For matrix model and QFT, we discuss how dual gravitational geometry emerges from matrix degrees of freedom (specifically, adjoint scalars in super Yang-Mills theory) and how operator algebra that describes an arbitrary region of the bulk geometry can be constructed. We pay attention to the subtle difference between the notions of wave packets that describe low-energy excitations: QFT wave packet associated with the spatial dimensions of QFT, matrix wave packet associated with the emergent dimensions from matrix degrees of freedom, and bulk wave packet which is a combination of QFT and matrix wave packets. In QFT, there is an intriguing interplay between QFT wave packet and matrix wave packet that connects quantum entanglement and emergent geometry. We propose that the bulk wave packet is the physical object in QFT that describes the emergent geometry from entanglement. This proposal sets a unified view on two seemingly different mechanisms of holographic emergent geometry: one based on matrix eigenvalues and the other based on quantum entanglement. Further intuition comes from the similarity to a traversable wormhole discussed as the dual description of the coupled SYK model by Maldacena and Qi: the bulk can be seen as an eternal traversable wormhole connecting boundary regions., Comment: 39 pages

We investigate the emergent factorization of Hilbert space in the low-energy description of matrix models, addressing key aspects of the black hole information paradox. We examine the collective description for the low-energy sector of $SU(N)$ matrix model, characterized by a factorized Hilbert space composed of a finite number of boxes and anti-boxes. This factorization leads us to examine the emergence of thermofield dynamics (TFD) state in the low energy sector from a fine-tuned state. In addition, we study the collective Hamiltonian of the $U(N)$ matrix model for the semi-classical description of "particle-hole" fluctuations around a background Young tableau. Our investigation of these matrix models elucidates a concrete mechanism for constructing the truncated algebra of accessible observables, thereby facilitating an understanding of black hole complementarity. We construct a model of Pauli spin operators with all-to-all 4-local interactions by replacing Majorana fermions in the SYK model with spin operators. Equivalently, we replace fermions with hard-core bosons. We study this model numerically and compare the properties with those of the SYK model. We observe a striking quantitative coincidence between the spin model and the SYK model, which suggests that this spin model is strongly chaotic and, perhaps, can play some role in holography. We also discuss the path-integral approach with multi-local fields and the possibility of quantum simulations. We discuss the large $N$ expansion in backgrounds of extended states with focus on implementation of Goldstone symmetries and the construction of the associated Hilbert space. The formulation is given in the general framework of collective field theory. Case of translational symmetry is described first, as the basic example. The large $N$ thermofield represents the main topics, with the emergent dynamics of Left-Right bulk fields and collective symmetry coordinates. We explore the question of finiteness of the entanglement entropy in gravitational theories whose emergent space is the target space of a holographic dual. In the well studied duality of two-dimensional non-critical string theory and $c=1$ matrix model, this question has been studied earlier using fermionic many-body theory in the space of eigenvalues. The entanglement entropy of a subregion of the eigenvalue space, which is the target space entanglement in the matrix model, is finite, with the scale being provided by the local Fermi momentum. The Fermi momentum is, however, a position-dependent string coupling, as is clear in the collective field theory formulation. This suggests that the finiteness is a non-perturbative effect. We provide evidence for this expectation by an explicit calculation in the collective field theory of matrix quantum mechanics with vanishing potential. The leading term in the cumulant expansion of the entanglement entropy is calculated using exact eigenstates and eigenvalues of the collective Hamiltonian, yielding a finite result, in precise agreement with the fermion answer. Treating the theory perturbatively, we show that each term in the perturbation expansion is UV divergent. However the series can be resummed, yielding the exact finite result. Our results indicate that the finiteness of the entanglement entropy for higher dimensional string theories is non-perturbative as well, with the scale provided by the Newton constant., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures

In gauge/gravity duality, matrix degrees of freedom on the gauge theory side play important roles for the emergent geometry. In this paper, we discuss how the entanglement on the gravity side can be described as the entanglement between matrix degrees of freedom. Our approach, which we call 'matrix entanglement', is different from 'target-space entanglement' proposed and discussed recently by several groups. We consider several classes of quantum states to which our approach can play important roles. When applied to fuzzy sphere, matrix entanglement can be used to define the usual spatial entanglement in two-brane or five-brane world-volume theory nonperturbatively in a regularized setup. Another application is to a small black hole in AdS5*S5 that can evaporate without being attached to a heat bath, for which our approach suggests a gauge theory origin of the Page curve. We discus Thermofield Double QFT at real time, in the large $N$ limit. First, we establish a (dynamical) symmetry which we argue holds in general on the real time portion of the Schwinger-Kelydish contour. At large $N$ this symmetry is seen to generate a one parameter degeneracy of stationary collective solutions. The construction is explicitly worked out on the example of $O(N)$ vector QFT. In this work we revisit the problem of solving multi-matrix systems through numerical large $N$ methods. The framework is a collective, loop space representation which provides a constrained optimization problem, addressed through master-field minimization. This scheme applies both to multi-matrix integrals ($c=0$ systems) and multi-matrix quantum mechanics ($c=1$). The complete fluctuation spectrum is also computable in the above scheme, and is of immediate physical relevance in the later case. The complexity (and the growth of degrees of freedom) at large $N$ have stymied earlier attempts and in the present work we present significant improvements in this regard. The (constrained) minimization and spectrum calculations are easily achieved with close to $10^4$ variables, giving solution to Migdal-Makeenko, and collective field equations. Considering the large number of dynamical (loop) variables and the extreme nonlinearity of the problem, high precision is obtained when confronted with solvable cases. We present a systematic procedure to extract the dynamics of the low energy soft mode in SYK type models with a single energy scale $J$ and emergent reparametrization symmetry in the IR. This is given in the framework of the perturbation theory scheme of arXiv:1608.07567 based on specific (off-shell) breaking of conformal invariance in the UV, adjusted to yield the exact large-$N$ saddle point. While this breaking formally vanishes on-shell, it has a non-trivial effect on correlation functions and the effective action. In particular, it leads to the Schwarzian action with a specific coupling to bi-local matter. The method is applied to the evaluation of $O(1)$ corrections to the correlation function of bi-locals. As a byproduct we confirm precise agreement with the explicit, symmetry breaking procedure. We provide a verification in the large $q$ limit (Liouville theory), where the correlators can be calculated exactly at all length scales. In this case, our scheme illuminates how the enhanced $O(J)$ and the subleading $O(1)$ contributions originate from the Schwarzian dynamics of the soft mode and its interaction with $h=2$ (bi-local) matter., Comment: 54 pages, 4 figures

We study some general properties of coupled quantum systems. We consider simple interactions between two copies of identical Hamiltonians such as the SYK model, Pauli spin chains with random magnetic field and harmonic oscillators. Such couplings make the ground states close to the thermofield double states of the uncoupled Hamiltonians. For the coupled SYK model, we push the numerical computation further towards the thermodynamic limit so that an extrapolation in the size of the system is possible. We find good agreement between the extrapolated numerical result and the analytic result in the large-$q$ limit. We also consider the coupled gauged matrix model and vector model, and argue that the deconfinement is associated with the loss of the entanglement, similarly to the previous observation for the coupled SYK model. The understanding of the microscopic mechanism of the confinement/deconfinement transition enables us to estimate the quantum entanglement precisely, and backs up the dual gravity interpretation which relates the deconfinement to the disappearance of the wormhole. In the weak coupling limit of ${\rm SU}(N)$ Yang-Mills theory and the ${\rm O}(N)$ vector model, explicit state counting allows us to demonstrate the existence of a partially deconfined phase: $M$ of $N$ colors deconfine, and $\frac{M}{N}$ gradually grows from zero (confinement) to one (complete deconfinement). We point out that the mechanism admits a simple interpretation in the form of spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry. In terms of the dual gravity theory, such breaking occurs during the formation of a black hole. We speculate whether the breaking and restoration of gauge symmetry can serve as an alternative definition of the deconfinement transition in theories without center symmetry, such as QCD. We present in detail the basic ingredients contained in bi-local holography, representing a constructive scheme for reconstructing AdS bulk theories in Vectorial/AdS duality. We consider the question of identifying the bulk space-time of the SYK model. Focusing on the signature of emergent space-time of the (Euclidean) model, we explain the need for non-local (Radon-type) transformations on external legs of $n$-point Green's functions. This results in a dual theory with Euclidean AdS signature with additional leg-factors. In \url{arXiv:1704.07208} it was shown that the spectrum and bilocal propagator of SYK model with four fermion interactions can be realized as a three dimensional model in $AdS_2 \times S^1/Z_2$ with nontrivial boundary conditions in the additional dimension. In this paper we show that a similar picture holds for generalizations of the SYK model with $q$-fermion interactions. The 3D realization is now given on a space whose metric is conformal to $AdS_2 \times S^1/Z_2$ and is subject to a non-trivial potential in addition to a delta function at the center of the interval. It is shown that a Horava-Witten compactification reproduces the exact SYK spectrum and a non-standard propagator between points which lie at the center of the interval exactly agrees with the bilocal propagator. As $q \rightarrow \infty$, the wave function of one of the modes at the center of the interval vanish as $1/q$, while the others vanish as $1/q^2$, in a way consistent with the fact that in the SYK model only one of the modes contributes to the bilocal propagator in this limit., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure

We show that the spectrum of the SYK model can be interpreted as that of a 3D scalar coupled to gravity. The scalar has a mass which is at the Breitenholer-Freedman bound of AdS$_2$, and subject to a delta function potential at the center of the interval along the third direction. This, through Kaluza-Klein procedure on AdS$_2 \times (S^1)/Z_2$, generates the spectrum reproducing the bi-local propagator at strong coupling. We study interacting features of $S_N$ Orbifold CFTs. Concentrating on characters (associated with $S_N$ Orbifold primaries) we first formulate a novel procedure for evaluating them through $GL(\infty)_+$ tracing. The result is a polynomial formula which we show gives results equivalent to those found by Bantay. We study the Thermo-field realization of the duality between the Rindler-AdS higher spin theory and $O(N)$ vector theory. The CFT represents a decoupled pair of free $O(N)$ vector field theories. Employing the world line spinning particle picture we discuss the appearance of several different `gauges' which we use to gain a deeper explanation of the Collective/Gravity identification. We discuss transformations and algebraic equivalences between them. For a bulk identification we develop a `gauge independent' representation where all gauge constraints are eliminated. This `gauge reduction' of Higher Spin Gravity demonstrates that the physical content of 4D AdS HS theory is represented by the dynamics of an unconstrained scalar field in 6d. We consider the question of loop corrections (i.e. 1/N) in the vector model/higher spin duality following the recent work of Giombi and Klebanov. The purpose of this paper is to gain further more precise comparison between the two sides of the duality. For CFTs given by 3d O(N) or U(N) vector models we evaluate the leading and one loop partition functions in a variety of geometries. Our calculations are performed in the scheme of collective field theory which was seen in earlier studies to represent a bulk description of Vasiliev higher spin theory. The calculations presented provide data for comparison of small fluctuation determinants giving further evidence for the one-to-one bulk identification between the bi-local and the AdS picture. They also offer insight into the identification of coupling constants G and 1/N of the two descriptions for models based on O(N) symmetry., Comment: 17 pages

For W_N minimal model CFT's at Large N, we formulate a nonlinear field theory of primary operators. A classification of single-trace operators is given first based on which an interacting field theory operating in Fock space is built. A hamiltonian is constructed with the property that it reproduces exactly the spectrum of conformal dimensions of all the primaries. This field theory is characterized by cubic (and quartic) interactions with G=1/N as an interaction parameter. We review some recent work on AdS/CFT duality involving the 3d O(N) Vector Model and AdS4 Higher Spin Gravity. Our construction is based on bi-local collective field theory which provides an off-shell formulation of Higher Spin Gravity with G = 1/N playing the role of a coupling constant. Consequently perturbative and non-perturbative issues of the theory can be studied. For the correspondence based on free CFT's we discuss the nature of bulk 1/N interactions through an S-matrix which is argued to be equal to 1 (Coleman-Mandula theorem). As a consequence in this class of theories nonlinearities are removable, through a nonlinear field transformation which we show at the exact level. We also describe a geometric (Kahler space) framework for the bi-local theory which applies equally simple to Sp(2N) fermions and the de Sitter correspondence. We derive a collective field theory of the singlet sector of the Sp(2N) sigma model. Interestingly the hamiltonian for the bilocal collective field is the same as that of the O(N) model. However, the large-N saddle points of the two models differ by a sign. This leads to a fluctuation hamiltonian with a negative quadratic term and alternating signs in the nonlinear terms which correctly reproduces the correlation functions of the singlet sector. Assuming the validity of the connection between O(N) collective fields and higher spin fields in AdS, we argue that a natural interpretation of this theory is by a double analytic continuation, leading to the dS/CFT correspondence proposed by Anninos, Hartman and Strominger. The bi-local construction gives a map into the bulk of de Sitter space-time. Its geometric pseudospin-representation provides a framework for quantization and definition of the Hilbert space. We argue that this is consistent with finite N grassmanian constraints, establishing the bi-local representation as a nonperturbative framework for quantization of Higher Spin Gravity in de Sitter space., Comment: 1 figure

Following the work of Maldacena and Zhiboedov, we study the implementation of the Coleman-Mandula theorem in the free O(N)/Higher Spin correspondence. In the bi-local framework we first define an S-matrix for scattering of collective dipoles. Its evaluation in the case of free UV fixed point theory leads to the result S=1 stated in the title. We also present an appropriate field transformation that is seen to transform away all the non-linear 1/N interactions of this theory. We formulate a first quantized construction of the AdS_{d+1}/CFT_d correspondence using the bi-local representation of the free d-dimensional large N vector model. The earlier reconstruction of AdS_4 higher-spin gravity provides a scheme where the AdS spacetime (and higher-spin fields) are given by the composite bi-local fields. The underlying first quantized, world-sheet picture is extracted in the present work and generalized to any dimension. A higher-spin AdS particle model is shown to emerge from the collective bi-particle system of Minkowski particles through a canonical transformation. We pursue the construction of higher-spin theory in AdS_4 from CFT_3 of the O(N) vector model in terms of canonical collective fields. In null plane quantization an exact map is established between the two spaces. The coordinates of the AdS_4 space-time are generated from the collective coordinates of the bi-local field. We review some recent work and techniques for constructing dynamical string solutions in AdS spacetime. These solutions generalize the folded string and multi-spike solutions of GKP and Kruczenski. The methods developed for constructing these dynamical solutions are based on Pohlmeyer reduction to integrable sinh-Gordon type equations. The integrability of the equations is seen as the crucial tool for reconstruction of the string configurations. We examine the Hamiltonian structures of some Calogero-Moser and Ruijsenaars-Schneider N-body integrable models. According to the Alday-Maldacena program the strong coupling limit of Super Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes is given by minimal area surfaces in AdS spacetime with a boundary consisting of a momentum space polygon. The string equations in AdS systematically reduce to coupled Toda type equations whose Euclidean classical solutions are then of direct relevance. While in the simplest case of AdS_3 exact solutions were known from earlier studies of the sinh-Gordon equation, there exist at present no similar exact forms for the generalized Toda equations related to AdS_d with d>=4. In this paper we develop a series method for the solution to those equations and evaluate their contribution to the finite piece of the worldsheet area. We construct a general class of solutions for a classical string in AdS_3 spacetime. The construction is based on a Pohlmeyer type reduction, with the sinh-Gordon model providing the general N-soliton solutions. The corresponding exact spiky string configurations are then reconstructed through the inverse scattering method. We pursue the question of multi-magnon dynamics, focusing on the simplest case of magnons moving on RxS2 and working at the semiclassical level. Through a Pohlmeyer reduction, the problem reduces to another well known integrable field theory, the sine-Gordon model, which can be exactly described through an N-body model of Calogero type. The two theories coincide at the level of equations of motion, but physical quantities like the energies (of magnons and solitons) and the associated phase shifts are different. We start from the equivalence of the two systems at the level of equations of motion and require that the new (string theory) model reproduces the correct magnon energies and the phase shift, both of which differ from the soliton case. From the comparison of energies we suggest a Hamiltonian, and from requiring the correct phase shift we are led to a nontrivial Poisson structure representing the magnons., Comment: 19 pages, no figures

In this contribution we describe some soliton based techniques for generating classical AdS string solutions. The methods introduced are useful for further understanding of rotating AdS configurations with spikes which correspond to higher twist operators in SYM theory. The main identification (accomplished in arXiv:0712.1193) between solitons and string spikes is reviewed and extended. We consider the question of reconstructing (cubic) SUGRA interactions in AdS/CFT. The method we introduce is based on the matrix model maps (MMP) which were previously successfully employed at the linearized level. The strategy is to start with the map for 1/2 BPS configurations which is exactly known (to all orders) in the hamiltonian framework. We then use the extension of the matrix model map with the corresponding Ward identities to completely specify the interaction. We use a Pohlmeyer type reduction to generate classical string solutions in AdS spacetime. In this framework we describe a correspondence between spikes in AdS_3 and soliton profiles of the sinh-Gordon equation. The null cusp string solution and its closed spinning string counterpart are related to the sinh-Gordon vacuum. We construct classical string solutions corresponding to sinh-Gordon solitons, antisolitons and breathers by the inverse scattering technique. We demonstrate the applicability of the dressing method to the problem of constructing new classical solutions for Euclidean worldsheets in anti-de Sitter space. The motivation stems from recent work of Alday and Maldacena, who studied gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling using a generalization of a particular worldsheet found by Kruczenski whose edge traces a path composed of light-light segments on the boundary of AdS. We dress this `giant gluon' to find new solutions in AdS_3 and AdS_5 whose edges trace out more complicated, timelike curves on the boundary. We argue from two complementary viewpoints of Holography that the 2-point correlation functions of 1/2-BPS multi-trace operators in the large-N (planar) limit are nothing but the (Wick-rotated) S-matrix elements of c=1 matrix model. On the bulk side, we consider an Euclideanized version of the so-called bubbling geometries and show that the corresponding droplets reach the conformal boundary. Then the scattering matrix of fluctuations of the droplets gives directly the two-point correlators through the GKPW prescription. On the Yang-Mills side, we show that the two-point correlators of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic operators are essentially equivalent with the transformation functions between asymptotic in- and out-states of c=1 matrix model. Matrix models and related Spin-Calogero-Sutherland models are of major relevance in a variety of subjects, ranging from condensed matter physics to QCD and low dimensional string theory. They are characterized by integrability and exact solvability. Their continuum, field theoretic representations are likewise of definite interest. In this paper we describe various continuum, field theoretic representations of these models based on bosonization and collective field theory techniques. We study in more detail the dynamics of chiral primaries of the D1/D5 system. From the CFT given by the $S_{n}$ orbifold a study of correlators resulted in an interacting (collective) theory of chiral operators. In $AdS_{3}\times S^{3}$ SUGRA we concentrate on general 1/2 BPS configurations described in terms of a fundamental string .We first establish a correspondence with the linerized field fluctuations and then present the nonlinear analysis. We evaluate in detail the symplectic form of the general degrees of freedom in Sugra and confirm the appearance of chiral bosons. We then discuss the apearance of interactions and the cubic vertex,in correspondence with the $S_{N}$ collective field theory representation.

We discuss an extension of a map between between BPS states and free fermions. The extension involves states associated with a full two matrix problem which are constructed using a sequence of integral equations. A two parameter set of matrix model eigenstates is then related to states in SUGRA. Their wavefunctions are characterized by nontrivial dependence on the radial coordinate of AdS and of the Sphere respectively. We compute $e^{-AN}$ corrections to the Gross-Taylor 1/N expansion of the paritition function of two-dimensional SU(N) and U(N) Yang Mills theory. We find a very similar structure of mixing between holomorphic and anti-holomorphic sectors as that described by Vafa for the 1/N expansion. Some of the non-perturbative terms are suggestive of D-strings wrapping the $T^2$ of the 2dYM but blowing up into a fuzzy geometry by the Myers effect in the directions transverse to the $T^2$., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures ; v2,3 -refs added

We analyze the possibility of extracting S matrices on pp waves and flat space from SYM correlators. For pp waves, there is a subtlety in defining S matrices, but we can certainly obtain observables. Only extremal correlators survive the pp wave limit. A first quantized string approach is inconclusive, producing in the simplest form results that vanish in the pp wave limit. We define a procedure to get S matrices from SYM correlators, both for flat space and for pp waves, generalizing a procedure due to Giddings. We analyze nonrenormalized correlators: 2 and 3 -point functions and extremal correlators. For the extremal 3-point function, the SYM and AdS results for the S matrix match for the angular dependence, but the energy dependence doesn't., Comment: 42 pages, latex (25 pages+Appendices)
