In order to timely understand the research status and hot spots as well as the development trends of photodynamic sterilization worldwide, this paper adoptes bibliometrics method to analyze the research literatures in the filed of photodynamic sterilization which is collected through the core database of Web of Science from 2002 to 2022, aiming to provide references for researchers in related research fields. Meanwhile, the visualization analysis of different countries and regions, institutions and authors are carried out by the Citespace software, the cluster analysis and emergence analysis of the keywords in the field of photodynamic sterilization research are performed. According to the analysis, the selection and transformation of photosensitizers, the selection and optimization of light sources, and the extension of food shelf life are the research fields of photodynamic sterilization technology in the field of food. In addition, photodynamic combines with other cold sterilization technologies to enhance sterilization effect will also be a promising research field in the coming future.

The activation of brown adipose tissue by cold exposure in paternal mice has been reported to improve the metabolic health of offspring. Notably, dietary components for activating BAT have drawn considerable attention owing to their high feasibility for human trials. Therefore, here the potential metabolic improving effects of dietary capsaicin intervention on diet-induced obese paternal mice and their offspring were measured. The results support that paternal preconceptional capsaicin intervention not only elicited the anticipated enhancement of brown fat activity in obese paternal mice, but also improved the metabolic profiles in male offspring evidenced by their elevated resistance to high-fat diet challenge. Moreover, changes in sperm DNA methylation and small non-coding RNA profile were noted in paternal mice with capsaicin intervention, though additional investigation is needed to further delve into the mechanisms. In summary, paternal dietary intervention activating BAT could represent a promising strategy for enhancing the metabolic health of offspring.

Endocrine disruptors, also known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, could mimic or interfere with the body's hormones. Indeed, naturally occurring endocrine disruptors have been widely identified in daily foods. Moreover, industrialisation has resulted in increasing synthetic endocrine disruptors being produced and used as food additives or in food package materials, which makes exposure to endocrine disruptors become more common. Although the safety of synthetic chemicals has been extensively evaluated before entering into the food industry, increasing evidence has also highlighted that long-lasting exposure might influence long-term metabolic outcomes and be associated with the prevalence of obesity. Therefore, this review summarised the sources, detection methods, obesogenic effects and possible mechanisms of endocrine disruptors commonly found in foods, as well as discussed possible underlying mechanisms by which endocrine disruptors contribute to the increased risk of obesity. In conclusion, the review may provide useful information for understanding the association between endocrine disruptors and obesity, which could provide a new angle of view for preventing obesity prevalence.

Radiotherapy stands as a cornerstone in the treatment of numerous malignant tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer. However, the critical challenge of amplifying the tumoricidal effectiveness of radiotherapy while minimizing collateral damage to healthy tissues remains an area of significant research interest. Radiosensitizers, by methods such as amplifying DNA damage and fostering the creation of free radicals, play a pivotal role in enhancing the destructive impact of radiotherapy on tumors. Over recent decades, nano-dimensional radiosensitizers have emerged as a notable advancement. Their mechanisms include cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase, combating tumor hypoxia, and others, thereby enhancing the efficacy of radiotherapy. This review delves into the evolving landscape of nanomaterials used for radiosensitization in non-small cell lung cancer. It provides insights into the current research progress and critically examines the challenges and future prospects within this burgeoning field.

The hepcidin peptide of crescent sweetlips (Plectorhinchus cinctus) is a cysteine-rich, cationic antimicrobial peptide that plays a crucial role in the innate immune system’s defense against invading microbes. The aim of this study was to identify the optimal parameters for prokaryotic expression and purification of this hepcidin peptide and characterize its antibacterial activity. The recombinant hepcidin peptides were expressed in Escherichia coli strain Arctic Express (DE3), with culture and induction conditions optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The obtained hepcidin peptides were then purified before tag cleavage, and their antibacterial activity was determined. The obtained results revealed that induction temperature had the most significant impact on the production of soluble recombinant peptides. The optimum induction conditions were determined to be an isopropylthio-β-galactoside (IPTG) concentration of 0.21 mmol/L, induction temperature of 18.81 °C, and an induction time of 16.01 h. Subsequently, the recombinant hepcidin peptide was successfully purified using Ni-IDA affinity chromatography followed by SUMO protease cleavage. The obtained hepcidin peptide (without His-SUMO tag) demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity in vitro against V. parahaemolyticus, E. coli, and S. aureus. The results showed prokaryotic (E. coli) expression is a feasible way to produce the hepcidin peptide of crescent sweetlips in a cost-effective way, which has great potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent in aquaculture.

With WHO announcing COVID-19 no longer as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on May 5, 2023, coupled with the fact that the majority of the countries of the world have dropped strict city lockdown or border closure, this perhaps signals the end of the COVID-19 crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in far-reaching effects affecting nearly every aspect of our lives and society. Notably, the food industry including agriculture, food manufacturers, food logistics, distributors and retailers have all felt the profound impact and had experienced significant stress during the pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to retrospect the lessons that can be learned from this pandemic for the food industry. This short review aims to address the food safety issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic by focusing on its foodborne transmission potential, innovations of virus detection strategies suitable for food industry; development of phathogenicaidal methods and devices to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 virus (particularly in industrial scale); and the set-up of related food regulations and guidelines as preventive and control measures for preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus through the food supply chain during the pandemic. This article may provide useful references for the food industry to minimize the food safety impact of COVID-19 (as well as other respiratory virus) and allows them to better prepare for similar future challenges.

Chlorogenic acid has been widely reported to profoundly influence preadipocyte differentiation but without consensus being achieved. In the current study, 3 T3-L1 preadipocytes were differentiated using adipogenic cocktail with or without chlorogenic acid. The influences of chlorogenic acid on the mRNA, lipid and phospho-kinase profiles were evaluated using transcriptomic analysis, lipidomic analysis and phospho-kinase array assay. The obtained results showed that chlorogenic acid treatment during 3T3-L1 cells differentiation altered a series of genes transcription, resulted in obvious changes in the contents of various lipids, and inhibited phosphorylation of several adipogenesis-related kinases. Overall, the observed changes in transcriptomic, lipidomic and phospho-kinase profiles in the current study favor the findings that chlorogenic acid may inhibit the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. In conclusion, the findings from this study highlighted the therapeutic potential of chlorogenic acid for the treatment of obesity.

Pleurotus eryngii (PE) has been sought after for its various health benefits and high content of phenolic compounds. This study explored the feasibility of steam explosion (SE)-assisted extraction of polysaccharides with high antioxidant capacities from PE. An orthogonal experimental design (OED) was used to optimize the SE-assisted extraction of PE. The influence of the optimized SE-assisted extraction on the physicochemical properties of PE polysaccharides was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), monosaccharide compositional analysis and antioxidant capacity assays. Under optimal SE conditions, SE-assisted extraction increased the polysaccharide yield by 138% compared to extraction without SE-assistance. In addition, SEM demonstrated that SE-assisted extraction markedly altered the spatial structure of Pleurotus eryngii polysaccharides (PEP), and monosaccharide compositional analysis revealed that this pretreatment significantly increased the proportions of some monosaccharides, such as glucose, rhamnose and arabinose, in the isolated PEP. FTIR spectra indicated no change in the major chemical functional groups of PEP. PEP extracted by SE-assisted extraction had significantly increased free radical scavenging and antioxidant capacities. In conclusion, SE-assisted extraction appears to be a novel polysaccharide extraction technology, which markedly increases extraction yields and efficiency and can increase the biological activity of polysaccharide extracts.

In order to solve the problems such as poor stability and rapid precipitation of passion fruit juice, the influence of the different stabilizers on the stability of passion fruit juice was explored using the automatic stability analyzer based on the space and time resolved extinction profiles technology (STEP-Technology) in the current study. The sedimentation rate, the integral transmittance and transmission infrared spectrum were selected as the main indexes to determine the stabilizing effects of agar and/or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) on the passion fruit juice stability. Results showed that, addition of CMC-Na resulted smoother light extinction curves compared to agar, indicating CMC-Na might exert better stabilizing effects when single stabilizer was used. The optimal stabilizing effect being obtained by addition of CMC-Na at 0.30%~0.35% with the lowest settlement rates ((0.0209±0.0003) %/s and (0.0181±0.0002) %/s, respectively) being recorded. When these two stabilizers were applied simultaneously, it was found that increase in CMC-Na and decrease in agar led to the smoother light extinction curves and enhanced stability of juice. The optimal stability were reached by addition of 0.35% CMC-Na+0.15% agar and 0.30% CMC-Na+0.20% agar, which showed the lowest settlement rates ((0.0231±0.0004) %/s and (0.0209±0.0004) %/s, respectively). These findings could provide a scientific basis for the development of passion fruit juice with improved stability.

Pre-eclampsia is one of the most common pregnancy complications, and a major cause of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality globally. Diagnosis currently takes place in the third trimester based on clinical symptoms. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to determine the blood biomarkers that are associated with pre-eclampsia, and in particular, the biomarkers that could predict pre-eclampsia in early pregnancy. We searched the electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library) from inception up to March 2022. Prospective studies with 1000 or more participants that measured blood biomarkers to predict or diagnose pre-eclampsia have been included in this systematic review. Biomarkers’ measurements were considered from the first up to the third trimester, but not during labor. Data concerning pre-eclampsia, biomarker measurements and study characteristics were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed when possible. We found a total of 43 studies (assessing 62 different biomarkers in 18,170 pregnancies, have been included in this systematic review, and a total of 6 studies (assessing 2 biomarkers have been included in the meta-analysis). Statistical analysis was performed for PlGF and sFlt-1. Mean difference in PlGF levels between pre-eclampsia and healthy pregnancies, appear to increase as the pregnancy progresses. Results of sFlt-1 meta-analysis were inconclusive. No significant publication bias was identified. This is the most comprehensive and up to date systematic review and meta-analysis on this important topic on blood biomarkers for the early prediction of pre-eclampsia. Further This research highlights the urgent needed for further discovery research to identify blood biomarkers that could predict the development of pre-eclampsia.

Polyoxometalates have emerged as promising bactericidal agents. In the current study, the bactericidal activity of polyoxometalate K6[P2Mo18O62] against Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 and its possible underlying mechanisms were explored. The obtained results demonstrated that K6[P2Mo18O62] could effectively kill E. coli O157:H7 at millimolar levels. Moreover, K6[P2Mo18O62] treatment also induced significant increases in recA protein expression and further triggered characteristic apoptosis-like bacterial death events such as DNA fragmentation and phosphatidylserine exposure. In conclusion, polyoxometalate K6[P2Mo18O62] possesses a desirable antibacterial activity, and induction of bacterial apoptosis-like death might be involved in its underlying bactericidal mechanisms.

(1) Background: An increasing amount of research has supported the role of radiomics for predicting pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment (nCRT) in order to provide better management of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients. However, the lack of validation from prospective trials has hindered the clinical adoption of such studies. The purpose of this study is to validate a radiomics model for pCR assessment in a prospective trial to provide informative insight into radiomics validation. (2) Methods: This study involved a retrospective cohort of 147 consecutive patients for the development/validation of a radiomics model, and a prospective cohort of 77 patients from two institutions to test its generalization. The model was constructed using T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted, and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI to understand the associations with pCR. The consistency of physicians’ evaluations and agreement on pathological complete response prediction were also evaluated, with and without the aid of the radiomics model. (3) Results: The radiomics model outperformed both physicians’ visual assessments in the prospective test cohort, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84 (95% confidence interval of 0.70–0.94). With the aid of the radiomics model, a junior physician could achieve comparable performance as a senior oncologist. (4) Conclusion: We have built and validated a radiomics model with pretreatment MRI for pCR prediction of LARC patients undergoing nCRT.

Abstract The current study was aimed to explore the beneficial effects of polysaccharides isolated from Laminaria japonica (LP) on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) mice. The obtained results demonstrated that the LP improved serum biochemical index, body weight index, and glucose tolerance. Furthermore, the evidence also suggested that the beneficial effects of LP might be attributed to the alternation in gut microbiota by LP supplementation. Particularly, the Turicibacter, a short‐chain fatty acids‐producing bacterium, was found to be up‐regulated. In conclusion, the obtained results indicated that the LP might serve as prebiotic, and might have a great potential to be used as food supplementation for GDM patients.

Foodborne diseases caused by foodborne pathogens pose risks to food safety. Effective detection and efficient inactivation of pathogenic bacteria has always been a research hotspot in the field of food safety. Complicating these goals, bacteria can be induced to adopt a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state under adverse external environmental stresses. When in the VBNC state, pathogens cannot form visible colonies during traditional culture but remain metabolically active and toxic. The resulting false negative results in growth-related assays can jeopardize food safety. This review summarizes the latest research on VBNC foodborne pathogens, including induction conditions, detection methods, mechanism of VBNC formation, and possible control strategies. It is hoped that this review can provide ideas and methods for future research on VBNC foodborne pathogenic bacteria.

Food allergy is a serious food safety and public health issue. However, the medical interventions for allergy treatment are still suboptimal. Recently, the gut microbiome–immune axis has been considered as a promising target to reduce the symptoms of food allergy. In this study, we explore the oral administration of lotus-seed resistant starch as a means to protect against food allergy using an ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge rodent model. The results obtained showed that lotus-seed resistant starch intervention alleviated the food allergy symptoms (such as reductions in body temperature and allergic diarrhea). Furthermore, lotus-seed resistant starch also attenuated the increase in OVA-specific immunoglobulins and improved Th1/Th2 imbalance in OVA-sensitized mice. These anti-allergic effects might be associated with the actions of lotus-seed resistant starch on intestinal microbiota. Taken together, our findings suggest that daily ingestion of lotus-seed resistant starch might be effective for the alleviation of food allergy.

To overcome the low water solubility and low bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), multiple delivery strategies have been proposed. Among these, cyclodextrin-based carriers have been widely used for the encapsulation and delivery of CUR. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as natural oligosaccharides, have been well known for their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and internal hydrophobic and external hydrophilic structural features. This paper summarizes the recently reported CD-based carriers for encapsulating CUR. Particularly, the polymerization properties of CD self-assembly to enhance the encapsulation of CUR are discussed. In addition, the current progress on stimuli-responsive CD carriers for controlled release of CUR is described, which laid an important foundation for the development of CUR-based precision therapy in clinical practice. In conclusion, this review may provide ideas for the future development of a CD-based encapsulant for CUR.

Shrimp surimi is widely acknowledged as a value-added shrimp product due to its delicious taste, rich flavor, and nutrition. However, the refrigerated shrimp surimi is prone to deterioration due to rapid microbial growth during storage. The present study sought to assess the effects of curcumin-mediated sono/photodynamic treatment on bacterial spoilage and shrimp surimi quality stored at 4 °C. The total viable count (TVC), microbiota composition, and quality parameters, including the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARs), and pH were investigated. The results showed that the spoilage bacteria in shrimp surimi rapidly increased with a surge on day 2 during refrigeration storage. The Psychrobacter and Brochothrix were identified as the Specific Spoilage Organisms (SSOs), which were also positively correlated with TVB-N and TBARs. The results further elucidated that the sono/photodynamic treatment could significantly inhibit the growth of SSOs on the surface and interior of shrimp surimi and delay shrimp surimi quality deterioration. In conclusion, the sono/photodynamic treatment as a non-thermal sterilization method could be a reliable and potential method for inactivating spoilage microorganisms and preserving shrimp surimi quality.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a common pathogen that causes diarrhea in humans and animals. In particular, E. coli can easily form biofilm on the surface of living or non-living carriers, which can lead to the cross-contamination of food. This review mainly summarizes the formation process of E. coli biofilm, the prevalence of biofilm in the food industry, and inhibition methods of E. coli biofilm, including chemical and physical methods, and inhibition by bioactive extracts from plants and animals. This review aims to provide a basis for the prevention and control of E. coli biofilm in the food industry.

Polyphenols are found in free and bound forms in foods, both of which exert a wide range of pharmacological and therapeutic effects. Here, 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mice were used to investigate the potential anti-obesity effect of bound phenolics extracted from lotus seeds (LBP). Phenolic compounds including protocatechuic, caffeic and ellagic acids were identified in LBP. In vitro results showed LBP significantly decreased intracellular lipid accumulation; while oral administration of LBP was found to retard body weight gain and improve plasma lipid profile in HFD-induced mice. Moreover, LBP increased phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) accompanied with down-regulation of adipogenic/lipogenic genes (Pparγ, C/ebpα, aP2, Srebp-1c, Acc1, Fas, Lpl) expression; and up-regulation of lipolytic genes (Hsl, Pgc-1α, Sirt1, Cpt1α) and adipokine adiponectin expression. Taken together, these observations suggested lotus seeds bound phenolics may alleviate obesity, in part by modulating the AMPK signaling pathway.

Background: Polyphenols are a class of plant secondary metabolites with a variety of physiological functions. Polyphenols and their intestinal metabolites could greatly affect host energy metabolism via multiple mechanisms. Objective: The objective of this review was to elaborate the role of intestinal microecology in the regulatory effects of dietary polyphenols and their metabolites on energy metabolism. Methods: In this review, we illustrated the potential mechanisms of energy metabolism regulated by the crosstalk between polyphenols and intestinal microecology including intestinal microbiota, intestinal epithelial cells, and mucosal immune system. Results: Polyphenols can selectively regulate the growth of susceptible microorganisms (eg. reducing the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria) as well as alter bacterial enzyme activity. Moreover, polyphenols can influence the absorption and secretion of intestinal epithelial cells, and alter the intestinal mucosal immune system. Conclusion: The intestinal microecology play a crucial role for the regulation of energy metabolism by dietary polyphenols.

Aging has become a global public health challenge. Many studies have revealed that the excessive generation of ROS and oxidative stress could be the major causative factors contributing to aging. In this study, R-phycocyanin (R-PC) was isolated from Porphyra haitanensis, and its anti-aging ability was explored by natural aging Drosophila melanogaster and H2O2-induced HUVEC cells as the aging model. Results showed that R-PC α and β subunits expressed have antioxidant activity and can inhibit the generation of radicals, exhibiting a protective effect against H2O2-induced apoptotic HUVEC cells death. R-PC prevented the H2O2-induced HUVEC cell cycle phase arrest by regulating cell cycle-related protein. Furthermore, R-PC prevented the H2O2-induced HUVEC cell cycle phase arrest by regulating cell-cycle-related protein expression. In vivo study also indicated that R-PC significantly increased the survival time and alleviated the oxidative stress of Drosophila melanogaster. Moreover, R-PC notably decreased levels of ROS in natural aging flies and inhibited lipid peroxidation by enhancing the expressions of the endogenous stress marker genes (SOD1, SOD2, CAT of Drosophila melanogaster). Taken together, a study on the antioxidation extract from Porphyra haitanensis, such as R-PC, may open a new window for the prevention of anti-aging.

High-amylose corn starch is well known for its anti-obesity activity, which is mainly based on the regulatory effects on gut microbiota. Recently, the gut microbiota has been reported to improve metabolic health by altering circulating bile acids. Therefore, in this study, the influence of high-amylose corn starch (HACS) on intestinal microbiota composition and serum bile acids was explored in mice fed with a high fat diet (HFD). The results demonstrated HACS treatment reduced HFD-induced body weight gain, hepatic lipid accumulation, and adipocyte hypertrophy as well as improved blood lipid profiles. Moreover, HACS also greatly impacted the gut microbiota with increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes relative abundance being observed. Furthermore, compared to ND-fed mice, the mice with HFD feeding exhibited more obvious changes in serum bile acids profiles than the HFD-fed mice with the HACS intervention, showing HACS might restore HFD-induced alterations to bile acid composition in blood. In summary, our results suggested that the underlying mechanisms of anti-obesity activity of HACS may involve its regulatory effects on gut microbiota and circulating bile acids.

Background: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is the most prevalent metabolic disorder during pregnancy, however, the association between dyslipidaemia and GDM remains unclear. Methods: We searched Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, Maternity and Infant Care database (MIDIRS) and ClinicalTrials.gov up to February 2021 for relevant studies which reported on the circulating lipid profile during pregnancy, in women with and without GDM. Publications describing original data with at least one raw lipid [triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C)] measurement were retained. Data extraction was performed using a piloted data extraction form. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019139696). Findings: A total of 292 studies, comprising of 97,880 pregnant women (28232 GDM and 69,648 controls) were included. Using random-effects meta-analysis models to pool study estimates, women with GDM had significantly higher (by 20%) TG levels, with a pooled weighted mean difference between GDM and non-GDM pregnancies of 0.388 mM (0.336, 0.439, p

Hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) is a nutritious marine product that has attracted increasing attention due to its bioactive compounds. In this study, the anti-fatigue properties of hairtail hydrolysate were evaluated by exhaustive swimming experiments. Results indicate hairtail peptide supplementation increased the exhaustive weight-loaded swimming time. Furthermore, decreases in blood lactic acid (BLA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatine kinase (CK), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content; and increases in glycogen content and antioxidant enzymes activities were observed in mice receiving hairtail peptides treatment after a 30 min swimming test. Pearson correlation analysis suggests fatigue indexes, including energy sources (hepatic glycogen and muscle glycogen content), metabolites (BLA and BUN content), and CK content significantly correlated with antioxidant levels (glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities and MDA content) and fecal SCFA content (propionic acid and butyrate acid content). In conclusion, long-term supplementation with hairtail peptides may improve exercise performance by relieving fatigue.

In the present study, an anti-bacterial film (Carr/POM film) was prepared through the incorporation of Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate K6[Mo18O62P2] into κ-carrageenan-based polymers using the tape-casting method. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, and morphology of the prepared film were characterized. The obtained results showed that incorporation of K6[Mo18O62P2] significantly affected the morphology and structure of the films. Moreover, the polyoxometalate-based film demonstrated desirable bactericidal activity against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). Carr/POM (@8 mg/mL) film resulted in an obvious inhibition zone around the film in Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test, which could also remove 99% of S. aureus and E. coli on plastic, glass, and stainless steel. In addition, this anti-bacterial film also demonstrated good biodegradability, which could be decomposed in soil in around 1 week. In conclusion, the polyoxometalate-based film showed good anti-bacterial property against food-borne pathogenic microbes, suggesting the prepared film has great potential to be developed as promising food packaging.

This study aimed at delineating the mechanism of the anti-angiogenic effect of chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced proliferation, migration, invasion and tube formation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) while the quantitative endogenous alkaline phosphatase assay and microscopic observation on zebrafish embryo model further confirmed its anti-angiogenic property. In addition, treatment of HUVECs with chlorogenic acid significantly decreased expression of angiogenic markers including angiopoietin-2, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and focal adhesion kinase. Proteomic profile analysis also revealed chlorogenic acid treatment reduced the multi-target expression including endoglin, endothelin-1 and interleukin-8 in HUVECs. The underlying mechanism may involve the reactive oxygen species scavenging activity of chlorogenic acid, which further attenuates the VEGFR2-mediated signaling and consequent phosphorylation of VEGFR2, extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 and serine-threonine kinase.

GPR43, a G-protein coupled receptor recognizing short-chain fatty acids, has been reported to participate in many biological functions of white adipocytes, such as adipogenesis and lipolysis. However, the functional role of GPR43 in brown adipocytes is still not clear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone on GPR43 expression in brown adipogenesis. The results demonstrated that GPR43 was expressed during the late phase of brown adipocyte differentiation, which could be further augmented by adipogenic agent rosiglitazone treatment. The PPARγ/RXR heterodimerization was found to be the key transcription factor for this enhancing effect of rosiglitazone on GPR43 expression. Taken together, these results suggested GPR43 levels might be regulated by PPARγ-activated events during brown adipocytes differentiation and reflect the adipogenesis status of brown adipocytes.

Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables are the main sources of foodborne illness outbreaks with implicated pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and Listeria monocytogenes. This study aimed at investigating the influence of two key parameters (concentration of curcumin and illumination time) on the effects of curcumin-based photodynamic sterilization on the preservation of fresh-cut Hami melons. The results indicated that illumination with 50 μmol/L curcumin for 60 min using a blue LED lamp reduced the total aerobic microorganism count by ~1.8 log CFU/g in fresh-cut Hami melons. Besides this, the effects of photodynamic sterilization on the soluble solids content, color, water content, firmness, and sensory indices of the fresh-cut Hami melons were also evaluated. Compared to the control group, photodynamic sterilization can effectively delay the browning rate and maintain the luminosity, firmness, water content, and soluble solids content of fresh-cut Hami melon. The sensory quality was indeed preserved well after 9 days of storage in a fridge. These results showed that photodynamic sterilization is an effective and promising technology to prolong the shelf life of fresh-cut Hami melons.

ObjectivesCartonectin is a novel adipokine of the C1q complement/TNF-related protein (CTRP) superfamily, with glucose lowering effects, anti-inflammatory and cardio-protective properties. We sought to investigate circulating cartonectin concentrations in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as well as age and BMI matched control subjects. We also examined the effects of a 2 hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) on serum cartonectin concentrations in T2DM subjects.DesignCross-sectional study [newly diagnosed (first discovery, not on any treatments) T2DM (n = 47) and control (n = 63) subjects]. Serum cartonectin was measured by ELISA.ResultsSerum cartonectin concentrations were significantly lower in patients with T2DM compared to controls (P0.05). There were no significant correlations in T2DM subjects (n = 47). In control subjects (n = 63), serum cartonectin was significantly negatively correlated with CRP, and significantly positively correlated with insulin, HOMA-IR and leptin. However, when subjected to multiple regression analysis, none of these variables were predictive of serum cartonectin (P>0.05). Finally, serum cartonectin concentrations were significantly lower in T2DM subjects after a 2 hour 75 g OGTT (PConclusionsCartonectin may serve as a novel biomarker for the prediction and early diagnosis of T2DM patients. Furthermore, cartonectin and/or pharmacological agents that increase circulating cartonectin levels can represent a new therapeutic field in the treatment of T2DM patients. Further research is needed to clarify these points.
