It is well-known and easy to show that even the following version of the directed travelling salesman problem is NP-complete: Given a strongly connected complete digraph $D=(V,A)$, a cost function $w: A\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ and a natural number $K$; decide whether $D$ has a directed Hamiltonian cycle of cost at most $K$. We study the following variant of this problem for $\{0,1\}$-weighted semicomplete digraphs where the set of arcs which have cost 1 form a collection of vertex-disjoint complete digraphs. A digraph is \textbf{semicomplete multipartite} if it can be obtained from a semicomplete digraph $D$ by choosing a collection of vertex-disjoint subsets $X_1,\ldots{},X_c$ of $V(D)$ and then deleting all arcs both of whose end-vertices lie inside some $X_i$. Let $D$ be a semicomplete digraph with a cost function $w$ as above, where $w(a)=1$ precisely when $a$ is an arc inside one of the subsets $X_1,\ldots{},X_c$ and let $D^*$ be the corresponding \smd{} that we obtain by deleting all arcs inside the $X_i$'s. Then every cycle $C$ of $D$ corresponds to a {\bf generalized cycle} $C^g$ of $D^*$ which is either the cycle $C$ itself if $w(C)=0$ or a collection of two or more paths that we obtain by deleting all arcs of cost 1 on $C$. Similarly we can define a {\bf generalized path} $P^g$ in a semicomplete multipartite digraph. The purpose of this paper is to study structural and algorithmic properties of generalized paths and cycles in semicomplete multipartite digraphs. This allows us to identify classes of directed $\{0,1\}$-weighted TSP instances that can be solved in polynomial time as well as others for which we can get very close to the optimum in polynomial time. Along with these results we also show that two natural questions about properties of cycles meeting all partite sets in semicomplete multipartite digraphs are NP-complete.

The support of a flow $x$ in a network is the subdigraph induced by the arcs $uv$ for which $x(uv)>0$. We discuss a number of results on flows in networks where we put certain restrictions on structure of the support of the flow. Many of these problems are NP-hard because they generalize linkage problems for digraphs. For example deciding whether a network ${\cal N}=(D,s,t,c)$ has a maximum flow $x$ such that the maximum out-degree of the support $D_x$ of $x$ is at most 2 is NP-complete as it contains the 2-linkage problem as a very special case. Another problem which is NP-complete for the same reason is that of computing the maximum flow we can send from $s$ to $t$ along $p$ paths (called a maximum {\bf $p$-path-flow}) in ${\cal N}$. Baier et al. (2005) gave a polynomial time algorithm which finds a $p$-path-flow $x$ whose value is at least $\frac{2}{3}$ of the value of a optimum $p$-path-flow when $p\in \{2,3\}$, and at least $\frac{1}{2}$ when $p\geq 4$. When $p=2$, they show that this is best possible unless P=NP. We show for each $p\geq 2$ that the value of a maximum $p$-path-flow cannot be approximated by any ratio larger than $\frac{9}{11}$, unless P=NP. We also consider a variant of the problem where the $p$ paths must be disjoint. For this problem, we give an algorithm which gets within a factor $\frac{1}{H(p)}$ of the optimum solution, where $H(p)$ is the $p$'th harmonic number ($H(p) \sim \ln(p)$). We show that in the case where the network is acyclic, we can find such a maximum $p$-path-flow in polynomial time for every $p$. We determine the complexity of a number of related problems concerning the structure of flows. For the special case of acyclic digraphs, some of the results we obtain are in some sense best possible., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures

By a well known theorem of Robbins, a graph $G$ has a strongly connected orientation if and only if $G$ is 2-edge-connected and it is easy to find, in linear time, either a cut edge of $G$ or a strong orientation of $G$. A result of Durand de Gevigny shows that for every $k\geq 3$ it is NP-hard to decide if a given graph $G$ has a $k$-strong orientation. Thomassen showed that one can check in polynomial time whether a given graph has a 2-strong orientation. This implies that for a given digraph $D$ we can determine in polynomial time whether we can reorient (=reverse) some arcs of $D=(V,A)$ to obtain a 2-strong digraph $D'=(V,A')$. This naturally leads to the question of determining the minimum number of such arcs to reverse before the resulting graph is 2-strong. In this paper we show that finding this number is NP-hard. If a 2-connected graph $G$ has no 2-strong orientation, we may ask how many of its edges we may orient so that the resulting mixed graph is still 2-strong. Similarly, we may ask for a 2-edge-connected graph $G$ how many of its edges we can orient such that the resulting mixed graph remains 2-arc-strong. We prove that when restricted to graphs satisfying suitable connectivity conditions, both of these problems are equivalent to finding the minimum number of edges we must double in a 2-edge-connected graph in order to obtain a 4-edge-connected graph. Using this, we show that all these three problems are NP-hard. Finally, we consider the operation of deorienting an arc $uv$ of a digraph $D$ meaning replacing it by an undirected edge between the same vertices. In terms of connectivity properties, this is equivalent to adding the opposite arc $vu$ to $D$. We prove that for every $\ell\geq 3$ it is NP-hard to find the minimum number of arcs to deorient in a digraph $D$ in order to obtain an $\ell$-strong digraph $D'$.

A digraph $D$ is $k$-linked if it satisfies that for every choice of disjoint sets $\{x_1,\ldots{},x_k\}$ and $\{y_1,\ldots{},y_k\}$ of vertices of $D$ there are vertex disjoint paths $P_1,\ldots{},P_k$ such that $P_i$ is an $(x_i,y_i)$-path. Confirming a conjecture by K\"uhn et al, Pokrovskiy proved in 2015 that every $452k$-strong tournament is $k$-linked and asked for a better linear bound. Very recently Meng et al proved that every $(40k-31)$-strong tournament is $k$-linked. In this note we use an important lemma from their paper to give a short proof that every $(13k-6)$-strong tournament of minimum out-degree at least $28k-13$ is $k$-linked.

Let $D$ be an oriented graph. The inversion of a set $X$ of vertices in $D$ consists in reversing the direction of all arcs with both ends in $X$. The inversion number of $D$, denoted by ${\rm inv}(D)$, is the minimum number of inversions needed to make $D$ acyclic. Denoting by $\tau(D)$, $\tau' (D)$, and $\nu(D)$ the cycle transversal number, the cycle arc-transversal number and the cycle packing number of $D$ respectively, one shows that ${\rm inv}(D) \leq \tau' (D)$, ${\rm inv}(D) \leq 2\tau(D)$ and there exists a function $g$ such that ${\rm inv}(D)\leq g(\nu(D))$. We conjecture that for any two oriented graphs $L$ and $R$, ${\rm inv}(L\rightarrow R) ={\rm inv}(L) +{\rm inv}(R)$ where $L\rightarrow R$ is the dijoin of $L$ and $R$. This would imply that the first two inequalities are tight. We prove this conjecture when ${\rm inv}(L)\leq 1$ and ${\rm inv}(R)\leq 2$ and when ${\rm inv}(L) ={\rm inv}(R)=2$ and $L$ and $R$ are strongly connected. We also show that the function $g$ of the third inequality satisfies $g(1)\leq 4$. We then consider the complexity of deciding whether ${\rm inv}(D)\leq k$ for a given oriented graph $D$. We show that it is NP-complete for $k=1$, which together with the above conjecture would imply that it is NP-complete for every $k$. This contrasts with a result of Belkhechine et al. which states that deciding whether ${\rm inv}(T)\leq k$ for a given tournament $T$ is polynomial-time solvable.

Let $D$ be a digraph, let $p \geq 1$ be an integer, and let $f: V(D) \to \mathbb{N}_0^p$ be a vector function with $f=(f_1,f_2,\ldots,f_p)$. We say that $D$ has an $f$-partition if there is a partition $(D_1,D_2,\ldots,D_p)$ into induced subdigraphs of $D$ such that for all $i \in [1,p]$, the digraph $D_i$ is weakly $f_i$-degenerate, that is, in every non-empty subdigraph $D'$ of $D_i$ there is a vertex $v$ such that $\min\{d_{D'}^+(v), d_{D'}^-(v)\} < f_i(v)$. In this paper, we prove that the condition $f_1(v) + f_2(v) + \ldots + f_p(v) \geq \max \{d_D^+(v),d_D^-(v)\}$ for all $v \in V(D)$ is almost sufficient for the existence of an $f$-partition and give a full characterization of the bad pairs $(D,f)$. Moreover, we describe a polynomial time algorithm that (under the previous conditions) either verifies that $(D,f)$ is a bad pair or finds an $f$-partition. Among other applications, this leads to a generalization of Brooks' Theorem as well as the list-version of Brooks' Theorem for digraphs, where a coloring of digraph is a partition of the digraph into acyclic induced subdigraphs. We furthermore obtain a result bounding the $s$-degenerate chromatic number of a digraph in terms of the maximum of maximum in-degree and maximum out-degree.

A 2-edge-coloured graph $G$ is {\bf supereulerian} if $G$ contains a spanning closed trail in which the edges alternate in colours. An {\bf eulerian factor} of a 2-edge-coloured graph is a collection of vertex disjoint induced subgraphs which cover all the vertices of $G$ such that each of these subgraphs is supereulerian. We give a polynomial algorithm to test if a 2-edge-coloured graph has an eulerian factor and to produce one when it exists. A 2-edge-coloured graph is {\bf (trail-)colour-connected} if it contains a pair of alternating $(u,v)$-paths ($(u,v)$-trails) whose union is an alternating closed walk for every pair of distinct vertices $u,v$. A 2-edge-coloured graph is {\bf M-closed} if $xz$ is an edge of $G$ whenever some vertex $u$ is joined to both $x$ and $z$ by edges of the same colour. M-closed 2-edge-coloured graphs, introduced in \cite{balbuenaDMTCS21}, form a rich generalization of 2-edge-coloured complete graphs. We show that if $G$ is an extension of an M-closed 2-edge-coloured complete graph, then $G$ is supereulerian if and only if $G$ is trail-colour-connected and has an eulerian factor. We also show that for general 2-edge-coloured graphs it is NP-complete to decide whether the graph is supereulerian. Finally we pose a number of open problems.

We give an FPT algorithm for deciding whether the vertex set a digraph $D$ can be partitioned into two disjoint sets $V_1,V_2$ such that the digraph $D[V_1]$ induced by $V_1$ has a vertex that can reach all other vertices by directed paths, the digraph $D[V_2]$ has no vertex of in-degree zero and $|V_i|\geq k_i$, where $k_1,k_2$ are part of the input. This settles an open problem from[1,4].

A non-empty subset $S$ of the vertices of a digraph $D$ is called a {\it safe set} if \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] for every strongly connected component $M$ of $D-S$, there exists a strongly connected component $N$ of $D[S]$ such that there exists an arc from $M$ to $N$; and \item[(ii)] for every strongly connected component $M$ of $D-S$ and every strongly connected component $N$ of $D[S]$, we have $|M|\leq |N|$ whenever there exists an arc from $M$ to $N$. \end{itemize} In the case of acyclic digraphs a set $X$ of vertices is a safe set precisely when $X$ is an {\it in-dominating set}, that is, every vertex not in $X$ has at least one arc to $X$. We prove that, even for acyclic digraphs which are traceable (have a hamiltonian path) it is NP-hard to find a minimum cardinality in-dominating set. Then we show that the problem is also NP-hard for tournaments and give, for every positive constant $c$, a polynomial algorithm for finding a minimum cardinality safe set in a tournament on $n$ vertices in which no strong component has size more than $c\log{}(n)$. Under the so called Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) this is close to best possible in the following sense: If ETH holds, then, for every $\epsilon>0$ there is no polynomial time algorithm for finding a minimum cardinality safe set for the class of tournaments in which the largest strong component has size at most $\log^{1+\epsilon}(n)$. We also discuss bounds on the cardinality of safe sets in tournaments.

The chromatic number $\overrightarrow{\chi}(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices of $D$ such that each color class induces an acyclic subdigraph of $D$. A digraph $D$ is $k$-critical if $\overrightarrow{\chi}(D) = k$ but $\overrightarrow{\chi}(D') < k$ for all proper subdigraphs $D'$ of $D$. We examine methods for creating infinite families of critical digraphs, the Dirac join and the directed and bidirected Haj\'os join. We prove that a digraph $D$ has chromatic number at least $k$ if and only if it contains a subdigraph that can be obtained from bidirected complete graphs on $k$ vertices by (directed) Haj\'os joins and identifying non-adjacent vertices. Building upon that, we show that a digraph $D$ has chromatic number at least $k$ if and only if it can be constructed from bidirected $K_k$'s by using directed and bidirected Haj\'os joins and identifying non-adjacent vertices (so called Ore joins), thereby transferring a well-known result of Urquhart to digraphs. Finally, we prove a Gallai-type theorem that characterizes the structure of the low vertex subdigraph of a critical digraph, that is, the subdigraph, which is induced by the vertices that have in-degree $k-1$ and out-degree $k-1$ in $D$.

A digraph is {\bf eulerian} if it is connected and every vertex has its in-degree equal to its out-degree. Having a spanning eulerian subdigraph is thus a weakening of having a hamiltonian cycle. A digraph is {\bf semicomplete} if it has no pair of non-adjacent vertices. A {\bf tournament} is a semicomplete digraph without directed cycles of length 2. Fraise and Thomassen \cite{fraisseGC3} proved that every $(k+1)$-strong tournament has a hamiltonian cycle which avoids any prescribed set of $k$ arcs. In \cite{bangsupereuler} the authors demonstrated that a number of results concerning vertex-connectivity and hamiltonian cycles in tournaments and have analogues when we replace vertex connectivity by arc-connectivity and hamiltonian cycles by spanning eulerian subdigraphs. They showed the existence of a smallest function $f(k)$ such that every $f(k)$-arc-strong semicomplete digraph has a spanning eulerian subdigraph which avoids any prescribed set of $k$ arcs. They proved that $f(k)\leq \frac{(k+1)^2}{4}+1$ and also proved that $f(k)=k+1$ when $k=2,3$. Based on this they conjectured that $f(k)=k+1$ for all $k\geq 0$. In this paper we prove that $f(k)\leq (\lceil\frac{6k+1}{5}\rceil)$.

The {\sc weak 2-linkage} problem for digraphs asks for a given digraph and vertices $s_1,s_2,t_1,t_2$ whether $D$ contains a pair of arc-disjoint paths $P_1,P_2$ such that $P_i$ is an $(s_i,t_i)$-path. This problem is NP-complete for general digraphs but polynomially solvable for acyclic digraphs \cite{fortuneTCS10}. Recently it was shown \cite{bercziESA17} that if $D$ is equipped with a weight function $w$ on the arcs which satisfies that all edges have positive weight, then there is a polynomial algorithm for the variant of the weak-2-linkage problem when both paths have to be shortest paths in $D$. In this paper we consider the unit weight case and prove that for every pair constants $k_1,k_2$, there is a polynomial algorithm which decides whether the input digraph $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint paths $P_1,P_2$ such that $P_i$ is an $(s_i,t_i)$-path and the length of $P_i$ is no more than $d(s_i,t_i)+k_i$, for $i=1,2$, where $d(s_i,t_i)$ denotes the length of the shortest $(s_i,t_i)$-path. We prove that, unless the exponential time hypothesis (ETH) fails, there is no polynomial algorithm for deciding the existence of a solution $P_1,P_2$ to the {\sc weak 2-linkage} problem where each path $P_i$ has length at most $d(s_i,t_i)+ c\log^{1+\epsilon}{}n$ for some constant $c$. We also prove that the {\sc weak 2-linkage} problem remains NP-complete if we require one of the two paths to be a shortest path while the other path has no restriction on the length.

This paper studies the problem of proper-walk connection number: given an undirected connected graph, our aim is to colour its edges with as few colours as possible so that there exists a properly coloured walk between every pair of vertices of the graph i.e. a walk that does not use consecutively two edges of the same colour. The problem was already solved on several classes of graphs but still open in the general case. We establish that the problem can always be solved in polynomial time in the size of the graph and we provide a characterization of the graphs that can be properly connected with $k$ colours for every possible value of $k$., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

A digraph is eulerian if it is connected and every vertex has its in-degree equal to its out-degree. Having a spanning eulerian subdigraph is thus a weakening of having a hamiltonian cycle. In this paper, we first characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdigraph containing $a$. In particular, we show that if $D$ is $2$-arc-strong, then every arc is contained in a spanning eulerian subdigraph. We then characterize the pairs $(D,a)$ of a semicomplete digraph $D$ and an arc $a$ such that $D$ has a spanning eulerian subdigraph avoiding $a$. In particular, we prove that every $2$-arc-strong semicomplete digraph has a spanning eulerian subdigraph avoiding any prescribed arc. We also prove the existence of a (minimum) function $f(k)$ such that every $f(k)$-arc-strong semicomplete digraph contains a spanning eulerian subdigraph avoiding any prescribed set of $k$ arcs: we prove $f(k)\leq (k+1)^2/4 +1$, conjecture $f(k)=k+1$ and establish this conjecture for $k\leq 3$ and when the $k$ arcs that we delete form a forest of stars. A digraph $D$ is eulerian-connected if for any two distinct vertices $x,y$, the digraph $D$ has a spanning $(x,y)$-trail. We prove that every $2$-arc-strong semicomplete digraph is eulerian-connected. All our results may be seen as arc analogues of well-known results on hamiltonian cycles in semicomplete digraphs.

DP-coloring is a relatively new coloring concept by Dvo\v{r}\'ak and Postle and was introduced as an extension of list-colorings of (undirected) graphs. It transforms the problem of finding a list-coloring of a given graph $G$ with a list-assignment $L$ to finding an independent transversal in an auxiliary graph with vertex set $\{(v,c) ~|~ v \in V(G), c \in L(v)\}$. In this paper, we extend the definition of DP-colorings to digraphs using the approach from Neumann-Lara where a coloring of a digraph is a coloring of the vertices such that the digraph does not contain any monochromatic directed cycle. Furthermore, we prove a Brooks' type theorem regarding the DP-chromatic number, which extends various results on the (list-)chromatic number of digraphs., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures
