Water is arguably the most important molecule for mankind. It is becoming more critical to secure water supply, which is increasingly difficult. Desalination is an ideal solution – taking abundant seawater and turning it into potable water – however requires energy for distillation and/or membrane-based reverse osmosis (RO) processes even though the technologies were highly optimized. Modern desalination technologies, namely RO membranes, is based on the rejection of ions (mostly sodium and chloride) on the phase boundary is the main mechanism. Meanwhile, the development of supramolecular chemistry showed that selective recognition and sequestration of ions can reduce energy input by taking advantage of pre-organized “host” environments. However, this approach renders difficulties in aqueous media due to high hydration energy of ions. Moreover, a regeneration of the host can be cumbersome due to the high affinity between the host and guest ions, which is prerequisite for the recognition. We found a completely different approach: stimuli mediated ion-exchange for removing chloride ions. This is based on well-known Solvay process where baking soda is produced from brine (NaCl + H2O), CO2 and ammonia. After ion exchange between ammonium bicarbonate and salt, ammonium chloride is produced, which is water soluble. By employing hydrophobic amines, now we can mediate Solvay-like process while removing in situ generated ammonium chloride from brine solutions and real seawater samples up to 1 L scale. This method can be applied in a continuous flow system with amine-decorated resin, producing desalinated water by using only CO2 and acid treatment to decompose produced NaHCO3.

Background and Purpose: Perampanel is approved for the adjunctive treatment of focal-onset seizures (FOS) with or without secondary generalized seizures. The FAME (Fycompa® as first Add-on to Monotherapy in patients with Epilepsy; NCT02726074) study evaluated the efficacy and safety of perampanel added to monotherapy in patients with FOS with or without secondary generalized seizures (SGS). Post hoc analyses of the FAME study assessed potential predictors of response and an in-depth evaluation of the safety and efficacy of perampanel.Methods: Efficacy was assessed by reduction of total seizure frequency by ≥50%, ≥75% or 100%, and safety by incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and TEAEs leading to discontinuation. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses for treatment response were performed.Results: Most patients (82/85) received perampanel doses of 4-8 mg/day during maintenance therapy and the highest efficacy rates were achieved with 4 mg/day, irrespective of efficacy outcome. Doses of 4 or 6 mg/day in patients with FOS with SGS (n=16) produced comparable efficacy outcomes. In multivariate analysis, total perampanel dose was predictive of 50% and 75% response rates; longer total perampanel administration period with 50% response; and concomitant non-anti-seizure medication with a 100% response. Patients developed a TEAE more frequently during the 12-week titration period (60.2%) than the 24-week maintenance period (28.4%), including dizziness (45.5% vs. 9.1%), somnolence (10.2% vs. 0%), and headache (4.5% vs. 3.4%).Conclusions: Post hoc analyses show that even low doses of perampanel may be effective and TEAEs are usually self-limited or well-tolerated.

Background and Purpose: FAME (Fycompa® as first Add-on to Monotherapy in patients with Epilepsy; NCT02726074), a previously reported single-arm, phase IV study, showed that perampanel improved seizure control as first add-on to failed anti-seizure medication (ASM) monotherapy in 85 South Korean patients aged ≥12 years with focal-onset seizures (FOS) with/without focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. We present results of three post hoc analyses of FAME that further assessed the efficacy and safety of perampanel.Methods: Patients were stratified by low- (4, 6 mg/day) versus high- (8, 10, 12 mg/day) dose maintenance perampanel, perampanel added to first- versus second-line ASM monotherapy, and concomitant background ASM monotherapy and perampanel dose. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with a ≥50% reduction in total seizure frequency during the 24-week maintenance period. Intercellular nutrient and signal transduction are essential to sustaining multicellular organisms and maximizing thebenefits of multicellularity. It has long been believed that red algal intercellular transport of macromolecules is preventedby the protein-rich pit plug within pit-connections, the only physical connection between cells. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran and recombinant green fluorescence protein (rGFP) of various molecular sizes were injected into vegetativecells of Griffithsia monilis using a micromanipulator, and intercellular transport of the fluorescent probes was examined.Pit-connections were found to provide intercellular transport of tracers at rates comparable to plasmodesmata in otherorganisms. The time necessary for the transport to an adjacent cell was dependent on the molecular size and the directionof the transport. Fluorescent dextran of 3 kDa was transported to adjacent cells in 1–2 h after injection and migratedto all cells of the filament within 24 h, but fluorescent dextran of 10–20 kDa took 24 h to transfer to neighboring cells. Themigration occurred faster towards adjacent reproductive cells and to apical cells than basally. Fluorescent tracers above40 kDa and rGFP was not transported to neighboring cells, but accumulated near the pit plug. Our results suggest thatpit-connections are conduit for macromolecules between neighboring cells and that these size-specific conduits allowintercellular communication between the vegetative cells of red algae.

ConspectusAsymmetric cation-binding catalysis in principle enables the use of (alkali) metal salts, otherwise insoluble in organic solvents, as reagents and effectors in enantioselective reactions. However, this concept has been a formidable challenge due to the difficulties associated with creating a highly organized chiral environment for cations and anions simultaneously. Over the last four decades, various chiral crown ethers have been developed as cation-binding phase-transfer catalysts and examined in asymmetric catalysis. However, the limited ability of chiral crown ethers to generate soluble reactive anions in a confined chiral cage offers a restricted reaction scope and unsatisfactory chirality induction. To address the constraints of monofunctional chiral crown ethers as cation-binding catalysts, it is therefore desirable to develop a cooperative cation-binding catalyst possessing secondary binding sites for anions, which enables the generation of a reactive anion within a chiral cage of a catalyst. This account summarizes our design, development, and applications of chiral BINOL-based oligoethylene glycols (oligoEGs) as a new type of bifunctional cation-binding catalyst. We initially found that achiral oligoEGs were efficient promoters in nucleophilic fluorination with potassium fluoride. Thereby, we hypothesized that, by breaking the closed cyclic ether unit of chiral crown ethers, the free terminal -OH groups could activate the electrophiles by hydrogen bonding whereas the ether oxygens could act as the Lewis base to coordinate metal ions, thus generating soluble anions in a confined chiral cage. This hypothesis was realized by synthesizing a series of chiral variants of oligoEGs by connecting two 3,3'-disubstituted-BINOL units with glycol linkers. Readily available BINOL-based chiral oligoEGs enabled numerous asymmetric transformations out of the reach of chiral monofunctional crown ether catalysts. We have demonstrated that this new type of bifunctional cation-binding catalysts can generate a soluble fluoride anion from alkali metal fluorides, which can be a versatile chiral promoter for diverse asymmetric catalytic reactions, kinetic resolution (selectivity factor of up to ∼2300), asymmetric protonation, Mannich reactions, tandem cyclization reactions, and the isomerization of allylic alcohols and hemithioacetals. We have also successfully utilized our chiral oligoEG catalysts along with alkali metal salts of carbon- and heteroatom-based nucleophiles, respectively, for asymmetric Strecker reactions and the asymmetric synthesis of chiral aminals. Transamidation reactions are often mediated by reactive substrates in the presence of overstoichiometric activating reagents and/or transition metal catalysts. Here we report the use of CO2 as a traceless catalyst: in the presence of catalytic amounts of CO2, transamidation reactions were accelerated with primary, secondary, and tertiary amide donors. Various amine nucleophiles including amino acid derivatives were tolerated, showcasing the utility of transamidation in peptide modification and polymer degradation (e.g., Nylon-6,6). In particular, N,O-dimethylhydroxyl amides (Weinreb amides) displayed a distinct reactivity in the CO2-catalyzed transamidation versus a N2 atmosphere. Comparative Hammett studies and kinetic analysis were conducted to elucidate the catalytic activation mechanism of molecular CO2, which was supported by DFT calculations. We attributed the positive effect of CO2 in the transamidation reaction to the stabilization of tetrahedral intermediates by covalent binding to the electrophilic CO2.

The vessel speed reduction program (VSRP) was first introduced in the Port of Los Angeles in 2001 to improve air quality. In this study, an algorithm was developed to calculate ship emissions with a bottom-up approach based on ship activity using automatic identification system (AIS) data. The target vessel applied to the emission calculation was a vessel participating in Korea’s VSRP. Factors considered for the calculation of emissions were ship type, speed, gross tonnage, engine power, load, sulfur content of fuel, and fuel consumption rate by engine age. The algorithm is designed to calculate the reduction amount by VSRP by simultaneously calculating the emission amount of the actual speed and the emission amount of the cruise speed when not participating in VSRP. The emission results of ships that participated in the VSRP in 2020 revealed that their speed was reduced by 47% and carbon dioxide emissions by 71.9%. These results were verified through comparison with the fuel consumption report of the container fleet presented by the International Maritime Organization. Our findings can be used to monitor the air pollutant emissions of ships entering major ports in Korea and to develop policies envisaged at reducing the production and effect of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Moreover, we recommend that this model be replicated in other countries for monitoring ship-induced emissions.

The Erythropeltidales are a common group of small, mostly epiphytic, marine red algae. However, they are little known in Korea. Many of the described species of Erythropeltidales differ subtly in morphology, and often the morphological differences are due to the substrate or environmental changes. Integration of molecular data with stan- dardized culture conditions has been recommended to account for these algae. A Madagascaria species was first collected from the western coast of Korea and was identified as Madagascaria erythrocladioides based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. Morphological characteristics conformed well with its original description, and the phylogenetic analysis based on rbcL sequence showed Korean M. erythrocladioides nests in the same clade with the original species described in Japan with a genetic distance of 0.0-0.1%. This species was isolated from a red alga, Pterocladiella capillacea, in laboratory culture. The thallus ontogeny and host preference were examined by a co-culture with 13 different species of algae. Results showed a relatively broad host preference in mono-spore attachment and epiphyte development of Madagascaria erythrocladioides. Mono-spores of M. erythrocladioides attached to most of the red algal hosts’ surfaces but no crustose thalli developed on some of the algal hosts even after one month of co-culture.

This report provides a detailed description of the methodology for ophthalmic examinations according to the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VII and VIII (from 2017 to 2021). The KNHANES is a nationwide survey which has been performed since 1998 in representatives of whole Korean population. During the KNHANES VII and VIII, in addition to the ophthalmic questionnaire, intraocular pressure measurement, visual field test, auto refractometry, axial length and optical coherence tomography measurements were included. This new survey will provide not only provide normative and pathologic ophthalmic data including intraocular pressure, refractive error, axial length, visual field and precise measurement of anterior segment, macula and optic nerve with optical coherence tomography, but also a more accurate diagnosis for major adult blindness diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and other ocular diseases, for the national Korean population.
