This article aims to propose a highly reliable permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) for flywheel energy-storage systems. Flywheel energy-storage systems are large-capacity energy storage technologies suitable for the short-term storage of electrical energy. PMSMs have been used in the flywheel energy-storage systems due to their advantages. One of the key requirements for PMSMs in flywheel energy-storage systems is high reliability. A double redundant winding structure is adopted to ensure fault-tolerant operation of the PMSM. The stator is designed with auxiliary teeth to reduce the short-circuit current. Moreover, the number of slots and poles is determined to ensure the winding factor, heat dissipation, and reduce losses. Moreover, the dual three-phase stator winding structure and auxiliary teeth are adopted on the PMSM to improve reliability. Afterward, the electromagnetic performance is analyzed, and the mechanical stress is investigated to ensure mechanical strength. Finally, a prototype is built and tested to verify the theoretical analysis and performance of the PMSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, in order to verify the effect of variable DC-bus voltage control, CCS-MPC (Continuous-Control-Set MPC) control is used to research the control of PMSM (Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machine) in a wide speed range. In order to maximize the speed of PMSM, the MTPA control, the field weakening control and the variable DC-bus voltage control are applied in the different speed range of PMSM. CCS-MPC can eliminate the control delay by controlling the predicted step size. When CCSMPC is applied to the PMSM control with a wide speed range, the advantages of strong adaptability of CCS-MPC can be exerted.

With the development of flywheel technology, the speed and the voltage level of flywheel continue to increase. The Z-type self-balancing modular multilevel converter can have a wide frequency range at medium voltage and is suitable for flywheel driving application. However, the voltage and current characteristics of the flywheel and the variable frequency drive still affect capacitor voltage balance in each phase-leg. The new balance of capacitor voltage can be achieved by controlling the circulating current. This paper proposed a control algorithm of the novel Z-type self-balancing modular multilevel converter for flywheel driving applications. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

To improve the power quality of traction power system, a novel active power quality compensator (APQC) and a new compensating currents detection method are proposed. The APQC consists of a three-phase voltage source converter and a Scott transformer. The Scott transformer, taken as an isolation transformer, not only connects the three-phase converter to the traction power system, but also converts the traction power system to a nearly balanced three-phase power system. Therefore, a general three-phase converter could be used in APQC. Regarding the traction substation as a compensating object, the power quality of a traction substation can be improved integrally. Simulation and prototype experimental results show that the proposed APQC is able to compensate reactive power, harmonic, and negative-sequence currents in two feeders of a traction substation.
