Abstract

The K$\beta$ transition in muonic hydrogen was measured with a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. The spectrum is shown to be sensitive to the ground-state hyperfine splitting, the corresponding triplet-to-singlet ratio, and the kinetic energy distribution in the $3p$ state. The hyperfine splitting and triplet-to-singlet ratio are found to be consistent with the values expected from theoretical and experimental investigations and, therefore, were fixed accordingly in order to reduce the uncertainties in the further reconstruction of the kinetic energy distribution. The presence of high-energetic components was established and quantified in both a phenomenological, i.e. cascade-model-free fit, and in a direct deconvolution of the Doppler broadening based on the Bayesian approach., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures

The atomic cascade in $\mu^- p$ and $\pi^- p$ atoms has been studied with the improved version of the extended cascade model in which new quantum mechanical calculations of the differential and integral cross sections of the elastic scattering, Stark transitions and Coulomb de-excitation have been included for the principal quantum number values $n\le 8$ and the relative energies $E \ge 0.01$ eV. Abstract

The deexcitation of exotic hydrogen atoms in highly excited states in collisions with hydrogen molecules has been studied using the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method. The Coulomb transitions with large change of principal quantum number n have been found to be the dominant collisional deexcitation mechanism at high n. The molecular structure of the hydrogen target is shown to be essential for the dominance of transitions with large \Delta n. The external Auger effect has been studied in the eikonal approximation. The resulting partial wave cross-sections are consistent with unitarity and provide a more reliable input for cascade calculations than the previously used Born approximation., Comment: 10 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

The atomic cascades in mu-p and pbar-p atoms have been studied in detail using new results for the cross-sections of the scattering of highly excited exotic atoms from molecular hydrogen. The cascade calculations have been done with an updated version of the extended standard cascade model that computes the evolution in the kinetic energy from the beginning of the cascade. Abstract

The differential and total cross sections for the scattering of muonic, pionic, kaonic and antiprotonic hydrogen in excited states from atomic hydrogen have been calculated for the purpose of atomic cascade calculations. The scattering problem is treated in a fully quantum mechanical framework which takes the energy shifts and, in the case of the hadronic atoms, the widths of the ns states into account. Abstract

We have calculated differential, total and transport cross sections for muonic hydrogen in the n=2 state scattering from hydrogen. The metastable fraction of the 2S state that slows down below the 2P threshold without undergoing collisional quenching has been calculated as a function of the initial kinetic energy using a Monte Carlo kinetics program. Contrary to earlier estimates, the metastable fraction in the kinetic energy range of 2-5 eV cannot be neglected., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The hadronic shift and width in pionic hydrogen together with the hadronic shift in pionic deuterium constitute a one-fold constraint for the two independent pion-nucleon scattering lengths. Furthermore, the hadronic width in pionic deuterium measures the transition strength of s-wave pions on an isoscalar nucleon-nucleon pair which is an independent quantity not related to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths. The experiment was performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute by stopping a high-intensity low-energy pion beam in gaseous targets using the cyclotron trap. The X-rays emitted by the πH and πD atoms were analysed with a high resolution Bragg spectrometer equipped with spherically bent crystals. The pion-nucleon scattering lengths and other physical quantities extracted from the atom data are in good agreement with the results obtained from pionnucleon and nucleon-nucleon scattering experiments and confirm that a consistent picture is achieved for the low-energy pion-nucleon sector with respect to the expectations of chiral perturbation theory., Published by EDP Sciences, Les Ulis

Abstract

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) posted reports claiming that chiropractic care can impact the immune system. These claims clash with recommendations from the World Health Organization and World Federation of Chiropractic. We discuss the scientific validity of the claims made in these ICA reports.

Abstract

Background Chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH) is a pathology that is frequently encountered by neurosurgeons. Nevertheless, there is a lack of guidelines based on solid evidence. There has been a recent and considerable increase in the interest on management and outcomes for CSDH. Therefore, we systematically reviewed all currently running randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in chronic subdural haematoma to understand the areas under investigation and plan future collaborative trials. Methods Clinical trials databases (Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials, WHO ICTRP and clinical ) were searched for trials relevant to chronic subdural haematoma. It was then established which trials were currently running and fulfilled robust research methodology for a RCT. Results There are 26 currently running RCTs in CSDH, with the most common topics covering application of steroids (7), surgical techniques (5) and tranexamic acid (5). Further to this, there are trials running on other pharmacological agents (4), middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolisation (2) and peri-operative management (3). Conclusions Pharmacological agents are a particular focus of CSDH management currently, and a wealth of studies on steroids will hopefully lead to more harmonised, evidence-based practice regarding this in the near future. Surgical techniques and new procedures such as MMA embolisation are also important focuses for improving patient outcomes. There is an on-going need for future RCTs and evidence-based guidelines in CSDH, particularly including low- and middle-income countries, and it is hoped that the establishment of the iCORIC (International COllaborative Research Initiative on Chronic Subdural Haematoma) will help address this.
