Abstract

Background and purpose: The co‐occurrence of amyloid‐β pathology in Parkinson's disease (PD) is common; however, the role of amyloid‐β deposition in motor prognosis remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate the association between striatal amyloid deposition, motor complications and motor prognosis in patients with PD. Methods: Ninety‐six patients with PD who underwent 18F florbetaben (FBB) positron emission tomography were retrospectively assessed. The ratio of the striatum to global (STG) FBB uptake was obtained for each individual, and patients were allotted into low and high STG groups according to the median value. The effect of STG group on regional amyloid deposition, the occurrence of motor complications and longitudinal change in levodopa equivalent dose (LED) requirement were investigated after controlling for age, sex, LED and disease duration at FBB scan. Results: The high STG group was associated with lower cortical FBB uptake in the parietal, occipital and posterior cingulate cortices and higher striatal FBB uptake compared to the low STG group. Patients in the high STG group had a higher risk of developing wearing off and levodopa‐induced dyskinesia than those in the low STG group, whereas the risk for freezing of gait was comparable between the two groups. The high STG group showed a more rapid increase in LED requirements over time than the low STG group. Conclusions: These findings suggest that relatively high striatal amyloid deposition is associated with poor motor outcomes in patients with PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. The potential of artificial dermis grafting following basal cell carcinoma removal on the lower eyelid.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the potential use of artificial dermal grafts in the lower eyelid following surgical resection of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), focusing on the degree of scar contracture. Postoperative changes were assessed using four quantitative and two qualitative parameters. Anthropometric analysis revealed no statistically significant differences across the four quantitative measures. Furthermore, no new cases of ectropion or scleral show were observed after grafting. These findings suggest that artificial dermal grafting may be a viable option following surgical excision of BCCs on the lower eyelids, without inducing significant eyelid retraction. Abstract

Development of high‐precision RGB patterning process is needed to implement high‐resolution micro display (OLEDoS) for next‐generation VR/AR products. In general, specially designed and manufactured masks are required to realize above 3000‐ppi high‐resolution display in structured OLED material deposition. In this study, we developed direct laser patterning IR‐fs optical system operating in MHz and GHz burst modes and evaluated its capability for precise micro‐drilling of aluminoborosilicate glass materials. The fine hole‐shaped pattern is produced at a minimum of 5 μm pitch level for about 0.6 in. area without sacrificing the glass strength. It is expected to contribute to the high precise manufacture of ultra fine mask (UFM) using thin glass platform corresponding to micro displays in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common cancer among men in the United States and one of the leading causes of cancer death, with approximately 27,000 deaths per year [...], Epigenetic modifications control cancer development and clonal evolution in various cancer types. Here, we show that loss of the male-specific histone demethylase lysine-specific demethylase 5D (KDM5D) encoded on the Y chromosome epigenetically modifies histone methylation marks and alters gene expression, resulting in aggressive prostate cancer. Fluorescent in situ hybridization demonstrated that segmental or total deletion of the Y chromosome in prostate cancer cells is one of the causes of decreased KDM5D mRNA expression. The result of ChIP-sequencing analysis revealed that KDM5D preferably binds to promoter regions with coenrichment of the motifs of crucial transcription factors that regulate the cell cycle. Loss of KDM5D expression with dysregulated H3K4me3 transcriptional marks was associated with acceleration of the cell cycle and mitotic entry, leading to increased DNA-replication stress. Analysis of multiple clinical data sets reproducibly showed that loss of expression of KDM5D confers a poorer prognosis. Notably, we also found stress-induced DNA damage on the serine/threonine protein kinase ATR with loss of KDM5D. In KDM5D-deficient cells, blocking ATR activity with an ATR inhibitor enhanced DNA damage, which led to subsequent apoptosis. These data start to elucidate the biological characteristics resulting from loss of KDM5D and also provide clues for a potential novel therapeutic approach for this subset of aggressive prostate cancer.
