1. MUPUS insertion device for the Rosetta mission

Abstract: An original mechanical device designed to insert a penetrator into a cometary nucleus in an almost gravityfree environment is described. The device comprises a hammer and a power supply system that stores electrical energy in a capacitor. The accumulated energy is discharged through a coil forming a part of electromagnetic circuit that accelerates the hammer. The efficiency of converting the electrical energy to kinetic energy of the hammer is not very high (amounts to about 25%), but the system is very reliable. Additionally, the hammer energy can be chosen from four power settings, hence adjustment of the stroke’s strength to nucleus hard- ness is possible. The device passed many mechanical, func- tional, thermal and vibration tests and was improved from one model to another. The final, flight model was integrated with the lander Philae and started its space journey to comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in March 2004.

2. Energy Dissipation during Surface Interaction of an Underactuated Robot for Planetary Exploration

Abstract: The article summarizes research on essential contributors to energy dissipation in an actuator for an exemplary planetary exploration hopping robot. It was demonstrated that contact dynamics could vary significantly depending on the surface type. As a result, regolith is a significant uncertainty factor to the control loop and plays a significant contribution in the control system development of future planetary exploration robots. The actual prototype of the actuating mechanism was tested on a reference surface and then compared with various surfaces (i.e., Syar, quartz sand, expanded clay, and quartz aggregate) to estimate the dissipation of the energy in the initial phase of hopping. Test outcomes are compared with multibody analysis. The research enhances trajectory planning and adaptive control of future hopping robots by determining three significant types of energy losses in the system and, most importantly, determining energy dissipation coefficients in contact with the various surfaces (i.e., from 4% to 53% depending on the surface type). The actual step-by-step methodology is proposed to analyze energy dissipation aspects for a limited number of runs, as it is a case for space systems.

Abstract: In the frame of Near-Earth-Object exploration and planetary defence, the two-part AIDA mission is currently studied by NASA and ESA. Being composed of a kinetic impactor, DART (NASA), and by an observing spacecraft, AIM (ESA), AIDA has been designed to deliver vital data to determine the momentum transfer efficiency of a kinetic impact onto a small body and the key physical properties of the target asteroid. This will enable derivation of the impact response of the object as a function of its physical properties, a crucial quantitative point besides the qualitative proof of the deflection. In the course of the AIM mission definition, a lander has been studied as an essential element of the overall mission architecture. It was meant to be deployed on Didymoon, the secondary body of the binary NEA system 65803 Didymos and it was supposed to significantly enhance the analysis of the body's dynamical state, mass, geophysical properties, surface and subsurface structure. The mission profile and the design of the 13 kg (current best estimate) nano-lander have been derived from the MASCOT lander flying aboard Hayabusa2. Differing from its predecessor by having an increased lifetime of more than three months, a surface mobility capability including directed movement, a sensor system for localization and attitude determination on the surface and a redesigned mechanical interface to the mother spacecraft. The MASCOT2 instrument suite consists of a bi-static, low frequency radar as main instrument, supported by an accelerometer, a camera, a radiometer and a magnetometer; the latter three already flying on MASCOT. Besides the radar measurements, the camera is meant to provide high-resolution images of the landing area, and accelerometers to record the bouncing dynamics by which the top surface mechanical properties can be determined. During the DART impact, MASCOT2 was expected to be able to detect the seismic shock, providing valuable information on the internal structure of the body. MASCOT2 was supposed also to serve as a technology demonstrator for very small asteroid landing and extended operations powered by a solar generator. In this paper, we describe the science concept, mission analysis of the separation, descent and landing phase, the operational timeline, and the latest status of the lander's design. Despite the fact that AIM funding has not been fully confirmed during the ESA Ministerial conference in 2016, MASCOT2 is an instrument package of high maturity and major interest for planetary defence and NEO science. With appropriate tailoring and optimization, it can be considered and studied for future missions.

Abstract: Banerdt, William B. et al., NASA’s InSight (Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) mission landed in Elysium Planitia on Mars on 26 November 2018. It aims to determine the interior structure, composition and thermal state of Mars, as well as constrain present-day seismicity and impact cratering rates. Such information is key to understanding the differentiation and subsequent thermal evolution of Mars, and thus the forces that shape the planet’s surface geology and volatile processes. Here we report an overview of the first ten months of geophysical observations by InSight. As of 30 September 2019, 174 seismic events have been recorded by the lander’s seismometer, including over 20 events of moment magnitude M = 3–4. The detections thus far are consistent with tectonic origins, with no impact-induced seismicity yet observed, and indicate a seismically active planet. An assessment of these detections suggests that the frequency of global seismic events below approximately M = 3 is similar to that of terrestrial intraplate seismic activity, but there are fewer larger quakes; no quakes exceeding M = 4 have been observed. The lander’s other instruments—two cameras, atmospheric pressure, temperature and wind sensors, a magnetometer and a radiometer—have yielded much more than the intended supporting data for seismometer noise characterization: magnetic field measurements indicate a local magnetic field that is ten-times stronger than orbital estimates and meteorological measurements reveal a more dynamic atmosphere than expected, hosting baroclinic and gravity waves and convective vortices. Abstract: Comprehensive understanding of the principles governing the geological activity of the Earth was obtained in continental and oceanic mountains. It is not expected that the principles governing the overall geologic activity and evolution of other planetary bodies such as Mars will be understood if exploration is limited to nearly flat terrains, either imposed by the used exploration platform capabilities, the risk of getting stuck, or by the time required to cross the border of a landing ellipse. Surface exploration of mountains is additionally to be coupled to two- or three-dimensional geophysical surveys to correlate the surface observations with deeper processes. On the small bodies where ultra-low gravity prevails, the weight of wheel-driven platforms is not sufficient to generate the friction at the contact with the ground that is required to trigger motion of the rover relative to the ground. Under such circumstances, hopping is one of the mobility solutions. We present a new locomotion system, the hopter platform, which is adapted to these challenges on Solar System bodies having a gravity field lower than on Earth. The hopter is a robust, versatile and highly manoeuvrable platform based on simple mechanical concepts that accurately jumps to distances of metres to tens of metres and more, depending on the gravity field of the studied body. Its low mass of 10 kg (including up to 3 kg of miniaturised payload), makes it possible to simultaneously launch several hopters to work as a fractionated explorer at a very competitive cost. After reviewing the payload that may be placed onboard hopters, we illustrate the scientific capabilities of hopters and hopter networks in performing basic geologic observations at distinct study sites in a variety of geological environments, obtaining data along steep geological cross sections, surveying geophysical anomalies in the subsurface, prospecting resources, monitoring micro-environments, meteorological events, and geodetic deformation, or characterizing dust activity on Mars, the Moon, and Phobos.

Abstract: International audience; Our knowledge of the internal structure of asteroids is, so far, indirect – relying entirely on inferences from remote sensing observations of the surface, and theoretical modeling of formation and evolution. What are the bulk properties of the regolith and deep interior? And what are the physical processes that shape asteroid internal structures? Is the composition and size distribution observed on the surface representative of the bulk? These questions are crucial to understand small bodies’ history from accretion in the early Solar System to the present, and direct measurements are needed to answer these questions for the benefit of science as well as for planetary defense or exploration.Radar is one of the main instruments capable of sounding asteroids to characterize internal structure from sub-meter to global scale. In this paper, we review the science case for direct observation of the deep internal structure and regolith of a rocky asteroid of kilometer size or smaller. We establish the requirements and model dielectric properties of asteroids to outline a possible instrument suite, and highlight the capabilities of radar instrumentation to achieve these observations. We then review the expected science return including secondary objectives contributing to the determination of the gravitational field, the shape model, and the dynamical state. This work is largely inherited from MarcoPolo-R and AIDA/AIM studies.

11. Pile driving models for the evaluation of soil penetration resistance measurements from planetary subsurface probes

Abstract: Several planetary lander missions conducted in the past and planned for the near future have instruments on board, which are dedicated to the determination of various material properties, among them mechanical properties of the surface like material strength and penetration resistance. In this paper two instruments are considered in more detail: (i) the MUPUS penetrator, a device aboard the Lander Philae of ESA׳s Rosetta mission, and (ii) the Mole HP 3 , which is part of the payload of NASA׳s next Discovery mission InSight , due for landing on Mars in 2016. Both devices are driven by hammering mechanisms designed to work under low or micro-gravity conditions and blaze themselves a trail into the subsurface of their respective target bodies. Naturally the speed with which this process takes place and if penetration is possible at all depends on the mechanical properties of the soil. However, a quantitative evaluation of soil mechanical parameters from measured depth-versus-time data is not a straightforward task. In this paper we apply an old technique, originally developed for modelling the driving of a pile into the ground, to describe the performance of penetrators and Moles developed for planetary applications. The numerical pile driving model of Smith (1962) is scaled and adapted for this purpose and used to predict the penetration behaviour of these instruments in dependence of their internal construction and the properties of the soil they are driven in. The model computes the permanent set of the surrounding soil in response to one hammer blow cycle as well as the oscillations and waves excited inside the devices and in the surrounding soil. Both the penetration resistance of the tip and the resistance caused by friction of the penetrator along the cylindrical side wall are calculated. By comparing the modelling results with previous laboratory measurements it is demonstrated that the models produce realistic results and can be used both as tools for proper design of future penetration devices and for the evaluation of soil-mechanical properties from measured penetration data. The most sensitive soil parameter controlling penetration progress per stroke is the ultimate static bearing capacity of the ground. Although the method used for our calculations is essentially the same as that applied by Smith (1962) for describing the behaviour of long and heavy piles in geotechnical engineering, it is found that the penetration process for such small and light weight systems takes place in a quite different way. While for the former secondary oscillations are irrelevant for the determination of the permanent set caused by one stroke, in the latter the penetration in response to one hammer stroke takes place in many small increments, until a stable depth is reached. Our model describes the full dynamic behaviour of the system over an arbitrary time span and has the potential to be adapted to systems with other geometrical dimensions and masses, as long as the diameter/length ratio of the probe remains reasonably small.

12. Low velocity penetrators (LVP) driven by hammering action – definition of the principle of operation based on numerical models and experimental tests

Abstract: In the paper a theory of motion of low velocity penetrator (LVP) is presented and confronted with the results of tests of a mole-like penetrator performed in material similar to lunar regolith. This theory is based on the fact that the considered LVP comprises, in principle, of at least three moveable mechanical parts: the penetrator casing, the hammer and the support mass, and are surrounded by the regolith. For the first time equations of motion of such system in the mechanically resistive medium are derived and numerically solved. The model is focused on the interactions between LVP subsystems and and influence of these interactions on LVP general behavior. The interactions with surrounding regolith were simplified and equations describing these interactions contain two parameters which were determined during experimental campaigns of mole KRET (LVP penetrator developed at the Space Research Centre PAS). Two major results were achieved: (i) LVP stability map as a function of the LVP parameters responsible for energy distribution in the system and (ii) duration of the particular phases of the LVP movement. The stability of the LVP forward motion was analyzed with respect to mass parameters p 1 and p 2 and stiffness of the springs k d and k r , and let to define the region where LVP is able to move forward in both Earth gravity and near zero gravity environment. The duration of particular phases of the LVP motion allows better understanding of cross dependencies between LVP subsystems and future ways to improve the design.

13. Deployable Manipulator Technology with Application for UAVs

Abstract: Aerial and space manipulators are difficult to control as reaction forces and reaction torques, induced by manipulator motions, disturb manipulator base (UAV or satellite). Low mass is, therefore, a key requirement for manipulator design. Few technology demonstrators for space manipulators have been developed so far. Aerial manipulators are also being researched in terms of potential future applications (e.g., emergency management). In this paper, deployable, low mass manipulator for UAV helicopter is presented. It was developed in the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences basing on steel tubular booms (initially developed for ESA Rosetta mission). The results of test flights of the UAV-manipulator system are presented, showing the influence of the manipulator motions on UAV state and its control system.

Abstract: The article describes a final design of the new 2 dof robotic telescope on the parallactic mount, controlled via internet. The robot will be applied in the “Pi of the Sky” camera positioning system with capability to use four cameras with 20 cm objectives and total load of up to 150 kg. The system will be employed in astrophysical observations to discover the strong electromagnetic radiation originating from violent cosmological phenomena and presumably associated with sources of gravitational waves. Therefore, direct observations performed with high time resolution by dedicated robotic telescope play a key role. Short time of reaction combined with very high accuracy and smooth tracking generates rigorous challenges for the design solutions. Selected types of harmonic drive and stepper motor, with use of feedback from an ultrahigh resolution optical encoder fixed directly to the output axes, enable any celestial object to be located and tracked for hours with arc second accuracy. To increase the observation capability, two modes (DEEP and WIDE) changing cameras field of view required a special mechanism. Abstract: The article covers a preliminary research on a Tethered Satellite System based on a 3U CubeSat pico-satellite standard, which main purpose is to perform two-point diagnostic measurements of electromagnetic emissions in near-Earth plasma. Multi-point measurements play a significant role in understanding energy flows driven by Sun as well as terrestrial activity. Since CubeSats are expected to be low-cost and robust, development of a small and efficient plasma diagnostic tool for hardware-restrained CubeSat platform might be important also for future space cluster missions. We propose a TwinCube mission consisting of two sub-satellites that will be preliminarily bonded with lock-and-release mechanisms. During in-orbit operations the mechanism will be released allowing for unwinding of the non-conductive tether and for separating two sub-satellites for up to 1 km. This action is crucial for the mission success and is considered as one of the important technological aspects of the project. Objectives and justification of the mission are outlined in the article, together with basic mission scenario, simulations confirming feasibility of the idea and discussion on assumptions for the mechanical design.

Abstract: The JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) will perform advanced investigations of Jupiter and its system in order to understand their inter-relations and complexity. The special attention will be focus on investigation related to the definition the Ganymede as potential habitat. However investigations of Europa and Callisto would complete a comparative picture of the Galilean moons. JUICE is the necessary step for future exploration of Solar System. The JUICE mission was selected by ESA in May 2012, as a first large mission within the Cosmic Vision Program 2015-2025. As Jupiter is the archetype for the giant planets of the Solar System deeply understanding this system its history, from its origin to the possible emergence of habitable environments, will give us unique possibilities for basic research as well as for exploration and advanced technical development. The JUICE mission has been formulated with consultation and strong support from the international planetary science community and it will have broad appeal across a number of different disciplines including geologists, astrobiologists, magnetospheric and atmospheric scientists. The Radio & Plasma Waves Investigation (RPWI) consists of a highly integrated instrument package that will carry out measurements that allow for comprehensive science investigations of the space environments around Jupiter primarily near Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, as well as monitoring radio wave emissions in the Jupiter system.

Abstract: The southern part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will consist of at least three types of telescopes: large size, medium size and small size telescopes. Massive Monte Carlo simulations have been performed using the European Grid Infrastructure to analyze the performance of this array. We present the results of these simulations for a sub-array of small size telescopes of the Davies-Cotton type. Such a telescope, called SST-1M, is currently being proposed for the CTA observatory by a group of Polish and Swiss institutions. SST-1M will have a mirror of 4m diameter and it will be equipped with a fully digital camera based on silicon photodetectors. We present the analysis of the sub-array sensitivity, angular resolution, and energy resolution to demonstrate the fulfillment of the requirements of the CTA Consortium. To verify the results obtained in numerical simulations a construction of a mini array of five SST-1M telescopes is planned. We also present the performance of such a mini array and discuss the prospects of its scientific program.

Abstract: The single mirror Small Size Telescopes (SST-1M), being built by a sub-consortium of Polish and Swiss Institutions of the CTA Consortium, will be equipped with a fully digital camera with a compact photodetector plane based on silicon photomultipliers. The internal trigger signal transmission overhead will be kept at low level by introducing a high level of integration. It will be achieved by massively deploying state-of-the-art multi-gigabit transceivers, beginning from the ADC flash converters, through the internal data and trigger signals transmission over backplanes and cables, to the camera’s server 10Gb/s Ethernet links. Such approach will allow fitting the size and weight of the camera exactly to the SST-1M needs, still retaining the flexibility of a fully digital design. Such solution has low power consumption, high reliability and long lifetime. The concept of the camera will be described, along with some construction details and performance results.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. Abstract: Curiosity is a passport to the Universe. The progress in technology made admiring the nightly sky easier than ever. A mechanism utilizing two CCD cameras based on equatorial mount is a simple design characterized by high precision. The design had two basic assumptions. The first concerned the accuracy of object positioning: 6 s of arc, second related to the kinematics of the system—continuity of operations and the possibility to switch to a different object of observation in a few seconds. All components used in this design are available on the market. Never before has technology given so many tools for taking a look into the Cosmos. Though the presented mechanism might seem simple, amateur even, it can only be treated as one of its many advantages.

Abstract: The demand for the use of Planetary Manipulators is quite obvious in space exploration and in situ research. It can also be predicted that its role will expand in upcoming decades given the planned intensification of space exploration. This chapter presents the newly developed 3dof Ultra-Light Planetary Manipulator (ULPM) designated for extended servicing of exploration tools (e.g., penetrators, small rovers, etc.), or scientific instruments and sensors in planetary missions, where Mars and Moon are the mostly foreseen destinations. It combines new ideas and earlier achievements, both of which had influence on the concept and would demonstrate the technology. In consequence, a laboratory model device was successively developed. Two leading constraints determined the design: very low mass of the unit and long extension range of deployment of the servicing instruments. For those reasons, the utilization of the tubular boom mechanism was preferred. Integrated Ultra-Light Planetary Manipulator was tested in laboratory conditions in order to prove its operational functionality and performance. Particularly, it was examined what is the safety deployment distance for certain loads with acceptable stability of the flexible system structure. This topic was also one of the most important issues for performed analysis and manipulator’s dynamics simulations.

Abstract: Depending on the specific region, the unmanned exploration of the planetary bodies can be divided into three groups: operations above the surface, operations on the surface and operations under the surface. In this chapter we will focus on the operations under the surface, connected with them requirements, available technology and possible output from such research. In this context we will present mole KRET device as a one of the possible solutions for low power consuming device which can be treated as a sub-surface end-effector of a more complicated robotic system. The experimental results of the functional tests of the mole in a 5 m test-bed system will be provided for different regolith analogue. The detailed investigation of lunar analogue will show how the progress of the mole depends on the compaction ratio of the material.

Both properties are of high importance for the understanding of the lunar structure and the evolution of the Moon–Earth system. In this paper we present some work on new thermal sensors to be used for in situ investigations of the lunar soil in combination with novel drilling techniques applicable for the lunar regolith. Such systems may preferably be mounted on mobile stations like the lunar rover currently built for the Chinese Chang’e 2 mission. A general description of a presently tested prototype of the lunar rover is given and mounting possibilities for a drilling system and thermal sensors are shown. Then we discuss some options for thermal sensors and drills and how they could be combined into one compact instrument. Subsequently a tube-like sensor suitable for measuring the thermal conductivity of the material surrounding a borehole is described in more detail. Finally the performance of such a tube-shaped sensor when applied in a lunar borehole is investigated by thermal modelling and compared with the behaviour of a more conventional needle-shaped sensor.

Abstract: MUPUS, the multi purpose sensor package onboard the Rosetta lander Philae, will measure the energy balance and the physical parameters in the near-surface layers – up to about 30 cm depth- of the nucleus of Rosetta’s target comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Moreover it will monitor changes in these parameters over time as the comet approaches the sun. Among the parameters studied are the density, the porosity, cohesion, the thermal diffusivity and conductivity, and temperature. The data should increase our knowledge of how comets work, and how the coma gases form. The data may also be used to constrain the microstructure of the nucleus material. Changes with time of physical properties will reveal timescales and possibly the nature of processes that modify the material close to the surface. Thereby, the data will indicate how pristine cometary matter sampled and analysed by other experiments on Philae really is.

Abstract: The free-floating satellite performing autonomous rendezvous and docking maneuver (RVD) to the uncontrolled target satellite is a topic of discussion especially in context of the path planning optimization, control algorithm design as well as approach to the testing procedure. In this paper we investigate the possibility of using an unmanned helicopter as a test platform for examination of control algorithms which could be used on the satellitemanipulator system. We are presenting the typical RVD maneuver in which uncontrolled tumbling satellite is captured by manipulator arm. Then, to prove the correct development of the simulation tool as well as the controller of the space robots (6+6 DoF) during RVD maneuver, the comparison of the simulation and testing of the helicopter equipped with manipulator arm (6+2 DoF) is performed. Additionally, design of a special lightweight manipulator applicable to UAV is presented.

Abstract: Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. 30. Photometric modelling of the martian dust rings

Abstract: There are reasons to expect that Mars is surrounded by a region of dust, similar to rings, originating from the bombardment of Phobos and Deimos by meteroids. Using a simple radiative transfer model, we have investigated the angular distribution and the absolute values of the solar radiance scattered by such a dust region, to the purpose of assessing the possibilities and limitations of future photometric searches after the circummartian dust. Our model values of the number density of the dust grains in the space around Mars and of their size distribution have been derived from the results obtained by other authors. The single-scattering albedo of the dust grains has been deduced from the reflectance spectra of Phobos, taken by the spacecraft Phobos 2. Calculations, carried out for a few phenomenological phase functions, have shown that in the visible the radiance scattered by the rings is well within the detectability range of a modern sensible photometer, so that the prospectives for photometric search for the Martian dust rings are optimistic. Furthermore, our results confirm that the dust region could not be observed by the Viking cameras and this supports o our assumptions regarding the optical properties of the circummartian grains.
