The spatial heterogeneity of soil properties has a significant impact on crop growth, making it difficult to adopt site-specific crop management practices. Traditional laboratory-based analyses are costly, and data extrapolation for mapping soil properties using high-resolution imagery becomes a computationally expensive procedure, taking days or weeks to obtain accurate results using a desktop workstation. To overcome these challenges, cloud-based solutions such as Google Earth Engine (GEE) have been used to analyze complex data with machine learning algorithms. In this study, we explored the feasibility of designing and implementing a digital soil mapping approach in the GEE platform using high-resolution reflectance imagery derived from a thermal infrared and multispectral camera Altum (MicaSense, Seattle, WA, USA). We compared a suite of multispectral-derived soil and vegetation indices with in situ measurements of physical-chemical soil properties in agricultural lands in the Peruvian Mantaro Valley. The prediction ability of several machine learning algorithms (CART, XGBoost, and Random Forest) was evaluated using R2, to select the best predicted maps (R2 > 0.80), for ten soil properties, including Lime, Clay, Sand, N, P, K, OM, Al, EC, and pH, using multispectral imagery and derived products such as spectral indices and a digital surface model (DSM). Our results indicate that the predictions based on spectral indices, most notably, SRI, GNDWI, NDWI, and ExG, in combination with CART and RF algorithms are superior to those based on individual spectral bands. Additionally, the DSM improves the model prediction accuracy, especially for K and Al. We demonstrate that high-resolution multispectral imagery processed in the GEE platform has the potential to develop soil properties prediction models essential in establishing adaptive soil monitoring programs for agricultural regions.

We assessed the association between measures of dynamic visual acuity and a multiple object tracking task in physically active young adults. Ninety-four young adults performed the dynamic visual acuity and multiple object tracking tasks. Dynamic visual acuity was measured for horizontal and random walk motion paths at four target speeds (5, 10, 20, and 30°/s). For the multiple object tracking task, participants had to track three out of eight balls for 10 s, and the object speed was adjusted by a staircase procedure. We found that multiple object tracking performance was associated with better identification of horizontally and randomly moving targets in the dynamic visual acuity test ( p 0.170 in all cases). This study provides novel insights into the association between the ability to identify horizontally and randomly moving targets and track multiple objects. Future studies are needed to determine the potential utility of dynamic visual acuity for talent identification and predicting sports performance in real-game situations.

Purpose: The ±2.00 D accommodative facility test presents several limitations, in- cluding the lack of objective information and inherent characteristics such as ver- gence/accommodative conflict, change in apparent size of the image, subjective criteria for judging blur and motor reaction time. By using free-space viewing con- ditions and an open-field autorefractor to monitor the refractive state, we exam- ined the impact of manipulating these factors on the qualitative and quantitative assessment of accommodative facility. Methods: Twenty-five healthy young adults (24.5 ± 4.5 years) took part in this study. Participants performed three accommodative facility tests (adapted flipper, 4D free-space viewing and 2.5D free-space viewing) under both monocular and binocular conditions in random order. A binocular open-field autorefractor was used to assess the accommodative response continuously, and these data were used to characterise accommodative facility quantitatively and qualitatively. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the three testing methods both quantitatively (p < 0.001) and qualitatively (p = 0.02). For the same accommodative demand, a lower number of cycles was obtained for the adapted flipper condition in comparison with the 4D free-space viewing test (corrected p-value < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.78). However, this comparison did not reach statisti- cal significance for qualitative measures of accommodative facility (corrected p- value = 0.82, Cohen's d 0.05). Conclusions: These data provide evidence that the qualitative assessment of ac- commodative facility is not influenced by the inherent limitations of the ±2.00 D flipper test. The use of qualitative outcomes by incorporating an open-field au- torefractor allows examiners to increase the validity of the accommodative facility test in both clinical and research settings.

Objectives A variety of factors are known to mediate on the intraocular pressure (IOP) response to resistance training. However, the influence of the body position adopted during resistance training on IOP remain unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the IOP response to the bench press exercise at three levels of intensity when performed in supine and seated positions. Methods Twenty-three physically active healthy young adults (10 men and 13 women) performed 6 sets of 10 repetitions against the 10-RM (repetition maximum) load during the bench press exercise against three levels of intensity (high intensity: 10-RM load; medium intensity: 50% of the 10-RM load; and control: no external load) and while adopting two different body positions (supine and seated). A rebound tonometer was employed to measure IOP in baseline conditions (after 60 s in the corresponding body position), after each of the 10 repetitions, and after 10 s of recovery. Results The body position adopted during the execution of the bench press exercise significantly affected the changes in IOP (p < 0.001, ηp 2 = 0.83), with the seated position providing lower increases in IOP levels compared to the supine position. There was an association between IOP and exercise intensity, with greater IOP values in the more physically demanding conditions (p < 0.001, ηp 2 = 0.80). Conclusions The use of seated positions, instead of supine positions, for the execution of resistance training should be prioritized for maintaining more stable IOP levels. This set of findings incorporates novel insights into the mediating factors on the IOP response to resistance training. Purpose: The use of swimming goggles (SG) has demonstrated to alter different ocular parameters, however, the impact of wearing SG on the tear film stability remains unknown. The main objective of this study was to determine the short-term effects of wearing SG on tear film surface quality break-up time (TFSQ-BUT). Methods: Twenty-eight young healthy adults (14 men and 14 women) wore a drilled SG, and TFSQ-BUT was measured before, during and after SG use. Dynamic-area high-speed videokeratoscopy was used for the non-invasive assessment of TFSQ-BUT. Results: TFSQ-BUT was significantly reduced while SG wear in comparison to the baseline measurement (4.8 ± 4.5 s vs. 8.8 ± 6.9 s; corrected p-value = 0.017, d = 0.57, mean difference = 4.0 [0.6, 7.3]; 45% reduction). Immediately after SG removal, TFSQ-BUT rapidly recovered baseline levels (8.2 ± 5.9 s vs. 8.8 ± 6.9 s; corrected p-value = 0.744). The impact of wearing SG on TFSQ-BUT were independent of the gender of the participants (p = 0.934). Conclusion: The use of SG induces a TFSQ-BUT reduction, with these changes returning to baseline levels immediately after SG removal. These data may be of relevance for the management of dry eye patients, who need to avoid circumstances that exacerbate tear film instability. Nevertheless, these results must be interpreted with caution since the experiment did not entirely mimic real-life conditions (e.g., eye cup piece drilled, time of exposure, environmental conditions). Future studies should consider the inclusion of dry eye patients and older individual in order to explore the generalizability of these findings.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar el proceso de introducción de la libre designación en la Escala de funcionarios de habilitación nacional, y reflexionar sobre la incompatibilidad de este sistema de provisión excepcional de puestos de trabajo con la independencia que reclama el ejercicio por estos funcionarios de las funciones reservadas a ellos encomendadas. La existencia del peculiar régimen jurídico de los secretarios, interventores y tesoreros en nuestra función pública local, se fundamenta en la garantía de independencia y objetividad en el ejercicio de unas funciones de control que se califican como necesarias en todas las Corporaciones locales. Estos funcionarios no ejercen funciones propias de la ejecución de políticas públicas locales, sino ligadas a la actividad de control de legalidad, fiscalización, manejo y custodia de fondos públicos y de recaudación; funciones a todas luces incompatibles con un mecanismo de provisión en el que prima la confianza política, y en el que el nombramiento y el cese recae en la decisión discrecional del órgano político a quien fiscalizan.

La participación del alumnado universitario en su evaluación se entiende como una oportunidad para mejorar la implicación de los estudiantes en su aprendizaje y favorecer el desarrollo de habilidades esenciales como la responsabilidad, la reflexión sobre el propio aprendizaje y la autonomía. El objetivo de esta investigación es estudiar la posibilidad de permitir al alumno universitario escoger el medio por el que ser evaluado en una determinada unidad. Para ello se diseñó una tarea individual relacionada con el uso de las nuevas tecnologías para la enseñanza de la lengua extranjera y el alumnado de la asignatura de Metodología de la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera del Grado en Lenguas Modernas de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria durante los cursos 2017/18, 2018/19 y 2019/20 pudo elegir cómo ser evaluado en este tema, escogiendo entre tres medios de evaluación diferentes con tres calificaciones diferentes. Contrariamente a lo esperado, los alumnos escogieron la tarea más compleja. Según los resultados de una encuesta final que contestaron los alumnos del curso 2019/20, las principales razones de dicha elección son la novedad y el desafío personal que implica realizar esta tarea y la conveniencia de diseñar una herramienta necesaria para su futura labor docente. Finalmente, se analizan las páginas web educativas diseñadas por los alumnos atendiendo al modelo para el estudio de géneros digitales de Askehave y Nielsen (2005).

Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Granada / CBUA., Background Acute caffeine ingestion has been associated with improvements in cognitive performance and visual functioning. The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of caffeine intake on dynamic visual acuity (DVA). Methods Twenty-one low caffeine consumers (22.5 +/- 1.6 years) took part in this placebo-controlled, double-blind, and balanced crossover study. In two different days and following a random order, participants ingested either caffeine (4 mg/kg) or placebo, and DVA was measured after 60 min of ingesting the corresponding capsule. A recently developed and validated software (moV& test, V&mp Vision Suite, Waterloo, Canada) was used to assess DVA. Results We found a greater accuracy for both the horizontal and random motion paths of DVA after caffeine ingestion (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In regard to the speed of the response, our data revealed that caffeine intake was associated with a faster reaction time for horizontally (p = 0.012) but not for randomly (p = 0.846) moving targets. Also, participants reported higher levels of perceived activation after consuming caffeine in comparison to placebo (p < 0.001). Conclusions Our data suggest that caffeine intake (i.e., a capsule containing 4 mg/kg) has an ergogenic effect on DVA, which may be of special relevance in real-word contexts that require to accurately and rapidly detect moving targets (e.g., sports, driving, or piloting)., CRUE-CSIC agreement, Springer Nature, Universidad de Granada / CBUA

From the venom of the Bothrops pictus snake, an endemic species from Peru, we recently have described toxins that inhibited platelet aggregation and cancer cell migration. In this work, we characterize a novel P-III class snake venom metalloproteinase, called pictolysin-III (Pic-III). It is a 62 kDa proteinase that hydrolyzes dimethyl casein, azocasein, gelatin, fibrinogen, and fibrin. The cations Mg2+ and Ca2+ enhanced its enzymatic activity, whereas Zn2+ inhibited it. In addition, EDTA and marimastat were also effective inhibitors. The amino acid sequence deduced from cDNA shows a multidomain structure that includes a proprotein, metalloproteinase, disintegrin-like, and cysteine-rich domains. Additionally, Pic-III reduces the convulxin- and thrombin-stimulated platelet aggregation and in vivo, it has hemorrhagic activity (DHM = 0.3 µg). In epithelial cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and Caco-2) and RMF-621 fibroblast, it triggers morphological changes that are accompanied by a decrease in mitochondrial respiration, glycolysis, and ATP levels, and an increase in NAD(P)H, mitochondrial ROS, and cytokine secretion. Moreover, Pic-III sensitizes to the cytotoxic BH3 mimetic drug ABT-199 (Venetoclax) in MDA-MB-231 cells. To our knowledge, Pic-III is the first SVMP reported with action on mitochondrial bioenergetics and may offer novel opportunities for promising lead compounds that inhibit platelet aggregation or ECM–cancer-cell interactions.

Clinical relevance: Caffeine intake has been demonstrated to influence several physiological measures, including some related to eye physiology. The ability to focus at different distances is of paramount importance in real-world situations, and thus, the possible impact of caffeine intake on accommodative facility may have important clinical implications. Background: This placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced crossover study aimed to assess the acute effects of caffeine ingestion on the frequency and precision of the binocular accommodative facility. Methods: Twenty university students (21.9 ± 3.4 years) ingested a capsule of caffeine (4 mg/kg) or placebo (300 mg of corn-starch) on two different days and counterbalanced order. The binocular accommodative facility was objectively assessed, using the WAM-5500 binocular open-field autorefractometer, after 60 min of capsule ingestion (caffeine/placebo). Perceived levels of activation was also assessed in each experimental condition. Results: The ingestion of a single administration of caffeine (~ 4 mg/kg) causes an increase in the number of cycles performed per minute (p = 0.023, Cohen’s d = 0.55), whereas no effects were observed for the mean magnitude of accommodative change between the far and near targets (p = 0.794), and the percentage of incorrect cycles of accommodation and dis-accommodation (p = 0.271 and 0.396, respectively). Participants reported a perceived level of activation of 6.8 ± 1.5 and 7.6 ± 1.8 in the placebo and caffeine conditions, respectively (p = 0.059). Conclusion: Caffeine intake improves quantitative, but not qualitative, measures of accommodative facility. These results corroborate the impact of caffeine on visual function and suggest that this ergogenic effect of caffeine may be used to enhance visual performance in applied situations.

OBJECTIVE There is scarce available evidence on the distribution over time of liver complications emergence in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients who achieve sustained virological response (SVR) with direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-based therapy. Therefore, we aimed at describing the kinetics of liver-related events appearance in this setting. DESIGN A multicentric prospective cohort study. METHODS HCV-monoinfected and HIV/HCV-coinfected patients from GEHEP-011 cohort, whose inclusion criteria were had achieved SVR with DAA-based therapy; liver stiffness prior to starting treatment at least 9.5 kPa; and available liver stiffness measurement at SVR. SVR was considered as the baseline time-point. RESULTS One thousand and thirty-five patients were included, 664 (64%) coinfected with HIV. Before DAA-based therapy, 63 (6.1%) individuals showed decompensated cirrhosis. After SVR, 51 (4.9%) patients developed liver complications. Median (Q1-Q3) time to the emergence of hepatic events was hepatic encephalopathy 11 (7-24) months, ascites 14 (6-29) months, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) 17 (11-42) months and portal hypertension gastrointestinal bleeding (PHGB) 28 (22-38) months (P = 0.152). We define two profiles of liver complications: those emerging earlier (encephalopathy and ascites) and, those occurring continuously during the follow-up (HCC, PHGB) [median (Q1-Q3) time to emergence 12.7 (6.6-28.2) months vs. 25.4 (12.5-41.53) months, respectively (P = 0.026)]. CONCLUSION The vast majority of HCV-infected patients who develop liver complications after reaching SVR with DAA do it within 3 years after SVR time-point. Specifically, hepatic encephalopathy and ascites do not usually emerge after this period. Conversely, HCC and PHGB may occur in longer term. It is critical to identify patients at risk of developing hepatic events to continue performing surveillance for them.

Background Liver stiffness (LS) at sustained viral response (SVR) is strongly associated with a lower incidence of subsequent hepatic events. HIV NNRTIs may have a beneficial impact on fibrogenesis. Objectives Our aim was to analyse the influence of NNRTI-based therapy on the change in LS from starting direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy to achieving SVR in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients. Methods Three hundred and thirteen HIV/HCV-coinfected patients who fulfilled the following criteria were included: (i) had achieved SVR with an IFN-free, DAA-including regimen; (ii) LS ≥9.5 kPa before therapy; (iii) LS measurement available at SVR; (iv) seronegative for HBsAg; and (v) ART containing 2 NRTIs plus either 1 NNRTI or 1 integrase inhibitor (INI) or 1–2 NRTIs plus 1 PI. LS changes were assessed. Results Seventy-four patients received NNRTI-based combinations [53 (71.6%) rilpivirine and 16 (21.6%) efavirenz] and 239 patients received other regimens. At baseline, the median (IQR) LS was 16.7 kPa (11.8–25.6) in the NNRTI group and 17.3 kPa (11.9–27.4) in the non-NNRTI group (P = 0.278). The median (IQR) percentage of LS decrease from baseline to SVR was 35.2% (18.2%–52.3%) for NNRTI-based therapy and 29.5% (10%–45.9%) for PI- or INI-based therapy (P = 0.018). In multivariate analysis, adjusted for sex, age, HCV genotype, NRTI backbone and propensity score for HIV therapy, NNRTI-based regimen use was associated with a higher LS decrease [β = 11.088 (95% CI = 1.67–20.51); P = 0.021]. Conclusions Treatment with NNRTI plus 2 NRTI combinations is associated with a higher LS decline than other ART combinations in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients receiving DAA-based therapy.

There is scientific evidence that an individual's beliefs and/or expectations play a role in the behavioural and physiological response to a given treatment. This study aimed to assess whether the dynamics of the accommodative response and stereoacuity are sensitive to experimentally induced placebo and nocebo effects.Nineteen healthy university students performed three experimental sessions (placebo, nocebo and control) in randomised order, with the dynamics of the accommodative response (magnitude and variability), stereoacuity and subjective measures being assessed in all sessions. For the experimental manipulation, participants ingested an inert capsule that was alleged to have positive (white capsule, placebo condition) or negative (yellow capsule, nocebo conditions) effects on the human physiology. In the control condition, participants did not ingest a capsule.The data revealed that the variability of accommodation was sensitive to experimentally induced placebo and nocebo effects, showing a more stable accommodative response for the placebo compared with the nocebo condition (corrected p-value = 0.04, Cohen's d = 0.60). In addition, better stereoacuity was found with the placebo, compared with the nocebo (corrected p-value = 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.69) and control (corrected p-value = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.59) conditions. Successful experimental manipulation was confirmed by the analysis of subjective perceptions.These findings provide evidence that manipulating expectations about the efficacy of an inert treatment affect the dynamics of the accommodative response (variability of accommodation) and stereoacuity. The results have important applications in both clinical and research outcomes, where individuals´ beliefs/expectations could modulate the visual function.

Virologic failure; Hepatitis C Fracaso virológico; Hepatitis C Fracàs virològic; Hepatitis C Background & Aims Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens provide a cure in >95% of patients with chronic HCV infection. However, in some patients in whom therapy fails, resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) can develop, limiting retreatment options and risking onward resistant virus transmission. In this study, we evaluated RAS prevalence and distribution, including novel NS5A RASs and clinical factors associated with RAS selection, among patients who experienced DAA treatment failure. Methods SHARED is an international consortium of clinicians and scientists studying HCV drug resistance. HCV sequence linked metadata from 3,355 patients were collected from 22 countries. NS3, NS5A, and NS5B RASs in virologic failures, including novel NS5A substitutions, were examined. Associations of clinical and demographic characteristics with RAS selection were investigated. Results The frequency of RASs increased from its natural prevalence following DAA exposure: 37% to 60% in NS3, 29% to 80% in NS5A, 15% to 22% in NS5B for sofosbuvir, and 24% to 37% in NS5B for dasabuvir. Among 730 virologic failures, most were treated with first-generation DAAs, 94% had drug resistance in ≥1 DAA class: 31% single-class resistance, 42% dual-class resistance (predominantly against protease and NS5A inhibitors), and 21% triple-class resistance. Distinct patterns containing ≥2 highly resistant RASs were common. New potential NS5A RASs and adaptive changes were identified in genotypes 1a, 3, and 4. Following DAA failure, RAS selection was more frequent in older people with cirrhosis and those infected with genotypes 1b and 4. Conclusions Drug resistance in HCV is frequent after DAA treatment failure. Previously unrecognized substitutions continue to emerge and remain uncharacterized. Low-intensity aerobic exercise is recommended to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) levels. However, this effect depends on several factors. We found that using an elevation training mask (ETM) during low-intensity aerobic exercise causes an IOP rise.The aim was to assess the influence of wearing an ETM on IOP during low-intensity endurance training.Sixteen physically active young adults (age=23.9±2.9 y) cycled during 30 minutes at 10% of maximal power production with and without an ETM in 2 different days and randomized order. A rebound tonometer was used to measure IOP at baseline, after a warm-up of 5 minutes, during cycling (6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 min), and recovery (5 and 10 min) by rebound tonometry.The use of an ETM significantly affects the IOP behaviour during exercise (P0.001, ηp²=0.66). In the ETM condition, there was an IOP increment during exercise (P0.001, ηp²=0.28) whereas an IOP-lowering effect was observed in the control condition (P0.001, ηp²=0.41). Post hoc comparisons showed that there were greater IOP values during exercise in the ETM condition in comparison to the control condition (average IOP difference=3.7±2.2 mm Hg; corrected P0.01, and the Cohen d's1.10, in all cases).Low-intensity endurance exercise causes an increment in IOP when it is performed wearing an ETM and a decrease in IOP when the air flow is not restricted (control condition). Therefore, the ETM should be discouraged during low-intensity endurance exercise for individuals who need to reduce IOP levels (eg, glaucoma patients or those at risk). However, the external validity of these results needs to be addressed in future studies with the inclusion of glaucoma patients.

The influence of an inflammatory microenvironment on tumorigenesis has been widely accepted. Systemic conditions that favor the onset of an inflammatory landscape predispose the progression of breast cancer. Under obesity conditions, the endocrine function of adipose tissue is one of the main determinants of the production of local and systemic inflammatory mediators. Although these mediators can stimulate tumorigenesis and recruit inflammatory cells, as macrophages, the mechanism involved remains poorly understood. In the present work, we describe that the TNFα treatment of mammary preadipocytes from human normal patients blocks adipose differentiation and promotes the generation of pro-inflammatory soluble factors. The latter stimulate the mobilization of THP-1 monocytes and MCF-7 epithelial cancer cells in an MCP1/CCL2- and mitochondrial-ROS-dependent manner. Together, these results reaffirm the contribution of an inflammatory microenvironment and mtROS in the progression of breast cancer.

Background In the setting of hepatitis C virus (HCV) active infection, liver stiffness (LS)–based strategies identify patients with low risk of developing esophageal variceal bleeding (VB) episodes, in whom unnecessary upper esophagogastroduodenoscopy (UGE) screening can be safely avoided. However, after sustained virological response (SVR), data on the accuracy of the criteria predicting this outcome in HCV-infected patients with cirrhosis, with or without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection, are very limited. Methods This was a multicenter prospective cohort study, where HCV-monoinfected patients and HIV/HCV-coinfected individuals were included if they had (1) SVR with direct-acting antiviral–based therapy; (2) LS ≥9.5 kPa previous to treatment; and (3) LS measurement at the SVR time-point ≥14 kPa. Diagnostic accuracy of HEPAVIR, expanded Baveno VI, and HIV cirrhosis criteria, at the time of SVR, was evaluated. Missed VB episodes, negative predictive values (NPVs), and number of spared UGEs were specifically assessed. Results Four hundred thirty-five patients were included, 284 (65%) coinfected with HIV. Seven (1.6%) patients developed a first episode of VB after SVR. In patients without a previous VB episode, HEPAVIR, expanded Baveno VI and HIV cirrhosis criteria achieved NPV for first VB episode after SVR of 99.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 97.1%–100%), 100% (95% CI 97.8%–100%), and 100% (95% CI 98%–100%) while sparing 45%, 39%, and 44% of UGEs, respectively. When considering HIV coinfection, the performance of the 3 criteria was similar, both in HCV-monoinfected and HIV/HCV-coinfected individuals. Conclusions After SVR, predictive LS-based strategies accurately identify HCV-infected patients, HIV coinfected or not, with low risk of developing VB during follow-up. In these specific patients, using HIV cirrhosis criteria maximize the number of spared UGEs while missing no VB episode.

The article has not been presented in a meeting., Purpose This study aimed to assess the impact of wearing swimming goggles (SG) on corneal biomechanics. Methods Corneal deformation response, central corneal thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP) and biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP) were measured with the Corvis system (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany) in thirtyone healthy young adults while wearing a drilled SG. All measurements were obtained before, at 30 s, 2 min, 3.5 min and 5 min of wearing SG, just after SG removal and after 2 min of SG removal. Results The corneal biomechanics is sensitive to SG wear, observing lower corneal deformability during SG use. Specifically, wearing SG caused an increase in the time and length of the first applanation and radius curvature at the highest concavity, as well as a decrease and in the velocity of the first applanation and time and deformation amplitude of the second applanation (p < 0.001 in all cases). After SG removal, corneal biomechanical parameters showed a rebound-effect, obtaining a higher corneal deformability in comparison with baseline reading (p-corrected < 0.05 in all cases). Additionally, IOP and bIOP significantly increased while wearing SG (p < 0.001 in both cases), whereas CCT remained stable (p = 0.850). Conclusions Wearing SG modifies the biomechanical properties of the cornea, with reduced corneal deformability during SG wear. Purpose: We aimed to assess the impact of drinking water (500 and 1000 mL) on corneal biomechanics and determine the level of association between changes in intraocular pressure and variations in the different biomechanical properties of the cornea. Methods: A total of 39 healthy young adults ingested either 1000 mL (n = 21) or 500 mL (n = 18) of tap water in 5 min. The CorVis ST system was used to assess corneal biomechanics at baseline and at 15, 30, and 45 min after water ingestion. Results: Water drinking induced statistically significant changes in the deformation amplitude (P < 0.001, η² = 0.166), highest concavity time (P = 0.012, η² = 0.093), peak distance (P < 0.001, η² = 0.171), time and velocity of the first applanation (P < 0.001, η² = 0.288 and P = 0.016, η² = 0.087, respectively), and time and velocity of the second applanation (P = 0.030, η² = 0.074 and P = 0.001, η² = 0.132, respectively), being independent of the amount of water ingested (P > 0.05 in all cases). There were significant associations between changes in intraocular pressure and some parameters of corneal biomechanics. Conclusion: Small variations in whole‑body hydration status alter different biomechanical properties of the cornea, with these changes being associated with intraocular pressure levels. These findings indicate that whole‑body hydration status can be considered for the diagnosis and management of different ocular conditions.

A military-specific reaction time (RT) test was developed to explore its reliability and sensitivity to discriminate between military personnel and sport science students. Fifteen male professional Spanish soldiers and 16 male sport science students completed two RT test modalities: military-specific and nonspecific RT tests. For each RT test modality, both the Simple (i.e., one stimulus, one response) and the Go, No-Go RT (i.e., true, and false stimuli, one response) were tested. The military-specific RT test consisted of a video presented through virtual reality glasses of a forest environment in which soldiers would appear from behind different bushes (stimuli) and the response consisted of pressing the button of a gun-shaped mouse (when they saw a soldier pointing a rifle at them). Both Simple and Go, No-Go RT reached acceptable reliability in both populations (coefficient of variation ≤ 9.64%). Military personnel presented a lower RT than sport science students during the military-specific RT test (p ≤ .001), while no differences were obtained during the nonspecific RT test. RT values were not significantly correlated between the military-specific and nonspecific RT tests (r ≤ .02). These findings collectively suggest that the novel military-specific RT test is an ecologically valid alternative to evaluate the information processing abilities of military personnel.

SIGNIFICANCE: The performance of resistance exercise has evidenced to induce abrupt intraocular pressure (IOP) changes, which has been linked to the onset and progression of glaucoma. We found that four different isometric resistance exercises lead to an instantaneous and progressive IOP elevation, with these changes being independent of the type of exercise. PURPOSE: The impact of physical exercise on IOP has demonstrated to be dependent on exercise type and intesity, as well as individuals' characteristics. In this study, we aimed to explore the influence of the load, exercise type, and participant's sex on the IOP behavior during a 2-minute isometric effort. METHODS: Twenty-eight physically active collegiate students performed 2 minutes of isometric exercise in the military press, biceps curl, leg extension, and calf raise exercises against two different loads (high load and low load). Intraocular pressure was measured by rebound tonometry before, during (semicontinuos assessment [24 measurements]), and after 10 seconds of recovery in each of the eight (four exercises × two loads) conditions. RESULTS: We found a statistically significant effect of load (P < .001, np2 = 0.906), with greater IOP values when performing the isometric exercises against heavier loads. There was a positive IOP rise during the execution of isometric exercise in the high-load condition, returning to baseline levels after 10 seconds of passive recovery. The exercise type and participant's sex did not reveal statistically significant differences (P = .33 and P = .56, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our data evidenced an instanteneous and progressive IOP rise during the execution of isometric exercise leading to muscular failure, regardless of the exercise type and participant's sex. After exercise, IOP rapidly retuned to baseline levels (within 10 seconds). The inclusion of glaucoma patients in future studies is guarranteed.

PReCIS:: Greater intraocular pressure (IOP) values are observed when reading in the supine position in comparison with the sitting position, and thus, it should be considered by eye care specialists for the management of glaucoma patients or those at risk. PURPOSE IOP is sensitive to near work and body position, however, the influence of the body position adopted while performing near tasks remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the IOP changes induced by reading on a smartphone in sitting and supine position, and to explore whether these IOP changes differ between men and women. METHODS Twenty-four healthy young adults (12 men and 12 women) read a text on a smartphone placed at 30 cm for 25 minutes while lying down and sitting in 2 different days. A rebound tonometer, which allows assessing IOP in the supine position, was used to measure IOP before reading, during reading (5, 15, and 25 min), and after 5 minutes of recovery. Complementarily, the authors checked the level of sleepiness/alertness before reading, and the perceived levels of fatigue and discomfort after reading. To evaluate the acute effect of caffeine consumption on the accuracy and variability of accommodation, as well as its impact on pupil size and perceived levels of activation.22 university students (21.68 ± 3.67 years old) ingested a capsule of caffeine (4 mg/kg) or placebo (300 mg of corn-starch) in two different days and counterbalanced order. After 30 min of capsule ingestion, we objectively measured the accuracy and variability of accommodation, and pupil size using the WAM-5500 binocular open-field autorefractometer for 2 min at each of the six viewing distances (5 m, 50 cm, 40 cm, 33 cm, 25 cm, and 20 cm). Subjective levels of activation to check the effectiveness of caffeine/placebo manipulation were also reported.We found that after 30 min of caffeine/placebo ingestion, participant perceived higher levels of activation in the caffeine condition (Our data suggest that caffeine consumption reduced the variability of accommodative response and induced pupil dilation. Nevertheless, the accuracy of accommodation was insensitive to caffeine intake. These findings may be explained by the bidirectional relationship between ocular functioning and the nervous system´s state of activation.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the accommodative response and pupillary dynamics while reading passages with different text-background color combinations on an LCD screen. Twenty healthy young adults read fourteen 2-min passages designed with fourteen different color combinations between text and background, while the accommodative and pupil responses were continuously measured with a binocular open-field autorefractometer. Our results revealed that the text-background color combination modulates the accommodative and pupillary dynamics during a 2-minutes reading task. The blue-red combination induced a heightened accommodative response, whereas positive polarities were associated with more variability of the accommodative response and smaller pupil sizes. Participants reported lower perceived ratings of legibility for text-background color combination with lower luminance contrast (white-yellow). The manipulation of text-background color did not have a significant effect on reading speed. These results may have important applications in the design of digital visual interfaces.

There is some controversy about the utility of prescribing blue-blocking filters to mitigate digital eye strain. We found that using commercially available blue-blocking filters was ineffective in reducing orbicularis oculi muscle activity and visual symptomatology during a 30-min reading task from a computer screen.There are some claims that blue-blocking (B-B) filters may be effective in reducing symptoms and signs of digital eye strain. However, recent studies have suggested that there is no sufficient evidence to support their use. This study assessed the short-term effects of a commercially available, B-B filter on orbicularis oculi (OO) muscle activity and symptoms of digital eye strain during the execution of a 30-min reading tas.Twenty-three healthy young adults (22.9 ± 3.2 years of age) performed two reading tasks from a computer screen with or without a B-B filter on two different days. OO muscle activity was recorded by surface electromyography 4-5, 9-10, 14-15, 19-20, 24-25 and 29-30 min into the trial. Participants reported their perceived levels of visual discomfort and activation before and after completing the reading task.A Bayesian analysis favoured the null hypothesis that there was no change in OO muscle activity with or without using the B-B filter (Bayes Factor01 [BF01] = 7.08). Regarding symptomatology, the analysis favoured the time model that reading increased visual fatigue and discomfort but reduced activation levels (BF01 0.33 in all cases). However, our data did not support the alternative model that using B-B filter affected these visual symptoms.The B-B filter did not alter OO muscle activity or visual symptomatology significantly during the execution of a 30-min reading task in asymptomatic subjects. These findings support the idea that B-B filters do not attenuate signs and symptoms of digital eye strain.

Introduction: Dual-focus soft contact lenses for myopia management have demonstrated to be an effective strategy to reduce myopia progression. However, this optical design has been shown to alter visual quality and accommodative function. The aim of this study was to examine the accommodative and behavioural performance during the execution of a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) while wearing dual-focus and single-vision soft contact lenses. Methods: The steady-state accommodative response was recorded with the WAM-5500 binocular open-field autorefractor during the execution of a 10-min PVT at 50 cm either with the dual-focus (MiSight 1-day) or single-vision (Proclear 1-day) soft contact lenses, using a sample of 23 healthy young adults. Each experimental session was performed on two different days in a counterbalanced order. Results: A greater lag of accommodation, variability of accommodation and reaction time was found while wearing dual-focus in comparison with single-vision soft contact lenses (mean differences during the 10-min PVT were 0.58 ± 0.81 D, p < 0.001; 0.31 ± 0.17 D, p < 0.001 and 15.22 ± 20.93 ms, p = 0.002, respectively). Also, a time-on- task effect was found for the variability of accommodation and reaction time (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively), observing higher values over time. However, the lag of accommodation did not change significantly as a function of time-on- task (p = 0.33). Conclusion: Dual-focus soft contact lens wear influences the steady-state accommodative response and behavioural performance during the execution of a visual vigilance task in the short-term. Eye care practitioners should be aware of these effects when prescribing these lenses for myopia management, and provide specific recommendations according to the individual visual needs.

Clinical relevance: The use of face masks has demonstrated to be an effective strategy to prevent transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Wearing face masks, mainly Filtering Face Piece 2 (FFP2) masks, during exercise practice has demonstrated to affect several physiological measures. Background: This study was aimed at assessing the intraocular pressure (IOP) behaviour during the execution of the dynamic and isometric biceps-curl exercise with a surgical and FFP2 face mask. Methods: Twenty two physically active young adults performed sets of 10 repetitions against the 10-RM (repetition maximum) load and 1-minute isometric effort against a load 15% lower than the 10-RM load with the FFP2 and surgical mask and without any mask. A total of six exercise sets (3 experimental conditions [FFP2, surgical and control] × 2 exercise modalities) were performed. A rebound tonometer was used to measure IOP before, during (10 measurements), and after (30-seconds of passive recovery) each training set. Results: At rest, there were not statistically significant IOP differences (p = 0.222). During dynamic exercise, there was a progressive IOP rise (p < 0.001), and a higher IOP response with the FFP2 than without the mask (corrected p-value = 0.003). For the isometric exercise, there was a greater IOP response as a function of accumulated effort (p < 0.001), which was dependent of the face mask used (FFP2> surgical>control; corrected p-values< 0.01). Conclusions: The FFP2 masks cause a heightened IOP response during the execution of dynamic and isometric biceps-curl exercise, suggesting that, when possible, glaucoma patients should limit the use of FFP2 masks during resistance training.

Purpose: Recent technological advances have permitted to objectively record the accommodative response while shifting between two different levels of accommodation. This study is aimed at examining the concurrent validity of a new objective method for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of binocular accommodative facility, which is named 2Q-AF test, in comparison to the ±2.00 DS lens flippers. Methods: Fifty-six individuals took part in this study (36 healthy young adults [24.4 ± 3.2 years] and 20 children [12.2 ± 0.4 years]). Participants randomly performed the 2Q-AF and the ±2.00 DS lens flipper tests. For the 2Q-AF test, a binocular open-field autorefractor was used to record the magnitude of accommodative response during a 60-sec period, while participants repeatedly changed fixation from a 5 m to a 40 cm chart when clarity of vision was achieved at each level. Due to the advantages of the proposed method, we have determined the number of cycles and the 2Q-AF score, with the latter also considering the accuracy of changes in accommodation. A standard procedure was followed for the ±2.00 DS flipper test. Results: Our data exhibited a moderate association between the number of cycles with the ±2.00 DS lens flippers and the number of cycles in the 2Q-AF test in the group of young adults (p = .005, r = 0.46 [0.15–0.68]) and children (p = .007, r = 0.58 [0.19–0.81]), whereas a stronger relationship was observed when considering the number of cycles with the ±2.00 DS lens flippers and the 2Q-AF score (young adults: p < .001, r = 0.83 [0.69–0.91]; and children: p < .001, r = 0.78 [0.52–0.91]). Conclusions: The current findings show that the 2Q-AF test is a valid method for accommodative facility assessment, as suggested by its good levels of reliability and validity. This method allows to examine the accommodative facility in qualitative terms and solve most of the limitations associated with the ±2.00 DS lens flipper test.

Here we report the use of resistance-guided retreatment of patients who failed prior NS5A inhibitor-containing regimens in the GEHEP-004 cohort. This is the largest direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-resistance cohort study conducted in Spain. We aim to provide indications on how to use resistance information in settings where sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir may not be available., [Methods] GEHEP-004 is a prospective multicenter cohort enrolling HCV-infected patients treated with interferon (IFN)-free DAA regimens. Prior to retreatment, population-based sequencing of HCV NS3, NS5A and NS5B genes was performed. After receiving a comprehensive resistance interpretation report, the retreatment regimen was chosen and the sustained virological response (SVR) at 12 weeks after treatment completion (SVR12) was recorded., [Results] A total of 342 patients experiencing virological failure after treatment with sofosbuvir/ledipasvir±ribavirin (54%), sofosbuvir/daclatasvir±ribavirin (23%), or paritaprevir-ritonavir/ombitasvir±dasabuvir±ribavirin (20%) were studied. After a resistance report, 186 patients were retreated. An SVR12 was achieved for 88.1% of the patients who failed after sofosbuvir/ledipasvir±ribavirin, 83.3% of the patients who failed after sofosbuvir/daclatasvir±ribavirin, 93.7% of the patients who failed after paritaprevir-ritonavir+ombitasvir±dasabuvir±ribavirin., [Conclusions] In our study, we show how resistance-guided retreatment in conjunction with an interpreted report allows patients to achieve SVR rates close to 90%. We hypothesize that SVR rates may even be improved if resistance data are discussed between experienced virologists and treating clinicians. We believe that our data may be relevant for countries where the access to new DAA combination regimens is limited., [Lay summary] Hepatitis C infection can be cured with currently available antiviral agents. Only a small proportion of patients experience treatment failure, however, in absolute numbers, a high number of patients may require retreatment. Highly effective combinations of antivirals are also available for retreatment. However, these antivirals might not be available in resource-limited settings. Clinical Relevance Background: Steady-state accommodation is frequently evaluated with open-field autorefractors; however there is no consensus regarding the optimal test duration. Our results allow us to standardise the procedure followed for the assessment of the steady-state accommodative response in clinical and laboratory settings and may be of great relevance in time-constrained situations. BACKGROUND The present study aims to determine the optimal recording time to assess the magnitude and variability of the accommodative response with a binocular open-field autorefractor. METHODS The steady-state accommodative response of 84 healthy undergraduate students was dynamically measured using the Grand Seiko WAM-5500 autorefractor at 500 cm, 40 cm and 20 cm for 90 s while participants maintained focus on a stationary target. We examined the reliability and level of agreement between four time intervals (the first 10-s, 30-s, 60-s and 90-s) at three accommodative demands (0.2D, 2.5D and 5D). RESULTS The magnitude of accommodation showed an excellent level of reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]> 0.90) for the comparisons between the 90-s, 60-s and 30-s time intervals at the three viewing distances tested. However, when including the 10-s interval, there was a moderate reduction of the reliability indices and an increase of the mean difference between two time intervals (intra-class correlation [ICC] ranging from 0.89 to 0.97; and ESs ranging from 0.16 to 0.42). For the variability of accommodation, we observed an excellent reliability for the comparisons of the 90-s and 60-s measures at the three accommodative demands (ICC: 0.95-0.96), whereas for the rest of comparisons we observed from moderate to good levels of reliability. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that of 30-s and 60-s are enough to accurately assess the magnitude and variability of the accommodative response with the WAM-5500 autorefractor, respectively.

Ocular physiology is sensitive to cognitively demanding tasks. However, it is unknown whether the intraocular pressure is also affected by the cognitive demands of military operations. The main objective was to determine the impact of a virtual reality shooting simulation with two levels of complexity on intraocular pressure levels in military personnel. Eighteen active-duty members of the Spanish Army and eighteen civilians performed two 4 min simulated shooting tasks with two levels of complexity using a virtual reality. In the “easy” task participants performed a simulated shoot when the stimulus (military with a rifle) appeared, while in the “difficult” task the stimulus randomly was a military with a rifle or with his hands on the air and participants were instructed to respond only when the military with a rifle appeared. Intraocular pressure was measured with a rebound tonometer before and immediately after each task. Complementarily, perceived levels of mental load and shooting performance (reaction time) were assessed. Intraocular pressure was greater after completing the more complex task in both military personnel (p-value < 0.01, Cohen´s d = 1.19) and civilians (p-value < 0.01, Cohen´s d = 1.16). Also, perceived levels of task load and reaction time were higher in the difficult compared to the easy shooting tasks (both p < 0.001). The rise in intraocular pressure is positively associated with the cognitive demands of simulated military operations. This study evaluated the time-on-task effect of a sustained attention task on the accommodative response, explored the link between ocular accommodation, cardiac autonomic regulation and behavioral performance, and tested the inter-session repeatability of these results by performing the same experimental procedure on different days. The accommodative response was measured in 25 university students using a WAM-5500 autorefractor, while participants performed a 10-minute psychomotor vigilance task at 50 cm. There were no time-on-task effects for the lag of accommodation, whereas the microfluctuations of accommodation and reaction time were modulated as a function of time-on-task, observing a progressive increment of both variables over time. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the microfluctuations of accommodation were a reasonably good predictor of behavioral performance. Analysis of inter-session repeatability showed that ocular accommodation, heart rate variability and reaction time had a low to moderate level of repeatability between two measurements. The microfluctuations of accommodation were sensitive to time-on-task effects during sustained attention, with a lower stability of accommodation being linked to reduced behavioral performance. The predictive capacity of the variability of accommodation for behavioral performance might be explained by the brain mechanisms shared by the ocular dynamics and attentional state; however, future studies would be required to elucidate this association. The low to moderate inter-session repeatability indicated that results in two measurement periods cannot be considered interchangeable, and therefore, the results of this study should be interpreted cautiously in this regard.

SIGNIFICANCE The present study addresses the accommodative response and its dependence on the type of optical correction used. The results are discussed relative to their possible implications for myopia progression and visual fatigue. PURPOSE The accommodative response has been investigated owing to its possible relationship with the onset and progression of myopia and visual fatigue. This study explored the influence of wearing soft contact lenses in comparison with spectacles in terms of magnitude and variability of accommodation. In addition, we analyzed the intersession and intermethod repeatability. METHODS Dynamic accommodative response was recorded during 30-second epochs, at five different distances (50, 40, 33, 25, and 20 cm), in 21 individuals (mean refractive error ± SD, -0.79 ± 1.39 D) while wearing either soft contact lenses or spectacles on two different days. Si hay un sector del Ordenamiento jurídico especialmente problemático a la hora de conciliar el derecho de acceso a la información y el derecho a la protección de los datos de carácter personal es, sin lugar a dudas, el tributario. El trabajo reflexiona sobre la tensión existente entre el derecho a la intimidad, fundamento en última instancia de la normativa sobre protección de datos, y el derecho de acceso a la información administrativa a la luz de las actuales leyes de transparencia, centrándonos en el ámbito tributario, pues ambos sectores del ordenamiento jurídico parten de principios contrapuestos, lo que constituye una fuente de inseguridad jurídica para quienes tienen la función de aplicar estas normas. Por otro lado, cuando se trata de personas jurídicas, expresamente excluidas del ámbito de aplicación de la LOPDGDD, tanto la normativa tributaria como catastral extienden expresamente a estas su régimen de protección de datos, situándolas en el mismo plano que a las personas físicas; por tanto, es la normativa sectorial la que configura el estatuto de protección de datos de las Personas jurídicas.

The present study aimed (1) to examine the impact of two high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols differing in exercise intensity (low intensity and high intensity) on the dynamic accommodative response (AR), and (2) to elucidate whether the ocular accommodation changes are associated with the function of the autonomic nervous system during stimulus processing, as measured by the heart rate variability (HRV).Twenty physically active university students (9 women; age = 23.9 ± 3.3 years) were tested on three separate sessions. The lag of accommodation and the root mean square of successive R-R interval differences (RMSSD) parameter of HRV were obtained at the beginning and at the end of each testing session, while one of the following protocols was applied in a randomized order between the measurements, low-intensity HIIT (8 sprints with 60 s of rest), high-intensity HIIT (8 sprints with 30 s of rest), and Control (walking for 8 min).Our data demonstrated a higher lag of accommodation after the high-intensity HIIT compared to the low-intensity HIIT (p = 0.006, d = 0.798) and control (p = 0.007, d = 0.741), but no significant differences were observed between the low-intensity HIIT protocol and control condition (p = 0.598, d = 0.12). As expected, lower HRV values were observed with higher exercise intensity, but the changes of AR and HRV were not significantly correlated (p 0.05 in all cases).The present findings indicate that the acute effects of exercise on ocular accommodation depend on exercise intensity, showing that highly demanding physical effort induces a greater lag of accommodation, which may be of relevance when performing near activities after physical efforts.
