Heat processing is one of the most efficient strategies used in food industry to improve quality and prolong shelf life. However, conventional processing methods such as microwave heating, burning charcoal treatment, boiling, and frying are energy-inefficient and often lead to inferior product quality. Superheated steam (SHS) is an innovative technology that offers many potential benefits to industry and is increasingly used in food industry. Compared to conventional processing methods, SHS holds higher heat transfer coefficients, which can reduce microorganisms on surface of foodstuffs efficiently. Additionally, SHS generates a low oxygen environment, which prevents lipid oxidation and harmful compounds generation. Furthermore, SHS can facilitate development of desired product quality, such as protein denaturation with functional characteristics, proper starch gelatinization, and can also reduce nutrient loss, and improve the physicochemical properties of foodstuffs. The current work provides a comprehensive review of the impact of SHS on the nutritional, physicochemical, and safety properties of various foodstuffs including meat, fruits, and vegetables, cereals, etc. Additionally, it also provides food manufacturers and researchers with basic knowledge and practical techniques for SHS processing of foodstuffs, which may improve the current scope of SHS and transfer current food systems to a healthy and sustainable one.

Chloride channels (CLCs) are kinds of anion transport protein family members that are mainly distributed in cell endomembrane systems of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms and mediate anion (Cl-, as a representative) transport and homeostasis. Some CLC genes have been reported to be involved in Cl-/salt tolerance of plants exposed to NaCl stress. Through BLAST in cotton database, a total of 22 CLCs were identified in genomes A and D in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), and except for GhCLC6 and GhCLC17, they formed highly similar homologous genes pairs. According to the prediction in PlantCARE database, many cis-acting elements related to abiotic stress responses, including ABREs, AREs, GT-1s, G-boxes, MYBs, MYCs, etc., were found in the promoters of GhCLCs. qRT-PCR revealed that most GhCLC gene expression was upregulated in the roots and leaves of cotton seedlings under salt stress, and those of homologous GhCLC4/15, GhCLC5/16, and GhCLC7/18 displayed more obvious expression. Furthermore, according to leaf virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay and compared with the salt-stressed GhCLC4/15- and GhCLC7/18-silenced cotton plants, the salt-stressed GhCLC5/16-silenced plants displayed relatively better growth with significant increases in both Cl- content and Cl-/NO3- ratio in the roots and drop of the same parameters in the leaves. These results indicate that homologous GhCLC5/16, with the highest NaCl-induced upregulation of expression and the maximum number of MYC cis-acting elements, might be the key members contributing to cotton Cl-/salt tolerance by regulating the transport, interaction and homeostasis of Cl- and NO3-.

Epileptic networks are characterized as having two states, seizures or more prolonged interictal periods. However, cellular mechanisms underlying the contribution of interictal periods to ictal events remain unclear. Purpose and methods Persons with epilepsy (PWE) remain completely and permanently prohibited from driving in China currently. Previous studies have shown that a considerable proportion of PWE with uncontrolled seizures in China continue to drive motor vehicles. Discrepancy between Chinese policy and driving practices for PWE is potentially concerning. We conducted a preliminary online electronic questionnaire (e-questionnaire) survey among neurologists in China aiming to explore neurologists' attitudes toward the issue of driving among PWE. Results A total of 358 neurologists completed the e-questionnaire with a response rate of 75.8%. 50.3% of neurologists stated that they knew the driving restriction law in China. With respect to reporting of cases to relevant driving authorities, 82.4% of neurologists never directly report PWE, and 90.8% consider that it is PWE's responsibility to report themselves. 87.4% of physicians surveyed indicated that the lack of clearly-articulated guidelines is a major impediment to their routine discussions of driving fitness for PWE. Subgroup analysis indicated that 76.2% of epileptologists were of the opinion that persons with well-controlled epilepsy should be allowed to drive versus 56.2% of general neurologists (P Conclusion Currently, neurologists in China have a low awareness of the legal driving restriction for PWE and have highly varying practices with respect to counseling PWE about driving. According to our preliminary results, a clearly-articulated published national document for medical fitness for driving in China is necessary in order to standardize physicians' practices.

In order to reduce the power consumption of the round baler and improve the quality of the bale, the compression and relaxation characteristics of alfalfa were investigated with respect to moisture content, feeding speed, and steel roll speed. Experimental trials were performed by using a steel-roll fixed chamber round baler rotary compression test platform. Three moisture contents were prepared, 18%, 21%, and 24%. The feeding speeds were set at 1.11 m·s-1, 1.39 m·s-1, and 1.67 m·s-1, and the steel roll speeds were 106 r·min-1, 126 r·min-1, and 146r·min-1, respectively. The experimental data for these trails were collected and three compression models and a generalized Maxwell model were fitted to the pressure, density, or time data. The maximum compression pressure decreased with the increase of moisture content and increased with the increase of feeding speed, while the steel roll speed had no significant effect on the maximum compression pressure. The stress relaxation time decreased with the increase of moisture content, feeding speed and steel roll speed. The equilibrium stress decreased with the increase of the steel roll speed and moisture content and increased with the increase of the feeding speed. All compression models had a good fit for the experimental data.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is a rare condition characterized by recurrent brief episodes of dystonia, chorea, athetosis or any combination of these, without alterations of consciousness. The proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 (PRRT2) gene has been widely investigated as a causative gene of PKD. To date, a cluster of pathogenic variants associated with PKD have been identified in the PRRT2 gene. In the present case report, two Chinese patients with sporadic PKD are discussed. Genetic analysis revealed a de novo heterozygous missense mutation, c.955G>T (p.Val319Leu) in exon 3 of the PRRT2 gene. Compared with the commonly reported clinical manifestation of PRRT2-associated PKD, the patients in this report showed several primary distinctive features. The mutations identified in the present analysis expand upon the mutation spectrum of the PRRT2 gene, and this newly found variant further reinforces the importance of the PRR2 gene in PKD.

The use of two-dimensional nanostructured molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films in field-effect transistors (FETs) in place of graphene was investigated. Monolayer MoS2 films were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. The output and transfer curves of supported and suspended MoS2 FETs were measured. The mobility of the suspended device reached 364.2 cm2 V−1 s−1 at 150 °C. The hysteresis of the supported device in transfer curves was much larger than that of the suspended device, and it increased at higher temperatures. These results indicate that the device mobility was limited by Coulomb scattering at ambient temperature, and surface/interface phonon scattering at 150 °C, and the injection of electrons, via quantum tunneling through the Schottky barrier at the contact, was enhanced at higher temperatures and led to the increase of the hysteresis. The suspended MoS2 films show potential for application as a channel material in electronic devices, and further understanding the causes of hysteresis in a material is important for its use in technologies, such as memory devices and sensing cells.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures present as paroxysmal symptoms and signs mimicking epileptic seizures. The gold standard test is the synchronous recording by video, electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram. However, video electroencephalogram is not available at many centers and not entirely independent of semiology. Recent studies have focused on semiological characteristics distinguishing these two circumstances. Clinical signs and symptoms provide important clues when making differential diagnosis. The purpose of this review is to help physicians differentiating psychogenic nonepileptic seizures better from epileptic seizures based on semiology, and improve care for those patients.

The salt overly sensitive 1 (SOS1) gene encodes the plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter, SOS1, that is mainly responsible for extruding Na+ from the cytoplasm and reducing the Na+ content in plants under salt stress and is considered a vital determinant in conferring salt tolerance to the plant. However, studies on the salt tolerance function of the TrSOS1 gene of recretohalophytes, such as Tamarix, are limited. In this work, the effects of salt stress on cotton seedlings transformed with tobacco-rattle-virus-based virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of the endogenous GhSOS1 gene, or Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain K599-mediated TrSOS1-transgenic hairy root composite cotton plants exhibiting VIGS of GhSOS1 were first investigated. Then, with Arabidopsis thaliana AtSOS1 as a reference, differences in the complementation effect of TrSOS1 or GhSOS1 in a yeast mutant were compared under salt treatment. Results showed that compared to empty-vector-transformed plants, GhSOS1-VIGS-transformed cotton plants were more sensitive to salt stress and had reduced growth, insufficient root vigor, and increased Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio in roots, stems, and leaves. Overexpression of TrSOS1 enhanced the salt tolerance of hairy root composite cotton seedlings exhibiting GhSOS1-VIGS by maintaining higher root vigor and leaf relative water content (RWC), and lower Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio in roots, stems, and leaves. Transformations of TrSOS1, GhSOS1, or AtSOS1 into yeast NHA1 (Na+/H+ antiporter 1) mutant reduced cellular Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio, increased K+ level under salt stress, and had good growth complementation in saline conditions. In particular, the ability of TrSOS1 or GhSOS1 to complement the yeast mutant was better than that of AtSOS1. This may indicate that TrSOS1 is an effective substitute and confers enhanced salt tolerance to transgenic hairy root composite cotton seedlings, and even the SOS1 gene from salt-tolerant Tamarix or cotton may have higher efficiency than salt-sensitive Arabidopsis in regulating Na+ efflux, maintaining Na+ and K+ homeostasis, and therefore contributing to stronger salt tolerance.

Thioglycolic acid-modified CuInS2 quantum dots were prepared by a hydrothermal method. A method for the determination of sparfloxacin by a CuInS2 ternary-quantum dot fluorescence probe was established based on the fact that the fluorescence of CuInS2 quantum dots can be significantly quenched by sparfloxacin. The optimized experimental conditions are as follows: (1) the concentration of CuInS2 quantum dots is 0.4 mol·L−1; (2) the pH of the buffer solution is 6, and 1 mL of buffer was used; (3) the reaction time is 5 min. The concentration of sparfloxacin is linearly related to the fluorescence quenching intensity from 0.5 μg/mL to 1 mg/mL, and the maximum detection limit is 1 mg/mL.

Image sharing is an attractive research subject in computer image techniques and in the information security field. This article presents a novel scheme of image sharing with a ( t , n ) high-security threshold structure. The scheme can encode secret images into n shadow images in such a way that all the shadow images are in a perfect and ideal ( t , n ) threshold structure, while each shadow image has its own visual content assigned at random. The most common method to implement image sharing is based on interpolation polynomial over the field F p ={0, 1, 2,…, p -1} [Shamir 1979]. In this article, the authors present a new approach to image sharing and its computation based on algebraic-geometry code over the pixel value field GF(2 m ).

The aim of the current study was to find the epileptic focus and examine its causal relationship to other brain regions in children with new-onset benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 66 children with BECTS and 37 matched control children. We compared the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) signals between the two groups to find the potential epileptogenic zone (EZ), then used Granger causality analysis (GCA) to explore the causal effects of EZ on the whole brain. Children with BECTS had significantly increased ALFF in the right Broca’s area, and decreased ALFF in bilateral fusiform gyrus. The patients also showed increased driving effect from the EZ in Broca’s area to the right prefrontal lobe, and decreased effects to the frontal lobe and posterior parts of the language network. The causal effect on left Wernicke’s area negatively correlated with verbal IQ (VIQ) score. Our research on new-onset BECTS patients illustrates a possible compensatory mechanism in the language network at early stages of BECTS, and the negative correlation of GCA and VIQ suggest the disturbance of epileptiform activity on language. These findings shed light on the mechanisms of and language dysfunction in BECTS.

Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is one of the most common childhood epilepsy syndromes, and language deficits associated with BECTS have become a hot topic. This study investigated alterations of the language network in BECTS children with spikes from the non-dominant side in comparison with healthy controls. Twenty-three children with BECTS and 20 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Region of interest -based whole brain functional connectivity analysis was used to identify the potential differences in the functional connectivity of the Broca's area between the two groups. Increased positive functional connectivity within the Broca's region was detected mainly at the left superior frontal gyrus (Brodmann area 8), bilateral insula, and anterior and posterior cingulate in the BECTS group. No regions showed significantly decreased connection in the BECTS patients compared to the controls. This study suggested alterations in the language network that was related with the Broca's area in children with BECTS from the non-dominant side. Further studies with longitudinal assessments from the perceptive of functional neuroimaging are needed to illustrate the dynamic course of language development and corresponding neuroimaging evidence.

Purpose The deficit of white matter is reported to be involved during the disease progression in patients with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS). The aim of this study is to investigate patterns of white matter damage in children with BECTS with left- or right-hemispheric focus by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and its relationship with the cofactors such duration, seizure frequency and handedness. Methods Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed in twenty-eight children with BECTS and eighteen healthy controls. The data were analyzed using both tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and region of interest (ROI) analyses. Correlations were investigated between the fractional anisotropy (FA) values of the identified altered regions and clinical features such as age, age of onset and seizure frequency. Results The TBSS analysis revealed that white matter impairment in children with rolandic spikes on the ipsilateral hemisphere was much wider. The FA value was significantly lower in the body of the corpus callosum and forceps minor in BECTS patients with spikes on the ipsilateral hemisphere. The seizure frequency correlated positively with the FA values of body of corpus callosum (CC), bilateral cingulate gyrus and left uncinate fasciculi (UA). Conclusion The impaired WM integrity in patients with BECTS was greater in patients with spikes on the dominant hemisphere, possibly due to the greater vulnerability of the left hemisphere and excitotoxic effects of seizures.

To investigate the influence of magnetized hydroxyapatite on the growth and differentiation of osteoblasts, hydroxyapatite (HA) and magnetized hydroxyapatite (mHA) were synthesized and characterized. The cell viability, differentiation, and morphologies of osteoblasts were investigated in vitro, respectively. The results showed that compared to HA, cells cultured with mHA had better cell viability, and both HA and mHA were beneficial to the early differentiation of osteoblasts. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism between mHA and osteoblasts was elucidated using a molecular dynamics simulation. The simulation results indicated that when cultured with osteoblasts, HA adsorbed bovine serum protein onto its surface from the medium immediately, which was beneficial to the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblasts. The main driving force for the adsorption of bovine serum was the electronic properties of HA crystal faces. The (211) crystal face of HA had the highest electron density among its all crystal faces, thus mainly contributing to the protein adsorption of HA. Nevertheless, the (211) crystal face of mHA still had a relatively higher electron density than that of HA, thus possessing better protein adsorption than that of HA, and in turn promoting the biological functions of osteoblasts.

To exploit titanium implants with long-term antibacterial property, TiO 2 nanotubes were firstly generated onto titanium substrates via an anodization method, silver nanoparticles were then formed in situ within the TiO 2 nanotubes and a quaternary ammonium salt (QAS, 3-trimethoxysily-propyldimethyloctadecyl-ammonium chloride) was immobilized onto TiO 2 nanotubes. The successful construction of the antibacterial TiO 2 nanotubes was revealed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thin-film X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements, respectively. The antibacterial property of the prepared substrates was determined using zone of inhibition (ZoI) and antibacterial rates of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). The cytotoxicity of the substrates was evaluated with osteoblasts in vitro. The Ag nanoparticle loaded and QAS coated TiO 2 nanotube substrates (TiO 2 nanotube-Ag-QAS) demonstrated long-term antibacterial effect. Moreover, TiO 2 nanotube-Ag-QAS substrates displayed good biocompatibility. The study presented a promising approach to fabricate antibacterial titanium-based implants for orthopedic application.

Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy are at high risk for comorbid depression, and it is hypothesized that these two diseases are share common pathogenic pathways. We aimed to characterize regional brain activation in treatment-naïve temporal lobe epilepsy patients with depressive symptoms and compare the results to epilepsy patients without depressive symptoms and to healthy controls.We recruited 23 treatment-naïve patients (including anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) and antidepressants) and 17 matched healthy controls for this study. The patients were further divided into two groups: patients with depressive symptoms and patients without; the patients then used a self-rating depression scale (SDS) to assess their depression. All participants underwent resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans using the Trio Tim magnetic resonance (MR) image system (3.0 T). The data were processed and analyzed using REST and SPSS11.5 software.The patients with depressive symptoms showed significantly higher activity in the bilateral thalamus, insula and caudate and right anterior cingulate compared with the two other groups (p0.05, corrected). Brain network connectivity analysis revealed that connectivity decreased in the prefrontal-limbic system and increased within the limbic system and angular gyrus in patients with depressive symptoms (p0.05, corrected).The epilepsy patients with depressive symptoms showed regional brain activity alterations and disruption of the mood regulation network at the onset of seizures. The present study offers further insight into the underlying neuropathophysiology of epilepsy with depressive symptoms.

We evaluated data from a large cohort of newly diagnosed epilepsy patients from the biggest epilepsy center in West China. The aim was to determine the most prevalent etiologic factors in this region.From May 2008 to May 2010, the clinical data of patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy were consecutively, systematically and prospectively recorded in a database. The data were analyzed according to sex, age, seizure type, etiology, and other factors.The present study examined 892 patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy. Among these patients, 346 (38.8%) were confirmed as symptomatic, with the largest constituent ratio among the elderly (63.2%). In this symptomatic group, central nervous system (CNS) infections and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) were the two most common etiologies. When analyzed according to age bracket, cortical dysplasia, mesial temporal sclerosis, and CNS infection were the most frequent causes among young patients (18 years). On the other hand, CNS infection and TBI were the two most common causes in patients between 18 and 60 years. Stroke was the most common cause of newly diagnosed symptomatic epilepsy in the elderly (60 years).More than 30% of newly diagnosed epilepsy cases were shown to be symptomatic by medical history as well as careful clinical and laboratory examination. Detailed epilepsy assessments are essential to formulate a therapeutic plan and to improve prognosis. The etiology spectrum found in this large cohort forms a comparative baseline for future studies.

In this study, the theoretical structures of armchair (6, 6) and zigzag (12, 0) TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs) were constructed by rolling the (101) layer of an anatase TiO2 crystal. The (101) layer was made using Materials Studio (MS) by cutting the cleave plane (101) of the anatase TiO2 crystal. Based on these structures, the basic properties of TiO2 nanotubes were investigated using MS. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed using the software NAMD to investigate the status and permeation of water through the TiO2 nanotubes. Structure analysis shows that both the inner and outer walls of the structures were terminated with oxygen atoms. The thicknesses of single tube walls are smaller than that of a perfect triple layer (2.20 A) in bulk anatase TiO2. With regard to the bulk Ti–O bond length, the Ti–O bonds in the outer layer are elongated, and are shortened in the inner layer. To exploit titanium materials with anticancer and antibacterial properties, TiO(2) nanotubes arrays as nanoreservoirs for deposition of selenium were generated onto titanium substrates and then covered with chitosan layer. The deposition of selenium in TiO(2) nanotubes was performed with electrodeposition. The physical properties (surface morphologies, chemical compositions and wettability) of the substrates were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and contact angle measurement, respectively. The growth behaviors of both healthy osteoblasts and cancerous osteoblasts on the substrates were investigated in vitro. The selenium-deposited and chitosan-coated TiO(2) nanotubes substrates (TiO(2) nanotubes-Se-Chi) demonstrated great potential for promoting the proliferation of healthy osteoblasts and inhibiting the growth of cancerous osteoblasts. Meanwhile, the TiO(2) nanotubes-Se-Chi substrates displayed a sustained release of selenium for 21 days. The antibacterial properties of the prepared substrates were evaluated with Escherichia coli (E. coli). The result showed that TiO(2) nanotubes-Se-Chi substrates had long term antibacterial capacity. The approach in this study provides an alternative to fabricate anticancer and antibacterial titanium-based implants for potential clinical application.

In consideration of personal wealth and public security, time is one of the most significant factors influencing the real-time web service, such as E-Commerce, aviation, military affairs, etc. However, there is no suitable timed model for OWL-S to support modeling the real-time web service in semantic web. In this paper, web service is defined in OWL-S, the standard ontology language of semantic web. Then, in order to formal analyses the time property of web services, Timed CSP which is an extension of Hoare's CSP is utilized to model OWL-S in detail. Finally, Our future working plan is also given in this paper.
