The Silicon Vertex Detector of Belle II is a state-of-the-art tracking and vertexing system based on double-sided silicon strip sensors, designed and fabricated by a large international collaboration in the period 2012--2018. Since 2019 it has been in operation providing high quality data with a small number of defective channels (99%), a good signal-to-noise ratio (well in excess of 10 for all sensor configurations and tracks). Together with the good control over the alignment, these are all essential factors to achieve good tracking reconstruction and physics performance. In this extended paper we try to document all the aspects of the SVD challenges and achievements, in the spirit of providing information to the broader community and help the development of high quality detector systems, which are fundamental tools to carry out physics research., 199 pages, 152 figures

In 2019 the Belle II experiment started data taking at the asymmetric SuperKEKB collider (KEK, Japan) operating at the Y(4S) resonance. Belle II will search for new physics beyond the Standard Model by collecting an integrated luminosity of 50~ab$^{-1}$. The silicon vertex detector (SVD), consisting of four layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors, is one of the two vertex sub-detectors. The SVD extrapolates the tracks to the inner pixel detector (PXD) with enough precision to correctly identify hits in the PXD belonging to the track. In addition the SVD has standalone tracking capability and utilizes ionization to enhance particle identification in the low momentum region. The SVD is operating reliably and with high efficiency, despite exposure to the harsh beam background of the highest peak-luminosity collider ever built. High signal-to-noise ratio and hit efficiency have been measured, as well as the spatial resolution; all these quantities show excellent stability over time. Data-simulation agreement on cluster properties has recently been improved through a careful tuning of the simulation. The precise hit-time resolution can be exploited to reject out-of-time hits induced by beam background, which will make the SVD more robust against higher levels of background. During the first three years of running, radiation damage effects on strip noise, sensor currents and depletion voltage have been observed, as well as some coupling capacitor failure due to intense radiation bursts. International audience; The Belle II silicon vertex detector is one of the vertex detectors in the Belle II experiment. The detector reads out the signals from the double-sided silicon strip sensors with the APV25 front-end readout ASIC, adopting the chip-on-sensor concept to minimize the strip noise. The detector has been operated in the experiment since the spring of 2019. Analyzing the acquired data during the beam collisions, the excellent performance of the detector is confirmed. Also, the radiation dose and 1-MeV equivalent neutron fluence of the detector are estimated using the measured dose rates of the diamond sensors installed on the beam pipe and are compared with the measured radiation effects in the strip noise, leakage current, and depletion voltage. This paper briefly introduces the main features of the silicon vertex detector, and then reports on the measured performance and radiation effects of the first two years of running experience of the detector.

We present measurements of partial branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B→Xuℓ+νℓ decays using the full Belle dataset of 711 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at the ϒ(4S) resonance and for ℓ=e, μ. Inclusive semileptonic B→Xuℓ+νℓ decays are Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) suppressed and measurements are complicated by the large background from CKM favored B→Xcℓ+νℓ transitions, which have a similar signature. Using machine learning techniques, we reduce this and other backgrounds effectively, while retaining access to a large fraction of the B→Xuℓ+νℓ phase space and high signal efficiency. We measure partial branching fractions in three phase-space regions covering about 31% to 86% of the accessible B→Xuℓ+νℓ phase space. The most inclusive measurement corresponds to the phase space with lepton energies of EℓB>1 GeV, and we obtain ΔB(B→Xuℓ+νℓ)=(1.59±0.07±0.16)×10-3 from a two-dimensional fit of the hadronic mass spectrum and the four-momentum-transfer squared distribution, with the uncertainties denoting the statistical and systematic error. We find |Vub|=(4.10±0.09±0.22±0.15)×10-3 from an average of four calculations for the partial decay rate with the third uncertainty denoting the average theory error. This value is higher but compatible with the determination from exclusive semileptonic decays within 1.3 standard deviations. In addition, we report charmless inclusive partial branching fractions separately for B+ and B0 mesons as well as for electron and muon final states. No isospin breaking or lepton flavor universality violating effects are observed. We report measurements of branching fractions ($\mathcal B$) and direct ${\it CP}$-violating asymmetries ($\mathcal A_{\it CP}$) for the decays $B^+\to K^+\pi^0$ and $B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0$ reconstructed with the Belle II detector in a sample of asymmetric-energy electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance corresponding to 62.8 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The results are $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = [11.9 ^{+1.1}_{-1.0} (\rm stat)\pm 1.6(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = [5.5 ^{+1.0}_{-0.9} (\rm stat)\pm 0.7(\rm syst)]\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to K^+\pi^0) = -0.09 \pm 0.09 (\rm stat)\pm 0.03(\rm syst)$, and $\mathcal A_{\it CP}(B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) = -0.04 \pm 0.17 (\rm stat)\pm 0.06(\rm syst)$. The results are consistent with previous measurements and show a detector performance comparable with early Belle performance.

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays $B\to K \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $B\to K e^{+}e^{-}$, and their ratio ($R_{K}$), using a data sample of 711 $fb^{-1}$ that contains $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events. The data were collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The ratio $R_{K}$ is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared ($q^{2}$): $q^{2} \in (0.1, 4.0), (4.0, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0)$, $(10.2, 12.8)$ and ($>14.18) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$, along with the whole $q^2$ region. The $R_{K}$ value for $q^{2} \in (1.0, 6.0) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$ is $1.03^{+0.28}_{-0.24} \pm 0.01$. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for $R_{K}$ are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure $C\!P$-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same $q^{2}$ bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the $q^{2}\in(1.0,6.0) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$ bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, ${d\cal B}/{dq^{2}}$, are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged $B$ decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral $B$ decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating $B \rightarrow K\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$ decays and set $90\%$ confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of $10^{-8}$ for $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$, and $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$ modes., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We report the first measurement of the charm-mixing parameter y$_{CP}$ in D$^{0}$ decays to the CP-odd final state K0¦Sω. The study uses the full Belle e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ annihilation data sample of 976 fb$^{-1}$ taken at or near the Υ(4S) centre-of-mass energy. We find y$_{CP}$=(0.96±0.91±0.62(+0.17)¦(-0.00))%, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic due to event selection and background, and the last is due to possible presence of CP-even decays in the data sample.

We report the study of \OK \ and \SK \ using a $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pair data sample recorded on the $\Upsilon({\rm 4S})$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. The following branching fractions are measured: $\mathcal{B}$(\OKPHSP) $=$ $(4.22^{+0.45}_{-0.44}\pm 0.51)\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\SKPHSP) $=$ $(3.81^{+0.39}_{-0.37} \pm 0.45)\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACD+c.c.) $=$ $(2.91^{+0.37}_{-0.35}\pm 0.36)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\PLPHI) $=$ $(8.18 \pm 2.15 \pm 0.79)\times10^{-7}$, where c.c. denotes the corresponding charge-conjugation process. The intermediate resonance decays are excluded in the four-body decay measurements. We also found evidences for $\mathcal{B}$(\ETACS+c.c.) $=$ $(3.59 \pm 1.52 \pm 0.47) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}$(\LLKO) $=$ $(2.30 \pm 0.65 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-6}$. No significant signals are found for \JPSIS+c.c. and \LLKS \ ; we set the 90\% confidence level upper limits on their decay branching fractions as $< 1.85\times10^{-3}$ and $< 2.14\times10^{-6}$, respectively., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables Submitted to Phys. The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \tau^- \bar{\nu}_{\tau})/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \bar{\nu}_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the Standard Model predictions, and might hint to a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$, based on a data sample containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. In this analysis the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side $\tau$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*) = 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$, $1.1$ and $0.8$ standard deviations for $\mathcal{R}(D)$, $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{R}(D)$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^*)$ performed to date as well as the first result for $\mathcal{R}(D)$ based on a semileptonic tagging method., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letters

- Abstract
The Belle II detector will provide a major step forward in precision heavy flavor physics, quarkonium and exotic states, searches for dark sectors, and many other areas. The sensitivity to a large number of key observables can be improved by about an order of magnitude compared to the current measurements, and up to two orders in very clean search measurements. This increase in statistical precision arises not only due to the increased luminosity, but also from improved detector efficiency and precision for many channels. Many of the most interesting observables tend to have very small theoretical uncertainties that will therefore not limit the physics reach. This book has presented many new ideas for measurements, both to elucidate the nature of current anomalies seen in flavor, and to search for new phenomena in a plethora of observables that will become accessible with the Belle II dataset. The simulation used for the studiesinthis book was state ofthe artat the time, though weare learning a lot more about the experiment during the commissioning period. The detector is in operation, and working spectacularly well.
