Abstract Background Traditional chemotherapeutic agents suffer from a lack of selectivity, poor targeting ability, and drug resistance. Developing tumor-specific therapies is crucial for precisely eliminating tumors while circumventing toxicity to normal tissues. Disulfiram (DSF), an FDA-approved drug for treating alcohol dependence, exhibits antitumor effect by forming complexes with copper ions (Cu(DDC)2). Here, we developed a Cu-doped polydopamine-based nanosystem (DSF@CuPDA-PEGM) to achieve in situ generation of toxic Cu(DDC)2. Results In cancer cells with elevated H2O2 contents, CuPDA responsively degrades to release Cu ions and DSF, allowing on-site synthesis of Cu(DDC)2 with potent antitumor activity. DSF@CuPDA-PEGM exhibits excellent therapeutic efficacy against both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cells while minimizing toxicity to noncancerous cells. Moreover, DSF@CuPDA-PEGM promotes the immune response by inducing cancer cell immunogenic death, thereby augmenting anti-PD-1-based immune checkpoint blockade therapy. Conclusion A tumor-specifically degradable Cu-doped polydopamine-based nanosystem is developed to achieve in situ synthesis of antitumor compounds, providing a promising approach to precisely eliminate tumors and heighten chemo-immunotherapy. Abstract Wearable visual bionic devices, fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence, are making remarkable progress. However, traditional silicon vision chips often grapple with high energy losses and challenges in emulating complex biological behaviors. In this study, we constructed a van der Waals P3HT/GaAs nanowires P-N junction by carefully directing the arrangement of organic molecules. Combined with a Schottky junction, this facilitated multi-faceted birdlike visual enhancement, including broadband non-volatile storage, low-light perception, and a near-zero power consumption operating mode in both individual devices and 5 × 5 arrays on arbitrary substrates. Specifically, we realized over 5 bits of in-memory sensing and computing with both negative and positive photoconductivity. When paired with two imaging modes (visible and UV), our reservoir computing system demonstrated up to 94% accuracy for color recognition. It achieved motion and UV grayscale information extraction (displayed with sunscreen), leading to fusion visual imaging. This work provides a promising co-design of material and device for a broadband and highly biomimetic optoelectronic neuromorphic system.

Pristine SiC coating prepared by plasma spraying is difficult to achieve good ablation resistance at high temperature due to its weak SiO2 scale. Besides incorporation by ultra-high temperature ceramics, the modification of the SiC coating from its feedstock powder is necessary. In the current work, the mixed powders of SiC, Si and C, where the SiC was encapsulated and then carbonized by polydopamine, denoted as SiC@C–Si, were employed as the feedstocks, compared with the mixed case, i.e. SiC–Si–C. The SiC@C–Si coating exhibited superior anti-ablation properties, with a linear ablation rate of 0.62 μm/s, 57 % lower than the SiC–Si–C coating. This is attributed to the fact that nano-carbon formed by carbonization of polydopamine is more prone to reacting with Si than micron-sized C powder, thereby forming a dense microstructure after ablation. Besides, in-situ formed SiC by the depletion reaction increases the flow resistance and decelerates the failure of SiO2 film, thus improving the ablation resistance.

Precise classification of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud is a fundamental process in various applications, such as land cover mapping, forestry management, and autonomous driving. Due to the lack of spectral information, the existing research on single wavelength LiDAR classification is limited. Spectral information from images could address this limitation, but data fusion suffers from varying illumination conditions and the registration problem. A novel multispectral LiDAR successfully obtains spatial and spectral information as a brand-new data type, namely, multispectral point cloud, thereby improving classification performance. However, spatial and spectral information of multispectral LiDAR has been processed separately in previous studies, thereby possibly limiting the classification performance of multispectral LiDAR. To explore the potential of this new data type, the current spatial–spectral classification framework for multispectral LiDAR that includes four steps: (1) neighborhood selection, (2) feature extraction and selection, (3) classification, and (4) label smoothing. Three novel highlights were proposed in this spatial – spectral classification framework. (1) We improved the popular eigen entropy-based neighborhood selection by spectral angle match to extract a more precise neighborhood. (2) We evaluated the importance of geometric and spectral features to compare their contributions and selected the most important features to reduce feature redundancy. (3) We conducted spatial label smoothing by a conditional random field, accounting for the spatial and spectral information of the neighborhood points. The proposed method demonstrated by a multispectral LiDAR with three channels: 466 nm (blue), 527 nm (green), and 628 nm (red). Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed spatial – spectral classification framework. Moreover, this research takes advantages of the complementation of spatial and spectral information, which could benefit more precise neighborhood selection, more effective features, and satisfactory refinement of classification result. Finally, this study could serve as an inspiration for future efficient spatial–spectral process for multispectral point cloud.

To efficiently decrease ablation heat accumulation and improve the ability of ZrC–SiC/TaC coatings to protect carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, a thermally conductive nanonetwork with a ceramic@carbon core–shell structure was designed and constructed. Polymer-derived SiC/TaC with a graphene carbon shell was synthesized and introduced into a ZrC coating by supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying (SAPS). Graphene shell paths increased the heat transfer capability by lowering the surface temperature to approximately 200 °C during oxyacetylene ablation. The heat dissipation of the graphene shell in the ZrC–SiC/TaC@C coating reduced the volatilization of low-melting-point phases and delayed the sintering of ZrO2 particles. Thus, the graphene shell in ZrC–SiC/TaC@C coating decreased the mass and linear ablation rates by 91.4% and 93.7% compared to ZrC–SiC/TaC coating, respectively. This work provided a constructive idea for improving the ablation resistance of the coatings by incorporating carbon nanomaterials as a function of heat dissipation.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus, a significant global public health challenge, severely impacts human health worldwide. The organoid, an innovative in vitro three-dimensional (3D) culture model, closely mimics tissues or organs in vivo. Insulin-secreting islet organoid, derived from stem cells induced in vitro with 3D structures, has emerged as a potential alternative for islet transplantation and as a possible disease model that mirrors the human body’s in vivo environment, eliminating species difference. This technology has gained considerable attention for its potential in diabetes treatment. Despite advances, the process of stem cell differentiation into islet organoid and its cultivation demonstrates deficiencies, prompting ongoing efforts to develop more efficient differentiation protocols and 3D biomimetic materials. At present, the constructed islet organoid exhibit limitations in their composition, structure, and functionality when compared to natural islets. Consequently, further research is imperative to achieve a multi-tissue system composition and improved insulin secretion functionality in islet organoid, while addressing transplantation-related safety concerns, such as tumorigenicity, immune rejection, infection, and thrombosis. This review delves into the methodologies and strategies for constructing the islet organoid, its application in diabetes treatment, and the pivotal scientific challenges within organoid research, offering fresh perspectives for a deeper understanding of diabetes pathogenesis and the development of therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Chemoresistance remains a significant challenge for effective breast cancer treatment which leads to cancer recurrence. CRISPR-directed gene editing becomes a powerful tool to reduce chemoresistance by reprogramming the tumor microenvironment. Previous research has revealed that Chinese herbal extracts have significant potential to overcome tumor chemoresistance. However, the therapeutic efficacy is often limited due to their poor tumor targeting and in vivo durability. Here we have developed a tumor microenvironment responsive nanoplatform (H-MnO2(ISL + DOX)-PTPN2@HA, M(I + D)PH) for nano-herb and CRISPR codelivery to reduce chemoresistance. Synergistic tumor inhibitory effects were achieved by the treatment of isoliquiritigenin (ISL) with doxorubicin (DOX), which were enhanced by CRISPR-based gene editing to target protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (PTPN2) to initiate long-term immunotherapy. Efficient PTPN2 depletion was observed after treatment with M(I + D)PH nanoparticles, which resulted in the recruitment of intratumoral infiltrating lymphocytes and an increase of proinflammatory cytokines in the tumor tissue. Overall, our nanoparticle platform provides a diverse technique for accomplishing synergistic chemotherapy and immunotherapy, which offers an effective treatment alternative for malignant neoplasms. Abstract Forests have seen a strong greening trend worldwide, and previous studies have attributed this mainly to land‐use conversions such as afforestation. However, for the greening of existing forests, the role of human interventions is unclear. Here we paired neighboring natural and planted forests in Southern China to minimize the differences between the forest types and analyzed the vegetation index EVI2 from Landsat over 1987 to 2021. The EVI2 trends observed in natural forests can be seen as mainly responses to large‐scale environmental changes, whereas the difference between the forest types represents the impact caused by human interventions. We found that though the mean EVI2 of planted forests was comparable to that of natural forests, the greening trends were overall 7.0% lower in planted forests. Our results suggest that human interventions associated with planted forests did not accelerate their greening, indicating the necessity for refined policies to enhance future forest greening.

Background: Gerberae Piloselloidis Herba (GPH) exhibits notable efficacy in alleviating allergic asthma. Previous studies in our research have identified a mixture of luteolin, arbutin, and marmesin as effective components of GPH in treating allergic asthma. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanism of these active components. Method: Using an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma mouse model, various treatment groups were administered, including GPH, the active component mixture (termed ''Mixture'') containing luteolin, arbutin, and marmesin, and a positive drug (dexamethasone, DEX). Relevant indices were assessed, including behavioral characteristics, inflammatory cell counts, cytokine levels, histopathological examination of lung tissue, apoptosis, and expression of key proteins such as Caspase-3, Bax, Bcl-2, PI3K, p-PI3K, Akt, and p-Akt. The effect of the Mixture on the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway was further verified using the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Results: The Mixture significantly alleviated asthma symptoms, decreased IgE levels, cytokine levels (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and TNF-α), and the number of inflammatory cells in serum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), leading to the alleviation of lung pathological lesions. Additionally, the Mixture reduced the expression of Bax and Caspase-3 while increasing Bcl-2 expression, resulting in mitigated apoptosis in lung tissue. Furthermore, there appeared a decrease in the levels of PI3K and p-PI3K, as well as the ratio of p-Akt to Akt in the Mixture group, indicating the suppression of PI3K and Akt phosphorylation. Interestingly, the effects of the Mixture were comparable to those of GPH, LY294002, or the combination of LY294002 with the Mixture. Conclusion: The study confirms that the Mixture containing luteolin, arbutin, and marmesin indeed alleviates allergic asthma induced by OVA in mice by suppressing the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. These findings highlight the potential of the GPH-derived Mixture as a novel therapeutic for the treatment of allergic asthma.

Composition design of high-entropy carbides is a topic of great scientific interest for the hot-end parts in the aerospace field. A novel theoretical method through an inverse composition design route, i.e. initially ensuring the oxide scale with excellent anti-ablation stability, is proposed to improve the ablation resistance of the high-entropy carbide coatings. In this work, the (Hf0.36Zr0.24Ti0.1Sc0.1Y0.1La0.1)C1-δ (HEC) coatings were prepared by the inverse design concept and verified by the ablation resistance experiment. The linear ablation rate of the HEC coatings is −1.45 ​μm/s, only 4.78 % of the pristine HfC coatings after the oxyacetylene ablation at 4.18 ​MW/m2. The HEC possesses higher toughness with a higher Pugh's ratio of 1.55 in comparison with HfC (1.30). The in-situ formed dense (Hf0.36Zr0.24Ti0.1Sc0.1Y0.1La0.1)O2-δ oxide scale during ablation benefits to improve the anti-ablation performance attributed to its high structural adaptability with a lattice constant change not exceeding 0.19 % at 2000–2300 ​°C. The current investigation demonstrates the effectiveness of the inverse theoretical design, providing a novel optimization approach for ablation protection of high-entropy carbide coatings.

Abstract BackgroundWith the rise in people’s living standards and aging populations, a heightened emphasis has been placed in the field of medical and health care. In recent years, there has been a drastic increase in nutrition management in domestic research circles. The mobile nutritional health management platform based on WeChat miniprograms has been widely used to promote health and self-management and to monitor individual nutritional health status in China. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of comprehensive scientific evaluation regarding the functionality and quality of the diverse range of nutritional miniprograms that have surfaced in the market. ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the functionality and quality of China’s WeChat nutrition management miniprogram by using the User Version of the Mobile Application Rating Scale (uMARS). MethodsThis observational study involves quantitative methods. A keyword search for “nutrition,” “diet,” “food,” and “meal” in Chinese or English was conducted on WeChat, and all miniprograms pertaining to these keywords were thoroughly analyzed. Then, basic information including name, registration date, update date, service type, user scores, and functional scores was extracted from January 2017 to November 2023. Rating scores were provided by users based on their experience and satisfaction with the use of the WeChat miniprogram, and functional scores were integrated and summarized for the primary functions of each miniprogram. Moreover, the quality of nutrition management applets was evaluated by 3 researchers independently using the uMARS. ResultsInitially, 27 of 891 miniprograms identified were relevant to nutrition management. Among them, 85.2% (23/27) of them offered features for diet management, facilitating recording of daily dietary intake to evaluate nutritional status; 70.4% (19/27) provided resources for nutrition education and classroom instruction; 59.3% (16/27) included functionalities for exercise management, allowing users to record daily physical activity; and only 44.4% (12/27) featured components for weight management. The total quality score on the uMARS ranged 2.85-3.88 (median 3.38, IQR 3.14-3.57). Engagement scores on the uMARS varied from 2.00 to 4.33 (median 3.00, IQR 2.67-3.67). Functional dimension scores ranged from 3.00 to 4.00 (median 3.33, IQR 3.33-3.67), with a lower score of 2.67 and a higher score of 4.33 outside the reference range. Aesthetic dimension scores ranged from 2.33 to 4.67 (median 3.67, IQR 3.33-4.00). Informational dimension scores ranged from 2.33 to 4.67 (median 3.33, IQR 2.67-3.67). ConclusionsOur findings from the uMARS highlight a predominant emphasis on health aspects over nutritional specifications in the app supporting WeChat miniprograms related to nutrition management. The quality of these miniprograms is currently at an average level, with considerable room for functional improvements in the future.

We deployed 8 surface drifters in the western North Pacific in 2022. By integrating the Global Drifter Program’s data, we analyzed the drifter-based sea surface currents and temperatures during tropical cyclones. The maximum in-situ surface current observed was 0.70 m/s during typhoon Hinnamnor. Our surface drifters provided similar observations as compared to an adjacent Global Drifter Program’s drifter. Furthermore, we investigated float profiling observations during tropical cyclones. Based on Argo float 2903647, the SST decreased by 1.4oC after the passage of typhoon Hinnamnor. This study demonstrates the reliability of our newly deployed surface drifters and exhibits the state-of-the-art capability for in-situ observations of tropical cyclone-ocean interaction.

Background Hyperphosphatemia occurs universally in end-stage renal disease(ESRD), and the attainment of target serum phosphate levels remains suboptimal with currently available phosphate binders. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tenapanor in end-stage renal disease patients with hyperphosphatemia.Methods Data sources included PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. This meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials evaluating both the efficacy of tenapanor in reducing serum phosphate levels and its safety profile. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for RCTs. The GRADE system was used to assess the overall certainty of evidence. A meta-analysis was carried out by using fixed effects (I2 values < 50%) or random effects (I2 values ≥ 50%) models to calculate MD with 95% CI for continuous outcome variables and RR with 95% CI for dichotomous variables. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots.Results A total of seven RCTs involving 877 individuals were included. Curative resection stands as the sole potential cure for gallbladder cancer (GBC); nevertheless, a dearth of knowledge persists regarding long-term follow-up data and prognostic factors that hinder achieving a cure post-surgery. A retrospective cohort study was conducted by analyzing pathologically confirmed initial resections for GBC between 2000 and 2013 across three Chinese medical centers. The concept of observed cure refers to a 10-year survival period devoid of any disease recurrence. Employing a semiparametric proportional hazards mixture cure model enabled the identification of clinicopathological factors impeding a cure for GBC post-surgery. In our current study, a total of 331 patients were included, with a follow-up period exceeding a decade. The median overall survival (OS) was recorded at 31.6 months, with 39 patients (11.78%) achieving a 10-year OS, classified as 10-year survivors. Within this subset, 36 patients reached a 10-year relapse-free survival, denoting cure, and yielding an observed cure rate of 10.88%. Notably, factors such as combined surgical resection involving invaded organs, positive lymph node metastasis, and R1 resection (below 1%) were identified as virtually precluding a cure. Additionally, patients with T3–4 stage, hepatic invasion, advanced AJCC stage or poor tumor differentiation exhibited a low likelihood of achieving cure (below 5%). The discovery of these prognostic factors holds significant value in tailoring individualized treatment strategies and enhancing clinical decision-making processes.

Abstract Plants of the Tamarix L. genus (Tamaricaceae) mainly occur in arid inlands of Asia, but a few species occur in the coastal areas of China, and the Yellow River may account for this. This study was conducted to elucidate whether and how the Yellow River affects the pattern and development of the Tamarix genus, involving two critical species of Tamarix austromongolica Nakai and Tamarix chinensis Lour. With geographical distribution data, relationships of T. austromongolica with the Yellow River and the pertaining watershed were examined using the method of random permutation. BackgroundStroke is the leading cause of acquired disability and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Its rate of incidence, disability, mortality, and recurrence is high, and the patients experience various symptoms of discomfort, which not only affect their rehabilitation function but also reduce their ability to perform daily activities and their quality of life. Nowadays, with the improvement of China’s medical standards, patients are increasingly attentive to their quality of life and health status. However, diagnostic techniques and effective treatments for patients with stroke are still limited but urgently required. ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the quality of life during hospitalization using a stroke patient-reported outcomes (PROs) scale and additionally to recognize potential factors and risk indicators that may impact recurrent events, facilitating early intervention measures. MethodsThis is a registry-based, retrospective observational cross-sectional study on patients with stroke. A convenient sampling method was used to select various indicators of patients. The Stroke-PRO scale was then used to assess patients’ conditions across physical, psychological, social, and therapeutic domains. Multiple linear regression analysis was applied to identify factors influencing stroke PROs, while correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between these outcomes and blood lipid levels. This study investigated the potential of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a potent bioactive compound and inhibitory neurotransmitter, in mitigating chronic ammonia stress-induced liver toxicity in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). GABA is known for its role in alleviating stress responses and enhancing antioxidant defense. In this study, experimental fishes (weighing 20.51 ± 0.39 g) underwent 56 days of chronic ammonia stress (10 ± 0.053 mg/L), with or without supplemented with GABA (100 mg/kg) in the diet. Serum ammonia (152.14 ± 2.94, CK-95.82 ± 0.81 μmol/L), serum MDA content (3.41 ± 1.24, CK-1.25 ± 0.08 μmol/L), and liver MDA content (1.98 ± 1.72, CK-0.84 ± 0.02 μmol/g prot) were significantly increased in the ammonia exposure group compared with the CK group. GABA supplementation effectively alleviates the detrimental effects of chronic ammonia stress, specifically on growth parameters, serum ammonia levels, and malondialdehyde content. GABA supplementation elevated the expressions of antioxidant genes (zu/cu sod, cat), promoted the expressions of nrf2, and reduced the expression of keap1. Moreover, GABA significantly alleviated liver injury and reduced gene expression of three types of transmembrane proteins (perk, ire1, and atf6). GABA further regulated the expression of downstream apoptotic target genes (upregulation of bcl2; downregulation of bax, caspase3, and caspase9) through endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) pathways. This finding indicated the multifaceted benefits of GABA in combating chronic ammonia stress in crucian carp, providing valuable insights for the development of sustainable aquaculture practices.

Abstract Ratios of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGT), which are membrane lipids of bacteria and archaea, are at the base of several paleoenvironmental proxies. They are frequently applied to soils as well as lake‐ and marine sediments to generate records of past temperature and soil pH. To derive meaningful environmental information from these reconstructions, high analytical reproducibility is required. Based on submitted results by 39 laboratories from across the world, which employ a diverse range of analytical and quantification methods, we explored the reproducibility of brGDGT‐based proxies (MBT′5ME, IR, and #ringstetra) measured on four soil samples and four soil lipid extracts. Correct identification and integration of 5‐ and 6‐methyl brGDGTs is a prerequisite for the robust calculation of proxy values, but this can be challenging as indicated by the large inter‐interlaboratory variation. The exclusion of statistical outliers improves the reproducibility, where the remaining uncertainty translates into a temperature offset from median proxy values of 0.3–0.9°C and a pH offset of 0.05–0.3. There is no apparent systematic impact of the extraction method and sample preparation steps on the brGDGT ratios. Although reported GDGT concentrations are generally consistent within laboratories, they vary greatly between laboratories. This large variability in brGDGT quantification may relate to variations in ionization efficiency or specific mass spectrometer settings possibly impacting the response of brGDGTs masses relative to that of the internal standard used. While ratio values of GDGT are generally comparable, quantities can currently not be compared between laboratories.

With the ongoing advancements in porous asphalt pavement and the recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), there is a need to develop a new class of high-performance epoxy asphalt (EA) to enhance the performance of the porous structure and facilitate the efficient utilization of RAP. To achieve this objective, polyethylene glycol (PEG) with number-average molecular weights (Mn) of 200, 400, 800, and 1000 g/mol were individually incorporated into epoxy asphalt. The critical performance of different PEG-modified EAs in comparison with high-viscosity asphalt or commercial EA was investigated for PAM containing RAP. The results indicate that the addition of PEG leads to higher initial viscosity and extended construction time for EA with aged asphalt from RAP. The EA with higher Mn PEG causes a slight reduction in high-temperature performance for PAM containing RAP. However, it mitigates the deformability, resistance to water damage, long-term friction stability, and anti-strip performance deterioration induced by RAP. PEG-modified EA imparts excellent skid resistance and surface friction performance to RAP porous mixtures. Overall, PEG-modified EA porous structures containing RAP exhibit superior workability and toughness compared to commercial EA, and higher strength and road performance compared to high-viscosity asphalt. In terms of one-way ANOVA, Mn significantly influenced various key physical and functional parameters of EA mixtures with RAP. EA modified with PEG having Mn in the range of 800–1000 g/mol is recommended as a binder for porous structures containing RAP. The research is highly relevant towards the exploratory design and applications of thermosetting PEG-modified EA in the porous mixture and waste concrete.

This study was to demonstrate that the alleviate effect of synbiotics (Bacillus subtilis and xylo-oligosaccharide) on NaHCO3-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction and autophagy of crucian carp (Carassius auratus). [INLINE:1] Activated G-protein-coupled receptor 39 (GPR39) has been shown to attenuate inflammation by interacting with sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (PGC-1α). However, whether GPR39 attenuates neuropathic pain remains unclear. In this study, we established a Sprague-Dawley rat model of spared nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain and found that GPR39 expression was significantly decreased in neurons and microglia in the spinal dorsal horn compared with sham-operated rats. Intrathecal injection of TC-G 1008, a specific agonist of GPR39, significantly alleviated mechanical allodynia in the rats with spared nerve injury, improved spinal cord mitochondrial biogenesis, and alleviated neuroinflammation. These changes were abolished by GPR39 small interfering RNA (siRNA), Ex-527 (SIRT1 inhibitor), and PGC-1α siRNA. Taken together, these findings show that GPR39 activation ameliorates mechanical allodynia by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway in rats with spared nerve injury.

Thermosetting resins have advantages such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and aging resistance, and have excellent prospects for practical application as asphalt modifiers. In order to promote the research of thermosetting resin modified asphalt, to provide direction for its further research, this paper reviews the research progress of thermosetting resin modified asphalt in recent years. The material composition, modification mechanism, and curing behavior of epoxy asphalt, thermosetting polyurethane modified asphalt, unsaturated polyester modified asphalt, and other thermosetting resin modified asphalts are overviewed. Different types of thermosetting resin modified asphalt have different performances, the performance advantages of different thermosetting resin modified asphalts are summarized. At the same time, the existing problems in thermosetting resin modified asphalt and further research directions are provided. Encouraging researchers to produce thermosetting resin modified asphalts using waste or bio-based materials, and to study the recycling technologies and life cycle assessment of thermosetting resin modified asphalt. This paper provides a reference for the study of thermosetting resin modified asphalt.

The ratio of leaf carotenoid to chlorophyll (Car/Chl) is an indicator of vegetation photosynthesis, development and responses to stress. However, the correlation between Car and Chl, and their overlapping absorption in the visible spectral domain pose a challenge for optical remote sensing of their ratio. This study aims to investigate combinations of vegetation indices (VIs) to minimize the influence of Car-Chl correlation, thus being more sensitive to the variability in the ratio across vegetation species and sites. VIs sensitive to Car and Chl variability were combined into four candidates of combinations, using a simulated dataset from the PROSPECT model. The VI combinations were then tested using six simulated datasets with different Car-Chl correlations, and evaluated against four independent datasets. The ratio of the carotenoid triangle ratio index (CTRI) with the red-edge chlorophyll index (CIred-edge) was found least influenced by the Car-Chl correlation and demonstrated a superior ability for estimating Car/Chl variability. Compared with published VIs and two machine learning algorithms, CTRI/CIred-edge also showed the optimal performance in the four field datasets. This new VI combination could be useful to provide insights in spatiotemporal variability in the leaf Car/Chl ratio, applicable for assessing vegetation physiology, phenology, and response to environmental stress. Background: Polygonum orientale L. (PO) has demonstrated notable efficacy in treating coronary heart disease. Previous research identified eight key active components in PO for cardiomyocyte protection, but the underlying mechanisms remained unclear; Methods: Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to identify potential target proteins of PO’s active components. Experimental models assessed the cardioprotective effects and mechanisms; Results: Network analysis and molecular docking revealed that the active components exhibited the highest binding affinity with SOD2, indicating it as a key element in the cardiac protection of PO. In vivo, PO extract improved myocardial structure and function, and increased SOD2 protein levels. In vitro, the active components of PO (Mixture) mitigated oxidative stress and apoptosis, upregulating SIRT3 and decreasing acetylated SOD2, leading to increased SOD2 and reduced ROS levels. The observed effects were reversed by a SIRT3 inhibitor, indicating the involvement of the SIRT3/SOD2 signaling pathway; Conclusions: This comprehensive approach elucidated the critical mechanisms underlying the cardioprotective properties of PO’s bioactive constituents, highlighting the regulation of the SIRT3/SOD2 signaling pathway as a new mechanism for PO’s anti-cardiovascular disease effects, and suggesting the Mixture’s potential as a promising drug candidate.

The utilization of MnO anodes with high storage capacity is significantly hindered by rapid capacity fading and inadequate rate capability, stemming from substantial volume fluctuations and low electrical conductivity. Crafting a composite comprising sulfur and fluorine co-modified MnO nanoparticles integrated with sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon matrices promises enhanced electrochemical performance yet poses formidable obstacles. Here, we present a straightforward synthetic strategy for in situ growth of sulfur and fluorine co-modified MnO nanoparticles onto sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon scaffolds. This integration effectively mitigates volume variations and enhances electrical conductivity. As a result, the SF-MnO/SNC composite demonstrates remarkable cycling stability and rate capability when employed as a lithium-ion battery anode. Remarkably, it achieves a high reversible capacity of 975 mAh g−¹ after 80 cycles at 0.1 A g−¹ and retains a substantial capacity of 498 mAh g−¹ even at a high rate of 2.0 A g−¹. The concise synthesis method and exceptional rate properties render the SF-MnO/SNC composite a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The strategy of simultaneously doping oxides and carbon will bring new ideas to the research of oxide anodes.

Summary: Orexin is a neuropeptide released from hypothalamus regulating feeding, sleeping, arousal, and cardiovascular activity. Past research has demonstrated that orexin receptor 2 (OX2R) agonist infusion in the brain results in sympathoexcitatory responses. Here, we found that epicardial administration of OX2R agonism leads to opposite responses. We proved that OX2R is expressed mainly in DRG neurons and transported to sensory nerve endings innervating the heart. In a capsaicin-induced cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex (CSAR) model, we recorded the calcium influx in DRG neurons, measured heart rate variability, and examined the PVN c-Fos activity to prove that epicardial OX2R agonism administration could attenuate capsaicin-induced CSAR. We further showed that OX2R agonism could partially rescue acute myocardial infarction by reducing sympathetic overactivation. Our data indicate that epicardial application of OX2R agonist exerts a cardioprotective effect by attenuating CSAR. This OX2R-mediated heart-brain axis may provide therapeutic targets for acute cardiovascular diseases.

The three-dimensional (3D) plant chlorophyll distribution plays an essential role in plant physiological and ecological analysis. The hyperspectral LiDAR (HSL) technology, as a new active technology, has the advantage of directly and simultaneously obtaining plant hyperspectral and 3D spatial information. It provides an alternative opportunity for fast and nondestructive 3D plant chlorophyll estimation. Current estimation models are developed by statistical relationships between HSL spectra and plant chlorophyll content, which perform limited robustness and lack physical mechanisms. The leaf-canopy radiative transfer models (RTMs) could describe physical responses between spectra and chlorophyll content, and show great robustness from optical hyperspectral data, which have the potential to overcome the limitation of current estimation models. However, it is unclear whether leaf-canopy RTMs could be applied to HSL spectra for 3D chlorophyll mapping. Therefore, this study explored the potential of a leaf-canopy RTM with HSL spectra for 3D plant chlorophyll estimation. Firstly, an optimal leaf RTM was selected from a series of PROSEPCT models, and determined by estimating leaf-scale chlorophyll content across multi-species and multi-state leaves. Then, the 4SAIL model, a canopy RTM, was optimized to meet the active detection mechanism of the HSL technology. Next, coupling the best PROSPECT with optimized 4SAIL models was used as the leaf-canopy RTM. The 3D chlorophyll distribution was estimated by the leaf-canopy RTM with a lookup table (LUT) algorithm under six cost functions. Finally, the performance of 14 vegetation indice (VI) models was tested as a comparison. Results demonstrated that the PROSPECT-5 model was the best leaf RTM with the best R2 of 0.60. The combination of PROSPECT-5 and optimized 4SAIL model could successfully achieve 3D plant chlorophyll estimation. This leaf-canopy estimation RTM with the best cost function (Least square estimator) had the best accuracy with an R2 of 0.73. Its accuracy was the same as the median accuracy of the best VI model (MTCI model), and higher than that of other VI models. The estimated and actual 3D chlorophyll distributions were consistent. The application of the leaf-canopy RTM with HSL technology offers an alternative approach to plant physiological and ecological research.

Abstract Background Ankyrin repeat domain 49 (ANKRD49) has been found to be highly expressed in multiple cancer including lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous carcinoma (LUSC). However, the function of ANKRD49 in the pathogenesis of NSCLC still remains elusive. Previously, ANKRD49 has been demonstrated to promote the invasion and metastasis of A549 cells, a LUAD cell line, via activating the p38-ATF-2-MMP2/MMP9 pathways. Considering the heterogeneity of tumor cells, the function and mechanism of ANKRD49 in NSCLC need more NSCLC-originated cells to clarify. Methods Real-time qPCR was employed to test ANKRD49 expression levels in nine pairs of fresh NSCLC tissues and the corresponding adjacent normal tissues. The function of ANKRD49 was investigated using overexpression and RNA interference assays in lung adenocarcinoma cell line (NCI-H1299) and lung squamous carcinoma cell line (NCI-H1703) through gelatin zymography, cell counting kit-8, colony formation, wound healing, migration and invasion assays mmunoprecipitation was performed to in vitro. Immunoprecipitation was performed to test the interaction of c-Jun and ATF2. Chromatin immunoprecipitation was conducted to assess the transcriptional regulation of ATF2/c-Jun on MMP-2/9. Moreover, the tumorigenicity of ANKRD49 was evaluated in nude mice models and the involved signal molecular was also measured by immunohistochemical method. Results We found that the levels of ANKRD49 in cancerous tissues were higher than those in adjacent normal tissues. in vitro assay showed that ANKRD49 promoted the migration and invasion of NCI-H1299 and NCI-H1703 cells via enhancing the levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Furthermore, ANKRD49 elevated phosphorylation of JNK and then activated c-Jun and ATF2 which interact in nucleus to promote the binding of ATF2:c-Jun with the promoter MMP-2 or MMP-9. In vivo assay showed that ANKRD49 promoted lung metastasis of injected-NSCLC cells and the high metastatic rate was positively correlated with the high expression of ANKRD49, MMP-2, MMP-9, p-JNK, p-c-Jun and p-ATF2. Conclusion The present study indicated that ANKRD49 accelerated the invasion and metastasis of NSCLC cells via JNK-mediated transcription activation of c-Jun and ATF2 which regulated the expression of MMP-2/MMP-9. The molecular mechanisms of ANKRD49’s function is different from those found in A549 cells. The current study is a supplement and improvement to the previous research.

Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) represent a significant component of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) microenvironments which play a critical role in tumor progression and drug resistance. Tumor-on-a-chip technology has provided a powerful in vitro platform to investigate the crosstalk between activated HSCs and HCC cells by mimicking physiological architecture with precise spatiotemporal control. Here we developed a tri-cell culture microfluidic chip to evaluate the impact of HSCs on HCC progression. On-chip analysis revealed activated HSCs contributed to endothelial invasion, HCC drug resistance and natural killer (NK) cell exhaustion. Cytokine array and RNA sequencing analysis were combined to indicate the iron-binding protein LIPOCALIN-2 (LCN-2) as a key factor in remodeling tumor microenvironments in the HCC-on-a-chip. LCN-2 targeted therapy demonstrated robust anti-tumor effects both in vitro 3D biomimetic chip and in vivo mouse model, including angiogenesis inhibition, sorafenib sensitivity promotion and NK-cell cytotoxicity enhancement. Taken together, the microfluidic platform exhibited obvious advantages in mimicking functional characteristics of tumor microenvironments and developing targeted therapies.

In order to study the characteristics of metabolites in Monascus cheese, Monascus cheese BC20 and Monascus cheese ZX-99 were used as experimental groups, and commercially available blue mold cheese and white mold cheese were used as control groups. The low molecular weight metabolites involved in the four cheeses were analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics. Metabolites that were only enriched in the experimental groups (VIP>1，P2) and had no significant difference between the experimental groups (VIP≤1，P≥0.05) were considered as the characteristics of Monascus cheese. The results showed that among the 2510 metabolites identified in positive and negative ion modes, 23 substances were preliminarily considered as characteristic metabolites of Monascus cheese. Eight of these substances, including cucurbitacin e, fusidic acid, quinapril, methyl dopa, orcinol, licoricesaponin h2, alfuzosin, and 25-desacetyl rifapentin had certain beneficial activities. Through comparison between the experimental groups and control groups, there were 10 identical differential metabolic pathways. The enrichment degree of the protein digestion and absorption pathway was relatively high, and the proportion of pathways related to amino acids was the largest. Among the differential metabolites involved in these two pathways, the substance contents of propionic acid, DL-tyrosine, homoharringtonine, 2-isopropylmalic acid, creatine, and succinic were significantly increased in the two Monascus cheeses (P

Abstract Background There is a lack of research regarding the relationship between creatinine to cystatin C to waist circumference ratio (CCR/WC ratios) and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to evaluate the association between CCR/WC ratios and incident T2DM in Chinese adults. Methods This prospective study was from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018). The participants were divided into three groups by tertiaries of the CCR/WC ratios. Cox proportional‐hazards models were used to identify the relationship between CCR/WC and T2DM. Results Overall, 5938 participants were included for analysis, 766 of whom developed T2DM between 2011 and 2018. Risk of incident T2DM was decreased with tertiaries 2, 3 versus tertiary 1 of the CCR/WC index (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.772 [95% confidence interval 0.647–0.921] and 0.724 [0.596–0.880], p for trend = .001 across tertiaries of the CCR/WC index). The results were consistent excluding participants with T2DM in the first 2 years. Conclusions This study demonstrated that CCR/WC was negatively correlated with the risk of T2DM in Chinese adults. Early detection is necessary to control the development of T2DM in Chinese with low CCR/WC levels.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive and irreversible fibroinflammatory disorder, accompanied by pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and dysregulated gut microbiota. Recently, accumulating evidence has supported a correlation between gut dysbiosis and CP development. However, whether gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to CP pathogenesis remains unclear. Herein, an experimental CP was induced by repeated high-dose caerulein injections. The broad-spectrum antibiotics (ABX) and ABX targeting Gram-positive (G+) or Gram-negative bacteria (G–) were applied to explore the specific roles of these bacteria. Gut dysbiosis was observed in both mice and in CP patients, which was accompanied by a sharply reduced abundance for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producers, especially G+ bacteria. Broad-spectrum ABX exacerbated the severity of CP, as evidenced by aggravated pancreatic fibrosis and gut dysbiosis, especially the depletion of SCFAs-producing G+ bacteria. Additionally, depletion of SCFAs-producing G+ bacteria rather than G– bacteria intensified CP progression independent of TLR4, which was attenuated by supplementation with exogenous SCFAs. Finally, SCFAs modulated pancreatic fibrosis through inhibition of macrophage infiltration and M2 phenotype switching. The study supports a critical role for SCFAs-producing G+ bacteria in CP. Therefore, modulation of dietary-derived SCFAs or G+ SCFAs-producing bacteria may be considered a novel interventive approach for the management of CP.

Transabdominal ultrasound is a promising imaging modality for pancreatic cystic lesions. This study aims to determine if transabdominal ultrasonography with CT fusion (TAUS-f) using volume navigation can be used to measure pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) compared to CT alone. We evaluated 33 patients prospectively with known PCLs. The readers evaluated each PCL’s size and imaging characteristics on TAUS-f and CT alone. These were compared to endoscopic ultrasonography reports. A total of 43 PCLs from 32 patients were evaluated. The detection rate by TAUS-f was 93%. Two of the three undetected PCLs were in the tail of the pancreas. Inter-reader variabilities for TAUS-f and CT were 0.005 cm and 0.03 cm, respectively. Subgroup analysis by size and location demonstrated that inter-modality variability between TAUS-f and CT was smallest for lesions < 1.5 cm with a size difference of −0.13 cm for each reader and smallest in the pancreatic head with a size difference of −0.16 cm and −0.17 cm for readers 1 and 2. We found that TAUS-f effectively evaluates PCLs compared to CT alone, thus suggesting that it should be considered part of the surveillance algorithm for a subset of patients.

Enzyme-driven micro/nanomotors consuming in situ chemical fuels have attracted lots of attention for biomedical applications. However, motor systems composed by organism-derived organics that maximize the therapeutic efficacy of enzymatic products remain challenging. Herein, swimming proteomotors based on biocompatible urease and human serum albumin are constructed for enhanced antitumor therapy via active motion and ammonia amplification. By decomposing urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia, the designed proteomotors are endowed with self-propulsive capability, which leads to improved internalization and enhanced penetration in vitro. As a glutamine synthetase inhibitor, the loaded l-methionine sulfoximine further prevents the conversion of toxic ammonia into non-toxic glutamine in both tumor and stromal cells, resulting in local ammonia amplification. After intravesical instillation, the proteomotors achieve longer bladder retention and thus significantly inhibit the growth of orthotopic bladder tumor in vivo without adverse effects. We envision that the as-developed swimming proteomotors with amplification of the product toxicity may be a potential platform for active cancer treatment.

Leaf functional traits are key indicators of plant functions useful for inferring complex plant processes, including their responses to environmental changes. Vegetation indices (VIs) composed of a few reflectance wavelengths hold the advantages of being relatively simple and effective and have been widely used within remote sensing to estimate leaf traits. However, the difference between the reflectance from the upper and lower part of the leaf suggests that leaf reflectance mainly provides one-sided information, constraining its ability to estimate leaf functional traits. Leaf transmittance, on the other hand, gives information about the whole leaf and has more potential to be sensitive to changes in leaf biochemistry. As transmittance-based VI is rare, this study aims to propose new transmittance-based VIs for accurate estimations of leaf traits. Three forms, i.e. the normalized difference VI, the simple ratio VI, and the difference VI were employed, and wavelength selection for transmittance-based and reflectance-based VIs were conducted, respectively. The applicability of these VIs for estimating four leaf functional traits (leaf chlorophyll (Cab), leaf carotenoids (Car), equivalent water thickness (EWT), and leaf mass per area (LMA)) were evaluated. Cross-validation using three datasets of field observations and sensitivity analysis showed that the VIs constructed using transmittance were relatively less affected by interferences from other leaf parameters, improving the estimation accuracy of Car, EWT, and LMA compared to their optimal reflectance counterparts (RMSE reduced by 2% to 15%, and MAE reduced by 7% to 20% for the pooled dataset). Our study revealed that the normalized difference VI based on transmittance showed considerable sensitivity to Car, EWT, and LMA, whereas the difference VI based on reflectance was effective in indicating Cab. The proposed transmittance-based VIs will aid remote monitoring of leaf traits and thereby plant adaptations and acclimation to changes in environmental conditions.

Leaf mass per area (LMA) and equivalent water thickness (EWT) are key indicators providing information on plant growth status and agricultural management, and their retrieval is commonly done through radiative transfer models (RTMs) such as the PROSPECT model. However, the PROSPECT model is frequently hampered by the ill-posed problem as a consequence of measurement and model uncertainties. Here, we propose a wavelength selection method to improve the inversion of EWT and LMA by integrating PROSPECT with a machine learning algorithm (Gaussian process regression (GPR); PROSPECT-GPR for short). The GPR model conducted sorting of wavelengths and the PROSPECT-D was used to determine the optimal number of characteristic wavelengths. The results demonstrated that the estimation of EWT (R2 = 0.80; RMSE = 0.0021) and LMA (R2 = 0.71; RMSE = 0.0021) using the proposed wavelengths and PROSPECT inversion all exhibited superior accuracy in comparison with those from previous studies. The efficacy of PROSPECT-GPR in exploring the spectral linkage among vegetation traits was demonstrated by selecting wavelengths associated with leaf structure parameter N and EWT (1368 nm) that turn out to contribute to the estimation of LMA. The findings lay a strong foundation for understanding the spectral linkage among vegetation traits, and the proposed wavelength selection method provides valuable insights for selecting informative spectral wavelengths for RTMs inversion and designing future remote sensors.

Abstract Background Both low‐carbohydrate (LC) and calorie-restricted (CR) diets have been shown to have metabolic benefits. However, the two regimens have yet to be thoroughly compared. We conducted a 12-week randomized trial to compare the effects of these diets separately and in combination on both weight loss and metabolic risk factors in overweight/obese individuals. Methods A total of 302 participants were randomized to LC diet (n = 76), CR diet (n = 75), LC + CR diet (n = 76), or normal control (NC) diet (n = 75) using a computer-based random number generator. The primary outcome was the change in body mass index (BMI). The secondary outcomes included body weight, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, body fat, and metabolic risk factors. All participants attended health education sessions during the trial. Results A total of 298 participants were analyzed. BMI change over 12 weeks was − 0.6 (95% CI, − 0.8 to − 0.3) kg/m2 in NC, − 1.3 (95% CI, − 1.5 to − 1.1) kg/m2 in CR, − 2.3 (95% CI, − 2.6 to − 2.1) kg/m2 in LC, and − 2.9 (95% CI, − 3.2 to − 2.6) kg/m2 in LC + CR. Abstract Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an aggressive solid tumour with a 5-year survival rate ranging from 7% to 20%. It is, therefore, urgent to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets to improve the outcomes of patients with CCA. SPRY-domain containing protein 4 (SPRYD4) contains SPRY domains that modulate protein–protein interaction in various biological processes; however, its role in cancer development is insufficiently explored. This study is the first to identify that SPRYD4 is downregulated in CCA tissues using multiple public datasets and a CCA cohort. Furthermore, the low expression of SPRYD4 was significantly associated with unfavourable clinicopathological characteristics and poor prognosis in patients with CCA, indicating that SPRYD4 could be a prognosis indicator of CCA. In vitro experiments revealed that SPRYD4 overexpression inhibited CCA cells proliferation and migration, whereas the proliferative and migratory capacity of CCA cells was enhanced after SPRYD4 deletion. Moreover, flow cytometry showed that SPRYD4 overexpression triggered the S/G2 cell phase arrest and promoted apoptosis in CCA cells. Furthermore, the tumour-inhibitory effect of SPRYD4 was validated in vivo using xenograft mouse models. SPRYD4 also showed a close association with tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes and important immune checkpoints including PD1, PD-L1 and CTLA4 in CCA. In conclusion, this study elucidated the role of SPRYD4 during CCA development and highlighted SPRYD4 as a novel biomarker and tumour suppressor in CCA.

Polymer-derived ultra-high-temperature ceramic (UHTC) nanocomposites have attracted growing attention due to the increasing demands for advanced thermal structure components in aerospace. Herein, hafnium carbide (HfC) whiskers are successfully fabricated in carbon fiber preforms via the polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) method. A novel carbon nanotube (CNT) template growth mechanism combined with the PDC method is proposed in this work, which is different from the conventional vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism that is commonly used for polymer-derived nanostructured ceramics. The CNTs are synthesized and proved to be the templates for fabricating the HfC whiskers, which are generated by the released low-molecular-weight gas such as CO, CO2, and CH4 during the pyrolysis of a Hf-containing precursor. The formed products are composed of inner single crystal HfC whiskers that are measured to be several tens of micrometers in length and 100–200 nm in diameter and outer HfC/HfO2 particles. Our work not only proposes a new strategy to prepare the HfC whiskers, but also puts forward a new thinking of the efficient utilization of a UHTC polymer precursor.

Although the role of FGFs in cardiovascular disease has attracted extensive attention, the potential role of FGF18 in pathological cardiac hypertrophy remains unknown. Here, the authors show the cardioprotective effect of FGF18 is mediated by maintaining redox homeostasis through FYN/Nox4 signaling.

We present a review of in situ observations regarding the interactions between tropical cyclones and the ocean in the western North Pacific for the year 2023. A total of at least 13 tropical cyclones occurred during this period. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Mawar recorded the yearly minimum pressure at 900 hPar. On average, each tropical cyclone captured 7.4 surface drifters and 25.2 Argo floats when the search radius is 300 km. During Guchol, the maximum in situ Lagrangian current reached 1.23 m/s, with sustained wind speeds of the tropical cyclone up to 31.7 m/s and a relative position of 174 km. Additionally, several Argo floats were active during tropical cyclones, with maximum sea surface temperature cooling reaching 0.66 °C. This annual review provides a comprehensive summary of the current state of in situ observations regarding tropical cyclone–ocean interaction. These findings serve as valuable references for both scientific research and operational forecasting.

Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) semiconducting material possesses a band gap of 1.05–1.2 eV and has been widely applied in single-junction solar cells. Based on its band gap, Sb2Se3 can also be used as the bottom cell absorber material in tandem solar cells. More importantly, Sb2Se3 solar cells exhibit excellent stability with nontoxic compositional elements. The band gap of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite is tunable over a wide range. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time a perovskite/antimony selenide four-terminal tandem solar cell with a specially designed and fabricated transparent electrode for an optimized spectral response. By adjusting the thickness of the transparent electrode layer of the top cell, the wide-band-gap perovskite top solar cell achieves an efficiency of 17.88%, while the optimized antimony selenide bottom cell delivers a power conversion efficiency of 7.85% by introducing a double electron transport layer. Finally, the four-terminal tandem solar cell achieves an impressive efficiency exceeding 20%. This work provides a new tandem device structure and demonstrates that antimony selenide is a promising absorber material for bottom cell applications in tandem solar cells.

Abstract Sepsis is a highly heterogeneous syndrome normally characterized by bacterial infection and dysregulated systemic inflammatory response that leads to multiple organ failure and death. Single anti‐inflammation or anti‐infection treatment exhibits limited survival benefit for severe cases. Here a biodegradable tobramycin‐loaded magnesium micromotor (Mg‐Tob motor) is successfully developed as a potential hydrogen generator and active antibiotic deliverer for synergistic therapy of sepsis. The peritoneal fluid of septic mouse provides an applicable space for Mg‐water reaction. Hydrogen generated sustainably and controllably from the motor interface propels the motion to achieve active drug delivery along with attenuating hyperinflammation. The developed Mg‐Tob motor demonstrates efficient protection from anti‐inflammatory and antibacterial activity both in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, it prevents multiple organ failure and significantly improves the survival rate up to 87.5% in a high‐grade sepsis model with no survival, whereas only about half of mice survive with the individual therapies. This micromotor displays the superior therapeutic effect of synergistic hydrogen‐chemical therapy against sepsis, thus holding great promise to be an innovative and translational drug delivery system to treat sepsis or other inflammation‐related diseases in the near future.

Early prediction of neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST) response for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients could help oncologists select individualized treatment and avoid toxic effects associated with ineffective therapy in patients unlikely to achieve pathologic complete response (pCR). The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of radiomic features of the peritumoral and tumoral regions from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) acquired at different time points of NAST for early treatment response prediction in TNBC. This study included 163 Stage I-III patients with TNBC undergoing NAST as part of a prospective clinical trial (NCT02276443). Peritumoral and tumoral regions of interest were segmented on DCE images at baseline (BL) and after two (C2) and four (C4) cycles of NAST. Ten first-order (FO) radiomic features and 300 gray-level-co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) features were calculated. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used to determine the most predictive features. Multivariate logistic regression models were used for performance assessment. Pearson correlation was used to assess intrareader and interreader variability. Seventy-eight patients (48%) had pCR (52 training, 26 testing), and 85 (52%) had non-pCR (57 training, 28 testing). Forty-six radiomic features had AUC at least 0.70, and 13 multivariate models had AUC at least 0.75 for training and testing sets. The Pearson correlation showed significant correlation between readers. In conclusion, Radiomic features from DCE-MRI are useful for differentiating pCR and non-pCR. Similarly, predictive radiomic models based on these features can improve early noninvasive treatment response prediction in TNBC patients undergoing NAST.

Introduction:Cynanchum auriculatum (CA) is usually used to treat digestive disorders, such as anorexia, enteritis, dysentery, and indigestion. Functional dyspepsia (FD) is characterized by a group of symptoms associated with the gastroduodenal region. Recent pharmacological studies have demonstrated the efficacy of CA for treating FD. However, the pharmacokinetics (PK) and tissue distribution of CA in physiological and FD states is still unclear. The present study aimed to clarify the differences in PK parameters and tissue distribution of the four major active components of CA (baishouwu benzophenone, deacylmet-aplexigenin, qingyangshengenin, and syringic acid) under both physiological and FD states.Methods: For this, normal and FD rats were orally administered 10 mg/kg CA extract. Then, plasma and tissue (heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, brain, stomach, and small intestine) samples were obtained. The four active components of CA in rat plasma and tissues were quantified by developing and validating a fast and reliable ultra–high–performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry method.Results: The area under the plasma concentration–time curve from time zero to time t (AUC0-t) of baishouwu benzophenone was significantly lower in the FD group than in the normal group (p < 0.01). The FD group had significantly lower (p < 0.001) apparent volume of distribution and plasma clearance of qing-yangshengenin and significantly higher (p < 0.05) AUC0-t of deacylmetaplexigenin and qingyangshengenin. The four active components were rapidly distributed into various tissues, and the main target organs of CA activity were the stomach and small intestine. In addition, baishouwu benzophenone, deacylmetaplexigenin, and qingyangshengenin could cross the blood-brain barrier, indicating that the brain may be another target organ in the treatment of FD.Discussion: These results indicate that the pathological state of FD alters the PK behavior and tissue distribution characteristics of baishouwu benzophenone, deacylmetaplexigenin, qingyangshengenin, and syringic acid in the CA extract, providing an experimental basis for the role of CA in FD treatment.

Leaf area index (LAI) is an important biophysical parameter of vegetation and serves as a significant indicator for assessing forest ecosystems. Multi-source remote sensing data enables large-scale and dynamic surface observations, providing effective data for quantifying various indices in forest and evaluating ecosystem changes. However, employing single-source remote sensing spectral or LiDAR waveform data poses limitations for LAI inversion, making the integration of multi-source remote sensing data a trend. Currently, the fusion of active and passive remote sensing data for LAI inversion primarily relies on empirical models, which are mainly constructed based on field measurements and do not provide a good explanation of the fusion mechanism. In this study, we aimed to estimate LAI based on physical model using both spectral imagery and LiDAR waveform, exploring whether data fusion improved the accuracy of LAI inversion. Specifically, based on the physical model geometric-optical and radiative transfer (GORT), a fusion strategy was designed for LAI inversion. To ensure inversion accuracy, we enhanced the data processing by introducing a constraint-based EM waveform decomposition method. Considering the spatial heterogeneity of canopy/ground reflectivity ratio in regional forests, calculation strategy was proposed to improve this parameter in inversion model. The results showed that the constraint-based EM waveform decomposition method improved the decomposition accuracy with an average 12% reduction in RMSE, yielding more accurate waveform energy parameters. The proposed calculation strategy for the canopy/ground reflectivity ratio, considering dynamic variation of parameter, effectively enhanced previous research that relied on a fixed value, thereby improving the inversion accuracy that increasing on the correlation by 5% to 10% and on R2 by 62.5% to 132.1%. Based on the inversion strategy we proposed, data fusion could effectively be used for LAI inversion. The inversion accuracy achieved using both spectral and LiDAR data (correlation=0.81, R2 = 0.65, RMSE=1.01) surpassed that of using spectral data or LiDAR alone. This study provides a new inversion strategy for large-scale and high-precision LAI inversion, supporting the field of LAI research.

Liquid polymeric precursors have found wide applications as a matrix source for continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) because of their excellent fluidity and high ceramic yield. In the present study, a processable liquid single-source-precursor was synthesized using allylhydropolycarbosilane (AHPCS) and low-cost hafnium tetrachloride (HfCl4) as raw materials to form final SiC-HfC-C nanocomposites by well-known polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) approach. The precursor synthesis, thermal behavior, polymer-to-ceramic transformation and ceramic phase evolution were investigated by FT-IR, TGA, XRD and TEM. The TGA results show that the obtained single-source-precursor exhibits very high ceramic yields of over 80.0 wt% after heat treated at 1400 °C. After annealing at 1600 °C, the resultant SiC-HfC-C nanocomposites contain SiC@C and HfC@C nanoparticles with SiC and HfC as cores and amorphous carbon as shells. The present single-source-precursor is candidate material for CMC applications due to its liquidity and high ceramic yield.
