Previous studies have found associations between the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and exposure to air pollution or road traffic noise. However, investigations on environmental co-exposures are limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between co-exposure to air pollution and road traffic noise and MetS and its subcomponents. Participants living in Taipei City who underwent at least two health checkups between 2010 and 2016 were included in the study. Data were sourced from the MJ Health database, a longitudinal, large-scale cohort in Taiwan. The monthly traffic noise exposure (L den and L night ) was computed using a dynamic noise map. Monthly fine particulate data at one kilometer resolution were computed from satellite imagery data. Cox proportional hazards regression models with month as the underlying time scale were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the impact of PM 2.5 and road traffic noise exposure on the risk of developing MetS or its subcomponents. Data from 10,773 participants were included. We found significant positive associations between incident MetS and PM 2.5 (HR: 1.88; 95% CI 1.67, 2.12), L den (HR: 1.10; 95% CI 1.06, 1.15), and L night (HR: 1.07; 95% CI 1.02, 1.13) in single exposure models. Results further showed significant associations with an elevated risk of incident MetS in co-exposure models, with HRs of 1.91 (95% CI 1.69, 2.16) and 1.11 (95% CI 1.06, 1.16) for co-exposure to PM 2.5 and L den , and 1.90 (95% CI 1.68, 2.14) and 1.08 (95% CI 1.02, 1.13) for co-exposure to PM 2.5 and L night . The HRs for the co-exposure models were higher than those for models with only a single exposure. This study provides evidence that PM 2.5 and noise exposure may elevate the risk of incident MetS and its components in both single and co-exposure models. Therefore, preventive approaches to mitigate the risk of MetS and its subcomponents should consider reducing exposure to PM 2.5 and noise pollution., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Northwest Guizhou is a karst area with a high geological background. Affected by historical soil zinc smelting, the heavy metal content of atmospheric dust in the region is high, and soil pollution is severe. In order to explore the accumulation pathway of heavy metals in leafy vegetables, Chinese cabbage was used as the test crop, and the geological high background soil and zinc smelting-contaminated soil with the same contents of Cd, Pb, and Zn were selected. A pot experiment was carried out in the polluted area of zinc smelting and the non-polluting control area. The heavy metal content, enrichment coefficient (BCF), and transport coefficient (TF) of Chinese cabbage were studied under open-air, plastic mulching film, and greenhouse cultivation conditions. The results showed that the contents of Cd, Pb, and Zn in Chinese cabbage in the polluted area and the control area were 0.10-1.01 and 0.10-0.91 mg·kg -1 , 0.31-0.62 and 0.23-0.37 mg·kg -1 , and 7.50-32.74 and 4.88-21.79 mg·kg -1 , respectively. Overall, the contents of heavy metals in the polluted area were relatively high. The contents of Cd and Pb in Chinese cabbage planted in soil with a high geological background met the requirements of the national food safety standard limits. Affected by atmospheric deposition, the contents of Pb and Zn in Chinese cabbage in the polluted area were significantly higher than that in the control area, and the difference in Cd was insignificant. The proportions of weak acid-soluble Cd, Pb, and Zn in the contaminated soil were 48%, 3.0%, and 16%, respectively, which were 3.15, 1.01, and 1.57 times higher than those in the control soil with a high geological background. Affected by the activity of heavy metals, the contents of Cd and Zn in Chinese cabbage planted in the contaminated soil exceeded the national standard and were significantly higher than those in the control soil. The root-soil BCF of Cd, Pb, and Zn in polluted soil was significantly higher than that in the control soil, and the BCF of Cd and Zn was higher than that of Pb. The TF aboveground root Cd and Zn in Chinese cabbage was significantly higher than in the control soil, whereas the TF aboveground root Pb in the polluted area was significantly higher than that in the control area. The Pb content of Chinese cabbage in the two study areas showed open field>plastic mulching film>greenhouse cultivation. In conclusion, the content of Cd and Zn in Chinese cabbage was greatly affected by the activity of heavy metals in soil, and the main accumulation pathway was root absorption and transportation. In addition to root absorption, atmospheric deposition was an important accumulation pathway of Pb. Therefore, in areas with high geological backgrounds, attention should be paid to controlling the exposure risk of Cd and Zn in leafy vegetables planted on exogenously polluted soils. Additionally, greenhouse cultivation could effectively reduce the accumulation of Pb.

The magnetization measurement was performed in the Bi 0.3 Sb 1.7 Te 3 single crystal. The magnetic susceptibility revealed a paramagnetic peak independent of the experimental temperature variation. It is speculated to be originated from the free-aligned spin texture at the Dirac point. The ARPES reveals that the Fermi level lies below the Dirac point. The Fermi wavevector extracted from the de Haas-van Alphen oscillation is consistent with the energy dispersion in the ARPES. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a discontinuity at Néel temperature and a hysteresis loop with low coercive field was observed below Néel temperature. The magnetic susceptibility of zero field cool and field cool processes coincide at a temperature above the discontinuity, and they split at temperature blow the discontinuity. The magnetic susceptibility splitting is larger at lower external magnetic fields. No more magnetic susceptibility splitting was observed at a magnetic field above 7000 Oe which is consistent with the magnetic anisotropy energy. According to the super-position principle of the reinforcement of biological activities, a series of novel E-substituted 2, 3-diaryl propenoic acyloxy phosphonate derivatives were designed and synthesized. And the structures of the target compounds were confirmed by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and elemental analysis. Furthermore, the cytotoxicities of all compounds on A-549, SGC-7901 and EC-109 in vitro were evaluated by MTT assay, and some of them showed good antitumor activity. Among the active compounds, especially, the IC50 value of compound 3e was (12.7 ± 1.9) μmol x L(-1) against A-549 cells, similar to cisplatin [IC50 = (8.0 ± 1.5) μmol x L(-1)], compounds 3g and 3k had better inhibition effect on EC-109 cells growth, with the IC50 values of (9.5 ± 1.8) μmol x L(-1) and (11.5 ± 0.9) μmol x L(-1) respectively, and compounds 3i and 3k exhibited good cytotoxic property on A-549, SGC-7901 and EC-109, which were worth further investigation.

The physico-chemical properties and hydration kinetics of Gleditsia sinensis gum were investigated to evaluate its temperature dependence. The increase of temperature resulted in improved solubility of G. sinensis gum, and the dissolved galactomannan showed decreased degree of galactose substitution (DSGal) and increased molecular weight (p<0.05, ANOVA). The solubility of G. sinensis galactomannan at 25, 45, 60 and 80 °C was 73.4, 83.8, 98.1, and 99.4%, respectively. Weibull and Logarithmic models were well fitted (R(2)>0.96), and the hydration index t0.8 at different temperatures varied in the range of 51-302 min. Enzymatic hydrolysis of Gleditsia sinensis gum was performed to produce manno-oligosaccharides having functional applications as dietary fiber and prebiotics. The optimum hydrolysis conditions, including enzyme loading, temperature and time, from response surface methodology were 8.1 U/g, 57.4 °C and 34.1 h, respectively. The yield of DP 1-5 oligosaccharides was 75.9% (29.1 g/L). The Michaelis-Menten kinetics and molecular weight distribution were determined. The obtained oligosaccharides were further separated by HPLC and SEC, and the galactose distribution of G. sinensis gum was elucidated. The micronutrients in many cellular processes, riboflavin (vitamin B(2)), FMN, and FAD are photo-sensitive to UV and visible light to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The riboflavin photochemical treatment with UV light has been applied for the inactivation of microorganisms to serve as an effective and safe technology. Ultra-violet or high-intensity radiation is, however, considered as a highly risky practice. This study was working on the application of visible LED lights to riboflavin photochemical reactions to development an effective antimicrobial treatment. The photosensitization of bacterial genome with riboflavin was investigated in vitro and in vivo by light quality and irradiation dosage. The riboflavin photochemical treatment with blue LED light was proved to be able to inactivate E. coli by damaging nucleic acids with ROS generated. Riboflavin is capable of intercalating between the bases of bacterial DNA or RNA and absorbs lights in the visible regions. LED light illumination could be a more accessible and safe practice for riboflavin photochemical treatments to achieve hygienic requirements in vitro., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. A biosurfactant, named tea saponin (TS), was isolated and purified from the defatted seed of Camellia oleifera Abel. The characterization of TS including molecular weight, glycosyl composition, and thermal behavior as well as the surface and foaming properties was conducted. The synergistic interactions of binary systems of CTAB-TS, SDS-TS, and Brij35-TS were investigated. The results show that TS had a weight-average molecular weight of 809.12 g mol(-1) and contained four aglycones of L-rhamnose, D-galactose, D-glucose, and D-glucuronic acid. The critical micelle concentration (cmc) of 2.242 mmol L(-1) and the minimum surface tension (γ(cmc)) of 43.5 mN m(-1) were determined for TS. Synergisms in surface tension reduction efficiency, in mixed micelle formation, and in surface tension reduction effectiveness were observed in CTAB-TS and SDS-TS systems, whereas that was not shown in Brij35-TS mixtures. The mixtures of TS with CTAB and SDS showed synergism in foaming efficiency, but this synergism did not exist in Brij35-TS system with respect to the surface properties. Background: Seed galactomannans are preferred hydrocolloids since they are comparatively cheap, non-toxic, eco-friendly and non-polluting during production and application. Galactomannans from seeds of three species of Gleditsia, namely G. sinensis, G. microphylla and G. melanacantha, were characterized in terms of structural and thermal properties., Results: Gleditsia polysaccharides were characterized using both chemical and chromatographic methods, as well as Fourier transform infrared, (1) H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and (13) C NMR spectroscopy, and it was shown that they consist of D-mannopyranose and D-galactopyranose residues. The mannose/galactose (M/G) ratio of galactomannans was 3.25, 3.31 and 2.30, respectively. It was also found that these polysaccharides differ from one another in values of M(w) , M(n) and polydispersity. X-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of Gleditsia galactomannans, although G. sinensis galactomannan showed a high crystallinity. Thermal analysis of the galactomannans by differential scanning calorimetry illustrated that their endothermic peaks ranged from 290 to 320 °C., Conclusion: Gleditsia polysaccharides are neutral galactomannans.
