5. PhasePerturbation: Speech Data Augmentation via Phase Perturbation for Automatic Speech Recognition

Abstract

Most of the current speech data augmentation methods operate on either the raw waveform or the amplitude spectrum of speech. In this paper, we propose a novel speech data augmentation method called PhasePerturbation that operates dynamically on the phase spectrum of speech. Instead of statically rotating a phase by a constant degree, PhasePerturbation utilizes three dynamic phase spectrum operations, i.e., a randomization operation, a frequency masking operation, and a temporal masking operation, to enhance the diversity of speech data. We conduct experiments on wav2vec2.0 pre-trained ASR models by fine-tuning them with the PhasePerturbation augmented TIMIT corpus. The experimental results demonstrate 10.9\% relative reduction in the word error rate (WER) compared with the baseline model fine-tuned without any augmentation operation. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves additional improvements (12.9\% and 15.9\%) in WER by complementing the Vocal Tract Length Perturbation (VTLP) and the SpecAug, which are both amplitude spectrum-based augmentation methods. The results highlight the capability of PhasePerturbation to improve the current amplitude spectrum-based augmentation methods.

Abstract

High hyperopia is a common and severe form of refractive error. Genetic factors play important roles in the development of high hyperopia but the exact gene responsible for this condition is mostly unknown. We identified a large Chinese family with autosomal dominant high hyperopia. A genome-wide linkage scan mapped the high hyperopia to chromosome 11p12-q13.3, with maximum log of the odds scores of 4.68 at theta = 0 for D11S987. Parallel whole-exome sequencing detected a novel c.3377delG (p.Gly1126Valfs*31) heterozygous mutation in the MYRF gene within the linkage interval. Whole-exome sequencing in other 121 probands with high hyperopia identified additional novel mutations in MYRF within two other families: a de novo c.3274_3275delAG (p.Leu1093Profs*22) heterozygous mutation and a c.3194+2T>C heterozygous mutation. All three mutations are located in the C-terminal region of MYRF and are predicted to result in truncation of that portion. Two patients from two of the three families developed angle-closure glaucoma. These three mutations were present in neither the ExAC database nor our in-house whole-exome sequencing data from 3280 individuals. No other truncation mutations in MYRF were detected in the 3280 individuals. Knockdown of myrf resulted in small eye size in zebrafish. These evidence all support that truncation mutations in the C-terminal region of MYRF are responsible for autosomal dominant high hyperopia in these families. Our results may provide useful clues for further understanding the functional role of the C-terminal region of this critical myelin regulatory factor, as well as the molecular pathogenesis of high hyperopia and its associated angle-closure glaucoma.

Abstract

Most cryptocurrency systems or systems based on blockchain technology are currently using the elliptic curves digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) on the secp256k1 curve, which is susceptible to backdoors implemented by the curve creator (secp256k1). The paper proposes a multiple elliptic curves digi-tal signature algorithm (MECDSA), which allows not only for setting the number of elliptic curves according to practical security requirements, but also for editing the parameters of each elliptic curve. The performance analy-sis proves that the scheme is secure and efficient, and can avoid any back-doors implemented by curve creators. We suggest that the systems based on blockchain should operate in two elliptic curves considering the contradic-tion between security and efficiency.

30. Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Candidate Gene Analysis for Fiber Quality Traits in Upland Cotton.

Abstract

Superior fiber quality is one of the most important objectives in cotton breeding. To detect the genetic basis underlying fiber quality, an F2 population containing 413 plants was constructed by crossing Jifeng 914 and Jifeng 173, both of which have superior fiber quality, with Jifeng 173 being better. Five fiber quality traits were investigated in the F2, F2:3, F2:4, and F2:5 populations. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping was conducted based on a high-density genetic map containing 11,488 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and spanning 4202.12 cM in length. Transgressive segregation patterns and complex correlations in the five tested traits were observed. A total of 108 QTLs were found, including 13 major effect QTLs that contributed more than 10% toward phenotypic variation (PV) and 9 stable QTLs that could be repeatedly mapped in different generations. Chromosome A7 contained 12 QTL, ranking the first. No QTL was found on chromosomes D1 and D11. Two QTLs could be repeatedly detected in three populations, including qFL-D3-2 in F2, F2:4, and F2:5 with 9.18–21.45% of PV and qFS-A11-1 in F2:3, F2:4, and F2:5 with 6.05–10.41% of PV. Another seven stable QTLs could be detected in two populations, including four major effect QTLs: qFL-A12-3, qFS-D10-2, qMC-D6-2, and qMC-D8-1. Fourteen QTL-overlapping regions were found, which might explain the complex correlations among the five phenotypic traits. Four regions on chromosome A11, D3, D6, and D10 covered by both stable and major effect QTLs are promising for further fine mapping. The genomic regions of the two QTLs detected in three populations and the four major effect QTLs contain 810 genes. Gene functional analysis revealed that the annotated genes are mainly involved in protein binding and metabolic pathways. Fifteen candidate genes in the qFL-D3-2 region are highly expressed in fiber or ovules during fiber initiation, elongation, secondary cell wall thickening, or maturation stages. qRT-PCR revealed that Ghir_D03G005440.1 and Ghir_D03G011310.1 may play a role in promoting fiber initiation, while Ghir_D03G006470.1 may be beneficial for promoting fiber elongation.
