Abstract

This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 23042 "Quality of Sustainable Experience (QoSE)". The seminar aimed to bring together people from different fields, perspectives and backgrounds. The participants discussed how experiences - as the main selling point of products and services – in various ICT-related domains can be made more sustainable, how they can contribute to relevant sustainable development goals, and how the quality and degree of sustainability of such experiences may be evaluated and be better understood. The main objectives of the seminar were to foster new alliances, to inspire, to trigger scientific renewal, as well as to identify future opportunities and research challenges through a hands-on approach.

Abstract

Indian Railways, one of the largest railway networks in the world today, has a peculiarity that a station exists almost every 5-7 km. Most trains do not stop at all stations and run through more stations than they stop at. The speed at which the trains run through the stations, therefore, is a crucial parameter that determines the run time of a train through a section and, hence, the total throughput (or carrying capacity of the railways). Indian Railways uses several signaling schemes to enable movement of trains in a safe manner. The signaling schemes play an important role in determining the action of the driver in terms of slowing down of trains and, consequently, on the throughput of the railway system. This paper examines the different signaling schemes used currently and in the recent past by Indian Railways from the point of view of information that they present to the train driver and the impact that it has on total throughput. The signaling schemes are compared using total signal entropy presented to the driver at each stage. Apart from theoretical computation of signal entropy, results of some experiments conducted to obtain the impact of signaling schemes on run time of trains are also presented. Abstract

Surface acoustic waves are transformed into bulk acoustic waves by grooves during scattering. Scattered Rayleigh waves at a shallow, rectangular groove are studied via the modal and volume perturbation methods. The latter was developed as a tool for analysing Rayleigh wave reflection and resulted in driving terms for grooves similar to those obtained via the boundary perturbation technique. The method's application for measuring the scattered field quantities in surface wave grooves is also suggested.

Abstract

A proposed design of a broadband integrated voice and data transmission network is presented along with a high speed packet switch constructed using commercially available components. Data traffic is controlled using suggested data flow control methods which are validated through simulation. Results show that the network effectively transmits voice and data traffic in different ratios and can retrieve transmissions from congestion with no adverse effect on the quality of delay- and loss-sensitive services.

Abstract

Around 52% of the population of India rely on farming for their livelihood which accounts for 17% of India’s GDP. Whilst most farmers are familiar with conventional farming practices, they are often ill positioned to promptly deal with diseases and plant infestations affecting their crops. Current advisory systems tend to be generic and are not tailored to specific plots or farms. This work comprises an agriculture advisory call center similar to a modern call center to provide an agriculture disease mitigation system. The information regarding an individual farm is collected using mobile phones. The image of diseased/infected crop is also captured using mobile phones and is made available to the expert to provide the advisory. To scale the advisory, an attempt is also made to automate the disease recognition process using image processing. Unfortunately, the photos taken will be sensitive to a number of factors including camera type and lighting incident on the scene. Ideally, the images would be processed in such a way as to provide the expert with a visual representation of the affected crops that reflects the true nature of the scene. We describe a framework for standardising the colour of plant images taken using both mobile phones and compact cameras within the context of the advisory system.

Abstract

The paper presents how connectivity feature integrated into a roof-top solar power system, Inverterless500, designed and developed to electrify off-grid and near off-grid homes in an energy efficient manner, is critical in optimum service delivery, especially for lower income homes. It makes such products not only suitable for different categories of homes, but also economically viable, offering a promising business solution. Monitoring and manageability are unique features that help in maintaining the solution at remote areas of installation where manual intervention is not routinely feasible. The paper the describes the technology and learnings gained from deployment of these systems that helped in improving the product and overall management process.
