9. Efficacy trial of Vi polysaccharide vaccine against typhoid fever in south-western China

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of locally produced Vi vaccine over a time period of longer than one year. METHODS: A double-blinded, randomized field trial was performed in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south-western China, using 30 mg doses of locally produced Vi. Enrolled subjects were 3-50 years of age, although the majority (92%) were school-aged children, who have the highest rate of typhoid fever in this setting. A total of 131 271 people were systematically allocated a single dose of 30 mg of Vi polysaccharide or saline placebo. The study population was followed for 19 months, with passive surveillance conducted in the Ministry of Health and the Regional Health and Anti-epidemic Centre (HAEC). Clinically suspected cases of typhoid fever were confirmed by blood culture, or by serological reaction with O-antigen (Widal tests). FINDINGS: After 19 months, there were 23 culture-confirmed cases of typhoid fever in the placebo group versus 7 cases in the Vi group (Protective efficacy (PE) = 69%; 95% CI = 28%, 87%). Most of the isolates were from school-aged children: 22 cases in the placebo group versus 6 in the Vi group (PE = 72%; 95% CI = 32%, 82%). No serious post-injection reactions were observed. The locally produced Vi polysaccharide vaccine showed levels of protective efficacy similar to those for Vi vaccine produced in industrial countries. CONCLUSION: The slightly higher dose of vaccine did not seem to alter efficacy significantly in China.

Abstract

A fluidized bed gasification system was built to investigate the biomass steam gasification performance in different conditions. Medium heating value syngas with 34% H2 content and no more than 20 g/Nm3 tar content could be obtained under 800°C with a S/B (steam vs. biomass ratio) of 0.9 by using olivine as bed material. The results indicated that syngas quality (including H2 content, gasification efficiency, tar reduction, etc.) is in a positive correlation with temperature and S/B, but has a negative correlation with fluidization number (FN). Compared with quartz sand and dolomite, olivine is more suitable for fluidized bed because of its catalytic ability and good abrasion performance for fluidized bed gasifier. As a result, a set of optimum parameters is recommended with S/B of 0.9~1.0, FN of 1.4, and temperature of 800°C in this study. Tar is a by-product from the gasification process, which will cause the pipeline congestion, reduce the gasification efficiency, and deteriorate the working condition. According to this experiment, the temperature and S/B both have a negative effect on tar content, while tar content increased with increase in the FN. Dolomite and olivine both have an inhibition function on tar, and the olivine is considered the best choice of bed material because of its good anti-wear properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Optical probe techniques were used to study the steady state and transient dynamics of charged and neutral photoexcitations in thin films of poly(3-hexyl thiophene)s with regioregular order, which form self-assembled lamellae structures with increased interchain interactions and regiorandom order that preserve a chain-like morphol. In regiorandom polythiophene films intrachain excitons with correlated photoinduced absorption and stimulated emission bands are the primary photoexcitations; they give rise to a moderately strong photoluminescence band, and long-lived triplet excitons and intrachain charged polarons. In regioregular polythiophene films, the primary photoexcitations are excitons with much larger interchain component; this results in lack of stimulated emission, vanishing intersystem crossing, and a weak photoluminescence band. The long-lived photoexcitations in regioregular polythiophene films are interchain excitons and delocalized polarons (DP) within the lamellae, with small relaxation energy. The DP species were thoroughly studied as a function of the alkyl side group of the polymer backbone, film deposition conditions, and solvents, at high hydrostatic pressure. The quantum interference between the low energy absorption band of the DP species and a series of photoinduced IR active vibrations, which give rise to antiresonances that are superimposed on the electronic absorption band were studied and explained by a Fano-type interference mechanism, using the amplitude mode model
