Learning the electron scattering around atomic impurities is a fundamental step to fully understand the basic electronic transport properties of realistic conducting materials. Although many efforts have been made in this field for several decades, atomic scale transport around single point-like impurities has yet been achieved. Here, we report the direct visualization of the electric current induced dipoles around single atomic impurities in epitaxial bilayer graphene by multi-probe low temperature scanning tunneling potentiometry as the local current density is raised up to around 25 A/m, which is considerably higher than that in previous studies. We find the directions of these dipoles which are parallel or anti-parallel to local current are determined by the charge polarity of the impurities, revealing the direct evidence for the existence of the carrier density modulation effect proposed by Landauer in 1976. Furthermore, by $in$ $situ$ tuning local current direction with contact probes, these dipoles are redirected correspondingly. Our work paves the way to explore the electronic quantum transport phenomena at single atomic impurity level and the potential future electronics toward or beyond the end of Moore's Law.

The quantum many body states in the BCS-BEC crossover regime are of long-lasting interest. Here we report direct spectroscopic evidence of BCS-BEC crossover in real-space in a FeSe monolayer thin film by using spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectra. The crossover is driven by the shift of band structure relative to the Fermi level. The theoretical calculation based on a two-band model qualitatively reproduces the measured spectra in the whole crossover range. In addition, the Zeeman splitting of the quasi-particle states is found to be consistent with the characteristics of a condensate. Our work paves the way to study the exotic states of BCS-BEC crossover in a two-dimensional crystalline material at the atomic scale.

We have grown thulium tellurides (TmTe2, TmTe3) thin layers (less than four layers) on graphene/SiC (0001) by molecular beam epitaxy. The charge density waves (CDWs) and lattice superstructures (LSs) are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Clear CDW patterns in real space are observed on surface of metallic TmTe3. Two CDWs are with wave vectors 0.29c* and 0.31a* respectively. LSs with various periods are unveiled on the surface of TmTe2 and TmTe3. The electronic structures of these films are semiconducting. These results show that superstructures in rare earth tellurides can have two origins, CDWs or LSs.

Iron selenide (FeSe) is an iron-based superconductor which shows unique properties, including strongly anisotropic superconducting gap, paramagnetism in undoped compound and extremely small Fermi pocket size. In this work, we demonstrate that the sizes of electron and hole pockets in FeSe monolayer become much smaller than those in bulk. The Fermi energy is in the order of a few meV and can be fine-tuned by the thickness of graphene layers underneath. Despite the low carrier density, the FeSe monolayers grown on trilayer or multi-layer graphene are superconducting. The superconducting gap size is sensitive to the Fermi energy of the hole band. Remarkably, the FeSe monolayer provides the opportunity to study the physics in the crossover regime where the Fermi energy and superconducting gap are comparable to each other.

The van der Waals material CeOI is predicted to be a layered antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by DFT+U calculation. We successfully grow the CeOI films down to monolayer on graphene/6H-SiC(0001) substrate by using molecular beam epitaxy. Films are studied by {\it in-situ} scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, which shows a band gap of 4.4 eV. A metallic phase with composition unidentified also exists. The interplay between disorder and superconductivity is a subtle and fascinating phenomenon in quantum many body physics. The conventional superconductors are insensitive to dilute nonmagnetic impurities, known as the Anderson's theorem. Destruction of superconductivity and even superconductor-insulator transitions occur in the regime of strong disorder. Hence disorder-enhanced superconductivity is rare and has only been observed in some alloys or granular states. Because of the entanglement of various effects, the mechanism of enhancement is still under debate. Here we report well-controlled disorder effect in the recently discovered monolayer NbSe$_2$ superconductor. The superconducting transition temperatures of NbSe$_2$ monolayers are substantially increased by disorder. Realistic theoretical modeling shows that the unusual enhancement possibly arises from the multifractality of electron wave functions. This work provides the first experimental evidence of the multifractal superconducting state.

SnTe hosts ferroelectricity that competes with its weak non-trivial band topology: in the high-symmetry rocksalt structure--in which its intrinsic electric dipole is quenched--this material develops metallic surface bands, but in its rhombic ground-state configuration--that hosts a non-zero spontaneous electric dipole--the crystalline symmetry is lowered and the presence of surface electronic bands is not guaranteed. Here, the type of ferroelectric coupling and the atomistic and electronic structure of SnTe films ranging from 2 to 40 ALs are examined on freestanding samples, to which atomic layers were gradually added. 4 AL SnTe films are antiferroelectrically-coupled, while thicker freestanding SnTe films are ferroelectrically-coupled. The electronic band gap reduces its magnitude in going from 2 ALs to 40 ALs but it does not close due to the rhombic nature of the structure. These results bridge the structure of SnTe films from the monolayer to the bulk.
