41. Assessing the potential of biochar derived from sewage sludge for photoelectrode fabrication: methods, mechanisms, and conclusions.

Abstract

Previous studies often utilized metal catalysts in the preparation of photoelectrodes. However, this research marks the first instance of utilizing biochar as a catalyst in such a preparation. The biochar catalytic layer was synthesized by loading sewage sludge-derived biochar onto nickel foam using the sol–gel method. The performance of the photoelectrode was evaluated using tetracycline (TC) as a probe. The photoelectrode BCPE-800, prepared using biochar derived at 800 °C, achieved 98.52% TC degradation within 60 min, with a reaction rate constant of 0.0635 min−1. It also exhibited excellent stability and recyclability, maintaining 90% removal efficiency after six cycles. Quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy showed that h+ acted as the primary active species, while ˙OH and 1O2 also contributed to the TC degradation. Based on the intermediates identified by LC-MS, the study proposed two degradation pathways. The research effectively recycled sewage sludge and offered cost-effective possibilities for photoelectrocatalytic technology, highlighting its practical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The in situself-assembling of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to construct thin-film electrodes is a major challenge in designing efficient photoelectric catalysts. In this study, we propose a method for preparing MOF derivative and TiO2nanotube (TNT) coupled catalysts with S-scheme Ar–ZrO2/Ti2O3-TNTs, where Ar–ZrO2derived from NH2-UiO-66 was modified in situinside Ti2O3-TNTs. The TiO2nanotubes not only played an important role in substrate loading and support but also served as the source of Ti3+for the self-modifying. Such a photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) system exhibited more than 95% degradation for the treatment of tetracycline wastewater with excellent photoelectric synergy by visible light (λ> 420 nm) and auxiliary circuitry owing to its excellent electrical conductivity, S-type heterogeneous structure, better photogenerated e−/h+separation, and fast photocarrier transfer. Even in complicated water conditions, the photoelectrode generated 1O2, O2−, and h+were shown to be the most significant active species for directly promoting the PEC oxidation of tetracycline. This research enriches the knowledge on the development and modification of materials using MOF derivatives to generate photoelectric anodes for treating antibiotics wastewater.
