8. The C–I⋯O halogen bonding in crown ether chemistry.

Abstract

The role of the C–I⋯O halogen bonding in crown ether chemistry has been analyzed and rationalized by using thirteen newly synthesized cocrystals as models. The monotopic C–I⋯O halogen bonding was found to play a dominant role, whereas the bifurcated halogen bonding and the hydrogen-bond enhanced halogen bonding play minor roles. An unexpected new finding is that some binary mixtures of halogen-bond donor and acceptor can spontaneously absorb trace amounts of water from the solvent during the crystal growth period, forming more complex ternary cocrystals. Abstract

Resources can affect plant productivity and biodiversity simultaneously and thus are key drivers of their relationships in addition to plant–plant interactions. However, most previous studies only focused on a single resource while neglecting the nature of resource multidimensionality. Here we integrated four essential resources for plant growth into a single metric of resource diversity (RD) to investigate its effects on the productivity–biodiversity relationship (PBR) across Chinese grasslands. Results showed that habitats differing in RD have different PBRs—positive in low-resource habitats, but neutral in medium- and high-resource ones—while collectively, a weak positive PBR was observed. However, when excluding direct effects of RD on productivity and biodiversity, the PBR in high-resource habitats became negative, which leads to a unimodal instead of a positive PBR along the RD gradient. By integrating resource effects and changing plant–plant interactions into a unified framework with the RD gradient, our work contributes to uncovering underlying mechanisms for inconsistent PBRs at large scales.

32. Soil bacterial and fungal communities are linked with plant functional types and soil properties under different grazing intensities

Abstract

As a grassland management strategy in the typical steppe, livestock grazing can affect soil microbes and ecosystem functions via vegetation removal, trampling and manure deposition. However, the effects of grazing and its main consequences (e.g. the shifts in plant functional types and alterations in soil properties) on soil bacterial and fungal community composition remain unresolved. Taking advantage of a 5-year grazing exclosure experiment that tested different grazing intensities [control: no grazing (G0); light: 0.75 sheep ha−1 (G1); moderate: 1.50 sheep ha−1 (G2); heavy: 2.25 sheep ha−1 (G3); and overgrazing: 3.00 sheep ha−1 (G4)], we examined grazing-related changes in plant communities, soil chemistry and soil microbial communities. Grazing intensity affected the diversity and composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities via changes in plant species and soil nutrient contents. Increased grazing intensity reduced soil organic carbon (OC), suppressed the dominant bacterial phyla Proteobacteria and Bacteriodetes, and increased the abundance of oligotrophic bacteria in subordinate phyla (e.g. Verrucomicroba and Chloroflexi). Increased grazing intensity also promoted the dominant fungal phylum Ascomycetes because of the poor-nutrient soil environment. The decreased soil carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio in the G2 treatment was associated with an effect on the fungal community composition. Structural equation modelling demonstrated that responses of the bacterial community to grazing intensity were related to changes in soil OC and soil pH, whereas the combination of C4 plant community biomass and soil pH drove changes in the fungal community. Our study provides novel evidence that grazing affects plant functional group and soil chemistry through the soil pH and C/N ratio, which in turn affects bacterial and fungal communities. Abstract

Hyphae of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in soil often form complex mycorrhizal networks among roots of same or different plant species for transfer of nutrients from one plant to another. However, the effect of soil nitrogen (N) availability on nutrient transfer between different plant species via common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) has not been experimentally examined. In order to quantify CMN-mediated nutrient transfer between Leymus chinensis (LC) and Cleistogene squarrosa (CS), two systems, i.e. the CS–LC system (CS and LC were donor and recipient, respectively) and the LC–CS system (LC and CS were donor and recipient, respectively) were established. Stable isotopic 15N was applied to track N transfer between heterospecific seedlings connected by CMNs under three levels of soil N additions: no N addition control (N0), N addition with 7 mg/kg (N1) and N addition with 14 mg/kg (N2). In the CS–LC system, the highest rate of AMF colonization and hyphal length density (HLD) were found at N1. In contrast, maximum AMF colonization rate and HLD were recorded at N2 in LC–CS system. Consequently, plant biomass was significantly higher under N1 and N2 levels in CS–LC and LC–CS systems, respectively. Moreover, in CS–LC system, 15N transfer rate ranged from 16% to 61%, with maximum transfer rate at N1. For LC–CS system, 15N transfer rate was much lower, with the maximum occurring at N0. These findings suggest that CMNs could potentially regulate N transfer from a donor to recipient plant depending upon the strength of individual plant carbon sink. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
