Abstract

We estimate black hole masses (M$_{\rm BH}$) for 14 gravitationally lensed quasars using the Balmer lines along with estimates based on MgII and CIV emission lines for four and two of them, respectively. We compare with results obtained for other lensed quasars. We use spectroscopic data from the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), Magellan and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to measure the FWHM of the broad emission lines. Combined with the bolometric luminosity measured from the spectra energy distribution, we estimate M$_{\rm BH}$ including uncertainties from microlensing and variability. We obtain MBH using the single-epoch method from the H$\alpha$ and/or H$\beta$ broad emission lines for 14 lensed quasars, including the first estimates for QJ0158-4325, HE0512-3329 and WFI2026-4536. The masses are typical of non-lensed quasars of similar luminosity, and the implied Eddington ratios are typical. Abstract

The quadruple lensed system WGD2038-4008 was recently discovered with the help of new techniques and observations. Even though black hole mass has been estimated for lensed quasars, it has been calculated mostly for one broad emission line of one image, but the images could be affected by microlensing, affecting the results. We present black hole mass (MBH) estimations for images A and B using the three most prominent broad emission lines (H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and MgII) obtained in one single-epoch spectra. This is the first time the mass is estimated in a lensed quasar in two images, allowing us to disentangle the effects of microlensing. We used the X-shooter instrument mounted in VLT, to observe this system taking advantage of its wide spectral range. Using the flux ratio between the continuum and the core of the emission lines we analyzed if microlensing was present in the continuum source. We obtained MBH using the single-epoch method with the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines from the monochromatic luminosity and the velocity width. The luminosity at 3000 \r{A} was obtained using the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of image A while the luminosity at 5100 \r{A} was estimated directly from the spectra. The average MBH between the images obtained was $\rm log_{10}$(M$_{BH}/M_{\odot}$) = 8.27 $\pm$ 1.05, 8.25 $\pm$ 0.32 and 8.59 $\pm$ 0.35 for MgII, H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ respectively. We find Eddington ratios similar to those measured in the literature for unlensed low-luminosity quasars. Microlensing of -0.16 $\pm$ 0.06 mag. in the continuum was found but the induced error in the MBH is minor compared to the one associated to the macromodel magnification. We also obtained the accretion disk size using the MBH for the three emission lines, obtaining an average value of $\rm log_{10}(r_{s}/cm)$ = 15.3 +/- 0.63, which is in agreement with theoretical estimates.

Abstract

Los autores sostienen, desde su perspectiva, que los modelos de reforma aún parecen insuficientes para responder a los desafíos de la sociedad contemporánea; que la educación requiere de un cambio profundo, a nivel paradigmático, más allá de los ajustes organizacionales, económicos y curriculares que ya vienen ocurriendo. El hombre, sujeto/objeto del quehacer educativo, debe constituirse en el centro de la preocupación refundadora de la educación. Esto significa incorporar nuevas corrientes de pensamiento, que conciben al hombre de manera más integral no sólo como sujeto racional, sino también, como un ser con corporalidad, con emociones y que habita en el lenguaje.

Abstract

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women with 85% of the mortality burden occurring in less-developed regions of the world. The Cervix Cancer Research Network (CCRN) was founded by the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup (GCIG) with a mission to improve outcomes in cervix cancer by increasing access to high-quality clinical trials worldwide, with particular attention to less-developed, underrepresented sites. The CCRN held its second international educational symposium in Mexico City with ninety participants from fifteen Latin America countries in January 2017. The purpose of this symposium was to advance knowledge in cervix cancer therapy, promote recruitment to CCRN clinical trials, and to identify relevant future CCRN clinical trial concepts that could improve global care standards for women with cervical cancer.

Abstract

806 farmers were surveyed in Nicaragua, Costa Rica & Guatemala, using COSA® format to determine the socio economic and environmental impact of coffee certification. 40 farmers from each certification (organic, fair trade (FT), Rainforest Alliance (RA), CAFE Practices (CP) and Utz Certified) were interviewed and compared with 80 non-certified farmers on each country. Results showed better performance of environmental indicators (Carbon footprint) in organic farms. Economic impacts were affected by farm altitude and size. RA and CP certified farms were in general larger farms (> 10 has), with higher production costs and but higher productivity resulting in greater income per hectare. Utz, Organic and FT were smaller farms, with lower production costs and lower productivity. Guatemala did not show differences in certified vs conventional sales prices for any seal. Although organic farms had on average the best coffee price they had one of the lowest income due to low productivity.

Abstract

In a group of patients who showed repeated resorption or rejection of the transplanted cartilage graft, the immune response against a broad spectrum of collagen, namely, types I, II, VI, IX and XI, was investigated. We found a humoral immune reactivity against collagen type IX und XI, and to a lesser degree against collagen type I, demonstrating a specific immune response to these matrix collagens. These data suggest that some of the unsuccessful results obtained with cartilage grafts may be influenced by factors independent of the operative technique, such as immunological reactions.

Abstract

In order to overcome the shortage of ^3\mathrm He detectors for subcritical experiments in the IPEN/MB-01 reactor, some experiments were performed employing less sensitive detectors, such as BF3, and a logic input module, which sums the counts from different detectors. Through microscopic and macroscopic neutron noise technique, it was possible to obtain, respectively, Rossi- $\alpha $ distribution and Auto Power Spectral Densities (APSD) for each detector configuration and various subcritical levels, and the prompt neutron decay constant ( $\alpha $ ) was extracted through a least squares procedure. In addition, Cross Power Spectral Densities (CPSD) were acquired for different types of detectors and the correlation among those detectors was confirmed. It was also observed that there was no loss of correlation among the neutron pulses, and therefore, the CPSD curves demonstrated the presence of correlated events. The $\alpha $ parameter was used as an indicator for the comparison of the results and for the quality of the experimental data. The obtained values demonstrate that the sum of counts technique does not present loss of information (correlated neutrons) even for different models and types of detectors, suggesting that the technique may be employed in neutron noise measurements for subcritical reactivity. 50. A Proposal for Benchmarking 235U Nuclear Data

Abstract

AbstractTwo experiments performed at the IPEN/MB-01 reactor are suggested to serve as a benchmark problem to verify mainly the adequacy of the 235U nuclear data for criticality analyses and for the isothermal reactivity coefficient determination of thermal reactors. The experiments are claimed to be well-defined, and they are suitable for a benchmark problem partially due to their small uncertainties and partially due to the lack of any sort of calculated correction factors or any quantity that comes either from the calculational methodologies or from another experiment. The isothermal experiment fulfills a specific need to introduce a reactor response that is sensitive to the 235U cross-section shape below 5 meV. This feature could be accomplished due mainly to the very precise control bank system characteristics of the IPEN/MB-01 reactor. The MCNP-4B calculational analyses reveal that the most recent 235U evaluation (Leal-Derrien-Larson’s evaluation) incorporated in ENDF/B-VI release 5 performs well in the theory-experiment result comparisons of the aforementioned experiments. Particularly in the isothermal experiment, ENDF/B-VI release 5 produces results that even considering the deviations inherent to the Monte Carlo method meet the desired accuracy (±1.0 pcm/°C) for the isothermal reactivity coefficient determination in contrast to the JEF-2.2 and JENDL-3.2 libraries, which produce unacceptably high keffresults. The main reasons are the 235U nuclear data in the case of JEF-2.2 and the nuclear data of both 235U and iron in the case of JENDL-3.2.
