Abstract The changes and influencing factors of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) and organic carbon (SOC) on precipitation gradients are crucial for predicting and evaluating carbon storage changes at the regional scale. However, people’s understanding of the distribution characteristics of SOC and SIC reserves on regional precipitation gradients is insufficient, and the main environmental variables that affect SOC and SIC changes are also not well understood. Therefore, this study focuses on the Alxa region and selects five regions covered by three typical desert vegetation types, Zygophyllum xanthoxylon (ZX), Nitraria tangutorum (NT), and Reaumuria songarica (RS), along the climate transect where precipitation gradually increases. The study analyzes and discusses the variation characteristics of SOC and SIC under different vegetation and precipitation conditions. The results indicate that both SOC and SIC increase with the increase of precipitation, and the increase in SOC is greater with the increase of precipitation. The average SOC content in the 0–300cm profile is NT (4.13 g kg−1) > RS (3.61 g kg−1) > ZX (3.57 g kg−1); The average value of SIC content is: RS (5.78 g kg−1) > NT (5.11 g kg−1) > ZX (5.02 g kg−1). Overall, the multi-annual average precipitation (MAP) in the Alxa region is the most important environmental factor affecting SIC and SOC.

Water processes secure plant survival and maintain their ecosystem function. Salinity affects water processes, but the mechanisms remain unclear and may depend on the degree of salinity stress. To improve the understanding of the cooperation of plant organs involved in water processes under salinity stress, we determined hydraulic, gas exchange, and physiological and biochemical parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. under different salinity stresses. The results suggested that P. euphratica enhanced water transport efficiency in a salinity-stress environment, and the strengthening effect of roots in the water transfer process was greater than that of the aboveground parts. P. euphratica also increased water use efficiency and water transport efficiency in mild and moderate salinity stress (less than 200 mmol/L NaCl) but was adversely affected by heavy salinity stress (more than 300 mmol/L NaCl). Furthermore, P. euphratica increased its water storage by regulating antioxidant enzyme scavenging capacity and osmoregulation, which resulted in coordinated greater water utilization and enhanced water transport among plant organs and indicated that the adverse effects on water processes triggered by salinity stress depended on the extent of salt stress. P. euphratica lessened stress-induced damage and maintained plant productivity by coordination and cooperation of water processes under certain levels of salinity. Research on the coordination and cooperation involving water processes in riparian forests in saline areas provides the scientific basis for riparian plant protection and restoration.

Desertification poses a serious threat to ecosystem health, and with global changes, the variability and uncertainty of ecological functions in semi-arid alpine regions are increasing. A pressing issue is quantifying how desertification affects the soil system functions in these areas. However, empirical evidence is still lacking in exploring the interaction between desertification degradation gradients and soil functions under natural conditions by coupling soil physicochemical properties, soil microbiota, and vegetation. For this purpose, we conducted a survey sampling of soil and vegetation at five sites with no, light, moderate, severe and extremely severe desertification in Qinghai Area of Qilian Mountains National Park, China. We introduced a new concept soil health stability (SHS) to represent the actual health status of soil systems in semi-arid alpine regions and assessed the impact of desertification on this stability. We observed that the intensification of desertification has led to a significant decrease in soil organic matter, relative abundance of soil microorganisms, and plant factors. The contributions of plant factors and soil microbiota to SHS showed a negative correlation with the degradation gradient. SHS varied across different degradation gradients, rather than following a single linear relationship, with a relatively rapid decline in the transition from non-desertification to moderate desertification. Our work emphasizes that the coupled contributions of soil physicochemical properties, soil microbiota, and vegetation to SHS. It calls for intensified prevention and treatment of mild and moderate desertification, while providing new methods and deeper scientific understanding for accurately evaluating soil system functions in semi-arid alpine regions.

To scientifically evaluate the sustainability of tree planting and afforestation in the Alxa Desert region, this study, grounded in the principles of water balance within the natural water cycle, employed multi-source remote sensing products and ground-based measurements to construct a quantitative response relationship model. This model links evapotranspiration (ET) with meteorological variables and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Furthermore, the study estimated the recovery thresholds and potential of forest and grassland vegetation coverage in the Alxa Desert region under various precipitation scenarios. The findings reveal that ET exhibited an increasing trend in 84.17% of the Alxa Desert region, with a significant increase observed in 61.53% of the area, indicating positive outcomes from the implementation of the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program. Notably, however, ET in the southeastern plain region demonstrated a decreasing trend, which is strongly associated with human activities. The response relationship model demonstrated that linear relationship areas constituted 47.52%, while nonlinear relationship areas accounted for 45.51% of the total. The overall model exhibited an R2 value of 0.69, indicating a high level of predictive accuracy. Analysis of forest and grassland coverage revealed that, under wet year scenarios, the vegetation coverage showed a significant trend of recovery, with an average recovery threshold of (75.4 ± 12.5)% and an average recovery potential of (8.5 ± 3.6)%. It is noteworthy that the vegetation coverage in 31.25% of the area had already surpassed the recovery threshold. The outcomes of this study provide a theoretical foundation for the formulation of more scientifically rigorous ecological restoration strategies in the future.

Plantations in dry and semi-arid areas significantly affect the soil’s ability to store carbon and maintain a stable water balance. It is yet unclear, though, how planted trees in these regions might impact the soil’s carbon and water levels. As a forest ages, it is unknown how soil water and soil carbon interact with one another. In order to conduct this study, four Saxaul plantations in the Alxa Plateau were chosen, with the neighboring mobile sandy (MS) ground serving as a control. The ages of the plantations ranged from 5 to 46 years. The major topics of the study included the relationship between soil water and soil carbon, changes in the 0-300 cm soil layer’s soil water content (SWC), soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) following afforestation. The findings demonstrated that, in comparison to MS, afforestation considerably increased SOC and SIC stocks. In comparison to MS, the SIC grew by 4.02 kg m-2, 4.12 kg m-2, 5.12 kg m-2, and 6.52 kg m-2 throughout periods of 5 years, 11 years, 22 years, and 46 years, respectively. SOC increased relative to MS by 2.55 kg m-2, 2.91 kg m-2, 3.53 kg m-2, and 4.05 kg m-2. Afforestation, however, also contributed to a considerable decline in deep SWC and an increase in the soil water deficit (SWD). In comparison to MS, the mean SWC values were lower at 5 years, 11 years, 22 years, and 46 years, respectively, by 0.48%, 1.37%, 1.56%, and 4.00%. The increase in soil carbon pool caused by sand afforestation actually came at the expense of a reduction in soil water due to a large negative association between deep SWC, SOC, and SIC. To limit SWC losses and encourage sustainable forest land development, we advocate suitable harvest management practices on forest land.

The process of soil water-heat change in the small basin of inland rivers in low coteau areas is of great significance to the whole inland river area.In this study， the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of soil water-heat and the response relationship to meteorological factors in low coteau areas of inland rivers are analyzed by using the field monitored meteorological data and soil water content and heat data.The conclusions are as follows： （1） The soil water content in mountainous areas varies at different depths， in the piedmont zone， there is only change in the surface or subsurface of the soil.The annual variation of soil moisture in shrub grassland of coteau areas， forest land， and desert grassland is greater than that on other underlying surfaces.The annual and spatial variation trends of soil temperature and soil moisture are consistent， and the higher the altitude， the lower the soil temperature.（2） Under different altitudes and underlying surface conditions in the low coteau area of inland rivers， there are great differences in the response of soil moisture to precipitation.Precipitation in mountainous areas can explain at least 88% of the change in soil water content.When the single precipitation in piedmont and downstream oasis is less than 4 mm， it can only affect the soil layer of 0~20 cm on the surface.When the single precipitation is less than 2 mm， it cannot affect the soil moisture content.（3） The soil temperature at the depth of 0~20 cm is sensitive to the change of air temperature， and in the low coteau area， the response of soil temperature to air temperature has a lag of 4.5 hours.（4） The soil moisture in the lower reaches of the Xitugou basin is replenished by the leakage of the intermittent flood， which makes the soil moisture higher in summer， which is consistent with the changing trend of temperature.

Information regarding plant water-use strategies is essential for understanding the hydrological processes and plant survival adaptation mechanisms in desert lake basin regions. To examine the water use strategies of plants in desert lake basin areas, water uptake patterns, water use efficiency, and water potential of Nitraria tangutorum were investigated at different distances from the lake duringhe growing seasons in the lake basin regions of the Badain Jaran Desert. The results indicate that N. tangutorum primarily absorbed groundwater in May (63.8%) and August (53.5%), relied on deep soil water in June (75.1%), and uniformly absorbed soil water from different layers in July. These observations could be explained by periodic fluctuations in the groundwater level and the consequent decrease in soil water availability, as well as plant root adjustments. As soil water availability decreases, N. tangutorum adapts to water variation by increasing its water use efficiency (WUE) and reducing its leaf water potential (Ψ). With intensified water stress, N. tangutorum gradually shifted from adventurous anisohydric regulation to conservative isohydric regulation. Thus, N. tangutorum responds to diverse degrees of environmental changes by altering its water-use strategy. A better understanding of the adaptive water use strategies developed by desert plants under varying water availability conditions provides insight into the diversity of species’ reactions to long-term drought and quantifies the hydrological cycle of desert ecosystems against the background of worldwide climate warming.

Afforestation is an important and effective way to curb wind-sand hazards in the Alxa Desert. However, over-afforestation makes soil drying occur frequently. The formation of a soil drying layer is seriously restricting the effectiveness of vegetation construction and regional ecological stability. To clarify the process of soil desiccation in Haloxylon ammodendron plantations and determine the suitable planting years, a typical H. ammodendron plantation in this area was selected as the research object, and the soil moisture variation characteristics of this sand-fixing vegetation region with vegetation age were analyzed. The analysis results on soil water supply, consumption, and balance showed that the soil water storage in 0–400 cm soil layer of H. ammodendron plantation varies significantly in different ages. The soil water storage in 0–11 years old was the largest, and the soil water supply was greater than the soil water consumption. The soil water storage in profile increased with the increase of precipitation, the soil water storage of H. ammodendron at 11–22 years old increased first and then decreased with precipitation, and the inflexion existed in 16.5 years old. The soil water consumption of H. ammodendron plantation at 22–46 years old was greater than that of soil water supplement, and the soil moisture appeared negative balance continuously. Therefore, to prevent further deterioration of soil moisture ecological environment in the H. ammodendron plantation and to promote the sustainable development of afforestation in desert areas, thinning measures are suggested when the growth period reaches 16.5 years. The research results could provide scientific basis for afforestation and soil dry layer regulation in the Alxa desert.

Leaf functional traits allow plant survival and maintain their ecosystem function. Salinity affects leaf functional traits, but coordination among leaf functional traits is poorly known and may depend on salt severity. To increase our understanding of the coordination of leaf functional traits under salt stress, we determined hydraulic, gas exchange, and physiological and biochemical parameters in Populus euphratica Oliv. (P. euphratica) grown under salinity treatments, as well as gas exchange parameters under different CO2 concentrations. We found that P. euphratica can reinforce its hydraulic capacity by increasing the water transfer efficiency of both its leaves and stems when a salinity threat occurs for a specific duration of stress. Its stems were more adaptable than leaves. The economic and hydraulic traits of P. euphratica leaves were consistent during the middle stages of salt stress, but inconsistent during the onset and late stages of salt stress. There was almost no biochemical limitation under severe salinity conditions, and CO2 enrichment of P. euphratica had a greater effect on leaf economic traits. The mechanism of toxic ion exclusion based on water availability and intracellular mechanisms in leaves contributed to salt tolerance when P. euphratica was exposed to salinity stress. There was also a coordination mechanism for the plants during increasing salt stress. The leaf intracellular traits of P. euphratica can coordinate with the leaf economic and hydraulic traits and form a defense mechanism to reduce salt damage and guarantee growth under saline conditions. In conclusion, P. euphratica, the main constructional species of riparian forests, adapts to saline environments by adjustment and coordination of leaf functional traits, ensuring survival. These results provide a scientific basis for riparian forest restoration.

Afforestation as an effective measure for wind and sand control has achieved remarkable results in northern China, and has also greatly changed the land use and vegetation characteristics of the region. It is important to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of soil water content (SWC) in different afforestation years and its temporal stability to understand the dynamic characteristics of SWC during afforestation. In order to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamic characteristics of SWC in desert area Haloxylon ammodendron (HA)plantations, in this study, five restorative-aged HA plantations in desert areas were selected and their SWC was measured in stratified layers for the 0–400 cm soil profile; we also analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics and temporal stability of the SWC. The results showed that the SWC of HA plantations decreased with the increase in planting age in the measurement period, and the SWC of deep layers increased by more than that of shallow layers with planting age. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients for SWC of 0–400 cm in both 5- and 11-year-old HA plantations reached above 0.8 and were highly significantly correlated; the temporal stability of SWC tends to increase as the depth of the soil layer deepens. In contrast, the temporal stability of SWC in deeper layers (200–400 cm) of 22-, 34- and 46-year-old stands showed a decreasing trend with depth. Based on the relative difference analysis, representative sampling points can be selected to monitor the regional average SWC, but for older HA plantations, the uncertainty factor of stand age should be considered in the regional moisture simulation. This study verified that it is feasible to simulate large-scale SWC in fewer observations for HA plantations younger than 11 years old, while large errors exist for older stands, especially for deeper soils. This will help soil moisture management in HA plantations in arid desert areas.

In desert ecosystems, ephemeral plants have developed specialized water use strategies in response to long-term natural water stress. To examine the water use strategies of desert ephemeral plants under natural extreme drought conditions, we investigated the water absorption sources, water potential, hydraulic conductivity, and water use efficiency of Ferula bungeana at different elevations on the slopes of mega-dunes in the Badain Jaran Desert, Inner Mongolia, during a period of extreme drought. We found that the water utilized by F. bungeana was mostly absorbed from the 0–60 cm soil layers (80.47 ± 4.28%). With progression of the growing season, the source of water changed from the 0–30 cm soil layer to the 30-60 cm layer. The water potentials of the leaves, stems, and roots of F. bungeana were found to be characterized by clear diurnal and monthly variation, which were restricted by water availability and the hydraulic conductivity of different parts of the plant. The root hydraulic conductivity of F. bungeana was found to be considerably greater than that of the canopy, both of which showed significant diurnal and monthly variation. The water use efficiency of F. bungeana under extreme drought conditions was relatively high, particularly during the early and late stages of the growing season. Variations in water availability led to the regulation of water uptake and an adjustment of internal water conduction, which modified plant water use efficiency. These observations tend to indicate that the water use strategies of F. bungeana are mainly associated with the growth stage of plants, whereas the distribution pattern of plants on mega-dunes appeared to have comparatively little influence. Our findings on the water use of ephemeral plants highlight the adaptive mechanisms of these plants in desert habitats and provide a theoretical basis for selecting plants suitable for the restoration and reconstruction of desert ecosystems.

Study region: This study focuses on three data-limited inland river basins in the arid Hexi Corridor, Northwest China. Study focus: The lack of ground-based observation data for estimating potential evapotranspiration (PET) usually limits the streamflow simulation. This study explored the feasibility of using three gridded PET datasets (GLDAS, GLEAM, and ERA5) to force the hydrologic model. The hydrologic performance of these PET datasets was investigated using the HBV-light model. New hydrological insights for the region: The results show that GLEAM performs best in estimating PET on both a daily and monthly scale. GLDAS generally captures the seasonal variations and patterns well but shows a higher estimation in magnitude. For the hydrological simulation, all three PET datasets can be used as forcing data to drive the HBV-light model, as the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values are greater than 0.64 during the validation period for the three PET inputs in the three basins. The magnitude and temporal signal of PET forcing data do not significantly affect streamflow simulations of the HBV-light. The model mainly adjusts the water content of the soil box (WCS) to eliminate the efficiency loss caused by the PET magnitude difference to achieve the best simulation results.

Land desertification associated with climate change and human activities significantly impacts ecosystem functioning in semi-arid alpine mountains. However, accurately revealing the state of desertification risk and the drivers of its evolution is frequently difficult, especially in the semi-arid alpine mountains. A new theoretical framework that combined qualitative and quantitative concepts has been developed to enhance ecological risk assessment in semi-arid alpine mountains and reveal the causes of desertification. The PSR model, multi-layer hierarchical theory, hierarchical analysis, inverse cloud generating principles, field surveys, structured questionnaires, and remote sensing techniques are all combined in this method. Our results showed that the risk of desertification in the study area exhibited a fluctuating trend between 2000 and 2020, with a period of decrease, followed by an increase, and then a subsequent decrease. However, the risk status remained overall stable, remaining at a light desertification level during the entire period. Desertification risk is driven primarily by climate warming and humidification, which can cause the melting of ice/snow. Additionally, increased rainfall and freeze–thaw cycles can enhance soil erosion, further exacerbating the risk. Conversely, the implementation of environmental protection projects, such as the establishment of protected areas, efforts to restore forests and grasslands, and initiatives to conserve soil and water, has been effective in limiting the increase in desertification risk. These efforts serve as a counterforce to the negative impacts of climate change and human activity, highlighting the beneficial effects of human intervention in preventing desertification. High-altitude, high-topographic relief places have considerable desertification risk, mainly in the alpine desert. Due to geography, grazing, rodent and pest infestation, and wildlife, there is still a risk of desertification expanding in low elevation areas. There will be a greater urgency in the future to enhance the management of anthropogenic activities in the local environment in order to handle the growing threat of desertification caused by climate change. This study combined the interactions of the natural environment and human activities, filled a research gap in assessing desertification risk, and revealed its driving mechanisms, as well as provided a theoretical foundation for improving the integrity and sustainability of ecosystems in semi-arid alpine regions and elsewhere.

The impact of climate change on surface runoff and soil moisture in the source region of the Yellow River is analyzed, which will provide a scientific basis for the rational use and protection of water resources in the source area. In this paper, the SWAT hydrological model was coupled with the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) to predict future changes in surface runoff and soil moisture in the source region of the Yellow River. The prediction of surface runoff and soil moisture in the Yellow River Basin was analyzed by a linear regression model. The SWAT model rate had a calibration period R2 of 0.876 and a validation period R2 of 0.972. The trend of surface runoff and annual mean temperature in the source region of the Yellow River from 2011 to 2022 showed an overall increasing trend, and soil moisture showed a general decreasing trend. 2011–2022 trends between surface runoff and annual mean temperature in the source region of the Yellow River showed a highly significant difference, indicating that surface runoff flow was significantly influenced by temperature. The difference between the trends in soil moisture and the annual mean temperature was highly significant. The surface runoff fluctuated greatly in different years, and the surface runoff changed greatly in different scenarios of CMIP5 (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5). For all three climate change scenarios, the surface runoff displayed a downward trend. The surface runoff showed a similar uneven distribution for all scenarios on a yearly cycle. Under the three climate scenarios, the runoff was highest between May and August, with a slowly increasing trend from January to April and a slightly decreasing trend from September to December. The interannual and interannual distribution of soil water was basically consistent with the distribution of surface runoff, and there was an overall trend in the length of all soil water reduction scenarios. Surface runoff and soil moisture are and will be greatly affected by climate change (mainly temperature and precipitation). Under the three climate scenarios, the precipitation increases to some extent, but the surface runoff and soil moisture will both decrease, which may be attributed to the greater evaporation than the precipitation.

Wetlands play an important role in water storage and water conservation, but with global climate change, the degradation of wetland ecosystems is accelerating. In this study, we conducted research on the current situation and future prediction of water quality in typical wetlands in the source region of the Yangtze River to provide a scientific basis for the protection and restoration of wetlands in the source region of the Yangtze River. The Bayesian water quality assessment method and Yao Zhiqi evaluation method were used to evaluate the water quality of typical wetlands in the source region of the Yangtze River from 2016 to 2021 and based on the climate change scenarios of three RCPs (Representative Concentration Pathways) under the CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5) global climate model and SWAT (soil and water assessment tool) hydrological model, the wetland water quality in the source region of the Yangtze River from 2022 to 2100 was predicted. The results show that the inter-annual changes in CODMn, NH3-N, and TN in a typical wetland show a downward trend, while the temperature and DO concentration show an upward trend from 2016–2021. The changes in CODMn, temperature, and conductivity within the year are abundant season > flat season > dry season; and DO, NH3-A, TN, and TP concentrations within the year are opposite. The water quality of typical wetlands in the source region of the Yangtze River has reached Class II and above. From 2022 to 2100, under climate change in the future, TN, TP, CODMn, NH3-N, and temperature in the wetland water in the source region of the Yangtze River will continue to rise, and the concentration of DO will continue to decline. Therefore, the pressure on water resources in the source region of the Yangtze River is further aggravated, so it is urgent to strengthen water resources protection.

With the disturbance of human factors, the groundwater resources in the source region of the Yellow River have gradually depleted and the water quality has become worse, which has seriously affected the development of high-altitude areas. The groundwater quality of the source region of the Yellow River from 2016 to 2020 was evaluated using single-component and comprehensive evaluation methods, following by a prediction of the groundwater quality from 2021 to 2100 based on the RCPS (RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5) scenarios coupled with the SWAT hydrological model under the CMIP5 global climate model. The results indicated that the groundwater temperature had an increasing trend, pH showed an obvious decreasing trend, and total hardness (Th), sulfate, and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) contents exhibited no obvious increasing or decreasing trend in the source region of the Yellow River during 2016–2020. The increase rate of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the future climate scenario followed the order of RCP 8.5 > RCP 4.5 > RCP 2.6, and the groundwater contents of TN and TP in the source region of the Yellow River gradually increased. This result is of great significance, as it can help clarify the current situation of groundwater in high-altitude and cold regions, showing the influence of groundwater on global climate change. It provides a reference for the development and utilization planning of groundwater resources in the source region of the Yellow River in the future.

Populus euphratica Oliv., a pioneer species of desert riparian forest, is characterized heterophylly. To understand the adaptation strategies of the heteromorphic leaves of P. euphratica to soil drought, we assessed the structural and functional characteristics of the heteromorphic leaves at different heights in suitable soil moisture conditions (groundwater depth 1.5 m) and drought conditions (groundwater depth 5 m), which include morphology, anatomical structure, photosynthetic capacity, water use efficiency, osmotic adjustment capacity, and endogenous hormones. These results indicate that leaf area, leaf thickness, fence tissue, palisade-to-sea ratio, main vein xylem area, vessel area, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and proline, MDA, IAA, GA3, and ZR contents showed a positive correlation with the tree height under the two soil moisture conditions, but leaf shape index, leaf water potential (LWP), and ABA content showed a decreasing trend. In addition, the main vein vascular bundle area, main vein xylem area, and contents of malondialdehyde, ABA, GA3, and IAA were significantly greater under soil drought conditions than normal soil water content. Under soil drought stress, the heteromorphic leaves of P. euphratica showed more investment in anatomical structure and greater water use efficiency, proline, and hormone contents, and synergistic changes to maintain high photosynthetic efficiency. This is an adaptation strategy to water stress caused by soil drought and tree height changes.

Haloxylon ammodendron is a desert shrub widely used as a windbreak and for sand fixation, and it has achieved remarkable results in China. However, in desert areas, large-scale afforestation increases soil water consumption and forms a dried soil layer (DSL), the development of which seriously threatens the sustainable development of the ecosystem. In this study, soil moisture in the 0–400 cm soil profile was measured in selected 5-, 11-, 22-, 34-, and 46-year-old plantations of Haloxylon ammodendron plantations in Alxa Legue, China, and three soil desiccation evaluation indices were calculated—the soil desiccation index (SDI), DSL thickness (DSLT), and DSL soil water content (DSL-SWC)—to analyze the change pattern of the soil water content for different stand ages. The results showed that the shallow water layer (0–200 cm) was depleted sharply in the first five years of Haloxylon ammodendron plantation growth, but no DSL developed; the inflection point of soil water content change appeared after 10 years of growth, after which the shallow soil water was depleted and the drying process of the deep soil water content was significantly faster than that in the early growth period. The deep soil layer (200–400 cm) was depleted seriously after 22 years of afforestation, the soil drying phenomenon was obvious, and the DSL developed from the 172 cm soil layer. After 46 years of afforestation, the DSL was fully developed and the DSL-SWC was only 0.034 cm3 cm−3. Priority should thus be given to the use of less water-consuming shrub species; alternatively, after 5 years of growth of Haloxylon ammodendron plantations, certain water control measures should be taken to maintain the soil water balance.

The sparse natural vegetation develops special water use characteristics to adapt to inhospitable desert areas. The water use characteristics of such plants in desert areas are not yet completely understood. In this study, we compare the differences in water use characteristics between two dominant species of the Badain Jaran Desert mega-dunes—Zygophyllum xanthoxylum and Artemisia ordosica—by investigating δ2H and δ18O in plant xylem (the organization that transports water and inorganic salts in plant stems) and soil water, and δ13C in plant leaves. The results indicate that Z. xanthoxylum absorbed 86.5% of its water from soil layers below 90 cm during growing seasons, while A. ordosica derived 79.90% of its water from the 0–120 cm soil layers during growing seasons. Furthermore, the long-term leaf-level water use efficiency of A. ordosica (123.17 ± 2.13 μmol/mol) was higher than that of Z. xanthoxylum (97.36 ± 1.16 μmol/mol). The differences in water use between the two studied species were mainly found to relate to their root distribution characteristics. A better understanding of the water use characteristics of plants in desert habitats can provide a theoretical basis to assist in the selection of species for artificial vegetation restoration in arid areas.

Badain Jaran Desert, the coexistence of dunes and lakes, and the presence of the world’s tallest dunes, has attracted worldwide attention among hydrologists. Freshwater, brackish, and saline lakes coexistence in the Badain Jaran Desert under extremely arid environmental conditions. This raises the question of why diverse lake water types exist under the same climatic conditions. Answering this question requires the characterization of lake hydrochemistry and the main controlling factors. The purpose of the presented research was to systematically analyzed samples from 80 lakes using statistical analysis, correlation analysis and hydrogeochemical methods to investigate the hydrochemical status and evolution of lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert. The results showed that the lake water in Badain Jaran Desert is generally alkaline, with the average pH and TDS were 9.31 and 165.12 g L−1, respectively. The main cations to be Na+ and K+, whereas the main anions are Cl− and SO42−. HCO3− and CO32− decreased and SO42− and Cl− increased from southeast to northwest, whereas lake hydrochemistry changed from the SO42−-Cl−-HCO3− type to the SO42−-Cl− type and lakes transitioned from freshwater to saline. The freshwater and slightly brackish lakes are mainly distributed in the piedmont area at a high altitude near the Yabulai Moutains, whereas saline lakes are mainly distributed in the desert hinterland at a low altitude, and there is a roughly increasing trend of ions from the Yabulai Mountains. The evaporation-crystallization reactions are the dominant in the study region. Moreover, some saline mineral deposits, are extensive in these regions caused by intense evaporation-crystallization.

Assessment of the effects of climate change and land use/cover change (LUCC) on the flow regimes in watershed regions is a fundamental research need in terms of the sustainable water resources management and ecosocial developments. In this study, a statistical and modeling integrated method utilizing the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been adopted in two watersheds of northeastern Tibetan Plateau to separate the individual impacts of climate and LUCC on the flow regime metrics. The integrated effects of both LUCC and climate change have led to an increase in the annual streamflow in the Yingluoxia catchment (YLC) region and a decline in the Minxian catchment (MXC) region by 3.2% and 4.3% of their total streamflow, respectively. Climate change has shown an increase in streamflow in YLC and a decline in MXC region, occupying 107.3% and 93.75% of the total streamflow changes, respectively, a reflection of climatic latitude effect on streamflow. It is thus construed that the climatic factors contribute to more significant influence than LUCC on the magnitude, variability, duration, and component of the flow regimes, implying that the climate certainly dominates the flow regime changes in northeastern Tibetan Plateau.

This study aims to project future variability of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) using artificial intelligence methods, constructed with an extreme-learning machine (ELM) and support vector regression (SVR) in a mountainous inland watershed in north-west China. Eight global climate model (GCM) outputs retrieved from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) were employed to downscale monthly ET0 for the historical period 1960–2005 as a validation approach and for the future period 2010–2099 as a projection of ET0 under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. The following conclusions can be drawn: the ELM and SVR methods demonstrate a very good performance in estimating Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-56 Penman–Monteith ET0. Variation in future ET0 mainly occurs in the spring and autumn seasons, while the summer and winter ET0 changes are moderately small. Annually, the ET0 values were shown to increase at a rate of approximately 7.5 mm, 7.5 mm, 0.0 mm (8.2 mm, 15.0 mm, 15.0 mm) decade−1, respectively, for the near-term projection (2010–2039), mid-term projection (2040–2069), and long-term projection (2070–2099) under the RCP4.5 (RCP8.5) scenario. Compared to the historical period, the relative changes in ET0 were found to be approximately 2%, 5% and 6% (2%, 7% and 13%), during the near, mid- and long-term periods, respectively, under the RCP4.5 (RCP8.5) warming scenarios. In accordance with the analyses, we aver that the opportunity to downscale monthly ET0 with artificial intelligence is useful in practice for water-management policies.
