A unique approach to improving student success in Human Anatomy and Physiology can be centered around teaching the students about metacognitive learning strategies. This perspective discusses the implementation of a metacognitive learning strategies session and highlights some of the outcomes that resulted from the session through exam wrapper responses. A one-hour session discussing metacognitive learning strategies was presented for the students through a pre-recorded video with embedded participation questions. Topics included methods for changing student studying habits to be more efficient and to retain a deeper level of understanding of the material. The session was also accompanied by exam wrappers to help the students to apply the concepts from the session.

This narrative study tells the teaching and learning story of the recently retired Dr. Peggy LePage, a longtime member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society with a career as a community college anatomy and biology professor spanning nearly three decades. Drawn from a lengthy narrative interview, this paper describes Dr. LePage's background as a nontraditional student and explores her resilience as a woman in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). When Dr. LePage neared a breaking point early in her career, an encounter with a well-known advocate for active learning in science classrooms transformed her pedagogy. She also became involved with HAPS and never looked back. Narrative passages from her interview emphasize Dr. LePage's persistence in STEM, her shift toward a teacher as learner mentality, and the benefits of learning communities for anatomy and physiology instructors.

Guided inquiry is an active learning technique featuring collaborative group learning with a structured set of models and highly structured questions for students to discuss and answer. Moving this technique to an online delivery format presents challenges, leading to questions about the effectiveness of this technique during online instruction. This study looked at the synchronous online delivery of a sliding filament theory guided inquiry activity (Brown 2015) and scores on related exam questions in anatomy classes at Salt Lake Community College. Students who participated in the guided inquiry activity had a median score of 79% on questions related to the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction while those that did not participate in guided inquiry had a median score of 61%, revealing a medium effect on student test scores. This suggests that the guided inquiry activity was successful at improving student understanding and retention when delivered in the online teaching environment.

Pre-clinical community college students represent a unique population with varied academic backgrounds and levels of preparedness. Addressing the needs of this population is important for issues of access, equity, and diversity in higher education. As part of a larger National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Community College Anatomy and Physiology Education Research (CAPER), this study aimed to investigate the impact of an active learning technique on student anxiety, student collaboration, and final course grades. We introduced a bookend think-pair-share (TPS) active learning technique into a traditional community college human physiology lecture. The study found an increased likelihood of collaboration, a slight increase in final grades, a slight decrease in social anxiety, and a significant decrease in anxiety regarding five of eight specific teaching practices following the bookend TPS intervention.

Evidence Based Instructional Practices (EBIPs) have been shown to increase student engagement in college classrooms. Education research conducted to date on the effectiveness of these EBIPs and their impact on students' has largely focused on four-year and research-intensive institutions, and community colleges represent a significant gap in the literature. The NSF-funded Community College Anatomy and Physiology Education Research (CAPER) project has attempted to narrow that knowledge gap through instruction, mentoring, and research support teams. To date, two cohorts of community college instructors (six participants each year) have participated in an online course on education research, which culminates in the completion of a research proposal. Participants receive coaching and mentorship through the development and implementation of their research projects at their respective institutions. Data collected to date measures the impact that each EBIP has on student anxiety and academic self-efficacy. The purpose of CAPER is not only to gather data on the EBIP implementation and effectiveness in community college classrooms, but also to gather data on long-lasting change in instructional methods used by community college instructors engaging in this research. Through this research, we are contributing to the body of literature that is currently lacking representation of community college populations. In addition, we are identifying tools and resources that may increase the likelihood that community college faculty will engage in student-centered learning techniques in their classrooms.

One strategy to transform the high attrition rates among community college (CC) students is for CC instructors to utilize the teaching practices shown to most likely lead to student success. CC students and faculty are underrepresented in biology education research (BER), with only 3% of BER articles addressing CC-specific issues (Schinske et al. 2017). This study examines whether the addition of an electronic student response system (SRS), and its proposed ability to facilitate group discussion, would enhance the effects of peer instruction on student performance in a community college anatomy and physiology course. Unit exam scores of students utilizing clickers vs. written responses were compared to determine if the addition of clicker technology to peer instruction increased performance. A MANOVA test revealed no significant differentiation in exam scores between groups. This implies that CC students may respond dissimilarly to previously studied students and that more educational research must be done at community colleges.

This article examines the backgrounds and pedagogical evolution of twelve community college (CC) human anatomy and physiology faculty participating in a larger study known as the Community College Anatomy and Physiology Education Research (CAPER) project. Using qualitative analysis of interviews based on Luft & Roehrig's (2007) Teacher Belief Interview (TBI), this article explores how prior experiences influenced CC faculty's teaching beliefs and practices. Results indicated that despite limited access to professional development opportunities, CC faculty drew on their own experiences as learners, teaching experience, and classroom experimentation to reorient their beliefs toward effective science teaching. To better align their new beliefs with their classroom practice, they joined the CAPER project professional development opportunity. Findings reflect patterns identified in Clarke and Hollingsworth's (2002) Interconnected Model of Professional Growth (ICMPG) highlighting the importance of instructors' prior knowledge and intrinsic motivation. Given that community colleges serve a substantial share of higher education students today, this study has important implications for professional development and classroom research opportunities for CC and other higher education faculty.

In this pilot study, students in Anatomy and Physiology courses at a Southwest US Community College were assigned to groups with the instruction that they must meet outside of class time to work on course assignments throughout the semester. The assignments included exam preparation questions and case studies, but the groups could use their out of time class in other ways as well. The aim was to identify student-perceived challenges and benefits associated with out-of-class group study in a population of commuter students. The majority of students reported group participation was beneficial to learning while also noting the challenges in scheduling regular face-to-face meetings, which were often mitigated through technology use. The majority of respondents (70%) commented that they would seek other group study opportunities in their courses. In this qualitative report, we conclude that students perceived group work to be beneficial enough to seek additional group study opportunities in spite of the logistical challenges associated with a commuter population.

The increased prevalence and severity of academic-related distress is of significant concern on college campuses. Of particular relevance to instructors is the anxiety relating to classroom teaching and evaluation practices. Sources of evaluation anxiety include student uncertainty about the nature of the expected demands as well as their ability to meet these demands. This report presents work from a pilot study investigating correlations between evaluation anxiety and perceived evaluation accuracy for different evaluation techniques across four different disciplines. We also examined the potential mediating role of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between anxiety and expected grade. Our results provide insight into methods to reduce anxiety and increase performance. We try to answer the question: "Should instructors focus their efforts on modifying their evaluation tools or increasing academic self-efficacy?"

This paper presents community college (CC) instructors' responses to the Community College Anatomy and Physiology Educational Research (CAPER) project, a professional development program focused on active learning and educational research. We engage with conceptual change theory to better understand why and how CC instructors shifted their perspectives toward active learning. Qualitative data indicate that the participating CC instructors experienced pedagogical discontentment, leading to increased positive beliefs about active learning and educational research. In addition, we find that CC instructors have continued their pursuit of pedagogical change and educational research through communities of practice, which provide positive learning environments.

In a 16-year study involving more than 4,800 students, fewer than 2% of students were caught cheating in introductory science classes. The most common type of cheating was plagiarism in lab reports (50% of incidents), followed by altering exams (41%) and submitting falsified lab data (9%). Cheating occurred among students earning all grades in the course. When the penalties for cheating were ignored, the overall course letter-grade distributions for cheaters and non-cheaters were similar. The results indicate that cheating in introductory science classes is not as prevalent as has often been reported, and that cheating has no clear benefit in terms of percentage grades.

Although prescribed standards for science education are the basis for educational reform in virtually all states in the United States, these standards are often problematic. Indeed, an emphasis on prescribed standards often (1) frustrates and inhibits good teachers, (2) marginalizes many at-risk students, (3) produces curricula that ignore fundamental ideas in science (e.g., many states' standards do not mention the word "evolution"), and (4) do not enhance teaching and learning. It is teachers, not prescribed standards, who are the most important ingredient of science education.

Muddiest point and peer instruction are evidence-based instructional practices that can be used to address student learning gaps. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of modality (face to face or online) on student perceptions of the effectiveness of combined muddiest point and peer instruction activities in community college anatomy and physiology courses. Data was collected through end of course surveys and included quantitative and qualitative results. While there was no significant difference in student perception of anxiety or contribution to learning among face-to-face and online students, anxiety levels were low and contribution to learning was high for both groups. Both groups generally provided positive qualitative responses, but online students were more likely to provide positive feedback on muddiest point and peer instruction activities than face-to-face students. Negative responses tended to focus on wanting to work alone and dissatisfaction with classmates' contributions. While there has been a recent focus on developing programs to support educational research by community college anatomy and physiology instructors, there is not yet an established long-term community of practice (CoPs) in this particular area. Studies of long-term CoPs, particularly in STEM education, are few and far between. This study examines College in the Schools (CIS), a long-term community of practice for high school anatomy and physiology (A&P) educators in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In addition, this study highlights the factors that attract high school A&P teachers to CIS and the possibility of creating a similar CoP for community college (CC) A&P instructors focused on educational research. It was discovered that despite their varying reasons for joining, members of CIS and CC instructors tend to participate in CoPs similarly. As a result, A&P instructors from CC who are interested in educational research could benefit from a CoP structure similar to CIS over a longer period of time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the results of a study that investigated the experiences of a group of high school anatomy and physiology teachers who participated in a cadaver dissection laboratory workshop organized through a university-school partnership. Teacher feedback was collected before, during, and after the workshop through pre-arrival surveys, open-ended written responses to questions during the experience, focus group interviews with teachers, and follow-up surveys and meetings. Two evaluation specialists also attended and engaged in participant observation during the dissection experience. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, data were analyzed and coded for emergent themes. These findings are presented along with first-person narrative description of the experience from teachers' perspectives. This article contextualizes this initiative relative to hands-on learning of anatomy and physiology, secondary science teacher professional development, and instructional improvement. Results of this study support the positive impact of such experiences on instructor content understanding and outcomes for classroom practice. Specific changes to teacher behavior and dissection instruction following the workshop and ongoing professional development efforts are reported.

Despite widespread calls for reform in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, effecting lasting change in instructor practice is challenging to achieve. This article describes the results of a 2-yr research study that involved efforts to develop the pedagogical expertise of a group of anatomy and physiology instructors at the college level. Data were collected through a series of individual interviews that included the use of the Teacher Beliefs Inventory questionnaire (23) along with observations onsite in participants' college classrooms and at process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) curriculum writing workshops. Findings indicated attitudinal shifts on the part of participants from teacher-centered to more student-centered pedagogy and supported the benefits of long-term professional development for instructors. Here, we documented the successful progress of these professors as they participated in a curriculum development process that emphasized student-centered teaching with the goal of promoting broader change efforts in introductory anatomy and physiology.

This article describes a one-semester anatomy and physiology course that is currently offered through the concurrent enrollment program at the University of Minnesota. The article explains how high school teachers are prepared to teach the course and describes efforts to promote program quality, student inquiry, and experiential learning. Recommendations are made for anatomy and physiology instructors who are involved in similar endeavors. (Contains 6 figures and 3 tables.)

Students in an interdisciplinary undergraduate introductory course were required to complete a group video project focused on nutrition and healthy eating. A mixed-methods approach to data collection involved observing and rating video footage of group work sessions and individual and focus group interviews. These data were analyzed and used to evaluate the effectiveness of the assignment in light of two student learning outcomes and two student development outcomes at the University of Minnesota. Positive results support the continued inclusion of the project within the course, and recommendthe assignment to other programs as a viable means of promoting both content learning and affective behavioral objectives. Three faculty members from three different professional disciplines outline strategies to engage first-year students in a team-taught, multidisciplinary first-year experience course. The theme of the discussed section is titled food for thought...and action. Assignments are grounded in theories of cooperative and experiential learning. Tentative outcomes and students' reactions are shared. Practical suggestions are included for educators who wish to implement comparable initiatives at their respective institutions.

To generate motivation and promote the development of written communication skills, students in a freshman-level anatomy and physiology course for nonmajors created group webpages describing historically important diseases. After the groups had been formed, each individual was assigned specific components of the disease (e.g., causes or treatments), which were subsequently combined into a final product. Interviews and questionnaires were used to document students' previous educational experiences regarding, and attitudes toward, the project. Students learned more about website design than about anatomy and physiology, but students preferred the assignment over traditional term papers. Although most students could find relevant information for this project on the internet, they were uncritical in judging the accuracy of the information they found. (Contains 1 table.)

This paper describes and evaluates a new type of multiple-choice test question that is relatively easy to construct and that challenges students' understandings of biological concepts. The questions involve a small narrative of scientific text that students must evaluate for accuracy. These are termed "You are the Teacher" questions because the students role-play a teacher correcting a short-answer exam (a form of reciprocal teaching). This type of question can place a higher cognitive demand on a student than a basic knowledge question, but it can still be used within a multiple-choice exam. (Contains 1 figure.)

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are frequently asked to lead discussion groups. These groups generally take the form of tutorials, review sessions, or problem-based learning classes. In their preparation, what to teach is often emphasized over how to teach. The primary intent of this article is to provide a few simple teaching strategies for GTAs, but our ideas are germane to any biology educator.

Instructors used an electronic response system to enhance student-centered learning in large and small college biology classes. The system worked well to engage students in learning the subject matter and to assess their prior knowledge and misconceptions. It provided useful feedback to students as well as instructors. Problems encountered resulted mainly from not having permanent installation of the hardware components in the large class.

Explains that although ethical aspects of science are rarely discussed, they are of interest to the public. Identifies Americans' concerns about science-related issues and how religion influences the issues. (Contains 21 references.) (Author/YDS)

Examined the effects of positive interdependence versus no interdependence on college students' academic achievement. Students took weekly electronic quizzes where they could interact with groupmates in a chat room. Achievement was measured via biweekly examinations. Students in the positive interdependence condition engaged in significantly more interaction and more promotive interaction during the quizzes and achieved higher scores on the examination. (SM)

Argues that retention statistics indicate that developmental students have the best chance for success when they attend four-year institutions. Discusses the data relative to a new and more successful model for developmental education that eliminates stand-alone remedial courses and instead embeds remedial education in core curriculum. Examines the effectiveness of two writing-to-learn formats in helping developmental students master biological information and in decreasing writing anxiety. Objective measures showed a small but significant decrease in writing anxiety over the quarter, unrelated to writing format. Writing format also had little effect on content knowledge, based on responses to test questions. Contains 25 references. (VWC)
