The current study aimed to investigate the sociodemographic and psychological variables as well as the function of NSSI related to the cessation of NSSI by analyzing the difference between those currently engaged in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and those who have stopped NSSI behaviors.A total of 490 adults with a history of NSSI (359 females) were assigned to one of two groups: NSSI engagement within the last 12 months or "current NSSI" (There were no significant group differences in sex or socioeconomic status, while individuals with current NSSI were slightly younger than those who had ceased NSSI behavior. Regarding the functions of NSSI, the current NSSI group endorsed more intrapersonal functions. Moreover, the participants who had ceased NSSI behavior reported significantly less perceived stress, dysfunctional attitudes, alexithymia, emotion reactivity, and suicidal ideation. On the other hand, the lifetime NSSI group showed greater psychological resources such as self-esteem, distress tolerance, and resilience.We revealed apparent differences in NSSI functions, clinical symptoms, and psychological resources depending on the maintenance and cessation of NSSI. This study highlights the need for a better understanding of the factors that stop as well as those that continue NSSI behaviors. HIGHLIGHTSThe lifetime NSSI group reported less intrapersonal NSSI functions.The current NSSI group suffered from more clinical symptoms.Individuals who ceased NSSI had more psychological resources.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is caused by synaptic and neuronal loss in the brain. One of the characteristic hallmarks of AD is senile plaques containing amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). Aβ is produced from amyloid precursor protein (APP) by sequential proteolytic cleavages by β-secretase and γ-secretase, and the polymerization of Aβ into amyloid plaques is thought to be a key pathogenic event in AD. Since γ-secretase mediates the final cleavage that liberates Aβ, γ-secretase has been widely studied as a potential drug target for the treatment of AD. γ-Secretase is a transmembrane protein complex containing presenilin, nicastrin, Aph-1, and Pen-2, which are sufficient for γ-secretase activity. γ-Secretase cleaves >140 substrates, including APP and Notch. Previously, γ-secretase inhibitors (GSIs) were shown to cause side effects in clinical trials due to the inhibition of Notch signaling. Therefore, more specific regulation or modulation of γ-secretase is needed. In recent years, γ-secretase modulators (GSMs) have been developed. To modulate γ-secretase and to understand its complex biology, finding the binding sites of GSIs and GSMs on γ-secretase as well as identifying transiently binding γ-secretase modulatory proteins have been of great interest. In this review, decades of findings on γ-secretase in AD are discussed.

Several genes in innate immunity have been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effect of innate immunity on amyloid β (Aβ) production, which makes amyloid plaques in AD brains, was previously not known. Recently, the antiviral protein interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3) has been identified as a novel γ-secretase modulatory protein for Aβ production. In this review, the mechanisms of how innate immunity modulates Aβ production via IFITM3-γ-secretase complexes and contributes to AD pathogenesis are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of various emotion regulation (ER) strategies on emotional distress and the urge to self-harm in response to mood induction in individuals who engaged in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Sixty-one individuals who engaged in NSSI participated in this study were assigned to an experimental ER strategy group (Distraction = 20, Cognitive Reappraisal = 21, Acceptance = 20). Participants completed the Self-Injury Urge Scale (SIUS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State (STAI X-1), and Positive and Negative Affect Scales (PANAS) at several time points: T1) baseline; T2) after watching a film to induce negative mood; and a final time T3) after watching the film again but while using the group-specific ER strategy in response to the induced negative mood. We found that distraction effectively reduced the urge for NSSI after a negative mood induction, as measured using the SIUS. Additionally, cognitive reappraisal and distraction significantly reduced the STAI X-1 and negative affect scale (NAS) scores of the PANAS in individuals with NSSI who underwent negative mood induction. However, acceptance was significantly less effective in relieving unpleasant and undesirable inner experiences in the short term. Our findings suggest that both distraction and cognitive reappraisal are helpful in alleviating negative emotional experiences, and distraction may be useful in dealing with the urge to engage in NSSI. More evidence-based research to test the current findings is required.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been consistently associated with the lack of desire to avoid physical pain. Yet, possible abnormalities in brain structures related to pain have not been examined in individuals with NSSI. This study investigated gray matter volume alterations in pain processing regions and their associations with self-injury in participants engaging in NSSI (n = 63) and age-, sex-, and handedness-matched controls (n = 63). As a result, significant volume reductions were found in the right anterior insula, bilateral secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), and left inferior frontal gyrus. Individuals with reduced volume of the anterior insula and SII were more likely to endorse affect-regulatory and sensation-seeking functions of NSSI and inflict self-injury with higher perceived pain intensity. Our results provide the first empirical evidence that individuals with NSSI may be characterized by abnormalities in brain regions associated with the affective component of pain processing. These neurobiological alterations may be associated with their maladaptive approach to noxious and painful NSSI experiences.

Aim: Despite accelerating increases in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), identifying promising biomarkers for NSSI and their clinical implications still remains challenging. Our study aimed to investigate possible alterations in brain network topologies and their association with emotional processing in individuals engaging in NSSI by leveraging novel computational methods of individualized structural covariance networks (SCNs) and graph theoretical analysis.Methods: Participants engaging in NSSI (n = 61) and age, sex, and handedness matched controls (n = 62) underwent anatomical T1-weighted MRI scanning and completed self-report questionnaires for emotion dysregulation and emotional contagion traits. After constructing individualized SCNs using cortical thickness measures, graph theoretical analysis was applied to examine the topological properties of structural covariance networks. Results: Compared to controls, individuals engaging in NSSI exhibited significantly reduced global clustering, as well as reduced local clustering coefficient in the right insular sulcus, right middle frontal gyrus, right angular gyrus, left inferior temporal gyrus, and left anterior occipital sulcus (FDR-corrected P < .05). Hubs unique to the NSSI group were the right middle posterior cingulate cortex (mPCC), left middle occipital gyrus, left orbital gyrus, right precentral gyrus, and left superior temporal sulcus. The local clustering coefficient of the right insular sulcus was associated with emotional contagion for positive emotions, and the hubness of the mPCC was associated with emotion dysregulation in the NSSI group. Conclusion: Our findings constitute a first step toward identifying the neurocircuitry-based biomarkers of NSSI, which may be characterized by alterations in structural brain networks and their connections to emotional processing.

Multiferroic materials that have more than two ferroicities at the same time have long been regarded as one of the strongest candidates to achieve technological breakthroughs in many kinds of nanodevice applications. Various types of multiferroic materials have been discovered and devised to date; however, related studies have been conducted without identifying a complete winner because each has a decisive disadvantage. The recently discovered multiferroicity in the 2D Cr2Ge2Te6/In2Se3 van der Waals heterostructure represents an important opportunity to create a new turning point in multiferroic research. Through first-principles density functional theory calculations, we studied the preferential characteristics of the spin magnetic moment of 2D Cr2Ge2Te6 induced by the ferroelectric switching of the In2Se3 monolayer in the presence of the strains that inevitably exist in any kind of heterostructure. From the results, we found that the multiferroicity in the Cr2Ge2Te6/In2Se3 heterostructure reacts quite sensitively to the strain level, revealing the possibility of manipulating multiferroic properties in the structure.

Objective: Although nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) in youth is an important mental health concern worldwide, limited studies have investigated its sociodemographic correlates in early adulthood. This study explored associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and self-harm behaviors, including NSSI and suicidal ideation, in a community-based sample of young adults. Methods: A total of 414 Korean young adults engaged in NSSI and 200 controls completed online self-report questionnaires assessing sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, using logistic regression to estimate the odds ratio and analyzed risk factors for NSSI, especially the independent influence of SES on NSSI risk. Multivariate regression was performed to identify the role of socioeconomic disadvantage in suicidal ideation in NSSI people. Results: Logistic regression showed that low SES significantly increased NSSI risk. Multivariable regression also revealed that lower SES was related to more severe suicidal ideation in young adults with NSSI after controlling for gender and the higher-severity NSSI index, including the number of NSSI methods used and NSSI intrapersonal functions. Conclusions: This is the first study to directly address socioeconomic gradients of a general population of young adults with NSSI and its effects, and socioeconomic status should be considered preemptively when defining suicide risks of this group and when intervening in self-injurious behaviors.

신종 코로나 바이러스 감염에 대한 경계와 사회적 거리두기 지침이 일상의 ‘뉴 노멀(new norm)’로 자리잡으며 전세계적으로 정신건강문제가 대두되고 있다. 특히 신종 감염병으로 개인의 경제적 활동과 대면 진료 및 거리 이동이 제한되고 있는 바, 악화된 경제 및 물리적 상황을 극복하기 위한 시도로 원격의료(telemedicine)와 모바일 헬스(mHealth)에 대한 요구가 증대되고 있다. 본 고찰 연구에서는 그간 학술 문헌을 통해 제안된 mHealth 기반 정신건강 서비스를 우울장애, 불안장애, 강박 및 관련 장애, 외상 및 스트레스 관련 장애, 양극성 및 관련 장애, 조현병 스펙트럼 및 기타 정신병적 장애, 섭식장애, 수면-각성 장애, 물질사용장애에의 적용 순으로 살펴보았다. 또한, mHealth 기반 심리치료의 선택과 평가, 개발과 관련한 시사점과 앞으로의 방향성에 대해 논의하였다.

Conservatives are more sensitive to threatening/anxious situations in perceptual and cognitive levels, experiencing emotional responses and stress, while liberals are more responsive to but tolerant of ambiguous and uncertain information. Interestingly, conservatives have greater psychological well-being and are more satisfied with their lives than liberals despite their psychological vulnerability to stress caused by threat and anxiety sensitivities. We investigated whether conservatives have greater resilience and self-regulation capacity, which are suggested to be psychological buffers that enhance psychological well-being, than liberals and moderates. We also explored associations between intrinsic functional brain organization and these psychological resources to expand our neurobiological understanding of self-regulatory processes in neuropolitics. We found that conservatives, compared to liberals and moderates, had greater psychological resilience and self-regulation capacity that were attributable to greater impulse control and causal reasoning. Stronger intrinsic connectivities between the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and precuneus and between the insula and frontal pole/OFC in conservatives were correlated with greater resilience and self-regulation capacity. These results suggest the neural underpinnings that may allow conservatives to manage the psychological stress and achieve greater life satisfaction. This study provides neuroscientific evidence for the different responses of liberals and conservatives to politically relevant social issues.

We have carried out a comprehensive parametric analysis on the potential performance of a graphene nanoribbon field effect transistor (GNRFET). We modeled the behavior of GNRFETs with nanometer width GNR channels to formulate a self-consistent, non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) scheme in conjunction with the Poisson equation and allow the GNRFET to operate as a switch. Based on the results, we propose a metric to compete with current silicon CMOS highperformance (HP) or low-power (LP) devices, explaining that this can vary widely depending on the GNRFET structure parameters.

Unlike experimental measurements that appeared to be quite large activation barriers, oxygen vacancies in zirconia-based resistive random access memory (ReRAM) are believed to migrate with a fairly low energy barrier, and this discrepancy has not been noticed nor seriously questioned up to date. In this paper, we work on this problem by means of first-principles calculations categorizing all the possible migration pathways by crystallographic directions. From the results, it is found that the low activation energy of oxygen vacancy that is expected from the switching characteristic of the device is originated from +2q charged oxygen vacancies in a nanometer-sized filament migrating into a particular crystallographic direction of monoclinic zirconia.

Emerging evidence indicates that emotion processing deficits are associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, limited attention has been paid to the socio-affective functions of NSSI. In this study, we aimed to investigate the affective theory of mind (ToM) in medication-free individuals engaging in NSSI at both behavioral and neural levels. Twenty-eight individuals (mean age = 22.96 years) who engaged in NSSI and 38 age-, sex-, and IQ-matched controls (mean age = 22.79 years) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing the “Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test” (RMET). All participants also completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI). Although we did not find significant group differences in the RMET performance, the NSSI group, relative to the controls, exhibited significantly greater left medial superior frontal lobe activation and decreased right angular gyrus activation than did the control group. Reduced right angular gyrus activity was related to higher DERS and TAS scores across all participants. Our findings provide new evidence for aberrant neural processing of affective ToM in self-injurers. Future studies in developing intervention protocols for NSSI should focus on the multifaceted phases of socio-affective processing.

BACKGROUND Attempts to use virtual reality (VR) as a treatment for various psychiatric disorders have been made recently, and many researchers have identified the effects of VR in psychiatric disorders. Studies have reported that VR therapy is effective in social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, there is no prior study on the neural correlates of VR therapy in patients with SAD. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to find the neural correlates of VR therapy by evaluating the treatment effectiveness of VR in patients with SAD using portable functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS Patients with SAD (n=28) were provided with 6 sessions of VR treatment that was developed for exposure to social situations with a recording system of each participant’s self-introduction in VR. After each VR treatment session, the first-person view (video 1) and third-person view (video 2) clips of the participant’s self-introduction were automatically generated. The functional activities of prefrontal regions were measured by fNIRS while watching videos 1 and 2 with a cognitive task, before and after whole VR treatment sessions, and after the first session of VR treatment. We compared the data of fNIRS between patients with SAD and healthy controls (HCs; n=27). RESULTS We found that reduction in activities of the right frontopolar prefrontal cortex (FPPFC) in HCs was greater than in the SAD group at baseline (t=–2.01, P=.049). Comparing the frontal cortex activation before and after VR treatment sessions in the SAD group showed significant differences in activities of the FPPFC (right: t=–2.93, Pt=–2.25, P=.03) and the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) (right: t=–2.10, P=.045; left: t=–2.21, P=.04) while watching video 2. CONCLUSIONS Activities of the FPPFC and OFC were associated with symptom reduction after VR treatment for SAD. Our study findings might provide a clue to understanding the mechanisms underlying VR treatment for SAD. It is well known that collective migrations of oxygen vacancies in oxide is the key principle of resistance change in oxide-based resistive memory (OxRAM). The practical usefulness of OxRAM mainly arises from the fact that these oxygen vacancy migrations take place at relatively low operating voltages. The activation energy of oxygen vacancy migration, which can be inferred from the operational voltage of an OxRAM, is much smaller compared to the experimentally measured activation energy of oxygen, and the underlying mechanism of the discrepancy has not been highlighted yet. We ask this fundamental question in this paper for tantalum oxide which is one of the most commonly employed oxides in OxRAMs and try the theoretical answer based on the first-principles calculations. From the results, it is proven that the exceptionally large mobility of oxygen vacancy expected by the switching model can be well explained by the exceptionally low activation barrier of positively charged oxygen vacancy within the two-dimensional substructure.

The dispute over Ta2O5 atomic structure was recently resolved by the discovery of the λ -phase model (space group Pbam), but due to the widely scattered experimental band gaps, the energy band gap of Ta2O5 still remains questionable. This letter presents a complete first principle calculation of the λ phase Ta2O5 energy band gap and looks at how different conditions of strain can modify it. From the results, we conclude that the theoretical band gap of λ phase Ta2O5 is about 3.7 eV and show that the band gap difference of about 0.45 eV can be made by only 3% compressive or tensile strain.

Objective The purpose of this study was to validate and verify the Korean version of the Inventory of Statements about Self-Injury (ISAS) to better understand the psychopathological characteristics of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among young adults. Methods A total of 539 Korean adults (age: 19 to 30 years; 343 participants with a history of NSSI) completed a self-report online survey regarding NSSI validation research. The test-retest reliability, internal consistency, concurrent validity, and factor analysis of the ISAS behavioral scales and the ISAS functional scales were examined. The factor structure and construct validity were evaluated by performing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results The results demonstrated the good internal consistency and temporal stability of the Korean version of the ISAS. The EFA revealed that the NSSI functions exhibited a two-factor structure: intrapersonal functions and interpersonal functions. The CFA also confirmed that the model fitness indicators of the 2-factor structure were appropriate. In addition, the ISAS functional scales were related to increased suicidal ideations and decreased resilience in participants with a history of NSSI. Conclusion The current findings suggest that the Korean version of the ISAS is a robust measure of NSSI behaviors. Further research is needed to investigate the causal relationship between clinical symptoms, given the significant correlation between self-reported NSSI and suicidal ideation and decreased resilience.

Although oxide-based resistive switching memory (OxRAM) is one of the strong next-generation high-capacity memory candidates, it has an unresolved problem that the higher the resistance levels, the larger the cycle-to-cycle resistance variabilities to be operated in multi-resistance level mode. In this paper, we develop a simple theory from the operating principles of OxRAMs that excellently matches with experiments both qualitatively and quantitatively. From the theory, we can finally understand the fundamental capabilities of multi-resistance level operation of OxRAMs, and how to improve the switching properties within that.

Objective In this study, we examined the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Prodromal Questionnaire-Brief (PQ-B), a self-report screening instrument for clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). Methods A total of 3,400 middle, high school and college students participated, and 261 subjects with a PQ-B total score ≥3 completed both the PQ-B and the Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the psychometric properties of the PQ-B. Results A cut-off of 7 for the PQ-B total score and a cut-off of 22 for the PQ-B distress score showed the best balance of sensitivity (72.2%, 77.8%) and specificity (71.4%, 75.0%). Conclusion The Korean version of the PQ-B showed good reliability and validity for predicting prodromal risk symptoms in the community population.

With proper guidance, virtual reality (VR) can provide psychiatric therapeutic strategies within a simulated environment. The visuo-haptic-based multimodal feedback VR solution has been developed to improve anxiety symptoms through immersive experience and feedback. A proof-of-concept study was performed to investigate this VR solution. Nine subjects recently diagnosed with panic disorder were recruited, and seven of them eventually completed the trial. Two VR sessions were provided to each subject. Depression, anxiety, and VR sickness were evaluated before and after each session. Although there was no significant effect of the VR sessions on psychiatric symptoms, we could observe a trend of improvement in depression, anxiety, and VR sickness. The VR solution was effective in relieving subjective anxiety, especially in panic disorder without comorbidity. VR sickness decreased over time. This study is a new proof-of-concept trial to evaluate the therapeutic effect of VR solutions on anxiety symptoms using visuo-haptic-based multimodal feedback simultaneously.

Methods We recruited participants with and without a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder to undergo clinical assessments (Social Phobia Scale and Post-Event Rumination Scale) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. Participants with social anxiety disorder received virtual reality–based exposure treatment for 6 sessions starting immediately after baseline testing. After the sixth session, participants with social anxiety disorder completed follow-up scans during which they were asked to judge whether a series of words (positive, negative, neutral) was relevant to them. Results Of 25 individuals with social anxiety disorder who participated in the study, 21 completed the sessions and follow-up; 22 control individuals also participated. There were no significant differences in age (P=.36), sex (P=.71), or handedness (P=.51) between the groups. Whole-brain analysis revealed that participants in the social anxiety disorder group had increased neural responses during positive self-referential processing in the medial temporal and frontal cortexes compared with those in the control group. Participants in the social anxiety disorder group also showed increased left insular activation and decreased right middle frontal gyrus activation during negative self-referential processing. After undergoing virtual reality–based therapy, overall symptoms of the participants with social anxiety disorder were reduced, and these participants exhibited greater activity in a brain regions responsible for self-referential and autobiographical memory processes while viewing positive words during postintervention fMRI scans. Interestingly, the greater the blood oxygen level dependent changes related to positive self-referential processing, the lower the tendency to ruminate on the negative events and the lower the social anxiety following the virtual reality session. Compared with that at baseline, higher activation was also found within broad somatosensory areas in individuals with social anxiety disorder during negative self-referential processing following virtual reality therapy. Conclusions These fMRI findings might reflect the enhanced physiological and cognitive processing in individuals with social anxiety disorder in response to self-referential information. They also provide neural evidence of the effect of virtual reality exposure therapy on social anxiety and self-derogation.

The Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing the ability to recognize emotion. To examine the psychometric properties of the Korean version of the RMET and to explore the possible implications of poor performance on this task, 200 adults aged 19-32 years completed the RMET and the Korean version of the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20K), the cognitive empathy domain of the Korean version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI-C), and the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory-Aggression (BDHI-A). In the present study, confirmatory factor analyses confirmed that the hypothesized three-factor solution based on three different emotional valences of the items (positive, negative, or neutral) had a good fit to the data. The Korean version of the RMET also showed good test-retest reliability over a 4-week time interval. Convergent validity was also supported by significant correlations with subscales of the TAS-20K, and discriminant validity was identified by nonsignificant associations with IRI-C scores. In addition, no difference was found in RMET performance according to the sex of the photographed individuals or the sex or educational attainment of the participants. Individuals with poor RMET performance were more likely to experience alexithymia and aggression. The current findings will facilitate not only future research on emotion processing but also the assessment of conditions related to the decreased ability to decode emotional stimuli.

BACKGROUND Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by excessive fear of negative evaluation and humiliation in social interactions and situations. Virtual reality (VR) treatment is a promising intervention option for SAD. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to create a participatory and interactive VR intervention for SAD. Treatment progress, including the severity of symptoms and the cognitive and emotional aspects of SAD, was analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. METHODS In total, 32 individuals with SAD and 34 healthy control participants were enrolled in the study through advertisements for online bulletin boards at universities. A VR intervention was designed consisting of three stages (introduction, core, and finishing) and three difficulty levels (easy, medium, and hard) that could be selected by the participants. The core stage was the exposure intervention in which participants engaged in social situations. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed through Beck Anxiety inventory (BAI), State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Internalized Shame Scale (ISS), Post-Event Rumination Scale (PERS), Social Phobia Scale (SPS), Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), Brief-Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE), and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). RESULTS In the SAD group, scores on the BAI (F=4.616, P=.009), STAI-Trait (F=4.670, P=.004), ISS (F=6.924, P=.001), PERS-negative (F=1.008, PF=8.456, PF=6.117, P=.004), KSAD (F=13.259, PF=4.103, P=.009) significantly improved over the treatment process. Compared with the healthy control group before treatment, the SAD group showed significantly higher scores on all scales (PP CONCLUSIONS These findings indicated that a participatory and interactive VR intervention had a significant effect on alleviation of the clinical symptoms of SAD, confirming the usefulness of VR for the treatment of SAD. VR treatment is expected to be one of various beneficial therapeutic approaches in the future. Despite decades of speculation, many causal aspects that contribute to the heterogeneity of alexithymia still must be clarified. This study examined the extent of the alexithymia phenotype and its contribution to social function in the general population. In total, 200 participants (females = 111) completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), multiple self-reporting questionnaires measuring emotion intelligence, empathy, hostility and impulsivity, and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). In the multivariate analysis, highly alexithymic individuals appeared to report subjective deficits in emotion recognition and regulation as well as increased impulsivity; however, their empathy skills were intact, and even the proneness to experiencing empathic distress with others' suffering was increased among alexithymic individuals. We also compared the clinical and behavioral manifestations of highly alexithymic male and female subjects to those of each gender control group. As a result, in contrast to their subjective self-reports of emotion processing impairment, the RMET performance appeared to be preserved in alexithymic females; however, highly alexithymic males showed actual deficits in the emotion identification task. Future research needs to further refine the constructs of alexithymia to incorporate the phenotypic changes in affected individuals in relation to measuring instruments, the extent of empathic distress, and gender.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is associated with considerable deficits in managing negative self-directed internal experiences. The present study explores the neurophysiological correlates of self-referential processing in individuals with NSSI. A total of 26 individuals with NSSI (≥5 episodes of NSSI behavior in the past year, without suicide attempts) and 35 age-, sex-, education-, and intelligence quotient (IQ)-matched controls participated in this study. Participants underwent fMRI scanning as they performed a personal relevance rating task, which required them to evaluate the personal relevance of emotional words. As predicted, we found that individuals engaging in NSSI tended to rate negative adjectives as more relevant and positive adjectives as less relevant. An analysis of functional neuroimaging data showed that the NSSI group had increased activity relative to the control group in the inferior parietal lobe, inferior temporal gyrus, calcarine, insula, and thalamus in response to positive adjectives. The NSSI group also demonstrated greater activation in the calcarine and reduced activation in the inferior frontal gyrus in response to negative self-referential stimuli compared with the control group. In addition, increased right inferior parietal lobe activity during positive self-referential processing was correlated with reduced suicidal ideation in the NSSI group. Our study provides neural evidence for self-referential processing bias in individuals with NSSI and highlights the need for further research to clarify the pathophysiological features that are specific to NSSI.

While self-administered mobile app-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown efficiency and effectiveness over the past decade, attempts to address automatic and negative beliefs have been lacking. The purpose of this study was to introduce and verify a mobile app that directly intervenes in dysfunctional thoughts. This app-based treatment includes recognizing automatic and negative thoughts of the protagonist of scenarios, writing advice directly to the main character, and sharing advice provided by other participants.Thirty-four participants diagnosed with Other Specified Depressive Disorder were recruited and randomly allocated to a CBT-based mobile-app program, the Todac Todac (TT group), or a daily mood chart app program (control group). Participants were asked to use the software for 3 weeks. Assessments for autonomic thoughts and clinical symptoms were administered at baseline and at a follow-up evaluation.After completing the 3-week program, Dysfunctional Attitude Scale (DAS) scores in TT group were lower than they were in the control group. In clinical measures, both TT group and control group showed reduced Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scores and situation-dependent trait version of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-X2) at follow-up. However, TT group showed significantly reduced STAI-X2 scores compared to control group. For all participants, changes in DAS scores were correlated with BDI-II and STAI-X2 scores.Our preliminary findings provide promising evidence that scenario-based CBT mobile apps can be used to deliver feasible and efficacious cognitive therapy. Long-term research is needed to determine the impact and effectiveness of this new treatment format.

Introduction It has been suggested that the mentalizing network and the mirror neuron system network support important social cognitive processes that are impaired in schizophrenia. However, the integrity and interaction of these two networks have not been sufficiently studied, and their effects on social cognition in schizophrenia remain unclear. Methods Our study included 26 first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients and 26 healthy controls. We utilized resting-state functional connectivity to examine the a priori-defined mirror neuron system network and the mentalizing network and to assess the within- and between-network connectivities of the networks in FEP patients. We also assessed the correlation between resting-state functional connectivity measures and theory of mind performance. Results FEP patients showed altered within-network connectivity of the mirror neuron system network, and aberrant between-network connectivity between the mirror neuron system network and the mentalizing network. The within-network connectivity of the mirror neuron system network was noticeably correlated with theory of mind task performance in FEP patients. Conclusion The integrity and interaction of the mirror neuron system network and the mentalizing network may be altered during the early stages of psychosis. Additionally, this study suggests that alterations in the integrity of the mirror neuron system network are highly related to deficient theory of mind in schizophrenia, and this problem would be present from the early stage of psychosis.

Objective The purpose of this meta-analysis was to determine the applicability of web-based treatment programs for individuals with depression and quality of life impairments. Methods We conducted database and manual searches using imprecise search-term strategy and inclusion criteria. Research published from 2005 to December 2015 was included in this study. Upon review, a total of 12 published papers on web-based intervention for individuals with depression were assessed eligible for this meta-analysis. Effect sizes were estimated for depression and quality of life. Results The mean effect size of web-based treatment on depressive symptoms was 0.72. However, unlike the result showing medium to large effect size, the analysis on the quality of life did not yield adequate effects of web-based interventions. Conclusion Our results suggest robust benefits of employing web-based treatments for depressive symptoms. However, the adequacy of these relatively new intervention tools for individuals who suffer severe impairments of quality of life was found insufficient. The current study demonstrates the need to further develop web-based intervention techniques to improve overall functioning, as well as the clinical symptoms of patients with mental disorders.
