- Abstract
An increase in invasive group A Streptococcusinfections was reported in 2022, associated with intense respiratory virus circulation. We describe a marked increase of noninvasive group A Streptococcusinfections. Although the rise coincided with epidemics of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza, it continued after detection of these viruses fell to low levels, suggesting that other factors have contributed to this epidemiologic change.

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE: Multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants have emerged over the COVID-19 pandemic. The implications for COVID-19 severity in children worldwide are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the dominant circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) were associated with differences in COVID-19 severity among hospitalized children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Clinical data from hospitalized children and adolescents (younger than 18 years) who were SARS-CoV-2 positive were obtained from 9 countries (Australia, Brazil, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, UK, and the US) during 3 different time frames. Time frames 1 (T1), 2 (T2), and 3 (T3) were defined to represent periods of dominance by the ancestral virus, pre-Omicron VOCs, and Omicron, respectively. Age groups for analysis were younger than 6 months, 6 months to younger than 5 years, and 5 to younger than 18 years. Children with an incidental positive test result for SARS-CoV-2 were excluded. EXPOSURES: SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization during the stipulated time frame. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The severity of disease was assessed by admission to intensive care unit (ICU), the need for ventilatory support, or oxygen therapy. RESULTS: Among 31 785 hospitalized children and adolescents, the median age was 4 (IQR 1-12) years and 16 639 were male (52.3%). In children younger than 5 years, across successive SARS-CoV-2 waves, there was a reduction in ICU admission (T3 vs T1: risk ratio [RR], 0.56; 95% CI, 0.42-0.75 [younger than 6 months]; RR, 0.61, 95% CI; 0.47-0.79 [6 months to younger than 5 years]), but not ventilatory support or oxygen therapy. In contrast, ICU admission (T3 vs T1: RR, 0.39, 95% CI, 0.32-0.48), ventilatory support (T3 vs T1: RR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.27-0.51), and oxygen therapy (T3 vs T1: RR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.32-0.70) decreased across SARS-CoV-2 waves in children 5 years to younger than 18 years old. The results were consistent when data were restricted to unvaccinated children. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study provides valuable insights into the impact of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs on the severity of COVID-19 in hospitalized children across different age groups and countries, suggesting that while ICU admissions decreased across the pandemic in all age groups, ventilatory and oxygen support generally did not decrease over time in children aged younger than 5 years. These findings highlight the importance of considering different pediatric age groups when assessing disease severity in COVID-19.

GERMPLASM , *CULTIVARS , *EUTECTIC reactions , *COLD (Temperature) , *EUTECTICS , *PLANT species , *FERTILITY preservation - Abstract
Human and animal cells are extremely important for research and many medical applications; however, they do not survive long-term storage with simple cooling or freezing. On the other hand, the increase in world's population along with the changes in feeding behaviors has led to the establishment of new plant varieties. Several plant species are endangered and germplasm conservation is far from developed, hence the search for new cryoprotectant agents became crucial. The metabolites produced by animals and plants to survive extreme cold temperatures served as starting point for the development of natural cryoprotectants. Natural Deep Eutectic Systems (NADES) emerged as alternative solvents and several reports show their low toxicity profile and biodegradability. The components present in organisms that survive extreme cold are potential candidates to prepare a wide variety of NADES. This review exploits NADES' potential as well, as their components, as new alternative cryoprotectant agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The teacher’s approaches to teaching, understood as a metacognitive relationship between the inherent intention to the task of teaching, and the strategies used to implement it, constitute a study object of an important research body. It is centered in the teacher, and his teaching techniques, and is being developed since 1990. This research allowed us to identify two distinct approaches towards teaching: one approach oriented towards the transmission of information, where the role of the teacher is the focus (transmissive approach), and another oriented towards the conceptual deduction of information where the role is focused on the student (comprehensive approach). Studies carried out throughout the last years, indicates that the nature of these two approaches towards teaching is responsive to the context, so they are not a characteristic of the teacher, or, of the way he teaches in general, but rather one way he may follow in a particular teaching situation. Based on these evidences, the corpus of research on the teacher’s approaches to teaching, has been trying to identify the variables that most influence the teachers, such that they adopt a more transmissive or a more comprehensive approach in a particular educational scenario. Understanding this mechanism of choice, as well as the variables that may influence it, assumes major relevance, since there are theoretical and empirical evidences that the teacher’s approaches to teaching has great impact on the student’s approaches to learning, and, furthermore, on the quality of their learning. Our research aimed to improve the knowledge about the factors that intervene in the adoption of the teacher’s approach to teaching, analyzing the impact of teacher’s self-efficacy in the process. Simultaneously, we aimed to verify the contribution of a set of variables related to the teaching process—satisfaction with the work, the control over the teaching process, the relationship with the students, and the relationship with the school administration—in the teacher’s self-efficacy, and, via this variable, the possible influence on the teacher’s approaches to teaching. To achieve that, a theoretical model was proposed, based on the hypothetical relations between variables. Thus, a Structural equations modelling was fit using data collected from 779 teachers from 3.º CEB of Portuguese schools. The instruments used in this study, were all built for this purpose, with the exception of the teacher’s approaches’ to teaching. The results obtained, show good adjustment fit between the model and the data matrix, allowing us to confirm that, indeed the model is a plausible representation of the relationship between these variables. We verified that (i) satisfaction with the work, the control over the teaching process, the relationship with the students, and the relationship with the school administration significantly and positively influence the teacher’s self-efficacy reported by the teachers; (ii) teacher’s self-efficacy significantly and positively influences the adoption of a teacher’s approach to teaching, both for the “transmissive approach” and the “comprehensive approach”. However, the latter holds a stronger relationship; (iii) the variables and its relationships, help us to explain the variance of the teacher’s approaches to teaching. Thus, the scientific knowledge on this subject is improved; (iv) the instruments of measure built in this research showed adequate psychometric qualities, making it possible to reuse it. These results were discussed using the theoretical assumptions that guided the study. The implications of this study in future educational purposes were discussed, as well as suggestions for future research on the field.

The present study, is aimed at, mapping out the schooling and vocational orientation of teenagers with Asperger’s Syndrome, during their transition from the ninth to tenth forms and from the tenth to the eleventh forms, at understanding the different personal and contextual aspects implied in the vocational options, this is to say, understanding how the Psychology and Orientation Services (POS), make the most of teenagers with Asperger’s Syndrome when orientation guidance is required. The first part of the thesis critically reviews the conceptual and empirical investigation on Asperger’s Syndrome, whist a disorder of the Autism Spectrum. The DSM-IV-TR (2002) and the latest DSM-5 (2013) were considered and so were specialized authors, such as Attwood (2011) Faherty (2011), Wagner (2011), Iland (2011), Wrobel (2011) , Snyder (2011), Grandin (2011) e Myers (2011). Assuming that youngsters with Asperger’s Syndrome normally have a specific skill and the vocational and relational dimension that this skill can hold whist a possible means of overcoming barriers, namely, in areas such as relationships and communication with others in an academic setting is concerned was analysed. For this purpose the study case methodology was used, with only one subject. The subject’s pedagogical reality was characterized (background, school, family and subject) and assessment was made through surveys conducted by questionnaires and interviews thus determining if the young lady could through her specific skill, drawing, on the one hand communicate and enhance skills that would otherwise have been compromised, this is to say, social interaction, socialization and cognition, on the other hand if her vocational option was taken into account. Five investigation questions were outlined, the results analysed and the conclusion being that adequate vocational guidance for teenagers with Asperger’s Syndrome, is one where their specific skill is respected and maximized; when the POS is ineffective the team of teachers may contribute to the shaping of the youngers schooling; that both teachers and peers emphasise and reinforce the importance that drawing whist a form of communication and as a useful tool in learning; and that teenagers with Asperger’s Syndrome unique characteristics, are a worthy asset when making school choices and deciding vocational areas.

This study aims to analyze the behavior of portuguese version of Personality Research Form (PRF; Teixeira, 2007) in Recruitment and Selection context. Still, we intended to investigate the effect of gender, age (until 25 years old, 25-29 years and 30 or more years old) and educational levels (secondary education/ university attendance or higher education). For this propose, the inventory was administered to a total of 291 individuals who were searching for a new job opportunity in a human resources company. After the exclusion of some items for having very low variability in responses, the results revealed that the scales Dominance, Endurance, Exhibition, Harmavoidance, Impulsivity, Order and Social Recognition have good levels of internal consistency. We also observed a significant interaction effect between gender and age in Harmavoidance, showing that women have a greater tendency to avoid risks than men, and the major differences are registered in persons aged 30 years or more. The results also indicate an interaction effect between age and educational levels in Achievement and Dominance scales. In Achievement, there are differences in individuals aged 25 to 29 years in which those with secondary education are more accomplished than those with higher education. For the Dominance scale, we highlight the significant differences found among individuals aged 25 years, of which those with higher qualifications indicate that they are more dominant than those with secondary qualifications.

In this work, we propose the utilization of scCO
2 to impregnate ibuprofen into the mcl-PHA matrix produced by Pseudomonas chlororaphis subs. aurantiaca (DSM 19603). The biopolymer has adhesive properties, is biocompatible and has a melting temperature of 45 °C. Several conditions, namely, pressure (15 and 20 MPa) and impregnation time (30 min, 1 h and 3 h) were tested. The highest ibuprofen content (90.8 ± 6.5 mg of ibuprofen/gPHA ) was obtained at 20 MPa and 40 °C, for 1 h, with an impregnation rate of 89 mg/(g·h). The processed mcl-PHA samples suffered a plasticization, as shown by the decrease of 6.5 °C in the Tg , at 20 MPa. The polymer's crystallinity was also affected concomitantly with the matrices' ibuprofen content. For all the impregnation conditions tested the release of ibuprofen from the biopolymer followed a type II release profile. This study has demonstrated that the mcl-PHA produced by P. chlororaphis has a great potential for the development of novel topical drug delivery systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
