Abstract This study aims to investigate the effects of the Galectin‐3 (Gal‐3) inhibitor TD139 on inflammation and the extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK)/c‐Jun N‐terminal kinase (JNK)/p38 pathway in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Human placental tissues were treated with TD139 and TNF‐α, assessing Gal‐3, ERK/JNK/p38 activation, and inflammatory cytokines. GDM was induced in mice via subcutaneous injections of streptozotocin (STZ). After confirming GDM, mice were treated with 15 mg/kg TD139 on GD 10.5 12.5, 14.5, 16.5, and 18.5. Serum inflammatory cytokines were measured on GD 20.5, and post‐delivery placental tissues were analyzed. Data were analyzed using one‐way or two‐way repeated measures ANOVA with post hoc tests. TD139 suppressed TNF‐α‐induced increases in Gal‐3, IL‐1β, IL‐6, MCP‐1, and ERK/JNK/p38 activation in placental tissues. In STZ‐induced GDM mice, TD139 reduced glucose levels, weight loss, and food and water intake. TD139 significantly lowered TNF‐α, IL‐1β, IL‐6, and MCP‐1 in serum and placental tissues and inhibited the ERK/JNK/p38 pathway. TD139 improved pup numbers in GDM mice compared to untreated ones. TD139 reduces inflammation and inhibits the ERK/JNK/p38 pathway in TNF‐α stimulated placental tissues and STZ‐induced GDM mice, suggesting its therapeutic potential for managing GDM‐related placental inflammation and improving pregnancy outcomes. The study used TNF‐α to mimic GDM in placental tissues and an STZ‐induced GDM mouse model, which may not fully represent human GDM complexity. Future research should explore alternative models, and broader signaling pathways, and thoroughly evaluate TD139's safety in pregnancy.

Abstract To enhance the anesthetic efficacy and reduce toxic side effects, a strategy is proposed involving the utilization of general anesthetics of Propofol (Pro) and Etomidate (Eto) to synergistic inhibition GABA receptors simultaneously. Four‐in‐one molecular aggregates were prepared to implement this strategy, which comprised of Pro and Eto with the bridging molecule monoglyceride monooleate (GMO) and surfactant F127 through intermolecular forces. The blood‐brain barrier (BBB) targeted lactoferrin (LF) is affixed to their surface, obtaining the final molecular aggregates. By employing lactoferrin enrich aggregates to the BBB, followed by ultrasound combine microbubbles to open the BBB, a remarkable 4.5‐fold enhancement in brain drug delivery was achieved. The molecular aggregates group maintained stable parameters of heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. A notable increase of more than twice therapeutic index (TI) value was observed, implying their higher anesthesia efficiency and reduced toxicity. Electroencephalogram (EEG) experiments demonstrate a significant elevation in the proportion of δ waves from 28% to 80% for aggregates, accompanied by a nearly fivefold reduction in the proportion of θ waves, meaning a significant improvement in synergistic anesthesia effectiveness (interaction index 0.289) with lower drug dosage. Furthermore, mouse immunofluorescence brain slice experiments suggest Pro and Eto enter the GABA receptor simultaneously, resulting in synergistic inhibition of GABA receptors.

Summary: Correlated variability in the visual cortex is modulated by stimulus properties. The stimulus dependence of correlated variability impacts stimulus coding and is indicative of circuit structure. An affine model combining a multiplicative factor and an additive offset has been proposed to explain how correlated variability in primary visual cortex (V1) depends on stimulus orientations. However, whether the affine model could be extended to explain modulations by other stimulus variables or variability shared between two brain areas is unknown. Motivated by a simple neural circuit mechanism, we modified the affine model to better explain the contrast dependence of neural variability shared within either primary or secondary visual cortex (V1 or V2) as well as the orientation dependence of neural variability shared between V1 and V2. Our results bridge neural circuit mechanisms and statistical models and provide a parsimonious explanation for the stimulus dependence of correlated variability within and between visual areas.

Our study comparative analyzed the morphological and physiological performance of Juglans regia L. cv. 'Xiangling' (JRX) grafted onto five rootstock species originated from China. A wide range of coefficient of variation (CV), 1.155-39.848%, was detected for fourteen indexes among the studied seedlings. CV of plant height, total dry biomass, total leaf area, root/shoot ratio, chlorophyll index, and stomatal conductance was higher than 15.00%, suggesting higher variation. Principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis and subordinate function analysis were used to screen engrafted seedlings for their quality. All three methods produced the same result that seedling quality of 'Xiangling' engrafted with the five rootstock species from high to low were - Juglans regia L. cv. 'Jizhaomian' (JRJ), JRX, Juglans regia L. cv. 'Lvxiang' (JRL), Juglans mandshurica, Maxim., and Juglans hopeiensis Hu.. The evaluation results were highly consistent with the actual growth performance of the engrafted seedlings, it verified the reliability of our results and the evaluation methods. The results demonstrated that JRJ, JRX, and JRL are potential rootstock candidates in the studied walnut planting regions. It would provide important implication for the selection of proper rootstock species for a certain particular walnut variety.

Abstract Background RP11-296E3.2 is a novel long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) metastasis, that was reported in our previous clinical studies. However, the mechanisms of RP11-296E3.2 in colorectal tumorigenesis remain elusive. Methods RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), Transwell assays and others, were performed to evaluate the function of RP11-296E3.2 for proliferation and metastasis in vitro. In situ and metastatic tumor models were performed to evaluate the function of RP11-296E3.2 for proliferation and metastasis in vivo. RNA-pulldown, RNA-interacting protein immunoprecipitation (RIP), tissue microarray (TMA) assay, a luciferase reporter assay, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and others were performed to explore the mechanisms by which RP11-296E3.2 regulates CRC tumorigenesis. Results RP11-296E3.2 was confirmed to be associated with CRC cell proliferation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, RP11-296E3.2 directly bound to recombinant Y-Box Binding Protein 1 (YBX1) and enhanced signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) transcription and phosphorylation. YBX1 promoted the CRC cell proliferation and migration, while knockdown of RP11-296E3.2 attenuated the effects of YBX1 on CRC cell proliferation, and metastasis and the expression of several related downstream genes. We are the first to discover and confirm the existence of the YBX1/STAT3 pathway, a pathway dependent on RP11-296E3.2. Conclusion Together, these novel findings show that the RP11-296E3.2/YBX1 pathway promotes colorectal tumorigenesis and progression by activating STAT3 transcription and phosphorylation, and suggest that RP11-296E3.2 is a potential diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target in CRC.

In this work, the metal (Zn, Co) and non-metal (N) co doped carbon quantum dots (Zn/Co-NCDs) was prepared by hydrothermal method, and characterized by FT-IR, TEM and XPS. It was found that bimetal doped could effectively improve the quantum yield (QY) of carbon quantum dots. The presence of Fe(III) could ''turn off'' the fluorescence signal, and the addition of ascorbic acid (AA) could ''turn on'' the fluorescence signal. An ''on-off-on'' fluorescent probe based on Zn/ Co-NCDs for Fe(III) and AA analysis was established. The liner ranges were 0.03–20.00 μg/mL and 0.69–20.00 μg/mL with the LODs of 0.010 μg/mL and 0.23 μg/mL, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract In this study, we highlight some important factors in the specimen preparation methods for evaluating photovoltaic backsheet properties after accelerated aging. Two different sequences are considered: Method (I) cut‐then‐age: cut into 1‐cm wide strips and then expose to stress, and Method (II) age‐then‐cut: expose a larger sheet to stress and then cut into 1‐cm widths for mechanical property measurements. We also compare the effect of three cutting methods, (a) tensile specimen punch, (b) paper cutter, and (c) fresh razor blade. Several commercial backsheets were evaluated, with stress exposures including (a) pressure cooker test (PCT), (b) dry ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, and (c) UV combined damp heat tests. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and intrinsic viscosity (IV) were used to analyze the materials on unstressed materials and samples exposed to PCT. The results show that both the cutting method and the time of cutting have an impact on the backsheet mechanical properties. Under UV exposure, Method II, age‐then‐cut, generally resulted in a higher average value, with more variation than Method I; however, if the side strips from Method II were excluded, the variation dropped to the same level. This is because the specimens at the sides of the sheet get additional damage from UV light from the exposed sides of the sample. In contrast to UV exposure, PCT specimens prepared by Method II result in lower average values and higher variability. This is attributed to embrittlement through the bulk of the sample where the cutting of embrittled specimens appears to result in more edge defects which can then initiate a break at smaller strains. The data suggest that for UV exposures, the specimens should be cut after aging and the exposed side specimens discarded, and that for PCT exposures, the specimens should be cut before the exposure.

Abstract Background The evolution of spliceosomal introns has been widely studied among various eukaryotic groups. Researchers nearly reached the consensuses on the pattern and the mechanisms of intron losses and gains across eukaryotes. However, according to previous studies that analyzed a few genes or genomes, Nematoda seems to be an eccentric group. Results Taking advantage of the recent accumulation of sequenced genomes, we extensively analyzed the intron losses and gains using 104 nematode genomes across all the five Clades of the phylum. Nematodes have a wide range of intron density, from less than one to more than nine per kbp coding sequence. The rates of intron losses and gains exhibit significant heterogeneity both across different nematode lineages and across different evolutionary stages of the same lineage. The frequency of intron losses far exceeds that of intron gains. Five pieces of evidence supporting the model of cDNA-mediated intron loss have been observed in ten Caenorhabditis species, the dominance of the precise intron losses, frequent loss of adjacent introns, high-level expression of the intron-lost genes, preferential losses of short introns, and the preferential losses of introns close to 3′-ends of genes. Like studies in most eukaryotic groups, we cannot find the source sequences for the limited number of intron gains detected in the Caenorhabditis genomes. Conclusions These results indicate that nematodes are a typical eukaryotic group rather than an outlier in intron evolution.

Summary: Pancreatic progenitor cell differentiation and proliferation factor (PPDPF) has been reported to play a role in tumorigenesis. However, its function in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains poorly understood. In this study, we report that PPDPF is significantly downregulated in HCC and the decreased PPDPF expression indicates poor prognosis. In the dimethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced HCC mouse model, hepatocyte-specific depletion of Ppdpf promotes hepatocarcinogenesis, and reintroduction of PPDPF into liver-specific Ppdpf knockout (LKO) mice inhibits the accelerated HCC development. Mechanistic study shows that PPDPF regulates nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling through modulation of RIPK1 ubiquitination. PPDPF interacts with RIPK1 and facilitates K63-linked ubiquitination of RIPK1 via recruiting the E3 ligase TRIM21, which catalyzes K63-linked ubiquitination of RIPK1 at K140. In addition, liver-specific overexpression of PPDPF activates NF-κB signaling and attenuates apoptosis and compensatory proliferation in mice, which significantly suppresses HCC development. This work identifies PPDPF as a regulator of NF-κB signaling and provides a potential therapeutic candidate for HCC.

Early, efficient and sensitive detection of serum markers in cervical cancer is very important for the treatment and prognosis to cervical cancer patients. In this paper, a SERS platform based on surface enhanced Raman scattering technology was proposed to quantitatively detect superoxide dismutase in serum of cervical cancer patients. Au-Ag nanoboxs array was made by oil-water interface self-assembly method as the trapping substrate. The single-layer Au-AgNBs array was verified by SERS for possessing excellent uniformity, selectivity and reproducibility. 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) was used as Raman signal molecule, it will be oxidized to dithiol azobenzene under the surface catalytic reaction with the condition of PH = 9 and laser irradiation. The quantitative detection of SOD could be achieved by calculating the change of characteristic peak ratio. When the concentration was from 10 U mL−1–160 U mL−1, the concentration of SOD could be accurately and quantitatively detected in human serum. The whole test was completed within 20 min and the limit of quantitation was 10 U mL−1. In addition, serum samples from the cervical cancer, the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and healthy people were tested by the platform and the results were consistent with those of ELISA. The platform has great potential as a tool for early clinical screening of cervical cancer in the future.

In order to address issues such as low demodulation accuracy, large demodulation errors, small dynamic range, and complex algorithms for the extrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometric (EFPI) sensor, a five-step phase-shift algorithm based on a multiwavelength (MW)-averaging method is proposed to improve demodulation speed, noise stability, dynamic range, and noise suppression. The proposed demodulation method utilizes white-light interferometry (WLI) technology to acquire the reflection spectra and extract the five-step phase-shift signals at Ns consecutive operating points. The demodulation results of Ns sets of five-step phase-shift signals are averaged to obtain the average demodulated phase and cavity length variation. Theoretical analysis demonstrates the significant effects of the MW demodulation method on demodulation parameter errors and noise suppression. Particularly, when the demodulation parameter θ = π/2 rad, the method exhibits excellent stability against demodulation parameter error-induced instability. Moreover, it greatly improves noise suppression and reduces noise fluctuations. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed demodulation method. Compared with the traditional single-wavelength (SW) five-step phase-shifting demodulation method, the MW demodulation method exhibits stronger noise- and harmonic-suppression capabilities as the number of averaging wavelengths Ns increases. The harmonic distortion of the MW demodulation method with Ns = 128 is 20 dB lower than that of the SW demodulation method, and the noise is 15 dB lower. Furthermore, the proposed method effectively suppresses the influence of demodulation parameter errors on signal demodulation. This proposed demodulation method has the potential for fast real-time dynamic demodulation. It has great significance and application in the field of weak signal detection in fiber-optic sensors with interferometer structures and has enormous advantages in noise-suppression in complex environments.

Background & Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly heterogeneous solid tumor with high morbidity and mortality. AT-rich interaction domain 1A (ARID1A) accounts for up to 10% of mutations in liver cancer, however, its role in HCC remains controversial, and no targeted therapy has been established. Methods: The expression of ARID1A in clinical samples was examined by Western blot and immunohistochemical staining. ARID1A was knocked out by Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) in HCC cell lines, and the effects of glucose deprivation on cell viability, proliferation, and apoptosis were measured. Mass spectrometry analysis was used to find ARID1A-interacting proteins, and the result was verified by co-immunoprecipitation and Glutathione S Transferase (GST) pull-down. The regulation of ARID1A target gene USP9X was investigated by chromatin immunoprecipitation, Glutathione S Transferase (GST) pull-down, luciferase reporter assay, and so forth. Finally, drug treatments were performed to explore the therapeutic potential of the agents targeting ARID1A-deficient HCC in vitro and in vivo. Results: Our study has shown that ARID1A loss protected cells from glucose deprivation–induced cell death. A mechanism study disclosed that AIRD1A recruited histone deacetylase 1 via its C-terminal region DUF3518 to the promoter of USP9X, resulting in down-regulation of USP9X and its target protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit α2 (PRKAA2). ARID1A knockout and a 1989∗ truncation mutant in HCC abolished this effect, increased the levels of H3K9 and H3K27 acetylation at the USP9X promoter, and up-regulated the expression of USP9X and protein kinase AMP-activated catalytic subunit α2 (PRKAA2), which mediated the adaptation of tumor cells to glucose starvation. Compound C dramatically inhibited the growth of ARID1A-deficient tumors and prolongs the survival of tumor-bearing mice. Conclusions: HCC patients with ARID1A mutation may benefit from synthetic lethal therapy targeting the ubiquitin-specific peptidase 9 X-linked (USP9X)–adenosine 5‘-monophosphate–activated protein kinase (AMPK) axis.

Conspiracy theorists’ unpopular opinions likely make them more apprehensive about interactions with others, frustrating their need to belong. Therefore, they may be susceptible to believing misinformation because evidence that others share their beliefs provides “social proof” that they can expect interactions with others to be positive and rewarding. The present research examined whether alternatively fulfilling the need for social connection through romantic relationships could protect conspiracy theorists against COVID-19 misinformation. In a 3-week daily diary study (N = 555), experimental participants implicitly learned to associate their romantic partners with positive experiences (by repeatedly pairing their partner with highly positive and approachable stimuli, McNulty et al., 2017). We then assessed how much participants trusted individuals they might normally distrust, as a manipulation check, and how much participants tuned their daily personal beliefs and behavior to match the U.S. public's daily susceptibility to COVID-19 misinformation. Participants high on conspiratorial thinking trusted fellow community members more in the experimental than control condition. Participants high on conspiratorial thinking in the experimental condition were also less likely to treat the U.S. public's greater daily susceptibility to COVID-19 misinformation as proof that they could discount the virus. The present findings suggest that rewarding romantic connections might be leveraged to limit conspiracy theorists’ susceptibility to believing public skepticism about COVID-19.

The existence of cavities behind the segments is one of the common disease phenomena in shield tunnels. The cavities not only affect the static mechanics behavior of soil and segment, but also directly affect the dynamic response of the tunnel, which could aggravate the tunnel’s seismic damage. The existing related researches all use the deterministic analysis methods and lack the quantitative evaluation method in terms of probability perspective. Taking a shield tunnel in a rail transit section as an example, considering factors such as the location and size of the cavity, site conditions, and the incident direction of seismic wave, a large number of nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses are conducted based on the soil-tunnel-void interaction using an increment dynamic analysis method. Combined with the theory of tunnel seismic vulnerability, the seismic vulnerability is studied for the shield tunnel with the cavity disease. It is found that: the size of the cavity, the site conditions and the incidence direction of seismic wave have an important influence on the tunnel seismic vulnerability. As the cavity size increases, the plastic deformation of the soil adjacent to the cavity increases substantially, the eccentricity extent of the segment section increases, and the load-bearing performance decreases, and the affected area is about 3?5 times the cavity size. The cavity behind the segment increases the vulnerability of the tunnel structure. The increase of vulnerability is more obvious with the void size increasing. The impact of the cavity on the structure vulnerability varies with different locations of the cavity. When the cavity size is relatively large, the impact extent shows the following trend with a descending order: the side wall, shoulder, and crown cavity. As site condition worsens, the tunnel vulnerability increases and the influence of the void on tunnel vulnerability also enhance. Under the transverse and vertical incident directions of seismic ground motions, the tunnel vulnerability increases nonlinearly with the increasing of the cavity size. Although the damage probability under vertical ground motion is less than that of transverse ground motion, the increasing extent is significantly larger and more sensitive to the cavity size. It is worth to noting that for the three cavity locations and the two incident directions of ground motion, the larger cavity size may significantly affect the seismic performance of the tunnel structure.

Here the authors show that individual neural responses in mouse V1 to a repeated natural movie clip consist of episodic activity which is unstable in gain across weeks. Despite of the gain variability, time in the natural movie is stably represented by population activity in V1.

ObjectivesIn order to suppress the longitudinal vibration transfer of ship shafting, this paper put forward a design approach of applying disc-spring longitudinal shock absorber to the ship shafting, and carried out a study of dynamic characteristics before and after applying this type of longitudinal shock absorber. MethodsFirst, the static stiffness of shock absorber was studied by theoretical analysis and experimental test. Secondly, the influence of static load, excitation frequency, disc spring combination and other factors on the dynamic stiffness of shock absorber was investigated by experimental test. Finally, the optimized scheme of disc-spring shock absorber was applied to ship shafting to study the effect of vibration reduction. Results The results show that the selected four-piece dual disc-spring shock absorber has a low ratio of dynamic stiffness to static stiffness, and its dynamic stiffness is not sensitive to the variation of static load, system excitation frequency and other factors. The application of shock absorber has obvious effect on longitudinal vibration control of shafting. Conclusions The research results have reference value for the engineering application of ship shafting disc-spring longitudinal shock absorber.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a prevalent chronic liver disease, however, drugs to treat this disease are still lacking. Here, the authors show that PPDPF inhibits the development of hepatic steatosis by negatively regulating mTORC1-S6K-SREBP1 signaling, which provides a potential therapeutic candidate for NAFLD treatment.

Direct absorption of sunlight and conversion into heat by uniformly dispersed photothermal nanofluids has emerged as a facile way to efficiently harness abundant renewable solar-thermal energy for a variety of heating-related applications. As the key component of the direct absorption solar collectors, solar-thermal nanofluids, however, generally suffer from poor dispersion and tend to aggregate, and the aggregation and precipitation tendency becomes even stronger at elevated temperatures. In this review, we overview recent research efforts and progresses in preparing solar-thermal nanofluids that can be stably and homogeneously dispersed under medium temperatures. We provide detailed description on the dispersion challenges and the governing dispersion mechanisms, and introduce representative dispersion strategies that are applicable to ethylene glycol, oil, ionic liquid, and molten salt-based medium-temperature solar-thermal nanofluids. The applicability and advantages of four categories of stabilization strategies including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic stabilization, steric stabilization, and self-dispersion stabilization in improving the dispersion stability of different type of thermal storage fluids are discussed. Among them, recently emerged self-dispersible nanofluids hold the potential for practical medium-temperature direct absorption solar-thermal energy harvesting. In the end, the exciting research opportunities, on-going research need and possible future research directions are also discussed. It is anticipated that the overview of recent progress in improving dispersion stability of medium-temperature solar-thermal nanofluids can not only stimulate exploration of direct absorption solar-thermal energy harvesting applications, but also provide a promising means to solve the fundamental limiting issue for general nanofluid technologies.

Abstract Background A full spectrum of video capsule endoscopy (VCE) adverse events over the past two decades has not been evaluated. We aimed to determine pooled rates, predictors and temporal-trend of VCE adverse events over the past two decades. Methods Systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE for English-language publications reporting VCE adverse events (January 1, 2000 to March 31, 2019). Data were extracted independently by two investigators. Pooled VCE adverse event rates were calculated using the random or fixed model as appropriate. Predictors and temporal-trend of each adverse event were performed by meta-regression analyses. Results In total, 402 studies were identified, including 108,079 VCE procedures. Rate of retention, swallow disorder, aspiration, technical failure, and procedural adverse events were 0.73% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.59–0.89%), 0.75% (95% CI 0.43–1.13%), 0.00% (95% CI 0.00–0.00%), 0.94% (95% CI 0.65–1.28%), 0.67% (95% CI 0.32–1.10%), respectively; incomplete examination rate of esophagus, stomach, small bowel, and colon were 9.05%, 7.69%, 12.08%, 19.19%, respectively. Patency capsule reduced retention rate by 5.04%, whereas known inflammatory bowel disease increased retention rate by 4.29%. Elder was the risk and protective factor for small bowel incomplete examination (0.30%) and swallow disorder (− 0.72%), respectively. Abstract Background Emerging evidence indicates nitrite inhalants have become increasingly prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM). The present study aimed to describe the prevalence and correlates of nitrite inhalants use and its association with risky sexual behaviors and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/syphilis infection among MSM in Chongqing, a city in China where MSM were burdened with the highest pooled HIV prevalence in the country. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in Chongqing between March 2019 and February 2020. Information of demographics, drug use, sexual behaviors and HIV testing was collected through an anonymous survey. Blood samples were drawn from each participant for the diagnoses of HIV and syphilis. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate factors correlated with nitrite inhalants use and its relationship with risky sexual behaviors and HIV/syphilis infection. Results Of the 1151 eligible participants, 18.9% (218) reported use of at least one type of recreational drugs in the past 6 months, and nitrite inhalants were the most commonly used substance (17.7, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 15.6–20.2%). The proportions of participants reported engaging in group sex and practicing condomless internal ejaculation during anal sex in the past six months were 5.8% (95% CI: 4.4–7.2%) and 41.7% (95% CI: 38.7–44.7%), respectively. The general prevalence of HIV and syphilis infection among the enrolled MSM were 16.8% (95% CI: 14.7–19.0%) and 12.6% (95% CI: 10.7–14.4%), respectively. Factors positively associated with nitrite inhalants use included: age ≤ 25 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.10–3.94), monthly individual income ≥ CNY 3000 (Chinese Yuan) (aOR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.18–3.22), preferring receptive anal intercourse (aOR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.34–3.84) and versatile anal intercourse (aOR = 2.60, 95% CI: 1.64–4.13), age at first anal intercourse

Coal samples from the Shanxi Shaping coal mine were selected to investigate the occurrence of H2S in low sulfur coal seams. The adsorption mechanism of coal to H2S was explored, and an occurrence equation for H2S in coal seams was fitted through adsorption experiment results. The results showed that under ambient temperature and pressure conditions, the H2S adsorbed by coal reached equilibrium within 24 h. The increase in H2S concentrations and the moisture content of coal samples resulted in an increase in the adsorption capacity of H2S. Chemical adsorption of H2S by the coal also occurred. The total sulfur content in the coal increased, and water promoted the conversion from H2S to sulfur in coal. After adsorption, most of the H2S remains in the coal structure in the form of inorganic sulfur, such as sulfur hydride, iron sulfide sulfur, and monomeric sulfur, and a small proportion of H2S is bonded in the structure of the coal in the form of organic sulfur such as thiophene, C-S-C, and C-SH. Therefore, the higher the total sulfur content in coal, the greater the occurrence of H2S. The total amount of H2S increased exponentially with the concentration of free H2S and the moisture content of coal at equilibrium. This meant that the total amount of H2S in the coal seam could be estimated by fitting an equation according to the concentration of free H2S and the moisture content of coal seams. The concentration of free H2S decreased linearly with the increase in moisture content of the coal, therefore, the concentration of H2S in space could be reduced by injecting water into coal seams.

Although the isolated threat of disease often motivates people to avoid others, people need the help and cooperation of others to protect themselves against pandemic disease threats. Therefore, the fear of contracting a highly contagious virus like COVID-19 should motivate people to believe that they can in fact count on the help and cooperation of others for protection. Trusting in others provides the basis to anticipate their cooperation. Therefore, we expected a greater daily threat of contracting COVID-19 to motivate people to trust more in others, providing needed assurance that others would keep them safe from harm. We obtained 4 daily diary samples involving 2794 participants who provided in excess of 18,000 daily observations within the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each day, we tracked (1) disease threat, captured daily by personal concerns about COVID-19 and infection totals in the nearest most populous city, and (2) trust in others, captured daily by expressions of trust in intimates, collective caregivers (e.g., President, Congress), and strangers. Participants in two samples completed 2-month follow-ups. Integrative analyses of the daily diaries revealed that people trusted more in intimates and collective caregivers on days they had greater (vs. less) reason to be concerned about COVID-19. Further integrative analyses of the follow-up data revealed that participants who were initially more likely to trust in others on days when COVID-19 cases in nearby communities spread more rapidly later reported greater confidence that others would keep them safe from harm. That is, they evidenced greater physical, interpersonal, and collective security in social connection than participants who were initially less likely to defensively trust in others on such occasions. The present findings suggest that ecological threats may dynamically motivate people to trust others more than they otherwise would, providing optimism that collectively-faced crises may motivate social cooperation when it is most needed.

In order to meet the needs of attitude correction of the optical fiber sensor array, an all-fiber optical sensor combined with FBG and CFBG-FP is proposed to monitor its attitude angle. The FBG sensor for pitch and roll angles detection employs a geometric model solution to shift the center wavelength of the three fiber Bragg gratings connected to it through the mass sphere, allowing for pitch and roll angle detection. Based on the magnetostrictive effect, the CFBG-FP sensor for heading angle detection employs changes of the cavity length of the chirped grating Fabry-Pérot cavity connected to its surface. The method of interpolation data processing and derivation of the attitude angle matrix is used to realize heading angle detection. The experimental results indicate that the FBG sensor for the pitch and roll angles detection has an effective detection range of 180 degrees and an angle measurement error of less than 1.5 degrees. Meanwhile, in the region beyond 10 degrees in the geomagnetic north-south direction, the angle measurement error of the CFBG-FP sensor for the heading angle detection is less than 1.3 degrees. Moreover, the impact of temperature in the system is minimized, demonstrating the validity of this combined fiber optical approach in the attitude angle measurements.

Alkylresorcinols (ARs), which are phenolic lipids found in wheat bran, have attracted a considerable amount of attention because of their antioxidant properties. However, the mechanism of ARs for regulating neuroprotective activity remains unclear. The correlation between the cellular neuroprotective effects of ARs in HT22 cells and their in vitro antioxidant activity were investigated. The results showed that two main constituents of crude ARs were C19:0 and C21:0, which was identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Pre-treatment with 400 μg/mL crude ARs could protect from H2O2-induced cellular damage involving low cell viability, leakage of lactate dehydrogenase and decreased superoxide dismutase activity. The maximum radical scavenging ability of DPPH•, ABTS•+, • O2− and •OH– was 85.45%, 88.89%, 84.42% and 87.36%. The neuroprotection effect of ARs was significantly correlated with in vitro antioxidant capacity, confirmed by the maximum correlation coefficients being 0.9988, –0.9974 and 0.9972. The antioxidation of ARs potentially promoted neuroprotective effect and further study is needed to clarify the other mechanism behind ARs benefits.

Background: The lung cancer staging system is insufficient for a comprehensive evaluation of patient prognosis. We constructed a novel immunoscore model to predict patients with high risk and poor survival.Method: Immunoscore was developed based on z-score transformed enrichment score of 11 immune-related gene sets of 109 immune risk genes. The immunoscore model was trained in lung adenocarcinoma cohort from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA-LUAD) (n = 400), and validated in other two independent cohorts from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), GSE31210 (n = 219) and GSE68465 (n = 356). Meta-set (n = 975) was formed by combining all training and testing sets.Result: High immunoscore conferred worse prognosis in all sets. It was an independent prognostic factors in multivariate Cox analysis in training, testing and meta-set [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.96 (2.24–3.9), P < 0.001 in training set; HR = 1.99 (1.21–3.26), P = 0.006 in testing set 1; HR = 1.48 (1.69–2.39), P = 0.005 in testing set 2; HR = 2.01 (1.69–2.39), P < 0.001 in meta-set]. Immunoscore-clinical prognostic signature (ICPS) was developed by integrating immunoscore and clinical characteristic, and had higher C-index than immunoscore or stage alone in all sets [0.72 (ICPS) vs. 0.7 (immunoscore) or 0.59 (stage) in training set; 0.75 vs. 0.72 or 0.7 in testing set 1; 0.65 vs. 0.61 or 0.62 in testing set 2; 0.7 vs. 0.66 or 0.64 in meta-set]. Genome analysis revealed that immunoscore was positively correlated with tumor mutation burden (R = 0.22, P < 0.001). Besides, high immunoscore was correlated with high proportion of carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (R = 0.32, P < 0.001) in tumor microenvironment but fewer CD8+ cells infiltration (R = −0.28, P < 0.001).Conclusion: The immunoscore and ICPS are potential biomarkers for evaluating patient survival. Further investigations are required to validate and improve their prediction accuracy.

Detecting microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers expression is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has achieved microRNA sensing for the diagnosis of primary liver cancers. In this work, we developed a SERS technology for the rapid detection of lung cancers-related miRNA (miR-196a) using bimetallic Au-Ag nanowire (AgNW@AuNPs) substrates coupled with the target hairpin DNA. The finite-difference time-domain simulation proved that a large number of “hot spots” were generated between the AgNW and AuNPs, which resulted in a huge enhancement of the signal of Raman reporters. Filter paper treated by hexadecenyl succinic anhydride hydrophobic and modified with AgNWs@AuNPs was used as capturing substrate. The detection limits of miR-196a in PBS and serum were as low as 96.58 aM and 130 aM, respectively. Studies on nonspecific sequence and single-base mismatch of miRNA demonstrated that SERS-based platform was highly selective, excellent uniform, and reproducible. Finally, the platform was used to show that the miR-196a expression in the serum of lung cancer patients was much higher than that in healthy people. The detection results indicated that the SERS platform had potential applications in cancer diagnosis and might be a viable alternative to the conventional miRNA detection method, the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology.

The paper aims to investigate the influence of basalt fiber (BF) on the crack resistance of the asphalt mixture and conduct a mechanical analysis. First, two typical asphalt mixtures, namely AC-13 and SMA-13, were designed. The impact of BF on the mixture design results was analyzed. Then, several macroscopic tests, namely the four-point bending test, indirect tensile test, and semicircular bending test (SCB), were conducted to assess the effect of BF on the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. Finally, the influence of BF on the cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures was analyzed based on an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) observation. The results show that: (1) BF increases the optimal asphalt content of AC13 and decreases the optimal asphalt content of SMA-13, which is caused by the different asphalt-absorption capacity of BF and lignin fiber (LF). (2) BF enhances both the fatigue crack resistance and temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. The enhancement on the SMA-13 is more significant, indicating that the enhancement of BF on asphalt mixtures is related to the type of aggregate gradation. (3) BFs in the asphalt mixture lap each other to form a spatial network structure. Such structure can effectively improve the crack resistance of the mixture by dispersing the load stress and preventing the flow of asphalt mastic. The study results provide an effective method to design crack-resistant asphalt mixtures.

Ochratoxin A(OTA) is considered to be one of the most important contaminants of food and feed worldwide. The liver is one of key target organs for OTA to exert its toxic effects. Due to current lifestyle and diet, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been the most common liver disease. To examine the potential effect of OTA on hepatic lipid metabolism and NAFLD, C57BL/6 male mice received 1 mg/kg OTA by gavage daily. Compared with controls, OTA increased lipid deposition and TG accumulation in mouse livers. In vitro OTA treatment also promoted lipid droplets accumulation in primary hepatocytes and HepG2 cells. Mechanistically, OTA prevented PPARγ degradation by reducing the interaction between PPARγ and its E3 ligase SIAH2, which led to activation of PPARγ signaling pathway. Furthermore, downregulation or inhibition of CD36, a known of PPARγ, alleviated OTA-induced lipid droplets deposition and TG accumulation. Therefore, OTA induces hepatic steatosis via PPARγ-CD36 axis, suggesting that OTA has an impact on liver lipid metabolism and may contribute to the development of metabolic diseases.

Mid-infrared (MIR) photonics are generating considerable interest because of the potential applications in spectroscopic sensing, thermal imaging, and remote sensing. Silicon photonics is believed to be a promising solution to realize MIR photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The past decade has seen a huge growth in MIR PIC building blocks. However, there is still a need for the development of MIR reconfigurable photonics to enable powerful on-chip optical systems and new functionalities. In this paper, we present an MIR (3.7~4.1 μm wavelength range) MEMS reconfiguration approach using the suspended silicon waveguide platform on the silicon-on-insulator. With the sub-wavelength grating claddings, the photonic waveguide can be well integrated with the MEMS actuator, thus offering low-loss, energy-efficient, and effective reconfiguration. We present a simulation study on the waveguide design and depict the MEMS-integration approach. Moreover, we experimentally report the suspended waveguide with propagation loss (−2.9 dB/cm) and bending loss (−0.076 dB each). The suspended waveguide coupler is experimentally investigated. In addition, we validate the proposed optical MEMS approach using a reconfigurable ring resonator design. In conclusion, we experimentally demonstrate the proposed waveguide platform’s capability for MIR MEMS-reconfigurable photonics, which empowers the MIR on-chip optical systems for various applications.

A wide variety of polymer additives have been widely used in recent years. However, the effect of different polymer additives on the durability of asphalt binders has not been investigated thoroughly. To evaluate the aging property of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt binder with different polymer additives, three polymer modifiers, namely high modulus modifier (HMM), anti-rutting agent (ARA), and high viscosity modifier (HVM), were added to it. First, the Thin Film Over Test (TFOT) and Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) was performed on the asphalt binders. The rheological properties of the four asphalt binders before and after aging were then checked by the Dynamic Shear Rheometer Test (DSR). The chemical compositions of the asphalt binders were determined by the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) test. Several aging indicators were adopted to reflect the aging degree of the asphalt binders. The results show that when polymer additives are added to the SBS asphalt binder, the complex modulus, storage modulus, loss modulus, and rutting factor substantially increase and the phase angle decreases. All the test parameters become higher after aging. The phase angle of the SBS asphalt binder is the highest at both unaged and aged states, while its other parameters values are the smallest. Moreover, the Carbonyl Aging Indicator (CAI) of SBS with polymer additives becomes lower under both TFOT and PAV conditions, indicating that polymer additives can improve the aging resistance of SBS asphalt, of which HVM modifies the aging resistance best. Complex Modulus Aging Indicator (CMAI) and Storage Modulus Aging Indicator (SMAI) have the best correlation coefficients with CAI, and the two aging indicators can be used to predict the aging degree of polymer modified asphalt binders.

To clarify the influence of fiber type on the long-term performance of stone mastic asphalt (SMA), this paper used basalt fiber (BF) and lignin fiber (LF) to modify SMA-13 (SMA with aggregate nominal maximum particle size of 13.2 mm) asphalt mixture. The pavement performances (high-temperature performance, cracking resistance at low and medium temperature, and water stability) of the two kinds of fiber-reinforced SMA-13 were checked under different aging degrees (unaged, short-term aged and long-term aged), scanning electron microscope (SEM) test was conducted to explain the strengthening mechanism of the fibers. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) was used to analyze the changes in the chemical composition of asphalt after aging. The results of the wheel tracking test and uniaxial penetration test showed that the high-temperature performance of the BFSMA-13 (defined as the SMA-13 containing BF) is better than that of the LFSMA-13 (defined as the SMA-13 containing LF) at different aging degrees. The high-temperature performance of BFSMA-13 increases with the increase of the aging degree, while the aging process decreases the high-temperature property of LFSMA-13. The results of the three-point bending test and semi-circular bending (SCB) proved that BFSMA-13 is more capable of deformation and less prone to cracking at low and medium temperatures. The results of the immersion Marshal test indicated that BF can better improve the strength and the water stability of the SMA-13 mixture than LF. The SEM images showed that basalt fibers form a solid three-dimensional network structure in the mixture which could contribute to the strengthening of the mixture. The results of infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) degrades during asphalt mixture aging, and that the chemical composition of asphalt changes more after aging in LFSMA-13 than in BFSMA-13. The conclusions of this study help toward further understanding of the performance changes of the SMA-13 mixture during its service life and to guide the selection of fiber additives for SMA-13 mixtures.

To evaluate the long-term performances of different polymer-modified asphalt mixtures, three modifiers were chosen to modify AC-13 (defined as the asphalt concrete with the aggregate nominal maximum particle size of 13.2 mm); namely, high viscosity modifier (HVM), high modulus modifier (HMM), and anti-rutting agent (ARA). The deformation and cracking resistance of different polymer-modified mixtures were checked at different aging conditions (unaged, short-term aged, and long-term aged for 5, 10, and 15 days respectively). The results of the Hamburg wheel-track test and uniaxial penetration test (UPT) showed that the rutting resistance of all asphalt mixtures changed in a V-shape as the aging progressed. From the unaged stage to the long-term aging stage (5 days), the rutting resistance decreases gradually. While after the long-term aging stage (5 days), the rutting resistance increases gradually. Results from the semicircular bending test (SCB) and the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) indicated that the cracking resistance of all the mixtures gradually decline with the deepening of the aging degree, indicating that aging weakens the crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. Additionally, test results showed that the rutting resistance of ARA AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing ARA) is the best, the cracking resistances of ARA AC-13, HMM AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing HMM) and HVM AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing HVM) have no significant difference, and different polymer modifiers had different sensitivities to aging due to the polymer content and the type of modifier. The conclusions of this study help to further understand the long-term performance of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures during service life and to help guide the selection of modifiers for mixtures.

Optomechanical nanocavities open a new hybrid platform such that the interaction between an optical cavity and mechanical oscillator can be achieved on a nanophotonic scale. Owing to attractive advantages such as ultrasmall mass, high optical quality, small mode volume and flexible mechanics, a pair of coupled photonic crystal nanobeam (PCN) cavities are utilized in this paper to establish an optomechanical nanosystem, thus enabling strong optomechanical coupling effects. In coupled PCN cavities, one nanobeam with a mass meff~3 pg works as an in-plane movable mechanical oscillator at a fundamental frequency of πΩm/2π=4.148 MHz. The other nanobeam couples light to excite optical fundamental supermodes at 1542.858 and 1554.464 nm with a Qo larger than 4 × 104. Because of the optomechanical backaction arising from an optical force, abundant optomechanical phenomena in the unresolved sideband are observed in the movable nanobeam. Moreover, benefiting from the in-plane movement of the flexible nanobeam, we achieved a maximum displacement of the movable nanobeam as 1468 fm/Hz1/2. These characteristics indicate that this optomechanical nanocavity is capable of ultrasensitive motion measurements.

A new class of hybrid systems that couple optical and mechanical nanoscale devices is under development. According to their interaction concepts, two groups of opto-mechanical systems are summarized as mechanically tunable and radiation pressure-driven optical resonators. On account of their high-quality factors and small mode volumes as well as good on-chip integrability with waveguides/circuits, photonic crystal (PhC) cavities have attracted great attention in sensing applications. Benefitting from the opto-mechanical interaction, a PhC cavity integrated opto-mechanical system provides an attractive platform for ultrasensitive sensors to detect displacement, mass, force, and acceleration. In this review, we introduce basic physical concepts of opto-mechanical PhC system and describe typical experimental systems for sensing applications. Opto-mechanical interaction-based PhC cavities offer unprecedented opportunities to develop lab-on-a-chip devices and witness a promising prospect to further manipulate light propagation in the nanophotonics.

An optical fiber current sensor based on Fabry-Perot interferometer using a fiber Bragg grating demodulation is proposed. Magnetic fluid is used as a sensitive medium in fiber optical Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity for the optical characteristic of magnetic-controlled refractive index. A Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is connected after the F-P interferometer which is used to reflect the optical power at the Bragg wavelength of the interference transmission spectrum. The corresponding reflective power of the FBG will change with different external current intensity, due to the shift on the interference spectrum of the F-P interferometer. The sensing probe has the advantages of convenient measurement for its demodulation, low cost and high current measurement accuracy on account of its sensing structure. Experimental results show that an optimal sensitivity of 0.8522 nw/A and measurement resolution of 0.001 A is obtained with a FBG at 1550 nm with 99% reflectivity.

In this paper, a method of using a one-dimensional position-sensitive detector (PSD) by replacing charge-coupled device (CCD) to measure the movement of the interference fringes is presented first, and its feasibility is demonstrated through an experimental setup based on the principle of centroid detection. Firstly, the centroid position of the interference fringes in a fiber Mach-Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer is solved in theory, showing it has a higher resolution and sensitivity. According to the physical characteristics and principles of PSD, a simulation of the interference fringe’s phase difference in fiber M-Z interferometers and PSD output is carried out. Comparing the simulation results with the relationship between phase differences and centroid positions in fiber M-Z interferometers, the conclusion that the output of interference fringes by PSD is still the centroid position is obtained. Based on massive measurements, the best resolution of the system is achieved with 5.15, 625 μm. Finally, the detection system is evaluated through setup error analysis and an ultra-narrow-band filter structure. The filter structure is configured with a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing positive and negative refraction material, which can eliminate background light in the PSD detection experiment. This detection system has a simple structure, good stability, high precision and easily performs remote measurements, which makes it potentially useful in material small deformation tests, refractivity measurements of optical media and optical wave front detection.

Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) is an imaging technique to produce centimeter resolution over hundreds-of-meter range on the sea floor, by constructing a virtual aperture whose length automatically adjusts itself for a given focusing range. SAS is near-field acoustic imaging, and this implies that the sound velocity should be accurately estimated for well focused imaging. Otherwise there will be image quality loss. However, sound velocity in the ocean varies with space and time, and there might also be measuring error of CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth) sensor, so sound velocity error has become one of the limiting factors to improve SAS resolution further. To characterize the effect of sound velocity error quantificationally, the practice SAS resolution is mode as the convolution of ideal seafloor reflectivity function and a phase error function in frequency domain, where the phase error is caused by incorrect sound velocity. Then the SAS resolution parameterized is calculated as a function of the sound velocity measuring error, or sound velocity gradient. It is shown that SAS azimuthally (along track) resolution loss, caused by sound velocity measurement error, increases linearly with detection range. Meanwhile the loss caused by sound velocity gradient increases squarely. It is simulated by considering the synthetic aperture data collection for a particular pixel, and results show that the point scatter response will defocus when the sound velocity measuring error is up to 1% at 200m range, or the sound velocity changes up to 2% over a typical gradient at 200m range, and be worse at a longer range. Furthermore, we demonstrate the influence of sound velocity errors on SAS imagery using a sea trial data and real CTD measurements at South China Sea. We evaluate the degradation in image quality with respect to sound velocity errors by using two plastic balls and a variable seafloor scene, and results also support the accuracy of theoretical conclusions above.

Tensile stress and thermal damage resulting from thermal loading will reduce the anti-fraying and anti-fatigue of workpieces, which is undesirable for micro-grinding, so it is imperative to control the rise of temperature. This investigation aims to propose a physical-based model to predict the temperature with the process parameters, wheel properties and material microstructure taken into account. In the calculation of heat generated in the micro-grinding zone, the triangular heat-flux distribution is adopted. The reported energy partition model is also utilized to calculate the heat converted into the workpiece. In addition, the Taylor factor model is used to estimate the effects of crystallographic orientation (CO) and its orientation distribution function (ODF) on the workpiece temperature by affecting the flow stress and grinding forces in micro-grinding. Finally, the physical model is verified by performing micro-grinding experiments using the orthogonal method. The result proves that the prediction matches well with the experimental values. Besides, the single-factorial experiments are conducted with the result showing that the model with the consideration of the variation of Taylor factor improves the accuracy of the temperature prediction.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in optical sensors based on microcavities due to their advantages of size reduction and enhanced sensing capability. In this paper, we aim to give a comprehensive review of the field of photonic crystal nanobeam cavity-based sensors. The sensing principles and development of applications, such as refractive index sensing, nanoparticle sensing, optomechanical sensing, and temperature sensing, are summarized and highlighted. From the studies reported, it is demonstrated that photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which provide excellent light confinement capability, ultra-small size, flexible on-chip design, and easy integration, offer promising platforms for a range of sensing applications.

In the micro-grinding of single-crystal copper, the effect of crystallography becomes significant as the wheel works intra-crystalline. To quantify the effect of crystallographic orientation (CO) related to the cutting direction on the micro-grinding process, this article presents a Taylor factor model by examining the number and style of activated slip systems. Then, the flow stress model of monocrystalline material is developed considering the variation of the Taylor factor. Furthermore, the models of chip formation and rubbing forces are derived from the flow stress model, while the plowing force is predicted by the Vickers hardness. Then, the overall grinding force model of the whole wheel is developed by incorporating the process parameters and the wheel properties. Finally, micro-grinding experiments are conducted to verify the model, using only the Taylor factor as the variable. The proposed analysis is also compared with the previously reported model, which considers the Taylor factor as a constant of 3.06. The comparison between the two predictions and experimental data shows that the consideration of Taylor factor variability improves the accuracy of prediction.
