involving in metabolism and that mitochondrial components were specifically overexpressed in the fat tail tissue of the 70-day embryo (E70). One hundred and eighty-three genes were further identified by leading edge gene analysis, among which, 17 genes have been reported in previous studies, including EEF1D, MTFP1, PPP1CA, PDGFD. Notably, the MTFP1 gene was highly correlated with the expression of other genes and with the highest enrichment score and gene expression change. Knockdown of MTFP1 in isolated adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) inhibited cell proliferation and migration ability, besides, promoted the process of adipogenesis in vitro.

Tibetan sheep are one of the three major coarse sheep breeds in China, and they possess a long history of formation. However, few studies have been conducted on the identification of Tibetan sheep breeds at the molecular level. In this study, a total of 448 individuals from 24 Tibetan sheep populations in the 5 regions of Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Yunnan, and Sichuan were analyzed using the Affymetrix Ovine SNP 600K high-density chip to construct specific single-nucleoside polymorphism (SNP) genetic marker sets of Tibetan sheep breeds. Firstly, the genetic structure analysis showed that Yunnan–Tibetan sheep (NL, Ninglang; JC, Jianchuan), Zuogong (ZG), Heizang (HZ), Gongga (GG,) and Tao sheep (TS) can be clearly distinguished from other Tibetan sheep populations. Next, based on the population differentiation index FST, the PCA and NJ tree results showed that only 60 specific SNPs can successfully separate Tibetan sheep in the Yunnan region from Tibetan sheep in other regions, and the distinguishing effect on Yunnan–Tibetan sheep reached 100%. Using the same method, we found that 4 Tibetan sheep breeds, including Zuogong (ZG, 20 SNPs), Heizang (HZ, 60 SNPs), Gongga (GG, 60 SNPs), and Tao sheep (TS, 30 SNPs), can also be distinguished from other Tibetan sheep populations with only a few SNP loci (20–60), and the distinguishing effect reached 100%. Overall, we successfully obtained a Yunnan region-specific (60 SNPs) genetic marker set and 4 breed-specific SNP genetic marker sets (20–60 SNPs) for the first time for the identification of Tibetan sheep breeds at the molecular level. These made up for the lack of genetic marker sets for the identification of Tibetan sheep breeds, and provided a genomic basis for the scientific classification and accurate identification of livestock and poultry genetic resources on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.

In an analysis of the penetration resistance and tillage depth of post-tillage soil, four surface-layer discrimination methods, specifically, three machine learning algorithms—Kmeans, DBSCAN, and GMM—and a curve-fitting method, were used to analyze data collected from the cultivated and uncultivated layers. Among them, the three machine learning algorithms found the boundary between the tilled and untilled layers by analyzing which data points belonged to which layer to determine the depth of the soil in the tilled layer. The curve-fitting method interpreted the intersection among data from the fitted curves of the ploughed layer and the un-ploughed layer as the tillage depth. The three machine learning algorithms were used to process a standard data set for model evaluation. DBSCAN’s discrimination accuracy of this data set reached 0.9890 and its F1 score reached 0.9934, which were superior to those of the other two algorithms. Under standard experimental conditions, the ability of DBSCAN clustering to determine the soil depth was the best among the four discrimination methods, and the discrimination accuracy reached 90.63% when the error was 15 mm. During field-test verification, the discriminative effect of DBSCAN clustering was still the best among the four methods. However, the soil blocks encountered in the field test affected the test data, resulting in large errors in the processing results. Therefore, the combined RANSCA robust regression and DBSCAN clustering algorithm, which can eliminate interference from soil blocks in the cultivated layer and can solve the problem of large depth errors caused by soil blocks in the field, was used to process the data. After testing, when the RANSCA and DBSCAN combined method was used to process all samples in the field and the error was less than 20mm, the accuracy rate reached 82.69%. This combined method improves the applicability of discrimination methods and provides a new method of determining soil depth.

Taxodium hybrid Zhongshanshan has been widely planted in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) for soil and carbon conservation, with quantities over 50 million. The objective of this study was to determine how T. hybrid Zhongshanshan plantations affected soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community structure in the YRB, and to examine the consistency of changes by afforestation. Soils under T. Zhongshanshan plantations across six sites of the YRB were compared with soils of adjacent non-forested sites. Soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community structure were determined to clarify edaphic driving factors and reveal the effects of afforestation on bacteria. The results indicated that most soil attributes manifested improvements, e.g., total nitrogen in Jiangxi and Shanghai; available phosphorus in Hubei, Chongqing and Yunnan, exhibited the potential to maintain or ameliorate soil quality. A decrease in soil bulk density caused by plantation was also observed at the expense of soil macro-aggregates augment. Afforestation of T. Zhongshanshan plantation has habitually improved Shannon diversity and Chao1 richness, of which dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria, and increased the relative abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae, and the classes Flavobacteriia, Acidobacteria_Gp5, and Bacilli. We concluded that T. Zhongshanshan plantation can be employed to facilitate soil nutrient accumulation in the YRB, but that the degree, rate and direction of changes in soil attributes are sites dependent. It is recommended that afforestation of nutrient-depleted and less productive lands in the YRB should utilize this fast-growing species in combination with proper fertilization.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate whether age at complete repair of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) impacts postoperative morbidity and length of hospital stay in infants less than 365 days of age. Methods The United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample was searched for infants 0–365 days of age that underwent complete repair of TOF between 2005 and 2011. Patients were categorized based on age at time of repair: 0–30 days; 31–90 days; 91–180 days; > 180 days. Results A total of 1112 infants were included in the study. Multivariate analysis showed the risk of postoperative complications was 40% lower in infants ≥91 days old at the time of repair as compared to those ≤30 days old. In addition, children > 30 days old at the time of repair had a significantly shorter length of hospital stay than those aged ≤30 days. In the subgroup with elective repair, older age was associated with a shorter length of hospital stay as compared to those ≤30 days old at repair, while association between age at complete repair of TOF and postoperative complication was not significant among the groups after adjusting for confounders. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous inorganic–organic hybrid materials consisting of metal ions (clusters or secondary building units) and organic ligands through coordination bonds, have attracted wide attention because of their high surface area, huge ordered porosity, uniform structural cavities, and excellent thermal/chemical stability. In this work, durian shell biomass carbon fiber and Fe3O4 functionalized metal–organic framework composite material (durian shell fiber-Fe3O4-MOF, DFM) was synthesized and employed for the adsorption removal of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The morphology, structure, and chemical elements of the DFM material were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) techniques. Adsorption conditions such as pH, adsorption time, and temperature were optimized. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics results show that the adsorption process of DFM material to MB is more in line with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Using these models, the maximum adsorption capacity of 53.31 mg/g was obtained by calculation. In addition, DFM material could be easily reused through an external magnet and the removal rate of MB was still 80% after five adsorption cycles. The obtained results show that DFM composite material, as an economical, environmentally friendly, recyclable new adsorbent, can simply and effectively remove MB from wastewater.

The hair follicle is a complex mini-organ in the skin that undergoes organ induction, morphogenesis, and regeneration. However, the accurate molecular mechanism of skin and hair diversity regulation is still elusive. The sheep is an animal model that can be used to further explore the mechanisms of skin and hair diversity. In this study, we carried out a transcriptomic analysis of the mRNA expression in the skin of Xinji fine-wool sheep at different growth stages (3 and 12 months old) and 12-month-old Tan sheep and explored the transcripts’ relationship with hair follicle growth. A total of 1327 mRNAs and 67 transcription factors were identified to be differentially expressed in the different breeds and during different periods of skin development. The differentially expressed genes were enriched in GO terms represented by system development, multicellular organism development, animal organ development, and skin development, and three KEGG pathways typified those governing differences in skin structure. Combining protein–protein interaction networks of skin development (GO:0043588) and functional annotation, nine important candidate genes, namely, LAMA5, OVOL1, SRF, DHCR24, NGFR, SMO, CDSN, HOXC13, and KDF1, and many core genes with minor effects were confirmed to be associated with hair follicle development. Furthermore, members of the zf-C2H2 and homeobox transcription factor families, which were identified to play a crucial role in producing finer and denser wool, were mainly upregulated in 12-month-old Xinji fine-wool sheep when compared with expression in 12-month-old Tan sheep and 3-month-old Xinji fine-wool sheep. This study revealed the major–minor gene interactions in the developmental pathway and provided ideas for an in-depth understanding of the genetic structure and gene regulation in the skin/hair growth process.

The controlled synthesis of highly ordered mesoporous structure has attracted considerable attention in the field of electrochemistry because of its high specific surface area which can contribute the transportation of ions. Herein, a general nano-casting approach is proposed for synthesizing highly ordered mesoporous NiCo2O4 microspheres. The as-synthesized mesoporous NiCo2O4 microsphere materials with high Brunner-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (~97.77 m2g−1) and uniform pore size distribution around 4 nm exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of ~1,467 mAhg−1, a good rate capability as well as cycling stability. The superior electrochemical performance was mainly because of the highly porous nature of NiCo2O4, which rendered volume expansion during the process of cycling and shortened lithium-ions transport pathways. These properties showcase the inherent potential for use of highly ordered mesoporous NiCo2O4 microspheres as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries in the future.

“Smart” polymeric microcapsules with excellent permeability of membranes have drawn considerable attention in scientific and industrial research such as drug delivery carriers, microreactors, and artificial organelles. In this work, hybrid hollow polymeric microcapsules (HPs) containing redox-active gold-sulfide bond were prepared with bovine serum albumin, inorganic metal cluster (AuNCs), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) conjugates by using Pickering emulsion method. HPs were transferred from water-in-oil to water-in-water by adding PEGbis(N-succinimidylsuccinate). To achieve redox-responsive membrane, the Au-S bond units incorporated into the microcapsules’ membranes, allowed us to explore the effects of a new stimuli, that is, the redox Au-S bond breaking on the microcapsules’ membranes. The permeability of these hybrid hollow polymeric microcapsules could be sensitively tuned via adding environment-friendly hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), resulting from a fast fracture of Au-S bond. Meanwhile, AuNCs and conjugates could depart from the microcapsules, and enhance the permeability of the membrane. Based on the excellent permeability of the membrane, phosphatase was encapsuled into HPs and p-nitrophenyl phosphate as a substrate. After adding 1 × 10−2 and 1 × 10−4 M H2O2, the catalytic efficiency was nearly 4.06 and 2.22 times higher than that of HPs in the absence of H2O2, respectively. Hence, the unique redox-responsive HPs have potential applications in biocatalytic reaction, drug delivery, and materials as well as in bioscience.

The main purpose is to figure out the involved synergistic effects by combining sono-Fenton using in situ generated H2O2 and the photocatalytic process of P25 under visible light (Vis/P25). Two emerging contaminants, dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP), with similar structure but different properties were selected to examine the influence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of target pollutants. Results show that there is synergy between sono-Fenton and Vis/P25, and more significant synergy can be obtained with low dose of Fe3+ or Fe2+ (0.02 mM) and for more hydrophilic DMP. Based on systematic analysis, the primary mechanism of the synergy is found to be the fast regeneration of Fe2+ by photo-electrons from P25 photocatalysis, which plays the dominant role when the Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration is low (0.02 mM). However, at high Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration (0.5 mM), the photoreduction of Fe(III) to Fe2+ can play a key role with relatively low efficiency. By studying the degradation intermediates of both DMP and DEP, the degradation pathways can be determined as the hydroxylation of aromatic ring and the oxidation of the aliphatic chain. Better mineralization performance is achieved for DMP than that for DEP due to the enhanced utilization efficiency of H2O2 by accelerating Fe2+ regeneration.

Hongze Lake is the first natural sink for transferring drinking water along the east route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. Thus, the assessment of health risk associated with sediment and soil in Hongze Lake is of vital importance in terms of protecting public health. This study surveyed the distribution of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in different types of bank soils and sediments at the estuary area of Hongze Lake. The total concentrations of PAHs range between 562.4 and 1585.8 ng/g, and 3- and 4-ring PAHs are the majority in all samples, accounting for 78.2% to 92.3% of the total PAHs. Source analysis was conducted, and the results showed that PAHs in the estuary area mainly come from the burning of fossil fuels, leakage of oil products, low temperature combustion, biomass fuel, and transportation. The risk assessment of the study area showed that the K values of all the points were between 0.1~3, indicating that there was a low ecological risk. This study indicates that further policies for controlling pollution sources of PAHs are needed for reducing health risks associated with fresh water in Hongze Lake.

Graphite carbon nitride (CN) has received tremendous interest, owing to its potential application in photocatalysis. However, excitonic effects stemming from Coulombic interactions limit the application prospect. Herein, mixed-dimensional metal-free two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunction composites combining 2D covalent-organic framework (COF) nanosheets and 3D hollow porous tubular CN with a phosphate group (CNP) were fabricated to target regulation of exciton dissociation. Experimental and characterization investigations revealed that the presence of a phosphate group in hollow porous tubular CN could reinforce the interfacial interaction between CNP and COF and adjust the band structures for the formation of the Z-scheme mechanism. Benefitted from the effective exciton dissociation and accelerated charge transport at the 2D/3D heterostructure interface, the optimal photocatalytic H2 evolution rate achieved up to 3700 μmol h-1 g-1, which is much higher than the 3D CN, heterojunction CN, and other CN-based photocatalysts reported previously. It also exhibited an excellent peroxymonosulfate-assisted tetracycline (TC) degradation capability, and the rate constant of TC over the COF/CNP5 sample reached 5.61 and 1.40 times as much as that of COF and CNP. This study affords a meritorious instance to construct a mixed-dimension metal-free heterojunction photocatalyst and opens insights for excitonic regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
