Iron chalcogenides superconductors, such as Fe(Te,Se) have recently garnered significant attention due to their simple crystal structure with a relatively easy synthesis process, high-temperature superconductivity, intrinsic topological band structure, and an unconventional pairing of superconductivity with ferromagnetism. Here, we report the complex in-plane refractive index measurement of nanometer-thin Fe(Te,Se) flake exfoliated from a single crystal FeTe$_{\text{0.6}}$Se$_{\text{0.4}}$ for photon wavelengths from 450 to 1100 nm over a temperature range from 4 K to 295 K. The results were obtained by employing a two-Drude model for the dielectric function of Fe(Te,Se), a multiband superconductor, and fitting the absolute optical reflection spectra using the transfer matrix method. A high extinction coefficient in the visible to near-infrared range makes nanometer-thin Fe(Te,Se) flakes a promising material for photodetection applications.

Advancements in optical quantum technologies have been enabled by the generation, manipulation, and characterization of light, with identification based on its photon statistics. However, characterizing light and its sources through single photon measurements often requires efficient detectors and longer measurement times to obtain high-quality photon statistics. Here we introduce a deep learning-based variational autoencoder (VAE) method for classifying single photon added coherent state (SPACS), single photon added thermal state (SPACS), mixed states between coherent/SPACS and thermal/SPATS of light. Our semisupervised learning-based VAE efficiently maps the photon statistics features of light to a lower dimension, enabling quasi-instantaneous classification with low average photon counts. The proposed VAE method is robust and maintains classification accuracy in the presence of losses inherent in an experiment, such as finite collection efficiency, non-unity quantum efficiency, finite number of detectors, etc. Additionally, leveraging the transfer learning capabilities of VAE enables successful classification of data of any quality using a single trained model. We envision that such a deep learning methodology will enable better classification of quantum light and light sources even in the presence of poor detection quality.

We report on the quantum photon statistics of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) quantum emitters by analyzing the Mandel Q parameter. We have measured the Mandel Q parameter for h-BN quantum emitters under various temperatures and pump power excitation conditions. Under pulsed excitation we can achieve a Mandel Q of -0.002 and under continuous-wave (CW) excitation this parameter can reach -0.0025. We investigate the effect of cryogenic temperatures on Mandel Q and conclude that the photon statistics vary weakly with temperature. Through calculation of spontaneous emission from an excited two-level emitter model, we demonstrate good agreement between measured and calculated Mandel Q parameter when accounting for the experimental photon collection efficiency. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness of Mandel Q in quantum applications by the example of random number generation and analyze the effect of Mandel Q on the speed of generating random bits via this method., Comment: Main text: 22 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. Color centered-based single photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have shown promising photophysical properties as sources for quantum light emission. Despite significant advances towards such a goal, achieving lifetime-limited quantum light emission in h-BN has proven to be challenging, primarily due to various broadening mechanisms including spectral diffusion. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate suppression of spectral diffusion by applying an electrostatic field. We observe both Stark shift tuning of the resonant emission wavelength, and emission linewidth reduction nearly to the homogeneously broadened lifetime limit. Lastly, we find a cubic dependence of the linewidth with respect to temperature at the homogeneous broadening regime. Our results suggest that field tuning in electrostatically gated heterostructures is promising as an approach to control the emission characteristics of h-BN color centers, removing spectral diffusion and providing the energy tunability necessary for integrate of quantum light emission in nanophotonic architectures.

Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have emerged as promising candidates for single-photon emitters (SPEs) due to their bright emission characteristics at room temperature. In contrast to mono- and few-layered hBN, color centers in multi-layered flakes show superior emission characteristics such as higher saturation counts and spectral stability. Here, we report a method for determining both the axial position and three-dimensional dipole orientation of SPEs in thick hBN flakes by tuning the photonic local density of states using vanadium dioxide (VO2), a phase change material. Emitters under study exhibit a strong surface-normal dipole orientation, providing some insight on the atomic structure of hBN SPEs, deeply embedded in thick crystals. We have optimized a hot pickup technique to reproducibly transfer flakes of hBN from VO2 onto SiO2/Si substrate and relocated the same emitters. The decay dynamics of excited carriers in graphene have attracted wide scientific attention, as the gapless Dirac electronic band structure opens up relaxation channels that are not allowed in conventional materials. We report Fermi-level-dependent mid-infrared emission in graphene originating from a previously unobserved decay channel: hot plasmons generated from optically excited carriers. The observed Fermi-level dependence rules out Planckian light emission mechanisms and is consistent with the calculated plasmon emission spectra in photoinverted graphene. Evidence for bright hot plasmon emission is further supported by Fermi-level-dependent and polarization-dependent resonant emission from graphene plasmonic nanoribbon arrays under pulsed laser excitation. Spontaneous plasmon emission is a bright emission process as our calculations for our experimental conditions indicate that the spectral flux of spontaneously generated plasmons is several orders of magnitude higher than blackbody emission at a temperature of several thousand Kelvin. In this work, it is shown that a large enhancement in radiation efficiency of graphene plasmons can be achieved by decorating graphene surface with gold nanodisks, which serve as out-coupling scatterers and promote localized plasmon excitation when they are resonant with the incoming excitation light. These observations set a framework for exploration of ultrafast and ultrabright mid-infrared emission processes and light sources.

The recent proposal of using an anisotropic vacuum for generating valley coherence in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers has expanded the potential of such valley degrees of freedom for applications in valleytronics. In this work, we open up a completely new regime, inaccessible with monolayer TMDCs, of spontaneously generated valley coherence in interlayer excitons in commensurate TMDC bilayer heterostructures. Using the peculiar out of plane polarization of interlayer excitons in conjunction with an in-plane anisotropic electromagnetic vacuum, we show that a much larger region of the Bloch sphere can be accessible in these heterostructures. We show the accessible phases of these excitons given this in-plane anisotropic electromagnetic vacuum. Our analysis of spontaneous coherence for interlayer excitons may pave the way for engineering an array of interacting quantum emitters in Moir\'e heterostructures.

In this paper, we present a novel route to tunable spontaneous valley coherence in heterostructures of two dimensional valleytronic materials with other layered materials hosting anisotropic polaritonic modes. We first discuss the dependence of this coherence on the conductivity tensor of the anisotropic part of a general heterostructure and on its geometrical configuration. Subsequently, we propose two implementations - one, using anisotropic plasmons in phosphorene and another with hyperbolic phonon polaritons in MoO3. In both these systems we show for the first time electrostatic tunability of the spontaneous valley coherence achieving unprecedented values of up to 80% in the near to mid infrared wavelengths at room temperature. The tunability of this valley coherence shown in these heterostructures will enable the realization of active valleytronic quantum circuitry.

Artificial defects embedded in periodic structures are important foundation for creating localized states with vast range of applications in condensed matter physics, photonics and acoustics. In photonics, localized states are extensively used to confine and manipulate photons. Up to now, all the proposed localized states are reciprocal and restricted by time reversal symmetry. Consequently, localization is bidirectional and photons at the allowed passband in the otherwise forbidden stop band are confined irrespective of the direction of incident beam. In this report, by embedding a single defect in a one-dimensional spatiotemporally modulated photonic lattice, we demonstrate that it is possible to have localization of photon only in one direction. In a spatiotemporally modulated photonics lattice, a time dependent potential generates an effective magnetic biasing, which breaks the reciprocity. Moreover, in such moving lattices the dispersion relation obtains a shift depending on the direction of effective magnetic biasing. A static defect synthesized in a temporally modulated lattice will generate a spatial localization of light in the bandgap. However, due to the shift of the bandgap the localization occurs in different frequencies depending on the direction of incident field. We envisage that this phenomenon might has impact not only in photonics but also other areas of physics and engineering such as condensed matter and acoustics, opens the doors for designing new types of devices such as non-reciprocal traps, sensors, unidirectional tunable filters, and might result in unconventional transports such as unidirectional lasing. Despite its applications, our proposal, namely a defect sate in a driven system, can be considered as a pedagogical example of Floquet problem with analytical solution.

We introduce and theoretically demonstrate a quantum metamaterial made of dense ultracold neutral atoms loaded into an inherently defect-free artificial crystal of light, immune to well-known critical chal- lenges inevitable in conventional solid-state platforms. We demonstrate an all-optical control on ultrafast time scales over the photonic topological transition of the isofrequency contour from an open to close topology at the same frequency. This atomic lattice quantum metamaterial enables a dynamic manipula- tion of the decay rate of a probe quantum emitter by more than an order of magnitude. This proposal may lead to practically lossless, tunable and topologically-reconfigurable quantum metamaterials, for single- or few-photon-level applications as varied as quantum sensing, quantum information processing, and quantum simulations using metamaterials.
