2. Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System to Enhance Oral Bioavailability of Berberine Hydrochloride in Rats.

Abstract

Berberine hydrochloride (BH) is a versatile bioactive compound derived from the plants of the Berberis genus, known for its various pharmacological effects. However, its oral bioavailability is low due to its high hydrophilicity and limited permeability. To enhance its clinical efficacy and oral bioavailability, this study designed and prepared a BH-loaded self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (BH-SMEDDS), and characterized its in vitro and in vivo properties. Firstly, the optimal formulation of BH-SMEDDS was selected using solubility evaluations, pseudo-ternary phase diagrams, and particle size analysis. The formulation containing 55% Capmul MCM, 22.5% Kolliphor RH 40, and 22.5% 1,2-propanediol was developed. BH-SMEDDS exhibited stable physicochemical properties, with an average particle size of 47.2 ± 0.10 nm and a self-emulsification time of 26.02 ± 0.24 s. Moreover, in vitro dissolution studies showed significant improvements in BH release in simulated intestinal fluid, achieving 93.1 ± 2.3% release within 300 min. Meanwhile, BH-SMEDDS did not exhibit cytotoxic effects on the Caco-2 cells. Additionally, BH-SMEDDS achieved a 1.63-fold increase in oral bioavailability compared to commercial BH tablets. Therefore, SMEDDS presents a promising strategy for delivering BH with enhanced oral bioavailability, demonstrating significant potential for clinical application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite high global vaccination coverage, Newcastle disease (ND) remains a constant threat to poultry producers owing to low antibody levels. Given the respiratory mucosa is the important site for Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccination, enhancing respiratory mucosal immunity may help control ND. Our previous study showed that mulberry leaf polysaccharide (MLP) is very promising in delivering a robust balanced immune response, but the effects of it on respiratory immunity in chicks are unknown. In this study, we evaluated the potential of MLP to activate respiratory mucosal immunity and revealed the possible mechanism of MLP as an immunopotentiator for ND vaccines. Chicks were randomly divided into 5 groups: blank control, vaccination control (VC), and low-, middle-, and high-dose MLP (MLP-L, MLP-M, and MLP-H) (n = 30). The serum results of humoral and cell-mediated immune responses showed significant increases in NDV hemagglutination inhibition antibody titer, IgG and IgA antibody levels, and the T-lymphocyte population in the MLP-M group compared with the VC group. Validation of results also indicated remarkable increases in tracheal antibody-mediated immunity and a mucosal immune response in the MLP-M group. Furthermore, the upregulation of TLR7 revealed a possible mechanism. Our findings provided evidence to consider MLP as a potential mucosal vaccine adjuvant candidate against ND in chickens.

13. Electrochemical properties of Ti/Sb/SnO2-SiO2anode for electrocatalytic oxidation of Acid Red 18

Abstract

In this paper, Ti/Sb/SnO2-SiO2electrodes were prepared by adding SiO2nanoparticles with high thermal stability as barrier substance on the Ti/Sb/SnO2electrodes, and the electrocatalytic performance of the Ti/Sb/SnO2-SiO2electrode and degradation effect on Acid Red 18 (AR 18) was examined. The results showed that coating with SiO2nanoparticles had better compactness and smaller crystal grains than that without SiO2, because the addition of SiO2nanoparticles hindered the growth of SnO2grains. The addition of SiO2nanoparticles also increased the oxygen vacancies in the coating, raising the active oxygen content, which can improve the generation capacity of •OH. Compared with Ti/Sb/SnO2electrode, the Ti/Sb/SnO2-SiO2electrode had a larger specific surface area and oxygen evolution overpotential, which can inhibit the occurrence of side reactions of oxygen evolution, improving the degradation efficiency of AR 18. The degradation process conformed to first-order kinetics. Meanwhile, the degradation intermediate product was inferred according to the results of the three-dimensional fluorescence test. In addition, the addition of SiO2nanoparticles improved current efficiency and reduced energy consumption, significantly strengthening electrode stability.

14. Promotion of conductive carbon black loaded CuFe2O4on the oxidative degradation of phenol by persulfate

Abstract

The development of cheap and efficient catalysts for persulfate activation in advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate is important and promising in the wastewater treatment field. Herein, conductive carbon black loaded CuFe2O4(CCB-CuFe2O4) had been prepared via a sol-gel method and was used as a catalyst to activate persulfate for the removal of phenol in water. The CCB-CuFe2O4was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed that CuFe2O4nucleated on the defect of CCB. The performance of the activation on persulfate was studied by determining the concentration of phenol and chemical oxygen demand of the water. The activity of the catalyst is the highest when the content of CuFe2O4in the catalyst is 10%. The removal rate of 100 mg/L phenol reached 100% in 30 min under the optimized operation condition, which was 2.0 g/L CCB-CuFe2O4, 2.0 mmol/L persulfate (PS) and pH = 11. The factors of effect on the catalysis performance were discussed. CCB-CuFe2O4can be used in the pH range of 3~11 and the presence of HCO3–can promote phenol degradation rate. The use of CCB-CuFe2O4catalyst obviously reduced the dose of PS in the process of phenol oxidation degradation. Furtherly, quenching experiments verified that the most important reactive species in the CCB-CuFe2O4/PS/phenol system is singlet oxygen (1O2).

Abstract

The generation of high-performance keys is critical to security in a secrecy system. In view of the deficiency of the key-generating method in existence, this paper puts forward a new method for generating keys that can integrate the randomness of the semiconductor source, the unpredictability of chaos and the good statistical characteristics of pseudorandom series. The results indicate that the performance of the keys is ideal.
