Abstract

COVID-19 has revealed familiar problems in health economics and cost-benefit analysis and the "tragic choices" that sometimes must be made. Policymakers frequently have to attach a monetary value to a human life based on the number of years that a person might have left to live and that life's quality (the concept behind "QALYs"). It is reasonable to acknowledge that the mortality rates for those with Covid-19 are higher for elderly people and those with pre-existing health problems. It is also important to recognise the "identifiable victim" problem, which may lead policymakers to focus too much on those at risk of dying from COVID-19 and not enough on less visible costs. While there may be a risk of over-estimating the economic and fiscal costs of the lockdown itself, as the economy was already weakening before the lockdown began and many people were changing their behaviour without state direction, there is ample evidence that the lockdown has compounded the economic hit. This recession is unprecedented. GDP will have fallen by a relatively large amount in a relatively short period of time. But the economy could still rebound quickly, as the threat recedes. A temporary pause would be less costly than a prolonged slump. However, the longer the lockdown remains in place, the greater the margin by which the costs are likely to outweigh the benefits and risk to make the damage permament. It may still be right to focus on the impact on health, rather than any short-term economic costs. Yet the balance is shifting even on this score, given that patients are not getting treated for other conditions and younger people who are missing out on education and job opportunities.

Abstract

We investigated the set of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are highly correlated with 20 renal cancer (RCC) susceptibility regions identified by Genome-wide Association Study (GWAS). Together extensive fine-mapping and in silico functional analyses, based on publicly available resources, we used an integrated approach to pursue regulatory elements in which one or more variant allele could confer differential functional activity. To this end, we conducted an initial screening Massively Parallel Reporter Assay (MPRA), followed by three additional approaches: 1. Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin (ATAC-seq); 2. RCC eQTL analysis;3. Capture-HiC. We confirmed the effects reported for three regions (8q24, 11q13 and 12p12). We selected 784 SNPs with an r2>0.4 or D’>0.5 and MAF Citation Format: Leandro M. Abstract

This study examined the adhesive interface created by Filtek Silorane Adhesive System (SIL, 3M ESPE, USA) using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The HL thickness of the adhesive interface created by SIL was comparable with data previously reported on self-etch adhesives, while the adhesive layer was considerably thicker. As previous investigations revealed that high DC is a fundamental pre-requisite for the stability of the resin bond over time, the DC results of the present study support the hypothesis that optimal stability of SIL within the HL can be obtained. However, further studies are needed to investigate the mechanical properties of the hybrid layer created by SIL and its stability over time.

Abstract

We report on a study of inclusive $B^-$ and $\bar{B}^0$ meson decays to ${D^0 X}$, ${\bar{D}^0 X}$, ${D^+ X}$, ${D^- X}$, ${D_s^+ X}$, ${D_s^- X}$, ${\Lambda_c^+ X}$, ${\bar{\Lambda}_c^- X}$, based on a sample of 231 million $B\bar{B}$ events recorded with the BABAR detector at the $\Upsilon{(4S)}$ resonance. Events are selected by completely reconstructing one $B$ and searching for a reconstructed charm particle in the rest of the event. From the measured branching fractions of these decays, we infer the number of charm and anti-charm particles per $\bar{B}$ decay, separately for charged and neutral parents. We derive the total charm yield per $B^-$ decay, $n_c^- = 1.202 \pm 0.023\pm 0.040^{+0.035}_{-0.029} $, and per $\bar{B}^0$ decay, $n_c^0 = 1.193 \pm 0.030\pm 0.034^{+0.044}_{-0.035}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third reflects the charm branching-fraction uncertainties.
