Many underutilized edible fruit species (UEFS) are found in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP), which support food security (FS) for both indigenous people and other dependent communities. Unfortunately, there is little study and fragmented information available about these naturally edible products. The UEFS of the IGP was the subject of a systematic review utilizing the PRISMA protocol, which produced implications for FS and land degradation neutrality (LDN). This review aims to survey, summarize, and annotate the published information about the angiosperms native and naturalized UEFS of IGP to identify and make use of this species, particularly for the sustainable development of this region. A systematic review confirmed that 371 species of UEFS, of which 62 species were threatened and near threatened (TNT)-UEFS. Among the TNT-UEFS, 41 species were threatened, while 21 species were NT. The threatened species were further categorized as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in the IGP as vulnerable (21 species), endangered (16 species), and critically endangered (four species). This systematic review suggests integration of the native and naturalized UEFS in afforestation and reforestation programs to aid in various ecosystem services. Calamus inermis, Corypha taliera, Licuala peltata, and Saurauia punduana are examples of multipurpose species that require immediate sustainable conservation and cultivation initiatives to save them from extinction in the near future. Multipurpose species such as Aegle marmelos, Buchanania lanzan, Manilkara hexandra, Syzygium cuminii, Tamarindus indica are immensely constructive and climate-smart by surviving in harsh agroclimatic conditions and have great potential for establishment on marginal and wastelands throughout the IGP region. These resilient fruit species enhance biodiversity, ecosystems, and landscapes in addition to providing food for humans. It progressively advances India’s commitment to LDN, combating climate change, and achieving the UN-SDGs, which call for reducing hunger and raising FS by 2030. With the increasing water scarcity and the demand for sustainable agriculture, precise estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ET) is crucial for effective irrigation management, crop yield assessment, and equitable water distribution, particularly in semi-arid regions. In this study, a large aperture scintillometer (LAS) was used to validate the remote sensing-based ET model SETMI (Spatial Evapotranspiration Modeling Interface) in an irrigated maize-wheat cropping system in a semi-arid region at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Results obtained by the SETMI model depicted modeled surface energy fluxes compared well with LAS field data, showing a very high R2 (0.83–0.95) and NRMSE (8–29%). The SETMI model performed better in the case of the maize crop than the wheat crop in field experiments. Further, the SETMI model was employed at the regional level using high-resolution Sentinel-2 to estimate the regional water productivity of wheat crops over a semi-arid region in India. The estimated regional, seasonal wheat actual ET mainly ranged between 101 mm and 325 mm. The regional wheat water productivity varied from 0.9 kg m−3 to 2.20 kg m−3. Our research reveals that the SETMI model can give reliable estimates of regional wheat water productivity by examining its spatial and temporal fluctuations and facilitating the creation of regional benchmark values. Plants are frequently subjected to heavy metal (HM) stress that impedes their growth and productivity. One of the most common harmful trace metals and HM discovered is chromium (Cr). Its contamination continues to increase in the environment due to industrial or anthropogenic activities. Chromium is severely toxic to plant growth and development and acts as a human carcinogen that enters the body by inhaling or taking Cr-contaminated food items. Plants uptake Cr via various transporters, such as sulfate and phosphate transporters. In nature, Cr is found in various valence states, commonly Cr (III) and Cr (VI). Cr (VI) is soil's most hazardous and pervasive form. Cr elevates reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity, impeding various physiological and metabolic pathways. Plants have evolved various complex defense mechanisms to prevent or tolerate the toxic effects of Cr. These defense mechanisms include absorbing and accumulating Cr in cell organelles such as vacuoles, immobilizing them by forming complexes with organic chelates, and extracting them by using a variety of transporters and ion channels regulated by various signaling cascades and transcription factors. Several defense-related proteins including, metallothioneins, phytochelatins, and glutathione-S-transferases aid in the sequestration of Cr. Moreover, several genes and transcriptional factors, such as WRKY and AP2/ERF TF genes, play a crucial role in defense against Cr stress. To counter HM-mediated stress stimuli, OMICS approaches, including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metallomics, have facilitated our understanding to improve Cr stress tolerance in plants. This review discusses the Cr uptake, translocation, and accumulation in plants. Understanding the dynamics of vegetative greenness and how it interacts with various hydroclimatic factors is crucial for comprehending the implications of global climate change. The present study utilized the MODIS-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to understand the vegetation patterns over 21 years (2001–2021) in Rajasthan, India. The rainfall, land surface temperature (LST), and evapotranspiration (ET) were also analyzed. The changes, at a 30 m pixel resolution, were evaluated using Mann–Kendall's trend test. The results reveal that the NDVI, ET, and rainfall had increasing trends, whereas the LST had a decreasing trend in Rajasthan. The NDVI increased for 96.5% of the total pixels, while it decreased for 3.4% of the pixels, of theh indicates vegetation improvement rather than degradation. The findings of this study provide direct proof of a significant reduction in degraded lands throughout Rajasthan, particularly in the vicinity of the Indira Gandhi Canal command area. Concurrently, there has been a noticeable expansion in the cultivated land area. The trend of vegetation decline, particularly in the metro cities, has occurred as a result of urbanization and industrialization. In contrast to the LST, which has a decreasing gradient from the western to eastern portions, the spatial variability in the NDVI, ET, and rainfall have decreasing gradients from the southern and eastern to western regions. The results of correlations between the vegetative indices and hydroclimatic variables indicate that the NDVI has a strong positive correlation with ET (r2 = 0.86), and a negative correlation with LST (r2 = −0.55). This research provides scientific insights into vegetation change across Rajasthan, and may help the state to monitor vegetation changes, conserve ecosystems, and implement sustainable ecosystem management. Lead-based organic–inorganic perovskite (OIP) materials have shown great possibilities as absorber materials in photovoltaic devices. Despite its better power conversion efficiency (PCE), the toxicity of lead limits its application in photovoltaic organic solar cells. This limitation has encouraged researchers to find an alternative lead-free organic perovskite material that must be eco-friendly. Therefore, in this present research work, we have proposed a lead-free OIP heterostructure solar cell using CH3NH3SnI3 as the absorber layer, Cu2O as the hole transport layer (HTL), TiO2 as the electron transport layer (ETL), and FTO as a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) layer. Further, we have carried out a simulation study using SCAPS software to obtain a good performance of the proposed cell by optimizing various parameters. Thus, the obtained simulated results show that a moderate temperature of 305 K is necessary to achieve better cell efficiency. A significant decrease in efficiency is observed upon increasing the operating device temperature. Further, Gaussian energy distribution in the absorber OIP layer, CH3NH3SnI3 , shows better possibilities for obtaining a good performance from the proposed cell. On varying the Gaussian peak defect density from 1 × 1016 cm−3 to 6 × 1020 cm−3, the best-simulated result is offered at a concentration of 1.079 × 1016 cm−3. In addition, on varying the electron affinity of the active layer, we obtained the best result in its class at a value of 4.13 eV. Further, on energy band gap optimization of the active layer, we observed the maximum open-circuit voltage of 1.5 eV. Finally, all the performance parameters for the proposed OIP cell were found to be: PCE 18.27%, short-circuit current density 32.47 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage 0.7397 V, and FF 76.06%. Identifying sustainable crop production systems that improve yield from existing farmland while improving resource use efficiency is critical to meet the growing demands of the increasing human population and diminishing natural resources. Considering the increasing cost associated with inorganic fertilizer, integrated nutrient management using both organic and inorganic sources is important. Therefore, optimizing nutrient management practices that increase yield, improve soil quality, build up soil organic carbon storage, and maintain energy balance can help achieve sustainability in farming systems. In this regard, different nutrient management practices under the rice–rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping system were evaluated using five different criterions, namely, (i) crop yield response, (ii) soil quality, (iii) soil carbon stock, (iv) energy efficiency, and (v) profitability under lowland situations in the Goa state situated in the western coast of India. We tested six nutrient management treatments, namely, inorganic fertilizers, organic (farmyard manure), rice straw, and their combinations over three years from 2016 to 2019. The results revealed that integrated nutrient management improved soil carbon stock, microbial biomass carbon, and soil fertility more than the other treatments. The integrated use of farmyard manure and chemical fertilizer showed significantly higher crop yield (9.86 v/s 9.41 Mg ha−1), microbial biomass carbon (354 v/s 233.7 mg kg−1 soil), soil carbon stock (36.65 v/s 25.5 Mg C ha−1), energy efficiency (23.8 v/s 22.3), and net return (1776 v/s 1508 USD) than those associated with chemical fertilizer alone. We conclude that the application of chemical fertilizers/organic sources alone may not be sustainable for the rice–rice cropping system in the Goa state of India; the focus should be on integrated nutrient management systems.
