We propose a novel baryogenesis scenario where the baryon asymmetry originates directly from a hierarchy between two fundamental mass scales: the electroweak scale $v$ and the Planck scale $M_P$, in the form of \begin{equation} Y_B \sim \sqrt{\frac{v}{M_P}} \, . \nonumber \end{equation} This relation straightforwardly gives the observed baryon yield today $Y_B$, which can be a hint for underlying fundamental physics. We provide an example of baryogenesis models that yield this relation. Our model is based on the neutrino-portal Affleck-Dine mechanism, which generates the asymmetry of the Affleck-Dine sector during the radiation-dominated era and subsequently transfers it to the baryon number before the electroweak phase transition. The observed baryon asymmetry is then a natural outcome of this scenario. The model is testable as it predicts the existence of a Majoron with a keV mass and an electroweak scale decay constant. In the presence of an anomalous CP phase in a U(1) gauge theory, a monopole becomes a dyon via the Witten effect. When the anomalous CP phase is promoted to a dynamical field, the axion, the electric charge of the dyon changes according to the coherent motion of the axion oscillation. Once the electric charge exceeds a certain threshold, the Schwinger pair production of charged particles becomes efficient near the surface of the dyon. These non-perturbative effects lead to the back reaction of the axion dynamics by causing the dissipation of the axion oscillation energy and the change of the effective potential due to the Witten effect. Taking these effects into account, we consider the dynamics of the whole system, including the axion, monopole, and charged heavy vector bosons, and discuss to what extent the axion abundance is modified. We propose a minimal gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) which resolves the cosmological moduli problem via thermal inflation, and realizes late-time Affleck-Dine leptogensis so as to generate the right amount of baryon asymmetry at the end of thermal inflation. The present relic density of dark matter can be explained by sneutrinos, MSSM neutralinos, axinos, or axions. Cosmic strings from $U(1)_{B-L}$ breaking are very thick, and so the expected stochastic gravitational wave background from cosmic string loops has a spectrum different from the one in the conventional Abelian-Higgs model, as would be distinguishable at least at LISA and DECIGO. The characteristic spectrum is due to a flat potential, and may be regarded as a hint of supersymmetry. Combined with the resolution of moduli problem, the expected signal of gravitational waves constrains the $U(1)_{B-L}$ breaking scale to be $\mathcal{O}(10^{12-13})\,{\rm GeV}$. Interestingly, our model provides a natural possibility for explaining the observed ultra-high-energy cosmic rays thanks to the fact that the core width of strings in our scenario is very large, allowing a large enhancement of particle emissions from the cusps of string loops. Allowing a high quality factor (Q-factor) to a sub-wavelength dielectric resonator, quasi-bound states in the continuum (Q-BIC) has gained much interest. However, the Q-BIC resonance condition is too sensitive to the geometry of the resonator and its practical broadband generation on a single-wafer platform has been limited. Here, we present that employing the base angle as a structural degree of freedom, the truncated nano-cone resonator supports the Q-BIC resonance with a high Q-factor of >150 over a wide wavelength range of >100 nm. We show that dark matter axions or axion-like particles (ALP) induce spontaneously alternating electric currents in conductors along the external magnetic fields due to the (medium) axial anomaly, realizing the chiral magnetic effects (CME). We propose a new experiment to measure this current to detect the dark matter axions or ALP. These induced currents are the electron medium effects, directly proportional to the axion or ALP coupling to electrons, which depends on their microscopic physics. In the experimental setup one measures the sum of the electric current due to CME and the vacuum current due to the anomalous axion-photon coupling. The CME current is in general subdominant by a factor of the Fermi velocity of electrons, compared to latter, unless the axion or ALP coupling to electrons is much bigger than its coupling to photons to compensate the Fermi velocity suppression. We study cosmological effects of explicit Peccei-Quinn breaking on the QCD axion dark matter. We find that the axion abundance decreases or increases significantly depending on the initial position, even for a tiny Peccei-Quinn breaking that satisfies the experimental bound of the neutron electric dipole measurements. If the axion first starts to oscillate around a wrong vacuum and if it gets trapped there until the false vacuum disappears due to non-perturbative QCD effects, its abundance increases significantly and is independent of the decay constant $f_a$, as first pointed out in [JHEP 06 (2016) 150]. Thus, the axion produced by the trapping mechanism can explain dark matter even when the decay constant is close to the lower limit due to stellar cooling arguments. On the other hand, if the axion starts to oscillate about a potential minimum close to the low-energy vacuum, its abundance is significantly reduced because of the adiabatic suppression mechanism. This relaxes the upper limit of the axion window to large values of $f_a$. We also discuss how the axionic isocurvature perturbation is affected by the Peccei-Quinn breaking term, and show that it can be suppressed in both regimes. In particular, the isocurvature bound on the inflation scale is relaxed by many orders of magnitudes for $f_a \lesssim 10^{11}{\rm GeV}$ compared to the conventional scenario., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures

We show that an axionlike particle (ALP) naturally implements spontaneous electroweak baryogenesis through a cosmic evolution strongly tied to the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) if it feebly couples to the Higgs field while giving a small contribution to the Higgs boson mass. The observed baryon asymmetry can be generated successfully if the ALP couples strongly enough to the electroweak anomaly. Also interesting is that the ALP contributes to dark matter, and its coupling to a hidden gauge sector makes the relic abundance insensitive to the cosmic history before the EWPT. The ALP explains both the baryon asymmetry and dark matter in a wide range of the couplings owing to the friction induced by the hidden gauge sector. To be compatible with cosmological and astrophysical observations, the ALP should have a mass in the range between about 0.01 and 30 eV, and is further required to be photophobic if its coupling to the electroweak anomaly is strong, constraining the field content and charge assignment of the UV completion., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, v3: matches published version

We show that string moduli have axion-philic nature owing to the model-insensitive derivative interactions arising from the Kaehler potential. The decay of a modulus into stringy axions occurs without suppression by the mass of final states. Interestingly, it turns out to hold in general not only for the scalar partner of the stringy axion but also for any other moduli. The decay into (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons (NGBs) also avoids such mass suppression if the modulus is lighter than or similar in mass to the scalar partner of the NGB. Such axion-philic nature makes string moduli a natural source of an observable amount of dark radiation in string compactifications involving ultralight stringy axions, and possibly in extensions of the Standard Model that include a cosmologically stable NGB such as the QCD axion. The new measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of muon at the Fermilab Muon $g-2$ experiment has strengthened the significance of the discrepancy between the standard model prediction and the experimental observation from the BNL measurement. If new physics responsible for the muon $g-2$ anomaly is supersymmetric, one should consider how to obtain light electroweakinos and sleptons in a systematic way. The gauge coupling unification allows a robust prediction of the gaugino masses, indicating that the electroweakinos can be much lighter than the gluino if anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking is sizable. We realize high scale supersymmetry in the mirage mediation. The Higgs sector is extended with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and the higgsino mass term is generated by the Kim-Nilles mechanism. In particular, the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking scale naturally lies on the mirage messenger scale due to the mixed modulus-anomaly mediation with the gauge coupling unification. Consequently, the higgsino mass term is of order the weak scale while the gravitino mass is of PeV order. This hierarchy naturally leads to the correct electroweak symmetry breaking. The higgsinos are thus in the range accessible at future lepton colliders, while other sparticles are well-above the current LHC reach and consistent with the observed Higgs boson. We present a scenario where an axion-like field drives inflation until a potential barrier, which keeps a waterfall field at the origin, disappears and a waterfall transition occurs. Such a barrier separates the scale of inflation from that of the waterfall transition. We find the observed spectrum of the cosmic microwave background indicates that the decay constant of the inflaton is well below the Planck scale, with the inflationary Hubble parameter spanning a wide range. Further, our model involves dark matter candidates including the inflaton itself. Mirage mediation realized in the Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi (KKLT) flux compactification can naturally suppress the up-type Higgs soft mass at low energy scales. As a result, compared to the conventional scenarios, the degree of electroweak fine-tuning can be reduced further up to by a loop factor if the Higgsinos are much lighter than the heavy Higgs doublet. Interestingly, this feature holds even in high-scale supersymmetry as long as the gauge coupling unification, which is required as a prerequisite for mirage mediation, accommodates such light Higgsinos. A single photon source with high repeatability and low uncertainties is the key element for few-photon metrology based on photon numbers. While low photon number fluctuations and high repeatability are important figures for qualification as a standard light source, these characteristics are limited in single photon emitters by some malicious phenomena like blinking or internal relaxations to varying degrees in different materials. This study seeks to characterize photon number fluctuations and repeatability for radiometry applications at room temperature. For generality in this study, we collected photon statistics data with various single photon emitters of $g^{(2)}(0) < 1$ at low excitation power and room temperature in three material platforms: silicon vacancy in diamond, defects in GaN, and vacancy in hBN. We found common factors related with the relaxation times of the internal states that indirectly affect photon number stability. We observed a high stability of photon number with defects in GaN due to faster relaxations compared with vacancies in hBN, which on the other hand produced high rates ($> 10^6$) of photons per second. Finally, we demonstrate repeatable radiant flux measurements of a bright hBN single photon emitter for a wide radiant flux range from a few tens of femtowatts to one picowatt., Comment: Submitted to: Materials for Quantum Technology (IOP)

Solid-state quantum emitters (QEs) are fundamental in photonic-based quantum information processing. There is strong interest to develop high-quality QEs in III-nitride semiconductors because of their sophisticated manufacturing driven by large and growing applications in optoelectronics, high voltage power transistors, and microwave amplifiers. Here, we report the generation and direct integration of QEs in an aluminium nitride-based photonic integrated circuit platform. For individual waveguide-integrated QEs, we measure an off-chip count rate exceeding $6 \times 10^{4}$ counts per second (cps) (saturation rate > $8.6 \times 10^{4}$ cps). In an unpatterned thin-film sample, we measure antibunching with $g^{(2)}(0) \sim 0.05$ and photon count rates exceeding $8 \times 10^{5}$ cps (saturation rate > $1 \times 10^{6}$ cps). Topological photonics provides a fundamental framework for robust manipulation of light, including directional transport and localization with built-in immunity to disorder. Combined with an optical gain, active topological cavities hold special promise for a design of light-emitting devices. Most studies to date have focused on lasing at topological edges of finite systems or domain walls. Recently discovered higher-order topological phases enable strong high-quality confinement of light at the corners. Here we demonstrate lasing action of corner states in a nanophotonic topological cavity. We identify four multipole corner modes with distinct emission profiles via hyperspectral imaging and discern signatures of non-Hermitian radiative coupling of leaky topological states. In addition, depending on the pump position in a large-size cavity, we selectively generate lasing from either edge or corner states within the topological bandgap. Apparatus for fluorescence-based single photon generation includes collection optics and various setups for characterization. Managing this system often reveals complexity in such a way that adjusting in a small region changes optimal alignments of others. We suggest here a modular system, where the optimal alignment is given to each compartment and tested independently. Based on this concept, we built a system for single photon generation with fluorescence center in hexagonal boron nitride nano-flake, advantageous for scaling up the number of single mode fiber output and a high degree of stability. We present an interesting Higgs portal model where an axion-like particle (ALP) couples to the Standard Model sector only via the Higgs field. The ALP becomes stable due to CP invariance and turns out to be a natural candidate for freeze-in dark matter because its properties are controlled by the perturbative ALP shift symmetry. The portal coupling can be generated non-perturbatively by a hidden confining gauge sector, or radiatively by new leptons charged under the ALP shift symmetry. Physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) may manifest itself as small deviations from the SM predictions for Higgs signal strengths at 125 GeV. Then, a plausible and interesting possibility is that the Higgs sector is extended and at the weak scale there appears an additional Higgs boson weakly coupled to the SM sector. Combined with the LEP excess in $e^+e^-\to Z(h\to b\bar b)$, the diphoton excess around 96 GeV recently reported by CMS may suggest such a possibility. We examine if those LEP and CMS excesses can be explained simultaneously by a singlet-like Higgs boson in the general next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). Higgs mixing in the NMSSM relies on the singlet coupling to the MSSM Higgs doublets and the higgsino mass parameter, and thus is subject to the constraints on these supersymmetric parameters. We find that the NMSSM can account for both the LEP and CMS excesses at 96 GeV while accommodating the observed 125 GeV SM-like Higgs boson. Interestingly, the required mixing angles constrain the heavy doublet Higgs boson to be heavier than about 500 GeV. An axion-like particle (ALP) offers a new direction in electroweak baryogenesis because the periodic nature enables it to trigger a strong first-order phase transition insensitively to the decay constant $f$. For $f$ much above TeV, the ALP-induced electroweak phase transition is approximately described by adiabatic processes, distinguishing our scenario for electroweak baryogenesis from the conventional ones. We show that, coupled to the electroweak anomaly, the ALP can naturally realize spontaneous electroweak baryogenesis to solve the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem for $f$ in the range between about $10^5$ GeV and $10^7$ GeV. In such an ALP window, the $CP$ violation for baryogenesis is totally free from the experimental constraints, especially from the recently improved limit on the electron electric dipole moment. An axion can make the electroweak phase transition strongly first-order as required for electroweak baryogenesis even if it is weakly coupled to the Higgs sector. This is essentially because the axion periodicity naturally allows the structure of phase transition to be insensitive to the axion decay constant that determines the strength of axion interactions. Furthermore, the axion can serve as a CP phase relevant to electroweak baryogenesis if one introduces an effective axion coupling to the top quark Yukawa operator. Then, for $f$ between about TeV and order $10$~TeV, the observed baryon asymmetry can be explained while avoiding current experimental constraints. The relaxation mechanism, which solves the electroweak hierarchy problem without relying on TeV scale new physics, crucially depends on how a Higgs-dependent back-reaction potential is generated. In this paper, we suggest a new scenario in which the scalar potential induced by the QCD anomaly is responsible both for the relaxation mechanism and the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to solve the strong CP problem. The key idea is to introduce the relaxion and the QCD axion whose cosmic evolutions become quite different depending on an inflaton-dependent scalar potential. Our scheme raises the cutoff scale of the Higgs mass up to 10^7 GeV, and allows reheating temperature higher than the electroweak scale as would be required for viable cosmology. In addition, the QCD axion can account for the observed dark matter of the universe as produced by the conventional misalignment mechanism. We also consider the possibility that the couplings of the Standard Model depend on the inflaton and become stronger during inflation.
