The discovery of a method to separate isotopologues, molecular entities that differ in only isotopic composition

Nowadays, the importance of molecular crystals and solids with regular structures is increasing in both basic chemistry and applied fields. However, theoretical studies of those systems based on electronic structure theories have been limited. Although density functional theory (DFT) calculations using generalized gradient approximation type functional under periodic boundary condition is effective for such theoretical studies, we need some improvements for calculating the dispersion interaction and the excited state of crystals. Accordingly, in this chapter, two methods for calculating the electronic structures of molecular crystals are discussed: cluster-model/periodic-model (CM/PM)-combined method and quantum mechanics/periodic-molecular mechanics (QM/periodic-MM) method. In the CM/PM-combined method, an infinite crystal system is calculated by the DFT method under periodic boundary condition, and important moieties, which are represented by CMs, are calculated by either DFT method with hybrid-type functionals or wave function theories such as the Møller–Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2), spin-component-scaled-MP2, and coupled-cluster singles and doubles theory with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)). This method is useful for gas adsorption into crystals such as metal–organic frameworks. In the QM/periodic-MM method, an important moiety is calculated using a QM method such as the DFT method with hybrid-type functionals and wave function theories, where the effects of the crystal are incorporated into the QM calculation via the periodic MM method using a classical force field. This method is useful for theoretical studies of excited states and chemical reactions. The applications of these methods in the following processes are described in this chapter: adsorption of gas molecules on metal–organic frameworks, chemical reactions in crystals, and luminescence of the crystals of transition metal complexes. To the best of our knowledge, the theoretical calculations conducted in this chapter show one of the successful approaches of electronic structure theories to molecular crystals, because of the reasonable and practical approximations.

Targeting tumor hydrogen peroxide (H

Exploring new porous coordination polymers (PCPs) that have tunable structure and conductivity is attractive but remains challenging. Herein, fine pore structure engineering by ligand conformation control of naphthalene diimide (NDI)-based semiconducting PCPs with π stacking-dependent conductivity tunability is achieved. The π stacking distances and ligand conformation in these isoreticular PCPs were modulated by employing metal centers with different coordination geometries. As a result, three conjugated PCPs (Co-pyNDI, Ni-pyNDI, and Zn-pyNDI) with varying pore structure and conductivity were obtained. Their crystal structures were determined by three-dimensional electron diffraction. The through-space charge transfer and tunable pore structure in these PCPs result in modulated selectivity and sensitivity in gas sensing. Zn-pyNDI can serve as a room-temperature operable chemiresistive sensor selective to acetone.

Controlling gas sorption by simple pore modification is important in molecular recognition and industrial separation processes. In particular, it is challenging to realize the inverse selectivity, which reduces the adsorption of a high-affinity gas and increases the adsorption of a low-affinity gas. Herein, an "opposite action" strategy is demonstrated for boosting CO2 /C2 H2 selectivity in porous coordination polymers (PCPs). A precise steric design of channel pores using an amino group as an additional interacting site enabled the synergetic increase in CO2 adsorption while suppressing the C2 H2 adsorption. Based on this strategy, two new ultramicroporous PCP physisorbents that are isostructural were synthesised. They exhibited the highest CO2 uptake and CO2 /C2 H2 volume uptake ratio at 298 K. Origin of this specific selectivity was verified by detailed density functional theory calculations. The breakthrough separation performances with remarkable stability and recyclability of both the PCPs render them relevant materials for C2 H2 purification from CO2 /C2 H2 mixtures.

In this paper, a dual-ligand design strategy is demonstrated to modulate the performance of the electronically conductive metalorganic frameworks (EC-MOFs) thin film with a spray layer-by-layer assembly method. The thin film not only can be precisely prepared in nanometer scale (20–70 nm), but also shows the pin-hole-free smooth surface. The high quality nano-film of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene (HITP) doped Cu-HHTP enables the precise modulation of the chemiresistive sensitivity and selectivity. Selectivity improvement over 220% were realized for benzene vs. NH3, as well as enhanced response and recovery properties. In addition, the selectivity of the EC-MOF thin film sensors toward other gases (e.g. triethylamine, methane, ethylbenzene, hydrogen, butanone, and acetone) vs. NH3 at room temperature is also discussed.

To achieve unique molecular‐recognition patterns, a rational control of the flexibility of porous coordination polymers (PCPs) is highly sought, but it remains elusive. From a thermodynamic perspective, the competitive relationship between the structural deformation energy (Edef) of soft PCPs and the guest interaction is key for selective a guest‐triggered structural‐transformation behavior. Therefore, it is vital to investigate and control Edef to regulate this competition for flexibility control. Driven by these theoretical insights, we demonstrate an Edef‐modulation strategy via encoding inter‐framework hydrogen bonds into a soft PCP with an interpenetrated structure. As a proof of this concept, the enhanced Edef of PCP enables a selective gate‐opening behavior toward CHCl₃ over CH₂Cl₂ by changing the adsorption‐energy landscape of the compounds. We present a facile route towards a dual single-atom nanozyme composed of Zn and Mo, which utilizes the non-covalent nano-assembly of polyoxometalates, supramolecular coordination complexes as the metal-atom precursor, and a macroscopic amphiphilic aerogel as the supporting substrate. The dual single-atoms of Zn and Mo have a high content (1.5 and 7.3 wt%, respectively) and exhibit a synergistic effect and a peroxidase-like activity. Adsorption-based xylene isomer separation is more energy efficient than conventional processes. Herein, three isostructural Hofmann-type porous coordination polymers (PCPs), {M(Pz)[Ni(CN)4]n} (M = Fe, FePzNi, Co, CoPzNi, and Ni, NiPzNi; Pz = pyrazine) were synthesized and shown to exhibit coordination-dependent lability for the selectivity toward p-xylene over m- and o-xylene.

The present study introduces the mechanisms for the oriented external electric field (OEEF)-participating cycloadditions of nanographene and the analogous hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoflakes. Despite the C-C and B-N pairs being isoelectronic, their different ionicities give rise to their distinct response to applied electric fields. For the nanographene models, the Diels-Alder addition obeyed the reaction axis rule and the activation barrier changed under an OEEF perpendicular to the carbon skeleton for enhanced/reduced intermolecular charge transfer, which provides a feasible strategy for the side-selective derivatization of graphene to obtain one-face-only adducts and Janus bifunctional products. By contrast, for the h-BN models, the variation of the activation barrier was pronounced when the electric field was aligned along the in-plane N-B bond rather than the well-accepted reaction axis. Electronic structure analyses indicated that, because of the opposite electron withdrawing/donating nature of the reacting sites of B/N, an OEEF along the N-B bond was capable of further enhancing the polarization via in-plane intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in a stabilized transition state and notable barrier reduction.

Single-ligand-based electronically conductive porous coordination polymers/metal-organic frameworks (EC-PCPs/MOFs) fail to meet the requirements of numerous electronic applications owing to their limited tunability in terms of both conductivity and topology. In this study, a new 2D π-conjugated EC-MOF containing copper units with mixed trigonal ligands was developed: Cu3 (HHTP)(THQ) (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydrotriphenylene, THQ=tetrahydroxy-1,4-quinone). The modulated conductivity (σ≈2.53×10-5 S cm-1 with an activation energy of 0.30 eV) and high porosity (ca. 441.2 m2 g-1 ) of the Cu3 (HHTP)(THQ) semiconductive nanowires provided an appropriate resistance baseline and highly accessible areas for the development of an excellent chemiresistive gas sensor.

Background Antibiotic resistance has become a global threat for human health, calling for rational use of antibiotics. Aim To analyze the distribution and drug resistance of the bacteria, providing the prerequisite for use of antibiotics in emergency patients. Methods A total of 2048 emergency patients from 2013 to 2017 were enrolled. Their clinical examination specimens were collected, followed by isolation of bacteria. The bacterial identification and drug susceptibility testing were carried out. Results A total of 3387 pathogens were isolated. The top six pathogens were Acinetobacter baumannii (660 strains), Staphylococcus aureus (436 strains), Klebsiella pneumoniae (347 strains), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (338 strains), Escherichia coli (237 strains), and Candida albicans (207 strains). The isolation rates of these pathogens decreased year by year except Klebsiella pneumoniae, which increased from 7.1% to 12.1%. Acinetobacter baumannii is a widely-resistant strain, with multiple resistances to imipenem, ciprofloxacin, minocycline and tigecycline. The Staphylococcus aureus had high resistance rates to levofloxacin, penicillin G, and tetracycline. But the susceptibility of it to vancomycin and tigecycline were 100%. Klebsiella pneumoniae had high resistance rates to imipenem, cefoperazone/sulbactam, amikacin, and ciprofloxacin, with the lowest resistance rate to tigecycline. The resistance rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to cefoperazone/sulbactam and imipenem were higher, with the resistance rate to amikacin below 10%. Besides, Escherichia coli had high resistance rates to ciprofloxacin and cefoperazone/sulbactam and low resistance rates to imipenem, amikacin, and tigecycline. Conclusion The pathogenic bacteria isolated from the emergency patients were mainly Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. The detection rates of drug-resistant bacteria were high, with different bacteria having multiple drug resistances to commonly used antimicrobial agents, guiding the rational use of drugs and reducing the production of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Due to the extremely high number of accessible active sites and short diffusion path, porous coordination polymer (PCP) nanosheets have demonstrated a variety of promising applications, especially for energy conversion and mass transfer. Objective: To explore the effects of Bailing capsule combined with irbesartan on oxidative stress, inflammatory response and immune function in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Methods: 142 patients with diabetic nephropathy admitted to our hospital from April 2017 to July 2018 were selected as the study subjects. 71 cases in the control group and 71 cases in the observation group were randomly assigned. The renal function, oxidative stress, inflammation and immune indexes of two groups of patients with diabetic nephropathy were compared and analyzed. Results: After treatment, the levels of BUN, SCr, UARE, ROS, AOPPS, TNF-α, CRP and CD8+ of DN patients in both groups decreased significantly compared withthose before the treatment, while the levels of SOD, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ increased significantly compared with those before the treatment; and the levels of BUN, SCr, UARE, ROS, AOPPS, TNF-α, CRP and CD8+ in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group, while the levels of SOD, CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Conclusions: Bailing capsule combined with irbesartan in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy can effectively improve the renal function, oxidize inflammatory reaction and enhance the immune function of patients, which has clinical significance.

The unique Rh-Al bond in recently synthesized Rh(PAlP) 1 {PAlP = pincer-type diphosphino-aluminyl ligand Al[NCH2(P iPr2)]2(C6H4)2NMe} was investigated using the DFT method. Complex 1 has four doubly occupied nonbonding d orbitals on the Rh atom and one Rh d orbital largely participating in the Rh-Al bond which exhibits considerably large bonding overlap between Rh and Al atoms like in a covalent bond. Interestingly, Rhδ--Alδ+ polarization is observed in the bonding MO of 1, which is reverse to Rhδ+-Eδ- (E = coordinating atom) polarization found in a usual coordinate bond. This unusual polarization arises from the presence of the Al valence orbital at significantly higher energy than the Rh valence orbital energy. Characteristic features of 1 are further unveiled by comparing 1 with similar Rh complexes RhL(PMe3)2 (2 for L = AlMe2, 3 for L = Al(NMe2)2, 4 for L = BMe2, 5 for L = SiMe3, 6 for L = SiH3, 7 for L = CH3, 8 for L = OMe, and 9 for L = Cl). As expected, 7, 8, and 9 exhibit usual Rhδ+-Eδ- polarization (E = coordinating atom) in the Rh-E bonding MO. On the other hand, the reverse Rhδ--Eδ+ polarization is observed in the Rh-E bonding MOs of 2-5 like in 1, while the Rh-Si bond is polarized little in 6. These results are clearly understood in terms of the valence orbital energy of the ligand. Because the LUMO of 1 mainly consists of the Rh 4dσ, 5s, and 5p orbitals and the Al 3s and 3p orbitals, both Rh and Al atoms play the role of coordinating site for a substrate bearing a lone pair orbital. For instance, NH3 and pyridine coordinate to both Al and Rh atoms with considerably large binding energy. PAlP exhibits significantly strong trans influence, which is as strong as that of SiMe3 but moderately weaker than that of BMe2. The trans influence of these ligands is mainly determined by the valence orbital energy of the ligand and the covalent bond radius of the coordinating E atom.

The activity of nanomaterials (NMs) in catalytically scavenging superoxide anions mimics that of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Although dozens of NMs have been demonstrated to possess such activity, the underlying principles are unclear, hindering the discovery of NMs as the novel SOD mimics. In this work, we use density functional theory calculations to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of the catalytic processes, and we develop two principles, namely, an energy level principle and an adsorption energy principle, for the activity. The first principle quantitatively describes the role of the intermediate frontier molecular orbital in transferring electrons for catalysis. The second one quantitatively describes the competition between the desired catalytic reaction and undesired side reactions. The ability of the principles to predict the SOD-like activities of metal-organic frameworks were verified by experiments. Both principles can be easily implemented in computer programs to computationally screen NMs with the intrinsic SOD-like activity., A general predicting theory for superoxide-dismutase mimicking nanomaterials is currently lacking. The present manuscript reports a density functional theory study on the superoxides dismutase-like activity of nanomaterials based on their electronic band structures and surface adsorption energies.

The safe storage of flammable gases, such as acetylene, is essential for current industrial purposes. However, the narrow pressure (P) and temperature range required for the industrial use of pure acetylene (100 P 200 kPa at 298 K) and its explosive behaviour at higher pressures make its storage and release challenging. Flexible metal-organic frameworks that exhibit a gated adsorption/desorption behaviour-in which guest uptake and release occur above threshold pressures, usually accompanied by framework deformations-have shown promise as storage adsorbents. Herein, the pressures for gas uptake and release of a series of zinc-based mixed-ligand catenated metal-organic frameworks were controlled by decorating its ligands with two different functional groups and changing their ratio. This affects the deformation energy of the framework, which in turn controls the gated behaviour. The materials offer good performances for acetylene storage with a usable capacity of ~90 v/v (77% of the overall amount) at 298 K and under a practical pressure range (100-150 kPa).

Objectives Down syndrome critical region 1 (DSCR1) is associated with carcinogenesis and tumor growth in several types of malignancy. However, little is known about the role of DSCR1 in CRC progression. The present study aimed to elucidate the clinicopathological significance, prognostic, and function roles of DSCR1 in CRC. Methods Firstly, we analyzed DSCR1 expression in 58 paired CRC samples and Oncomine database. Then, we analyzed DSCR1 expression in two independent CRC cohorts (test cohort: n = 70; validation cohort: n = 58) and tested its overall survival (OS) by Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Finally, we overexpressed DSCR1 in two CRC cell lines DLD1 and LoVo and analyzed its effect on cell cycle and senescence. Results DSCR1 expression was significantly decreased in CRC samples and associated with clinicopathologic features of CRC patients, such as tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and TNM stage. CRC patients with low expression of DSCR1 had shorter overall survival (OS). Kaplan-Meier survival analyses showed that the expression of DSCR1 was significant factor for OS in both cohorts. Multiple Cox regression analysis showed that DSCR1 expression was an independent prognostic marker for OS in test cohort. Overexpression of DSCR1 isoform 4 (DSCR1-4) increased p21, p16, p-NFAT1, and p-NFAT2, while decreased CDK2, CDK4, and Cyclin D1 in CRC cells. In addition, overexpression of DSCR1-4 prevented proliferation and colony formation, and induced senescence in vitro. Moreover, overexpression of DSCR1-4 inhibited tumor growth and tumor angiogenesis in vivo. Conclusions Our study found high expression of DSCR1 contributes to favorable prognosis of CRC patients and prevents cell cycle and proliferation of CRC cells, indicating a critical tumor suppressive role in CRC progression.

Flexibility in gas absorption Soft materials such as porous coordination polymer (PCP) can exhibit temperature-dependent flexible motions of their internal pores that can assist in gas separation and storage. Gu et al. designed a copper-based PCP with a ligand that contains phenothiazine-5,5-dioxide. The entrances to the porous cages changed size with temperature, when these functional groups underwent flipping motions. The change in gate size could lead to high selectivity for gas absorption and enabled the separation of oxygen from argon and of ethylene from ethane as well as long-term gas storage under ambient conditions. A novel squaramide-containing metal-organic framework (MOF) material has been designed and synthesized. A detailed X-ray crystal structure analysis showed that four squaramides of this MOF adopted two orientations in each dependent nanopore, confirming that two carbonyl and two N-H groups pointed simultaneously to the inside of the one-dimensional nanometer channel. The MOF was applied as an efficient bifunctional hydrogen-bonding catalyst for Michael additions of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds to nitroalkenes in pure water, boosting the catalytic efficiency by up to approximately five times the value afforded by the homogeneous control and exhibiting a highly size-selective catalytic performance and good renewability. The catalytic mechanism was also discussed in detail. The present study provides a highly promising approach to achieving dual-activation catalytic centers in a single system, which function as microscopic chemical reactors that allow the interaction and fast transport of substrate molecules in their cavities.

Two porous coordination polymers (PCPs) with different topologies (NTU‐19: sql and NTU‐20: dia) underwent finely controlled, stepwise crystal conversions to yield a common water‐stable, flexible 2D framework (NTU‐22: kgm). The crystal conversions occurred directly at higher temperature via the 3D intermediate (NTU‐21: nbo), which could be observed at lower temperature. The successful isolation of the intermediate product of NTU‐21, characterization with in situ PXRD and UV/Vis spectra were combined with DFT calculations to allow an understanding of the dynamic processes at the atomic level. Remarkably, breakthrough experiments demonstrate NTU‐22 with integral structural properties allowed significant CO2/CH4 mixture separation.

Recent reports pointed out that the formal La2C2n (2n = 92-106) series can exist stably as carbide cluster metallofullerenes (CCMFs) La2C2@C2n-2 with their successful crystallographic characterization. Herein, we suggest that the corresponding dimetallofullerenes (di-EMFs) La2@C2n possessing the lowest potential energies are also plausible candidates because of their favorability in statistical thermodynamics. This can be demonstrated in our present theoretical investigations on La2C94 and previously reported other La2C2n (2n = 92, 96-100) series by density functional theory calculations and statistical mechanics analyses. Nevertheless, it was noted that these thermodynamically favorable La2@C2n isomers turned out to be kinetically unstable radicals due to the presence of one unpaired electron on the carbon cage, making them missing fullerenes and difficult to be captured in their pristine forms, except for the experimentally obtained La2@D5(450)-C100 that has no unpaired electron. Such kinetic instability could be modified by electron reduction (the products were denoted as [La2@C2n]-) or other similar exterior functionalization with ˙CF3 and benzyl radicals, resulting in La-La bonded and paramagnetic species capable of being captured. On the basis of these approaches, carbon cages D3(85)-C92, Cs(120)-C94, D2(186)-C96, and C2(157)-C96 are predicted to be feasibly captured as both pristine CCMF species and electron reduced di-EMF derivatives.

Here we report a soft porous crystal possessing hemilabile cross-links in its framework that exhibits exclusive gate opening for ethylene, enabling the discriminatory adsorption of ethylene over ethane. A Co-based porous coordination polymer (PCP) bearing vinylogous tetrathiafulvalene (VTTF) ligands, [Co(VTTF)], forms Co-S bonds as intermolecular cross-links in its framework in the evacuated closed state. The PCP recognizes ethylene via d-π complexation on the accessible metal site that displaces and cleaves the Co-S bond to "unlock" the closed structure. This ethylene-triggered unlocking event facilitates remarkable nonporous-to-porous transformations that open up accessible void space. This structural transformation follows a two-step gate-opening process. Each phase, including the intermediate structure, was successfully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which revealed an intriguing "half-open" structure suggestive of a disproportionate gate-opening phenomenon. The gate-opening mechanism was also investigated theoretically; density functional theory and Monte Carlo calculations revealed that the unique "half-open" phase corresponds to a substantially stable intermediate over the possible transformation trajectories. While ethylene opens the gate, ethane does not because it is unable to coordinate to the Co center. This feature is maintained even at pressures above 1 MPa and at a temperature of 303 K, demonstrating the potential of the "gate-locking/unlocking" mechanism that exploits the hemilabile cross-linking in soft porous crystals.
