Abstract

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have attracted significant attention as a emerging environmental contaminant. The biological toxicities and ecological health risks associated with PFASs have emerged as a popular subject for ecotoxicology related research. PFASs have a detrimental impact on individual microbes in the environment. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to PFASs can disrupt the composition, structure and enzyme activity of the microbial community in the environment, disrupting the normal cycling of materials and energy in the ecosystem. This paper reviewed the impact of PFASs on microbial community structure and diversity across various environmental media, namely freshwater, marine and soil. Additionally, it summarizes the effects of enzyme activity and function in response to PFASs. Based on these findings, an assessment of the future direction of ecological risk assessment of PFASs was conducted to provide a theoretical basis and support for unbiased environmental and ecological risk assessment of PFASs. Abstract

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have been referred to as “forever chemicals” and are toxic and bioaccumulative. Previous studies have indicated that the defluorination of PFOA is incomplete by various advanced reductive processes. In this study, we proposed combining sulfite (SO32−) with iodide (I−) for the advanced reduction of PFOA under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. The degradation and defluorination ratios of PFOA reached 100% within 30 min and 99.2% within 6 h, respectively. Hydrated electrons (eaq−) and VUV photolysis are major contributors to PFOA removal. The VUV/SO32−/I−system was superior to UV/SO32−/I−for PFOA decomposition with a synergistic factor of 1.36 and a higher eaq−yield. The optimal dosage of I−could be reduced by half owing to the stronger absorption coefficient under VUV radiation. HCO3−, Cu2+, and humic acid could inhibit the decomposition of PFOA. Fe3+and SO42−had slight and negligible effects on the performance of the VUV/SO32−/I−process, respectively. We determined the most active sites for nucleophilic attack by utilizing the Fukui function indices of PFOA anions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. C7 polyfluorinated carboxylate esters, short-chain hydrogen-containing and sulfonated intermediates were identified in PFOA degradation for the first time in the study. This study provides a feasible approach for the environmental remediation of PFOA.

49. Characterisation of the formation of halobenzoquinone disinfection by-products in typical water sources at different water quality stages

Abstract

As an emerging class of uncontrolled disinfection by-products, halobenzoquinones (HBQs) are 3 to 4 orders of magnitude more cytotoxic and genotoxic than regulated disinfection by-products. However, the formation of HBQs in different types of water sources is still unclear. In this study, 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ) was selected as the representative species of HBQs to evaluate the formation characteristics during the chlorination of Yellow River diversion water, river water, south–north diversion water and mountain water. Principal component analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out on the relationship between water quality characteristics and the formation of disinfection by-products in order to understand the formation potential of HBQs in each water source and the organic properties of disinfection by-product precursors such as HBQs. The results showed that different water sources have different capacities to form HBQs. The DCBQ formation potential (DCBQ-FP) of river water was the highest, followed by mountain water. The DCBQ-FP of Yellow River diversion water and south–north water diversion water was relatively the lowest. The DCBQ-FP was higher during the high temperature and high algal phase than during the low temperature and low turbidity phase. DCBQ precursors were mainly derived from algal-derived organic matter, low molecular neutrals (LMWN) during periods of high temperature and algal blooms. Aromatic compounds contribute significantly during the regular water quality period. The relationship with microbial metabolites (SMP) was high during periods of low temperature and low turbidity.

50. Water quality characteristics of surface and groundwater sources in Lower reaches of Yellow River, Northern China

Abstract

Drinking water sources including reservoirs, rivers, springs and groundwater in lower reaches of Yellow River, have been seasonally investigated to assess the water quality characteristics of different types of water sources during 2019 and 2021, and to find their differences in water quality based on multivariate statistical analysis and hydrochemical types. The water quality varied greatly among different water bodies, and based on the water quality characteristics, the four types of water bodies were divided into surface (reservoirs and rivers) and groundwater (groundwater and springs). Five principal components were extracted by, together explaining 84% of all the variance information by log-transformed principal component analysis (PCA), which represented anions, formation potential of disinfection by-products precursors (DBPFP), nutrients and phytoplankton biomass effected the water quality of these waterbodies. The matter sources of surface water and groundwater were quite different, with dominant by organic compounds and inorganic matters in surface water and groundwater, respectively. However, the similar humus carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (HS-C/N) values indicated that the organic matter in groundwater is affected to a certain extent by the replenishing surface water. In the aspect of inorganic ions, these waterbodies were more affected by Na-Cl-SO4 in wet season, while Ca-HCO3-CO3 in dry season. Gibbs diagram suggested that anions and cations were mainly contributed by atmospheric precipitation for the surface water, while they were mainly derived from rock weathering for groundwater. It is hoped that this study will help to evaluate the pollution risk and the feasibility of long-term implementation of artificial source remediation projects.
