Abstract We compare the performance of photovoltaic (PV), flat-plate and evacuated-tube solar-thermal (ST), and hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) collectors to meet the energy demands of multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination plants across four locations. We consider three scales: 1700 m3day−1, 120 m3day−1 and 3 m3day−1. We find a strong dependence of the capacity and configuration of the solar collectors on both the cost of sourcing electricity from the grid and the specific collector employed. We find specific costs as low as 7.8, 3.4 and 3.7 USDm−3 for the three plant capacities. We find that solar-driven systems optimised for the lowest specific cost result in CO2eq emissions equal to, or higher than, those from grid-driven reverse osmosis (RO) and in line with PV-RO. This highlights the need to consider the environmental footprint of these systems to ensure that desalination is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6.

Abstract Off-grid photovoltaic systems have been proposed as a panacea for economies with poor electricity access, offering a lower-cost “leapfrog” over grid infrastructure used in higher-income economies. Previous research examining pathways to electricity access may understate the role of off-grid photovoltaics as it has not considered reliability and carbon pricing impacts. We perform high-resolution geospatial analysis on universal household electricity access in Sub-Saharan Africa that includes these aspects via least-cost pathways at different electricity demand levels. Under our “Tier 3" demand reference scenario, 24% of our study’s 470 million people obtaining electricity access by 2030 do so via off-grid photovoltaics. Including a unit cost for unmet demand of 0.50 US dollars ($)/kWh, to penalise poor system reliability increases this share to 41%. Applying a carbon price (around $80/tonne CO2-eq) increases it to 38%. Our results indicate considerable diversity in the level of policy intervention needed between countries and suggest several regions where lower levels of policy intervention may be effective.

Abstract Four glycolated polythiophene‐based organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs), PE2gTT, PE2gT, PT2gTT, and PT2gT are prepared by atom‐efficient direct arylation polymerization, avoiding the need for toxic organometallic precursors. PE2gT, PT2gTT, and PT2gT are operable in p‐type accumulation mode organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), with PT2gT displaying the best device performance with a µC* product figure‐of‐merit of 290 F cm−1 V−1 s−1. A record volumetric capacitance among p‐type glycolated polythiophene OMIECs of 313 F cm−3 is observed for PE2gT, ascribed to the high proportionality of polar components in its materials design. The good OECT performance of PE2gT with µC* = 84.2 F cm−1 V−1 s−1, comparable with state‐of‐the‐art poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) devices, coupled with its synthetic accessibility and favorable accumulation mode operation makes PE2gT an ideal glycolated alternative to PEDOT:PSS in bioelectronics. PE2gT with the least negative threshold voltage also displays the best OECT operational cycling stability, linked to better resistance of its oxidized state against parasitic redox side reactions . Shelf life stability of OECTs stored (without bias) is observed to be better for materials with a more negative threshold voltage and higher average molecular weight (PT2gT), that are less susceptible to ambient auto‐oxidation and film delamination.

Abstract The growing urban transport sector presents towns and cities with an escalating challenge in the reduction of their greenhouse gas emissions. Here we assess the effectiveness of several widely considered policy options (electrification, light-weighting, retrofitting, scrapping, regulated manufacturing standards and modal shift) in achieving the transition to sustainable urban mobility in terms of their emissions and energy impact until 2050. Our analysis investigates the severity of actions needed to comply with Paris compliant regional sub-sectoral carbon budgets. We introduce the Urban Transport Policy Model (UTPM) for passenger car fleets and use London as an urban case study to show that current policies are insufficient to meet climate targets. We conclude that, as well as implementation of emission-reducing changes in vehicle design, a rapid and large-scale reduction in car use is necessary to meet stringent carbon budgets and avoid high energy demand. Yet, without increased consensus in sub-national and sectoral carbon budgets, the scale of reduction necessary stays uncertain. Nevertheless, it is certain we need to act urgently and intensively across all policy mechanisms available as well as developing new policy options.

Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfill ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO _2 eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TW _p in 2021 to 8.5 TW _p by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the PVs community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other.

Abstract Cell culture media design is perhaps the most significant hurdle currently facing the commercialization of cultivated meat as an alternative source of dietary protein. Since media optimization for a specific culture system requires a significant amount of effort and investment, a major question remaining is whether media formulations can be easily shared across multiple production schemes for cells of different species and lineages. Here, we perform spent medium analysis to compare the specific nutrient utilization of primary embryonic chicken muscle precursor cells and fibroblasts to the murine C2C12 myoblast cell line. We demonstrate that these related cell types have significantly different nutrient utilization patterns collectively and on a per-cell basis, and that many components of conventional media do not appear to be depleted by the cells. Namely, glucose was not consumed as rapidly nor as completely by the chicken muscle precursors compared to other cells overall, and there were significant differences in specific consumption rates for several other key nutrients over the first day of culture. Ultimately, our results indicate that no one medium is likely ideal and cost effective to culture multiple cell types and that novel methods to streamline media optimization efforts will be important for the industry to develop.

Ultrafast action spectroscopies of organic optoelectronic devices reveal that the formation of bound exciton state occurs as fast as 10 fs. Excitons having excess energy can dissociate spontaneously within 50-fs before acquiring bound character.

The short- and long-term impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) in consumer products are not fully understood. Current European Union (EU) regulations enforce transparency on products containing NPs in cosmetic formulations; however, those set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are lacking. This study demonstrates the potential of single-particle inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (spICP-MS/MS) as a screening method for NPs present in powder-based facial cosmetics (herein referred to as FCs). A proposed spICP-MS/MS method is presented along with recommended criteria to confirm particle presence and particle detection thresholds in seven FCs. FC products of varying colors, market values, and applications were analyzed for the presence of Bi, Cr, Mg, Mn, Pb, Sn, Ag, Al, and Zn NPs based on their ingredient lists as well as those commonly used in cosmetic formulations. The presence of NPs smaller than 100 nm was observed in all FC samples, and no correlations with their presence and market value were observed. Here, we report qualitative and semi-quantitative results for seven FC samples ranging in color, brand, and shimmer.

Charge transfer state provides insight into energy loss in organic photovoltaics, which is dictated by molecular vibrations and static disorder. Here, the authors propose a method for exploring the effect of donor/acceptor interface microstructure on charge transfer state characteristics and device performance.

Summary: The strong but narrow-bandwidth absorption spectra of organic semiconductors make them excellent candidates for semi-transparent solar cell applications in which color specificity is important. In this study, using a hybrid heterojunction combining the transparent inorganic semiconductor copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) with organic semiconductors (C70, PC70BM, C60, ITIC, IT-4F, or Y6), we show that simple color-tunable solar cells can be fabricated in which the transmission spectrum is determined solely by choice of the organic semiconductor. Using a joint electrical-optical model, we show that it is possible to combine the unique attributes of high photovoltage and color tunability to use these heterojunctions as photovoltaic windows in tandem photoelectrochemical (PEC)-photovoltaic (PV) cells. We demonstrate that this configuration can lead to a reduction in the parasitic absorption losses in the PEC-PV cells and, thus, to solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies (>3%) that are higher than that predicted using the traditionally used architecture in which the PV is placed behind the PEC.

Renewables-based mini-grids have the potential to improve electricity access with lower emissions and better reliability than national grids. However, these systems have a challenging cost to revenue ratio, hindering their implementation. Combining residential loads with an anchor load, a relatively large non-domestic user, can help to improve mini-grid economics. Using measured electricity demand data from India and energy modelling, we assess the cost and emissions advantages of integrating health clinics as anchor loads within domestic solar mini-grids. For comparison, we also assess the ability of the national grid to meet our demand scenarios using monitored grid data. We apply a scenario-based approach, using separate domestic and anchor load demand profiles, and both in combination; we test meeting two levels of energy demand, 95% and 100%; and compare systems using PV and batteries, diesel, and hybrid generation. We find that the national grid has poor availability, at just over 50% at the most comparable monitoring site; and that it would meet a lower fraction of energy demand for our anchor load scenarios than the domestic only ones. For the off-grid systems, we find substantial cost and emissions reductions with anchor loads relative to demand scenarios without anchor loads. At 95% of demand met, we find PV and battery systems are 14-22% cheaper than diesel-only systems, with 10 times lower carbon intensity. Our findings illustrate the role off-grid systems can play in the provision of reliable low-carbon electricity and highlight the advantages of incorporating anchor loads like health centres into such systems.

The realization of organic semiconductors with simultaneous independent control of molecular energy levels and Fermi level remains a challenge. Here, the authors combine band structure engineering and molecular doping to independently tune the energy and Fermi levels in ternary organic blends.

Hybrid halide perovskites materials have the potential for both photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. Relatively little has been reported on the kinetics of charge relaxation upon intense excitation. In order to evaluate the illumination power density dependence on the charge recombination mechanism, we have applied a femtosecond transient mid-IR absorption spectroscopy with strong excitation to directly measure the charge kinetics via electron absorption. The irradiance-dependent relaxation processes of the excited, photo-generated charge pairs were quantified in polycrystalline MAPbI3, MAPbBr3, and (FAPbI3)0.97(MAPbBr3)0.03 thin films that contain either methylamonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA). This report identifies the laser-generated charge species and provides the kinetics of Auger, bimolecular and excitonic decay components. The inter-band electron-hole (bimolecular) recombination was found to dominate over Auger recombination at very high pump irradiances, up to the damage threshold. The kinetic analysis further provides direct evidence for the carrier field origin of the vibrational Stark effect in a formamidinium containing perovskite material. The results suggest that radiative excitonic and bimolecular recombination in MAPbI3 at high excitation densities could support light-emitting applications.

Mini-grids are a critical way to meet electricity access goals according to current and projected electricity demand of communities and so appropriately sizing them is essential to ensure their financial viability. However, estimation of demand for communities awaiting electricity access is uncertain and growth in demand along with the associated cost implications is rarely considered during estimation of mini-grid sizing. Using a case study of two rural communities in India, we assess the implications of demand growth on financial costs and performance of a mini-grid system consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage using two different system sizing approaches. We show a cost-saving potential of up to 12% when mini-grids are sized using a multi-stage approach where mini-grids gradually expand in several stages, rather than a single-stage optimisation approach. We perform a sensitivity analysis of the cost of the two sizing approaches by varying six key parameters: demand growth rate, logistics cost, system re-sizing frequency, likelihood of blackouts, solar PV and battery cost, and degradation rate. Of these, we find that system costs are most sensitive to variations in demand growth rates and cost decreases in solar PV and batteries. Our study shows that demand growth scenarios and choice of mini-grid sizing approaches have important financial and operational implications for the design of systems for rural electrification.

While inorganic semiconductors are well-studied for their solar-to-fuel energy conversion abilities, organic materials receive far less attention. Here, authors prepare linear conjugated polymers as H2 evolution photocatalysts and rationalize photocatalytic activities with fundamental properties.

Ion migration has been related to hysteresis in perovskite solar cells, but not all perovskite cells exhibit a hysteresis. Here, Caladoet al. show that ion migration occurs regardless of hysteresis, but photogenerated carriers screen the effects of ionic charge for some solar cell architectures.

The compositional authentication of wine is of great interest, as the geographic origin of the grapes is often associated with quality, uniqueness, and authenticity. Previous elemental fingerprinting studies mainly discriminated wines from different countries or regions within a country. Here, we report the use of element profiles to distinguish commercial Pinot noir wines from five sub-regional appellations or neighborhoods within one American viticultural area (AVA). Fifty-three single cultivar wines were collected over two harvests and analyzed using microwave plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Of 62 monitored elements that were quantified with fully validated methods, 24 and 32 elements differed significantly across the neighborhoods and vintages, respectively (p < 0.05). Targeted canonical variate analysis (CVA) explained 85%-90% of the variance ratio across the two vintages, indicating persistent and stable elemental fingerprints of wines at a sub-regional level. A sixth, newly founded neighborhood was correctly grouped separately from the others using a Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA), indicating the potential of elemental fingerprints for wine authenticity.

The interplay of light absorption, charge-carrier transport, and charge-carrier recombination determines the performance of a photovoltaic absorber material. Here we analyze the influence on the solar-cell efficiency of the absorber material properties absorption coefficient α, charge-carrier mobility μ, and charge-carrier lifetime τ, for different scenarios. We combine analytical calculations with numerical drift-diffusion simulations to understand the relative importance of these three quantities. Whenever charge collection is a limiting factor, the αμτ product is a good figure of merit (FOM) to predict solar-cell efficiency, while for sufficiently high mobilities, the relevant FOM is reduced to the ατ product. We find no fundamental difference between simulations based on monomolecular or bimolecular recombination, but strong surface-recombination affects the maximum efficiency in the high-mobility limit. In the limiting case of high μ and high surface-recombination velocity S, the α/S ratio is the relevant FOM. Subsequently, we apply our findings to organic solar cells which tend to suffer from inefficient charge-carrier collection and whose absorptivity is influenced by interference effects. We estimate that a modest increase in absorption strength by a factor of 1.5 leads to a relative efficiency increase of more than 10% for state-of-the-art organic solar cells.

Twenty-seven commercial Californian Cabernet Sauvignon wines of different quality categories were analyzed with sensory and chemical methods. Correlations between five quality proxies—points awarded during a wine competition, wine expert scores, retail price, vintage, and wine region—were correlated to sensory attributes, volatile compounds, and elemental composition. Wine quality is a multi-faceted construct, incorporating many different layers. Depending on the quality proxy studied, significant correlations between quality and attributes, volatiles and elements were found, some of them previously reported in the literature.

Charge transport in π-conjugated polymers is characterized by a strong degree of disorder in both the energy of conjugated segments and the electronic coupling between adjacent sites. This disorder arises from variations in the structure and conformation of molecular units, as well as the weak intermolecular binding interactions. Although disorder in molecular conformation can be expected to influence the density of states (DOS) distribution—and hence, optoelectronic properties of the material—until now, there has been no direct study of the relationship between a distinct conformational defect and the charge transport properties of a conjugated polymer. Here, we investigate the impact of introducing an extended, planarized chain geometry, known as the “β-phase,” on hole transport through otherwise amorphous films of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO). We show that while β-phase introduces a striking drop of about a hundredfold in time-of-flight (TOF) hole mobility (μ_{h}) at room temperature, it reduces the steady-state μ_{h} measured from hole-only devices by a factor of less than about 5. In order to reconcile these observations, we combine high-dynamic-range TOF photocurrent spectroscopy and energy-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to extract the hole DOS of the conjugated polymer. Both methods show that the effect of the β-phase content is to introduce a sharp sub-bandgap feature into the DOS of glassy PFO lying about 0.3 eV above the highest occupied molecular orbital. The observed energy of the conformational trap is consistent with electronic structure calculations using a tight-binding approach. Using the obtained DOS with a drift-diffusion model capable of resolving charge carriers in both time and energy, we show how the seemingly contradictory transport phenomena obtained via the time-resolved, frequency-resolved, and steady-state methods are reconciled. The results highlight the significance of energetic redistribution of charge carriers in affecting transport behavior. This work demonstrates how charge-carrier mobility in organic semiconductors can be controlled via molecular conformation, and it resolves a long-standing debate over how different (equilibrium versus nonequilibrium) transport techniques reveal electronic properties of disordered solids in a unified manner.

The performance of solar cells based on molecular electronic materials is limited by relatively high nonradiative voltage losses. The primary pathway for nonradiative recombination in organic donor-acceptor heterojunction devices is believed to be the decay of a charge-transfer (CT) excited state to the ground state via energy transfer to vibrational modes. Recently, nonradiative voltage losses have been related to properties of the charge-transfer state such as the Franck-Condon factor describing the overlap of the CT and ground-state vibrational states and, therefore, to the energy of the CT state. However, experimental data do not always follow the trends suggested by the simple model. Here, we extend this recombination model to include other factors that influence the nonradiative decay-rate constant, and therefore the open-circuit voltage, but have not yet been explored in detail. We use the extended model to understand the observed behavior of series of small molecules:fullerene blend devices, where open-circuit voltage appears insensitive to nonradiative loss. The trend could be explained only in terms of a microstructure-dependent CT-state oscillator strength, showing that parameters other than CT-state energy can control nonradiative recombination. We present design rules for improving open-circuit voltage via the control of material parameters and propose a realistic limit to the power-conversion efficiency of organic solar cells.

Wine elemental composition varies by cultivar, geographic origin, viticultural and enological practices, and is often used for authenticity validation. Elemental analysis of wine by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is challenging due to the potential for non-spectral interferences and plasma instability arising from organic matrix components. Sample preparation mitigates these interferences, however, conflicting recommendations of best practices in ICP-MS analysis of wine have been reported. This study compared direct dilution, microwave-assisted acid digestion, and two filtration sample pretreatments, acidification prior to filtration and filtration followed by acidification, in elemental profiling of one white and three red table wines by ICP-MS. Of 43 monitored isotopes, 37 varied by sample preparation method, with significantly higher results of 17 isotopes in the microwave-digested samples. Both filtration treatments resulted in lower results for 11 isotopes compared to the other methods. Finally, isotope dilution determination of copper based on natural abundances and the 63Cu:65Cu instrument response ratio agreed with external calibration and confirmed a significant sample preparation effect. Overall, microwave digestion did not compare favorably, and direct dilution was found to provide the best compromise between ease of use and result accuracy and precision, although all preparation strategies were able to differentiate the wines.

Elemental fingerprints could provide an analytical approach to product differentiation and authentication, and have been used in the past for various distilled spirits, including brandy, gin, bourbon and tequila. However, a comparison of elemental differences between different whisk(e)y types, such as Bourbon and Scotch, is still missing. In this study we compare the elemental fingerprints of 68 commercial whiskies for differentiation by type (Bourbon, Tennessee, Scotch, Irish, Japanese) and region. Concentrations from sub-μg/L to mid-mg/L of 53 different elements were determined with inductively-coupled plasma—mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and microwave plasma—atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES), and used in subsequent statistical analyses. Significant differences in several elements were found for type, and allowed a classification according to whisk(e)y type. Elemental differences were also found for different production areas within Scotland, thus, providing further evidence that Scotch whiskies could be differentiated by elemental analysis. Major sources of elemental differences seem to be processing equipment (Cu, Fe, Ni, Cd, Sn, Mo, V) and raw materials, such as water (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Sr).

In this paper, we provide experimental evidence of the effects of unintentional p-type doping on the performance and the apparent recombination dynamics of bulk-heterojunction solar cells. By supporting these experimental observations with drift-diffusion simulations on two batches of the same efficient polymer-fullerene solar cells with substantially different doping levels and at different thicknesses, we investigate the way the presence of doping affects the interpretation of optoelectronic measurements of recombination and charge transport in organic solar cells. We also present experimental evidence on how unintentional doping can lead to excessively high apparent reaction orders. Our work suggests first that the knowledge of the level of dopants is essential in the studies of recombination dynamics and carrier transport and that unintentional doping levels need to be reduced below approximately 7×10^{15} cm^{−3} for full optimization around the second interference maximum of highly efficient polymer-fullerene solar cells.
