The distribution of mammalian pests is altered by changes in global climate and land cover. Rattus norvegicus is a significant pest that contributes to the catastrophic decline of native species. Therefore, the studies identifying potentially suitable habitats for Rattus norvegicus and the impact of future climate change on the extent of such habitats are crucial. In this study, we determined the effects of key environmental and ecological variables on Rattus norvegicus in South Korea by considering multiple climate changes, land cover, and dispersal scenarios. The available presence locations with the least correlated variables and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model along with multiple Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios were utilized to project current and future habitat suitability. Additionally, three dispersal scenarios were incorporated into the model to enrich the analysis of potential future distribution. Mean diurnal temperature, elevation, and nighttime light were the three most important variables contributing to the species' distribution. The coastal and northern regions of South Korea constitute currently suitable habitats and are expected to exhibit a significant increase in the species' population under future climate projections. The results demonstrate the potential expansion of Rattus norvegicus as a result of changes in climate and land cover and provide crucial insights into the species' environmental niches. An ideal extracellular matrix (ECM) replacement scaffold in a three-dimensional cell (3D) culture should induce in vivo-like interactions between the ECM and cultured cells. Highly hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers disintegrate upon contact with water, resulting in the loss of their fibrous morphology in cell cultures. This can be resolved by using chemical crosslinkers and post-crosslinking. A crosslinked, water-stable, porous, and optically transparent PVA nanofibrous membrane (NM) supports the 3D growth of various cell types. The binding of cells attached to the porous PVA NM is low, resulting in the aggregation of cultured cells in prolonged cultures. PVA NMs containing integrin-binding peptides of fibronectin and laminin were produced to retain the blended peptides as cell-binding substrates. These peptide-blended PVA NMs promote peptide-specific cell adherence and growth. Various cells, including epithelial cells, cultured on these PVA NMs form layers instead of cell aggregates and spheroids, and their growth patterns are similar to those of the cells cultured on an ECM-coated PVA NM. The peptide-retained PVA NMs are non-stimulatory to dendritic cells cultured on the membranes. These peptide-retaining PVA NMs can be used as an ECM replacement matrix by providing in vivo-like interactions between the matrix and cultured cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As various healthcare technologies such as regenerative medicine, precision medicine, and alternative approaches to animal testing develop, the interest in the use and application of nano- and microfibers is steadily increasing. In this study, the effect of parylene-C coating on electrospun fibers was investigated, and a pattern coating method was developed to expand the potential utilization of parylene-C-coated electrospun fibers. An SEM analysis demonstrated that parylene-C was successfully deposited on the electrospun fibers without any failure such as pinholes or air bubbles. Biocompatibility was investigated through cell tests, which indicated that the coated fibers were non-toxic and supported cell growth well. Tensile tests demonstrated a significant increase in the elastic modulus of the parylene-C-coated fibers, with it nearly quadrupling compared to the original PCL fibers, and the fracture strength almost doubled. At the same time, hydrophobicity was well maintained without any statistically significant changes. In particular, a non-adhesive magnet–metal masking was proposed in order to selectively coat the electrospun fibers with parylene-C with a specific pattern. Furthermore, it was presented that the magnet–metal mask-based coating electrospun nanofibers with parylene-C could be used in the fabrication of hybrid fibers composed of different diameters and materials. BaTiO3(BT)‐templated 0.5Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.16PbZrO3–0.34PbTiO3 with 0.2 wt% Li2CO3 (PNN‐PZT + LC) ceramics were successfully sintered at temperatures less than 1050°C. Their structural, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties were systematically investigated as a function of amount of BT, which ranged from 2 to 10 vol%. The PNN‐PZT + LC ceramics sintered at 1000°C showed highly textured morphologies with preferred (0 0 1) orientation, having Lotgering factors (fL) of 85% and higher. When sintering temperature exceeded 1000°C, the epitaxial grain growth of PNN‐PZT + LC rhombohedral phase, driven by BT templates, was hindered by dramatically enlarged matrix grains. In situ X‐ray diffractometry analyses are performed to identify phase transition behavior depending on temperature. Properties of d33 (1180 pC/N) and kp (80.3%) were obtained for the 2 vol% BT‐templated PNN‐PZT + LC ceramic sintered at 1000°C, along with ferroelectric properties of 2Pr (56.1 μC/cm2) and 2Ec (1.26 kV/mm) at 3.5 kV/mm. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and piezo‐response force microscopy were utilized to investigate domain structure and epitaxial grain growth between templated BaTiO3 and matrix ceramics. The low‐temperature sintered specimen showed an extremely large electrostrain characteristic (d33*) of 1215 pm/V at 1 kV/mm. Furthermore, textured multilayer piezoelectric actuators exhibited higher actuator performance and lower energy loss compared to untextured multilayer piezoelectric actuators, indicating their potential for use in piezoelectric actuator devices. Simple Summary: Our comprehensive study using camera traps in the Halla Mountain Wetland offers significant insights into the temporal activities and habitat preferences of Passerine birds. Key findings include distinct morning activities in species such as Cyanoptila cyanomelana and Horornis canturians and afternoon peaks in others such as Muscicapa dauurica. We observed a preference for wetlands and an underutilization of grasslands, indicating complex species–habitat interactions. Additionally, our study highlights the impact of population density on habitat usage and reveals substantial variations in seasonal activity among different species, demonstrating their adaptive strategies. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the ecological dynamics and niche partitioning within these bird communities. However, the fixed field of view and intermittent recording capability of camera traps can miss certain activities, and external factors such as weather and human presence can influence the observed behavior. While providing valuable insights, this study underscores the need to integrate camera trap data with other observational methods for a more comprehensive understanding of avian behavior. This study analyzed 5322 camera trap photographs from Halla Mountain Wetland, documenting 1427 independent bird sightings of 26 families and 49 species of Passeriformes. Key observations include morning activities in Cyanoptila cyanomelana and Horornis canturians and afternoon activity in Muscicapa dauurica and Phoenicurus auroreus. Wetlands were significantly preferred (P_i = 0.398) despite their smaller area, contrasting with underutilized grasslands (P_i = 0.181). Seasonal activity variations were notable, with overlap coefficients ranging from 0.08 to 0.81 across species, indicating diverse strategies in resource utilization and thermoregulation. Population density was found to be a critical factor in habitat usage, with high-density species showing more consistent activity patterns. The study's results demonstrate the ecological adaptability of Passeriformes in the Halla Mountain Wetland while highlighting the limitations of camera trapping methods. These limitations include their fixed field of view and intermittent recording capability, which may not fully capture the spectrum of complex avian behaviors. This research underlines the need for future studies integrating various methodologies, such as direct observation and acoustic monitoring, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of avian ecology.
