Transparent photoresists with a high refractive index (RI) and high transmittance in visible wavelengths have promising functionalities in optical fields. This work reports a kind of tunable optical material composed of titanium dioxide nanoparticles embedded in acrylic resin with a high RI for ultraviolet (UV)-imprint lithography. The hybrid film exhibits a tunable RI of up to 1.67 (589 nm) after being cured by UV light, while maintaining both a high transparency of over 98% in the visible light range and a low haze of less than 0.05%. The precision machining of optical microstructures can be imprinted easily and efficiently using the hybrid resin, which acts as a light guide plate (LGP) to guide the light from the side to the top in order to conserve the energy of the display device. These preliminary studies based on both laboratory and commercial experiments pave the way for exploiting the unparalleled optical properties of nanocomposite resins and promoting their industrial application.

FERMT2 has been identified as a participant in integrin-linked kinase signaling pathways, influencing epithelial-mesenchymal transition and thereby affecting tumor initiation, progression, and invasion. While the character of FERMT2 in the tumor microenvironment (TME) as well as its implications for immunotherapy remain unclear. Thus, we conducted a comprehensive analysis to assess the prognostic significance of FERMT2 using Kaplan-Meier analysis. In addition, we employed enrichment analysis to uncover potential underlying molecular mechanisms. Using ''Immunedeconv'' package, we evaluated the immune characteristics of FERMT2 within TME. Furthermore, we determined the expression levels of FERMT2 in various cell types within TME, based on single-cell sequencing data. To confirm the co-expression of FERMT2 and markers of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), we performed multiplex immunofluorescence staining on tissue paraffin sections across various cancer types. Our analysis disclosed a significant correlation between elevated FERMT2 expression and unfavorable prognosis in specific cancer types. Furthermore, we identified a strong correlation between FERMT2 expression and diverse immune-related factors, including immune checkpoint molecules, immune cell infiltration, microsatellite instability (MSI), and tumor mutational burden (TMB). Additionally, there was a significant correlation between FERMT2 expression and immune-related pathways, particularly those associated with activating, migrating, and promoting the growth of fibroblasts in diverse cancer types. Interestingly, we observed consistent co-expression of FERMT2 in both malignant tumor cells and stromal cells, particularly within CAFs. Notably, our findings also indicated that FERMT2, in particular, exhibited elevated expression levels within tumor tissues and co-expressed with α-SMA in CAFs based on the multiplex immunofluorescence staining results.

Abstract Background Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) may be attributed to the up-regulation of the cholinergic receptor nicotinic alpha 1 subunit (CHRNA1) in eccrine glands. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI1, encoded by SERPINE1) is reported to inhibit the expression of CHRNA1, while the role of PAI1 in hyperhidrosis is unknown. Methods Serpine1 KO mice, Serpine1-Tg mice, and wild type BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with pilocarpine hydrochloride to induce PFH. Cisatracurium (CIS, antagonist of CHRNA1) or PAI-039 (small-molecule inhibitor of PAI1) was pre-administrated before the induction of hyperhidrosis. On the other hand, Chrna1-expressing AAV was constructed and administered to Serpine1-Tg mice with hydrochloride stimulation. Hydrochloride-related biomarkers, such as acetylcholine (ACH) in the serum, calcium voltage-gated channel subunit alpha1 C (CACNA1C), and aquaporin 5 (AQP5) in sweat glands of mice were assayed with ELISA, RT-PCR, and Western blot. Results The administration of PAI-039 or Pai1 knock-out increased Chrna1 expression, sweat secretion, and hydrochloride-related biomarkers (ACH, CACNA1C, and AQP5) expression. On the other hand, CIS administration diminished the strengthened hyperhidrosis phenotype induced by Pai1 knock-out with decreased sweat gland secretion. Conclusion PAI1 inhibits CHRNA1-mediated hydrochloride-induced hyperhidrosis, with decreased sweat gland secretion and diminished ACH, AQP5, and CACNA1C expression. These results indicate the potential to utilize PAI1 to alleviate PFH.

ObjectiveTo investigate the incidence and influencing factors of hyperuricemia (HUA) among elderly physical examinees from a community of Shanghai city and to provide evidences for community-based control of HUA risk factors of and management of HUA-related chronic diseases. MethodsWith cluster sampling, we recruited 6 673 elderly residents (60 years and above) with normal serum uric acid and without gout history from routine physical examinees at a community health service center in Shanghai city during March – May 2018 and conducted a one-year follow-up study among the participants. Cox stepwise regression model was applied to explore influencing factors of HUA incidence. ResultsThe follow-up was completed in 84.64% (5 648) of all the participants, with a total of 6 384.18 person-years of follow-up and a median of 1.12 years of follow-up for each participant. For the 5 617 participants with valid information during the follow up period, the HUA incidence density (1/1 000 person-years) was 63.44 (52.34 for the males and 72.15 for the females); the crude cumulative incidence rate of HUA were 7.21% (5.95% for the males and 8.20% for the females) and the standard cumulative incidence rate of HUA and 7.58% (6.00% for the males and 8.98% for the females), respectively. Multivariate Cox stepwise regression model analysis showed that hypertension, central obesity, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and coronary heart disease were risk factors for HUA incidence; while with an education of middle school and above was a protective factor against HUA incidence among the community elderly physical examinees. ConclusionThe HUA incidence rate was relatively high and correlated with central obesity and several chronic diseases among elderly physical examinees in a community of Shanghai city. The results suggest that intervention on risk factors of HUA needs to be promoted among community populations.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with transition metal phosphides has been studied extensively as potential photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. However, in-situ approaches to realize intimate interfacial contacts have rarely been reported. In this study, Ni2P nanoparticles-decorated g-C3N4 photocatalysts were prepared via liquid exfoliation of g-C3N4 followed by in-situ loading of Ni2P nanoparticles in a rotating packed bed (RPB) reactor. The optimized Ni2P/g-C3N4 exhibits high performance in visible-light-driven (λ > 420 nm) hydrogen evolution (∼561 μmol g−1 h−1), which is 103 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4. The superior photocatalytic performance and durability originate from the robust interfacial structure. Therefore, a Z-scheme route with enhanced transfer of photoinduced electron was proposed, and Ni2P/g-C3N4 composites with smaller bandgaps than those of g-C3N4 were realized. Due to the intensified mass transfer and mixing of RPB reactor, the adsorption and nucleation processes of Ni2P on g-C3N4 were enhanced, enabling scalable solar light-driven H2 production.

Abstract Background Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) after distal gastrectomy impacts patients’ nutritional status and quality of life. The current treatments of DGE seem unsatisfactory or need invasive interventions. It is unknown whether transcutaneous electroacupuncture (TEA) is effective in treating DGE. Methods A total of 90 eligible participants who underwent distal gastrectomy will be randomly allocated to either the TEA group (n = 60) or the sham transcutaneous electroacupuncture (sham-TEA) group (n = 30). Each participant will receive TEA on the bilateral acupoints of Zusanli (ST36) and Neiguan (PC6) for 4 weeks. The primary outcomes will be the residual rates of radioactivity in the stomach by gastric scintigraphy and total response rates. The secondary outcomes will be endoscopic features, autonomic function, nutritional and psychological status, serum examination, and quality of life (QoL). The adverse events will also be reported. The patients will be followed up 1 year after the treatment. Discussion The findings of this randomized trial will provide high-quality evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of long-term TEA for treating DGE after distal gastrectomy. Pollution involving pharmaceutical components in bodies of water is an increasingly serious environmental issue. Plasma discharge for the degradation of antibiotics is an emerging technology that may be relevant toward addressing this issue. In this work, a plasma-assisted rotating disk reactor (plasma-RDR) and a photocatalyst—namely, titanium dioxide (TiO2)—were coupled for the treatment of metronidazole (MNZ). Discharge uniformity was improved by the use of a rotating electrode in the plasma-RDR, which contributed to the utilization of ultraviolet (UV) light radiation in the presence of TiO2. The experimental results showed that the degradation efficiency of MNZ and the concentration of generated hydroxyl radicals respectively increased by 41% and 2.954 mg∙L−1 as the rotational speed increased from 0 to 500 r∙min−1. The synergistic effect of plasma-RDR plus TiO2 on the generation of hydroxyl radicals was evaluated. Major intermediate products were identified using three-dimensional (3D) excitation emission fluorescence matrices (EEFMs) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and a possible degradation pathway is proposed herein. This plasma-catalytic process has bright prospects in the field of antibiotics degradation.

Abstract Background Until January 18, 2021, coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) has infected more than 93 million individuals and has caused a certain degree of panic. Viral pneumonia caused by common viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, human bocavirus, and parainfluenza viruses have been more common in children. However, the incidence of COVID-19 in children was significantly lower than that in adults. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical manifestations, treatment and outcomes of COVID-19 in children compared with those of other sources of viral pneumonia diagnosed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods Children with COVID-19 and viral pneumonia admitted to 20 hospitals were enrolled in this retrospective multi-center cohort study. A total of 64 children with COVID-19 were defined as the COVID-19 cohort, of which 40 children who developed pneumonia were defined as the COVID-19 pneumonia cohort. Another 284 children with pneumonia caused by other viruses were defined as the viral pneumonia cohort. The epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory findings were compared by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Contingency table method. Drug usage, immunotherapy, blood transfusion, and need for oxygen support were collected as the treatment indexes. Mortality, intensive care needs and symptomatic duration were collected as the outcome indicators. Results Compared with the viral pneumonia cohort, children in the COVID-19 cohort were mostly exposed to family members confirmed to have COVID-19 (53/64 vs. 23/284), were of older median age (6.3 vs. 3.2 years), and had a higher proportion of ground-glass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography (18/40 vs. 0/38, P

Masks have become one of the most indispensable pieces of personal protective equipment and are important strategic products during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Due to the huge mask demand–supply gap all over the world, the development of user-friendly technologies and methods is urgently needed to effectively extend the service time of masks. In this article, we report a very simple approach for the decontamination of masks for multiple reuse during the COVID-19 pandemic. Used masks were soaked in hot water at a temperature greater than 56 °C for 30 min, based on a recommended method to kill COVID-19 virus by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. The masks were then dried using an ordinary household hair dryer to recharge the masks with electrostatic charge to recover their filtration function (the so-called “hot water decontamination + charge regeneration” method). Three kinds of typical masks (disposable medical masks, surgical masks, and KN95-grade masks) were treated and tested. The filtration efficiencies of the regenerated masks were almost maintained and met the requirements of the respective standards. These findings should have important implications for the reuse of polypropylene masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. The performance evolution of masks during human wear was further studied, and a company (Zhejiang Runtu Co., Ltd.) applied this method to enable their workers to extend the use of masks. Mask use at the company was reduced from one mask per day per person to one mask every three days per person, and 122 500 masks were saved during the period from 20 February to 30 March 2020. Furthermore, a new method for detection of faulty masks based on the penetrant inspection of fluorescent nanoparticles was established, which may provide scientific guidance and technical methods for the future development of reusable masks, structural optimization, and the formulation of comprehensive performance evaluation standards.

Herein, we report on the effect of a high gravity field on metal-free catalytic reduction, taking the nitrobenzene (NB) reduction and methylene blue (MB) degradation as model reactions in a high-gravity rotating tube reactor packed with three-dimensional (3D) nitrogen-doped graphene foam (NGF) as a metal-free catalyst. The apparent rate constant (kapp) of the metal-free catalytic reduction of NB in the rotating tube reactor under a high gravity level of 6484g (g = 9.81 m·s−2) was six times greater than that in a conventional stirred reactor (STR) under gravity. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations indicated that the improvement of the catalytic efficiency was attributed to the much higher turbulent kinetic energy and faster surface renewal rate in the high-gravity tube reactor in comparison with those in a conventional STR. The structure of the 3D metal-free catalysts was stable during the reaction process under a high gravity field, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectra. In the other model reaction, the rate of MB degradation also increased as the high gravity level increased gradually, which aligns with the result for the NB catalytic reduction system. These results demonstrate the potential to use a high-gravity rotating packed tube reactor for the process intensification of metal-free catalytic reduction reactions.

Abstract Background Since the National Malaria Elimination Action Plan was launched in China in 2010, local malaria transmission has decreased rapidly. Zero indigenous cases were reported since 2017. However, after 2010, the proportion of imported cases in China increased from 45.7% in 2010 to 99.9% in 2016, and almost all provinces of China have reported imported cases in recent years. Prevention of the reintroduction of malaria into China is crucial for the maintenance of its malaria-free status. Hence, it is of utmost importance to correctly identify the source of malaria infections within the country. Case introduction and response In 2016 and 2017, three laboratory-confirmed cases of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum were identified in patients with no previous travel history to endemic areas were reported in Jiangsu Province, China, where malaria due to P. falciparum was eliminated about 30 years ago. These were diagnosed after 41, 31 and 39 days of seeking treatment, respectively, and all of them had received blood transfusions. Further investigations indicated that two of the cases had received blood from foreign students (from Indonesia and Ghana), and the other had received blood from an individual who had worked in Equatorial Guinea. All three blood donors were traced, and found to be carrying asymptomatic P. falciparum infections by microscopic examination and PCR. Furthermore, five polymorphic microsatellite markers (C1M4, C4M62, C13M13, C14M17, and C13M63) were typed and used to link parasites from the donors with those of the transfusion-receiving patients. Conclusions Three transfusion-transmitted malaria cases were identified in China, all of which were due to the transfusion of blood donated by individuals who had contracted malaria outside the country. These cases can provide a reference for those faced with similar challenges in malaria case identification and classification in other regions. In addition, a stricter screening policy including the use of appropriate detection methods for malaria parasites should be developed and adopted for blood donation in regions undergoing malaria elimination.

Abstract Sustainable solutions on fabricating and using a face mask to block the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) spread during this coronavirus pandemic of 2019 (COVID‐19) are required as society is directed by the World Health Organization (WHO) toward wearing it, resulting in an increasingly huge demand with over 4 000 000 000 masks used per day globally. Herein, various new mask technologies and advanced materials are reviewed to deal with critical shortages, cross‐infection, and secondary transmission risk of masks. A number of countries have used cloth masks and 3D‐printed masks as substitutes, whose filtration efficiencies can be improved by using nanofibers or mixing other polymers into them. Since 2020, researchers continue to improve the performance of masks by adding various functionalities, for example using metal nanoparticles and herbal extracts to inactivate pathogens, using graphene to make masks photothermal and superhydrophobic, and using triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to prolong mask lifetime. The recent advances in material technology have led to the development of antimicrobial coatings, which are introduced in this review. When incorporated into masks, these advanced materials and technologies can aid in the prevention of secondary transmission of the virus.

(E)-7-Phenyl-2-hepten-4,6-diyn-1-ol (1) and (Z)-7-Phenyl-2-hepten-4,6-diyn-1-ol (2) are isomeric natural polyacetylenes isolated from the Chinese medicinal plant Bidens pilosa L. This study first revealed the excellent anti-metastasis potential of these two polyacetylenes on human gastric cancer HGC-27 cells and the distinctive molecular mechanisms underlying their activities. Polyacetylenes 1 and 2 significantly inhibited the migration, invasion, and adhesion of HGC-27 cells at their non-toxic concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. The results of a further mechanism investigation showed that polyacetylene 1 inhibited the expressions of Vimentin, Snail, β-catenin, GSK3β, MST1, YAP, YAP/TAZ, and their phosphorylation, and upregulated the expression of E-cadherin and p-LATS1. In addition, the expressions of various downstream metastasis-related proteins, such as MMP2/7/9/14, c-Myc, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, MAPK, p-MAPK, Sox2, Cox2, and Cyr61, were also suppressed in a dose-dependent manner. These findings suggested that polyacetylene 1 exhibited its anti-metastasis activities on HGC-27 cells through the reversal of the EMT process and the suppression of the Wnt/β-catenin and Hippo/YAP signaling pathways.

Nigrosporins B, an anthraquinone derivative obtained from the secondary metabolites of marine fungus Nigrospora oryzae. In this study, we characterized the distinctive anti-cancer potential of Nigrosporins B in vitro and underlying molecular mechanisms in human cervical cancer Ca Ski cells for the first time. The results of MTT assay showed that Nigrosporins B significantly inhibited the proliferation of multiple tumor cells in a dose-dependent manner, especially for the Ca Ski cells with an IC50 of 1.24 µM. Nigrosporins B exerted an apoptosis induction effect on Ca Ski cells as confirmed by flow cytometry, AO/EB dual fluorescence staining, mitochondrial membrane potential analysis and western blot assay. In addition, Nigrosporins B induced obvious autophagy accompanied with the increase of autophagic vacuoles and the acceleration of autophagic flux as indicated by Cyto-ID staining, mRFP-GFP-LC3 adenovirus transfection and western blot analysis. Interestingly, the combination of Nigrosporins B with the three autophagy inhibitors all significantly enhanced the cytotoxicity of Nigrosporins B on Ca Ski cells, indicating that the autophagy induced by Nigrosporins B might protect Ca Ski cells from death. Furthermore, we found that Nigrosporins B inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K, AKT, mTOR molecules and increased the protein expression levels of PTEN and p-AMPKα in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that Nigrosporins B induced apoptosis and protective autophagy through the suppression of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Together, these findings revealed the anti-cervical cancer effect of Nigrosporins B and the underlying mechanism of action in Ca Ski cells, it might be as a promising alternative therapeutic agent for human cervical cancer.

Background: Treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) remains to be a challenge due to limited insights for its pathogenesis. We aimed to determine the role of O-Linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) in the development of CD and evaluate therapeutic effects of O-GlcNAc inhibitors on CD. Methods: O-GlcNAc in intestinal epithelial tissues of CD, adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) LF82-infected cells and mice was determined by immunoblot and immunohistochemistry. AIEC LF82 and dextran sulfate sodium were administrated into C57BL/6 mice for estabolishing inflammatory bowel disease model and for therapeutic study. Findings: O-GlcNAc was increased in intestinal epithelial tissues of CD patients and AIEC LF82-infected mice. Infection of AIEC LF82 up-regulated the level of UDP-GlcNAc and increased O-GlcNAc in human colon epithelial HCT116 and HT-29 cells. We identified that IKKβ and NF-κB were O-Glycosylated in AIEC LF82-treated cells. Mutations of IKKβ (S733A) and p65 (T352A) abrogated the O-GlcNAc in IKKβ and NF-κB and inhibited AIEC LF82-induced activation of NF-κB. Application of 6-diazO-5-oxO-L-norleucine, an agent that blocks the production of UDP-GlcNAc and inhibits O-GlcNAc, inactivated NF-κB in AIEC LF82-infected cells, enhanced the formation of autophagy, promoted the removal of cell-associated AIEC LF82, alleviated intestinal epithelial inflammation, and improved the survival of the colitis mice. Interpretation: Intestinal inflammation in CD is associated with increased O-GlcNAc modification, which is required for NF-κB activation and suppression of autophagy. Targeting O-GlcNAc could be an effective therapy for inflammatory bowel disease. The optimization techniques are explored in the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation based on single acoustic pressure gradient vector sensor (APGVS). By analyzing the working principle and measurement errors of the APGVS, acoustic intensity approaches (AI) and the minimum variance distortionless response beamforming approach based on single APGVS (VMVDR) are deduced. The radius to wavelength ratio of the APGVS must be not bigger than 0.1 in the actual application, otherwise its DOA estimation performance will degrade significantly. To improve the robustness and estimation performance of the DOA estimation approaches based on single APGVS, two modified processing approaches based on single APGVS are presented. Simulation and lake trial results indicate that the performance of the modified approaches based on single APGVS are better than AI and VMVDR approaches based on single APGVS when the radius to wavelength ratio is not bigger than 0.1, and the two modified DOA estimation methods have excellent estimation performance when the radius to wavelength ratio is bigger than 0.1.

This paper studies the joint estimation problem of ranges, DOAs, and frequencies of near-field narrowband sources and proposes a new computationally efficient algorithm, which employs a symmetric uniform linear array, uses eigenvalues together with the corresponding eigenvectors of two properly designed matrices to estimate signal parameters, and does not require searching for spectral peak or pairing among parameters. In addition, the proposed algorithm can be applied in arbitrary Gaussian noise environment since it is based on the fourth-order cumulants, which is verified by extensive computer simulations.
