For overcoming these errors, in this study, nanoparticles expressing CD47 proteins inhibiting the phagocytic attack of immune cells were prepared and then evaluated as an anti-cancer drug delivery vehicle.Methods: The CD47+ cell-derived nanoparticles (CDNs) were prepared from the plasma membranes of human embryonic kidney cells transfected with a plasmid encoding CD47. And the doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into the CDNs, and anti-EGF receptor (EGFR) antibodies were conjugated to the surface of the CDNs to target tumors overexpressing EGFR.Results: The CD47+iCDNs-DOX was successfully synthesized having a stable structure. The CD47+CDNs were taken up less by RAW264.7 macrophages compared to control CDNs. Anti-EGFR CD47+CDNs (iCDNs) selectively recognized EGFR-positive MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro and accumulated more effectively in the target tumor xenografts in mice. Moreover, iCDNs encapsulating doxorubicin (iCDNs-DOX) exhibited the highest suppression of tumor growth in mice, presumably due to the enhanced DOX delivery to tumor tissues, compared to non-targeting CDNs or CD47- iCDNs.Discussion: These results suggest that the clinical application of biocompatible cell membrane-derived nanocarriers could be facilitated by functionalization with macrophage-avoiding CD47 and tumor-targeting antibodies.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: cell-derived nanoparticles, immune surveillance, CD47, doxorubicin, tumor targeting, cancer therapy

Based on the prescription data, the use of statins during follow-up was classified into three risk periods: “statin period” (period with statin cover), “statin withdrawal period” (withdrawal of statin within 30 days), and “no statin period” (no exposure to statin for longer than 30 days). The primary outcome was the composite outcome of myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization, stroke, and all-cause death. We performed multivariate Cox proportional regression analyses which treated the use of statins as a time-dependent variable.Results: During the follow-up period of 3.54 ± 2.91 years (mean ± standard deviation), 1515 (29.0%) patients sustained a primary outcome. Compared with the “no statin period,” the “statin period” was associated with lower risk of the primary outcome (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI, 0.63– 0.81]). While the “statin withdrawal period” posed a significantly increased risk (adjusted HR 1.87, 95% CI [1.52– 2.29]). With respect to the intensity of statins associated with withdrawal, dose-dependent increased risk was observed for withdrawal of low-, moderate-, and high-intensity statins; adjusted HR [95% CI] were 1.45 [0.74– 2.86], 1.86 [1.49– 2.32], and 2.61 [1.41– 4.81], respectively.Conclusion: After PCI, there was an increased cardiovascular risk during the statin withdrawal period, especially with the use of high-intensity statins. To maximize the beneficial effect and to avoid the withdrawal effect of statins, high-risk patients need to adhere to taking statins without discontinuation.Keywords: statin, percutaneous coronary intervention, statin withdrawal, adherence

Purpose: In this study, four different types of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody-conjugated immunonanoparticles were prepared and tested for cancer cell-targeted therapeutic siRNA delivery. Materials and methods: The prepared nanoparticles encapsulating siRNAs were characterized by gel retardation and particle analysis using a Zetasizer. In vitro transfection and reduction of target genes, vimentin and JAK3, were determined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. In vivo tumor targeting and antitumoral efficacies of the nanoparticles were evaluated in mice carrying tumors. Results: Among these immunonanoparticles, anti-EGFR immunolipoplexes and immunoviroplexes exhibited remarkable cell binding and siRNA delivery to EGFR-expressing tumor cells compared to immunoliposomes and immunovirosomes. Especially, the anti-EGFR immunoviroplexes exhibited the most efficient siRNA transfection to target tumor cells. Therefore, antitumoral vimentin and Janus kinase-3 siRNAs were loaded in the anti-EGFR immunolipoplexes and immunoviroplexes, which were tested in mice carrying SK-OV-3 tumor xenografts. In fact, the therapeutic siRNAs were efficiently delivered to the tumor tissues by both delivery vehicles, resulting in significant inhibition of tumor growth. Moreover, administration of doxorubicin in combination with anti-EGFR immunoviroplexes resulted in remarkable and synergistic tumor growth inhibition. Conclusion: This study provides experimental proof that cancer cell-targeted immunoviroplexes are an efficient siRNA delivery system for cancer therapy. Moreover, this study also suggests that a combination of conventional chemotherapy and tumor-directed anticancer siRNA therapy would be a better modality for cancer treatment. Abstract Spatiotemporal control of full freedoms of polarized light emission is crucial in multiplexed optical computing, encryption and communication. Although recent advancements have been made in active emission or passive conversion of polarized light through solution-processed nanomaterials or metasurfaces, these design paths usually encounter limitations, such as small polarization degrees, low light utilization efficiency, limited polarization states, and lack of spatiotemporal control. Here, we addressed these challenges by integrating the spatiotemporal modulation of the LED device, the precise control and efficient polarization emission through nanomaterial assembly, and the programmable patterning/positioning using 3D printing. We achieved an extremely high degree of polarization for both linearly and circularly polarized emission from ultrathin inorganic nanowires and quantum nanorods thanks to the shear-force-induced alignment effect during the protruding of printing filaments. Real-time polarization modulation covering the entire Poincaré sphere can be conveniently obtained through the programming of the on-off state of each LED pixel. Further, the output polarization states can be encoded by an ordered chiral plasmonic film. Our device provides an excellent platform for multiplexing spatiotemporal polarization information, enabling visible light communication with an exceptionally elevated level of physical layer security and multifunctional encrypted displays that can encode both 2D and 3D information.

Introduction Muscle strength is known to play an important role in the health of older adults. The health burden of cigarette smoking among older adults remains significant. We investigated the association between smoking cessation and dynapenia among older lifetime smokers in Korea. Methods This study is a secondary dataset analysis of cross-sectional data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016– 2019. Introduction: Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. Intraoperative and postoperative complications of cataract surgery include posterior capsule rupture, retinal detachment, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, cystoid macular edema, endophthalmitis, and intraocular lens dislocation. As corneal perforation is rarely related to cataract surgery, we report a case of intraoperative iatrogenic corneal puncture that led to a full-thickness laceration that was managed without severe complications. Case Presentation: An 81-year-old woman underwent immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery. Cataract grading of both eyes was nuclear color grade II and cortical cataract grade III, according to the lens opacity classification system III. While performing cataract surgery on her right eye, a corneal puncture with a keratome incidentally occurred just before making the main temporal incision, resulting in a 3-mm full-thickness laceration at the peripheral cornea. One-bite of 10-0 nylon suture was placed, and the remaining procedure was performed through a superior main incision. Three-bites of 10-0 nylon suture were placed at the laceration site at the end of the procedure. The uncorrected visual acuity was 20/40 in both eyes the following day. Corneal astigmatism increased in the right eye, and the refractive error was more myopic than targeted. No leakage was observed. Conclusion: Slight corneal contact with a keratome can lead to full-thickness laceration when the anterior chamber is filled with an ophthalmic viscosurgical device during cataract surgery. Caution should be exercised while manipulating sharp surgical instruments to avoid such complications.

Abstract Background Altered thyroid hormone levels have been associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and related cognitive decline. However, the neuropathological substrates underlying the link between thyroid hormones and AD dementia are not yet fully understood. We first investigated the association between serum thyroid hormone levels and in vivo AD pathologies including both beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau deposition measured by positron emission tomography (PET). Given the well-known relationship between Aβ and tau pathology in AD, we additionally examined the moderating effects of thyroid hormone levels on the association between Aβ and tau deposition. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted as part of the Korean Brain Aging Study for Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Alzheimer's Disease (KBASE) cohort. This study included a total of 291 cognitively normal adults aged 55 to 90. All participants received comprehensive clinical assessments, measurements for serum total triiodothyronine (T3), free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and brain imaging evaluations including [11C]-Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)- PET and [18F] AV-1451 PET. Results No associations were found between either thyroid hormones or TSH and Aβ and tau deposition on PET. However, fT4 (p = 0.002) and fT3 (p = 0.001) exhibited significant interactions with Aβ on tau deposition: The sensitivity analyses conducted after the removal of an outlier showed that the interaction effect between fT4 and Aβ deposition was not significant, whereas the interaction between fT3 and Aβ deposition remained significant. However, further subgroup analyses demonstrated a more pronounced positive relationship between Aβ and tau in both the higher fT4 and fT3 groups compared to the lower group, irrespective of outlier removal. Meanwhile, neither T3 nor TSH had any interaction with Aβ on tau deposition. Conclusion Our findings suggest that serum thyroid hormones may moderate the relationship between cerebral Aβ and tau pathology. Higher levels of serum thyroid hormones could potentially accelerate the Aβ-dependent tau deposition in the brain. Further replication studies in independent samples are needed to verify the current results.

Abstract Ensuring stable integration of diverse soft electronic components for reliable operation under dynamic conditions is crucial. However, integrating soft electronics, comprising various materials like polymers, metals, and hydrogels, poses challenges due to their different mechanical and chemical properties. This study introduces a dried-hydrogel adhesive made of poly(vinyl alcohol) and tannic acid multilayers (d-HAPT), which integrates soft electronic materials through moisture-derived chain entanglement. d-HAPT is a thin (~1 µm) and highly transparent (over 85% transmittance in the visible light region) adhesive, showing robust bonding (up to 3.6 MPa) within a short time (

Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR), caused by Phytophthora sojae, can occur at any growth stage under poorly drained and humid conditions. The expansion of soybean cultivation in South Korean paddy fields has increased the frequency of PRR outbreaks. This study aimed to identify four P. sojae isolates newly collected from domestic fields and evaluate race-specific resistance using the hypocotyl inoculation technique. The four isolates exhibited various pathotypes, with GJ3053 exhibiting the highest virulence complexity. Two isolates, GJ3053 and AD3617, were screened from 205 soybeans, and 182 and 190 genotypes (88.8 and 92.7%, respectively) were susceptible to each isolate. Among these accessions, five genotypes resistant to both isolates were selected. These promising genotypes are candidates for the development of resistant soybean cultivars that can effectively control PRR through gene stacking.

Abstract BackgroundProfessionals with expertise in health informatics play a crucial role in the digital health sector. Despite efforts to train experts in this field, the specific impact of such training, especially for individuals from diverse academic backgrounds, remains undetermined. ObjectiveThis study therefore aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive health informatics training program on graduates with respect to their job roles, transitions, and competencies and to provide insights for curriculum design and future research. MethodsA survey was conducted among 206 students who completed the Advanced Health Informatics Analyst program between 2018 and 2022. The questionnaire comprised four categories: (1) general information about the respondent, (2) changes before and after program completion, (3) the impact of the program on professional practice, and (4) continuing education requirements. ResultsThe study received 161 (78.2%) responses from the 206 students. Graduates of the program had diverse academic backgrounds and consequently undertook various informatics tasks after their training. Most graduates (117/161, 72.7%) are now involved in tasks such as data preprocessing, visualizing results for better understanding, and report writing for data processing and analysis. Program participation significantly improved job performance (P ConclusionsThe integrated practical education program was effective in addressing the diverse needs of trainees from various fields, enhancing their capabilities, and preparing them for the evolving industry demands. This study emphasizes the value of providing specialized training in health informatics for graduates regardless of their discipline.

Abstract Chirality‐induced spin selectivity observed in chiral 2D organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite holds promise to achieve spin‐dependent electrochemistry. However, conventional chiral 2D perovskites suffer from low conductivity and hygroscopicity, limiting electrochemical performance and operational stability. Here, a cutting‐edge material design is introduced to develop a stable and efficient chiral perovskite‐based spin polarizer by employing fluorinated chiral cation. The fluorination approach effectively promotes the charge carrier transport along the out‐of‐plane direction by mitigating the dielectric confinement effect within the multi‐quantum well‐structured 2D perovskite. Integrating the fluorinated cation incorporated spin polarizer with BiVO4 photoanode considerably boosts the photocurrent density while reducing overpotential through a spin‐dependent oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, the hydrophobic nature of fluorine in spin polarizer endows operational stability to the photoanode, extending the durability by 280% as compared to the device with non‐fluorinated spin polarizer.

In this study, we fabricated vertical Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) based on wide bandgap semiconductor beta-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) and silicon carbide (SiC), respectively, and conducted proton irradiation experiments to analyze the radiation hardness of the SBDs comparatively. The effects of proton radiation on the performance of SBDs were assessed through measurements of forward current, capacitance, and breakdown characteristics. Both devices exhibited degradation in current and capacitance characteristics following proton irradiation, attributed to displacement damage (DD). Notably, the β-Ga2O3-based SBD demonstrated more pronounced deterioration compared to the SiC-based device despite similar vacancy distributions as confirmed by SRIM simulation. Moreover, a decrease in contact radius correlated with exacerbated degradation in the current characteristics of the β-Ga2O3-based SBD. Following proton irradiation, breakdown voltages of both devices increased due to elevated resistance induced by displacement damage. While both β-Ga2O3 and SiC-based SBDs experienced displacement damage under high fluence proton irradiation, the extent of performance degradation varied depending on the dimensions and quality of epitaxial and substrate layers.

Background We aimed to evaluate the utility of repeat biopsy of thyroid nodules classified as atypia of undetermined significance with architectural atypia (IIIB) on core-needle biopsy (CNB). Methods This retrospective study evaluated patients with thyroid nodules categorized as IIIB on CNB between 2013 and 2015. Demographic characteristics, subsequent biopsy results, and ultrasound (US) images were evaluated. The malignancy rates of nodules according to number of CNBs and the number of IIIB diagnoses was compared. Demographic and US features were evaluated to determine factors predictive of malignancy. Results Of 1,003 IIIB nodules on CNB, the final diagnosis was determined for 328 (32.7%) nodules, with 121 of them confirmed as malignant, resulting in a malignancy rate of 36.9% (95% confidence interval, 31.7% to 42.1%). Repeat CNB was performed in 248 nodules (24.7%), with 75 (30.2%), 131 (52.8%), 13 (5.2%), 26 (10.5%), one (0.4%), and two (0.8%) reclassified into categories II, IIIB, IIIA, IV, V, and VI, respectively. Malignancy rates were not significantly affected by the number of CNBs (P=0.291) or the number of IIIB diagnoses (P=0.473). None of the nodules confirmed as category II on repeat CNB was malignant. Abstract Stretchable displays attract significant attention because of their potential applications in wearable electronics, smart textiles, and human-conformable devices. This paper introduces an electrically stable, mechanically ultra-robust, and water-resistant stretchable OLED display (SOLED) mounted on a stress-relief pillar platform. The SOLED is fabricated on a thin, transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using conventional vacuum evaporation, organic-inorganic hybrid thin film encapsulation (TFE), and a nonselective laser patterning process. This simple and efficient process yields an OLED display with exceptional stretchability, reaching up to 95% strain and outstanding durability, enduring 100,000 stretch-release cycles at 50% strain. Operational lifetime and water-resistant storage lifetime measurements confirm that the TFE provides effective protection even after the nonselective laser patterning process. A 3 × 3 array SOLED display module mounted on a stress-relief pillar platform is successfully implemented, marking the first case of water-resistant display array operation in the field of SOLEDs. This work aims to develop practical stretchable displays by offering a reliable fabrication method and device design for creating mechanically robust and adaptable displays, potentially paving the way for future advances in human-conformable electronics and other innovative applications.

Purpose This study investigated the clinical and ultrasonographic (US) findings of suture granulomas and recurrent tumors, and aimed to identify specific characteristics of suture granulomas through an experimental study. Methods This retrospective study included 20 pathologically confirmed suture granulomas and 40 recurrent tumors between January 2010 and December 2020. The clinical findings included suture material, surgery, and initial TNM stage. The US findings included shape, size, margin, echogenicity, heterogeneity, vascularity, and internal echogenic foci. The distribution, paired appearance, and "knot-and-ear" appearance of internal echogenic foci were assessed. An experiment using pork meat investigated the US configuration of suture knots. Results Eighteen patients with 20 suture granulomas (15 women; mean age, 52±13 years) and 37 patients with 40 recurrent tumors (24 women; 54±18 years) were included. Patients with suture granulomas exhibited earlier initial T and N stages than those with recurrent tumors. The knot-and-ear appearance, defined as an echogenic dot accompanied by two adjacent echogenic dots or lines based on experimental findings, was observed in 50% of suture granulomas, but not in recurrent tumors (P

Advances in nanophotonics have created numerous pathways for light–matter interactions in nanometer scale, enriched by physical and chemical mechanisms. Over the avenue, electrically tunable photonic response is highly desired for optical encryption, optical switch, and structural color display. However, the perceived obstacle, which lies in the energy-efficient tuning mechanism and/or its weak light–matter interaction, is treated as a barrier. Here, we introduce electrochromic nanopixels made of hybrid nanowires integrated with polyaniline (PANI). The device shows optical duality between two resonators: (i) surface plasmon polariton (SPP)-induced waveguide (wavelength-selective absorber) and (ii) ultrathin resonator (broadband absorber). With switching effect of between resonant modes, we achieve enhanced chromatic variation spanning from red to green and blue while operating at a sub-1-volt level, ensuring compatibility with the CMOS voltage range. This modulation is achieved by improving the light–matter interaction, effectively harnessing the intrinsic optical property transition of PANI from lossy to dielectric in response to the redox states. In our experimental approach, we successfully scaled up device fabrication to an 8-inch wafer, tailoring the nanowire array to different dimensions for optical information encryption. Demonstrating distinct chromaticity modulation, we achieve optical encryption of multiple data bits, up to 8 bits per unit cell. By capitalizing on the remarkable sensitivity to the angular dependence of the waveguiding mode, we further enhance the information capacity to an impressive 10 bits per unit cell.

Abstract Although various comorbidities have been noted to be associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis, few studies have compared comorbidities between the two diseases, and little is known about whether these comorbidities vary by the subtypes of psoriasis. In this study of 1:1 age- and sex-matched pair analysis between patients diagnosed with either psoriasis or AD at Asan Medical Center between 1991 and 2020, comorbidities, as determined by the International Classification of Diseases-10 codes, and likelihood ratios of metabolic and neurologic comorbidities in psoriasis compared with AD were studied using a logistic regression model. Among a total of 14,128 patients, the psoriasis group had higher odds of obesity (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.49 [1.34–1.66]), hypertension (1.14 [1.03–1.26]), diabetes mellitus (1.46 [1.29–1.66]), chronic kidney disease (1.59 [1.22–2.08]), and Parkinson's disease (2.1 [1.15–3.83]) than the AD group. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with plaque psoriasis had higher odds of obesity (1.18 [1.05–1.33]), hypertension (1.18 [1.06–1.32]), diabetes mellitus (1.53 [1.34–1.75]), chronic kidney disease (1.66 [1.26–2.17]), and Parkinson’s disease (2.12 [1.16–3.88]) compared with AD. Meanwhile, guttate psoriasis was associated with higher odds of dementia (3.63 [1.06–12.40]) and patients with generalized pustular psoriasis showed higher odds of diabetes mellitus (5.42 [1.56–18.83]) compared with AD. In conclusion, Asian patients with all types of psoriasis should be closely monitored for the development of metabolic and neurologic diseases, especially men and those aged ≥ 40 years.

Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. In our previous studies, we showed that wheat bran extract (WBE) reduced white matter damage in a rat VaD model and improved memory in a human clinical trial. However, starch gelatinization made the large-scale preparation of WBE difficult. To simplify the manufacturing process and increase efficacy, we attempted to find a decoction containing an optimum ratio of wheat bran, sliced citrus peel, and sliced jujube (WCJ). To find an optimal ratio, the cell survival of C6 (rat glioma) cultured under hypoxic conditions (1% O2) was measured, and apoptosis was assessed. To confirm the efficacies of the optimized WCJ for VaD, pupillary light reflex, white matter damage, and the activation of astrocytes and microglia were assessed in a rat model of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) causing chronic hypoperfusion. Using a combination of both searching the literature and cell survival experiments, we chose 6:2:1 as the optimal ratio of wheat bran to sliced citrus peel to sliced jujube to prepare WCJ. We showed that phytic acid contained only in wheat bran can be used as an indicator component for the quality control of WCJ. We observed in vitro that the WCJ treatment improved cell survival by reducing apoptosis through an increase in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio. In the BCCAO experiments, the WCJ-supplemented diet prevented astrocytic and microglial activation, mitigated myelin damage in the corpus callosum and optic tract, and, consequently, improved pupillary light reflex at dosages over 100 mg/kg/day. The results suggest that the consumption of WCJ can prevent VaD by reducing white matter damage, and WCJ can be developed as a safe, herbal medicine to prevent VaD.

Abstract Objectives To use clinical, radiographic, and CT radiomics features to develop and validate a preoperative prediction model for the early recurrence of pancreatic cancer. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 190 patients (150 and 40 in the development and test cohort from different centers) with pancreatic cancer who underwent pancreatectomy between January 2018 and June 2021. Radiomics, clinical-radiologic (CR), and clinical-radiologic-radiomics (CRR) models were developed for the prediction of recurrence within 12 months after surgery. Performance was evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC), Brier score, sensitivity, and specificity. Results Early recurrence occurred in 36.7% and 42.5% of the development and test cohorts, respectively (P = 0.62). The features for the CR model included carbohydrate antigen 19-9 > 500 U/mL (odds ratio [OR], 3.60; P = 0.01), abutment to the portal and/or superior mesenteric vein (OR, 2.54; P = 0.054), and adjacent organ invasion (OR, 2.91; P = 0.03). The CRR model demonstrated significantly higher AUCs than the radiomics model in the internal (0.77 vs. 0.73; P = 0.048) and external (0.83 vs. 0.69; P = 0.038) validations. Although we found no significant difference between AUCs of the CR and CRR models (0.83 vs. 0.76; P = 0.17), CRR models showed more balanced sensitivity and specificity (0.65 and 0.87) than CR model (0.41 and 0.91) in the test cohort. Conclusions The CRR model outperformed the radiomics and CR models in predicting the early recurrence of pancreatic cancer, providing valuable information for risk stratification and treatment guidance.

Herein, we investigate the effects of temperature and thiourea addition rate on the synthesis of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) via a chemical co-precipitation method, exploring their impact on the size and morphology of CuS NPs. Our systematic approach resulted in the successful synthesis of CuS NPs with significantly smaller nanoflower sizes than previously reported in the literature, providing insights into the nucleation and growth mechanisms under various synthesis conditions. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized CuS NPs with three types of distinctive morphologies, namely, nanoflowers with 50 nm diameter (F-50), nanoflowers with 200 nm diameter, and nanogravels with 50 nm diameter, is comparatively analyzed. Notably, the F-50 exhibits a superior photocatalytic performance compared to the other samples, demonstrating the considerable influence of the NP size and morphology on their functional properties. Furthermore, the antibacterial property of the small CuS nanoflowers is examined using an antibacterial film fabricated by coating the NPs on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate, which is widely used as a protective or packaging film in various industries because of its transparency and flexibility. The antibacterial film can be used to kill both gram-positive and -negative bacteria effectively. This research contributes significantly to the understanding and optimization of CuS NP synthesis and application, emphasizing the potential of small-sized nanoflower CuS NPs in photocatalysis and antibacterial applications.

Purpose: To create a nomogram that can predict the probability of prostate cancer using prostate health index (PHI) and clinical parameters of patients. And the optimal cut-off value of PHI for prostate cancer was also assessed. Materials and Methods: A prospective, multi-center study was conducted. PHI was evaluated prior to biopsy in patients requiring prostate biopsy due to high prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Among screened 1,010 patients, 626 patients with clinically suspected prostate cancer with aged 40 to 85 years, and with PSA levels ranging from 2.5 to 10 ng/mL were analyzed. Results: Among 626 patients, 38.82% (243/626) and 22.52% (141/626) were diagnosed with prostate cancer and clinically significant prostate cancer, respectively. This study investigates the effects of sway and roll excitations on sloshing liquid loads in a tank, using Ansys Fluent software. The model considered in the study is a 1:50 scaled membrane-type tank, based on a KC-1 membrane LNG tank designed by Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS). The volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to track the free surface inside the tank, and the standard k-ε model is applied to express the turbulent flow of the liquid. To explore the motion of the tank under excitation, a user-defined function (UDF) and a dynamic mesh technique are employed to control the external forces exerted on the tank through its motion. The results, in the form of time series data on the sloshing pressures in the tank under pure sway, roll, and coupled sway-roll, are analysed, with specific ranges for the excitation amplitudes and frequencies. We show that variations in excitation frequency and amplitude significantly influence the sloshing loads. Sloshing loads are found to intensify when the excitation frequency matches the tank’s primary natural frequency, 1.0 ω1′. Furthermore, with coupled sway-roll excitations, the sloshing loads are weakened when the sway and roll are in-phase and are intensified when these are out-of-phase. Fast Fourier transform analysis provides insights into the frequency domain, showing that the dominant frequency is 0.88 Hz and it is approximately equal to the tank’s primary natural frequency, 1.0 ω1′.

Cyclodextrin (CD) derivatives have gained significant attention in biomedical applications due to their remarkable biocompatibility, unique inclusion capabilities, and potential for functionalization. This review focuses on recent advancements in CD-based assemblies, specifically their role in improving drug delivery, emphasizing remdesivir (RMD). The review introduces CD materials and their versatile applications in self-assembly and supramolecular assembly. CD materials offer immense potential for designing drug delivery systems with enhanced activity. Their inherent inclusion capabilities enable the encapsulation of diverse therapeutic agents, including RMD, resulting in improved solubility, stability, and bioavailability. The recent advances in CD-based assemblies, focusing on their integration with RMD have been concentrated here. Various strategies for constructing these assemblies are discussed, including physical encapsulation, covalent conjugation, and surface functionalization techniques. Furthermore, exploring future directions in these fields has also been provided. Ongoing research efforts are directed toward developing novel CD derivatives with enhanced properties, such as increased encapsulation efficiency and improved release kinetics. Moreover, the integration of CD-based assemblies with advanced technologies such as nanomedicine and gene therapy holds tremendous promise for personalized medicine and precision therapeutics

Presbycusis, also referred to as age-related hearing loss (ARHL), is a multifaceted condition caused by the natural aging process affecting the auditory system. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in human populations can identify potential genes linked to ARHL. Despite this, our knowledge of the biochemical and molecular mechanisms behind the condition remains incomplete. This study aims to evaluate a potential protective tool for ARHL treatment by comparing human blood-based target gene-miRNA associations regulated in ARHL. To identify promising target genes for ARHL, we utilized an mRNA assay. To determine the role of miRNA in ARHL, we investigated the expression profile of miRNA in whole blood in ARHL patients with real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). A reporter gene assay was performed to confirm the regulation of candidate genes by microRNA. Through RT-qPCR validation analysis, we finally confirmed the relationship between ARHL and the role of the interferon-gamma (IFNG) gene. This gene can be regarded as an age-related gene. Through gene ontology (GO) analysis, it has been found that these genes are enriched in pathways related to apoptosis. Among them, IFNG induces an inflammatory response, apoptotic cell death, and cellular senescence. We found that miR-409-3p downregulates the expression of the IFNG in vitro. In addition, the downregulation of the IFNG by miRNA 409-3p promoted cell apoptosis and suppressed proliferation. In conclusion, our study produced gene signatures and associated microRNA regulation that could be a protective key for ARHL patients. IFNG genes and miR-409-3p should be investigated for their usefulness as a new biomarker for treatment modality.

Why are there so few working-class women in politics? While white-collar representatives dominate legislatures in general, the deficit of working-class members is particularly pronounced among female politicians. To answer this question, this study examines the influence of class and gender in voter evaluation. Through the cross-country comparison of conjoint experiments in the U.S. and the U.K., we find that working-class backgrounds disadvantage women candidates in a way that they do not disadvantage their male counterparts. Voters tend to prefer white-collar candidates to working-class politicians. Such a negative effect of working-class backgrounds is particularly evident for female candidates because the negative traits associated with the lower economic class, such as incompetence and lack of ambition, exacerbate voters' questions about female candidates’ qualifications for political leadership. By contrast, for male candidates, whose qualifications are rarely questioned based on their gender, candidates’ working-class background has a less negative impact.

Abstract Despite the aid of tissue expansion, the ideal design of random pattern flap is not always available in patients with extensive skin lesions. We investigated the effectiveness of surgical delay on expanded flaps in pediatric patients. Retrospective cohort study was performed on patients who underwent tissue expansion surgery for extensive skin lesions at Seoul National University Children’s Hospital. The surgical delay technique was employed for patients with unfavorable flap conditions related to location or transposition angles. The dimensions of skin lesions and flaps were measured based on medical photographs. In May 2023, the Committee of Clinical Practice Guidelines of the Korean Diabetes Association published the revised clinical practice guidelines for Korean adults with diabetes and prediabetes. We incorporated the latest clinical research findings through a comprehensive systematic literature review and applied them in a manner suitable for the Korean population. These guidelines are designed for all healthcare providers nationwide, including physicians, diabetes experts, and certified diabetes educators who manage patients with diabetes or individuals at risk of developing diabetes. Based on recent changes in international guidelines and the results of a Korean epidemiological study, the recommended age for diabetes screening has been lowered. In collaboration with the relevant Korean medical societies, recently revised guidelines for managing hypertension and dyslipidemia in patients with diabetes have been incorporated into this guideline. An abridgment containing practical information on patient education and systematic management in the clinic was published separately.

Abstract Human-machine interface has been considered as a prominent technology for numerous smart applications due to their direct communication between humans and machines. In particular, wearable electronic skins with a free form factor have received a lot of attention due to their excellent adherence to rough and wrinkled surfaces such as human skin and internal organs. However, most of the e-skins reported to date have some disadvantages in terms of mechanical instability and accumulation of by-products at the interface between the human skin and the device. Here, we report a mechanically stable e-skin via a newly designed pattern named the “eyes.” The ingeniously designed pattern of the eyes allowed mechanical stress and strain to be dissipated more effectively than other previously reported patterns. E-skin permeability of by-product was experimentally confirmed through sweat removal tests, showing superior sweat permeability compared to conventional e-skins. Finally, the real-time monitoring of the body temperature was carried out using our resistive-type thermometer in the e-skin.

Abstract Background Bioplastics are attracting considerable attention, owing to the increase in non-degradable waste. Using microorganisms to degrade bioplastics is a promising strategy for reducing non-degradable plastic waste. However, maintaining bacterial viability and activity during culture and storage remains challenging. With the use of conventional methods, cell viability and activity was lost; therefore, these conditions need to be optimized for the practical application of microorganisms in bioplastic degradation. Therefore, we aimed to optimize the feasibility of the lyophilization method for convenient storage and direct use. In addition, we incoporated protective reagents to increase the viability and activity of lyophilized microorganisms. By selecting and applying the best protective reagents for the lyophilization process and the effects of additives on the growth and PHB-degrading activity of strains were analyzed after lyophilization. For developing the lyophilization method for protecting degradation activity, it may promote practical applications of bioplastic-degrading bacteria. Results In this study, the polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB)-degrading strain, Bacillus sp. JY14 was lyophilized with the use of various sugars as protective reagents. Among the carbon sources tested, raffinose was associated with the highest cell survival rate (12.1%). Moreover, 7% of raffionose showed the highest PHB degradation yield (92.1%). Therefore, raffinose was selected as the most effective protective reagent. Also, bacterial activity was successfully maintained, with raffinose, under different storage temperatures and period. Conclusions This study highlights lyophilization as an efficient microorganism storage method to enhance the applicability of bioplastic-degrading bacterial strains. The approach developed herein can be further studied and used to promote the application of microorganisms in bioplastic degradation.

In Korea, greenhouses are traditionally used for crop cultivation in the winter. However, due to diverse consumer demands, climate change, and advancements in agricultural technology, more farms are aiming for year-round production. Nonetheless, summer cropping poses challenges such as high temperatures, humidity from the monsoon season, and low light conditions, which make it difficult to grow crops. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the best planting time for summer tomato cultivation in a Korean semi-closed greenhouse that can be both air-conditioned and heated. The experiment was conducted in the Advanced Digital Greenhouse, built by the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. The tomato seedlings were planted in April, May, and June 2022. Growth parameters such as stem diameter, flowering position, stem growth rate, and leaf shape index were measured, and harvesting was carried out once or twice weekly per treatment from 65 days to 265 days after planting. The light use efficiency and yield per unit area at each planting time was measured. Tomatoes planted in April showed a maximum of 42.9% higher light use efficiency for fruit production and a maximum of 33.3% higher yield. Furthermore, the growth form of the crops was closest to the reproductive growth type. Therefore, among April, May, and June, April is considered the most suitable planting time for summer cultivation, which is expected to contribute to reducing labor costs due to decreased workload and increasing farm income through increased yields. Future research should explore optimizing greenhouse microclimates and developing crop varieties tailored for summer cultivation to further enhance productivity and sustainability in year-round agricultural practices.

In day-to-day living, individuals are exposed to various environmentally hazardous substances that have been associated with diverse diseases. Exposure to air pollutants can occur during breathing, posing a considerable risk to those with environmental health vulnerabilities. Among vulnerable individuals, maternal exposure can negatively impact the mother and child in utero. The developing fetus is particularly vulnerable to environmentally hazardous substances, with potentially greater implications. Among air pollutants, toluene is neurotoxic, and its effects have been widely explored. However, the impact of low-level toluene exposure in daily life remains unclear. Herein, we evaluated 194 mothers and infants from the Growing children’s health and Evaluation of Environment (GREEN) cohort to determine the possible effects of early-life toluene exposure on the nervous system. Using Omics experiments, the effects of toluene were confirmed based on epigenetic changes and altered mRNA expression. Various epigenetic changes were identified, with upregulated expression potentially contributing to diseases such as glioblastoma and Alzheimer’s, and downregulated expression being associated with structural neuronal abnormalities. These findings were detected in both maternal and infant groups, suggesting that maternal exposure to environmental hazardous substances can negatively impact the fetus. Our findings will facilitate the establishment of environmental health policies, including the management of environmentally hazardous substances for vulnerable groups.

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the technical feasibility, efficacy, and safety of anterolateral hydrodissection (ALHD) in radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign thyroid nodules. Methods Between November 2019 and April 2020, 39 patients underwent 41 sessions of RFA with the ALHD technique to treat benign thyroid nodules. ALHD was performed with cold (0°C-4°C) 5% dextrose solution during RFA to minimize pain and secure sufficient safety margins from critical neck structures. The initial ablation ratio (IAR) was measured to assess the technique’s efficiency. Ultrasound examinations, symptoms, and cosmetic scores were evaluated pre-procedure and at 6 and 12 months post-procedure. Procedure-related pain during RFA and complications were recorded. Results The mean index nodule volume was 20.5±21.6 mL. ALHD was technically feasible in all patients. Abstract Background Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is relatively safe and effective in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). However, although rare, complications can occur after SLT. This report describes a patient with choroidal detachment due to hypotony following SLT without anterior chamber (AC) inflammation. Case presentation A 67-year-old man was referred for elevated IOP in his left eye with advanced glaucomatous visual field loss. He had previously been diagnosed with idiopathic uveitic glaucoma in the left eye, for which he underwent laser iridotomy, trabeculectomy, and cataract surgery. At the first visit, the IOP of his left eye measured by Goldmann tonometry was 28 mmHg despite maximally tolerated medical treatment. SLT was performed in his left eye, resulting in an IOP of 7 mmHg 7 days later. At 3 weeks post-procedure, the patient experienced ocular pain and decreased visual acuity in his left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed deep anterior chamber depth and no inflammation reaction, but the IOP in his left eye was 4 mmHg, and both fundus and B-scan ultrasonography showed serous choroidal detachment. All anti-glaucoma agents were stopped, and the patient was started on treatment with oral prednisolone and cyclopentolate eye drops. Three weeks later, choroidal detachment had resolved and the IOP in his left eye had stabilized at 8 mmHg. Follow-up 3 months later showed that the IOP in his left eye remained stable. Conclusions Choroidal detachment-related hypotony is a rare complication of SLT. This possible complication following SLT should be informed to the patients and considered when performing the procedure.

Abstract Identifying the three-dimensional (3D) crystal plane and strain-field distributions of nanocrystals is essential for optical, catalytic, and electronic applications. However, it remains a challenge to image concave surfaces of nanoparticles. Here, we develop a methodology for visualizing the 3D information of chiral gold nanoparticles ≈ 200 nm in size with concave gap structures by Bragg coherent X-ray diffraction imaging. The distribution of the high-Miller-index planes constituting the concave chiral gap is precisely determined. The highly strained region adjacent to the chiral gaps is resolved, which was correlated to the 432-symmetric morphology of the nanoparticles and its corresponding plasmonic properties are numerically predicted from the atomically defined structures. This approach can serve as a comprehensive characterization platform for visualizing the 3D crystallographic and strain distributions of nanoparticles with a few hundred nanometers, especially for applications where structural complexity and local heterogeneity are major determinants, as exemplified in plasmonics.

Abstract Microbiota in the mosquito plays an important role in their behavior and vector competence. The composition of their microbiome is strongly influenced by the environment, especially their habitat. The microbiome profiles of adult female Anopheles sinensis mosquitoes from malaria hyperendemic and hypoendemic areas in Republic of Korea were compared using 16S rRNA Illumina sequencing. In different epidemiology groups, the alpha and beta diversity analyses were significant. The major bacterial phylum was Proteobacteria. The most abundant species in the microbiome of hyperendemic mosquitoes were the genera Staphylococcus, Erwinia, Serratia, and Pantoea. Notably, a distinct microbiome profile characterized by the dominance of Pseudomonas synxantha was identified in the hypoendemic area, suggesting a potential correlation between the microbiome profiles and the incidence of malaria cases.

Recent therapeutic strategies for hemophilia include long-term therapeutic gene expression using adeno-associated virus (AAV) and rebalancing therapy via the downregulation of anticoagulant pathways. However, these approaches have limitations in immune responses or insufficiency to control acute bleeding. Thus, we developed a therapeutic strategy for hemophilia B by a combined rebalancing and human factor 9 (hF9) gene knockin (KI) using a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) and AAV. Antithrombin (AT; Serpin Family C Member 1 [Serpinc1]) was selected as the target anticoagulation pathway for the gene KI. First, the combined use of LNP-clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and AAV donor resulted in 20% insertions or deletions (indels) in Serpinc1 and 67% reduction of blood mouse AT concentration. Second, hF9 coding sequences were integrated into approximately 3% of the target locus. hF9 KI yielded approximately 1,000 ng/mL human factor IX (hFIX) and restored coagulation activity to a normal level. LNP-CRISPR injection caused sustained AT downregulation and hFIX production up to 63 weeks. AT inhibition and hFIX protein-production ability could be maintained by the proliferation of genetically edited hepatocytes in the case of partial hepatectomy. The co-administration of AAV and LNP showed no severe side effects except random integrations. Our results demonstrate hemophilia B therapy by a combination of rebalancing and hF9 KI using LNP and AAV.

Gene therapy and rebalancing therapy have emerged as promising approaches for treating hemophilia A, but there are limitations, such as temporary efficacy due to individual differences. Genome editing for hemophilia has shown long-term therapeutic potential in preclinical trials. However, a cautious approach is necessary because genome editing is irreversible. Therefore, we attempted to induce low-level human factor 8 (hF8) gene knockin (KI) using 244-cis lipid nanoparticles and low-dose adeno-associated virus to minimize side effects and achieve a therapeutic threshold in hemophilia A mice. We selected the serpin family C member 1, SerpinC1, locus as a target to enable a combined rebalancing strategy with hF8 KI to augment efficacy. This strategy improved blood coagulation activity and reduced hemophilic complications without adverse effects. Furthermore, hemophilic mice with genome editing exhibit enhanced survival for 40 weeks. Here, we demonstrate an effective, safe, and sustainable treatment for hemophilia A. This study provides valuable information to establish safe and long-term genome-editing-mediated treatment strategies for treating hemophilia and other protein-deficient genetic diseases.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) can convert active oxygen to oxygen or hydrogen peroxide, and recent research has suggested that it can protect against lung damage and fibrosis. Clinical applications based on SOD remain limited however due to costs and low stability. We here investigated a potential new therapeutic delivery system for this enzyme in the form of SOD-overexpressing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens spores which we introduced into a bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis mouse model. This treatment significantly alleviated the disease, as quantified using a hydroxyproline assay, at 107 colony forming unit (CFU) of Bacillus spores per day. Exposure of the mice to the spores was further found to decrease the lung mRNA levels of CTGF, Col1a1, α-SMA, TGF-β, TNF-α, and IL-6, and the protein levels of TGF-β, Smad2/3, αSMA and Col1a1, all major indicators of pulmonary fibrosis. Survival benefits, and reduced byproducts of lipid peroxidase such as malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynen, were also noted in the treated animals. The beneficial effects of these Bacillus spores on pulmonary fibrosis were further found to be greater than the equivalent free SOD concentration. Immunofluorescence staining of primary pulmonary fibroblasts extracted from the bleomycin-induced model showed decreased αSMA expression following the in vivo treatment with SOD-overexpressing Bacillus. Our treatment approach SOD through Bacillus spores shows beneficial effects against pulmonary fibrosis, combined with the suppression of the SMAD/TGF-β pathway, suggesting that it is an effective novel delivery route for antioxidants.

Purpose: To identify changes in prostate cancer (PCa) risk-stratification during the last two decades in Korea, where the social perception of PCa was limited due to a relatively low incidence but has recently been triggered by the rapidly increasing incidence of benign prostate hyperplasia. Materials and Methods: Retrospective data of patients who had received a diagnosis of PCa in a single Korean province (Daegu-Gyeongsangbuk) at all seven training hospitals in the years 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2021 were subjected to analysis. Changes in PCa risk-stratification were investigated with respect to serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), Gleason score (GS), and clinical stage. Results: Of the 3,393 study subjects that received a diagnosis of PCa, 64.1% had high-risk disease, 23.0% intermediate, and 12.9% low-risk disease. The proportion diagnosed with high-risk disease was 54.8% in 2003, 30.6% in 2019, but then increased to 35.1% in 2021. The proportion of patients with high PSA (>20 ng/mL) steadily decreased from 59.4% in 2003 to 29.6% in 2021, whereas the proportion with a high GS (>8) increased from 32.8% in 2011 to 34.0% in 2021, and the proportion with advanced stage disease (over cT2c) increased from 26.5% in 2011 to 37.1% in 2021. Conclusions: In this retrospective study, conducted in a single Korean province, high-risk PCa accounted for the largest proportion of newly registered Korean PCa patients during the last two decades and increased in the early 2020s. This outcome supports the adoption of nationwide PSA screening, regardless of current Western guidelines.
