Recent progresses in magnetoionics offer exciting potentials to leverage its non-linearity, short-term memory, and energy-efficiency to uniquely advance the field of physical reservoir computing. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the classification of temporal data using a magneto-ionic (MI) heterostructure. The device was specifically engineered to induce non-linear ion migration dynamics, which in turn imparted non-linearity and short-term memory (STM) to the magnetization. These capabilities, key features for enabling reservoir computing, were investigated, and the role of the ion migration mechanism, along with its history-dependent influence on STM, was explained. These attributes were utilized to distinguish between sine and square waveforms within a randomly distributed set of pulses. Additionally, two important performance metrics, short-term memory and parity check capacity (PC), were quantified, yielding promising values of 1.44 and 2, respectively, comparable to those of other state-of-the-art reservoirs. Our work paves the way for exploiting the relaxation dynamics of solid-state magneto-ionic platforms and developing energy-efficient magneto-ionic reservoir computing devices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the urgent need for the development of efficient, durable, reusable and recyclable filtration media for the deep-submicron size range. Here we demonstrate a multifunctional filtration platform using porous metallic nanowire foams that are efficient, robust, antimicrobial, and reusable, with the potential to further guard against multiple hazards. We have investigated the foam microstructures, detailing how the growth parameters influence the overall surface area and characteristic feature size, as well as the effects of the microstructures on the filtration performance. Nanogranules deposited on the nanowires during electrodeposition are found to greatly increase the surface area, up to 20 m$^{2}$/g. Surprisingly, in the high surface area regime, the overall surface area gained from the nanogranules has little correlation with the improvement in capture efficiency. However, nanowire density and diameter play a significant role in the capture efficiency of PM$_{0.3}$ particles, as do the surface roughness of the nanowire fibers and their characteristic feature sizes. Antimicrobial tests on the Cu foams show a >99.9995% inactivation efficiency after contacting the foams for 30 seconds. At what level does selective pressure effectively act? When considering the reproductive dynamics of interacting and mutating agents, it has long been debated whether selection is better understood by focusing on the individual or if hierarchical selection emerges as a consequence of joint adaptation. Despite longstanding efforts in theoretical ecology there is still no consensus on this fundamental issue, most likely due to the difficulty in obtaining adequate data spanning sufficient number of generations and the lack of adequate tools to quantify the effect of hierarchical selection. Here we capitalise on recent advances in information-theoretic data analysis to advance this state of affairs by investigating the emergence of high-order structures -- such as groups of species -- in the collective dynamics of the Tangled Nature model of evolutionary ecology. Our results show that evolutionary dynamics can lead to clusters of species that act as a selective group, that acquire information-theoretic agency. Overall, our findings provide quantitative evidence supporting the relevance of high-order structures in evolutionary ecology, which can emerge even from relatively simple processes of adaptation and selection.

Ferrimagnets have received renewed attention as a promising platform for spintronic applications. Of particular interest is the Mn4N from the ${\epsilon}$-phase of the manganese nitride as an emergent rare-earth-free spintronic material due to its perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, small saturation magnetization, high thermal stability, and large domain wall velocity. We have achieved high-quality (001)-ordered Mn$_{4}$N thin film by sputtering Mn onto ${\eta}$-phase Mn$_{3}$N$_{2}$ seed layers on Si substrates. As the deposited Mn thickness varies, nitrogen ion migration across the Mn$_{3}$N$_{2}$/Mn layers leads to a continuous evolution of the layers to Mn$_{3}$N$_{2}$/Mn$_{2}$N/Mn$_{4}$N, Mn$_{2}$N/Mn$_{4}$N, and eventually Mn$_{4}$N alone. The ferrimagnetic Mn$_{4}$N indeed exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and forms via a nucleation-and-growth mechanism. The nitrogen ion migration is also manifested in a significant exchange bias, up to 0.3 T at 5 K, due to the interactions between ferrimagnetic Mn$_{4}$N and antiferromagnetic Mn$_{3}$N$_{2}$ and Mn$_{2}$N. Electric field control of the exchange bias effect across ferromagnet/antiferromagnet (FM/AF) interfaces has offered exciting potentials for low-energy-dissipation spintronics. In particular, the solid state magneto-ionic means is highly appealing as it may allow reconfigurable electronics by transforming the all-important FM/AF interfaces through ionic migration. In this work, we demonstrate an approach that combines the chemically induced magneto-ionic effect with the electric field driving of nitrogen in the Ta/Co$_{0.7}$Fe$_{0.3}$/MnN/Ta structure to electrically manipulate exchange bias. Upon field-cooling the heterostructure, ionic diffusion of nitrogen from MnN into the Ta layers occurs. A significant exchange bias of 618 Oe at 300 K and 1484 Oe at 10 K is observed, which can be further enhanced after a voltage conditioning by 5% and 19%, respectively. This enhancement can be reversed by voltage conditioning with an opposite polarity. Nitrogen migration within the MnN layer and into the Ta capping layer cause the enhancement in exchange bias, which is observed in polarized neutron reflectometry studies. Interconnected magnetic nanowire (NW) networks offer a promising platform for 3-dimensional (3D) information storage and integrated neuromorphic computing. Here we report discrete propagation of magnetic states in interconnected Co nanowire networks driven by magnetic field and current, manifested in distinct magnetoresistance (MR) features. In these networks, when only a few interconnected NWs were measured, multiple MR kinks and local minima were observed, including a significant minimum at a positive field during the descending field sweep. Micromagnetic simulations showed that this unusual feature was due to domain wall (DW) pinning at the NW intersections, which was confirmed by off-axis electron holography imaging. In a complex network with many intersections, sequential switching of nanowire sections separated by interconnects was observed, along with stochastic characteristics. The pinning/depinning of the DWs can be further controlled by the driving current density. Magneto-ionics has emerged as a promising approach to manipulate magnetic properties, not only by drastically reducing power consumption associated with electric current based devices but also by enabling novel functionalities. To date, magneto-ionics have been mostly explored in oxygen-based systems, while there is a surge of interests in alternative ionic systems. Here we demonstrate highly effective hydroxide-based magneto-ionics in electrodeposited ${\alpha}$-Co(OH)$_{2}$ films. The ${\alpha}$-Co(OH)$_{2}$, which is a room temperature paramagnet, is switched to ferromagnetic after electrolyte gating with a negative voltage. The system is fully, magnetically reversible upon positive voltage application. The origin of the reversible paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition is attributed to the ionic diffusion of hydroxyl groups, promoting the formation of metallic cobalt ferromagnetic regions. Our findings demonstrate one of the lowest turn-on voltages reported for propylene carbonate gated experiments. By tuning the voltage magnitude and sample area we demonstrate that the speed of the induced ionic effect can be drastically enhanced., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures. Battiston et al. (arXiv:2110.06023) provide a comprehensive overview of how investigations of complex systems should take into account interactions between more than two elements, which can be modelled by hypergraphs and studied via topological data analysis. Following a separate line of enquiry, a broad literature has developed information-theoretic tools to characterize high-order interdependencies from observed data. While these could seem to be competing approaches aiming to address the same question, in this correspondence we clarify that this is not the case, and that a complete account of higher-order phenomena needs to embrace both.

Emergence is a profound subject that straddles many scientific disciplines, including the formation of galaxies and how consciousness arises from the collective activity of neurons. Despite the broad interest that exists on this concept, the study of emergence has suffered from a lack of formalisms that could be used to guide discussions and advance theories. Here we summarise, elaborate on, and extend a recent formal theory of causal emergence based on information decomposition, which is quantifiable and amenable to empirical testing. This theory relates emergence with information about a system's temporal evolution that cannot be obtained from the parts of the system separately. This article provides an accessible but rigorous introduction to the framework, discussing the merits of the approach in various scenarios of interest. Magneto-ionic control of magnetic properties through ionic migration has shown promise in enabling new functionalities in energy-efficient spintronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate the effect of helium ion irradiation and oxygen implantation on magneto-ionically induced exchange bias effect in Gd/Ni$_{0.33}$Co$_{0.67}$O heterostructures. Irradiation using $He^+$ leads to an expansion of the Ni$_{0.33}$Co$_{0.67}$O lattice due to strain relaxation. At low He+ fluence ($\leq$ 2$\times$10$^{14}$ ions cm$^{-2}$), the redox-induced interfacial magnetic moment initially increases, owing to enhanced oxygen migration. At higher fluence, the exchange bias is suppressed due to reduction of pinned uncompensated interfacial Ni$_{0.33}$Co$_{0.67}$O spins. For oxygen implanted samples, an initial lattice expansion below a dose of 5$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$ is subsequently dominated at higher dose by a lattice contraction and phase segregation into NiO and CoO-rich phases, which in turn alters the exchange bias. Electrically induced ionic motion offers a new way to realize voltage-controlled magnetism, opening the door to a new generation of logic, sensor, and data storage technologies. Here, we demonstrate an effective approach to magneto-ionically and electrically tune exchange bias in Gd/Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films (x=0.50, 0.67), where neither of the layers alone is ferromagnetic at room temperature. The Gd capping layer deposited onto antiferromagnetic Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O initiates a solid-state redox reaction that reduces an interfacial region of the oxide to ferromagnetic NiCo. Exchange bias is established after field cooling, which can be enhanced by up to 35% after a voltage conditioning and subsequently reset with a second field cooling. These effects are caused by the presence of an interfacial ferromagnetic NiCo layer, which further alloys with the Gd layer upon field cooling and voltage application, as confirmed by electron microscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry studies. Near Ambient Pressure Scanning Photoelectron Microscopy adds to the widely used photoemission spectroscopy and its chemically selective capability two key features: (i) the possibility to chemically analyse samples in a more realistic environmental, gas pressure condition, and (ii) the capability to investigate a system at the relevant spatial scale. To achieve these goals the approach developed at the ESCA Microscopy beamline at the Elettra Synchrotron facility combines the submicron lateral resolution of a Scanning Photoelectron Microscope with a custom designed Near Ambient Pressure Cell where a gas pressure up to 0.1 mbar is confined inside it around the sample. In this manuscript a review of experiments performed with this unique setup will be presented to illustrate its potentiality in both fundamental and applicative research such as the oxidation reactivity and gas sensitivity of metal oxides and semiconductors. In particular the capability to do operando experiment with this setup opens the possibility to perform investigations with active devices to properly address the real nature of the studied systems, because it can yield to more conclusive results when microscopy and spectroscopy are simultaneously combined in a single technique.

The on-going COVID-19 pandemic highlights the severe health risks posed by deep submicron sized airborne viruses and particulates in the spread of infectious diseases. There is an urgent need for the development of efficient, durable and reusable filters for this size range. Here we report the realization of efficient particulate filters using nanowire-based low-density metal foams which combine extremely large surface areas with excellent mechanical properties. The metal foams exhibit outstanding filtration efficiencies (>96.6%) in the PM_{0.3} regime, with potentials for further improvement. We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Flexible microfluidics have found extensive utility in the biological and biomedical fields. A leading substrate material for compliant devices is polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Despite its many advantages, PDMS is inherently hydrophobic and consequently its use in passive (pumpless) microfluidics becomes problematic. To this end, many physical and chemical modifications have been introduced to render PDMS hydrophilic, ranging from amphiphilic molecule additions to surface plasma treatments. However, when transitioning from lab benchtop to realized medical devices, these modifications must exhibit long-term stability. Unfortunately, these modifications are often presented but their mechanisms and long-term stability are not studied in detail. We have investigated an array of PDMS modifications, utilizing contact angle goniometry to study surface energy over a 30-day evolution study. Samples were stored in air and water, and Fourier Transform Infrared-Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) analysis was used to confirm surface functional group uniformity. It is a widely accepted fact that state-sponsored Twitter accounts operated during the 2016 US presidential election, spreading millions of tweets with misinformation and inflammatory political content. Whether these social media campaigns of the so-called "troll" accounts were able to manipulate public opinion is still in question. Here, we quantify the influence of troll accounts on Twitter by analyzing 152.5 million tweets (by 9.9 million users) from that period. The data contain original tweets from 822 troll accounts identified as such by Twitter itself. We construct and analyse a very large interaction graph of 9.3 million nodes and 169.9 million edges using graph analysis techniques, along with a game-theoretic centrality measure. Then, we quantify the influence of all Twitter accounts on the overall information exchange as is defined by the retweet cascades. We provide a global influence ranking of all Twitter accounts and we find that one troll account appears in the top-100 and four in the top-1000. This combined with other findings presented in this paper constitute evidence that the driving force of virality and influence in the network came from regular users - users who have not been classified as trolls by Twitter. On the other hand, we find that on average, troll accounts were tens of times more influential than regular users were. Moreover, 23% and 22% of regular accounts in the top-100 and top-1000 respectively, have now been suspended by Twitter. The broad concept of emergence is instrumental in various of the most challenging open scientific questions -- yet, few quantitative theories of what constitutes emergent phenomena have been proposed. This article introduces a formal theory of causal emergence in multivariate systems, which studies the relationship between the dynamics of parts of a system and macroscopic features of interest. Our theory provides a quantitative definition of downward causation, and introduces a complementary modality of emergent behaviour -- which we refer to as causal decoupling. Moreover, the theory allows practical criteria that can be efficiently calculated in large systems, making our framework applicable in a range of scenarios of practical interest. We illustrate our findings in a number of case studies, including Conway's Game of Life, Reynolds' flocking model, and neural activity as measured by electrocorticography., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

So far, magneto-ionics, understood as voltage-driven ion transport in magnetic materials, has largely relied on controlled migration of oxygen ion/vacancy and, to a lesser extent, lithium and hydrogen. Here, we demonstrate efficient, room-temperature, voltage-driven nitrogen transport (i.e., nitrogen magneto-ionics) by electrolyte-gating of a single CoN film (without an ion-reservoir layer). Nitrogen magneto-ionics in CoN is compared to oxygen magneto-ionics in Co3O4, both layers showing a nanocrystalline face-centered-cubic structure and reversible voltage-driven ON-OFF ferromagnetism. In contrast to oxygen, nitrogen transport occurs uniformly creating a plane-wave-like migration front, without assistance of diffusion channels. Nitrogen magneto-ionics requires lower threshold voltages and exhibits enhanced rates and cyclability. This is due to the lower activation energy for ion diffusion and the lower electronegativity of nitrogen compared to oxygen. We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press
