Flat nanophotonic devices hold a great potential to process diffractive optical information within ultra-thin submicron thickness. In particular, optical filtering of transmissive angular spectrum in the free space is an essential functionality in diffractive optics. Here, we propose a novel configuration and theoretical study of an ultrathin transmissive angular filtering metamaterial for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Based on the adiabatically tapered plasmonic waveguide metamaterial in the visible regime, full color angle-selective transmission is achieved near the optic axis including the representative blue (473 nm), green (532 nm), and red (633 nm) colors. By providing further analysis on bandwidth extension, we envision that the proposed flat angular filtering mechanism in the visible range promises practical value and potential for a variety of metamaterial-assisted compact diffractive imaging and sensing applications such as augmented or virtual reality displays and biomedical optical sensors.

Effective dynamic modulation of visible light properties has been significantly desired for advanced imaging and sensing technologies. In particular, phase-change materials have attracted much attention as active material platforms owing to their broadband tunability of optical dielectric functions induced by the temperature-dependent phase-changes. However, their uses for visible light modulators are still limited to meet multi-objective high performance owing to the low material quality factor and active tunability in the visible regime. Here, a design strategy of phase-change metafilm absorber is demonstrated by making the use of the material drawbacks and extending design degree of freedom. By engineering tunability of effective anisotropic permittivity tensor of VO2-Ag metafilm around near-unity absorption conditions, strong dynamic modulation of reflection wave is achieved with near-unity modulation depth at desired wavelength regions without sacrificing bandwidth and efficiency. By leveraging effective medium theory of metamaterial and coupled mode theory, the intuitive design rules and theoretical backgrounds are suggested. It is also noteworthy that the dynamic optical applications of intensity modulation, coloring, and polarization rotation are enabled in a single device. By virtue of ultrathin flat configuration of a metafilm absorber, design extensibility of reflection spectrum is also verified. It is envisioned that our simple and powerful strategy would play a robust role in development of miniaturized light modulating pixels and a variety of photonic and optoelectronic applications.

Nano-structural colour pixels have attracted much attention as promising solutions for compact display devices. However, it is difficult to miniaturize and integrate conventional transmissive colour filtering components for high resolution pixels within subwavelength scale without sacrificing colour depth. Here, we propose a novel colour pixel structure using bi-layered hybrid metasurfaces that are composed of aluminum nanograting and amorphous silicon nanorod layers. The independent high-contrast control of resonance intensity and spectral position is achieved by anisotropic Mie resonances and cavity effect between stacked two metasurfaces. Moreover, the proposed structures permit the wide colour gamut through the novel physical principles. In addition, a meta-pixel which can provide gradual tuning of colour is demonstrated to obtain high colour depth. The proposed structures are expected to be fruitful for the development of next generation display and imaging systems.

Controlling the polarization state of light has been a significant issue for various integrated optical devices such as optical imaging, sensors, and communications. Recent advances in metamaterials enable the optical elements for controlling light to be miniaturized and to have various multi-functions in subwavelength scale. However, a conventional approach of a circular polarizer has an inherent limitation to eliminate the unwanted circular polarization, which means that the efficiency varies significantly depending on the polarization state of incident light. Here, we propose a novel concept of a circular polarizer by combining two functions of transmission and conversion for orthogonal circular polarizations with a total thickness of 440 nm. The proposed three-layer metasurface composed of rotating silver nanorods transmits the left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) light with maintaining its own polarization state, whereas the right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) light is converted into LCP light. Regardless of the polarization state of incoming light, the polarization of light in the last medium is LCP state in the broadband operating wavelength range from 800 nm to 1100 nm. The converted RCP and the transmitted LCP have efficiencies of up to 48.5% and 42.3%, respectively. Thus the proposed metasurface serves as a stable circular polarizer for a randomly polarized light. In addition, high-efficiency asymmetric transmission of about 0.47 is achieved at the same time due to the conversion characteristic of RCP component. The proposed metasurface has the significance as an ultra-thin optical element applicable to optical switching, sensors, and communications in unidirectional channel as well as a broadband circular polarizer for randomly polarized light.

Various optical imaging devices have been significantly developed as commercial products including digital cameras, smartphone displays, and three-dimensional microscopes in the electronic industry until now. Such a rapid development makes many people expect more advanced devices which may be not only multifunctional but also smaller and lighter. However, we cannot achieve it only by scaling down conventional optic systems due to the limits of inherent volume needed in classical optic parts. Nanophotonics can be a potential candidate to overcome the intrinsic problem. In particular, plasmonic and metasurface nanostructures have been briskly studied in recent years because they are able to control input lights within a few hundred nanometers of a thin layer. Here we introduce some representative cases of them for optical imaging. We firstly propose a cavity-aperture, which is comprised of a cavity and a metal nanoaperture, to change the color and intensity of the light transmitted through a single pixel. Because a cavity organizes various lights having different wavelengths and a nanoaperture spatially selects one of them without a serious distortion of a light field distribution, we can extract a light with a specific wavelength and amplitude using the cavity-aperture. Some metasurface nanostructures are also suggested for a broadband polarimeter, circular polarizer, directional switching, and holographic imaging. They are useful in dramatically miniaturizing optical devices due to their thin and compact sizes. We expect these plasmonic and metasurface nanostructures have a potential for advanced portable imaging systems.

In this paper, meta-pixels which can generate various colors with wide gamut using multi-layered metasurfaces were demonstrated. Also, straightforward algorithms to tune hue, saturation and value of the generated colors were demonstrated.

We propose a highly sensitive hybrid-plasmonic sensor based on thin-gold nanoslit arrays. The transmission characteristics of gold nanoslit arrays are analyzed as changing the thickness of gold layer. The surface plasmon polariton mode excited on the sensing medium, which is sensitive to refractive index change of the sensing medium, is strengthened by reducing the thickness of the gold layer. A design rule is suggested that steeper dispersion curve of the surface plasmon polariton mode leads to higher sensitivity. For the dispersion engineering, hybrid-plasmonic structure, which consists of thin-gold nanoslit arrays, sensing region and high refractive index dielectric space is introduced. The proposed sensor structure with period of 700 nm shows the improved sensitivity up to 1080 nm/RIU (refractive index unit), and the surface sensitivity is extremely enhanced.

We numerically analyzed the refractive index sensing performance of the two-dimensional array of plasmonic V-shaped grooves. The structural parameters are optimized to show a sharp and large reflectance dip with desired sensing region (n=1.33). Acquiring the sensitivity of the environmental refractive index as 400 nm/RIU in the visible region, FWHM of the dip is ∼5 nm. It shows that the proposed structure has extreme value of quality factor and good extinction ratio. The localized mode has the hot spot at the bottom of the grooves so that localized sensing based on magnetic field enhancement is possible. Moreover, the localized mode is dependent on the tapered angle of the grooves, not the opening ratio. The performance of the dual V-shaped grooves is also discussed. The array of the closely located grooves has nearly identical reflectance spectra but a moderate amount of dip shift exists. As well as obtaining refractive index sensing by this configuration, magnetic field hot spot generation by coherent excitation can be applied to highly localized sensing and enhancing nonlinear processes.

Graphical abstractDisplay Omitted A process for fabricating DLC-based two-dimensional photonic crystals is developed.Plasma chemical vapor deposition was used to deposit a DLC layer.The feasibility of DLC-based photonic crystals is theoretically investigated.A DLC photonic crystal was successfully fabricated using the developed process. In this paper, we discuss the development of a process for fabricating diamond-like carbon (DLC)-based two-dimensional photonic crystals with a wider electronic bandgap and better thermostability than silicon (Si), which is used widely in nanophotonics. In the developed process, the DLC film was deposited on an Si substrate by RF plasma chemical vapor deposition, and the refractive index of the film could be changed from 1.8 to 1.95 by varying the RF power. We also theoretically show that a wide photonic bandgap can be obtained with these DLC-based photonic crystals, even though they have a low refractive index compared to pure diamond. Finally, we develop a process for fabricating DLC-based photonic crystal structures by using electron-beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching techniques.

Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) is in the spotlight as an ingredient of metasurface to achieve active feature. Here, we propose a novel method for active switching of polarization via the metasruface composed of GST nanorods.

Modern imaging and spectroscopy systems require to implement diverse functionalities with thin thickness and wide wavelength ranges. In order to meet this demand, polarization-resolved imaging has been widely investigated with integrated circular polarizers. However, the circular polarizers which operate at the entire visible wavelengths and have a thickness of several tens of nanometers have not been developed yet. Here, a circular polarizer, operating at the entire visible wavelength range, is demonstrated using helically stacked aluminum nano-grating layers. High extinction ratio and broad operation bandwidth are simultaneously achieved by using non-resonant anisotropic characteristics of the nano-grating. It is theoretically verified that the averaged extinction ratio becomes up to 8 over the entire visible wavelength range while having a thickness of 390 nm. Also, the feasibility of the proposed structure and circular polarization selectivity at the visible wavelength range are experimentally verified. It is expected that the proposed structure will lead to extreme miniaturization of a circular polarizer and contribute greatly to the development of mobile/wearable imaging systems such as virtual reality and augmented reality displays. Active switching of near-field directivity, which is an essential functionality for compact integrated photonics and small optoelectronic elements, has been challenging due to small modulation depth and complicated fabrication methods for devices including active optical materials. Here, we theoretically and experimentally realize a nanoscale active directional switching of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) using a phase transition material for the first time. The SPP switching device with noticeable distinction is demonstrated based on the phase transition of vanadium dioxide (VO2) at the telecom wavelength. As the insulator-to-metal phase transition (IMT) of VO2 induces the large change of VO2 permittivity at telecom wavelengths, the plasmonic response of a nanoantenna made of VO2 can be largely tuned by external thermal stimuli. The VO2-insulator-metal (VIM) nanoantenna and its periodic array, the VIM metagrating, are suggested as optical switches. The directional power distinction ratio is designed to change from 8.13:1 to 1:10.56 by the IMT and it is experimentally verified that the ratio changes from 3.725:1 to 1:3.132 as the VIM metagratings are heated up to 90 °C. With an electro-thermally controllable configuration and an optimized resonant design, we expect potential applications of the active switching mechanism for integrable active plasmonic elements and reconfigurable imaging.

National Institute of Animal Science, RDAABSTRACT This study was undertaken to assess dietary CP and ME concentrations for optimum growth performance and carcass characteristics of Korean Native male ducks. In a 3×3 factorial arrangement, 1-d-old Korean Native male ducks were completely randomized design to experimental diets with 3,000, 2,900, and 2,800 kcal of ME/kg of diet; each contained 23, 22, and 21% CP, respectively, from 0 to 3 wk of age. From 4 to 8 wk of age, experimental diets had 3,100, 3,000, and 2,900 kcal of ME/kg of diet, and each contained 19, 18, and 17% CP, respectively. Each dietary treatment was replicated 4 times, and feed and water were provided ad libitum. Body weight, feed intake and uniformity were measured at 3 wk and 8 wk, and carcass characteristics were evaluated at 8 wk. As CP increased from 21 to 23 %, the body weight, BW gain and feed conversion ratios (FCR) linearly improved (P 0.05). Carcass ratios of birds fed 3,000 kcal of ME/kg diets from 3 to 8 wk of age were quadratically increased significantly (P 0.05). Also, breast meat color, pH, cooking loss and shear force were not diffe-rent (P>0.05). Thus, diets with 2,800 kcal of ME/kg and 23% CP or with 2,900 kcal of ME/kg and 17% CP at 0 to 3 wk and 4 to 8 wk, respectively, were used more efficiently. However, diets with 3,000 kcal of ME/kg at 4 to 8 wk in carcass rate was quadratically increased.(Key words : native duck, metabolizable energy, crude protein, performance, carcass traits)

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of various levels of dietary protein on laying performance and egg quality in laying quail. A total of six hundred forty 7-week-old laying type Japanese quail were divided into four groups with eight replicates per group (20 birds per replicate) and fed four diets differing in dietary protein levels (18, 20, 22 and 24%) with isocaloric corn-soybean meal-based diets for 8 weeks. Active metasurfaces, which are tunable and reconfigurable nanophotonic structures with active materials, have been in spotlight as a versatile platform to control the profiles of scattered light. These nanoscale structures show surpassing functionalities compared to the conventional metasurfaces. They also play an important role in a wide range of applications for imaging, sensing, and data storage. Hence, the expansion of functionalities has been highly desired, in order to overcome the limited space constraints and realize the integration of several optical devices on a single compact platform. In this context, an electrically tunable metasurface that enables respective modulation of the phase and amplitude of reflected light, depending on the angle of incidence at the targeted wavelength, is proposed. This resonance-based device with hyperbolic metamaterial substrate excites different kinds of highly confined modes, according to the incident angle. Indium tin oxide is employed to offer electrically tunable optical properties in the near-infrared regime. At the wavelength of 1450 nm, the proposed device modulates the phase of reflected light with ~207 degrees of modulation depth for normal incidence, whereas it shows ~86% of relative reflectance change for oblique incidence of 60 degrees. In principle, the proposed scheme might provide a path to applications for the next-generation ultracompact integrated systems.

In this paper, the broadband transmissive modulation of polarization and amplitude is demonstrated with high efficiency and tunability using multi-layered aluminum metasurfaces. Broadband and nondispersive optical rotation in the optical frequency region is realized by using Fabry-Pérot-like cavity and phase compensation. Simultaneously, the transmission amplitude can be independently controlled by adjusting the twist angle of the anisotropic metasurfaces. The proposed polarization-amplitude modulators are numerically demonstrated to achieve large tunability with an amplitude modulation depth of 0.95 and maximum rotation angle of 180°.

We propose the active metasurface using phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), which has two distinct phases so called amorphous and crystalline phases, for an ultrathin light path switching device. By arranging multiple anisotropic GST nanorods, the gradient metasurface, which has opposite directions of phase gradients at the two distinct phases of GST, is demonstrated theoretically and numerically. As a result, in the case of normal incidence of circularly polarized light at the wavelength of 1650 nm, the cross-polarized light deflects to −55.6° at the amorphous phase and +55.6° at the crystalline phase with the signal-to-noise ratio above 10 dB.
