In 2020, many cities closed indoor dining to curb rising COVID-19 cases. While restaurants in warmer climates were able to serve outdoors year-round, restaurants in colder climates adopted various solutions to continually operate throughout the colder months, such as the use of single-party outdoor dining enclosures to allow for the continuation of outdoor dining. This study evaluates indoor air quality and the air exchange rate using carbon dioxide as a tracer gas in a dining enclosure (12.03 m3) and models the probability of COVID-19 infection within such an enclosure. The air exchange rates were determined during two trials for the following scenarios: (1) door closed, (2) door opened, and (3) door opened intermittently every 15 min for 1 min per opening. The probability of COVID-19 infection was evaluated for each of these scenarios for 1 hr, with occupancy levels of two, four, and six patrons. The Wells–Riley equation was used to predict the probability of infection inside the dining enclosure. The air exchange rates were lowest in the closed-door scenarios (0.29–0.59 ACH), higher in the intermittent scenarios (2.36–2.49 ACH), and highest in the open-door scenarios (3.61 to 33.35 ACH). As the number of subjects inside the enclosure increased, the carbon dioxide accumulation increased in the closed-door and intermittent scenarios. There was no identifiable accumulation of carbon dioxide in the open-door scenario. The probability of infection (assuming one infected person without a mask) was inversely proportional to the airflow rate, and ranged from 0.0002–0.84 in the open-door scenario, 0.0034–0.94 for the intermittent scenarios, and 0.015–1.0 for the closed-door scenarios. The results from this study indicate that under typical use, the indoor air quality inside dining enclosures degrades during occupancy. The probability of patrons and workers inside dining enclosures being infected with COVID-19 is high when dining or serving a party with an infected person.

BACKGROUND: Given that patients undergo hysterectomy with the goal of improving different symptoms and concerns, it is important to consider whether sexual function differs prior to and following hysterectomy depending on preoperative surgical indications. Our aims were to describe characteristics of sexual function prior to and six months following benign hysterectomy in patients with three common surgical indications, and to identify preoperative factors that influence the magnitude and direction of change in sexual function after the procedure. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study enrolled women (n=80) undergoing hysterectomy for benign indications at an academic tertiary care center between December 2015 to July 2017. Patients were categorised into three groups according to surgical indication: 1) pelvic pain (PP), 2) abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), and 3) pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Primary outcome was Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), which patients completed preoperatively and six months postoperatively. RESULTS: The study included 80 patients, of whom 25.0% (n=20) had surgical indication of PP, 46.3% (n=37) of AUB, and 28.7% (n=23) of POP. PP patients experienced a significant improvement in overall sexual function, as well as orgasm and pain domains following hysterectomy. Fibromyalgia (FM) is a difficult to treat chronic pain condition for which there is strong interest in alternative treatments. There is growing interest in the potential of psychedelic substances (e.g., psilocybin) in conjunction with psychotherapy to treat chronic pain. Via a cross-sectional, anonymous, online survey, we aimed to characterize knowledge, perceptions, and past use of serotonergic ("classic") and non-serotonergic psychedelics among a population of individuals with FM, and to investigate interest in psychedelic-based FM treatments. Among a North American population of 354 participants with FM, 29.9% reported past use of a psychedelic, with lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin mushrooms being most commonly used. Perceptions of benefit from psychedelic use were generally neutral (59.4%) or positive (36.8%), with3% reporting negative impacts on overall health or pain symptoms. Among 12 participants who used psychedelics with intentions of treating chronic pain, 11 reported improved symptoms. Regardless of past use, the majority of participants believed that psychedelics have potential for chronic pain treatments and would be willing to participate in a psychedelic-based clinical trial for their pain. These findings support the need for additional studies to understand the potential and effectiveness of psychedelic substances in managing FM symptoms.

Understanding the anatomy, injury patterns, and surgical procedures is essential for image interpretation. While direct evaluation of the rotator cuff cannot be made, radiographs of the shoulder provide the initial evaluation of the osseous abnormalities associated with rotator cuff impingement. MR imaging is considered the study of choice for the evaluation of the shoulder because of the comprehensive assessment of both bone and soft-tissue abnormalities. MR can accurately evaluate the size and shape of tendon tears, tendon tear retraction, and tendon and muscle quality. Computed tomography is an excellent modality for the evaluation of osseous detail and detection of gas and calcium deposition; however, conventional CT is much less sensitive for bone marrow edema detection and soft tissue detail of the rotator cuff. Ultrasound can assess the rotator cuff with results similar to MRI, but cannot evaluate osseous structures.

Background Childhood trauma and adversity have been linked to chronic pain and pain sensitivity, particularly centralized pain. Yet, there remain numerous gaps in our understanding of this link. Purpose We explored the association between nonviolent and violent childhood trauma and a component of centralized pain (i.e., generalized sensory sensitivity) and pain sensitivity using self-report measures of centralized pain and quantitative sensory testing (QST). Methods Patients scheduled for a total knee arthroplasty (n = 129) completed questionnaires and QST prior to surgery. Results We found that self-report measures of centralized pain (i.e., widespread pain, somatic awareness, and sensory sensitivity) displayed a graded relationship across trauma groups, with patients with a history of violent trauma reporting the highest scores. Univariable multinomial logistic regression analyses showed that higher sensory sensitivity was associated with increased risk of being in the nonviolent trauma group compared to the no trauma group. Furthermore, higher widespread pain, higher somatic awareness, and higher sensory sensitivity distinguished the violent trauma group from the no trauma group. In multivariable analyses, sensory sensitivity is uniquely distinguished between the violent trauma group and the no trauma group. QST did not distinguish between groups. Conclusions The findings highlight the need for future research and interventions that reduce sensory sensitivity for chronic pain patients with a history of violent childhood trauma.

IntroductionScreening for depressive symptoms is often the first step to understanding risk for thoughts of harm among patients with pain. Pain characteristics and history of abuse are also associated with thoughts of harm; however, little is known about these associations after accounting for depressive symptoms. This study examined the association between pain characteristics and history of abuse with thoughts of harm among pain patients with moderate to severe and low to mild depressive symptoms.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of patients (n=7510) who presented to a tertiary-care, outpatient pain clinic.ResultsAbuse history was significantly associated with increased odds of reporting thoughts of harm for both patients with moderate to severe depressive symptoms as well as low to mild depressive symptoms. Abuse did not modify the association between any of the pain characteristics and thoughts of harm.DiscussionOur results highlight the importance of abuse history in assessing thoughts of harm. Although we are unable to infer causality due to the cross-sectional design, this study highlights the importance of screening for abuse history when assessing for suicidal and homicidal ideation.

Background: We sought to utilize a noninvasive technology to assess the effects of activity on Achilles tendon stiffness and define baseline Achilles tendon stiffness in female college athletes compared with nonathletes using tendon shear wave velocity as a marker for tendon stiffness. Hypothesis: Training status and exercise may affect Achilles tendon stiffness. Study Design: Level of Evidence: Level 4. Methods: A total of 32 college-age female athletes were prospectively enrolled (n = 17 varsity athletes and n = 15 nonathletes). Demographic characteristics, activity level, and previous injuries were recorded. Sonographic shear wave elastography (SWE) was used to assess Achilles tendon shear wave velocity bilaterally for all subjects, both at baseline and after 2 minutes of exercise. Student t tests were used to compare the mean elastography measurements between participants stratified by athlete status and pre/postexercise stimulus. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the mean proximal, middle, and distal Achilles tendon elastography measurements. Results: As seen by a greater mean shear wave velocity (8.60 ± 1.58 m/s vs 8.25 ± 1.89 m/s; P = 0.02), athletes had stiffer tendons than nonathletes. Exercise stimulus decreased average tendon shear wave velocity (8.57 ± 1.74 m/s vs 8.28 ± 1.72 m/s; P = 0.05). Tendon shear wave velocity was greatest proximally and least distally with significant differences between each region ( P < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant 2-way interaction between weekly training status and foot dominance ( P = 0.01). Post hoc analysis showed that this result was due to differences in tendon shear wave velocity between the dominant and nondominant lower extremity in nonathletes (7.73 ± 2.00 m/s vs 8.76 ± 1.62 m/s; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Female varsity collegiate athletes have higher baseline Achilles tendon stiffness as measured by SWE compared with nonathletes. Mean tendon stiffness varies based on Achilles measurement location. SWE is a quick, cost-effective, and noninvasive imaging modality that can be used to evaluate tendon stiffness and elasticity. Clinical Relevance: SWE is an efficient and noninvasive imaging modality that can evaluate dynamic tendon stiffness and elasticity. SWE may be helpful to assess injuries in female college athletes and may play a role in risk stratification or clinical follow-up. In theory, SWE could be used to identify athletes with increased elasticity as a marker for potential risk for rupture in this population.

Objective Most studies on preoperative opioid use only describe whether or not patients use opioids without characterizing reasons for use. Knowing why patients use opioids can help inform perioperative opioid management. The objective of this study was to explore pain specific reasons for preoperative opioid use prior to total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA and TKA) and their association with persistent use. Methods This is a prospective study of 197 patients undergoing THA (n = 99) or TKA (n = 98) enrolled in the Analgesic Outcomes Study between December 2015 and November 2018. All participants reported preoperative opioid use. Results Reasons for preoperative opioid use were categorized as surgical site pain only (81 [41.1%]); pain in other body areas only (22 [11.2%]); and combined pain (94 [47.7%]). Compared to patients taking opioids for surgical site pain, those with combined reasons for use had 1.24 (P = .40) and 2.28 (P = .16) greater odds of persistent use at 3 and 6 months postoperatively, adjusting for relevant covariates. Conclusions This study provides novel insights into the heterogeneity of reasons for presurgical opioid use in patients undergoing a THA or TKA. One key take away is that not all preoperative opioid use is the same and many patients are taking opioids preoperatively for more than just pain at the surgical site. Combined reasons for use was associated with long-term use, suggesting nonsurgical pain, in part, drives persistent opioid use after surgery. Future directions in perioperative care should focus on pain and non-pain reasons for presurgical opioid use to create tailored postoperative opioid weaning plans.

Background The Michigan Body Map (MBM) was developed to assess pain location in a reliable and valid manner; however, electronic formats have not been validated. This study had two aims: (1) initial validation of the electronic form of the MBM (eMBM) and (2) preliminary test of assessing pain severity within body zones. Methods For the first aim, 68 participants with chronic pain completed paper and electronic forms of the MBM, then underwent scripted interviews to assess preferences among body maps and verbal confirmation of pain locations. For the second aim, a subset of the participants (n=40) completed the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) pain severity subscale, as well as the eMBM again and endorsed pain severity using additional screens showing body zones that contained areas in which pain was endorsed. Results There were few discrepancies between MBM, eMBM and verbal report (1.9% and 1.6%, respectively), and no difference between forms in perceived ability to indicate areas of pain or ease of completion. Patients accurately indicated their bodily pain on both maps, with 84% and 87% reporting one or no errors on MBM and eMBM, respectively. Participants also reported no preference for which version best-depicted areas of pain or best distinguished left from right. Lastly, the most preferred measure was eMBM with pain severity zones, followed by eMBM without zones, followed by the BPI pain severity subscale. Conclusions These data support the validity of the eMBM for patients with chronic pain. Further, an expanded form of the eMBM that assesses pain severity was preferred by most participants.

We explored whether purpose in life and mastery predicted perceived physical health and problematic substance use among a sample of emerging adults who reported ever using alcohol or drugs. We examined perceived stress and coping as potential mediators of these associations and explored whether parental support moderated any of these associations. In a sample of emerging adults from across the United States (N = 2,564; M age = 20.87, standard deviation = 1.75; 49.6% male), purpose in life and mastery were associated with better-perceived health and fewer negative consequences of drug use via lower perceived stress and coping. In addition, parental support modified the relationship between purpose in life and stress and coping. The findings suggest potential health benefits associated with a greater purpose in life and mastery and indicate that parental support may enhance these associations.

With ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) being targeted for use as hot section components in gas turbine engines , it is important to understand the thermal-mechanical behavior of these materials within extreme application environments. This work focused on characterization of the in-situ response of a melt-infiltrated (MI) composite (i.e., a laminated Hi-Nicalon™, BN-interphase, melt-infiltrated (MI) SiC matrix composite) subjected to combined thermal-mechanical loads representative of intended operational environments. Laboratory scale test specimens were loaded in uniaxial tension at room temperature and at elevated temperature under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions . During laser heating experiments, a number of in-situ techniques enabled monitoring of damage formation, strain evolution, and temperature up to failure at 1150 °C. Results indicate that applying mechanical loads axially in the presence of thermal gradients may induce interply delamination cracks not observed after CMC test specimens are loaded axially under isothermal conditions .

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle tenotomy (USPNT) has been proposed as an alternative treatment to surgical intervention for lateral epicondylitis (LE). The Tenex system (Tenex Health Inc., Lake Forest, CA, USA) for USPNT is an ultrasonic device involving a needle which oscillates at high frequency to debride and aspirate diseased tendon under ultrasound image guidance. This investigation evaluates the efficacy of USPNT using the Tenex system for LE refractory to conservative management. We also seek to evaluate patient-specific factors which may correlate with treatment response.PRTEE (Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation) and DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) questionnaires were completed before performing the Tenex USPNT for all consecutive patients over a course of 38 months (Feb 2015-Mar 2018). Patients were contacted for follow-up evaluations. Paired t test was used to evaluate significant changes in treatment response (p 0.05). The univariate Tobit regression model was applied followed by multivariate Tobit model with forward selection algorithm. All models were adjusted by preoperative score and follow-up duration.A total of 37 patients (average age 51± 9 years, M/F:15/22) with refractory LE were included (mean follow-up, 531 days; range, 65-1148 days). Tenex USPNT significantly improved PRTEE and DASH scores (p 0.001). In some patients, this decrease persisted for up to 3 years after intervention. A significant association between treatment response and post-procedure physical therapy (PT) was present. Post-procedure PT contributes to 60, 68, 59, and 50% of reduction in PRTEE pain, function, total scores, and DASH score, respectively (p 0.001). No tendon ruptures, post-procedural infections, or other complications were noted.USPNT with Tenex significantly improves symptoms and function in individuals with LE even with long-term follow-up for 3 years. Post-procedure PT is associated with improved treatment response and should be considered after USPNT.

Due to the widespread application of glyphosate, a nonselective herbicide, to a variety of resistant food crops, the general population is exposed to glyphosate through dietary intake. Despite this, dietary exposures to glyphosate are considered low in comparison to application-related exposures. Although previous studies have evaluated exposure to horticultural and agricultural workers, to date only one study, which we recently conducted, has characterized exposure to glyphosate in consumers following heavy residential application of a glyphosate-containing herbicide in a residential yard and garden setting. In this previous study, we demonstrated that urinary glyphosate concentrations in these applicators were similar to or in some circumstances greater than those in occupational applicators, likely due to the nature of the simulation study, which ensured a heavy application protocol. However, it is unknown whether these urinary glyphosate concentrations in consumer applicators correspond to internal doses that may be of concern. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive risk assessment of glyphosate exposure in consumer applicators using a margin of safety approach. Category: Other; Ankle; Hindfoot; Midfoot/Forefoot; Sports Introduction/Purpose: Local ultrasound (US)-guided injections of anesthetics with corticosteroids are commonly performed for the conservative treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). This retrospective study aimed to investigate the course of TTS after US-guided injections. Methods: The study included patients who were diagnosed with TTS and received US-guided injections as their initial conservative treatment. The patients' pain levels were noted on a scale between zero and ten before and after each injection. The patients were divided into two groups: nonsurgical and surgical groups. The nonsurgical group included patients who had received US-guided injections and were not treated surgically, and the surgical group included those who received US-guided injections and ultimately underwent surgical tarsal tunnel release (TTR). The two groups were compared in terms of age, gender, post-injection follow-up time, and the amount of pain reduction immediately after injection (ΔPN). In the surgical group, the presence or absence of additional foot and ankle pathologies requiring operative treatment during TTR, and outcomes of surgical treatment were also assessed. Results: 218 patients were diagnosed with TTS and received US-guided injections as their initial treatment. After the injections, 169 patients (77.5%) required no TTR (nonsurgical group) and 49 patients (22.5%) underwent TTR (surgical group). The average ages for the nonsurgical and surgical groups were 53.8 and 48.9 years (P = 0.03). The average time between the injection and final follow-up for the nonsurgical group was 339 days. The average time between the injection and TTR for the surgical group was 145 days. There were no differences in pain relief after the injections between the nonsurgical and surgical groups (mean ΔPN: 3.6 and 3.8, respectively). In the surgical group, 16 patients (32%) presented with additional foot and ankle pathologies that were surgically treated during TTR. The average post-surgical follow up time was 117 days. At final follow up, 41 patients (84%) in the surgical group had no pain or functional impairment. Conclusion: US-guided injection can be an effective conservative treatment option for patients with TTS. Surgical release of tarsal tunnel may improve and resolve the overall symtoms of TTS in majority of the patients who do not respond to nonsurgical treatment. Younger age and additional foot and ankle pathologies appear to be associated with greater likelihood of undergoing TTR.

This experiment demonstrates that chromosomal telomere length (TL) moderates response to injustice among African Americans. Based on worldview verification theory - an emerging psychosocial framework for understanding stress - we predicted that acute stress responses would be most pronounced when individual-level expectancies for justice were discordant with justice experiences. Healthy African Americans (N=118; 30% male; M age=31.63years) provided dried blood spot samples that were assayed for TL, and completed a social-evaluative stressor task during which high versus low levels of distributive (outcome) and procedural (decision process) justice were simultaneously manipulated. African Americans with longer telomeres appeared more resilient (in emotional and neuroendocrine response-higher DHEAs:cortisol) to receiving an unfair outcome when a fair decision process was used, whereas African Americans with shorter telomeres appeared more resilient when an unfair decision process was used. TL may indicate personal histories of adversity and associated stress-related expectancies that influence responses to injustice.

The extent to which positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect conjointly impact well-being is not yet well understood. Additionally, research investigating the role of affectivity in maintaining well-being among ethnic and racial minorities is scant. The current research demonstrates how polynomial regression and response surface methodology (PR and RSM) may be used to better understand how PA and NA jointly influence stress and well-being.In Study 1, 291 African-American undergraduates (MStudy 1 included life satisfaction, perceived stress and self-reported depressive symptoms. Study 2 included salivary cortisol reactivity.Across both studies, PA ascendency (i.e. high PA combined with low NA) was associated with better well-being, while NA ascendancy (i.e. high NA combined with low PA) was associated with poorer outcomes.PR and RSM may provide new insight into the conjoint influence of PA and NA on health and well-being. We discuss potential implications for affectivity research, including race-related explorations.

Introduction How adolescents think about their future (i.e., future orientation) impacts their risk-taking behavior. The purpose of the present analysis was to explore whether future orientation (future planning, perceived risk to future goals, and positive future expectations) was associated with nonmedical use of stimulants and analgesics in a sample of high school students. Methods Information on future orientation and nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) were collected using a paper-and-pencil survey from a sample of 9th–12th grade students in a Midwestern school. Results Higher perceived risk to future goals and positive future expectations were associated with a lower likelihood of self-reported nonmedical use of stimulants (n = 250; OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.83; OR = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.05, 0.47, respectively). Only higher perceived risk to future goals was associated with a lower likelihood of self-reported nonmedical use of analgesics (n = 250; OR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.68). In a follow-up analysis limited to students who endorsed alcohol or marijuana use, perceived risk to future goals remained associated with a lower likelihood of nonmedical use of stimulants and analgesics. Conclusions Results suggest that risk perception might be a salient protective factor against both nonmedical use of stimulants and analgesics. Overall, the differential impact of conceptualizations of future orientation might depend on the class of prescription drug used, demonstrating a need to consider prescription drugs individually in the development of future studies and interventions.

BackgroundSelf-reported side effects of pain medication are important determinants of treatment course that can affect patient adherence, medication discontinuation and physician decisions. Yet, few studies have investigated patient-level predictors of self-reported pain medication side effects. The present study sought to fill this gap by exploring the impact of physical or sexual abuse history on self-reported pain medication side effects and considered a mediation model in which those effects are transmitted through a centralized pain phenotype and pain catastrophizing.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 3118 patients presenting to a tertiary-care, outpatient pain clinic.ResultsApproximately 15% of the sample (n=479) reported a lifetime history of abuse. Patients with a lifetime history of abuse, particularly abuse that occurred in both childhood and adulthood, reported more pain medication side effects compared with patients reporting no abuse history. Furthermore, path analysis showed that a centralized pain phenotype and pain catastrophizing mediated the association between lifetime abuse history and the sum of pain medication side effects.ConclusionsThis suggests that individuals who experience abuse may develop a heightened physiological sensitivity to stimuli, as well as a tendency to interpret stimuli negatively, exaggerate the impact of aversive stimuli and undermine their ability to cope with the stressor. This study highlights the need for physicians to understand patient-level predictors of medication tolerance and to consider a history of abuse and trauma in decisions regarding treatment and medication management.

The International Association of Forensic Nurses has developed a Position Statement regarding child maltreatment. The Position Statement identifies the problem statement, association position, and rationale for interventions.

A novel methodology is introduced for quantifying the severity of damage created during testing in composite components. The method uses digital image correlation combined with image processing techniques to monitor the rate at which the strain field changes during mechanical tests. The methodology is demonstrated using two distinct experimental datasets, a ceramic matrix composite specimen loaded in tension at high temperature and nine polymer matrix composite specimens containing fibre-waviness defects loaded in bending. The changes in the strain field owing to damage creation are shown to be a more effective indicator that the specimen has reached its proportional limit than using load-extension diagrams. The technique also introduces a new approach to using experimental data for creating maps indicating the spatio-temporal distribution of damage in a component. These maps indicate where damage occurs in a component, and provide information about its morphology and its time of occurrence. This presentation format is both easier and faster to interpret than the raw data which, for some tests, can consist of tens of thousands of images. This methodology has the potential to reduce the time taken to interpret large material test datasets while increasing the amount of knowledge that can be extracted from each test.

Current guidelines for addressing opioid cessation in the context of chronic pain management recommend that opioids be discontinued if the risks outweigh the benefits. However, few studies have focused on understanding opioid cessation from the perspective of individuals with chronic pain. This mixed methods study included 49 former opioid users with chronic pain and used quantitative survey data and qualitative focus group data to identify themes pertaining to former opioid user’s experience before, during and after opioid cessation. Participants described several reasons for wanting to stop opioids including lack of efficacy, impact on quality of life, and concerns about addiction. Barriers to cessation included concerns about inadequate pain management, and concerns about the impact of stopping opioids on mood. Following opioid cessation, the sample was mixed regarding the benefit of cessation. Half of the former opioid users reported their pain to be better or the same after stopping opioids; however, 47% of the sample reported feeling worse pain since stopping their opioids. As the pendulum swings from pain control to drug control, we must ensure that the response to the opioid epidemic does not cause harm to individuals with chronic pain. Novel opioid cessation interventions are needed in combination with methods of addressing individual challenges and barriers to adequate pain relief including access to and provision of non-opioid alternatives for pain management.

IntroductionWe hypothesized that patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) would describe a more negative pain phenotype including higher pain severity, more neuropathic pain descriptors, more centralized pain symptoms, poorer physical function, and more affective distress when compared with patients with neuropathic pain of the extremities not meeting CRPS criteria.Materials and methodsThis was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary pain center. The sample included 212 patients who met Budapest Criteria for CRPS and 175 patients with neuropathic pain of the extremities who did not meet criteria. All patients completed a packet of questionnaires before their initial visit containing validated outcome measures assessing pain severity, pain interference, physical functioning, depression, anxiety, and catastrophizing.ResultsPatients with CRPS reported higher physical disability (p=0.022) and more neuropathic pain symptoms (p=0.002) than patients not meeting CRPS criteria, but the groups did not otherwise differ significantly. There were no significant differences in pain severity or affective distress, despite power analyses suggesting the ability to detect small to medium effect sizes (d=0.29; w=0.14). Subanalyses of differences in neuropathic pain symptoms revealed that patients with CRPS, compared with patients not meeting CRPS criteria, were more likely to report pain with light touch (p=0.003), sudden pain attacks (p=0.003), pain with cold or heat (p=0.002), sensation of numbness (p=0.042), and pain with slight pressure (p=0.018).DiscussionCounter to our hypothesis, the present study suggests that patients with CRPS do not have a worse clinical phenotype compared with patients not meeting CRPS criteria, with the exception of higher physical disability and more neuropathic pain symptoms. This corresponds to recent evidence that patients with CRPS are similar to other patient populations with chronic pain.
