We present a detailed method to simulating sensor distortions using a photon and electron Monte Carlo method. We use three dimensional electrostatic simulations to parameterize the perturbed electric field profile for non-ideal sensor details. We follow the conversion of simulated photons, and the subsequent response of the converted electrons to the electric field pattern. These non-ideal sensor details can be implemented efficiently in a Monte Carlo approach. We demonstrate that the non-ideal sensor distortions have a variety of observable consequence including the modification of the astrometric pattern, the distortion of the electron diffusion size and shape, and the distortion of flats. We show analytic validation of the diffusion physics, reproduce two kinds of edge distortion, and show qualitative validation of field-free regions, lithography errors, and fringing. We also demonstrate that there are two related effects of doping variation having different observable consequences. We show that field distortions from accumulated electrons lead to intensity-dependent point-spread-functions and the sub-linear variance in flats. We present a comprehensive methodology for the simulation of astronomical images from optical survey telescopes. We use a photon Monte Carlo approach to construct images by sampling photons from models of astronomical source populations, and then simulating those photons through the system as they interact with the atmosphere, telescope, and camera. We demonstrate that all physical effects for optical light that determine the shapes, locations, and brightnesses of individual stars and galaxies can be accurately represented in this formalism. By using large scale grid computing, modern processors, and an efficient implementation that can produce 400,000 photons/second, we demonstrate that even very large optical surveys can be now be simulated. We demonstrate that we are able to: 1) construct kilometer scale phase screens necessary for wide-field telescopes, 2) reproduce atmospheric point-spread-function moments using a fast novel hybrid geometric/Fourier technique for non-diffraction limited telescopes, 3) accurately reproduce the expected spot diagrams for complex aspheric optical designs, and 4) recover system effective area predicted from analytic photometry integrals. This new code, the photon simulator (PhoSim), is publicly available. We have implemented the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) design, and it can be extended to other telescopes. We expect that because of the comprehensive physics implemented in PhoSim, it will be used by the community to plan future observations, interpret detailed existing observations, and quantify systematics related to various astronomical measurements. The statistics of peak counts in reconstructed shear maps contain information beyond the power spectrum, and can improve cosmological constraints from measurements of the power spectrum alone if systematic errors can be controlled. We study the effect of galaxy shape measurement errors on predicted cosmological constraints from the statistics of shear peak counts with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). We use the LSST image simulator in combination with cosmological N-body simulations to model realistic shear maps for different cosmological models. We include both galaxy shape noise and, for the first time, measurement errors on galaxy shapes. We find that the measurement errors considered have relatively little impact on the constraining power of shear peak counts for LSST., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. Submitted to ApJ

A main science goal for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is to measure the cosmic shear signal from weak lensing to extreme accuracy. One difficulty, however, is that with the short exposure time ($\simeq$15 seconds) proposed, the spatial variation of the Point Spread Function (PSF) shapes may be dominated by the atmosphere, in addition to optics errors. While optics errors mainly cause the PSF to vary on angular scales similar or larger than a single CCD sensor, the atmosphere generates stochastic structures on a wide range of angular scales. It thus becomes a challenge to infer the multi-scale, complex atmospheric PSF patterns by interpolating the sparsely sampled stars in the field. In this paper we present a new method, PSFent, for interpolating the PSF shape parameters, based on reconstructing underlying shape parameter maps with a multi-scale maximum entropy algorithm. We demonstrate, using images from the LSST Photon Simulator, the performance of our approach relative to a 5th-order polynomial fit (representing the current standard) and a simple boxcar smoothing technique. Quantitatively, PSFent predicts more accurate PSF models in all scenarios and the residual PSF errors are spatially less correlated. This improvement in PSF interpolation leads to a factor of 3.5 lower systematic errors in the shear power spectrum on scales smaller than $\sim13'$, compared to polynomial fitting. We estimate that with PSFent and for stellar densities greater than $\simeq1/{\rm arcmin}^{2}$, the spurious shear correlation from PSF interpolation, after combining a complete 10-year dataset from LSST, is lower than the corresponding statistical uncertainties on the cosmic shear power spectrum, even under a conservative scenario., Comment: 18 pages,12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The complete 10-year survey from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will image $\sim$ 20,000 square degrees of sky in six filter bands every few nights, bringing the final survey depth to $r\sim27.5$, with over 4 billion well measured galaxies. To take full advantage of this unprecedented statistical power, the systematic errors associated with weak lensing measurements need to be controlled to a level similar to the statistical errors. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively estimate the absolute level and statistical properties of the systematic errors on weak lensing shear measurements due to the most important physical effects in the LSST system via high fidelity ray-tracing simulations. We identify and isolate the different sources of algorithm-independent, \textit{additive} systematic errors on shear measurements for LSST and predict their impact on the final cosmic shear measurements using conventional weak lensing analysis techniques. We find that the main source of the errors comes from an inability to adequately characterise the atmospheric point spread function (PSF) due to its high frequency spatial variation on angular scales smaller than $\sim10'$ in the single short exposures, which propagates into a spurious shear correlation function at the $10^{-4}$--$10^{-3}$ level on these scales. With the large multi-epoch dataset that will be acquired by LSST, the stochastic errors average out, bringing the final spurious shear correlation function to a level very close to the statistical errors. Our results imply that the cosmological constraints from LSST will not be severely limited by these algorithm-independent, additive systematic effects., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Using a pulse-fit method, we investigate the spectral lags between the traditional gamma-ray band (50-400 keV) and the X-ray band (6-25 keV) for 8 GRBs with known redshifts (GRB 010921, GRB 020124, GRB 020127, GRB 021211, GRB 030528, GRB 040924, GRB 041006, GRB 050408) detected with the WXM and FREGATE instruments aboard the HETE-2 satellite. We find several relations for the individual GRB pulses between the spectral lag and other observables, such as the luminosity, pulse duration, and peak energy (Epeak). The obtained results are consistent with those for BATSE, indicating that the BATSE correlations are still valid at lower energies (6-25 keV). Furthermore, we find that the photon energy dependence for the spectral lags can reconcile the simple curvature effect model. A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. We present a large X-ray selected serendipitous cluster survey based on a novel joint analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. The survey provides enough depth to reach clusters of flux of $\approx 10^{-14} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ near $z$ $\approx$ 1 and simultaneously a large enough sample to find evidence for the strong evolution of clusters expected from structure formation theory. We detected a total of 723 clusters of which 462 are newly discovered clusters with greater than 6$\sigma$ significance. In addition, we also detect and measure 261 previously-known clusters and groups that can be used to calibrate the survey. The survey exploits a technique which combines the exquisite Chandra imaging quality with the high throughput of the XMM-Newton telescopes using overlapping survey regions. A large fraction of the contamination from AGN point sources is mitigated by using this technique. This results in a higher sensitivity for finding clusters of galaxies with relatively few photons and a large part of our survey has a flux sensitivity between $10^{-14}$ and $10^{-15} {ergs} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$. The survey covers 41.2 square degrees of overlapping Chandra and XMM-Newton fields and 122.2 square degrees of non-overlapping Chandra data. We measure the log N-log S distribution and fit it with a redshift-dependent model characterized by a luminosity distribution proportional to $e^{-\frac{z}{z_0}}$. We find that $z_0$ to be in the range 0.7 to 1.3, indicative of rapid cluster evolution, as expected for cosmic structure formation using parameters appropriate to the concordance cosmological model., Comment: 16 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Aims: Taking advantage of the forthcoming Catalog of the HETE-2 mission, the aim of this paper is to evaluate the main properties of HETE-2 GRBs - the E_peak, the T_90 and the E_iso - in their source frames and to derive their unbiased distribution. Methods: We first construct a complete sample containing all the bursts localized by the WXM on-board HETE-2, which are selected with a uniform criterion and whose observed parameters can be constrained. We then derive the intrinsic E_peak, T_90 and E_iso distributions using their redshift when it is available, or their pseudo-redshift otherwise. We finally compute the number of GRB (N_Vmax) within the visibility volume (V_max) of each GRB, in order to derive a weight for each detected burst accounting both for the detection significance and the star formation history of the universe. Results: The unbiased distributions obtained clearly show the predominence of X-ray flashes (XRFs) in the global GRB population. We also derive the rate of local GRBs: R0^H2 > 11 Gpc-3 yr-1, which is intermediate between the local rate obtained by considering only the high-luminosity bursts (~1 Gpc-3 yr-1) and that obtained by including the low-luminosity bursts (>200 Gpc-3 yr-1)., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables (editor version: 15 pages, 14 figures, tables 2 and 3 only available in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org)

A long X-ray flash was detected and localized by the instruments aboard the High Energy Transient Explorer II (HETE-2) at 00:03:30 UT on 2004 September 16. The position was reported to the GRB Coordinates Network (GCN) approximately 2 hours after the burst. This burst consists of two peaks separated by 200 s, with durations of 110 s and 60 s. We have analyzed the energy spectra of the 1st and 2nd peaks observed with the Wide Field X-Ray Monitor (WXM) and the French Gamma Telescope (FREGATE). We discuss the origin of the 2nd peak in terms of flux variabilities and timescales. We find that it is most likely part of the prompt emission, and is explained by the long-acting engine model. This feature is similar to some bright X-ray flares detected in the early afterglow phase of bursts observed by the Swift satellite., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

In this work, we present a multi-wavelength study of XRF 040912, aimed at measuring its distance scale and the intrinsic burst properties. We performed a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of both the prompt and the afterglow emission and we estimated the distance scale of the likely host galaxy. We then used the currently available sample of XRFs with known distance to discuss the connection between XRFs and classical Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). We found that the prompt emission properties unambiguously identify this burst as an XRF, with an observed peak energy of E_p=17+/-13 keV and a burst fluence ratio S(2-30keV)/S(30-400keV)>1. A non-fading optical source with R~24 mag and with an apparently extended morphology is spatially consistent with the X-ray afterglow, likely the host galaxy. XRF 040912 is a very dark burst since no afterglow optical counterpart is detected down to R>25 mag (3 sigma limiting magnitude) at 13.6 hours after the burst. The host galaxy spectrum detected from 3800A to 10000A, shows a single emission line at 9552A. The lack of any other strong emission lines blue-ward of the detected one and the absence of the Ly alpha cut-off down to 3800A are consistent with the hypothesis of the [OII] line at redshift z=1.563+/-0.001. The intrinsic spectral properties rank this XRF among the soft GRBs in the E_peak-E_iso diagram. Similar results were obtained for most XRFs at known redshift. Only XRF 060218 and XRF 020903 represent a good example of instrinsic XRF(i-XRF) and are possibly associated with a different progenitor population. Here we report the localizations and properties of four short-duration GRBs localized by the High Energy Transient Explorer 2 satellite (HETE-2): GRBs 010326B, 040802, 051211 and 060121, all of which were detected by the French Gamma Telescope (Fregate) and localized with the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) and/or Soft X-ray Camera (SXC) instruments. We discuss eight possible criteria for determining whether these GRBs are "short population bursts" (SPBs) or "long population bursts" (LPBs). These criteria are (1) duration, (2) pulse widths, (3) spectral hardness, (4) spectral lag, (5) energy Egamma radiated in gamma rays (or equivalently, the kinetic energy E_KE of the GRB jet), (6) existence of a long, soft bump following the burst, (7) location of the burst in the host galaxy, and (8) type of host galaxy. In particular, we have developed a likelihood method for determining the probability that a burst is an SPB or a LPB on the basis of its T90 duration alone. A striking feature of the resulting probability distribution is that the T90 duration at which a burst has an equal probability of being a SPB or a LPB is T90 = 5 s, not T90 = 2 s, as is often used. All four short-duration bursts discussed in detail in this paper have T90 durations in the Fregate 30-400 keV energy band of 1.90, 2.31, 4.25, and 1.97 sec, respectively, yielding probabilities P(S|T90) = 0.97, 0.91, 0.60, and 0.95 that these bursts are SPBs on the basis of their T90 durations alone. All four bursts also have spectral lags consistent with zero. GRB 051022 was detected at 13:07:58 on 22 October 2005 by HETE-2. The location of GRB 051022 was determined immediately by the flight localization system. This burst contains multiple pulses and has a rather long duration of about 190 seconds. The detections of candidate X-ray and radio afterglows were reported, whereas no optical afterglow was found. The optical spectroscopic observations of the host galaxy revealed the redshift z = 0.8. Using the data derived by HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission, we found the absorption N_H = 8.8 -2.9/+3.1 x 10^22 cm^-2 and the visual extinction A_V = 49 -16/+17 mag in the host galaxy. If this is the case, no detection of any optical transient would be quite reasonable. The absorption derived by the Swift XRT observations of the afterglow is fully consistent with those obtained from the early HETE-2 observation of the prompt emission. Our analysis implies an interpretation that the absorbing medium could be outside external shock at R ~ 10^16 cm, which may be a dusty molecular cloud., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ letter

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) fall into two classes: short-hard and long-soft bursts. The latter are now known to have X-ray and optical afterglows, to occur at cosmological distances in star-forming galaxies, and to be associated with the explosion of massive stars. In contrast, the distance scale, the energy scale, and the progenitors of short bursts have remained a mystery. Here we report the discovery of a short-hard burst whose accurate localization has led to follow-up observations that have identified the X-ray afterglow and (for the first time) the optical afterglow of a short-hard burst. These, in turn, have led to identification of the host galaxy of the burst as a late-type galaxy at z=0.16 showing that at least some short-hard bursts occur at cosmological distances in the outskirts of galaxies, and are likely to be due to the merging of compact binaries., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. [Abridged] Very recently, relations between the peak energy of Gamma-Ray Burst burst spectra, the isotropic-equivalent energy of the burst, and the radiated energy of the burst have been found. In a way that is exactly analogous to the way in which the relation between the peak luminosity and the rate of decline of the light curve of Type Ia supernovae can be used to make Type Ia supernovae excellent standard candles for cosmology, so too, the relations between Epk, Eiso, and Egamma point toward a methodology for using GRBs as excellent standard candles for cosmology. In addition, GRBs occur over the broad redshift range from z=0.1 to at least z=4.5, and both they and their afterglows are easily detectable out to z > 8. Thus GRBs show great promise as cosmological ``yardsticks'' to measure the rate of expansion of the universe over time, and therefore the properties of dark energy (i.e., Omega_M, Omega_Lambda, w_0, and w_a). We describe a concept for a possible MIDEX-class mission dedicated to using GRBs to constrain the properties of dark energy that would obtain these quantities for > 800 bursts in the redshift range 0.1 >~ z <~ 10 during a 2-year mission. This burst sample would enable both Omega_M and w_0 to be determined to +/- 0.07 and +/- 0.06 (68% CL), respectively, and w_a to be significantly constrained., Comment: White paper submitted to the Dark Energy Task Force. 37 pages

GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 constitute half the sample of gamma-ray bursts with a measured redshift greater than 3. This paper presents the temporal and spectral properties of these two gamma-ray bursts detected and localized with HETE-2. While they have nearly identical redshifts (z=3.20 for GRB 020124, and z=3.37 for GRB 030323), these two GRBs span about an order of magnitude in fluence, thus sampling distinct regions of the GRB luminosity function. The properties of these two bursts are compared with those of the bulk of the GRB population detected by HETE-2. We also discuss the energetics of GRB 020124 and GRB 030323 and show that they are compatible with the Epeak - Eiso relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002). Finally, we compute the maximum redshifts at which these bursts could have been detected by HETE-2 and we address various issues connected with the detection and localization of high-z GRBs., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of two recent GRB afterglows observed with the Low Energy Transmission Gratings on Chandra. The afterglows to GRBs 030328 and 041006 are detected beginning 15.33 and 16.8 hours after each burst, respectively, and are observed to fade in time during each ~90 ksec observation. We fit for the continuum emission in each full data set and for the data sliced into half and quarter time sections. For both afterglows, the continuum emission is well described by an absorbed power-law model, and the model parameters describing the absorption and spectral slope do not appear to evolve in time. We perform a careful search for deviations from the model continua for the full and time-sliced data and find no evidence for significant (>~3sigma) narrow emission/absorption lines or edges. The lack of detections implies that line emission--if it is a general feature in GRB X-ray afterglows--occurs early (t~0.3 days in the source frame) and/or is short-lived (dt<~10 ksec). We propose a novel multivariate Monte Carlo method as an efficient and flexible approach to analyzing extended X-ray sources with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on XMM Newton. A multi-dimensional interpolation method is used to efficiently calculate the response function for the RGS in conjunction with an arbitrary spatially-varying spectral model. Several methods of event comparison that effectively compare the multivariate RGS data are discussed. The use of a multi-dimensional instrument Monte Carlo also creates many opportunities for the use of complex astrophysical Monte Carlo calculations in diffuse X-ray spectroscopy. We describe and discuss the global properties of 45 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by HETE-2 during the first three years of its mission, focusing on the properties of X-Ray Flashes (XRFs) and X-ray-rich GRBs (XRRs). We find that the numbers of XRFs, XRRs, and GRBs are comparable. We find that the durations and the sky distributions of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs. We also find that the spectral properties of XRFs and XRRs are similar to those of GRBs, except that the values of the peak energy $E^{\rm obs}_{\rm peak}$ of the burst spectrum in $\nu F_\nu$, the peak energy flux $\Fp$, and the energy fluence $S_E$ of XRFs are much smaller -- and those of XRRs are smaller -- than those of GRBs. Finally, we find that the distributions of all three kinds of bursts form a continuum in the [$S_E$(2-30 keV),$S_E$(30-400) keV]-plane, the [$S_E$(2-400 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane, and the [$F_{\rm peak}$(50-300 keV), $E_{\rm peak}$]-plane. We report High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE-2) Wide Field X-ray Monitor/French Gamma Telescope observations of XRF030723 along with observations of the XRF afterglow made using the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observed peak energy E_pk_obs of the nu F_nu burst spectrum is found to lie within (or below) the WXM 2-25 keV passband at 98.5% confidence, and no counts are detected above 30 keV. Our best fit value is E_pk_obs=8.4+3.5/-3.4 keV. The ratio of X-ray to Gamma-ray flux for the burst follows a correlation found for GRBs observed with HETE-2, and the duration of the burst is similar to that typical of long-duration GRBs. If we require that the burst isotropic equivalent energy E_iso and E_pk_rest satisfy the relation discovered by Amati et al. (2002), a redshift of z=0.38+0.36/-0.18 can be determined, in agreement with constraints determined from optical observations. We are able to fit the X-ray afterglow spectrum and to measure its temporal fade. Although the best-fit fade is shallower than the concurrent fade in the optical, the spectral similarity between the two bands indicates that the X-ray fade may actually trace the optical fade. If this is the case, the late time rebrightening observed in the optical cannot be due to a supernova bump. We interpret the prompt and afterglow X-ray emission as arising from a jetted GRB observed off-axis and possibly viewed through a complex circumburst medium due to a progenitor wind., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, to appear in ApJ

An exceptionally intense gamma-ray burst, GRB030329, was detected and localized by the instruments on board the High Energy Transient Explorer satellite (HETE) at 11:37:14 UT on 29 March 2003. The burst consisted of two \~10s pulses of roughly equal brightness and an X-ray tail lasting >100s. The energy fluence in the 30-400 keV energy band was 1.08e-4 erg/cm2, making GRB030329 one of the brightest GRBs ever detected. Communication of a 2 arcmin error box 73 minutes after the burst allowed the rapid detection of a counterpart in the optical, X-ray, radio and the ensuing discovery of a supernova with most unusual characteristics. Analyses of the burst lightcurves reveal the presence of a distinct, bright, soft X-ray component underlying the main GRB: the 2-10 keV fluence of this component is ~7e-6 erg/cm2. The main pulses of GRB030329 were preceded by two soft, faint, non-thermal bumps. The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528. The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the X-ray source. We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM data for GRB011211 and GRB030227. The X-ray-flash XRF030723 was detected by the HETE satellite and rapidly disseminated, allowing for an optical transient to be detected ~1 day after the burst. We discuss observations in the optical with Magellan, which confirmed the fade of the optical transient. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source spatially coincident with the optical transient. We present spectral fits to the X-ray data. We also discuss the possibility that the source underwent a rebrightening in the X-rays, as was observed in the optical. The HETE-2 mission has been highly productive. It has observed more than 250 GRBs so far. It is currently localizing 25 - 30 GRBs per year, and has localized 43 GRBs to date. Twenty-one of these localizations have led to the detection of X-ray, optical, or radio afterglows, and as of now, 11 of the bursts with afterglows have redshift determinations. HETE-2 has also observed more than 45 bursts from soft gamma-ray repeaters, and more than 700 X-ray bursts. HETE-2 has confirmed the connection between GRBs and Type Ic supernovae, a singular achievement and certainly one of the scientific highlights of the mission so far. It has provided evidence that the isotropic-equivalent energies and luminosities of GRBs may be correlated with redshift; such a correlation would imply that GRBs and their progenitors evolve strongly with redshift. Both of these results have profound implications for the nature of GRB progenitors and for the use of GRBs as a probe of cosmology and the early universe. HETE-2 has placed severe constraints on any X-ray or optical afterglow of a short GRB. We present XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of X-ray clusters and groups of galaxies. We demonstrate the failure of the standard cooling-flow model to describe the soft X-ray spectrum of clusters of galaxies. We also emphasize several new developments in the study of the soft X-ray spectrum of cooling flows. Although there is some uncertainty in the expected mass deposition rate for any individual cluster, we show that high resolution RGS spectra robustly demonstrate that the expected line emission from the isobaric cooling-flow model is absent below 1/3 of the background temperature rather than below a fixed temperature in all clusters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the best-resolved cluster spectra are inconsistent with the predicted shape of the differential luminosity distribution and the measured distribution is tilted to higher temperatures. These observations create several fine-tuning challenges for current theoretical explanations for the soft X-ray cooling-flow problem. We report HETE-2 WXM/FREGATE observations of the X-ray flash, XRF 020903. This event was extremely soft: the ratio log(S_X/S_gamma) = 0.7, where S_X and S_gamma are the fluences in the 2-30 and 30-400 keV energy bands, is the most extreme value observed so far by HETE-2. In addition, the spectrum has an observed peak energy E^{obs}_{peak} < 5.0 keV (99.7 % probability upper limit) and no photons were detected above ~10 keV. The burst is shorter at higher energies, which is similar to the behavior of long GRBs. We consider the possibility that the burst lies at very high redshift and that the low value of E^{obs}_{peak} is due to the cosmological redshift, and show that this is very unlikely. We find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with the relation between the fluences S(7-30 keV) and S(30-400 keV) found by Barraud et al. for GRBs and X-ray-rich GRBs, and are consistent with the extension by a decade of the hardness-intensity correlation (Mallozzi et al. 1995) found by the same authors. Assuming that XRF 020903 lies at a redshift z = 0.25 as implied by the host galaxy of the candidate optical and radio afterglows of this burst, we find that the properties of XRF 020903 are consistent with an extension by a factor ~300 of the relation between the isotropic-equivalent energy E_iso and the peak E_peak of the nu F_nu spectrum (in the source frame of the burst) found by Amati et al. for GRBs. The results presented in this paper therefore provide evidence that XRFs, X-ray-rich GRBs, and GRBs form a continuum and are a single phenomenon. We report on the detection of an emission line near 1.3 keV, which we associate with blue-shifted hydrogen-like sulfur (S XVI), in a 76.8 ksec Chandra HETGS spectrum of the afterglow of GRB 020813. The line is detected at 3.3 sigma significance. We also find marginal evidence for a line possibly due to hydrogen-like silicon (Si XIV) with the same blue-shift. A line from Fe is not detected, though a very low significance Ni feature may be present. A thermal model fits the data adequately, but a reflection model may provide a better fit. There is marginal evidence that the equivalent width of the S XVI line decrease as the burst fades. We infer from these results that a supernova likely occurred >~ 2 months prior to the GRB. We find no discrete or variable spectral features in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of the GRB 021004 afterglow., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ

A bright, x-ray-rich GRB was detected by HETE-2 at 11:18:34.03 UT on 11 Dec 2002. The WXM localization was to 14' and relayed to the GCN 22 s after the start of the burst. The ground SXC localization was within 2' of R.A. 08h 09m 00s, Dec 06d 44' 20" (J2000). GRB021211 consists of a single, FRED-like pulse with t90s of 2.3 s (85-400 keV) and 8.5 s (2-10 keV). The peak photon number and photon energy fluxes in the 2-400 keV band, are 34.0 +/- 1.8 ph cm^-2 s^-1 and 1.68 +/- 0.11 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 s^-1, respectively. The energy fluences in the 2-30 keV and 30-400 kev energy bands are S_X = 1.36 +/- 0.05 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2 and S_gamma 2.17 +/- 0.15 x 10^-6 erg cm^-2, respectively. Thus GRB021211 is an X-ray-rich GRB (S_X/S_gamma = 0.63 > 0.32). The spectrum is well-fit by a Band function (alpha = -0.805, beta = -2.37, E_peak = 46.8 keV). The prompt localization allowed the detection of an optical afterglow for what would otherwise have been an ``optically dark'' GRB. GRB 021211 demonstrates that some fraction of burst afterglows are ``optically dark'' because their optical afterglows at times > 1 hr after the burst are very faint, and thus have often escaped detection. In many clusters of galaxies, the cooling time at the core of the intracluster medium is much less than the age of the system, suggesting that the the gas should continually lose energy by radiation. Simple thermodynamic arguments then require that the expected "cooling flow" should exhibit a specific spectroscopic signature, characterized by a differential emission measure distribution that is inversely proportional to the cooling function of the plasma. That prediction can be quantitatively tested for the first time by the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) experiment on XMM-Newton, which provides high resolution X-ray spectra, even for moderately extended sources like clusters. We present RGS data on 14 separate cooling flow clusters, sampling a very wide range in mass deposition rate. Surprisingly, in all cases we find a systematic deficit of low temperature emission relative to the predictions of the cooling flow models. However, we do see evidence for cooling flow gas at temperatures just below the cluster background temperature, $T_0$, roughly down to $T_0/2$. These results are difficult to reconcile with most of the possible explanations for the cooling flow problem that have been proposed to date. We also present RGS data on the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 4636. In this case, we detect evidence for resonance emission line scattering of high oscillator strength Fe L-shell emission lines within the gaseous halo of the galaxy. The detection of that effect leads to very tight constraints on physical conditions within the halo. We discuss multivariate Monte Carlo methods appropriate for X-ray dispersive spectrometers. Dispersive spectrometers have many advantages for high resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray band. Analysis of data from these instruments is complicated by the fact that the instrument response functions are multi-dimensional and relatively few X-ray photons are detected from astrophysical sources. Monte Carlo methods are the natural solution to these challenges, but techniques for their use are not well developed. We describe a number of methods to produce a highly efficient and flexible multivariate Monte Carlo. These techniques include multi-dimensional response interpolation and multi-dimensional event comparison. We discuss how these methods have been extensively used in the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer in-flight calibration program. We present high resolution X-ray spectra of 14 putative cooling-flow clusters of galaxies obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton. The clusters in the sample span a large range of temperatures and mass deposition rates. Various of these spectra exhibit line emission from O VIII, Ne X, Mg XII & XI, Al XIII & XII, Si XIV & XIII, N VII, and C VI as well as all Fe L ions. The spectra exhibit strong emission from cool plasma at just below the ambient temperature, $T_0$, down to $T_0/2$, but also exhibit a severe deficit of emission, relative to the predictions of the isobaric cooling-flow model at lower temperatures ($<$ $T_0/3$). In addition, the best-resolved spectra show emission throughout the entire X-ray temperature range, but increasingly less emission at lower temperatures than the cooling-flow model would predict. These results are difficult to reconcile with simple prescriptions for distorting the emission measure distribution, e.g. by including additional heating or rapid cooling terms. We enumerate some theoretical difficulties in understanding the soft X-ray spectra of cooling-flows independent of the classic problem of the failure to detect the cooling-flow sink. Empirically, the differential luminosity distribution is consistent with being proportional to the temperature to the power of $\approx$ 1 to 2, instead of being independent of the temperature, as expected in the standard multi-phase model. We present a spectral analysis of 35 GRBs detected with the HETE-2 gamma-ray detectors (the FREGATE instrument) in the energy range 7-400 keV. The GRB sample analyzed is made of GRBs localized with the Wide Field X-ray Monitor onboard HETE-2 or with the GRB Interplanetary Network. We derive the spectral parameters of the time-integrated spectra, and present the distribution of the low-energy photon index, alpha, and of the peak energy, e_peak . The {\it HETE-2} (hereafter \HETE) French Gamma Telescope (FREGATE) and the Wide-field X-ray Monitor (WXM) instruments detected a short ($t_{50} = 360$ msec in the FREGATE 85-300 keV energy band), hard gamma-ray burst (GRB) that occurred at 1578.72 SOD (00:26:18.72 UT) on 31 May 2002. The WXM flight localization software produced a valid location in spacecraft (relative) coordinates. However, since no on-board real-time star camera aspect was available, an absolute localization could not be disseminated. A preliminary localization was reported as a GCN Position Notice at 01:54:22 UT, 88 min after the burst. Further ground analysis produced a refined localization, which can be expressed as a 90% confidence rectangle that is 67 arcminutes in RA and 43 arcminutes in Dec (90% confidence region), centered at RA = +15$^{\rm h}$ 14$^{\rm m}$ 45$^{\rm s}$, Dec = -19$^\circ$ 21\arcmin 35\arcsec (J2000). An IPN localization of the burst was disseminated 18 hours after the GRB (Hurley et al. 2002b). A refined IPN localization was disseminated $\approx$ 5 days after the burst. This hexagonal-shaped localization error region is centered on RA = 15$^{\rm h}$ 15$^{\rm m}$ 03.57$^{\rm s}$, -19$^\circ$ 24\arcmin 51.00\arcsec (J2000), and has an area of $\approx$ 22 square arcminutes (99.7% confidence region). The prompt localization of this short, hard GRB by \HETE and the anti-Sun pointing of the \HETE instruments, coupled with the refinement of the localization by the IPN, has made possible rapid follow-up observations of the burst at radio, optical, and X-ray wavelengths., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. We present high resolution X-ray spectra of 14 cooling-flow X-ray clusters and groups obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on XMM-Newton. The spectra exhibit line emission from a number of Fe L charge states as well as O VIII, Mg XII, Ne X, Si XIV & XIII, N VII, and C VI. All spectra show a deficit of soft X-ray lines predicted from the isobaric multi-phase spectral model as compared with morphological mass deposition rates from spatially-resolved spectroscopy with the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC). We present some weak detections of plasma several times cooler than the ambient cluster temperatures. The results further suggest that either morphological mass deposition rates systematically overestimate the actual cooling rate or the emission measure of cooling-flows has a much steeper distribution than that predicted by a simple isobaric multi-phase model. On September 21 at 18950.56 SOD (05:15:50.56) UT the FREGATE gamma-ray instrument on the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) detected a bright gamma-ray burst (GRB). The burst was also seen by the X-detector on the WXM X-ray instrument and was therefore well-localized in the X direction; however, the burst was outside the fully-coded field-of-view of the WXM Y-detector, and therefore information on the Y direction of the burst was limited. Cross-correlation of the HETE and Ulysses time histories yielded an Interplanetary Network (IPN) annulus that crosses the HETE error strip at a ~45 degree angle. The intersection of the HETE error strip and the IPN annulus produces a diamond-shaped error region for the location of the burst having an area of 310 square arcminutes. Based on the FREGATE and WXM light curves, the duration of the burst is characterized by a t90 = 18.4 s in the WXM 4 - 25 keV energy range, and 23.8 s and 21.8 s in the FREGATE 6 - 40 and 32 - 400 keV energy ranges, respectively. The fluence of the burst in these same energy ranges is 4.8 10^{-6}, 5.5 10^{-6}, and 11.4 10^{-6} erg cm^{-2}, respectively. Subsequent optical and radio observations by ground-based observers have identified the afterglow of GRB010921 and determined an apparent redshift of z = 0.450., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We present the first high spectral resolution X-ray observation of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on-board the XMM-Newton Observatory. The resulting spectrum contains a wealth of emission lines from various charge states of oxygen, neon, magnesium, and iron. Examination of the cross-dispersion profiles of several of these lines provides clear, unambiguous evidence of resonance scattering by the highest oscillator strength lines, as well as a weak temperature gradient in the inner regions of the interstellar medium. We invoke a sophisticated new Monte Carlo technique which allows us to properly account for these effects in performing quantitative fits to the spectrum. Our spectral fits are not subject to many of the systematics that have plagued earlier investigations. The derived metal abundances are higher than have been inferred from prior, lower spectral resolution observations of this source (Awaki et al. 1994), but are still incompatible with conventional chemical enrichment models of elliptical galaxies. In addition, our data are incompatible with standard cooling flow models for this system - our derived upper limit to the mass deposition rate is below the predicted value by a factor of 3--5., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; submitted to ApJ

The basic theory of torque free precession (TFP) of the outer crust of a neutron star (NS) as the signature of the approach to NS breakup is a viable explanation of the uniform properties of kHz Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPO) observed in X-rays emitted by Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) sources. The theory outlined in this paper relates the intrinsic properties of NS structure to the observed kHz frequencies. The range of kHz frequencies and the observed quality factors (Qs) are also explained by this simple dynamical model. A scenario that begins with the melting of the inner crust of an LMXB NS creates the conditions necessary for the generation of kHz QPO. The theory relates the ratio of the observed kHz frequencies to the ratios of the components of the moments of inertia of the NS, thereby tightly constraining the equation of state (EOS) of NS matter (polytrope index ~1.0). The TFP model is in strong contrast to existing models which primarily relate the kHz QPO phenomenon to the physics of gas dynamics near the inner edge of the accretion disk and the transition flow onto the surface of the NS. We suggest the possibility of the direct detection of very low frequency (~1 kHz) radio waves from magnetic dipole radiation and also predict kHz gravitational wave emission from the LMXB Sco X-1 that may be detectable by LIGO. We present detailed spatially-resolved spectroscopy results of the observation of Abell 1835 using the European Photon Imaging Cameras (EPIC) and the Reflection Grating Spectrometers (RGS) on the XMM-Newton observatory. Abell 1835 is a luminous ($10^{46}$ ergs ${s}^{-1}$), medium redshift ($z=0.2523$), X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies. The observations support the interpretation that large amounts of cool gas are present in a multi-phase medium surrounded by a hot ($kT_{e}$=8.2 keV) outer envelope. We detect O VIII Ly$\alpha$ and two Fe XXIV complexes in the RGS spectrum. The emission measure of the cool gas below $kT_{e}$=2.7 keV is much lower than expected from standard cooling-flow models, suggesting either a more complicated cooling process than simple isobaric radiative cooling or differential cold absorption of the cooler gas., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by A&A letters, XMM issue

We report the discovery of kHz fluctuations, including quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) at ~330 Hz and ~760 Hz and a broadband kHz continuum in the power density spectrum of the high mass X-ray binary pulsar Centaurus X-3. These observations of Cen X-3 were carried out with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The fluctuation spectrum is flat from mHz to a few Hz, then steepens to $f^{-2}$ behavior between a few Hz and ~100 Hz. Above a hundred Hz, the spectrum shows the QPO features, plus a flat continuum extending to ~1200 Hz and then falling out to ~1800 Hz. These results, which required the co-adding three days of observations of Cen X-3, are at least as fast as the fastest known variations in X-ray emission from an accreting compact object (kHz QPO in LMXB sources) and probably faster since extension to ~1800 Hz is indicated by the most likely parameterization of the data. Multi-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of optically thick plasma flow onto the magnetic poles of an accreting neutron star show that the fluctuations at frequencies above 100 Hz are consistent with photon bubble turbulence and oscillations (PBO) previously predicted to be observable in this source. For a polar cap opening angle of 0.25 radians, we show that the spectral form above 100 Hz is reproduced by the simulations, including the frequencies of the QPO and the relative power in the QPO and the kHz continuum. This has resulted in the first model-dependent measurement of the polar cap size of an X-ray pulsar., Comment: received ApJ: April 1, 1999 accepted ApJ: September 1, 1999

The All-Sky Monitor (ASM) on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) has been used to localize thirteen confirmed X-ray counterparts to Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected over three years of operation. We quantify the errors in ASM localizations of brief transient sources by using observations of persistent sources with well-known locations. We apply the results of this analysis to obtain accurate error boxes with reliable confidence levels for the thirteen GRBs. In six of these thirteen cases, multiple detections by the ASM allow the positions to be localized to a diamond of order ~15' x 3'. In five further cases, the Interplanetary Network (IPN) constrains the usually ~3 deg. x 3' (full-width) ASM error box to an area of a few tens of square arcminutes. The All-Sky Monitor on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has been monitoring the sky in the 1.5 - 12 keV band since late February. The instrument consists of three coded-aperture cameras which can be rotated to view different regions by a motorized drive assembly. Intensities of ~100 known sources are obtained via least-square fits of shadow patterns to the data and compiled to form x-ray light curves. Six orbital periodicities and four long-term periodicities, all previously known, have been detected in these light curves. Searches for additional sources have also been conducted. X-ray light curves for the Crab Nebula, Cyg X-1, 4U 1705-44, GRO J1655-40, and SMC X-1 are reported. We present arcsecond resolution mid-infrared (8--13 $\mu$m) images and photometry of four young stellar objects (YSOs)~--- L1551-IRS5, HL~Tau, AS~205, and AS~209 (V1121~Oph)~--- taken with the Berkeley Mid-Infrared Camera. For AS~205, a known T Tauri binary, we also present near-infrared JHK images and HKL$^{\prime}$ speckle imaging data. All three single stars are unresolved in our mid-IR images. Our data is the first to resolve in the mid-IR both components of the close binary AS~205 (projected separation $\sim$1.3$^{\prime \prime}$ (210~A.U.)). AS~205~North is the IR brighter star in our data while published observations find it to be the optically fainter star. Pre-main sequence evolutionary models suggest the AS~205 system is non-coeval; we discuss possible explanations for this result and comment on the circumstellar material and evolutionary status of this young binary. Nearly all of our objects exhibit changes in their mid-IR flux in measurements separated by intervals of days up to many years; the variations range from 30--300\%. We speculate that the cause of the variability lies in the accretion disks of these objects; the data suggest disk accretion rate fluctuations of nearly an order of magnitude.
