Cavity electromagnonic system, which simultaneously consists of cavities for photons, magnons (quanta of spin waves), and acoustic phonons, provides an exciting platform to achieve coherent energy transduction among different physical systems down to single quantum level. Here we report a dynamical phase-field model that allows simulating the coupled dynamics of the electromagnetic waves, magnetization, and strain in 3D multiphase systems. As examples of application, we computationally demonstrate the excitation of hybrid magnon-photon modes (magnon polaritons), Floquet-induced magnonic Aulter-Townes splitting, dynamical energy exchange (Rabi oscillation) and relative phase control (Ramsey interference) between the two magnon polariton modes. The simulation results are consistent with analytical calculations based on Floquet Hamiltonian theory. Simulations are also performed to design a cavity electro-magno-mechanical system that enables the triple phonon-magnon-photon resonance, where the resonant excitation of a chiral, fundamental (n=1) transverse acoustic phonon mode by magnon polaritons is demonstrated. With the capability to predict coupling strength, dissipation rates, and temporal evolution of photon/magnon/phonon mode profiles using fundamental materials parameters as the inputs, the present dynamical phase-field model represents a valuable computational tool to guide the fabrication of the cavity electromagnonic system and the design of operating conditions for applications in quantum sensing, transduction, and communication.

An analytical theory is developed for predicting the nonlinear susceptibility of ionic polarization to continuous electromagnetic waves in both bulk and strained thin film ferroelectrics. Using a perturbation method for solving the nonlinear equation of motion for ionic polarization within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, the full second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor is derived as a function of frequency, temperature, and strain. The theory predicts the coexistence of a significantly enhanced second-order dielectric susceptibility and a relatively low dielectric loss in BaTiO3 films with a strain-stabilized monoclinic ferroelectric phase and in a strained SrTiO3 film near its temperature-driven second-order ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition. This work establishes a theoretical framework for predicting and exploiting nonlinear interactions between THz waves and ferroelectric materials, and more generally, suggests exciting opportunities to strain-engineer nonlinear dynamical properties of ferroelectrics beyond the static and quasi-static limits.

Terahertz (THz) spin waves or their quanta, magnons, can be efficiently excited by acoustic phonons because these excitations have similar wavevectors in the THz regime. THz acoustic phonons can be produced using photoacoustic phenomena but typically have a low population and thus a relatively low displacement amplitude. The magnetization amplitude and population of the acoustically excited THz magnons are thus usually small. Using analytical calculations and dynamical phase-field simulations, we show that a freestanding metal/magnetic-insulator (MI)/dielectric multilayer can be designed to produce large-amplitude THz spin wave via cavity-enhanced magnon-phonon interaction. The amplitude of the acoustically excited THz spin wave in the freestanding multilayer is predicted to be more than ten times larger than in a substrate-supported multilayer. Acoustically excited nonlinear magnon-magnon interaction is demonstrated in the freestanding multilayer. The simulations also indicate that the magnon modes can be detected by probing the charge current in the metal layer generated via spin-charge conversion across the MI/metal interface and the resulting THz radiation. Applications of the freestanding multilayer in THz optoelectronic transduction are computationally demonstrated.

We theoretically investigate the steady-state transmission of continuous terahertz (THz) wave across a freestanding ferroelectric slab. Based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory of ferroelectrics and the coupled equations of motion for polarization and electromagnetic (EM) waves, we derive the analytical expressions of the frequency- and thickness-dependent dielectric susceptibility and transmission coefficient at the thin slab limit in the harmonic excitation regime. When the slab thickness is much smaller than the THz wavelength in the ferroelectric, the analytical predictions agree well with the numerical simulations from a dynamical phase-field model that incorporates the coupled dynamics of strain, polarization, and EM wave in multiphase systems. At larger thicknesses, the transmission is mainly determined by the frequency-dependent attenuation of THz waves in the ferroelectric and the formation of a standing polarization/THz wave. Our results advance the understanding of the interaction between THz wave and ferroelectrics and suggest the potential of exploiting ferroelectrics to achieve low-heat-dissipation, nonvolatile voltage modulation of THz transmission for high-data-rate wireless communication.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission searches for new exoplanets. The observing strategy of TESS results in high-precision photometry of millions of stars across the sky, allowing for detailed asteroseismic studies of individual systems. In this work, we present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of the giant star HD 76920 hosting a highly eccentric giant planet ($e = 0.878$) with an orbital period of 415 days, using 5 sectors of TESS light curve that cover around 140 days of data. Solar-like oscillations in HD 76920 are detected around $52 \, \mu$Hz by TESS for the first time. By utilizing asteroseismic modeling that takes classical observational parameters and stellar oscillation frequencies as constraints, we determine improved measurements of the stellar mass ($1.22 \pm 0.11\, M_\odot$), radius ($8.68 \pm 0.34\,R_\odot$), and age ($5.2 \pm 1.4\,$Gyr). With the updated parameters of the host star, we update the semi-major axis and mass of the planet as $a=1.165 \pm 0.035$ au and $M_{\rm p}\sin{i} = 3.57 \pm 0.22\,M_{\rm Jup}$. With an orbital pericenter of $0.142 \pm 0.005$ au, we confirm that the planet is currently far away enough from the star to experience negligible tidal decay until being engulfed in the stellar envelope. The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, we report that an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the N\'eel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 n$\Omega$ cm. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non-zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski-Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field.

We develop a polycrystal graph neural network (PGNN) model for predicting the effective properties of polycrystalline materials, using the Li7La3Zr2O12 ceramic as an example. A large-scale dataset with >5000 different three-dimensional polycrystalline microstructures of finite-width grain boundary is generated by Voronoi tessellation and processing of the electron backscatter diffraction images. The effective ion conductivities and elastic stiffness coefficients of these microstructures are calculated by high-throughput physics-based simulations. The optimized PGNN model achieves a low error of <1.4% in predicting all three diagonal components of the effective Li-ion conductivity matrix, outperforming a linear regression model and two baseline convolutional neural network models. Sequential forward selection method is used to quantify the relative importance of selecting individual grain (boundary) features to improving the property prediction accuracy, through which both the critical and unwanted node (edge) feature can be determined. The extrapolation performance of the trained PGNN model is also investigated. A magnon and a phonon are the quanta of spin wave and lattice wave, respectively, and they can hybridize into a magnon polaron when their frequencies and wavenumbers match close enough the values at the exceptional point. Guided by an analytically calculated magnon polaron dispersion, dynamical phase-field simulations are performed to investigate the effects of magnon polaron formation on the attenuation of a bulk acoustic wave in a magnetic insulator film. It is shown that a stronger magnon-phonon coupling leads to a larger attenuation. The simulations also demonstrate the existence of a minimum magnon-phonon interaction time required for the magnon polaron formation, which is found to decrease with the magnetoelastic coupling coefficient but increase with the magnetic damping coefficient. These results deepen the understanding of the mechanisms of acoustic attenuation in magnetic crystals and provide insights into the design of new-concept spin interconnects that operate based on acoustically driven magnon propagation., Comment: 5 figures

We investigate the role of polarization-photon coupling (specifically, polarization-oscillation-induced radiation electric field) in the excitation of ferroelectric thin films by an ultrafast terahertz (THz) electric-field pulse. Analytical theory is developed to predict how the frequencies and relaxation time of three-dimensional soft mode phonons (intrinsic polarization oscillation) are modulated by radiation electric field and epitaxial strain. Ultrafast THz-pulse-driven excitation of harmonic polarization oscillation in strained single-domain ferroelectric thin film is then simulated using a dynamical phase-field model that considers the coupled strain-polarization-photon dynamics. The frequencies and relaxational time extracted from such numerical simulations agree well with analytical predictions. In relatively thin films, it is predicted that the radiation electric field slightly reduces the frequencies but significantly shortens the relaxational time. These results demonstrate the necessity of considering polarization-photon coupling in understanding and predicting the response of ferroelectric materials to ultrafast pulses of THz and higher frequencies., Comment: 3 figures

The coexistence of different ferroelectric phases enables the tunability of the macroscopic properties and extensive applications from piezoelectric transducers to nonvolatile memories. Here we develop a thermodynamic model to predict the stability and low-energy orientations of boundaries between different phases in ferroelectrics. Taking lead zirconate titanate and bismuth ferrite as two examples, we demonstrate that the low-energy orientations of interphase boundaries are largely determined by minimizing the electrostatic and elastic energies. Phase-field simulations are employed to analyze the competition between the interfacial energy and the electrostatic and elastic energies. Our simulation results demonstrate that the lowering of crystal symmetry could occur due to the electrical and mechanical incompatibilities between the two phases, which can be used to explain the experimentally observed low-symmetry phases near morphotropic phase boundaries. Our work provides theoretical foundations for understanding and controlling the interphase boundaries in ferroelectric materials for multifunctional applications.

Excitation of coherent high-frequency magnons (quanta of spin waves) is critical to the development of high-speed magnonic devices. Here we computationally demonstrate the excitation of coherent sub-terahertz (THz) magnons in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) thin films by a photoinduced picosecond acoustic pulse. Analytical calculations are also performed to reveal the magnon excitation mechanism. Through spin pumping and spin-charge conversion, these magnons can inject sub-THz charge current into an adjacent heavy-metal film which in turn emits electromagnetic (EM) waves. Using a dynamical phase-field model that considers the coupled dynamics of acoustic waves, spin waves, and EM waves, we show that the emitted EM wave retains the spectral information of all the sub-THz magnon modes and has a sufficiently large amplitude for near-field detection. These predictions indicate that the excitation and detection of sub-THz magnons can be realized in rationally designed FM or AFM thin-film heterostructures via ultrafast optical-pump THz-emission-probe spectroscopy., Comment: 6 figures

We present an analysis of the first 20-second cadence light curves obtained by the TESS space telescope during its extended mission. We find a precision improvement of 20-second data compared to 2-minute data for bright stars when binned to the same cadence (~10-25% better for T<~8 mag, reaching equal precision at T~13 mag), consistent with pre-flight expectations based on differences in cosmic ray mitigation algorithms. We present two results enabled by this improvement. First, we use 20-second data to detect oscillations in three solar analogs (gamma Pav, zeta Tuc and pi Men) and use asteroseismology to measure their radii, masses, densities and ages to ~1%, ~3%, ~1% and ~20% respectively, including systematic errors. Combining our asteroseismic ages with chromospheric activity measurements we find evidence that the spread in the activity-age relation is linked to stellar mass and thus convection-zone depth. Second, we combine 20-second data and published radial velocities to re-characterize pi Men c, which is now the closest transiting exoplanet for which detailed asteroseismology of the host star is possible. We show that pi Men c is located at the upper edge of the planet radius valley for its orbital period, confirming that it has likely retained a volatile atmosphere and that the "asteroseismic radius valley" remains devoid of planets. Our analysis favors a low eccentricity for pi Men c (<0.1 at 68% confidence), suggesting efficient tidal dissipation (Q/k <~ 2400) if it formed via high-eccentricity migration. Asteroseismology of bright stars has become increasingly important as a method to determine fundamental properties (in particular ages) of stars. The Kepler Space Telescope initiated a revolution by detecting oscillations in more than 500 main-sequence and subgiant stars. However, most Kepler stars are faint, and therefore have limited constraints from independent methods such as long-baseline interferometry. Here, we present the discovery of solar-like oscillations in $\alpha$ Men A, a naked-eye (V=5.1) G7 dwarf in TESS's Southern Continuous Viewing Zone. Using a combination of astrometry, spectroscopy, and asteroseismology, we precisely characterize the solar analog alpha Men A (Teff = 5569 +/- 62 K, R = 0.960 +/- 0.016 Rsun, M = 0.964 +/- 0.045 Msun). To characterize the fully convective M dwarf companion, we derive empirical relations to estimate mass, radius, and temperature given the absolute Gaia magnitude and metallicity, yielding M = 0.169 +/- 0.006, R = 0.19 +/- 0.01 and Teff = 3054 +/- 44 K. Our asteroseismic age of 6.2 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 0.6 (sys) Gyr for the primary places $\alpha$ Men B within a small population of M dwarfs with precisely measured ages. We combined multiple ground-based spectroscopy surveys to reveal an activity cycle of 13.1 +/- 1.1 years, a period similar to that observed in the Sun. We used different gyrochronology models with the asteroseismic age to estimate a rotation period of ~30 days for the primary. Various machine learning models have been used to predict the properties of polycrystalline materials, but none of them directly consider the physical interactions among neighboring grains despite such microscopic interactions critically determining macroscopic material properties. Here, we develop a graph neural network (GNN) model for obtaining an embedding of polycrystalline microstructure which incorporates not only the physical features of individual grains but also their interactions. The embedding is then linked to the target property using a feed-forward neural network. Using the magnetostriction of polycrystalline Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2 alloys as an example, we show that a single GNN model with fixed network architecture and hyperparameters allows for a low prediction error of ~10% over a group of remarkably different microstructures as well as quantifying the importance of each feature in each grain of a microstructure to its magnetostriction. Such microstructure-graph-based GNN model therefore enables an accurate and interpretable prediction of the properties of polycrystalline materials., Comment: 28 pages, 6 figures

Narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation is crucial for high-resolution spectral identification, but a narrowband THz source driven by femtosecond (fs) laser has remained scarce. Here, it is computationally predicted that a metal/dielectric/magnetoelastic heterostructure enables converting a fs laser pulse into a multi-cycle THz pulse with a narrow linewidth down to ~1.5 GHz, which is in contrast with the single-cycle, broadband THz pulse from the existing fs-laser-excited emitters. It is shown that such narrowband THz pulse originates from the excitation and long-distance transport of THz spin waves in the magnetoelastic film, which can be enabled by a short strain pulse obtained from fs laser irradiation of the metal film when the thicknesses of the metal and magnetoelastic films both fall into a specific range. These results therefore reveal an approach to achieving optical generation of narrowband THz pulse based on heterostructure design, which also has implications in the design of THz magnonic devices., Comment: 5 figures

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is an all-sky survey mission aiming to search for exoplanets that transit bright stars. The high-quality photometric data of TESS are excellent for the asteroseismic study of solar-like stars. In this work, we present an asteroseismic analysis of the red-giant star HD~222076 hosting a long-period (2.4 yr) giant planet discovered through radial velocities. Solar-like oscillations of HD~222076 are detected around $203 \, \mu$Hz by TESS for the first time. Asteroseismic modeling, using global asteroseismic parameters as input, yields a determination of the stellar mass ($M_\star = 1.12 \pm 0.12\, M_\odot$), radius ($R_\star = 4.34 \pm 0.21\,R_\odot$), and age ($7.4 \pm 2.7\,$Gyr), with precisions greatly improved from previous studies. The period spacing of the dipolar mixed modes extracted from the observed power spectrum reveals that the star is on the red-giant branch burning hydrogen in a shell surrounding the core. We find that the planet will not escape the tidal pull of the star and be engulfed into it within about $800\,$Myr, before the tip of the red-giant branch is reached., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

We present the discovery of TOI-197.01, the first transiting planet identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for which asteroseismology of the host star is possible. TOI-197 (HIP116158) is a bright (V=8.2 mag), spectroscopically classified subgiant which oscillates with an average frequency of about 430 muHz and displays a clear signature of mixed modes. The oscillation amplitude confirms that the redder TESS bandpass compared to Kepler has a small effect on the oscillations, supporting the expected yield of thousands of solar-like oscillators with TESS 2-minute cadence observations. Asteroseismic modeling yields a robust determination of the host star radius (2.943+/-0.064 Rsun), mass (1.212 +/- 0.074 Msun) and age (4.9+/-1.1 Gyr), and demonstrates that it has just started ascending the red-giant branch. Combining asteroseismology with transit modeling and radial-velocity observations, we show that the planet is a "hot Saturn" (9.17+/-0.33 Rearth) with an orbital period of ~14.3 days, irradiance of 343+/-24 Fearth, moderate mass (60.5 +/- 5.7 Mearth) and density (0.431+/-0.062 gcc). The properties of TOI-197.01 show that the host-star metallicity - planet mass correlation found in sub-Saturns (4-8 Rearth) does not extend to larger radii, indicating that planets in the transition between sub-Saturns and Jupiters follow a relatively narrow range of densities. With a density measured to ~15%, TOI-197.01 is one of the best characterized Saturn-sized planets to date, augmenting the small number of known transiting planets around evolved stars and demonstrating the power of TESS to characterize exoplanets and their host stars using asteroseismology., Comment: 12 pages (excluding author list and references), 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in AJ.
