Balancing mechanical and corrosion performance is a decisive factor in the use of high entropy and medium entropy alloys (H & MEAs) as advanced engineering structural materials. This study investigates the microstructure of Fe77.3-xMnxSi9.1Cr9.8C3.8 (x = 14, 23.2) HEAs by combining experiments and first-principles calculations to elucidate the effects of adjusting Mn content on the mechanical and corrosion properties of FCC and FCC + HCP phases. The results demonstrate that HEAs with low Mn content exhibit a single FCC phase, whereas increasing Mn content not only precipitates the HCP phase but also refines the grain size. The yield strength, compressive fracture strength, work hardening index, and plasticity of Fe77.3-xMnxSi9.1Cr9.8C3.8 (x = 14, 23.2 at.%) HEAs are 1300 and 1526 MPa, 2380 and 2332 MPa, 0.42 and 0.36, 16.7% and 16%, respectively. Both HEAs exhibit superior electrochemical and salt spray corrosion performance compared to 304 stainless steels, with the Fe63.3Mn14Si9.1Cr9.8C3.8 alloy performing the best, exhibiting a self-corrosion potential of −0.523V and a self-corrosion current density of 2.605 × 10−6 A cm−2. The excellent corrosion resistance of Fe63.3Mn14Si9.1Cr9.8C3.8 can be attributed to the moderate grain size, resulting in excellent passivation film characteristics, and the lower Mn content, leading to a higher Cr2O3 content in the passivation film. First-principles calculations reveal that Fe63.3Mn14Si9.1Cr9.8C3.8 has a lower density of states number at the Fermi level (i.e., Fe63.3Mn14Si9.1Cr9.8C3.8 is 214.145eV, Fe54.1Mn23.2Si9.1Cr9.8C3.8 is 337.077eV), a wider pseudogap width, higher work function (5.700ev, 5.189ev), and better stability. Additionally, there exists a strong trade-off between corrosion and mechanical properties due to the influence of the HCP phase and grain size.

We report a monolithic heterodyne receiver that uses the AlGaN/GaN nonlinear transmission line as a local oscillator and a mixer simultaneously. This heterodyne receiver has a high RF bandwidth from 80 to 360 GHz and a high intermediate frequency bandwidth of 18 GHz. These results indicate that this nonlinear transmission line receiver has promising potential in broadband spectrum analysis.

Trucking is an important production link in most open-pit mines, and its transportation cost accounts for more than 50% of the total production cost of open-pit mines. The quality of the driver’s driving behavior plays a crucial role in the fine control of the production cost of transportation. Different from the previous evaluation studies of drivers’ driving behavior in open-pit mines, which mainly took safety driving behavior index as a factor variable, this paper puts forward a comprehensive evaluation method of driving behavior of mining truck drivers, which takes both safety driving and transportation cost as factor variables. Taking the mining truck as the research object, firstly, a scientific and reasonable data collection scheme is established, and the data information characterizing the transport state of the mining truck is obtained through data collection and analysis. Secondly, the RKNN algorithm of time series prediction and the wavelet analysis method are used to achieve noise reduction and missing processing of the original data so as to obtain accurate sample data. Then, taking the principal component analysis method as the entry point, through constructing the principal component analysis theory model, the key index system representing safe driving behavior and transportation cost is established to realize the comprehensive evaluation of the driving behavior of mining truck drivers, and the evaluation system of “standard driving”, “prudent driving” and “aggressive driving” of mining truck drivers is formulated. The results show that after noise reduction, the accuracy of mining car operation data can be improved by 7~12%, and the transportation cost can be reduced by about 5% after the driver’s operation behavior is standardized.

As the key technology of high-step stripping and blasting engineering, throwing blasting will be the development trend of the production optimization and benefit maximization of the open-pit mine in the future. In order to break with the research idea of optimizing the cast blasting effect by improving the effective throwing rate for a long period of time, maximizing the economic benefit of the subsequent dragline stripping technology and stabilizing the engineering connection, this paper takes the Heidaigou open-pit mine as the research object. Through data acquisition, analysis, and data fusion of the heaped-up bulk characteristics, the heaped-up bulk profile can be obtained to characterize the cast blasting effect. Secondly, the key factors influencing the cast blasting effect are determined based on the gray relational degree theory. Then, the black box principle of the system control theory is adopted as the guiding principle of the blasting optimization. Based on the production data of field cast blasting, the dynamic change law between the controllable variables of system input and the observable variables of system feedback in the black box system are studied and explored without consideration of the internal structure or the energy transformation relationship of the cast blasting system. Finally, the optimal blasting parameter combination under different working conditions is obtained. If the research results are successfully applied, it is expected that the dragline stripping technology cost of the Heidaigou open-pit mine can be reduced by 5~10%, and the results can also provide new ideas and new ways of optimizing the design of cast blasting.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe developmental delay, motor impairment, language and cognition deficits, and often with increased seizure activity. AS is caused by deficiency of UBE3A, which is both an E3 ligase and a cofactor for transcriptional regulation. We previously showed that the small conductance potassium channel protein SK2 is a UBE3A substrate, and that increased synaptic SK2 levels contribute to impairments in synaptic plasticity and fear-conditioning memory, as inhibition of SK2 channels significantly improved both synaptic plasticity and fear memory in male AS mice. In the present study, we investigated UBE3a-mediated regulation of synaptic plasticity and fear-conditioning in female AS mice. Results from both western blot and immunofluorescence analyses showed that synaptic SK2 levels were significantly increased in hippocampus of female AS mice, as compared to wild-type (WT) littermates. Like in male AS mice, long-term potentiation (LTP) was significantly reduced while long-term depression (LTD) was enhanced at hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapses of female AS mice, as compared to female WT mice. Both alterations were significantly reduced by treatment with the SK2 inhibitor, apamin. The shunting effect of SK2 channels on NMDA receptor was significantly larger in female AS mice as compared to female WT mice. Female AS mice also showed impairment in both contextual and tone memory recall, and this impairment was significantly reduced by apamin treatment. Our results indicate that like male AS mice, female AS mice showed significant impairment in both synaptic plasticity and fear-conditioning memory due to increased levels of synaptic SK2 channels. Any therapeutic strategy to reduce SK2-mediated inhibition of NMDAR should be beneficial to both male and female patients.

In the process of open-pit mining, the system parameters determine the economic benefit and production efficiency of the mine. Conventional optimization involves building a system model for the process parameters. However, complex large-scale systems such as open-pit mining are difficult to model, resulting in a failure to obtain effective solutions. This paper describes a system simulation method for the process parameters involved in open-pit mining. The nature and interaction of each component of the system are analyzed in detail, and the logical flow of each layer of the system is determined. Taking the basic operational linkages of the equipment as the system drivers, we obtained the operational flow of dragline information. The barycentric circular projection method is used to simplify the control logic of the system, and a system storage state model is constructed to identify dynamic changes in the system and obtain the operation parameters of the dragline. A discrete event system is used for quantitative modeling, and the event step method is employed to advance the simulation process and obtain decision information. Finally, simulations are performed using various system parameters. The simulation results show that the maximum efficiency is achieved when the dragline height is ∼13 m, giving a capacity of 4276.52 m3/h. Error analysis indicates that the modeling error is minimized using a simulation correction coefficient of α = 0.94.

Establishing exploration vectors to infer the properties of ore-forming fluids, locate blind ore bodies with the aid of visible to near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy, and infer the chemistry of minerals, is a new research interest for economic geology. Common alterations and clay minerals, including sericite, chlorite, epidote, alunite, kaolinite, tourmaline, etc., are ideal objects for the study of exploration indicators due to their sensitivity to variations in the nature of hydrothermal fluid. The diagnostic spectral feature and chemistry vary spatially and systematically with physicochemical change. VNIR spectroscopy can characterize the REE-bearing clay minerals directly. Obtaining spectral or chemical parameters with the aid of VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy, electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) or laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) can help to establish exploration vectors. This paper systematically summarizes recent advances in mineral exploration indicators (MEIs) of VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy and chemistry, and compares them in different regions or deposits. We found that some MEI spatial variation trends are random, even the same type of deposit can show an opposite trend. The controlling factors that limit the application of the established MEIs are vague. Conducting further research on petrology and mineralogy with the aids of observation under microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), and EPMA are suggested to discover alteration mineral assemblage, alteration stages, and behaviors of “the pathfinder elements” related to mineralization. Based on the above research, the physicochemical properties of ore-forming fluids and their control over MEIs can be inferred. Refining the theoretical basis is critical to understanding and popularization of spectral and chemical MEIs.

While calpains have been implicated in neurogenesis for a long time, there is still little information regarding the specific contributions of various isoforms in this process. We took advantage of the availability of mutant mice with complete deletion of calpain-1 to analyze its contribution to neurogenesis. We first used the incorporation of BrdU in newly-generated cells in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus to determine the role of calpain-1 deletion in neuronal proliferation. Our results showed that the lack of calpain-1 decreased the rate of cell proliferation in adult hippocampus. As previously shown, it also decreased the long-term survival of newly-generated neurons. We also used data from previously reported RNA and miRNA sequencing analyses to identify differentially expressed genes in brain of calpain-1 knock-out mice related to cell division, cell migration, cell proliferation and cell survival. A number of differentially expressed genes were identified, which could play a significant role in the changes in neurogenesis in calpain-1 knock out mice. The results provide new information regarding the role of calpain-1 in neurogenesis and have implications for better understanding the pathologies associated with calpain-1 mutations in humans.

Abstract Background Few studies in China have examined personal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure using polysulfone dosimetry. Methods In this study, 93 mother and adolescent child pairs (N = 186) from two locations in China, one rural (higher latitude) and one urban (lower latitude), completed 3 days of personal UVR dosimetry and a sun/clothing diary, as part of a larger pilot study. Results The average daily ambient UVR in each location as measured by dosimetry was 20.24 Minimal Erythemal Doses (MED) in the rural location and 20.53 MED in the urban location. Rural mothers had more average daily time outdoors than urban mothers (5.5 h, compared with 1.5 h, in urban mothers) and a much higher daily average personal UVR exposure (4.50 MED, compared with 0.78 MED in urban mothers). Amongst adolescents, rural males had the highest average daily personal UVR exposure, followed by rural females, urban females and urban males (average 2.16, 1.05, 0.81, and 0.48 MED, respectively). Conclusions Although based on small numbers, our findings show the importance of geographic location, age, work/school responsibilities, and sex of the adolescents in determining personal UVR exposure in China. These results suggest that latitude of residence may not be a good proxy for personal UVR exposure in all circumstances.

Cast blasting–dragline stripping technology is the most advanced mining technology used in open-pit mines. For a long time, however, its precision has been hindered. In this paper, we aim to improve the precision of cast blasting–dragline stripping technology and promote its intelligent design. We present a method to determine cast blasting stockpile forms. First, the 3D point cloud data for the Heidaigou open-pit mine from recent years were collected and counted, and a 3D mathematical model of overcasting stripping steps was constructed. Then, data classification and multivariate statistical analysis were used to establish a cast blasting stockpile characteristic parameter database. Next, locally weighted linear regression was used as the fitting method to achieve shape fitting under different cast blasting step heights. Finally, interval estimation was used as the fitting result test method to verify the morphology of the acquired cast blasting stockpile form. The research results show that the cast blasting stockpile form obtained by fitting can truly reflect the cast blasting effect of the Heidaigou open-pit mine and ensure the reliability and accuracy of the subsequent design of cast blasting–dragline stripping technology.

Coal seam impact risk assessment is the premise of coal mine safety, which can reduce the occurrence of underground impact pressure accidents and directly affect the safety, coal production, economic and social benefits of coal mining enterprises. In order to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams more reasonably and comprehensively, and consider the weights of different influencing factors on the impact risk of coal seams, the neural network model is proposed to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams. Mining depth, impact tendency, geological structure and mining technology are selected as the influencing factors of coal seam impact risk. Each influencing factor contains different evaluation indices, a total of 18. The 18 evaluation indices and the impact risk level are normalized and quantified. The BP neural network model for evaluating coal seam impact risk level is established, and the impact risk of 2-1 coal seams in a mine in Inner Mongolia is comprehensively evaluated and analyzed in this study. The results show that the BP neural network model can represent coal seam impact risk level well. The application of the BP neural network model to evaluate coal seam impact risk level has the characteristics of high precision, fast calculation speed and less artificial calculation, which provides an efficient and convenient method for the evaluation of coal seam impact risk.

Abstract Objective: To examine if geographic variations in the participation rates in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) are related to population‐level socio‐demographic characteristics. Methods: Data reflecting participation in the NBCSP for 504 Local Government Areas (LGAs) between July 2011 and June 2013 were extracted from the Social Health Atlas of Australia. Logistic regression models were used to examine independent associations (odds ratios [ORs]) between participation, Remoteness Area (RA) and selected socio‐demographic variables. Results: Compared to the participation rate for major cities (33.4%), participation was significantly higher in inner regional areas (36.5%, OR=1.15), but was much lower in remote (27.9%, OR=0.77) or very remote areas (25.0%, OR=0.65). When controlling for study period, gender, proportion of persons aged 65 years and older, Indigenous status, cultural background and socioeconomic status, significantly higher rates were observed in all non‐metropolitan areas than in major cities. Indigenous status was strongly related to the poorer participation in remote areas. Conclusions: Socio‐demographic characteristics, particularly Indigenous status, cultural background and population ageing, seem to be more important drivers of regional disparities in NBCSP participation than geographic remoteness. Implications for public health: This study provides important evidence to understand the regional disparities in participating in the national screening program.

Abstract This study aimed to detect the spatial distribution and high-risk clusters of female breast cancer mortality for the years 2011 to 2013 in Shandong Province, China. The urban-rural difference in the spatial distribution and clusters of disease mortality were also examined. Breast cancer mortality data were obtained from the Shandong Death Registration System (SDRS) during 2011 to 2013 and were adjusted for the underreporting rate. The purely spatial scan Statistics method was performed using Discrete Poisson model. Seven significant spatial clusters for high mortality of female breast cancer were detected in Shandong Province at the county level; these clusters were mainly located in the eastern, southern, southwestern, central and northern regions. The spatial distributions differed significantly between urban and rural populations. Population ageing influenced the distribution of breast cancer clusters for the urban eastern residents. This study provided evidence for the presence of clusters of breast cancer mortality in Shandong, China and found urban-rural difference in the clusters, which is helpful for developing effective strategies to control breast cancer in different areas.

Background: Alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in trauma patients has been reported in literature to be effective in changing harmful drinking patterns and injury recurrence. Despite good evidence that SBI can benefit patients and provide a more holistic care, it is not routinely implemented in acute medical settings in Australia, in particular emergency departments (EDs). Objective: This paper aims to assess the knowledge, confidence, and practice of alcohol SBI in trauma patients by emergency physicians throughout Australia and New Zealand through an online survey. Methods: Major EDs in Australia and Zealand were approached to participate in an online survey. Results from the survey were analyzed using simple descriptive summary statistics. Results: Fifty-eight physicians participated in the online survey. Almost all physicians reported at least 10% of all patients managed in ED had traumatic injuries and 35% had alcohol involvement. About 66% were consultant physicians and 84% had 5 or more years of practice. Sixty-four percent agreed to have adequate training in SBI, 22% had adequate time and resources, 47% would like more training in patient screening, and 72% were more likely to deliver SBI in 5 min. Limited time and resources were seen as major barriers. It was found that better understating of SBI may lead to higher confidence and more practice, or vice versa. Conclusion: High proportion of participants in this survey felt under-equipped to deliver SBI due to time limitation, perceived lack of resources, unsuitable environment, and supportive staff. There exists an opportunity to develop a shortened and efficient SBI program that can improve utilization of SBI in an emergency setting.

A CAPN1 missense mutation in Parson Russell Terrier dogs is associated with spinocerebellar ataxia. We now report that homozygous or heterozygous CAPN1-null mutations in humans result in cerebellar ataxia and limb spasticity in four independent pedigrees. Calpain-1 knockout (KO) mice also exhibit a mild form of ataxia due to abnormal cerebellar development, including enhanced neuronal apoptosis, decreased number of cerebellar granule cells, and altered synaptic transmission. Enhanced apoptosis is due to absence of calpain-1-mediated cleavage of PH domain and leucine-rich repeat protein phosphatase 1 (PHLPP1), which results in inhibition of the Akt pro-survival pathway in developing granule cells. Injection of neonatal mice with the indirect Akt activator, bisperoxovanadium, or crossing calpain-1 KO mice with PHLPP1 KO mice prevented increased postnatal cerebellar granule cell apoptosis and restored granule cell density and motor coordination in adult mice. Thus, mutations in CAPN1 are an additional cause of ataxia in mammals, including humans.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the lysosomal Ragulator complex is essential for full activation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). Abnormal mTORC1 activation has been implicated in several developmental neurological disorders, including Angelman syndrome (AS), which is caused by maternal deficiency of the ubiquitin E3 ligase UBE3A. Here we report that Ube3a regulates mTORC1 signaling by targeting p18, a subunit of the Ragulator. Ube3a ubiquinates p18, resulting in its proteasomal degradation, and Ube3a deficiency in the hippocampus of AS mice induces increased lysosomal localization of p18 and other members of the Ragulator-Rag complex, and increased mTORC1 activity. p18 knockdown in hippocampal CA1 neurons of AS mice reduces elevated mTORC1 activity and improves dendritic spine maturation, long-term potentiation (LTP), as well as learning performance. Our results indicate that Ube3a-mediated regulation of p18 and subsequent mTORC1 signaling is critical for typical synaptic plasticity, dendritic spine development, and learning and memory.

Underreporting is a quality concern in mortality statistics. The purpose of this study was to assess and adjust underreporting in the population-based cause-of-death statistics. The total population (96 million) in Shandong, China was divided into 262 subcounty level populations geographically and by residence type (urban/rural). For each subpopulation, the total number of deaths during the years 2011-2013 was determined using data from the Household Registration System (HRS), and was used as a reference to assess the underreporting rate (UR) in the cause-of-death data from the Shandong Death Registration System (SDRS). It was estimated that 454,615 deaths, or 21.5% (95% CI: 21.4-21.5%) were unreported. Underreporting was more pronounced in rural (22.1%) versus urban communities (20.0%), in economically underdeveloped regions (32% versus 16% in least disadvantaged areas), and in newly included sites with no prior experience in cause-of-death reporting (24% versus 17%). Geographic variation was large with a UR at the prefectural level ranging from 11.2% to 43.7%. A stratified analysis showed that UR was higher in rural populations in high-income regions, but in middle- and low-income regions, was higher in urban communities. An adjustment factor (AF) was calculated for each of the 262 subpopulations (ranging from 0.9 to 2.5 with an average of 1.27). The total morality rate was adjusted from 6.03 to 7.67 deaths per 1000 persons. Underreporting in the SDRS varies greatly between areas and populations and is related to residence type, prior experience and local economy. Correcting underreporting at a local level is needed especially for comparative analyses across geographical areas or populations.

BACKGROUND:This study aims to examine the costs associated with a Hospital in the Nursing Home (HiNH) program in Queensland Australia directed at patients from residential aged care facilities (RACFs) with emergency care needs. METHODS:A cost analysis was undertaken comparing the costs under the HiNH program and the current practice, in parallel with a pre-post controlled study design. The study was conducted in two Queensland public hospitals: the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (intervention hospital) and the Logan Hospital (control hospital). Main outcome measures were the associated incremental costs or savings concerning the HiNH program provision and the acute hospital care utilisation over one year after intervention. RESULTS:The initial deterministic analysis calculated the total induced mean costs associated with providing the HiNH program over one year as AU$488,116, and the total induced savings relating to acute hospital care service utilisation of AU$8,659,788. The total net costs to the health service providers were thus calculated at -AU$8,171,671 per annum. Results from the probabilistic sensitivity analysis (based on 10,000 simulations) showed the mean and median annual net costs associated with the HiNH program implementation were -AU$8,444,512 and-AU$8,202,676, and a standard deviation of 2,955,346. There was 95% certainty that the values of net costs would fall within the range from -AU$15,018,055 to -AU$3,358,820. CONCLUSIONS:The costs relating to implementing the HiNH program appear to be much less than the savings in terms of associated decreases in acute hospital service utilisation. The HiNH service model is likely to have the cost-saving potential while improving the emergency care provision for RACF residents.

Gated solely by activity-induced changes in intracellular calcium, small-conductance potassium channels (SKs) are critical for a variety of functions in the CNS, from learning and memory to rhythmic activity and sleep. While there is a wealth of information on SK2 gating, kinetics, and Ca2+ sensitivity, little is known regarding the regulation of SK2 subcellular localization. We report here that synaptic SK2 levels are regulated by the E3 ubiquitin ligase UBE3A, whose deficiency results in Angelman syndrome and overexpression in increased risk of autistic spectrum disorder. UBE3A directly ubiquitinates SK2 in the C-terminal domain, which facilitates endocytosis. In UBE3A-deficient mice, increased postsynaptic SK2 levels result in decreased NMDA receptor activation, thereby impairing hippocampal long-term synaptic plasticity. Impairments in both synaptic plasticity and fear conditioning memory in UBE3A-deficient mice are significantly ameliorated by blocking SK2. These results elucidate a mechanism by which UBE3A directly influences cognitive function.

The design and construction of roof cutting and blasting is a key part of the roof cutting pressure releasing gob-side entry retaining (RCPRGER) technology. In the existing research, the blasting parameters of roof cutting have been primarily determined by field tests. However, the disadvantages of field tests include a complicated process, which hinders the succession of related procedures, and an unstable roof cutting effect. Therefore, in this work, the authors attempt to use a mathematical analysis method to simplify the design process of the key parameters of roof cutting blasting. First, the mechanics process mechanism of surrounding rocks with roof cutting and pressure releasing is investigated, and the stress evolution process of the surrounding rock is divided into the following six stages: original rock stress state, excavation stress state, supporting stress state, roof cutting stress state, premining stress state, and postmining stress state. Furthermore, the relationship between roof cutting and entry retaining from the perspective of Mohr’s stress circle is discussed. Next, using four typical mines, including the Tashan, Yuanlin, Jinfeng, and Hengyuan coal mines, as examples, the existing design methods of roof cutting and blasting, geological data characteristics of each mine, distribution rule of roof cutting connectivity rate, and explosive charge structure of roof cutting blasting are summarized. Based on these results, the logic of roof cutting blasting design is obtained, the key indices affecting blasting design are determined, and the blasting design is defined as a complex fuzzy problem with multiple factors. Finally, based on the study of the above mechanics mechanism and blasting rule, a three-layer back propagation (BP) neural network, including six input units, nine hidden units, and three output units, is developed with the four typical mines as the sample space. This neural network realizes the rapid determination of the three key parameters pertaining to sealing length, blasthole spacing, and the explosive charge weight of a single hole. Through training, the calculation error is less than 0.48%, which considerably simplifies the design process of the blasting parameters. The charge structure parameters can also be determined according to this method. At present, the construction of this neural network has the shortcomings of limited sample space. This problem can be overcome by supplementing the sample size in the subsequent research and practice, which will improve the efficiency and accuracy of this design method and promote the application and development of the RCPRGER technology. The interdisciplinary research reported in this paper is an attempt that uses an intelligent algorithm to simplify the design process of roof cutting blasting in RCPRGER, and it represents not only an application development of the intelligent algorithm, but also a new step regarding the intelligent design of RCPRGER technology.

In preparation for the introduction of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, we investigated awareness and knowledge of HPV/HPV vaccine and potential acceptability to HPV vaccine among mothers with a teenage daughter in Weihai, Shandong, China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2013 with a sample of 1850 mothers who had a daughter (aged 9-17 years) attending primary, junior and senior high schools. Modifications to the model were made on the basis of emergent evidence and results provided to local hospitals to inform resource planning for the forthcoming pandemic. To evaluate the fit of the model, a comparison between the model’s predictions and actual hospitalizations was made. In early 2010, a Web-based survey was undertaken to evaluate the model’s usefulness. Predictions based on modified assumptions arising from the new pandemic gained better fit than results from the default model. The survey identified that the modeling support was helpful and useful to service planning for local hospitals. Our research illustrates an integrated framework involving post hoc comparison and evaluation for implementing epidemiologic modeling in response to a public health emergency.

To reduce ammonium and nitrite in aquaculture water, an isolate of the denitrifying bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri, SC221-M, was obtained. The effects of various nitrogen and carbon sources, the ratio of carbon to nitrogen and temperature on bacterial growth, denitrification rates and the expression levels of nirS and nosZ in SC221-M were studied. The following conditions were determined to be optimal for growth and denitrification in SC221-M: NaNO2 as the nitrogen source, sodium citrate as the carbon source, a carbon to nitrogen ratio range of 4-8, and a temperature range of 20-35°C. Subsequently, SC221-M and the Bacillus cereus BSC24 strain were selected to generate microbial preparations. The results showed that addition of the microbial preparations decreased various hydrochemical parameters, including total dissolved solids, ammonium, nitrite, total nitrogen and the chemical oxygen demand. Nitrogen removal rates were highest on day 9; the removal rates of BSC24, SC221-M, a mixed preparation and a 3× mixed preparation were 24.5%, 26.6%, 53.9% and 53.4%, respectively. The mixed preparation (SC221-M+BSC24) was more effective at removing nitrogen than either the SC221-M or BSC24 preparation. Roche 454 pyrosequencing and subsequent analysis indicated that the control and other groups formed separate clusters, and the microbial community structure in the water changed significantly after the addition of microbial preparations. These results indicate that the addition of microbial preparations can improve both the water quality and microbial community structure in an experimental aquaculture system. P. stutzeri strain SC221-M and its related microbial preparations are potential candidates for the regulation of water quality in commercial aquaculture systems.
